Granite Restoration from N-Hance Wood Renewal: The Ideal Way to Care for Your Granite Countertops By Karen Carter
A
ndy Rozo, owner of N-Hance Wood Renewal in Denver, not only offers services to keep your wooden cabinets and hardwood floors in tip-top shape. His team can also thoroughly clean and restore your granite countertops to their original luster and shine. According to Rozo, many homeowners with granite countertops understand their granite might need some special care, but fail to realize how often such countertops should be treated. “Most people don’t know the industry standard is that granite should be cleaned, polished, and sealed every one to three years,” Rozo said. Since granite is a natural product and has pores, he explained, those pores can fill with bacteria. For this reason, it’s important not just to seal and polish granite, but to make sure it’s thoroughly disinfected and cleaned first. “We accomplish this by first cleaning thoroughly then applying a disinfectant before sealing and polishing,” he said. “All of our products are green and fully compatible, and we don’t create any dust because there’s no grinding.” He also said his team uses a
hand polisher to give countertops the sheen that everyone wants their granite to maintain. Rozo added that removing the bacteria in granite countertops rather than trapping it contributes to a healthier home, and that simply sealing granite with a store-bought product is not a very effective approach. “Our process helps ensure that your granite will not only be completely clear of bacteria, but will also be stronger and a lot more durable.” A granite countertop that has not been properly cared for, he added, can get stained when beverages like wine, coffee, soda, or juice are spilled on it because it is so porous. “When you’ve spent thousands of dollars adding granite countertops to your home,” he said, “it makes sense to take care of them by having your granite cleaned, sealed, and polished on a regular basis.”

The Bee Family Centennial Farm Museum in Fort Collins offers a glimpse into the history of the Northern Colorado prairies and the challenges settlers faced in their attempts to cultivate the arid land. The property has been maintained as an active farm since 1894. Now a designated national historic place, the museum offers tours of the original homestead and the surrounding buildings, including a chicken house, cow shed, and wood and metal granaries, as well as historical farming equipment, cars and wagons. The mission of the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg is to rescue and provide a home for large exotic and endangered captive animals that have been abused or illegally kept. The facility is located on 720 acres of rural, rolling grasslands 30 miles northeast of Denver and is home to more than 400 animals, including tigers, African lions, bears, mountain lions, leopards, wolves, ostriches, emus, camel and other species. As part of its education mission, the sanctuary invites the public to visit. Entrance fees are based on annual or one-time donations that help pay for the care of the animals. Head a few miles east to find out what’s up at the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum. This historic hangar on the former Lowry Air Force Base aims to educate and inspire people of all ages about aviation and space endeavors. Special events include a Star Wars celebration, an annual aeromodelling expo and flight educational programs for children. The museum is open year round except for certain holidays and private events. Described as one of the most colorful natural wonders of the world, Paint Mines Interpretive Park near Calhan, about 85 miles southeast of Denver, provides opportunities for hiking and exploring among vibrant clay formations. The spires and hoodoos formed as the result of centuries of erosion and the surrounding area are home to wildlife, birds, rocks and flowers, as well as evidence of prehistoric human inhabitants. No exploration of Colorado would be complete without a visit to a leftover relic from the booming mining era – a ghost town. Local residents are treated to beautiful mountain scenery from their city and suburban backyards, but to get an upclose taste of Rocky Mountain ecosystems, take a drive over Guanella Pass along Mount Bierstadt and Mount Evans. The road spans the divide between the South Platte and Clear Creek watersheds and passes through forests of spruce, fir, aspen and pine trees at lower elevations, meadows at higher elevations, and rocky spans dotted with hardy grasses and flowers above the timberline. The pass is 22 miles long and takes about an hour to drive. Boulder’s iconic flatirons are a series of five sandstone formations on Green Mountain within the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks system. 1. For the BBQ Mayonnaise, mix mayonnaise and Bar-B-Q Sauce in small bowl until well blended. Cover. Refrigerate until ready to serve. 2. For the Onions, mix flour, salt and pepper in large resealable plastic bag. Add onion; toss to coat well. Pour oil into deep fryer, large heavy skillet or saucepan, filling no more than 1/3 full. Heat oil on medium-high heat. Carefully add onion rings to hot oil. Fry 4 to 5 minutes, turning once to brown evenly, until onions rings are golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Set aside. 3. For the Burgers, mix Seasoning, chili powder and brown sugar in small bowl. Shape ground beef into 4 patties. Coat surface of each patty evenly with the rub mixture. Grill over medium heat 4 to 6 minutes per side or until burgers are cooked through (internal temperature of 160ºF). Add cheese slices to burgers 1 minute before cooking is completed. Grill pickle slices 2 to 3 minutes per side or until grill marks appear. Toast rolls on the grill, open-side down, about 30 seconds, if desired. 4. Serve burgers on rolls topped with grilled pickles, Crispy Onion Straws and lettuce. Serve with BBQ Mayonnaise.

Cyclists of all abilities will take to the hills Sunday, August 28, for an event benefiting the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette.
T
his year marks the 10th anniversary of the Good Sam Bike Jam. The theme for this year’s race is “Love. Sweat. Gears. Use your pedal power to change someone’s life.” The event is organized by the Good Samaritan Medical Center Foundation and is one of its largest fundraisers to support Good Samaritan Medical Center (GSMC), which provides a range of services including trauma care, oncology, maternity and orthopedics, as well as cardiac and stroke programs. Each year, proceeds of the event are earmarked for specific programs. This year, funds will support the emergency services and trauma programs, said Tiffany Anderson, marketing manager at Good Samaritan Medical Center. Specifically, the funds will provide scholarships for three EMTs to attend the Rocky Mountain Trauma conference to support their professional development; contribute to sponsoring both a camp for stroke survivors and their caregivers and a camp for those who have had brain injuries; and allow the medical center to purchase new wheelchairs. The ride incorporates six categories to accommodate all levels of cyclists. All races start and finish in Lafayette at Good Samaritan Medical Center, 200 Exempla Circle. The starting times will be staggered.

The Century Course is a challenging 100-mile route to Allenspark and back and is designed for expert riders. The course includes 8,300 feet of climbing and a timed King & Queen of the Mountain competition.

Advanced riders can choose the 62-mile metric-century tour of Boulder County’s most scenic mountain and prairie roads. The King & Queen of the Mountain competition is also included in this ride.

Intermediate cyclists can take on a 45-mile ride on a gently rolling course in Boulder County, with views of Longs Peak and the Rocky Mountains.

Beginners have two choices. A 32-mile course takes cyclists on an easy-tonavigate route with mountain views, and a 16-mile course provides a short, flat ride perfect for first-timers.

Other Beginners and Families can choose to participate in the family ride. This is a 3-mile flat route that the entire family can enjoy. The ride is organized in partnership with the Butterfly Pavilion to support the Wings of Wellness community initiative.
All riders are invited to join their fellow cyclists for festivities following the rides at Good Samaritan Medical Center. Bands, including Runaway Train and Face, will play between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., said Anderson. The festivities will include food, adult and other beverages, and sponsor booths. Vendors will hand out healthy snacks and drinks at the finish line. Riders can form teams of 10 or more to receive discounted registration. Each rider will receive a t-shirt for participating, said Anderson. Organizers hope 1,000 riders will sign up for the ride’s 10th anniversary. More than 800 riders participated last year. “This event is important because it supports the programs and services of the medical center and aligns with our priorities of promoting a healthy lifestyle while being an active member of the community,” said Anderson.
