FROM THE
Stop and Smell the Roses In the life of a community there is a lot of focus on planning. Where are we headed? What is needed to support future needs? How will we protect the environment? Broomfield has an entire Planning Department dedicated to these questions and more – but we will cover that next month!
In
this issue we present some of the things that are happening right now in Broomfield that make this City a great place to live. Mayor Randy Ahrens shares his State of the City update and Chamber President Jennifer Kerr previews the upcoming Business Summit. Don’t miss updates on two of the major current projects in town – the Lowell Blvd. project and the Broomfield County Commons field expansion. We are also pleased to share in the excitement of one of our community’s historic treasures receiving a special designation. See page 21 and learn how the Broomfield Depot Museum has been added to the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties. Also learn how the City of Broomfield is working to support community creativity and health through the Creative Broomfield (page 24) and B Healthy Broomfield (page 28) programs. All of these programs speak to the vibrancy of our community today! So embrace, explore, and stop and smell Broomfield’s roses.

Proactive Steps Can Ease the
By Sara Farris
“PAIN” OF ACCIDENTS AND EMERGENCIES The light turns green and you proceed into the intersection when – CRASH. A distracted driver fails to stop at the red light and plows into you. Before you know it, you’re being loaded into an ambulance and transported to the hospital. Even when you are doing everything right, you can’t always avoid accidents and emergencies, however, you can help plan for them with help from North Metro Fire Rescue District.
Save Money on Your Ambulance Ride Any emergency where you end up at the hospital can be a costly one. Medical calls account for more than 70 percent of North Metro Fire’s calls annually, and the majority of those medical calls require ambulance transport. North Metro Fire helps lower the financial burden for residents through its Ambulance Membership Program. Ambulance memberships cost $25 to $35 per year, depending on the type of membership, and cover a member’s insurance deductible or co-pay related to ambulance transport up to $1,500 annually. The membership is not intended to be a substitute for insurance and is only available to residents within the fire district who already have medical coverage. New this year, current members can renew and pay for their ambulance membership online. Learn more about enrolling for a membership and its benefits through the District’s website: www.northmetrofire.org/ambulance-memberships/.
Help Emergency Providers Quickly Access Medical Details North Metro Fire’s File of Life Program encourages citizens to post vital medical information in a location that first responders can easily access during an emergency. The File of Life itself is a red plastic magnetic file with an insert inside for people to record their medical and contact information and post the file in a visible place, such as on the outside of their refrigerator. There are also File of Life holders that are pocket-sized to go in your wallet. North Metro Fire recommends that people use a pencil when recording their information so that updates can be made over time. Keeping the information updated is very important to be of help to emergency service providers. To request a File of Life or get more information on the program, contact North Metro Fire at 303-452-9910.
at the fire station. Appointments are free to all North Metro Fire residents and are available on the first and third Saturdays of every month from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Residents can schedule their car seat inspection by calling North Metro Fire at 303-452-9910. Another way to protect your loved ones is by learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Throughout the year, North Metro Fire offers CPR certification courses for community members and healthcare providers. Additionally, the District offers a Family and Friends® CPR course twice a year that is free to residents who want to learn CPR but who don’t need a certification card. To find out more about upcoming CPR classes, visit the District’s website at www. northmetrofire.org/cprclasses.
NORTH METRO FIRE RESCUE DISTRICT A responsive, all-hazard organization that works to provide a caring, high-quality, professional delivery of service.
Protect Your Loved Ones and be Ready to Respond North Metro Fire wants to help keep little ones safe through its Car Seat Safety Program. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers can make an appointment to ensure their car seat is properly installed and fitted to the child by a certified child passenger safety technician

How to Reduce
Winter Sports Injuries By Dr. Mark Wisthoff
C
olorado is one of the most active and fit states due to the great weather and amazing outdoor activities. As the powder accumulates, many of us head to the mountains to enjoy our favorite winter activities. Unfortunately, at times this leads to accidents and injuries. According to research done by the US Consumer Reports Product Safety Commission, more than 290,000 people were treated at hospitals, doctor’s offices, and emergency rooms for winter sports related injuries in 2014. Snow skiing has the highest reported injury rates followed by snowboarding, ice skating, sledding, tobogganing, and snow tubing. Injuries include minor sprains and strains that require only a short time period to heal, to more serious injuries including dislocations, ligament tears, and fractures, which may keep you out for the rest of the season. Here are some helpful tips to minimize your risk of injury while enjoying the outdoors in the winter. Many injuries occur later in the day when muscles are fatigued and you overexert while having poor form or posture. Prevent injuries like these by keeping in good physical condition year round. A proper warm up is also a very important injury prevention tool that is often neglected before getting on the chair lift. Muscles, ligaments, and tendons are the body parts most vulnerable to injury prior to warming up. Do a few easy runs to start out with or perform some dynamic stretches before starting your day on the slopes. Improper technique can also predispose to injury. Especially in sports like skiing and snowboarding, taking a lesson from a qualified instructor can be beneficial to injury prevention. Learning how to fall correctly and safely can also reduce the risk of injury. If you do get injured, do not try to push through the pain. Rest, ice, and elevate the affected area. If pain is not responding to conservative treatment you should see your provider to rule out a serious injury.

WHERE WE ARE NOW:
State City OF THE By Broomfield Mayor, Randy Ahrens
T
wo years ago I initiated the inaugural “State of the City” address in conjunction with the Broomfield Chamber to inform Chamber members of what is new in Broomfield. This was extremely well received and I was asked to share it with multiple organizations throughout the city. Our third “State of the City” is coming up in March. In this article I will give you a little preview incorporating what myself and your City Council deemed as priorities for the upcoming year. Percolating to top of the list was water and debt. These two critical items go hand in hand as we ensure our future water supply and the financial sustainability of our growing community. At planned build-out we will be one of the 500 largest cities in the nation, with an estimated 125,000 residents. The major component of our water supply will be the construction of the Chimney Hollow Reservoir for long-term water storage and the Broomfield Reservoir for near-term storage and new potential recreation possibilities. As a new county back in the early 2000s, we accumulated debt to construct a detention center, courts, and other needed facilities. Council will embark on studying methods in which we could possibly reduce debt and lower property taxes. Another grouping of our overall eight identified priorities is transportation and pedestrian improvements. This year we will work to improve Dillon Road (also known as 144th Ave.) and will look at adding bike paths and improving crossings for safety issues and roadway projects. Open space is another essential priority. Council will focus on how to finalize a 40% open land goal from previous Master Plan commitments, possibly developing a financing plan to acquire open space before costs increase. Trail naming may be addressed. The Civic Center development is closer to being realized after Council purchased the old Safeway building on 120th Ave. We have multiple groups proposing exciting plans to bring in unique retail and specialty shops. The goal is to breathe life into that area and make this a community gathering place for all to enjoy. I would personally like to bring the old “Heart of Broomfield” sign back and incorporate it into the design. Economic Development is always on the priority list and we constantly strive to add to our corporate mix and retail diversity. JAX Mercantile will open in the

spring in the previous K-Mart location. Another retailer is also coming to bring a new vibrancy to the Sheridan Corner retail area. Lastly, a new item was considered this year which was named “Current Issues” and qualified as a priority. Council understands and is allowing for new issues to be studied when appropriate although they were not necessarily a top eight priority during our yearly focus session. Affordable housing and citywide cell tower plans are examples of topics that might be judged as needing further study under the “Current Issues” label.
This is just a quick snapshot, but I think it provides valuable insight into City Council’s priorities for this year.
Broomfield Depot Receives
State Historical Designation By Kristen Beckman
The Broomfield Depot, which houses the Broomfield Depot Museum, was listed in the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties in January.
T
he register lists cultural resources in Colorado that are considered worthy of preservation and is administered by the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation at History Colorado. Historically and architecturally significant buildings, structures, sites, and districts are eligible to be listed. The register currently includes more than 1,800 properties. The Broomfield Depot is one of two Broomfield properties in the registry along with Westlake School. Inclusion in the register allows the Broomfield Depot to receive tax credits and apply for grants from the State Historical Fund (SHF) for renovations. A listing also formally recognizes a property’s importance to the history of the state and serves as a source of local pride and sense of community. The Broomfield Depot was constructed in 1909 by the Colorado & Southern Railway to serve its railroad operations as well as those of the Denver & Interurban Railroad, which was an electric commuter line between Denver and Boulder. In addition to supporting the railroad operations, the depot building served as the living quarters for station agents and their families for decades. Operations at the Broomfield Depot ceased in 1968, although the building itself was staffed through 1976. During much of that time, the railroad leased space in the building to the Broomfield Jaycees, which ultimately acquired the building and participated in moving it to a temporary location in Zang’s Spur Park. The building received a new concrete foundation and a permanent walk-out basement facilitated by its orientation in a slope. At the time of the move, the city of Broomfield became a joint owner of the building, and the

Broomfield Historical Society began collecting artifacts that would later become the Broomfield Depot Museum collection. The Broomfield Depot was already a local historic property as designated by Broomfield’s Historic Landmark Board, which allowed it to receive a grant for an exterior restoration. In April 2015, Jacqui Ainlay-Conley, the museum’s administrator, began pursuing the state designation by filing preliminary forms with History Colorado. After receiving positive feedback, Ainlay-Conley presented the idea to the Broomfield Depot Museum Friends, which provided funds to hire Front Range Research Associates to prepare the application. The research team spent several weeks gathering information and interviewing experts to create a 32-page document that includes vivid descriptions of the structure and its uses, the railroad operations and the station attendants who lived in the building, along with historical photos. “It provided a lot of history that we can use in the museum,” said Ainlay-Conley. “We knew a lot in bits and pieces from primary documents and interpretive writing, but the nomination pulled it all together in one document. The information it provides is priceless.” The nomination was submitted in October and considered by the state review board in January. Shortly after that, the History Colorado board affirmed the designation. The Broomfield Depot Museum Friends commemorated the designation by presenting the official listing certificate to the City and County of Broomfield in February. “It puts the building in the context of local, state, and national history,” said Ainlay-Conley. BROOMFIELD
Website Aims to Increase Awareness of Cultural Programs By Kristen Beckman
The City and County of Broomfield launched the Creative Broomfield website in January with a goal of expanding the reach of its cultural and arts programming to as many citizens as possible. 24

“The website is something the city and county is doing to increase awareness and let people know things they can do in Broomfield,” said Karen Gerrity, cultural affairs manager for the City and County of Broomfield. “Citizens can go to one place and see all the ways there are in Broomfield to be creative.” Broomfield created the original Creative Broomfield master plan in 2001 when it was incorporated as a county. After 15 years, the city and its population have changed, as have the character and scale of its cultural offerings. In addition, new programs have developed that were not included in the original Creative Broomfield master plan. In 2014, the city decided to undertake an evaluation of the plan and update its mission to include contemporary approaches to achieving its goals. The initiative included input from about 1,000 citizens and stakeholders, said Gerrity. The new master plan outlines a four-part marketing strategy with goals including to develop a one-stop-shop experience for citizens to find information about creative programming within the city; create a marketing program around the Creative Broomfield theme to boost engagement across departments; cooperate among departments and stakeholders to promote culture, arts, and creativity in Broomfield; and build the presence of the Creative Broomfield brand within the community. A key outcome of the marketing strategy was to create a new website that would incorporate all four of the goals outlined in the master plan. The site includes programming from all city departments and stakeholders, including classes that may be held by the recreation department or library, presentations offered by the Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum, and programming offered by other city departments. The website was a joint effort of the city’s Cultural Affairs department and the media-communications team.

In addition to reaching as many citizens as possible, the website’s goal also is to increase participation in city and county cultural events. Because the site is still so new, it is difficult to determine if it has impacted participation at events. However, Gerrity said attendance at a piano concert and a benefit concert to support FISH in late January had good attendance with 150 people at each event. An accordion concert in early February drew 100 attendees despite a snowstorm, and a Japanese language class highlighted on the site completely filled up, prompting the creation of a second class due to demand. At the same time the Web portal was launched, the city also launched a Creative Broomfield Facebook page that provides up-to-date information about cultural events and programs and allows third parties to post events about non-city sponsored cultural programs. Gerrity said the Facebook page has received more than 400 likes in its first month. Creative Broomfield is integrating a healthy focus into its forthcoming cultural and arts messaging, dovetailing with the city’s B Healthy program by advancing the idea of increasing quality of life via cultural and arts programs. Gerrity said the initiative will emphasize how arts and cultural activities can lead to better health. For example, dance classes can improve cardiovascular health, while art classes may help develop fine motor skills and music classes and programs can stimulate the brain, she said. “Broomfield has understood from the very beginning how important a rich cultural landscape is to the community,” said Gerrity. “This is just another way of making sure we reach everyone and let them know there are all kinds of great ways to be creative in Broomfield.”
The Creative Broomfield website can be found at www.creativebroomfield.com or through the city’s web page at www.broomfield.org.

B Healthy Broomfield Initiative
Provides Programs and Resources to Improve the Health of Residents By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
We are fortunate to live in one of the healthiest states in the country and the City of Broomfield is very committed to the health of its residents. The Broomfield Public Health Improvement Plan is focused on obesity prevention by promoting healthy eating and active living for everyone in Broomfield. To support this plan, the B Healthy Broomfield initiative was created.
T
his initiative includes the B Healthy: One Small Change Campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to encourage those who work, live and/or play in Broomfield to focus on making one small change each day. The change could include choosing water over soda or going for a walk after a meal. These small changes add up and can really make a difference in a person’s health. More ideas for small changes can be found at www.broomfield.org/onesmallchange. The initiative also promotes a variety of events and programs that are being offered now through spring. These events and programs focus on fitness, healthy eating, and healthy aging. Fitness focused events include current classes such as Barre Burn, a strength, flexibility, and endurance class, as well as Pilates held at the Paul Derda Recreation Center. Recreation leagues such as men’s basketball and softball, and youth lacrosse and volleyball will be offered in March. Programs promoting healthy eating include a program called Sneaky Exercise on March 10 and Cracking the Vitality Code: 5 Keys to Feel Fully Energized and Totally Alive on April 14.

Healthy aging events include blood pressure checks on the first Wednesday of every month as well as options to make appointments with a registered nurse or with a podiatrist for overall foot care. On March 14 an Active Adult Yoga Workshop will be held at the Broomfield Community Center. The B Healthy website, www.broomfield.org/bhealthy, provides specific dates and information on these events and more. The B Healthy Workplace Wellness is a program that the City and County of Broomfield has implemented internally through the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center’s State of Slim program. The City of Broomfield website states that “Forty Broomfield employees are learning how to lose weight and maintain weight loss by following a 16-week course known for instilling a positive mindset, good eating habits, and exercise routines.” If you would like to get involved, the B Healthy Broomfield Coalition, made up of residents and community partners, supports the Public Health Improvement Plan and B Healthy activities by advising on healthy eating and active living interventions. To join the community effort, email Public Health and Environment at publichealth@broomfield.org. Jason Vahling, Broomfield’s Public Health and Environment Director said, “Through the work of the B Healthy Broomfield Coalition, we are striving to make Broomfield the healthiest county in Colorado. We are continuously working with new partners who are interested in improving health in Broomfield at the community level.” Vahling added, “Reducing obesity and improving the health of Broomfield residents is a good public investment because it strengthens our economy and promotes student achievement. We look forward to working with our partners and community members to meet this goal.”
So get out there Broomfield and B Healthy!
Plans to Improve and Expand
County Commons Park By Anne Rhoades
There is new activity at the Broomfield County Commons’ athletic fields and improvements and expansions are on the way. Creation of the 80-acre park first began in 2002. With funds available at that time, several playing fields (referred to as pods) were completed, along with landscaping, irrigation, support buildings, and parking lots. Since the establishment of the Commons, the Red Pod, Blue Pod, and Championship Field have hosted a variety of community events including soccer, football, lacrosse, rugby, and ultimate Frisbee programs.
I
n the decade and a half since the original fields were built, the total number of Broomfield residents has increased considerably, and so has the demand for additional field space and crucial repairs for the aging ones. Fortunately, in September, Broomfield’s City Council met to approve the necessary work. According to Director of Recreation Services Nancy Harrold, “The synthetic turf on the Championship Field will be replaced and drainage and subgrade issues will be corrected.” The repairs are overdue, as the synthetic turf on the Championship Field, which was installed in 2003, was expected to only last ten years. Now with better technology, the new turf is engineered to last up to 15 years. Construction of the Yellow Pod (the field located directly north of Broomfield County Commons Drive and east of Sheridan Blvd) is underway. The completed field will add approximately 12.7 acres of new usable space. “The new field will be created with synthetic turf, as well, and will be used primarily as practice fields,” said Harrold. In the past, sod turfs had to be given rest time during the year to rejuvenate. Synthetic turf allows for year round use and saves on maintenance and water consumption. Ronda Jo Ackerman Alford, CIP Project Manager for the City and County of Broomfield, added, “Additional modifications to the Blue Pod (east of Sheridan and South of Broomfield County Commons Drive) include adding a new sidewalk from the east end of the parking lot which connects to the (existing) sidewalk near the restroom/ concessions/shelter building.” And while the current sidewalk’s slope is challenging for strollers and wheelchairs, Alford reports that the new sidewalk will have a gentler slope which “will make access more manageable.”
A projected 300 car parking lot which utilizes space in the green pod may be in the future as well, but that project has not received official approval yet and will be addressed in 2016. Dog lovers will be happy to know that the dog park (currently located on the future Green Pod) will remain open during construction of the Yellow Pod. In the future, some reconfiguration of the dog park will be made to accommodate the new parking lot, but Harrold believes some form of the dog park will remain in County Commons Park. How is Broomfield paying for the improvements and development of the additional space? According to Alford, “The source of the funds is from the dedicated allocation of city sales tax to the Capital Improvement Fund.”

Lowell Boulevard Project
Moves Toward Summer Completion By Elizabeth Buckingham
According to the City of Broomfield, the second phase of the Lowell Boulevard Project is more than 70% complete. The city, along with contractor Hamilton Construction, is currently working on a major road project on Lowell Boulevard which will complete a four-lane arterial from the recently completed 120th Avenue intersection to East Midway Boulevard; turn lanes and landscaping on Lowell Boulevard from West 120th Avenue to East Midway will also be included. The project will complete several other important improvements consistent with Broomfield’s Transportation Drainage and Trails Master Plan. In addition to expanding Lowell Boulevard, the project includes constructing a dedicated right turn at East Midway, completing curb sidewalks and landscaping along the Metzger Farm Open Space, providing a trail underpass to the Metzger Farm Open Space, and upgrading water and storm sewer facilities on Lowell Boulevard. The project emphasizes restoring native plants and landscaping in the area. Now that the major portion of the project, the bridge over the frequently flooded Nissen Channel near 120th Avenue, is structurally complete, crews are focused on aesthetic details such as rebuilding trails. While current construction activity, led by capital improvement project manager Dan Feller, “might seem dormant,” in fact “there is always work being done.” When the weather warms at the end of March, “crews will start up again and focus immediately on widening as well as mill and overlay work.” Major road work will start again toward the end of March, with paving and irrigation to be completed in April and May. The original project deadline was May 2016, but weather- and personnel-related delays will extend that to June 30. Feller said these delays will not cost the city extra money; the city smartly had the project bid at a fixed rate and residents will not incur additional costs due to unforeseen circumstances. A second construction project along Lowell will start later in 2016; a public open house regarding this project will be held in the next few months. Feller stated that this second project is completely separate from the first and not a project extension. Remaining work on the current project includes building retaining walls and supplying fill dirt to support the new road grade on the west side of Lowell between 120th and 121st. Curbs, sidewalks, intersection ramps, driveways, and pavements from 124th to East Midway will also be repaired or replaced. Feller said Broomfield residents should check the city’s website, www.broomfield.org/lowell, frequently to stay up-to-date on construction progress. If you commute through the work area, consider signing up for regular updates via email or Twitter so you can make route adjustments as needed. Please drive with caution and adhere to posted speed limits. More information about city projects can be found at www.broomfield.org.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MARCH 2016
I have recently been a patient at Cancer Centers of Colorado - Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette. I cannot express enough how grateful I am to have been cared for by the staff at Good Samaritan and been the recipient of financial assistance through the Good Samaritan Medical Center Foundation. Upon getting the diagnosis of breast cancer, events in my life went from bad to worse and had a devastating effect on my ability to meet my basic life needs. The staff cared enough to assess my financial situation which was not very good and a considerable source of stress, and the Foundation stepped in to help. I cannot begin to express the gratitude I feel for the financial support of Good Samaritan Medical Center Foundation. I had no idea where the money would come from to get through this, and I never imagined the generosity I would experience and the peace of mind I would have as a result. ‘Thank you’ does not scratch the surface of what I feel in my heart.” ~ Kathy W., Patient

Homey Heritage There’s nothing like a little history to make you feel nostalgic when you’re far from home. In Carbondale, Avalanche Ranch offers charming covered wagons – the “gypsy” or “shepherd”— and cabins alongside a hot spring for a quintessentially Colorado place to lay your head. For a truly Western classic, stay in a train caboose at Strawberry Hot Springs, or one at the Wyman Hotel and Inn. At the Canyon of the Ancients in Cortez, bed down at the Mokee House – a Pueblo-style structure complete with a keyhole door and an outdoor oven just a few miles from the incredible ruins at Mesa Verde National Park.

Comfort in the Creative Cozying up somewhere creative will put a truly unique spin on your Coloradocation. Yurts, huts and tipis – like the one on 37 acres outside Red Feather Lakes – offer unique lodging across the state. In Nathrop, bunk at an octagonal tree house near a hot springs with stunning views. In Mancos, a converted bus serves as an inspiring access point for all that the region has to offer, or stay cozy and romantic in the Bungalow or Lake Side cabins at Willowtail Springs. Discover the eastern plains for birding and photography at A Three Dog Night guest house. Design your own yurt or tipi through the Colorado Yurt Company in Montrose, and then make your way across the state in supreme style.
All About the Entertainment Vacation is all about getting away from the day-to-day, so take it to the next level with some in-house entertainment at your home away from home. At the Movie Manor in Monte Vista, enjoy the world’s only known hotel/drive-in movie theater and catch a flick from the comfort of your room. Murder mysteries offer fun and excitement at the Lumber Baron Mystery Mansion near downtown Denver, or at The Antler’s in Colorado Springs. At the Claremont Inn in Straton, you can make it a murder- mystery weekend. Enjoy a ghost adventure package at the original fear house, The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park where Stephen King wrote The Shining. In Durango, snuggle up in the historic Strater Hotel after a night flashing back to the past at the Diamond Belle Saloon or the Henry Strater Theatre.
A Hard Days Work You’ll never sleep better than after a day of cross-country skiing on one of Colorado’s hut ski trips. Crawl into cozy mountain huts like those offered by San Juan or 10th Mountain Huts. After a day on the back of a horse, roping cattle or out on the range, tuck yourself in with a home-cooked meal and a cozy stay at one of Colorado’s working dude and guest ranches. You’ll be ready for a solid night’s sleep after you spend your days birding for Lesser Prairie Chickens and soaking up ranch life and chuck wagon dinners at Arena Dust Tours in Holly.

Keep it Steamy Night Caps In the shadow of the magnificent Mount Sopris, enjoy a nightcap during your stay-at-the-stills at the Marble Distilling Co. Luxury Inn in Carbondale. In the heart of wine country, rest your weary head at the Leroux Inn, a B & B winery in Hotchkiss, or at the Wine Country Inn in Palisade. New in 2016, lay your head to rest at the Dram Apothecary overnight lodge in the “living ghost town” of Silver Plume.
Celebrate the Centennial In 2016, the National Parks Service celebrates its centennial. Show your support by incorporating one or all of Colorado’s four National Parks into your Colorado-cation. At Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, stay in one of five established campgrounds or haul your tent deep into the backcountry for a sublimely remote rest. Outside Gunnison and Montrose, camp at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, or Gunnison River Farms. Between April and October, unwind and settle in at the Far View Lodge at Mesa Verde National Park, where wildlife, history, and expansive views replace televisions and dreary hotel rooms. And at the Great Sand Dunes National Park, stay in rustic cabins at the Oasis Camping Cabins or in elegant style in the original ranch homestead (built in the 1800s) at nearby Zapata Ranch.
Farmstay Immerse yourself in farm living with a stay at any number of Colorado’s working farms and ranches. At the Horse and Hen Inn in Hayden, the Walker Homestead Cabin will bid you to rest your head after a day of feeding and watering animals, milking cows or goats, collecting eggs, watching birds, fishing or wandering the grounds. In Salida, rest fed and inspired after a day of cheese making at the Mountain Goat Lodge at the foot of the famous Sawatch Mountain Range. Prep peaches for pressing, harvest grapes, and prune the orchards before settling in to a rehabbed “picker cabin” at the Mesa Winds Farm & Winery, where you can count real-live baby-doll sheep.
