FROM THE

PUBLISHER

A Gathering Place I just got home from a small gathering with some classmates from high school. An old friend was visiting from out of state and it was the perfect inspiration for a spontaneous gathering. Due to the magic of Facebook, connecting a few people and settling on a time actually happened pretty easily. Settling on the place was a little trickier. We ended up at a local spot that served our purposes well with cold beers and tasty appetizers. Still I couldn’t help but look forward to a time when we might instead be gathering at the planned Broomfield Civic Center, in an intimate pub or at a beer garden, where we could listen to a live musician and maybe even run into more friends from back in the day. I don’t often use this space for opinions, but as I read and learn about the initial planning for Broomfield’s future Civic Center, one thought keeps coming to mind. There are a LOT of ideas and there might be an inclination to try to implement a LOT of them to make a LOT of people happy. I am reminded of some advice that I received at a very young age; find a few things that you do well, and work to excel at those few things. There are many great ideas on the table for Broomfield’s Civic Center and the process for engaging the community has been robust. I hope that the developers and our community leaders can now step back and determine what is really feasible for the space and what can be done there to meet the needs and wants of the many, and create a successful economic center at the same time. What makes similar spaces successful in neighboring towns? In my mind is it often clear commercial focus and easy access. Whatever Broomfield’s Civic Center ends up looking like, I do look forward to meeting my friend there next time she comes to town. Thanks for reading,

HAPPENINGS

ARTS+CULTURE MARCH 01-31

A Special Kind of Vision By Dan Powers

Broomfield photographer Ted Tahquechi has turned a disability into a surprising and profound source of inspiration: he presents the form of the human body as something to see as beautiful and positive across all body types – yet he is nearly completely blind. “When someone finds out I’m blind they wonder “how could I make good art? And I tell them, a lack of sight doesn’t mean a lack of vision.” His recent collection – six years in the making – is called Landscapes of the Body. It is an abstract fine art exploration of the human body that celebrates physical, ethnic, and age diversity. Ted also hopes to change perceptions of art created by the disabled. Ted is not new to photography; he started in black and white film in college, eventually moving to digital. After college he worked for Atari designing games. In 1999, a car accident left him completely blind in one eye, with only 5% capacity in the other eye. “I tore myself away from my art, not really doing anything for several years, eventually I picked up the camera again, taking pictures at family events.” As he developed a sense of what was going on via these photos, this led him back into his art. In 2004 he went back to school, getting a Degree in Fine Art Photography. As part of that degree, he needed to learn to take portraits – a scary notion for someone whose vision is a dark blur a couple inches from his face. “The way I see the world is through shadows and negative space. So I pondered, ‘What can a portrait represent?’” This led to using low key mode lighting, a style that represents how Ted sees the world. “It focuses on form and shape, light and highlight and negative space.” Beginning with traditional professional models, the project expanded to being an appreciative forum for the human body in all its forms. Models from ages 19 to 66, from physically disabled to petite to plus size to transgender have participated. The images in this collection are black and white nude forms, and are suitable for all audiences. “I love that people can’t tell that I’m completely blind,” said Ted. “I want to change what they think of art.” His collection is on display through the end of March in celebration of the month of photography at the VSA gallery at 909 Santa Fe in Denver. See his online portfolio at www.bodyscapes.photography/.

Aspen Creek Heating & Air Aims to Empower Customers By Kristen Beckman

Chilly inside during the cold winter months? Perhaps your furnace needs a tune-up. Is one of your systems making a funny noise? A service call may be in your future. If it’s time to upgrade any of your home comfort systems or maintain your existing equipment, you have a variety of providers to choose from. Aspen Creek Heating & Air is a family owned and operated heating, ventilation, and air conditioning provider committed to providing quality service to Broomfield and the surrounding communities. Aspen Creek Heating & Air installs and services furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, boilers, whole house and attic fans, steam humidifiers, electric baseboard heaters, evaporative coolers, and air-purification systems. A technician is available for emergency calls 24 hours a day. But sometimes, homeowners can take simple steps to repair, optimize or extend the life of their heating and air conditioning equipment, and Aspen Creek Heating & Air is committed to empowering its customers to perform routine maintenance,

troubleshooting, and small repairs on their own. Regularly changing your home’s furnace filters, for example, can actually prevent issues that might otherwise have necessitated a service call. To help educate its clients about steps they can take to care for their heating and air systems, Aspen Creek publishes blogs on its website (www.aspencreekhc.com) to help clients understand common problems. Topics include what might be causing your furnace to make strange noises, why your furnace might be leaking water, and 14 steps you can take to avoid air conditioning repair costs. The company’s goal is to partner with its clients by helping them care for small issues themselves while calling on the company’s expert technicians to handle more complex problems that might arise. In addition to educational blogs, Aspen Creek also provides valuable coupons for installation and repair services on its website. The company, which works with all major brands, and installs Bryant equipment, is certified by the North American Technician Excellence Group, signifying quality in heating and air-conditioning repair, and is a member of the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce.

This is one of the basic record groups for building families. The course concludes with an explanation of the Family Search website. MARCH 25

Part II, Church Records, Vital Records, and www.Ancestry.com This session will introduce two more record groups important to genealogical research. The program will cover Church records as the go-to records before vital records came into being around 1900. The program will then cover vital records which are the newer records more people are familiar with. They contain more information than do Church records but have not been around as long. This will be followed by an introduction to www.Ancestry.com, a subscription site that is available for free at most public libraries and the National Archives office in Broomfield. Learn about the research information available on this website along with a demonstration of how to search the records. Also learn how to register as a guest. As a guest you can start a family tree and access the 39 free records available on ancestry. Instructor Diane Barbour is past BGS president and a member of the National Genealogical Society and the Association of Professional Genealogists. She has been doing genealogy for more than 15 years. “ Is That Colonoscopy Really Necessary?”

By Paul Deneault, MD

Postponing life’s less-pleasant moments is human nature. We all do it. But if you’re avoiding the colorectal screening known as a colonoscopy, I’m hoping you’ll read this and reconsider. A colonoscopy is one of the rare things we can do to find cancer precursors—in this case, little bean- or cauliflower-like growths called polyps—and remove them before they become cancerous. Let’s begin with the procedure itself. During a colonoscopy, a physician uses a thin, flexible tube with a special camera to check the inner lining of your large intestine—both the colon and rectum. This realtime imaging detects the pre-cancerous polyps I just mentioned, as well as tumors and areas of bleeding. By removing those polyps during the screening, we can cut the risk of cancer by 80 percent! Having this pre-emptive procedure is a key reason we’re seeing the incidence of colorectal cancer drop in the United States. Since we know this screening saves lives, why do people avoid it? Some are concerned about possible pain. If you have the procedure with no sedation, you may have some discomfort. But gastroenterologists can offer most patients medications to counter that. For example, about 75 percent of patients given the sedative Versed report no discomfort. That no-discomfort number goes up to 95 percent for those receiving Propofol. Others say they’re afraid of infection and mention scope procedures making headlines in recent years. Those were for entirely different medical scopes, not the colonoscopes used for this procedure. So you can check that off your excuse list! Who needs a colonoscopy? For the person at average risk of colorectal cancer, we advise having the first screening procedure at age of 50 with another every 10 years. People of African-American heritage are advised to begin five years earlier—at 45, repeating each decade. And those with a family history of colorectal cancer—a first-degree relative that has been diagnosed with the disease—are advised to begin colonoscopies 10 years before their relative was diagnosed, repeating every five years. So, to return to the big question, “Is that colonoscopy really necessary?” ABSOLUTELY! But talk with your doctor about the colorectal screening right for you. He or she may suggest a stool-sample test to detect blood—a screening known as FIT—instead. Whichever, do get tested. Paul Deneault, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist who works closely with physicians at St. Anthony North Health Campus at 4300 Orchard Parkway, Westminster, CO 80023. PLANNING STARTS IN THE SPRING By Kristen Beckman

SUMMER MAY SEEM LIKE IT’S A LONG WAY OFF, BUT NOW IS THE TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT SUMMER CAMP OPTIONS FOR YOUR CHILD BEFORE THE CAMPS FILL UP.

20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MARCH 2017

A

s many as 14 million children attend one of more than 14,000 camps across the United States each year, according to statistics compiled by the American Camp Association (ACA), a national advocacy organization that promotes quality camp and outdoor experiences for children, youth, and adults. Attending camp provides significant benefits for children. ACA’s youth outcomes study found 96 percent of campers said camp helped them make new friends, 93 percent said camp helped them get to know kids who are different from them, and 92 percent said camp helped them feel good about themselves. Camp also has been shown to improve confidence, with 74 percent of campers in ACA’s study indicating they tried new things they were initially afraid to try at camp. “Camp provides opportunities for youth to learn new skills and gain new experiences, including teamwork, collaboration, cooperation, problem solving, resilience, and self-esteem,” said Tom Rosenberg, president and CEO of ACA. “Children will grow and carry these qualities for the rest of their lives.” Before enrolling your child in a day or sleepaway camp, there are a few points parents should consider.

CLOSE TO HOME OPTIONS

IS MY CHILD READY TO GO TO CAMP? There is no magic age at which every child will be ready to attend camp. The ACA recommends parents gauge their child’s readiness by paying attention to their level of excitement. A child who is ready for camp will be more likely to ask questions about camp and show an interest in participating in the decision-making process. Including the child in the search and decisions-making process can help parents determine how interested and ready the child is for camp.

HOW DO I PICK A QUALITY CAMP? Parents should seek information about each particular camp and ask if it is accredited by an organization such as the American Camp Organization, which helps ensure the program meets health and safety standards. Parents also should talk to camp directors and ask questions about the camp’s philosophy and program emphasis, as well as the camp director’s background, said ACA. In addition, to get an idea of the camp environment, parents should ask questions about counselor training, counselor-to-camper ratio, counselor ages, and how the camp handles adjustment issues and homesickness, ACA said.

Close to home, the City and County of Broomfield offers its Camp Explorer day program with excursions to some of the area’s best attractions for kids, including Jump City, the Denver Aquarium, the Broomfield Bay, and Water World. Several local gyms and play centers also offer summer camp options. For example, School of Rock Broomfield offers camps designed to foster a love of music performance and develop ensemble skills. Check with your child’s gymnastics program, dance school, sports organization, scout troop or favorite activity to see if they offer summer camp options or can recommend one. Other parents are also a great resource to find out which day and overnight camp other kids your child’s age have enjoyed. The YMCA offers overnight camps at its sites in Bailey, Deckers, Rye, and Granby for kids ages 6 to 17. Each camp offers several activities campers can choose from, including outdoor and water sports, horsemanship, and marksmanship. YMCA chapters in the Denver and Boulder areas also provide day camp options that offer activities in reading, arts, archery, swimming, canoeing, and more.

HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD PREPARE FOR CAMP? One of the best ways to prepare a child for camp, especially if they are nervous or are attending camp for the first time, is to visit the camp beforehand. Both parents and children can see the camp environment and ask the camp director questions in person to put both at ease.

WHAT KIND OF CAMP SHOULD I CHOOSE FOR MY CHILD? There are a wide variety of day and sleepaway camps available to choose from based on your child’s interests. Some camps have a more general program and provide a range of activities, while others focus on specific interests, including camps focused on technology, art, academics, and sports.

DESTINATION BRoOMFIELD: TIPS FOR A GREAT SPRING BREAK

Staycation By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

Spring is almost here! Though our winter has truly not been that snowy or cold this year, many Coloradans are still looking forward to warmer weather and the longer days of spring. Many try to escape Colorado winters with a spring break trip. However, escaping to the mountains for some spring skiing or traveling to a nice warm sunny beach may not feasible for many families. Luckily, Broomfield has numerous activities to offer families and quite a few of these activities are free or relatively inexpensive.

22

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MARCH 2017

B

roomfield has an amazing trail and park system with more than 66 miles of trails, 700 acres of developed parks, and 45 playgrounds. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate for at least a few days of spring break and everyone can get outside to enjoy the sunshine. Broomfield’s parks have so much to offer. Broomfield’s parks feature amenities including basketball courts, tennis courts, pickle ball courts, inline skating, and a skate park. The City of Broomfield website lists each park and its unique aspects. Broomfield’s batting cages open up in the spring and with new upgrades residents can practice hitting baseballs or softballs for just $1 per token. Another very unique recreation option in Broomfield is the Remote Control Aircraft Space located at West 144th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard, just west of the current 4H Archery Range. The space has been designated for a one-year, pilot program that identifies a public location for flying electric remote control aircrafts. Flying model airplanes is not allowed except at locations designated by the Director of Parks and Recreation. If you or your kids like remote control aircrafts, be sure to check out this unique space. Aircraft must meet certain criteria so be sure to check out the City of Broomfield website for more information.

If the weather is more wintery during spring break, Broomfield has plenty of indoor activities for kids of all ages. The Mamie Doud Eisenhower library has regular free activities for newborns up to teens. Check the library website for details on each program. Adjacent to the library is the Broomfield Auditorium. The auditorium has a variety of music, dance, and theatrical performances throughout the year for all ages. In the month of March, the auditorium will welcome Brazilian Carnival, a dance performance that is free to everyone! Denver Taiko, will perform Japanese drumming on March 10th. If you are looking for educational activities a visit to the Broomfield Depot Museum or the Veteran’s Museum is a must. Both of these local museums do have limited hours so make sure to check their websites for hours of operation. Chipper’s Bowling Alley, located on Nickel Street, is a great place for kids of all ages. If your little one has not mastered bowling quite yet, they have bumper lanes and a bowling ramp to help smaller children roll their ball down the alley. Chipper’s also has an arcade, bar and grill, and just opened up a new laser tag arena. Another great indoor location for kids activities is the Paul Derda Recreation Center. The recreation center has a free indoor playground for young children and for a small daily fee visitors can use the pools, rock climbing wall, gymnastics, and an indoor running track. A variety of classes are also offered at the recreation center for newborns up to teenagers. Classes range from music and dance classes, to day outings for teens with a variety of special activities offered during school breaks. Lastly, Broomfield is also home to a great event center. The 1st Bank Center continuously offers concerts, shows, and events. The Harlem Globetrotters will be coming to Broomfield on March 16th with a fun family show for all ages. If you are not planning on traveling anywhere this spring break do not fret about finding things to do that the whole family will enjoy without breaking the bank. Broomfielders are very fortunate to have plenty of fun activities to keep everyone in the family busy and happy!

Tropical

Winter Recipes By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

By the time March arrives, most of us are aching for spring to arrive. To combat the last of the winter blues, think tropical. Winter fruits, including citrus, pineapple, papaya, and mango are available year-round, and while their bright flavors and colors might get lost amidst a summer buffet, they’re sure to be appreciated in the dark days of winter. Shop a local ethnic market or a grocery store with an extensive selection – you’ll be amazed at how many unusual fruits are available to perk up both sweet and savory winter dishes.

TROPICAL FRUIT OATMEAL • • • • • • • • • •

1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats 1¼ cups dairy or nut milk 1 cup canned coconut milk 1 tbsp. coconut sugar or other sweetener (optional) 1 tbsp. chia seeds 1½ tsp. vanilla extract Dash of salt 1 cup fresh pineapple, chopped ½ cup diced fresh mango ¼ cup coconut flakes, toasted

1. In medium saucepan, combine oats and both milks. Turn heat to high; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to gentle simmer, stir well and cook for 5-7 minutes. 2. Add sugar, chia seeds, vanilla, and salt. Stir well. Cook until oatmeal is desired consistency; divide into two bowls. 3. Top each bowl with half of the pineapple chunks, half of the mango, and half of the coconut flakes. Serve hot.

Seared Scallops with Blood Orange Sauce (Adapted from Fine Cooking) • • • • • •

1-1/4 lb. dry-packed sea scallops, side muscles removed Kosher salt & freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp. unsalted butter 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1 medium shallot, finely chopped (about 1/4 cup) 1 blood orange, squeezed to yield 1/4 cup juice

1. Pat scallops dry and season on both sides with salt and pepper. Heat 1 tbsp. butter and oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until foam from butter subsides. 2. Add scallops and cook, undisturbed, until well browned, 2 to 3 minutes. Flip and cook second side until browned and just barely firm to the touch, 1 to 2 minutes. Don’t overcook! Transfer to a plate. 3. Add remaining 1 tbsp. butter to skillet. Add shallot and a pinch of salt; cook, stirring, until softened, about 2 minutes. Whisk in juice and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve scallops drizzled with sauce and sprinkled with a little pepper.

Mixed Green Salad with Citrus Vinaigrette • • • • • • • • • •

6 cups mesclun mix (or salad greens of your choice) 3 tangerines, tangelos, clementines, blood oranges or other citrus ½ cup slivered almonds, toasted 1 avocado, peeled and diced ½ red onion, thinly sliced ¾ cup olive oil ¼ cup fresh citrus juice 1 shallot, minced 1 clove garlic, minced (or to taste) Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

1. Set citrus on cutting board and trim a tiny slice off each end so citrus sits flat. Using a sharp knife, run blade around curvature of fruit to remove peel and most of pith. Once peeled, hold fruit over bowl. Gently remove individual sections of fruit, allowing juice to collect in bowl. Separate fruit sections from juice using a slotted spoon and set aside. 2. In a glass jar or blender, combine olive oil, citrus juice, shallot, garlic, and salt and pepper. Shake or blend well to combine and taste for seasoning. 3. Wash and dry greens. Mound greens on chilled salad plates and top with almonds, avocado, onion, and citrus sections. Gently spoon dressing over and finish with fresh black pepper.

Have you ever heard that the administration of someone’s estate was a complete mess? Family members fighting, out-of-control expenses, and it took years to complete. Why is this happening? In many estates where there are significant problems, battles, and unnecessary expenses, the individuals actually did “estate planning” prior to their deaths. They prepared a will or living trust. Unfortunately there is a misconception that if you put some estate planning documents in place, that assures things will go smoothly upon your death. This is simply not the case. Putting together simple sets of instruction may provide some guidance for your family upon your death, but those documents alone are not the answer to a smooth administration of your estate. A process of communication among family members, preparation for your eventual death, and setting appropriate expectations among family members are all critical to the outcome you expect from your estate plan. Most families are ill-equipped to teach their family what to do, how to do it, as well as how they should pay for it. If you want your family to have a reasonable chance of administration going smoothly at the time of your death you should enlist the assistance of a results oriented estate planning organization that can help prepare you and your family for the inevitable. Administering an estate is complex and the circumstances and interactions between family members are charged with emotion and grief. Families should invest the time to discuss these important issues, put effective plans in place, and set appropriate expectations among everyone involved. By doing so, your family will receive more of their inheritance after the payment of expenses, receive their inheritance sooner, and have a much better chance of maintaining good family relationships after the estate is settled.

Community Anticipates Broomfield Civic Center as Planning Continues By Dan Powers

The future “Heart of Broomfield” is coming together via hundreds of comments from residents as the Civic Center visioning process moves forward. On February 4, city leaders and the urban design consultants hired by Broomfield City Council presented the latest of the ideas they have gathered – and it seems the future cannot come soon enough for this inspiring new hub for the city.

“We had over 100 people come to the meeting where the developer presented their summary of the comments provided in three prior focus groups,” said Deputy City and County Manager Kevin Standbridge. “The community has been consistently engaged in this effort.” The team from Urban Neighborhoods and City Street Investors outlined the process they called “Custom Crafting” which takes a “Deep dive into community needs and desires prior to starting any design.” It also “ensures the completed project is not only what the community actually wants, but helps ensure financial success.” Joe Vostrejs led the presentation, with an informal new reference to the project titled Broomfield Town Square, a reflection of the sentiments and comments about what is desired as the character of the space. “A lot of time what cities do in these situations is get proposals from developers and evaluate and select the best one. We don’t do it that way,” said Joe. “Before we hire an architect, before we hire a planner, we do focus groups and do this crafting process.” Joe said the focus groups were some of the most engaged he’s ever worked with; they did a deep dive into the commercial options in particular. Their thoughts inform the layout, the potential tenants, the design qualities, and other components that ultimately lead to a successful development for the long term. The themes for the Civic Center vision remain consistent from the past year’s public commentary that people want this to be a social hub that is compelling and offers convenient services: a “vibrant community gathering space” in the form of an old town square. “The vision is that this is where you can meet friends, bump into neighbors and people you know from your kids’ school; have a drink and get dinner and maybe do some shopping,” said Kevin. People who attended the meeting filled out a survey (the same as the focus groups used) ranking their favorite attributes and priorities. Details are still being compiled but ideas such as coffee shops, locally-owned chef restaurants, a deli, ice cream shop, greeting card and gift shops, florists, women’s fashion boutiques and more, emerged. “Perhaps a

28

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MARCH 2017

beer garden with communal seating, a brewpub, local breakfast shop, bakery, wine bar – this is very helpful as we see the high-scoring preferences are in the realm of food, drink, and social gathering places,” said Joe. These ideas will help inform the developer’s planning over the next year. Guiding principles include creating a vibrant, pedestrian friendly, easy flowing space. Public art and park components are desired. Joe also described that the vision includes “exceptional architecture and design of all elements – from buildings to the landscapes – using enduring, high-quality materials and sustainable, environmentally-responsible building practices.” Moderately prices condominiums on upper floors, for-rent apartments, and 55+ senior living residences are also highlighted as desired for the space. Perhaps most crucial is that this space is “postcard worthy” – identifiable as the heart and social center of Broomfield. “When I think of the Civic Center project, I envision it creating a downtown area for Broomfield that is vibrant and brings people from all over Broomfield and beyond,” said Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO of Access Broomfield Chamber. “In considering any downtown area, it really needs to convey a local flair, so I think having locally-owned and family-owned businesses would really create the unique atmosphere for the area. I think the keyword really is unique!” The next step is having a study session with the Broomfield City Council, date to be determined. With their comments and further directives, the developer will hire a land planner who will coalesce the desired uses, functions, and activities. Following this more detailed land use proposal, a pro forma will be presented to Council regarding the financial investment necessary. “This is when Council will look closely at the costs associated with what the citizens have outlined as desired. The developer will come forward with private financing options, with some type of contribution from municipal revenues likely to be proposed. This would all be analyzed and decided upon by the City Council,” said Kevin.

The estimate of overall timing is for the first phases to be completed in 2019. The full PowerPoint and consultant presentation can be seen online at www.broomfield.org

A New Age for

Legacy’s Varsity Boys Basketball By John Bobela

The Legacy Lighting keeps on shining through the 2017 winter season for the Varsity Boys Basketball team as they win game after game. A record of 9-10 and 1-7 in league play in mid-February shows the effort that is being made by many players. Still, the program’s new head coach, Tracy Neely, says there are some aspects of the team that can be improved to pave a more successful path to the remainder of the season. “Our program is in dire need of ‘team first’ guys who give relentless effort and who are tough as nails! My sole focus during my time here is to find the type of players we need to be successful, and preparing them to succeed in every facet of life. Today, our program is woefully lacking in that area,” stated Neely when asked about the momentum that was going to be needed to push the team through the rest of the season victoriously. Last season the school’s record was 13-11 and 6-6 in league play, which was one of the most successful seasons the team had seen at Legacy in a very long time. The program has struggled to keep up with other schools over the past 17 years but as the new coach starts to prove his worth for the program, hopefully the struggle will end, and Legacy will be able to come out on top. “A team first concept” is what the coach and many of the players agree is the soul driving factor to what the team brings to the court during every game in order to work together as a unit other than playing as a scattered court of individuals focusing only on themselves. Several seniors are working as hard as they can in order to leave their mark and their legacy on their

program during their last season, and this is what many players on the team would call the base of the unit driving its way through the season. As Neely stated, “Legacy has struggled almost every year in basketball since the school opened in 2000. As the head coach here, it’s my job to correct that.” So far many would say he is doing as he said he would do. A beginning to a line of seasons that will help the team change and grow with a new leader and will certainly be able to lead the team exactly where it wants to be when it comes to their future win to loss ratios.

Legacy Seniors Hard at Work

On Capstone Project By Jordan Bachus

Students at Legacy High School are taken through their whole schooling being prepared for their final capstone project. Every year seniors at Legacy are hard at work on their capstone projects throughout the year – an effort designed to teach students a variety of skills that will be beneficial in their time after high school. The project is done in hopes of providing the seniors of Legacy with hands-on, professional experience before they graduate and provide a little more experience in the workforce they wish to join. Legacy High School Students

Give the Gift of Life at Blood Drive By Emily Stockhus

Life changing tragedies happen everyday, so hospitals need continuous supplies of blood in order to supply treatments. At Legacy High School, students are saving lives at their annual blood drive, set up by Student Government. This year there were more students donating than ever before, beating the previous record by thirty contributions as well as only having five students not make it to their appointment. Patricia Vigil, a volunteer nurse, commented, “It’s been very busy. We’ve been full all day.” She also seemed very impressed by how prepared and respectful all the students were throughout the day. “Right now, I’m Photo by Emily Stockhus – Just a pinch - Senior Dylan Smith prepares to have his blood drawn for rating Legacy number one out of the Legacy High School Blood Drive. “The whole setup has been cool,” Smith commented, “I haven't felt overwhelmed or freaked out by any of the staff.” In order for him to become a donor, Smith had to go through a schools we’ve been to in my book,” series of tests to make sure he’s an ideal candidate, such as a physical and a short questionnaire. Keep Your TEETH & GUMS Healthy for a Lifetime

By Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO, Broomfield Chamber of Commerce

Dr. Jennifer Helgeson

Mindfulness Mindfulness is, “the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something.” Mindfulness has been growing into a larger movement where people are trying to focus on the present, acknowledge their feelings and thoughts, and accept them. I believe this is becoming more popular as we are bombarded with 24 hours of news and social media updates, and we think we need to be on and ready for anything at any time. You are almost expected to feel something about everything that is going on around you. Aren’t you mad about this news story? Doesn’t this Instagram photo make you sad? Don’t you wish your life was as awesome as this person’s on Facebook? No wonder so many people seem stressed, overwhelmed, and unhappy. We are missing out on special moments every day. Did you notice how beautiful the sunset was last night? Did you have dinner with your loved ones without your cell phone and truly connect? Did you notice how many birds were in the tree outside your office? That’s part of being aware of the world around you. No, life isn’t all rainbows. That’s where the beauty of being mindful can really help us in this crazy world! One way is to think of a feeling you are having like an ocean wave. It can immerse you but just as quickly it goes away. That’s where the work comes in. You acknowledge your feelings, figure out why you feel that way, but then you LET IT GO! That’s the hardest part, especially if you are a very feeling and sensitive person. You can camp out with that feeling for days, weeks, months or years. By letting it go, you are able to continue to move on through your life, experiencing happiness, sadness, anger, love, and live in THAT moment. I am definitely not an expert on this and I am learning more about it every day. If you think this may help you, there are plenty of websites, books, magazines, and religious practices that can help you be more mindful. Choose what works best for you.

Vic and his wife, Patty, were taking a class at the Apple store at FlatIron Crossing shopping center when Vic suddenly collapsed to the floor and became unresponsive. Fortunately, a doctor and an off-duty police officer were also in the store and jumped into action to help save Vic’s life. After assessing Vic’s condition, the doctor determined it was necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Vic while the police officer took over talking with the 911 dispatcher for Patty. “The doctor was keeping my husband alive until the paramedics arrived, and the police officer was able to clearly relay the dire situation in a calm, rational manner,” recalls Patty. “Without those two people and the quick response of the North Metro Fire paramedics, I’d be a widow today.” They didn’t know it at the time, but Vic’s heart suffered from an arrhythmia condition, which sent him into cardiac arrest. The team effort provided by the bystanders, paramedics, and hospital staff was enough to save Vic’s life that day. Vic was one of the fortunate ones. Many victims succumb to cardiac arrest before even reaching the hospital. The fire district is a strong advocate for citizens learning CPR because it can have a great impact on a patient’s survival. According to the American Heart Association, 9 out of 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of the hospital don’t survive. CPR, especially if performed in the first few minutes of cardiac arrest, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival. Yet sadly, less than half of cardiac arrest victims receive CPR before emergency personnel arrive. Anyone can learn to provide handsonly CPR. North Metro Fire Rescue District hosts free hands-only CPR classes throughout the year to teach citizens of all ages how to administer the potentially lifesaving technique. Residents can find the updated list of CPR classes at www.northmetrofire.org/ cprclasses and sign up online or by the phone.
