Our Town I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Go ahead and call me sentimental when it comes to Broomfield. I’ll take the label. And so, this is one of those issues that just makes me proud to be part of this community and honored to share the stories of our hometown.

n page 20, check out the second edition of our spring series featuring articles by our local high school students about our local high schools. This month we include a trio of articles from budding journalists at Legacy High School. I will never forget being an aspiring writer in the late 1980s when then Editor Rosann Doran gave me a chance to write the local high school column in the weekly newspaper. Carrying on the tradition decades later is just one of the reasons I am so excited to share this student content each year. Thank you Legacy for your participation! If you have ever wondered exactly how Senior Resources of Broomfield provides outreach in our community, don’t miss the article on page 28, where we learn about some of SRB’s efforts to help meet special medical needs of local seniors in partnership with its donors and Broomfield Senior Services. Check out the article to learn about the impacts and how you can help other seniors in need. On page 30, I am pleased to draw your attention to an article about Broomfield Young Life, written by another budding journalist, my daughter Allison. If you don’t know about this organization’s work with our local youth, you’ll want to read more. To commemorate the 10th Anniversary of A Precious Child, we feature a story about the organization, its roots, and its founder, Carina Martin, on page 32. In its first year, the organization helped 241 children. Last year that number grew to 44,205. Just let that soak in for a moment. The Broomfield-based organization was even featured on the Today Show last month! Congratulations, Carina, for a decade of priceless work! Check out the article on page 38 to learn about the upcoming expansion of one of our local treasures – the Broomfield’s Veterans Memorial Museum at 12 Garden Center. Find out what is planned – and while you are at it, why not plan a visit with your family over spring break? Spring is just around the corner and on page 40 we will get you thinking about starting a new hobby with our article on Backyard Bee Hives. This one is extra fun for me because it features an interview with my lifelong friend John Long and some great photos of John and his daughter at work on the project. So, call me sentimental. BackStory Theatre presents The Glass Slipper 2.0 (A Cinderella Story) at 6:30 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium. This short, silly show is the perfect way to introduce young audiences to theatre and is based on the story of Cinderella, with the 9-12 year old intermediate and beginning performers of BackStory Academy’s 2.0 class presenting this theatre production made by kids, for kids. Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities presents the Broomshticks in March Madness at 7:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium. Join Broomfield’s own community improv troupe, the Broomshticks, and some of their favorite talented groups from around the area (Red Shirt Landing Party and Breakfast in the Time Machine) for a night of original comedic short- and long-form scenes created on the spot with audience suggestions. Creative Broomfield and BackStory Theatre Academy present A Seussified Pride & Prejudice, by Peter Bloedel, at 7:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium. In this show, one of the greatest romances in all of English literature gets a wacky, rhyming makeover. The Bennet girls have a chance to meet well-to-do suitors at the Ding-A-Ling Prance Dance, but there might be some relatives in the way before they can ride off into the sunset on Honk Jingle Horses. This whimsical retelling is something Dr. Seuss might come up with if he had his way with the time-tested Jane Austen classic. The performance is produced, directed, staged, and performed by teen actors and members of the BackStory Youth Leadership Program! Creative Broomfield presents Lionheart Youth Theatre’s Petra and the Wolf, with staging and puppetry By Glass Half Full Theatre, and original score performed live by Mother Falcon, at 2:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium. This new work for young audiences is inspired from the Prokofiev classic Peter and the Wolf, with captivating large-scale puppetry by Glass Half Full Theatre and a new instrumental score written and performed live by Mother Falcon, a band NPR describes as “the little orchestra that can seemingly do the impossible.” The original work introduces the mischievous but fearless Petra, the granddaughter of the fabled Peter. When a wolf threatens her home and animal friends, her adventures become a showcase of bravery and compassion. The Broomfield Genealogical Society meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Library in the Eisenhower Room. The March presenter is Beth Benko, who will be presenting, City and County Directories: Windows to Your Ancestors’Community. City and county directories list the names and addresses of local inhabitants, and can also provide a picture of the community where our ancestors lived. Like current directories, historical listings show resident’s name and address, and may contain occupation, spouse’s name, and sometimes children’s names. Many directories also have information on cemeteries, newspapers, churches, schools, “secret societies,” maps, and more. They can provide background material to help us see our ancestors in the context of their community. o, you’ve postponed that colonoscopy because “colorectal cancer just doesn’t run in our family.” The truth is, about half of those diagnosed with polyps — the first indication of the disease — said the same thing. But other factors besides genetics came into play. And, while rates have been dropping, colorectal cancer is still the second leading cause of death among cancers affecting both women and men. “The family factor” is just one of the facts Ariana Greenwood, MD, would like to share with you during Colorectal Awareness month. “We find that 40% of women and 60% of men diagnosed with pre-cancerous polyps have no family history, no bleeding, and no symptoms. “Nearly 5% of the population will be diagnosed with colon cancer in their lifetime. That figure might sound low, but it’s not. The American Cancer Society estimated some 95,520 new cases of colon cancer last year, alone. When we find it early (Stage I), the survival rate is 80 to 95%.” Dr. Greenwood continues, “I understand that no one welcomes a colonoscopy. The prep can be inconvenient, even though it’s much easier than in years past. But this is an extremely important preventive test as it allows us to remove pre-cancerous growths.”

OTHER POINTS TO CONSIDER: • The risk of colorectal cancer rises with age. “Turning 50 is kind of the ‘magic number,’” Dr. Greenwood states, “as about 90% of these cancers occur after that point in life. So we recommend people have their first colonoscopy at 50 and repeat every 10 years.”

• One’s risk doubles if a close relative has been diagnosed. “If one’s parent, sibling or child has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer, we generally advise the first colonoscopy take place at age 40, or 10 years younger than the age of diagnosis of the precancerous polyp, whichever is younger. The same is true if there are two or more second-degree relatives — a grandparent, aunt or uncle — affected. It’s important, though, that this scheduling be individualized as other risk factors may affect the timing.”

Preparing for Spring Season By Ellie Bouchard-Miller

As spring approaches Legacy’s athletes prepare for the start of their sports season; working together and trying their hardest to be the best that they can. “Runners down!” *BANG!* And they’re off. Track season at Legacy High School has begun and it looks to be very popular. Getting to run with your friends every day, and compete against other schools is an exhilarating experience. Adam Prosser, a tenth grader at Legacy, said, “I really enjoy training for track; it allows me to put in as much effort as it takes to become better and be the best that I can be. Winning the race makes me so excited, I almost can’t contain it sometimes. I become so proud of myself when I beat someone from another school.” Prosser further explained that his favorite event is either the 800 meters or the 800-meter relay.” My time for the 800 sprint is 2:18. I hope to improve that by at least five seconds.” In this sport, an athlete can experiment with many different elements, such as, jumping, sprinting, and distance running. He or she can meet many new people and make a lot of new friends. In addition, running can get you into really good shape. Last year, Legacy’s track team was fairly close, and they always had lot of fun. The coaches of the team have high hopes for the team this year as well. Greg Miller (sprinters coach) is really looking forward to “seeing how much the kids have improved since last year.” Training is a huge part of track: Athletes have to gain endurance and, muscle,

and have to eat healthier so that running becomes easier. Running can easily change a person’s life; the anticipation, the adrenaline rush before a race, and getting to participate in something fun while seeing your friends, are just a few of the perks. Overall this is a very interactive and fun sport to be a part of.

The snowy weather and the excitement in the halls of Legacy High School created the perfect atmosphere for the start of the school’s annual Winter Week. Free hot chocolate coincided perfectly with pajama day, which saw students snuggled up in their blankets and pajamas. The conditions took a sharp turn as students busted out their leather jackets and graphic band tees for a day of rock and roll fun. Thursday was filled with throwbacks as students dusted off their Justice shirts and silly bands. Some students even recreated old trends such as bottle flipping. School spirit was abundant as the Legacy colors of navy and gold filled the halls on Friday. On Friday between second and third period, students hurried into the gym excited for the Winter Week pep assembly. Students eagerly awaited the arrival of the winter sports athletes and were surprised with exciting grand entrances from each team. The girls swim and dive made a splash as they carried two swimmers into the gym. One athlete from the girls’ basketball team ran in, shot, and made an imaginary 3-pointer as her teammates celebrated around her. The boys’ basketball team certainly made an entrance with their recreation of a bowling game. The wrestlers ended the show on a high note as they paraded in on each other’s shoulders. Legacy’s poms and cheer teams riled the crowd up with exciting chants and energy-building dances. Teachers and students alike busted a move on the gym floor as they were put through the ringer with a medley of different dance styles.

Throughout the assembly, a panel of spirit judges evaluated how much energy and spirit each class had, and all students anxiously awaited the results to see who would be the champion. After each class was tested on their PARTY chants, roller coaster performances, and student dance moves, the spirit judges had finally reached a consensus. To everyone’s surprise, the 11th grade class had dethroned the reigning Seniors and were the victors of this spirit competition. Almost immediately, the Junior section of the stands erupted into cheers as students celebrated this almost unheard of accomplishment. About their success, Karli Thompson said, “being a Junior, I was very happy. By the end of that assembly I was sweating so hard from jumping up and down.” No one can deny that Legacy students, especially the Juniors, have an overwhelming amount of school spirit. As the dead of winter creeps upon Broomfield, the talent at Legacy High School is alive and well. In fact, it’s filled with passion and energy, and what better way is there to showcase extraordinary abilities than a talent show?

From electric guitars to sign language, LHS students performing at the recent talent show presented a wide variety of pieces, keeping the audience both entertained and impressed. To kick things off, Andrew and Destiny Ku performed “Somewhere Only We Know,” with Andrew strumming the guitar and Destiny beating a cajón, which is not only a drum that is meant to sit on, but a drum that Destiny mastered. To go along with the melody, both Andrew and Destiny sang, harmonizing and creating a sound that only a bond as strong as siblings could create. Another act was vastly different and quite unique. Seven Hake and Kat Porter performed “History Maker” but with a twist. While Kat sang her heart out, Seven signed the song in American Sign Language, sparking a fire in the hearts of the audience; Kat’s voice complemented Seven’s movements, and the two seamlessly blended to form a single act that was nothing short of powerful. A little while after Seven and Kat, Shelby Horne stole the stage. Singing “Rise Up,” her voice carried through the auditorium like a symphony. “I felt nervous,” Shelby said. “It’s such a big song, but I’ve been working hard on being able to hit the notes for a while, so I felt relieved after it was done.” The end of the goosebump-worthy performance left Shelby up on the stage,

practically oozing with raw talent. Nathan Cornejo and Ruby Schumacher ended the night singing “Light a Roman Candle With Me,” a simple, sweet song that the pair nailed. Ruby sang alongside Nathan, who played the guitar and also hit some notes himself. The harmonizing created a serenity that let the audience escape from reality and enter a world with lazy evenings, sandals, and single cups of tea. In the end, it was Shelby Horne who took home not only first place, but the hearts of everyone who heard her sing. Shelby said she was “really shocked. There were a lot of other talented people, and I didn’t think I had a really stick out, but I was so happy to have won.” Needless to say, Shelby’s hard work definitely paid off.

Thank You, Volunteers National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, 2018

ational Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, voice, and support to causes they care about in our community. Their stories can serve to inspire others to find ways to take action that create change, and 2017 provided many opportunities for everyday heroism in the realm of volunteering. As in every major natural disaster, hurricanes in Puerto Rico, Texas, and Florida, earthquakes in Mexico, and fires in California brought volunteers from many parts of the United States to answer the call of compassion in action. But closer to home, volunteers change lives too. And every volunteer counts, for as many have said, to the world, you may be one person, but to one person, you may be the world. Senior Resources of Broomfield (SRB) is a nonprofit organization striving to enhance the quality of life for all seniors and their families through fundraising, assistance programs, volunteerism, and advocacy. SRB’s efforts are focused on the nutritional, medical, and social needs of our older population who cannot afford to pay for these services. With the population of the country continuing to age and more individuals reaching senior status, the demand for assistance, information, and advice continues to increase. As President of SRB, I see lives being changed for the better on an almost daily basis. For instance, in December, SRB learned of a grandmother who needed hearing aids and could not only not afford them, she could not even afford to put food on the table and was using a credit card to purchase basic necessities. SRB paid for hearing aids so she could hear her grandchildren. When told she would receive this donation, she was thrilled to the point of tears. This is why we volunteer our time and ask for you in the Broomfield community to share the gifts of time and financial resources! Many people are surprised to learn that SRB is an independent nonprofit and not a part of city/county government. Because we are a nonprofit, we depend on contributions from donors to support the Meals on Wheels, handyman, and medical needs programs we fund.

SRB and Broomfield Senior Services Partner to Meet Special Medical Needs This month, we interviewed Lane Claxton, Program Coordinator for Senior Services at the Broomfield Community Center about how Senior Resources of Broomfield and the City of Broomfield’s Senior Services partner to provide outreach to Broomfield’s senior community, especially in the area of medical assistance.

Q: How can Broomfield seniors in need get con-

nected to the Broomfield Senior Center/Senior Services and/or Senior Resources of Broomfield for help with medical needs? Is there a process to apply for or request help?

A: Broomfield’s older adult population has

steadily increased over the past decade growing from 5,446 in 2005 to 10,650 in 2015, essentially doubling in size. In the coming years, Broomfield is expected to continue to experience significant growth in the population of older adults. In fact, Colorado’s State Demographer projects Broomfield’s 60 and older community will grow 28% between 2015 and 2020. Longer term, between 2015 and 2040, the number of Broomfield residents over the age of 60 is expected to more than double again, growing from 10,650 residents in 2015 to a projected 24,540 residents in 2040. This enormous growth puts a strain on City of Broomfield resources and we are therefore grateful to have support from Senior Resources of Broomfield, Inc. (SRB). Senior Services has three main functions: nutrition, transportation, and community resources. Community resources include the loan closet, the handyman program, information assistance and referrals, educational presentations, support groups, the Caregiver Respite program, and resource coordination. In addition to other funding organizations, SRB has historically provided financial assistance for those qualified for the special needs program. The Community Resources Program Coordinator provides assistance to Broomfield seniors in an effort to maintain their independence and safety. The process involves talking with a senior about their needs, providing them with an SRB financial assistance form, sometimes helping them fill out the form, and reviewing the form for qualification based on information provided. Seniors must be residents, 60 years or older, and in need. Those on Medicaid who apply, automatically qualify. Service providers must be willing to accept payment after services or products have been rendered.

Q: Please give a few examples of the types of assistance that the Broomfield Senior Center is able to facilitate through financial contributions from SRB.

A: Hearing aids, needed dental assistance, eye glasses, special shoes or orthotics are some of the most common types of assistance. Q: How important is the relationship between Broomfield Senior Services and SRB to meeting the needs of our Broomfield seniors?

A: Extremely important. Broomfield Senior Services has a great relationship with SRB. SRB is the expert at raising the funds needed to help our seniors in need, and Broomfield Senior Services helps make the connections to those in need. It’s a match made in heaven.

A: A senior needed a new pair of hearing aids that she could not afford so that she could communicate with her family in person and hear them on the phone. SRB was able to fund that request. She was so very grateful and even wrote a thank you note referring to SRB and Senior Services as “her new friend.” SRB is currently in the process of assisting another senior individual who had not been to the dentist in several years. She had a toothache and was encouraged to go get help. A local Broomfield dentist was willing to provide an exam in order to provide Senior Services with the supporting documentation needed for review and approval. The dentist is also willing to accept payment from SRB after all services have been performed.

CITY OF LIGHTS Young Life Touches the Lives of Hundreds of Broomfield Kids By Allison Eichner

Few high school activities will continue throughout the rest of a student’s life. Few will go on to be in a professional ensemble. Few will go on to play professional football. Few will end up on Broadway. The rest are in the many. I am in the many. But the passion I found in high school will stick with me for the rest of my life. I chose to join Young Life in high school and become a follower of Christ.

oung Life is an international Christian based organization whose goal is to reach the kids who are otherwise thought to be unreachable. Unlike many other youth ministries, Young Life leaders don’t wait for kids to come to them; they seek kids out. Through presence at school events and networking through other students, leaders work to build meaningful relationships with kids. Their goal is to get kids to come to club; the craziest place a high schooler could go on a Wednesday night. Club is nothing like a stereotypical youth group; at club, students play the most insane games, leaders put on hilarious skits, and everyone sings and dances to their favorite songs. But what happens at the end of the night is the highlight of club. One leader gets up, talks about their life, and reads the gospel to the students. And they listen. Many kids hear about Jesus for the first time at club, and, for some, that’s where they decide to become followers. This is Young Life’s mission: to give every kid an opportunity to hear about Jesus and a chance to respond to His life changing message. This is

uniquely done through the authentic relationship between leader and student. Last year, 93 percent of Young Life kids reported that they have an adult outside of their household that they trust, compared with only 25 percent of Adams County high schoolers. Above all else, their intention is to love and care for kids and form a relationship with them. Through trust, mentorship, and friendship leaders earn the right to be a part of kids’ lives and teach them how to walk in the Christian faith. Young Life has been active in Broomfield since 2011. It started with seven kids meeting in a house, to now two Young Life clubs, a WyldLife club for middle schoolers, a Capernaum club for students with special needs, and Young Lives for teen moms; overall, Young Life reaches nearly 600 Broomfield students. With two clubs, Broomfield/Adams County Young Life reaches students at Legacy High School, Broomfield High School, Prospect Ridge Academy, Jefferson Academy, Holy Family High School, and The Academy. Leaders are volunteers who take on all kinds of roles in the community from mortgage brokers to substitute teachers. While working toward building relationships with students, they are constantly supporting Broomfield schools. As a non-profit organization, Young Life is dependent on community support and donations. Their main fundraiser is their annual banquet. This year the theme is The City of Lights. The program will include how Broomfield Young Life has grown in the last year, goals for the coming year, and how you can help the growth of the Broomfield club. The banquet will take place on Friday, April 13, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Stonebrook Manor Event Center and Gardens in Thornton. Ten years ago, Carina Martin was looking for a way to help less fortunate children living in Broomfield. After speaking with government agencies and educational leaders, Martin realized there were gaps in services that human service agencies were unable to fill.

nwilling to accept the status quo, Martin enlisted the help of her friends and family to address these gaps, aiming to help reduce poverty by focusing on empowering children. Initially operating out of her garage, Martin founded A Precious Child on Nov. 11, 2008, on the premise that every child is precious and deserves dignity, respect, and a chance to achieve success. That year, 241 children received clothing, shoes, coats, and other essentials thanks to the grassroots efforts of Martin and A Precious Child’s early supporters. Since then, the organization has experienced tremendous growth, increasing the number of children it serves to 44,205 disadvantaged and displaced children last year. During the past decade, A Precious Child has focused its efforts on assisting children and families facing difficult life challenges, such as abuse, neglect, poverty, and crisis situations. “Our core initiatives help build the whole child, by providing basic essentials such as clothing, coats, shoes, and toiletries as well as helping families navigate community resources, working with schools to strengthen attendance initiatives, providing services and resources to agency partners to strengthen their impact, providing extracurricular and academic opportunities, as well as backpacks and school

supplies, computers, and other essential supplies,” said Martin, who now directs A Precious Child as its unpaid, volunteer CEO. The organization has much to be proud of as it prepares to mark its tenth anniversary this year, and it credits the community members who volunteer for and donate to its projects for helping it meet its mission. “Through this support we have been able to provide resources and opportunities to the

many children living in Broomfield who are in need and throughout Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, and Weld Counties,” said Martin. “A Precious Child has grown to support more than 350 agency partners, which include health and human services, schools, fire and police departments, churches, nonprofits, hospitals, foster care organizations, mental health centers, teenage pregnancy care centers, and shelters to identify children and families in the most need of our services.” A Precious Child has eight programs, including Precious Essentials, Basics for Babies, Inspiring Minds Center, Edussentials, Precious Gift, giveSPORTS, Fill A Backpack, and giveARTs. In addition, A Precious Child has 30 boutiques located in schools and shelters where it can meet the most pressing needs of children easily and quickly. This work is done through the organization’s Child Outcomes Resource Center, where child advocates provide personalized case management to disadvantaged and displaced children and families, connecting them with needed resources, services, opportunities, and educational support. To meet these needs and keep up with the demand for its services, A Precious Child relies on community involvement. Community members and corporations can donate new and gently used clothing, shoes, socks, coats, sports equipment, small household items, kitchenware, linens, towels, sheets, and other essentials for distribution to children and families in need. They can also make a monetary donation, host a drive to collect clothing and essentials, or volunteer. The staff of A Precious Child plans to gather this year for a staff retreat at Twin Lakes to reflect on the more than 232,000 children and caregivers the organization has helped during the past decade and to set goals going forward that align with its vision of a future where every child grows up to be a secure, self-reliant, contributing member of their community.

A part of the Denver Mountain Parks system located in Lookout Mountain Park, the site overlooks the spacious vistas of the Great Plains and the Rockies. Hiking trails, a gift shop, museum, and that famous grave attract more 400,000 visitors annually. Born in Le Claire, Iowa Territory in 1846, William F. Cody was a skilled buffalo hunter, gaining him the nickname “Buffalo Bill.” The Museum exemplifies the life, times, and legend of William F. Cody, including information about Buffalo Bill’s career and the Wild West shows, Native American objects, and firearms. Broomfield’s Veterans Memorial Museum Expanding a Local Treasure By Bette Erickson

There is a lot going on at Broomfield’s Veterans Memorial Museum (BVMM) at 12 Garden Center. Most recently and perhaps most importantly is the exciting and much-needed expansion of the facility.

ast year, Broomfield’s food bank, FISH (Fellowship In Service Humanity) relocated to 6 Garden Center leaving the entire downstairs of 12 Garden Center empty. The building, constructed in 1963, is approximately 7,300 square feet. The entire building housed the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library until about 2001. After negotiations with the City and County of Broomfield last November, the BVMM was given the go-ahead to expand its collections to use the downstairs space as well. “I’m excited about it,” said BVMM Board President and longtime Broomfield resident Dave Lewis. “It’s going to be wonderful for the Museum, allowing us to double our space and expand exhibits.” Mr. Lewis explained plans including having dedicated and expanded Korea and Vietnam Rooms, and a new exhibit with information and artifacts from the Cold War. “This expansion will allow us to do more in-house presentations,” he added. One of those popular in-house presentations is their Coffee and Conversation events.

A Garden Center grand reopening is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 14 at 6 Garden Center recognizing FISH, Broomfield Early Childhood Council, the Depot Museum and the Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum. The event is free and open to the public.

The Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum hosts a free, public Coffee and Conversation event from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. Guest speakers and veterans share experiences and stories over coffee and light refreshments in an informal setting at the museum. Mr. Lewis, a Vietnam Veteran with his own important story to tell, said the Museum will continue to house archives on the first floor and incorporate a new work area, while the library will move downstairs. He expects the moving of the library, including a new research library, to be arduous with some 1,500 books to shelve. But the good news, he says, is that 900 or so books – currently

stored off-site in the basement of a supporter’s house – will finally get to be moved to the museum. With the added space, a presentation room will now allow 60 seats to remain set in place, without the need for moving chairs to and from a storage area for events. Community nonprofit groups will also be able to use the expanded BVMM presentation space. A new projector and sound system are in the works as well, and the downstairs renovations are expected to be complete by mid-to late March. In addition, the move will mean new office space for American Legion Post 58. The BVMM is an all-volunteer organization, with the exception of a shared, part-time curator who also works for Broomfield’s Depot Museum. Veterans and non-veterans make up the volunteer structure, Board of Directors, and membership. Operational funds for the Museum come from donations and grants. The BVMM Board and volunteers support several free annual community programs such as the Veterans Day and Memorial Day programs, Flag Day Ceremony, Constitution Day, and hosting numerous veterans, senior, school, and scout troop visits. The Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum was established in 2002 to honor men and women who have served in the armed forces of the United States, preserving and perpetuating military history for the benefit and education of generations to come. Memberships are $20/year and include members-only events, newsletters, and more. The museum is free and open to the public. Museum hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturdays and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Thursdays. The museum is also open by appointment during the week. For group tours, call 303-460-6801. You’ve likely heard the buzz about declining bee populations, along with the concerns about what impact this could have on our food supply. Bees are among an important group of creatures — including ants, butterflies, birds, and wasps — responsible for pollinating the flowering plants that supply our food.

BUILDING A HIVE

But Long didn’t know anyone who had established a backyard hive, and local educational resources were limited, so he learned the basics through internet research. The process, he said, was fairly simple. He bought a hive ‘box’ that includes a frame and honeycombs and then ordered his bees—about 1,000 bees and a queen—which he picked up early in the Spring. After introducing the bees to the box and providing some early food support for the young bees, Long said he was able to sit back and watch the bees work. He had an unusually successful first year with his backyard colony, which produced about 60 jars of honey. But as with many hobbies, beekeeping had its challenges, and Long’s hive died out during the second year, perhaps because of a

ccording to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one-third of all crops require insect pollination, and managed honey bee colonies are the primary pollinators for these crops, but honeybee hives have decreased from 6 million in the 1940s to about 2.5 million today. Government agencies have taken notice and are creating initiatives to encourage efforts to restore pollinator habitats. Last year, a honeybee hive was installed on the grounds of the Vice President’s residence in Washington to highlight a new initiative that encourages Americans to help bees by setting up hives where possible and planting bee-friendly flowers and flowering herbs in their gardens and yards. For most Americans accustomed to avoiding bees, the idea of inviting bees into their backyard is perhaps a bit daunting. But backyard beekeeping can be a fascinating and beneficial hobby that doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult. In 2015, Broomfield adopted rules for backyard beekeeping that require minimum setbacks, flyaway barriers, and a supply of fresh water. In addition, backyard beekeepers must obtain a license issued by the Department of Community Development.

late cold snap that may have weakened the bees and left the hive vulnerable to a swarm of foreign bees, he said. “It’s not a science; it’s an art,” said Long. Rather than poring over what might have gone wrong, Long said he’s focused on continuing to learn about beekeeping and trying again. As such, he’s already ordered a new set of bees for his hive. And he encourages others to consider building backyard hives. His own garden benefitted during the year his hive was thriving and more people engaging in the hobby means a larger community of beekeepers that can help each other succeed, he said. “Don’t think it’s a major investment or you have to be very specialized,” said Long, who said he spent about $200 for basic equipment and bees. “If you have a passion for it or an interest in it—and a permit—you can be successful.”

GARDENERS CAN HELP TOO Following are several tips provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that can help gardeners create a bee-friendly habitat to support local bees. •

Create an attractive environment for pollinators. Choose pollinator-friendly plants that bloom during the spring, summer, and fall. It is especially important to plant flowers that bloom early in the spring and late in the summer so bees have adequate food when emerging from and preparing for winter hibernation.

Limit use of pesticides. A healthy garden with the appropriate plant species and an abundance of pollinators will support natural beneficial insects that reduce the need for pest control. Removing dead leaves and debris along with handpicking, crushing or spraying soapy water to remove plant pests can be practical and effective.

Include a variety of plants with different flower sizes, shapes, and colors, as well as plants with varying heights and growth habits to support a larger number of pollinators.

Strong Start to 2018 for

Broomfield Chamber This promises to be a banner year for the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce. We started off the year with our Annual Members meeting in January providing timely information regarding the Future of Broomfield, held the best attended January After Hours we have ever had, and welcomed many new members joining as small as solopreneurs and as large as businesses with more than 400 employees. However we can’t rest on our laurels; things are just warming up! In February we had multiple Member Spotlights and another After Hours, and now in March we are ready to roll into our Annual Gala at the Omni Hotel with a fun night of food, drink, and “gambling” for prizes. At the Gala we will also celebrate those businesspeople that help to make our Chamber and our community great. The Gala is open to the public and promises to be an amazing event for all who attend. If you want to know what the new excitement in the Chamber is all about, this is a must attend event. And all of this is only in the first quarter of 2018! We are always looking for new ideas on how to engage our member businesses with each other and with other organizations in the community. With our newly energized board, we are continually looking for ways to implement the ideas that come from all corners of the community. From a nonprofit based engagement group and a series of seminars dedicated to building leaders in our community, to business development classes with our partnership with the Small Business Development Center, our ideas are only limited by the number of volunteers we have to help us. As a fiscally prudent chamber, we have a very small paid staff. This is a good thing because we rely on the involvement of our members to make things happen. Here at the Broomfield Chamber, our motto is Return on Involvement: when you put your time and effort into the Chamber, helping to create events, welcoming new businesses to the community, and supporting our local nonprofits, you will get more back than you put into it. Not on day one of course, and some weeks you will give much more than you receive, but our membership is built on the support and involvement of our members, and is much greater than the sum of its parts. Bill had lost his job, and with the extra time at home he discovered his wife's infidelity. Their marriage was over. Bill's father had died seven years ago and left him a substantial inheritance. Not believing that his wife could do such a thing, Bill had simply combined the inheritance with the other family assets. Unfortunately, in the divorce there was no way to determine what was the inheritance and what was the marital property. Being unable to determine the difference, the judge divided all of the assets between Bill and his unfaithful wife, including his inheritance. But it didn't have to be this way. If Bill's father had done a thorough estate plan, he would have left the inheritance to Bill in trust. Bill would control the trust, but the trust would help him keep the inherited assets separate from the marital assets. If Bill used and enjoyed the assets inside the trust for his benefit, but did not draw them out, he could have easily identified the inherited assets in the divorce. As a result, the inherited assets would have been his separate property and would not have been divided. A properly designed estate plan can provide many additional advantages that protect your family. These types of protections are ignored in estate plans using cookie-cutter forms. Individuals should look closely at all of the benefits a properly designed estate plan can provide them while they are alive, and provide their families after their death. Disaster Response Requires Coordinated Effort

North Metro Fire Rescue Answers the Call By Sara Farris

any people think of firefighters as the ones who respond to structure fires, auto accidents, and emergency medical calls. However, North Metro Fire Rescue District also trains and equips specialized teams that respond to wildland fires, technical rescues, and hazardous materials incidents, all of which are resource intensive incidents. Firefighters on these teams receive extensive training in their area of specialty and may deploy to large-scale incidents across the nation at any given time. For large-scale natural disasters, no one department or even neighboring fire departments can handle the incident with their resources alone while still providing emergency coverage for their own city or district. It takes a regional and often national response. By deploying teams from other areas, the government is able to cover the response needs for the disaster without taxing any one department so much that they can’t provide for their own district.

Wildfire Deployments

The past year was a busy year for wildland deployments. North Metro Fire sent firefighters to 13 different wildfire areas from the West Coast to the Great Plains. They also deployed crews within Colorado and locally to Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport to service firefighting aircraft. As part of their tasks, crews would attack active fire areas and provide structural protection by clearing debris around homes and making a perimeter to provide a buffer against an impeding fire. Some firefighters deployed as individuals to serve as division supervisors and heavy equipment operators. Other crews provided assistance to fire departments that had all of their wildland resources already deployed and needed help to protect their own area from wildfires. Over the years, North Metro’s wildland firefighters have gained essential experience and knowledge working large wildfires that have enabled them to develop safer and more efficient operational strategies for attacking grass fires back home.

Hurricane Rescue and Recovery While wildfires brought the majority of deployments for North Metro firefighters in 2017, they weren’t the only disasters requiring a national response. North Metro Engineer Brian LaFleur was deployed with CO-Task Force 1 for three weeks to Texas and Florida to assist residents recovering from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. His team partnered with the Air

National Guard in Texas to run an evacuation center that would assess residents for medical conditions and provide essential resources to meet their basic needs. In the Florida Keys, LaFleur and his team conducted structural searches, canvassing neighborhoods looking for any stranded residents who hadn’t evacuated prior to the hurricane’s arrival. They conducted health assessments to figure out the needs of each individual and also assessed larger structures for structural integrity, blocking off structures deemed unsafe to inhabit. Task force members experienced the conditions as the locals did, spending the majority of nights sleeping outside, eating military-style Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) and being isolated from modern amenities. LaFleur said the experience allowed him to truly empathize with the local residents and provided additional motivation to keep working the long hours each day. When he returned to Colorado, LaFleur applied the lessons he learned to develop emergency response pre-plans for a range of hazards while ensuring the potential needs of residents were accounted for.

The Bigger Picture

When it comes to emergency response for large-scale incidents, taking a collective approach benefits everyone. As a result of collaboration amongst north area fire agencies, North Metro Fire is able to focus training and equipment costs on a select group of individuals who provide response expertise for highly technical and risky events that occur less frequently. This benefits agencies responding to local incidents as well as national emergencies.
