FROM THE

ATTENTION FOODIES!

I am very pleased to share our second annual restaurant issue! This is The Broomfielder’s guide to the local restaurant scene. Please dive in to find your favorites or discover something brand new.

W

e are proud to evolve the concept this year by pairing this issue with Taste It Broomfield and partnering with the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce to bring you this year’s tasting event. Taste It will provide a cornucopia of samplings from the area’s restaurants, caterers, breweries, and wineries. In today’s complicated world, there is still one thing that always brings people together – food! On June 11, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the 1STBANK Center, and for only $20, you can join your friends and neighbors in an evening of music, community, food, and spirits, and try out some of the local eateries that should be on your summer “list.” This event is for those 21 years of age and older. We wanted to take the opportunity to help our neighbors in need through this event. The Broomfield FISH Youth Advisory Board will be holding a food drive at the Taste It Broomfield event. Please bring a non-perishable food donation for FISH to Taste It and be eligible to win prizes that night. Mark you calendar and don’t miss the food and fun! You can purchase Taste It tickets at www.broomfieldchamber.org.

Thank you Broomfield Rotary I would like to thank the Broomfield Rotary Club for welcoming me and The Broomfielder’s Owner and Publisher Mike Garrison to a present at a recent meeting. It was great fun to see many familiar faces and I was very inspired to learn about the numerous ways this club touches multiple groups and organizations in our community. Thank you Broomfield Rotary for your volunteerism, outreach, and community support throughout Broomfield. Look for more stories about their work in future issues. BCF Accepting Grant Applications Another pillar of Broomfield, the Broomfield Community Foundation, is now accepting grant applications in the areas of civic projects, human services, arts and humanities, seniors, and education. Grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations that serve Broomfield residents. The application deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1. To access complete details, go to the web site at www.broomfieldfoundation.org and click on the grants tab and the grant application. For more information, call 303-469-7208 or e-mail info@broomfieldfoundation.org. Grants will be awarded at Dancing with the Broomfield Stars on September 24.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT

MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS

Teach Military History, Honor Fallen Soldiers By Kristen Beckman

Memorial Day is a day to reflect on the sacrifices our nation’s soldiers and veterans have made to protect our freedom. Many local events are planned to offer citizens the opportunity to honor these men and women and learn about military history.

T

he Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum will again host its annual community Memorial Day event along with the City and County of Broomfield and the Broomfield Lion’s Club. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, May 25, at the Broomfield County Commons Park. Scheduled events include a presentation of the colors, recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, an invocation, and comments by Mayor Ahrens, said Vance Rasmussen, a museum board member and event organizer who is also a Vietnam veteran. Attendees also will be treated to special music performed by the Colorado Frontier Band, a group focused on historical music whose members wear Civil War uniforms and play 19th century instruments. The Broomfield Civic Chorus will also be on hand to provide additional music during the event. Following the opening activities, a variety of military history exhibits will be on display in the grassy areas of the park. As in previous years, attendees will be able to view World War II era vehicles and gear, and uniformed World War II reenactors will perform.

14

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2015

The Broomfield Lion’s Club will sell hamburgers and hot dogs for visitors who would like to have a picnic lunch during the event. Rasmussen said around 500 people are expected to attend, and the event draws increasing numbers of visitors each year. Visit www.broomfieldveterans.org or call 303-902-6521 for more information.

Several other events are planned in the Denver area for Memorial Day weekend: •

The Colorado Freedom Memorial will be the site of a variety of activities Saturday, May 23 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. The memorial is located in Aurora at Springhill Community Park near Buckley Air Force Base. Events begin at 10:30 a.m. and include military reenactments, a memorial ceremony, and a free concert at 7:00 p.m. performed by the Denver Brass, Sound of the Rockies men’s chorus, and the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and Drill Team. More information is available at www.cfmf.net.

The 14th Annual Veteran’s Memorial Day Tribute in Denver is scheduled May 23 and includes a formal 2-hour presentation with a wreath ceremony to honor fallen soldiers and a reading of the names of Colorado’s fallen veterans accompanied by a Navy bell. Final details are still being arranged. More information is available at www.facebook.com/events/1525301684404640/

Commerce City hosts the state’s largest Memorial Day parade with more than 100 entries. This year will be the city’s 51st year hosting the parade, which begins at 10:00 a.m., May 25, and starts at 64th Avenue and Newport Street. The parade route is 1.5 miles long and entries include military units, bands, floats, antique cars, and horses. More information is available at www.c3gov.com/parade.

Be-You-Tiful: Find Your Perfect Hairstyle By Dan Powers

Imagine your best friend is unbelievably talented, motivated to make you look beautiful, and owns a fantastic salon. She is highly trained and knows the right look for your personality and lifestyle. She keeps mastering the latest techniques in hairstyling so you can choose from elegant, gorgeous, and fun styles. The best part is this isn’t a dream, this is what guests of Appearances Hair Color & Design Studio experience on every visit – and the Appearances team wants to meet you!

S

ondra and Jim Thrasher are the co-founders of Appearances Hair Color & Design Studio. Jim has more than 30 years’ experience in the salon industry. When the couple moved to Colorado 14 years ago they couldn’t find a place that had the atmosphere they desired – so like any motivated entrepreneurial couple with a love for hairstyling, they opened their own place. “We began with a vision to create an upscale salon with a friendly and caring atmosphere. We wanted a place where the employees actually felt like part of a family, the styles were fantastic, and the customer service was exceptional; we decided to create it ourselves,” says Sondra. In their contemporary, spa-like atmosphere you can choose from the latest in styles, coloring and highlights, subtle cuts, straightening, gorgeous perms, and more. Appearances has a goal that you will look stunning days after you leave the salon: they will give you the tips, tricks, and secrets to help you maintain your style at home. “I would have to say the most rewarding part of my job is the human interaction,” says Sondra. “I love it when a client is absolutely glowing because she not only looks beautiful, but she feels beautiful!” Sondra’s enthusiasm is shared by industry experts: Salon Today magazine has named them one of the Top 200 Salons in the nation the last seven years in a row. They have also received various industry customer service and employee recognition awards.

Beyond offering their talents to clients, Appearances’ team sets a standard for community philanthropy. They have volunteered at Children’s Hospital and for the St. Baldric’s Foundation, shaving people’s heads to benefit children’s cancer research. “We have done cut-a-thons where clients donate money and we donate our services to help benefit a specific cause – such as helping raise funds for a funeral for a client’s young nephew who passed away suddenly; another time to help a client who had fallen on hard times,” says Sondra. This spirit of support and connection echoes through the compliments they get from guests, like “Now that I’ve found your salon, I’m never leaving.” The most rewarding messages Sondra describes receiving are the handwritten cards or letters telling her what a difference they have made in a guest’s life. “It blows me away me every time,” she says. “I LOVE waking up and coming to work, because I know that we can make a difference is someone’s life every day. “ Appearances Hair Color & Design Studio is located at 11961 Bradburn Blvd #600, in Westminster, just off 120th Ave. Contact them at 303-466-5277 or www.appearancessalonco.com and check out updates and photos on Facebook too!

HEALTHIER YOU TIPS FOR A

From St. Anthony North Health Campus

PAIN MANAGEMENT During Spring Activities By Dr. Bryan Wernick, MD

T

he warmer weather brings green grass, blooming flowers, and singing birds, but it can also come with added aches and pains as we enjoy the outdoors. Many of us think of gardening as a relaxing way to spend our time, but after a day of planting flowers some people will experience unwanted pains. If you follow a few simple tips, you can ease the pain that comes with the bending and awkward positions that often are associated with gardening. Before you even start gardening you should think about setting yourself up for a successful gardening experience. A 10-minute walk and stretching before starting can go a long way toward reducing your aches and pains. Once you have started gardening it is important to use correct posture and form; make sure that you lift with your legs, don’t twist your back, and kneel, don’t squat. It is also a good tip to make sure you take a break every five minutes to stand up and stretch, and don’t garden for longer than 30 minutes at a time. Another warm weather activity that can cause pain for many people is heading outdoors for a hike. Much like gardening, stretching before hiking can go a long way to reducing aches and pains. A problem area you will face while hiking is going downhill as it puts extra

strain on your body, especially your knees. To help alleviate some of the pain, it is helpful not to head straight down a hill, but to zigzag down the path. Using hiking poles can also be a helpful trick; using the poles will take stress off the back and hips. Also, remember to wear a good pair of hiking shoes that will offer support for not only your ankles but all of your joints. While it is nice to get out in the Colorado sun, it is always important to make sure to protect your body from aches and pains. No matter what activity you are doing, it is a good tip to stretch before and make sure to breathe regularly through all your activities. It is also important to make sure that you stay hydrated while enjoying the warm weather. Drinking water can reduce the pain in your joints by keeping the cartilage soft and hydrated.

Dr. Bryan Wernick, MD, is a Pain Management Specialist at St. Anthony North Health Campus, 14300 Orchard Parkway, Westminster, CO 80023. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 720-627-0000. TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

SCHOOL NEWS

BROOMFIELD GRADUATES

Reflect on Past, Look to Future Editor’s Note: Each year The Broomfielder asks one graduating student each from Broomfield High School, Holy Family School, and Legacy High School to write a reflective article about their time in high school.

Four Years Marked by Vast Experiences Abigail Richards, Broomfield High School

Throughout high school, I had a vast range of experiences, some more positive than others, all of which helped me become the person I am today. I went to Peak to Peak for my freshman year and Broomfield for the rest of my high school career. This allowed me to have a more traditional high school experience than the one offered at Peak to Peak. I was presented with numerous opportunities, including the ability to take college courses simultaneously. During the fall semester of this year, I took a Spanish conversation class and also a British Literature class at CU Boulder. They were extremely challenging, but also really exciting in that I learned so much material in such a short time period. I believe that this experience will help me immensely as I go off to college, as it allowed me to become adjusted to the workload required at a collegiate level. I was also fortunate enough to attend a

High School Freedoms Shape a Young Adult By Anya Howell, Holy Family High School

Two words that every eighth grader dreads and anticipates are high and school. I was one of those eighth graders. In our yearbooks, we were asked what we were looking forward to most in high school, and just like half of my class I replied with, “Getting more freedom.” Once I got to high school, I received those much

medical camp at Georgetown University this past summer. Although it was not connected to my high school, it will be undoubtedly be one of the fondest memories I have of high school. It really helped me solidify my career path and I also made some wonderful friends across the country that I have remained in contact with. Along with medical camp, one of the more memorable experiences I had in high school was being a member of the Broomfield Poms for 3 years. Being on the team taught me a lot about myself, who I wanted to be as an individual, and how to work as a team. We earned 2nd at the state competition two out of the three years, which really helped me learn how to value others things above winning. In the fall I will be attending NYU where I plan to double major in neuroscience and Spanish. I have dreamed of going to NYU for as long as I can remember, and I am overjoyed to finally be attending. Eventually, my goal is to enter an M.D/Ph.D. program, and from there do research into the causes of migraines and mental disorders. Although for the most part I enjoyed my high school experience, I am thrilled to move on to a new and exciting chapter in my life.

wanted freedoms. I learned how to drive, got a job, made money (and spent it too), all that fun stuff. But with those fun freedoms, came some not so fun realities. Learning how to manage my own time and not having my parents micromanage my every move was a huge freedom that I occasionally let go to my head. Instead of my parents getting on me about doing homework and studying, they would just somewhat hint at it, but they would generally leave me alone. At first I procrastinated and missed a lot of homework assignments, and then I realized that I couldn’t keep doing that. So, I picked it up, and now I like to motivate myself to get thing done, not the night before, but ahead of time.

I succeed … most of the time. What made my high school experience special was that I received so many freedoms, and now that I look back, I realize those freedoms have made me a responsible young adult. I of course will always remember all of the fun memories with my friends, how we laughed together until we cried, getting ready for dances, winning and losing volleyball and softball games, and most of all, some of the most amazing teachers I have had in my educational career thus far. From an awesome counselor

who was there for me whenever I needed him, to teachers who challenged me to go above and beyond what I was used to, and even a substitute who changed the way I looked at history and movies, Holy Family High School has given me the opportunity to grow not only in knowledge and skills, but also in friendships, faith, and self. After graduation I will be attending UNC in Greeley, where I plan to study business. I enjoy international business and languages, so I hope to tie those all together.

Four Years of Mountain Climbing

By Lexxi Reddington, Legacy High School In trying to determine the best way to represent my classmates and recognize everything we have endured and accomplished, I thought it best to share a story that illustrates our experiences over these last four years at Legacy High School. This story utilizes Legacy’s mascot, Zeus, as a symbol for my high school, my classmates, and me. Zeus’s journey speaks for our own journey. There once was a boy named Zeus who lived on Legacy Street. He was kind and hardworking, but his life was incomplete Although happy, he grew restless, and so decided one day To seek out the adventure he knew was at bay. There was a mountain nearby and with aspirations to climb, Zeus embarked on his journey for four years of time. He was prepared for the trek being clever and bold So he gathered his friends, all just 14 years old. To initiate their travels, they came to the base Of a forest known best as a harrowing place When they peered into the trees it all seemed quite daunting But they pressed on anyway to achieve their wanting. With practice they soon learned how to navigate the halls And move through the forest, despite occasional stalls. By this time, their journey was nearly half complete Yet so much remained before the retreat. He battled challenging courses and numerous tests, Fighting off sleep and distraction with growing protests. Riddled with defeat, he sat down by a tree Playing with thoughts of who he wanted to be. The possibilities were endless, but so was the confusion.

He had ideas for the future but came to no conclusion What he really needed was advice – someone to talk to. So he recalled a conversation with the wisest person he knew Grandfather had said: “You don’t need to make every decision right now, It takes time to know where you’re going and what your talents will allow.” Remembering this, Zeus stood up with determination Resolving to finish this journey in elation. Yet as he began to come closer to the top He started to notice his motivation drop. But lucky for him, the peak was in sight So he shouldered the procrastination and mustered his might To finally reach the summit: his goal all along. He was tired and weary but still managed to finish strong. Now he stood standing with clear views of the sky Feeling triumphant and preparing to say good-bye. He was going to miss this mountain and many old friends But he was excited for the future and all that it intends. Despite the many challenges and struggles in volition, As he now reflected back on this grand expedition He realized it really hadn’t been that bad It was actually one of the best adventures he had ever had.

C

urrently many residents are suggesting that City Council solicit more local restaurateurs in planning for the retail section of the expansion of the civic center. This seems to be an appropriate time to advocate a showcase of some of our current dining establishments, the upcoming “Taste It Broomfield” event at the 1STBANK Center. We have been fortunate to have several brew masters invest their time and talents in establishing some breweries within our boundaries and they will be offering samples of their artistry at Taste It on June 11. Taste It will allow potential new patrons to explore what is already available in Broomfield – our numerous restaurants as well as breweries. A strong turnout by our citizens might suggest to new proprietors that starting another local restaurant would be a good investment in our community. It must be noted that over the years, we’ve seen several local restaurant establishments come to town and unfortunately close their doors. It is imperative that as a community we try and support these local entrepreneurs that establish eateries in town. Enjoy them as they become successful, and then in turn have others follow suit, and provide more dining choices, adding to our culinary options. Please consider joining me at “Taste it Broomfield” and providing a boost to our growing list of home grown businesses. Some, I’m sure will be new to you. Also enjoy sampling foods from some of the national chain restaurants that provide the stable quality branding that has proven to be successful wherever they locate. We need all types of restaurants to be able to complement each other while providing viable dining options for any situation and circumstance. Hope to see you at Taste It on June 11.

J

ulia Child said, “People who love to eat are always the best people.” The Broomfield Chamber of Commerce and The Broomfielder magazine would like to invite you to gather together some of the best people you know for food and fun at Broomfield’s own cornucopia of food and drink – Taste It Broomfield – returning to the 1STBANK Center on June 11, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Broomfield Chamber of Commerce and The Broomfielder Magazine are proud to partner on this annual sampling of the amazing food and drink of Broomfield’s local breweries, wineries, restaurants, and caterers. Taste It Broomfield promotes Broomfield’s ever-growing food, wine, and beer culture, and gives residents a chance to try out offerings from across the community. Join the fun and for only $20 you can taste your way across the local restaurant scene. Taste It will be designed around a festive street vendor ambiance created within the 1STBANKCenter, featuring music provided by local favorite Patrick Keating (see sidebar). “We are excited to partner with The Broomfielder Magazine on this community event,” said Broomfield Chamber of Commerce president and chief executive officer Jennifer Kerr. “At only $20 per ticket, this year’s event is an extremely affordable way for those 21 years and older to have a fun night out at the 1STBANKCenter trying a variety of food, wine, and beer selections,” added Kerr. “It is also a great way for the community to experience many of the wonderful establishments in our community and make plans to visit them again.” Taste It is pleased to work with the Broomfield FISH Youth Advisory Board to support a food drive at the June 11 event. Bring a non-perishable food donation for FISH and be eligible for a chance to win prizes at the event. Also this year, after touring the sampling tables, Taste It Broomfield attendees will have a chance to vote for their favorite food and drink selections. So plan to spend an evening with neighbors and friends and for one low price, try out delicious dishes and drinks from dozens of local proprietors – its win-win for the entire community. • Vendor spaces are still available. Love the Skin You’re In! Patrick Keating

Take Charge of Your Health and Beauty with Professional Skin Care Treatments!

TO Entertain at Taste It Patrick Keating has been playing guitar for more than 25 years. About five years ago he moved to Broomfield and started playing at locations including the Exchange Tavern in Westminster and the Mercury Café in Denver. The Broomfielder asked Patrick a few questions in advance of his second appearance at Taste It Broomfield coming up on June 11. The Broomfielder: What type of music do you play? Patrick Keating: I’ve been dubbed the guy with the “Modern Americana Folk” sound. I love infusing other people’s music with my resonant acoustic sound using acoustic guitar, harmonica, and a percussive stomp box for rhythm (I made it from leftover scrap wood and plug it into my soundboard.) My music includes Backstreet Boys with a Mumford & Sons feel or Michael Jackson with some Bob Dylan strumming. Also, I try to be inventive and interesting when writing my own music, which is really difficult. The Broomfielder: What can the audience expect from you that night?

Patrick Keating: As far as what people can expect, I’m very proud of what Clyde, the sound man for the 1STBANK Center, said to me at last year’s event, “You’re at least as good as most anyone that gets on the big stage.” I work hard to have a great sound that catches your interest and a volume that doesn’t blow your face off.

Patrick Keating: Honestly, there’s nothing quite like playing in a giant place like that. I’m really thankful to the Chamber of Commerce staff for having me play. They’re so supportive. I’m looking forward to being more relaxed about the whole thing this year. I pay attention to my sound, people are liking it more and more, and there’s nothing better than when someone enjoys how I’m playing. That’s what I’m really looking forward to.

he Broomfield FISH Youth Advisory Board will be holding a food drive at the Taste It Broomfield event at the 1STBANK Center on June 11 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Taste It participants who bring a non-perishable food donation will be eligible to win prizes at the event. Broomfield FISH provides emergency assistance to those families who cannot provide for themselves, generally for up to six months. Food is distributed on a monthly basis. Many people tend to think about donating to FISH and other charitable organizations during the winter holiday season, but are less aware of neighbors in need at other times during the year. The summer months can be particularly challenging for families who depend on free or reduced-price lunches throughout the school year. For many, summer vacation does not mean “fun in the sun” but increased anxiety about where they will find consistent access to meals while school is out. The FISH Youth Advisory Board, or YAB, is comprised of area middle and high school students, who raise FISH awareness in their schools, conduct fundraising activities, and participate in selected events that FISH is conducting or attending. YAB is sponsoring this food drive to help meet the summer food pantry needs at FISH. For more information about FISH visit www. broomfieldfish.org/

The end of the school year is inherently an exciting time, so why not add a few bands, some prizes, food, singing, and dancing to the mix? Once again kids can celebrate the end of homework, research, and tests with a big party geared for teens: the 15th annual Broomstock celebration!

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2015

T

he popular free music showcase will be Friday, May 29, in the Lakeshore Room at the Broomfield Community Center from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Several local up-and-coming bands will perform on two stages with professional stage and sound equipment, giving a real concert feel to the performances. Some of the bands lined up so far include Balancing Opposites, Out of Focus, Altitude, and Skye 96. DJ Nilla Villa and other DJs will be there too. Past years’ performers include a few names popular nationally today: Drew Brown, a Broomfield native, plays guitar and keyboards for One Republic and you may have heard songs by The Fray on the radio more than just a couple times. Their hits include “You Found Me” and “How to Save a Life.” “It’s always cool to be able to say ‘I remember seeing them at Broomstock before anyone knew them’, and the kids are so supportive of the performers – they could be watching the next big thing,” says Chippy Cianci, co-chair and volunteer coordinator for Broomstock. Always looking to add new elements of entertainment, this year the event will include the “Chop Drop” fundraiser: In a somewhat unique activity, everyone can purchase golf balls for $10 each that will be dropped from a helicopter onto targets on the ground. “This a collaborative fundraiser from the Broomfield Community Foundation and A Precious Child youth advisory committees,” explains Karen Smith, Executive Director of the BCF. “Proceeds will be used to benefit youth – including the fill-a-back-pack program conducted by A Precious Child as well as for other youth projects selected by the youth advisory committees.” You can purchase golf balls at www.apreciouschild.org and www.broomfieldfoundation.org.

LET US DO THE WORK START TO FINISH! QUALITY LANDSCAPE SERVICE • COMPETITIVE RATES

“The Chop Drop is meant for everyone, not just the kids,” says Chippy. “We invite people to observe the drop – and of course hope they will purchase a few golf balls for a chance to win.” The drop will occur at the Highland Park soccer fields next to the Community Center at 1200 Highland Park Drive. Broomstock is sponsored by Broomfield Crossing Rotary, the City and County of Broomfield, and the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities. Funding is also provided by the Broomfield Community Foundation. Additional in-kind and financial support is provided by businesses such as Sill-TerHar Motors, Global Sound Studio, Infinitus PIE, and Flatiron Crossing. The event includes an art show with proceeds from the sale of items going to the expense of the event. “The target audience is really middle- and high-schoolers,” explains Chippy, whose own children first attended more than ten years ago. “There are a lot of DJs and electronica this year, which is more and more popular. It’s the kind of setting where parents can feel safe letting their kids go, its alcohol and drug-free with unobtrusive adult supervision.”

OF CARDIAC ARRESTS HAPPEN AT HOME Would You Be Ready to Help Save Someone’s Life? By Sara Farris

Each day in the United States, more than 1,000 people are going about their everyday lives when they go into sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital. Only 1 in 10 of those people survives. Delivering immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can significantly improve a victim’s chance of survival, but according to the American Heart Association only 40% of cardiac arrest victims receive CPR from a bystander. That’s because many people have never learned the basics of CPR or are afraid of potentially hurting the victim by administering CPR. But for each minute that passes without care the victim’s chance of survival decreases. North Metro Fire Rescue District offers CPR classes to the community throughout the year, so residents can provide essential lifesaving care to someone in cardiac arrest until first responders arrive. In the past, residents have had the opportunity to register and attend a Heartsaver® CPR/AED class hosted by the fire district for certification, while healthcare providers have access to BLS/ CPR certification classes.

how to help a choking victim, in layman’s terms through a shortened, interactive format. Through support from the Cindy Jarrell Education Fund, residents can attend the class for free. While participants won’t receive a CPR certification card, they will be well equipped to help if someone close to them goes into cardiac arrest. North Metro Fire wants to encourage

all of its residents, from adolescents to seniors, to learn CPR. Immediate CPR gives a victim the best chance to survive. “The benefits of learning CPR far exceed the small amount of time it takes to learn the basics. The more people who know how to perform CPR, the safer our community will be,” said North Metro Fire Chief David Ramos.

Learn the Basics of CPR Now, North Metro Fire is offering a new course, Family & Friends® CPR, for residents of all ages. The dynamic class teaches the basics of CPR, AED use, and TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

Better Living

Through Better Hearing By Dan Powers

50 Million Americans Suffer From The Ringing In The Ears Called Tinnitus. Are you one of them? Tinnitus is highly annoying and difficult to endure. In addition, more than 90% of American Tinnitus Association members with tinnitus also report some hearing loss. There is no cure for tinnitus. However, “no cure” doesn’t mean “no help”! Call us today to schedule your tinnitus evaluation appointment and learn more about how we can help you manage your tinnitus.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2015

If you have hearing loss or ringing in your ears – known as tinnitus – and you’ve been told you’ll just have to “live with it,” don’t despair. At Flatirons Audiology Dr. Julie Eschenbrenner and her staff are helping people with tinnitus and hyperacusis (sound sensitivity) and changing their lives.

“What people don’t often realize is that tinnitus is caused by hearing loss, not vice versa,” says Dr. Julie. “Tinnitus is not a disease process itself, it is a side effect of something else, often times something wrong in the auditory system. If you have hearing loss as well, you do not hear the environmental sounds as much as you hear your internal biologic noises. Hearing loss makes you more aware of tinnitus.” As a Board Certified Doctor of Audiology with more than 15 years’ experience with helping people, Dr. Julie has a deeper ability to analyze hearing issues. To evaluate tinnitus, she performs a comprehensive test far more sophisticated than traditional hearing tests; a comprehensive audiologic evaluation including speech testing as well as high frequency testing, tinnitus pitch matching, tinnitus loudness matching, loudness tolerance testing, and more. There isn’t a cure for tinnitus, but that does not mean there is no help. There are many options for tinnitus treatment and there is no one size fits all. Dr. Julie’s comprehensive evaluation as well as in-depth discussion with patients can lead to the best treatment options. As part of National Better Hearing and Speech Month, on May 4 – 8 Flatirons Audiology is hosting a “test drive” event – new technology will be available to try for free, no obligation. Just schedule a time to come in, pickup a set of the latest hearing aids and take them out for a spin for an entire week. “This way people can find out what works and see the results – we’re going to do this once a quarter,” says Dr. Julie. Helping people is truly her purpose in life: Dr. Julie was recently at the 9News HealthFair providing free testing and in October she participated in a medical mission to Belize. “We spent nine days there, did over 130 hearing tests and fit over 80 hearing aids. We fit mostly kids, with very limited resources. It was incredibly rewarding.” Check online for informative articles in her Audio Scoop newsletter including 8 Reasons Why Untreated Hearing Loss is More Dangerous Than You Think! and frequent free seminars. Find Flatirons Audiology at 300 Exempla Cir., Ste 365 in Lafayette. You can reach them at 303664-9111 and online at www.flatironsaudiology.com and LIKE them on Facebook too.

Level 3 Communications Brings Big Prize to A Precious Child in Vail’s Epic Ski Challenge A Precious Child was the lucky a beneficiary of this year’s Vail Resorts Epic Ski Challenge. Broomfield’s own Level 3 Communications chose A Precious Child as its charity of choice when selected by Vail Resorts to participate in this year’s Ski Challenge. After three months of fierce competition with nine other teams in Colorado, and 10 teams in Utah, Team Level 3 came in 1st place, and received a $100,000 donation from Vail Resorts for A Precious Child – the largest single donation A Precious Child has ever received. The Epic Ski Challenge is a multi-round competition presented by Vail Resorts to raise awareness and resources for charities serving Colorado and Utah communities, and create greater connections among civic and business leaders in both states. In its fourth year, the 2015 Epic Ski Challenge blends Vail Resorts’ growing presence in Utah with its historical roots in Colorado to make the Challenge bigger and better with a spirit of cooperation and competition. The Challenge originated in 2012, when Vail Resorts challenged Colorado business and civic leaders to ski one million vertical feet in a single day to raise $250,000 for Children’s Hospital Colorado. Much to the surprise of Vail Resorts, after a cold, powder day in March, the Vail Ski Challenge participants surpassed that mark, skiing more than 1 million vertical feet in a single day. This year’s Challenge began on January 15 and ended on April 8. Congratulations to Team Level 3 and A Precious Child!
