FROM THE
Youth and the
Media Today
PUBLISHER Mike Garrison
EDITOR Tina Eichner
ART DIRECTOR/GRAPHIC DESIGN
Every year in the May issue, we invite one graduating student from Broomfield’s three high schools to write a Senior Reflection for the magazine. The participating students are selected by each school’s administration. This is my favorite feature of the year.
As
I sent out the requests for participation this year, I was particularly struck by the importance of extending such a seemingly simple opportunity in today’s sound bite, “socially”-focused, fake news world. Thanks to the Internet, the power of the pen is universal, and our burgeoning information resources are more difficult to navigate each day. Through Twitter and Facebook and countless other platforms, anyone can participate in a global conversation at any time. And even though it is clearly to the contrary, many people exhibit reckless behaviors on these platforms, without much thought to the repercussions, thinking their communications will just fade away. Our own President has frequently been reminded how untrue this is as an agitated media seeks daily to dig up his Tweets of yesterday and highlight contradictions. But my point is not about politics. It is about guiding our children to become the discriminating and responsible communicators that we are going to need – that the world will need – in the decades ahead. There are many reasons I love being involved with a print publication in 2017. One is that I think there is a dignified permanence to print. There are still rules here. Information should be correct. Sentences should be complete. Headlines should be capitalized. The page should have a purpose. I think it is critically important that we share these ideals with our youth – that the what, when, how, and where we communicate matters. Analytical and accurate voices are needed so very desperately, as the media machine generates more and more content and less and less of it is reliable. Journalism must be defended like an animal facing extinction! Here and there I hope we can plant some seeds. Thank you Mary, Liza, and Christian for submitting your articles and sharing your pre-graduation thoughts. We wish you and all of the 2017 graduates the best of luck in the future.
Thanks for reading,
Tina Eichner 6

Attend a lecture about Recognizing and Treating Heart Failure at 7:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium. Nearly 6 million Americans suffer from heart failure, a serious condition where the heart can’t pump enough blood to the rest of the body. Many are unaware they have this potentially fatal condition because some of the most common symptoms — such as shortness of breath and fatigue — are often mistaken for normal signs of aging. Dr. Scott Blois, who leads the first and only heart failure clinic in Boulder County, will describe the signs of heart failure and provide an update on the latest treatment options. This event is free. Visit www. bchlectures.org/HF for more information.

A BOUTIQUE ROOFING COMPANY CIG Construction is a boutique roofing company where the principals have a profound commitment to personalized service and make time for every client. "Our clients appreciate that we are a phone call away and their concerns are addressed immediately," Janice says. OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND According to Kelly, "Homeowners don't realize the importance of roof maintenance. We get calls from homeowners once they have a roof leak. Most of the time these leaks can be prevented with affordable routine maintenance."
PHOTO: BLUEPRINT SOCIETY
OVER YOUR HEAD CIG CONSTRUCTION FOUNDERS, Kelly Stitzer (left) and Janice Stitzer (right), recently moved into their new offices in Westminster. Hints of their trade specialty are sprinkled throughout, from an asphalt-shingled birdhouse to roofing materials re-purposed as wall art. The husband-and-wife team began their professional partnership renovating and remodeling homes and multiunit properties. A concentration in roofing was a natural transition. As a thirdgeneration general contractor, Kelly grew up on commercial job sites which has provided him with keen knowledge in the broad scope of ground-up construction. Janice with a background in real estate and finance, rounds out this husband-and-wife team and their collaborative execution in providing the best client experience.
WHAT THE HAIL Hail storms are a common weather event for the Front Range. When a home is affected by a hail storm, roof replacement may be covered by homeowners insurance. "Before calling in a claim, make sure you have verifiable damage. We can assist homeowners in documenting that damage. Adjusters may not know local codes and we make sure repair items are not missed in their report," Kelly explains. #ROOFITRIGHT For this boutique roofing company, staying intimately involved in every project is routine. "When it comes to a storm damage insurance claim, the process can be daunting. We walk our clients through the process from reviewing their insurance paperwork to the completion of repairs," says Janice, "we want to provide value to our clients in the form of quality workmanship and personalized service."
CIG Construction provides roofing services for greater Denver and beyond. Specializing in roof repair, maintenance, installation and replacement.

Your Stroke Knowledge

Can Save A Life By Richard Smith, MD
May is National Stroke Awareness month. As a neurologist and Stroke Program Medical Director, here are key facts I would like every Coloradan to know: DenversBestPainters.com S P R I N G S AV I N G S !
• Strokes can happen to anyone at any age. A stroke involves sudden onset of neurologic problems, and certain symptoms are common. These include weakness, numbness, difficulty talking, clumsiness, balance problems, blurred or double vision, or vertigo. About 85% of strokes are caused by a lack of blood flow to part of the brain; 15% are due to bleeding into or around the brain.

• Several factors increase the risk of having a stroke. Some of these — such as age, gender, and ethnic background – cannot be changed. Other risk factors can be modified, and your stroke risk can be lowered by addressing them:

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is the most important risk factor for having a stroke. Hypertension increases with age, and more than two thirds of people over age 65 have high blood pressure. If yours is consistently above 120/80, ask your doctor about treating it.
-
Diabetes more than doubles the risk of having a stroke, and the risk is further increased if high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol is also present. Working to achieve good control of your blood sugars can significantly reduce the risk of stroke.
-
People who smoke are nearly twice as likely to have a stroke, as well as other health problems such as heart disease, emphysema, and lung cancer. If you smoke, talk with your doctor or call the Colorado QuitLine at 800-784-8669.
-
Atrial fibrillation can increase one’s risk of having a stroke by four to five times. This is a condition where the small upper chambers of the heart beat irregularly and do not fully empty when they contract, which can lead to development of clots that can travel to the brain. If you have palpitations or an irregular heartbeat, definitely see your doctor.
-
Elevated cholesterol levels are associated with an increased risk of a heart attack, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease (blocked arteries in the legs). Taking a medication to lower the total cholesterol and LDL (bad cholesterol) levels may be indicated.
-
Being overweight or obese clearly increases the risk of stroke and is related, in part, to the higher rate of diabetes and hypertension. Physical activity and a healthy diet can lower this risk.
-
Having a TIA (transient ischemic attack) – often referred to as a mini-stroke, as symptoms resolve within 24 hours – raises overall stroke risk. In some cases, the stroke can occur very soon after a TIA. So even if the symptoms do not last, it is important that a person seek medical attention.

REFLECTS
ON UNIQUE EXP E R I E N C E S
Music, Magic, and Superheroes By Mary Marcontell Broomfield High School Movies have lied to us. High school, as it turns out, does not have spontaneous musical stand-offs during lunch, and none of my classmates were bitten by radioactive spiders and saved the world. While that was somewhat of a disappointment, I now realize that BHS has given us a piece of these idealistic things and more – and in a way that is uniquely our own, if we just pay attention. If you’re looking for music, the halls of Broomfield High will sing for you harmoniously from any of our six amazing choirs all the way down to the auditorium where spectacular musicals are presented by emerging actors. The showstopping background music to our lives is played out by our orchestra, band, and winter percussion, which are as emotional as they are impressive. If you follow the sound of hundreds of voices raised in song, it may take you to the real life superhumans of our school. The stands shake under the weight of the students who are singing the chants that they want the stars above to hear, and the athletes perform with skills that could only be achieved through hours upon hours of practice. The physical ability of our student athletes is extraordinary, so it’s no surprise that many in our senior class are going to continue to play in college. If you want a little magic, BHS shocks us all with a complete transformation of our school to the point where it’s unrecognizable during JAM. We experience magic that night, as we eat, play games, and win prizes in a fantastic environment that makes the night truly special.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2017
Our combined high school experiences exceed any fictional movie script. There is simply no movie that could capture the true adventure of Broomfield. As the senior class approaches our final days attending Broomfield High, it’s important to note that this energy that has accumulated over our four years here doesn’t just suddenly stop, it will grow. We will take all of our memories and experiences into the world, and use them to spread our wings, whether it’s for academics, athletics, for the arts or a combination of all areas. I am grateful to be a graduate of a school that gave me music, magic, and a little bit of superhero. After we graduate, I know that this senior class is going to make a distinctive and wonderful mark on the world. Mary will be attending the University of Denver in the fall. The Broomfield High School Class of 2017 will graduate on Saturday, May 20 at 9:00 a.m. at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield.
How to Keep High School from Eating Our Souls: 6+ Tips By Elizabeth “Liza” Hafner Legacy High School Now, I know the title appears intimidating, but please hang with me. We typically view high school as a time of gaining independence, setting and attaining goals, and planning our futures. Undoubtedly, high school should comprise these experiences, but sometimes they fill our vision until they’re all we see. Sometimes, in aiming to make the grade, or aspiring for inclusion in a group, or earning first chair in band, or juggling part-time jobs, or perfecting an artistic masterpiece, or achieving varsity status, we lose a wider, multi-dimensional view of ourselves. This tunnel vision leaves us susceptible to high school “eating our souls.” I felt that nibbling at times over four years, but I used these tips as safeguards: 1.
Settle in. Find “your people” by reaching out to someone just because he/she/they are interesting (including peers outside of school). The more diverse the people the better – hobbies, worldviews, family circumstances, race/ethnicity. Use group messaging to help with “herding cats;” an amazingly supportive and slightly quirky family just might emerge.
2. Come together. In times of tragedy and triumph, be present in the school-community. It’ll reveal that, unified, school is #legacystrong and greater than the sum of its parts. 3. Don’t point-chase. It’s not worth it. Focusing on percentages and grade-point average often distracts from learning; prioritizing understanding over grades can yield richer results. 4. Seek help. It’s okay not to be great at everything the first (or last) time around. It’s rewarding to persevere and realize growth, whether emotional, social, physical, or academic. It’s also a way to bond with peers and mentors. 5. Dive deeper. Know that itching curiosity that buzzes around before it’s swept aside? Don’t let it fly away. Grab it and learn something new. Ask a bold question, dig for trivial facts, research something interesting even when “unassigned.” 6. Take a break. Unplug, bake, work out, read, crochet, hike, play cards, daydream, make music, draw, dance. When stress engulfs us, we have to step back from the source. + ______________. I can’t speak for all seniors about how to ward off the soul-sucking tunnel vision; we’re all different, so everyone must fill in their own blank. For me, the previous tips have ensured that the memories of laughter, learning, and friendship will stay long after I’ve forgotten how to find the area of a bifolium or distinguish iambs and trochees. Elizabeth will be attending Stanford University in the fall. The Legacy High School Class of 2017 will graduate on May 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the University of Colorado Boulder, Coors Event Center.

What You Do, and Who You Do it With, Will Shape Your Experience By Christian Flannery Holy Family High School The sharpest swords are forged in the hottest fire. As violent as this statement may seem, to me it summarizes a successful high school experience. High school taught me that you only get out of it what you put in. “High school” becomes definitive of every aspect of those four years of your life; it means the physical building, the eight-hour long days, and the homework, but also the friendships you build and the memories that shape you outside of the academics and extracurriculars. People look back on these years not as “2016” or “when I was 17”, but as “my junior year”. With the pivotal role high school plays in forming the character in tomorrow’s adults, tomorrow’s students need to know what’s in store for them. High school is going to make you change. It might seem obvious, and if not, it might be intimidating to think about what that means, but the change is completely up to you. Freshman year, everyone starts out on basically the same level. Everyone is mostly new and might come from different places, but you all take a lot of the same classes and all adjust to this new part of your life. You meet people you wouldn’t have before because you’re trying to find your place or they are and they just find you. As high school goes on, some people stay with you while others fade and find new people to hang out with. This is where the change comes in. As you grow, you find the things that you really like to do and the people who enjoy those things too. Some people are there from freshman orientation to graduation

day, and some you completely forget about until you hear that they’re finally driving or getting their first tattoo or something. You look back on the times that you knew those people, and find that both you and they are way different than either were before. It’s not a bad thing, it just happens. What this says is that high school is defined by what you do and who you choose to do it with. This is where you become who you’ll be for the rest of your life. Shape yourself into the best you can be from the very first day, and surround yourself with people who will help get you there. If you do it right, you’ll find yourself feeling confident about who you are, what you’re doing, and where you’re going. After graduating, Christian is planning to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona with an Air Force ROTC scholarship. The Holy Family High School Class of 2017 will graduate on May 25, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family High School.

You may begin drawing on your traditional Individual Retirement Account without penalty once you reach age 59-1/2. You must begin taking withdrawals from your traditional IRA by April 15 of the year following the year in which you turn 70-1/2. Remember that the tax on an IRA account is only due if you draw the money out of the account. When you die there is no requirement that your IRA be withdrawn. On death, if your spouse is the beneficiary, your spouse can rollover the IRA account into their own IRA account, or into a new IRA account of their own. If someone other than your spouse is the beneficiary, different rules apply. In the proper circumstances, the beneficiary can continue the income tax deferral of your IRA over the balance of their life expectancy. This is not an IRA rollover. It is still your IRA, but "for the benefit of" your beneficiary. The beneficiary will be required to take Required Minimum Distributions based on their life expectancy even if they are under 70-1/2. The beneficiary can withdraw more if they choose to. Unfortunately, the United States Supreme Court has confirmed that a "beneficial IRA" does not have the same protections from creditors as a traditional IRA account. As a result, if your beneficiary suffers a catastrophic illness or has a creditor issue, the "beneficial IRA" may be attacked by their creditors or disqualify them from government benefits. Therefore, you should consider forming a protective trust to hold the IRA accounts for your beneficiaries on your death. How you name your beneficiaries on your IRA accounts and how they interact with your estate plan is critical to maximizing the continued income tax deferral of your IRA accounts, and ensuring that the IRA is protected if a beneficiary suffers a catastrophic illness or has creditor problems.

BROOMFIELD PRESCHOOLS
IN STATE RANKINGS By Kristen Beckman
Choosing a preschool can be a daunting task, but Broomfield parents are in luck. Nearly threequarters of Broomfield’s 47 licensed childcare programs are rated 2 or higher on the Colorado Shines Quality Rating & Improvement System, which rates early childhood education programs to help parents make informed decisions about which program is best for their child. Of the licensed childcare programs in Broomfield, about half offer preschool programs, said Jessica Jones, director of the Broomfield Early Childhood Council.
26
THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2017
T
he Colorado Shines program assesses preschool programs in five areas, including workforce qualifications and professional development; family partnerships; leadership, management, and administration; learning environment; and child health promotion. Licensed providers earn a point for each area in which they meet a rigorous set of standards. The rating program is free for licensed early childhood care and education providers, and scores create a foundation for providers to improve their quality of service.
“Broomfield is one of the highest rated counties in the state,” said Jones. The ratings can help parents learn more about local preschool programs and narrow their selection to a few they would like to visit before making a final choice. Jones said parents should ask about teacher-to-student ratios, curriculum, and ancillary programs. Broomfield offers a variety of preschool programs from different providers, including municipal programs like the Paul Derda Recreation Center Early Learning Program and programs offered at local public schools. Here are some of Broomfield’s preschool programs:
Apple Tree Christian Preschool & Kindergarten Part of the Broomfield United Methodist Church, Apple Tree Christian Preschool is a nonprofit organization that provides programs for ages 2.5 through kindergarten. The school strives to instill Christian values, develop positive social skills, and encourage academic success. “We are a Colorado Shines level 5 rated program, the highest rating for child care programs,” said Jeannine Bosseler, director of the school.
Bal Swan Children’s Center Bal Swan Children's Center, founded in 1963, was Broomfield's first center to earn a Colorado Shines Level 5 rating. Bal Swan provides a high quality early childhood education for children of all abilities. It is grounded in the social emotional development of children in an inclusive and welcoming environment. With highly trained teachers, a full team of therapists, and a warm water therapy pool, Bal Swan supports the learning needs of all children.
Bright Horizons Family Solutions Recently selected by the Denver Post as one of the top places to work in Colorado, Bright Horizons Family Solutions uses an emergent curriculum focused on projects, play, and childled interests. “Bright Horizons preschools are designed to help children develop the foundation they need to build self-esteem, to develop thinking and problem-solving skills, to be contributing members of communities,” said Linda Bartleson, division vice president for the school.
Broomfield Academy Broomfield Academy is an academic preschool for children at least 3 years old that provides full-day sessions five days a week. In addition to its standard curriculum, the school engages students in weekly music, Spanish, physical education, art, and swimming classes guided by specialized teachers. Preschool classes also pair with upper grades for annual field day, science fair, and triathlon events. Enrollment is ongoing.
Children’s Garden Learning Center Children’s Garden Learning Center is open to children aged 3 to 5 years and offers a year-round program with two-, three-, four-, and five-day options. In addition to its core curriculum, the school also offers off-campus activities, such as weekly gymnastics classes and at least one field trip per month.
Gateway Academy Gateway Academy, which has been educating Broomfield preschoolers for more than 15 years, offers full-time and part-time preschool programs year-round. The program is open to children who are at least 6 months old. “Our promise to our families is that we provide parents with peace of mind by giving children an exceptional education every fun-filled day,” said Carolyn Fernandez, the school’s director.
Kohl Street Kids Kohl Street Kids offers both preschool and after-school care starting each school year in August. Children aged 2.5 years and older can attend preschool classes divided by age, with a teacherstudent ratio of 1-to-6 for its youngest pupils and 1-to-10 for its pre-kindergarten students. The classes progress from play-based education to motor skills development to beginning handwriting to literacy fundamentals and social skills development.
Rainbow Tree Preschool Rainbow Tree Preschool is a nine-month program that runs from September through May with flexible hours to allow parents to customize a schedule that works best for their family. The school accepts children aged 2.5 to 6 years old, and offers a beginning Spanish class.
The Children’s Center A nonprofit, private preschool for children aged 3 to 5 years old, The Children’s Center specializes in play-based academic curriculum that accommodates all abilities and skill levels. The center has been in Broomfield for 14 years and is currently enrolling students for the 2017-18 programs. To view The Broomfielder™ online visit: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

One of the newest additions to the Broomfield fitness scene is Chuze Fitness which will be opening this summer at 120th and Sheridan. Chuze’s philosophy is that fitness should be affordable for everyone. As stated on the company website, “We set out to reinvent fitness clubs because we believe you’ve been underserved and overcharged. Because everybody deserves an awesome gym.” Chuze is unique in that it offers different types of memberships based on interests. If you just want to use cardio and weight equipment, you pay a lower cost than if you want classes and daycare. This is ideal for people who like the larger gyms but do not want to pay for amenities they don’t need. Though CrossFit has been around for many years, it is a still very popular. Broomfield is home to many CrossFit gyms including CrossFit Profectus, CrossFit MBS, and Widespread CrossFit. CrossFit is an all encompassing fitness program that includes strength, speed, coordination, flexibility, balance, power, and cardiovascular endurance. Graem Haarbye, owner and head coach at CrossFit Profectus, stated that CrossFit is unique “due to the intimate relationships and comaradie that is built for all fitness levels.” His location includes small intimate classes for one-on-one coaching

Orangetheory is another very popular workout and Broomfield has a location off 1st Avenue. Orangetheory offers a heart rate based interval workout. Renee Johnson, one of the owners explained that “Every class is designed to get you in the EPOC state. EPOC stands for Excess Post Oxygen Consumption, informally called after burn. Members wear a heart rate monitor during class. You receive a readout sent to your email about your workout, how many calories you burn, and where your heart rate was during the class. The classes are always fun and challenging and for every fitness level as you can workout to your abilities in a class setting.” Renee states that their goal is “to create an environment that is comfortable and supportive to help everyone reach their fitness goals.”
If you are looking for another type of specialized workout, check out Off the Wall Fitness on Industrial Lane. Off the Wall offers small group, high-intensity bootcamps. Randy Laracca opened the location after losing a large amount of weight and wanted to dedicate his life to helping others change theirs. Randy stated, “I am so excited to bring this HIIT training to our community! You CAN change the way you feel. You CAN change the way you look. You CAN get your confidence back! A better life starts with taking care of yourself and prioritizing your health. You will get results when you work with us. I can’t wait for you to experience what you are truly capable of doing!” CorePower Yoga’s mission is “share our authentic passion for yoga and healthy living to inspire everyone to live their most extraordinary life.” The Broomfield location off 144th Avenue, offers a variety of yoga styles for beginners and more advanced yoga students. Courtney Sutherland, the North Denver Area Manager said, “CorePower Yoga North Denver has the most amazing community of yogis. We have something for everyone and pride ourselves on the most amazing teachers who are determined to meet every student where they are on any given day.”
Martial Arts is another great form of exercise and Broomfield has its own Krav Maga training center. Krav Maga is known as the best all around self-defense system and defensive tactics system in the world and is designed specifically to get people to a high level of proficiency in a short amount of time. The Colorado Krav Maga training center on 120th Avenue offers self-defense classes, Cross-Kick and fitness classes, Law Enforcement Training, and even Krav Maga for kids! If you are looking for something specifically for children, both Flatiron Gymnastics and the Paul Derda Rec Center have multiple options. THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2017
MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR JUNE 15 –
TASTE IT BROOMFIELD IS BACK!
P
lan to join hundreds of hungry fellow Broomfielders on June 15 at the 1ST BANK Center for Broomfield’s annual celebration of local food and drink presented by The Broomfield Chamber of Commerce and The Broomfielder™ Magazine. Taste It is designed to promote Broomfield’s evergrowing food, wine, and beer culture in a fun and entertaining community event. “Each year we welcome more new food and beverage establishments to the area. This year I am excited to finalize a line-up of vendors that are both longtime community favorites and brand new to the event,” said Jennifer Kerr. “Tickets have been selling since March and we do expect the event to sell out again this year.” Taste It is designed around a festive street vendor ambiance created within the 1ST BANK Center featuring live music provided by local favorite Patrick Keating with selections in Modern Americana Folk music. After checking in at the Registration Table, all attendees will receive a tasting glass and “Passport” for the event to note the different food and beverages enjoyed. Attendees who visit all of the booths and bring the Passport to the Broomfield Chamber table will be entered into a drawing for tickets to a show at the 1ST BANK Center. All guests will also receive a voting slip to vote for favorite food and beverage. Will last year’s winners be able to defend their titles? “Winning the People’s Choice award for best tasting food at ‘Taste It’ was tremendous,” said Christina Jensen, Food and Beverage Manager of Tiller’s Kitchen & Bar, which is a two-time winner. “We always love having the opportunity to showcase our talented culinary team to the local community.” People’s Choice for best tasting beverage went to Big Choice Brewing. “We are really excited that the people of Broomfield enjoyed our beer; we enjoyed being there to talk about it. Over the past 4 years we have enjoyed being a part of this awesome community and look forward to many more!” said Andrea Miller Owner/Events & Community, Big Choice Brewing.
FISH Youth Advisory Board Holding Food Drive at Taste It The Broomfield FISH Youth Advisory Board will be holding a food drive at Taste It Broomfield and ask all attendees to support the effort! Broomfield FISH provides emergency assistance, including food, to families in need. Food is distributed on a monthly basis. Many people tend to think about donating to FISH and other charitable organizations during the winter holiday season, but are less aware of neighbors in need at other times during the year. The summer months can be particularly challenging for families who depend on free or reduced-price lunches throughout the school year. The FISH Youth Advisory Board, or YAB, is comprised of area middle and high school students, who raise FISH awareness in their schools, conduct fundraising activities, and participate in selected events that FISH is conducting or attending. YAB is sponsoring this food drive to help meet the summer food pantry needs at FISH so don’t forget your donation!
Last year this event sold out, so be sure to register early so you don’t miss out! Tickets can be purchased in advance only online at www.broomfieldchamber.com. This is a 21 and older only event.

Sweetest the
Mother’s Day Brunch By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham
Searching for inspiration for this year’s Mother’s Day brunch menu? Traditional breakfast items like pancakes, waffles, and French toast often get a bad rap, but they can definitely be made healthier. Try using whole-grain flours and breads – or gluten-free flour blends, if desired – and skip the fake “maple syrups” which are just colored corn syrup. Instead, serve with fresh fruit sweetened with a little honey and mint and a dusting of powdered sugar. Place finished pancakes or waffles on a rack set on a baking sheet in a warm oven so they stay hot and crisp and don’t get soggy.
Marion Cunningham’s Famous Overnight Yeasted Waffles
French Toast with Caramelized Bananas (Adapted from Williams-Sonoma)
• • • • • •
6 eggs 1 cup whole milk 1 tbsp. granulated sugar 6 slices day-old whole-grain or other thick bread 1 tsp. vanilla Finely grated zest of 1 large orange
• • • • • •
1/8 tsp. nutmeg Canola oil for cooking 3 firm but ripe bananas 2 tbsp. butter 3 tbsp. light brown sugar 1/2 cup orange juice, plus more as needed
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large, shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla, zest, and nutmeg. Cut bread slices in half, add to egg mixture and turn gently to coat evenly. Let stand until bread has soaked up some of egg mixture, about 1 minute. 2. Place a griddle over medium-high heat until hot, and oil lightly. Remove bread from egg mixture, drain, and place on hot griddle. Cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Flip and cook other side until golden brown, about 2 minutes more. Place bread on a rimmed baking sheet, transfer to oven and bake until center is heated through but still moist, about 10 minutes. 3. Peel bananas and slice diagonally. In a large fry pan over medium-high heat, melt butter. Add banana slices and cook gently until browned, 2 to 3 minutes. Sprinkle in brown sugar and cook about 1 minute. Gently stir in 1/2 cup orange juice and cook until liquid has reduced slightly, about 1 minute. If sauce seems too thick, add a little more orange juice. Serve French toast piping hot, topped with spoonfuls of caramelized bananas.

Add milk, butter, salt, sugar, and flour to yeast and beat until smooth and blended. Cover bowl with plastic and let stand overnight at room temperature. 2. Just before cooking waffles, beat in eggs and baking soda and stir until well mixed. The batter will be very thin. Cook on a very hot waffle iron, adding about 1/3 cup batter per grid; bake until waffles are golden and crisp to the touch. Keep waffles warm in oven until ready to serve.

New Museum Exhibit
Brings Local Veterans’ Stories to Life By Kristen Beckman
The Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum has been hard at work upgrading its exhibits and increasing its interaction with the community through visitors it brings in and programs it takes out to local schools and organizations, said Ed Miccio, board member and director of marketing and public relations for the museum.
L
ast year, the museum held 38 outreach events, engaging more than 3,100 people, and more than 2,200 visitors toured the museum. Those numbers far exceed engagement figures from previous years, Miccio said. Among its efforts to engage the community, the museum continues to offer its Coffee & Conversation series twice per month with presentations about a military conflict, branch or event. The museum also recently added a virtual tour to its website, Miccio said. One of the museum’s newest exhibits is its Forefather Veterans display, which opened in March. Lew Roman, head of the museum’s display and exhibit committee, came up with the idea for the rotating display as a way to provide something new for visitors to see each time they visit. The exhibit features artifacts and historical accounts of deceased veterans from Broomfield or surrounding areas and is scheduled to change every two months. Steward Adams Whiteman, a Baker Second Class in the U.S. Navy, is the first veteran featured in the Forefather Veterans exhibit. Whiteman, who was Roman’s grandfather, left behind a diary with accounts of his time aboard the destroyer tender U.S.S. Buffalo, which provided repair and supply services to other ships. Whiteman spent long shifts over a two-year tour of duty aboard the ship during World War I baking bread that was then supplied to other crews.
UPCOMING EVENTS: The museum will host its annual Memorial Day picnic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, May 29, at the Broomfield Commons. The event will feature music, uniformed re-enactors, and military equipment and vehicle displays, as well as food for sale by the Broomfield Lion’s Club. Visit www.broomfieldveterans.com for more information and updates. The museum used Whiteman’s diary to create a visual account of his experiences with artifacts like dishes he might have used as a baker, a model of the ship he served on, and a map that plots the course his ship took. The display also includes portholes with his writings on the outside and corresponding pictures of what he witnessed inside, such as the first transatlantic flight, which he observed while stationed in the Azores, and the celebration of the end of the war, which Whiteman wrote about while stationed in Gibraltar.
36
THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2017
The display is scheduled to change in May to feature a Brighton soldier who witnessed the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp during World War II. The museum is asking residents who would like to apply to have a deceased U.S. veteran in their family featured in the display to fill out an application and provide information on the artifacts they can loan or donate to the museum. The display will continue to rotate as long as the museum has new veterans to feature, Roman said.

Broomfield and

Great War By Jacqui Ainlay-Conley – City and County of Broomfield Museum Manager
The Great War, which became known as World War I, began in Europe in 1914. April 6, 2017, marked the centennial of America’s entry when the United States Congress declared war upon the German Empire and joined Russia, Great Britain, France, and their allies. By the time the war ended in 1918, more than 4 million Americans had served in uniform and of those, 116,516 gave their lives and 200,000 were wounded.
Broomfielders During the War Approximately 24 million men between the ages of 18 and 45 who were living in the United States in 1917 and 1918 completed a World War I draft registration card. A search of Ancestry.com showed that 121 men from Broomfield who lived in Broomfield’s legacy counties of Adams, Jefferson, and Weld registered. At least three young men from Jefferson County, all farm laborers, who listed their mailing address as Broomfield were drafted: Oliver R. Williams, 23; John Bueb, 24; and Harry Goodstein, 21. Oliver Williams listed his employer as John “Frank” Church, of the Church Ranch family. The three survived,
38

however, according to a record compiled by the Office of War Records of the American Jewish Committee, Harry Goodstein, a Private in the U.S. Army was gassed in one of the last major Allied offenses of the war, the Battle of Argonne (France). Goodstein reported slight burns and “hard pains to his eye and throat.” Sadly, U.S. Army Private Clinton Barnett of Broomfield, Boulder County, is listed in volume one of Soldiers in the Great War as having died of disease. Residents across America, including those living in Broomfield, mobilized for the war effort. Frank Church served on a committee of the Jefferson County chapter of the American Red Cross that accepted donations of calves. Cattle owners would agree to donate heifer calves to the Red Cross, the calves would then be branded A R C, and the donor would care for them until the local chapter shipped them to the Denver Western Stock Show in January where they were sold to raise money for the organization. Like many women, Louise Mitze volunteered with the Red Cross. She was also the Broomfield chairwoman of the Jefferson County Women’s Committee of the Council of National Defense and a supporter of their Women’s Food Administration, an organization that encouraged domestic food conservation so that the U.S. could feed their troops and the troops and populations of Allied countries.
C.A. Arnold, a thirty-six year old miner living in Broomfield who had served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines, applied and was selected to be a constabulary in the state’s newly created Department of Safety. After training in Golden, Arnold was given a uniform, armed with an automatic revolver and a Winchester Rifle, and charged by the Department with protecting the public, infrastructure, and crops from “German plotters.”
Two Veterans After the War After the war, at least two young veterans moved to Broomfield. Roy Rees grew up on the western plains of Kansas. After returning from the battlefields of Europe in 1919 he married Waineta “Neta” Miller from his home county of Decatur. Roy and Neta moved to Longmont where other family members had migrated and they lived with his younger brother and widowed mother. Rees initially found employment as a laborer with Great Western Sugar, but by 1921 was listed as the owner of the Hogsett Lumber and Mercantile Company in Broomfield. Tragedy struck on August 5, 1921, when Edward Abbott was overcome by gas while digging a well on Adolph Zang’s ranch. A coworker attempted to reach him but could not make it to the bottom. According to an article in the Lafayette Leader Rees, “ … an overseas soldier, procured his gas mask and after adjusting it made the descent into the hole to bring Abbott out. He succeeded in placing a rope around Abbott’s body and the latter was pulled to the top. But before Rees could be brought out his mask became disarranged in such a manner that it was ineffective and he too was overcome.” Despite being rushed to a hospital in Denver, Rees never regained consciousness and died the following the day. The Longmont Ledger reported in an article titled “Gave His Life for Another” that a large number of relatives from Kansas and friends from Broomfield travelled to Longmont for his funeral, which was conducted by the pastor of the Methodist Church in Broomfield with the assistance of a pastor from the Christian Church of Longmont. Joseph Huddart was born in Weldona, Colorado. He served as a musician in the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe and was discharged on March 22, 1919. After marrying his wife Lillian, the two moved to the Broomfield area in 1921. In 1924 he purchased the Miller-Rees Lumber Company from Mostyn
Miller and Roy’s widow Neta Rees and changed the name to the Broomfield Lumber Company. Huddart’s friend Glen Mosher became a co-investor, and the company stayed with Huddart until he sold it in the 1980s. Over the years Huddart prospered and accumulated property. During difficult economic times, he often extended credit to farmers and ranchers in the area. When he passed away in 1988, at the age of 92, Huddart left $3 million in trusts to organizations that still benefit the community including the Bal Swan Children’s Center and the Broomfield Methodist Church. He belonged to the Broomfield VFW Post and the Crescent Grange. In 1996 he was posthumously inducted into the Boulder County Business Hall of Fame. According to long-time Broomfield resident Beverly Hanson, who was a child in the 1930s, “Mr. Huddart gave out whole Hershey chocolate bars at Halloween.”

Depot Museum Friends Announce
2017 History Comes Alive! Speaker Series For the fourth consecutive year, the Broomfield Depot Museum Friends continues its partnership with the Crescent Grange in Broomfield in a dynamic speaker series, this year scheduled on the second Wednesday of each month starting May 10.
T
he 2017 ‘Local History Comes Alive!’ series kicks off with a program by Dr. Todd Laugen, of Denver’s Metropolitan State University. With 2017 marking the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I, Dr. Laugen will present, “The Draft, Coal, and Americanism: World War I in Colorado.” This informative overview of Colorado’s experience during World War I will cover war mobilization across the state, anti-German and anti-draft sentiment, struggles over civil liberties – especially free speech during wartime, and Colorado soldiers’ perspectives. He wrote The Gospel of Progressivism: Moral Reform and Labor War in Colorado, 1900-1930 (University Press of Colorado, 2010). Next in the series on June 14 is “Hot Water: Radium and Recreation in Early El Dorado Springs,” by Adam Evearitt. El Dorado Springs, between Broomfield and Boulder is now a popular hiking launch point, but it was once a popular get-away for area residents who wanted to enjoy time away from the city at the hotel and swim in the renowned hot springs there. Evearitt is a radiological physicist and owner of Atom Physics, a Broomfield company that inspects x-ray machines for the State of Colorado. On July 12, come hear “From Potlucks to Politics: Farmers and the Granger Movement in Broomfield,” presented by Tom Simmons, architectural historian for Front Range Research Associates, and Jacqui Ainlay-Conley, Broomfield’s own Depot Museum Administrator. Tom is a member of the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH), Western History Association (WHA), and Society for Commercial Archaeology (SCA), the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Colorado Historical Society, Colorado Preservation, Inc., and Historic Denver, Inc. The ever-popular Dr. Tom Noel, aka “Dr. Colorado,” returns on Aug. 9 to present “Colorado: A Tour of the Highest State.” For this presentation only, the venue moves to the Broomfield Auditorium, 3 Community Park Rd., and a donation of $10 is suggested. Dr. Noel is a Professor of History and the Director of Public History, Preservation and Colorado Studies at University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver). He is the author of numerous books, articles and columns. On Sept. 13, learn about “Lakota Performers in Europe: Their Culture and the Artifacts They Left Behind,” by Steve Friesen, of the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave, where he has, for 21 years, been director of the popular Lookout Mountain site that overlooks Golden. His book of the same name will be released in June by the University of Oklahoma Press. Friesen has authored numerous articles and books including “Buffalo Bill: Scout, Showman, Visionary.” On Oct. 11, Silvia Pettem will present “Someone’s Daughter: In Search of Justice

for Jane Doe,” the story of her sleuthing efforts to find the identity of a young woman mysteriously found dead in 1954. According to Clay Evans, writing in the Daily Camera about her book of the same name, “Pettem’s cold-case examination of her long efforts to identify Jane Doe, entertainingly chronicles how this young woman became ‘unforgotten.’ Where the author mostly wanted Jane Doe’s family to know her fate, police wanted to find her killer, and the book follows both efforts in fascinating detail.” For further information about the Broomfield Depot Museum, call 303460-6824 or visit the museum’s website at broomfielddepotmuseum.org. 9 TIPS To Keep Your Child Safe Around Water This Summer

ew things are as much fun as splashing around at the beach or in a backyard pool, but not every child is confident about taking the plunge. “For some children, the idea of getting in the water and trying to swim can be a bit frightening,” says K.J. Hales, author of It’s Hard to Swim, the second and most recent addition to the Life’s Little Lessons by Ellie the Wienerdog educational picture book series (www.ellietheweinerdog.com). “But with the proper positive reinforcement, they can overcome their fears and discover just how much fun swimming can be.” May is National Water Safety Month, a good time for parents to consider teaching their children how to swim. The American Academy of Pediatrics supports swimming lessons for most children 4 years and older. Water safety classes can also reduce the risk of drowning in younger children, the pediatrics group reports, but advises that because children develop at different rates, not all will be ready to swim at the same age. Hales, who offers teachers’ guides and educational activities to go along with the lessons in her books, says she chose swimming as one of Ellie the Wienerdog’s adventures because it’s a valuable skill that all children should learn. “Most children are around water in some form, whether it’s a pool, a river, a pond, a lake or the ocean,” she says. “So learning to swim isn’t just for fun. It’s also important for safety.”

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2017
The Pediatric Academy Cites Several Water-Safety Tips for Parents, Including: 1. Never – even for a moment – leave small children alone or in the care of another young child while in bathtubs, pools, spas or wading pools, or near irrigation ditches or standing water. 2. Empty water from buckets and other containers immediately after use. 3. To prevent drowning in toilets, young children should not be left alone in the bathroom. 4. Closely supervise children in and around water. With infants, toddlers, and weak swimmers, an adult should be within an arm’s length. With older children and better swimmers, an adult should be focused on the child and not distracted by other activities. Bath seats cannot substitute for adult supervision. 5. If children are in out-of-home child care, ask about exposure to water and the ratio of adults to children. 6. If you have a pool, install a four-sided fence that is at least 4-feet high to limit access to the pool. The fence should be hard to climb (not chain-link) and have a self-latching, self-closing gate. Families may consider pool alarms and rigid pool covers as additional layers of protection, but neither can take the place of a fence. 7. Parents, caregivers, and pool owners should learn CPR. 8. Do not use air-filled swimming aids (such as inflatable arm bands) in place of life jackets. They can deflate and are not designed to keep swimmers safe. 9. All children should wear a life jacket when riding in a boat. Small children and nonswimmers should also wear one at water’s edge, such as on a river bank or pier.
“When Ellie finally swims, she realizes that learning something new is wonderful and if you give it a try, you can do anything you wish,” Hales says. “This is a lesson I hope all children will take to heart, not only when learning to swim, but also when facing any challenge that comes their way.” K.J. Hales (www.kjhales-author.com) is author of the educational children’s books series, Life’s Little Lessons by Ellie the Wienerdog (www.ellietheweinerdog.com).

Backyard BBQs, Fourth of July celebrations, block parties, camping – it wouldn’t be a Colorado summer without these fun activities. With the fun, though, comes risk of accidental fires and other emergencies.
Everyone can do their part to help minimize our community’s risk for fires. • Make sure to put some space between your grill and your house. This includes grilling out in the open and not under an eave or in a garage, as well as keeping the grill away from flammable items such as low-lying tree branches and furnishings. • Check your propane. Hoses can erode over time, so be sure to check your propane tank for any leaks. • Let your charcoal chill. We love the taste of a burger cooked over charcoal. However, when you’re finished grilling, allow the coals to cool, and then dispose of them in a metal container. • Douse your fire pit. Make sure to douse the fire thoroughly with water and ensure the area is cool to touch before going to sleep or leaving the area. • Never leave your grill unattended and keep children at least three feet away. • Dispose of your smoking materials properly. Extinguish cigarettes in a container with sand or water. Don’t use a flower pot with potting soil because the soil contains flammable materials. • If building a campfire, check out smokeybear. com for easy-to-follow tips on building a campfire safely and properly extinguishing it to avoid a wildfire from starting.
