FROM THE
Spring – and Change –
is in the Air...
One of the reasons that I like this issue so much is because of the graduation reflections that we feature from students from each of Broomfield’s three high schools. I am always pleased, impressed, and inspired by the thoughtful articles shared by each senior in the section. Thank you Piper, Eliana, and Tyler for sharing your thoughts as you prepare for high school graduation and thank you to the faculty at Broomfield High, Holy Family, and Legacy who helped select this year’s writers. You can read the section on pages 20–22. As I prepare to celebrate my own graduate, the magnitude of the next several weeks is settling in. My husband and I are blessed with two wonderful daughters and our younger child is graduating from Broomfield High this year. As a mother, this throws you fully into memory overload mode. It is amazing how quickly the time passes between the first day of kindergarten and the eve of high school graduation. I remember Allison marching confidently into the doors of Birch Elementary on the first day of school and I have enjoyed watching her embrace each opportunity and challenge since. I am immeasurably proud that Allison is following in her dad’s footsteps and will study at the University of Northern Colorado to become a teacher. She is following me a bit too, as she has blossomed into an inspired and articulate writer in the past several years, ending her senior year as editor of her high school newspaper, with plans to minor in media studies. Allison has a sharp sense of humor. She is good at keeping things in perspective. She thinks about others and is very caring. She is a light in our home. She finds beauty in small things. I have made myself imagine not having her living in our house every day. Not cooking together. Not watching our favorite re-runs. Not chatting about what we both went through that day. I don’t like it. I am lucky that, just like her sister, she is staying in Colorado and will find her way home for dinner now and then. But the nest is indeed emptying. Change is in the air. It seems like somewhere in the middle someone must have stolen a few years … where did the time go? But this is the cadence of life. We watered and nurtured the flower and she is blooming. Good luck my Angel Allison! I can’t wait to see where the road takes you. Your dad and sister and I love you with all of our hearts! Congratulations to all of our local graduates – and best wishes for the future.

New Facility Allows A Precious Child to Expand Work for Disadvantaged Kids By Kristen Beckman
A Precious Child, the Broomfield-based nonprofit organization that aims to help displaced and disadvantaged children throughout the Denver Metro area, is scheduled to move into a new facility this month. “We’ve outgrown our current space,” said A Precious Child Founder and CEO Carina Martin. “Our new location will allow us to expand our services and positively impact even more deserving Colorado children and families.” A Precious Child served 44,000 children last year with the help of 5,000 volunteers. The organization had reached the point where it either had to curtail the number of children it could help or find a larger facility. Martin said the details of the new facility came together nearly perfectly. She found the land and fell in love with it three years ago. Since then, she said, a 25,852-squarefoot building was built on the land, matching almost perfectly the 25,000 square feet the organization had determined it needed to accommodate its growing operation. The new facility at 7051 W. 118th Avenue will allow the organization to consolidate the six units it currently uses under one roof and expand both its ability to accommodate volunteers and house its resource center as well as items it collects for disadvantaged children through its school supply drive and holiday gift collection. A Precious Child is counting on the help of volunteers to pack up and physically move its operation to the new facility this month. Volunteers aged 16 and up who can safely lift heavy items and assist in packing the resource center, donation center, warehouse, and offices and help move items to the new space are asked to contact Nichole Karpinsky, director of volunteer services, at Volunteer@APreciousChild.org or 303-466-4272, ext. 103. The facility will be closed to clients for about three weeks during the move. The organization also has launched the beginning of an ongoing public capital campaign called “Building a Brighter Future for Colorado Kids” to help fund the purchase of the new facility. The campaign honors the important part A Precious Child says community involvement plays in the success of its programs by allowing the community to sponsor a piece of the new facility.
14
THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2018
Through the Precious Square Foot initiative, supporters can make a $100 donation to support the organization’s growth one foot at a time. The donations are expected to help A Precious Child raise more than $2.5 million. In addition, customizable engraved bricks are also available for $250 each and will be placed in the Brick By Precious Brick walkway that will welcome clients, volunteers, and guests to the building. “A Precious Child is proud to call Broomfield home,” said Martin. “We have felt the Broomfield community’s support from the very beginning and would never have been able to have the impact on the lives of so many precious children without them.” Contact Alissa Trumbull, director of marking and communications, at Alissa@ APreciousChild.org or call 303-466-4272, ext. 108, for more information on participating in either campaign. A Precious Child, which is also celebrating its 10th year this year, is planning a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house with tours for the community in June to celebrate the opening of its new facility.

Before Stroke Strikes
ONLINE 5 STAR REVIEWS A+ RATINGS

s a neurologist, I work with many families affected by stroke. For a growing number, we can offer our latest in stroke treatment: we’re now able to remove the clot blocking the brain artery in certain cases. The improvements we’ve seen in stroke outcomes in recent years are directly linked to advances in imaging technology, new strategies for stroke treatment, and greater public awareness of stroke symptoms and the need to seek emergency care F.A.S.T.
S P R I N G S AV I N G S !
May is National Stroke Awareness month, so that’s where I’d like to focus, starting with these four facts:
OF $2,500 OR MORE
1. Up to 80% of strokes could be prevented. The top four risk factors for stroke are high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and smoking. These are lifestyle-related in some way, which means you can take steps to reduce the likelihood of having a stroke. Talk with your primary care provider about a stroke-prevention strategy. Work with your primary care to find a customized lifestyle plan for you, which should address tobacco cessation, healthy eating, staying active, and controlling your weight- these things can make a major difference.

2. Women are at higher risk of stroke than many realize. In fact, stroke kills twice as many women as breast cancer. Several factors contribute to this, including age, hormone levels, and race. The greatest concern, however, is high blood pressure. One of every three women has it and is unaware. Have yours checked regularly. 3. Family health history plays a role. If close family members have experienced strokes or cardiovascular disease, your risk may be higher than average. Do discuss this with your primary care provider as you create your personal stroke-prevention strategy. 4. Know why it’s important to act F.A.S.T. There’s a reason strokes are also called brain attacks. They are true emergencies. Your seeking medical help at the first sign can save critical minutes, and that can save brain cells – about one million neurons per minute. The newest and best technology for treatment of stroke are time-sensitive, meaning that the sooner you come to the Emergency Department, the better your chances are of treating and potentially reversing your stroke. The acronym F.A.S.T. is an easy way to remember the symptoms:

2018 Graduates
REFLECT On High School Experiences and Ponder the Journey Ahead
Tyler Harmon, Legacy High School Can I ever just stay in my comfort zone? Seriously – I’ve worked for years in high school, I’m finally starting to figure it out, and bam! It’s time to move on? First coming in to high school, I was certainly not as confident as I am now. Placed in Greek foreign languages classes, like mathematics, and without a high level of direction in the fields which interested me, I felt overwhelmed. Now that it’s finally time for graduation, I just have to start over again as a freshman in college, with the same lack of direction and timidness which accompanied me four years ago. Or do I? Abandoning my comfort zone at the end of high school does not mean that I restart in the same shoes as my younger freshman self. I actually wear bigger shoes today than four years ago! More importantly, I carry with me the personal development which I have acquired over the past four years, and regardless of my revocation of title, I am fundamentally different than my former self. This fundamental difference stems from the fact that experiences, character development, and self-discovery are immutable. No level of discomfort can change the successes of the past and, therefore, to succeed in what is to come, I will simply need to remember my former self. If my immature freshman self could make it through a challenging new environment, then it should be much easier for me today, given the experiences and skills I have acquired over the years.
20
THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2018
It’s easier to climb Everest with tools and preparation, after all. Unfortunately, this does little to calm the sea of uncertainties which churn ahead. While I have my experiences and development, there is nothing that will dilute the awkwardness of starting over in a new place, completely out of my comfort zone. But one of the most important revelations of my years in high school is that character development is rare when you are comfortable! Are you more likely to develop your character when you are put to the test and challenged, or when you are content? Certainly the former, and this should be the constitutional motivator for the trials ahead.
Eliana Sierra, Holy Family High School Throughout my four years at Holy Family High School, not only have I grown mentally, and physically, but I have grown into a person I am proud of. When I entered as a fourteenyear-old freshman, I was unsure of myself, my purpose, and who I was. Leaving high school, I can proudly say I have found myself; through turbulent friendships, and mentoring teachers, I now know who Eliana Sierra is – as least better than I did before. As I approach graduation, I am reminded of everything leading up to this moment. Finding out who my true friends are, and the struggle to “fit in.” Learning that not everyone may like you, and that’s okay, was the hardest lesson I had to learn throughout my high school years. But it wasn’t just petty drama, because to my bitter discomfort, I came head-on with discrimination. Growing up Mexican-American never proved to be a struggle, but that changed; because when I was excited about the dress I was wearing to homecoming that hit just above my knee, a girl remarked, “Oh you can’t pull that off. Mexicans only wear short dresses.” Walking down the hallway I overheard someone complain, “I don’t want to have my bake sale there. That’s where all the Mexicans live so they can’t even afford to buy anything.” And even a remark from one girl in my class stating, “If you think you’re being oppressed, then maybe you should leave America.” When this happens, you can’t help but think there is something
wrong with you. And reversing that way of thinking made me who I am today. Being treated differently pushes me to work harder and be the best version of myself I can be, because I have something to prove. I know that not everyone may like me, but that does not stop me from holding my head high, brown eyes and all. I am not the same person I was when I walked into Mrs. Nason’s Algebra I class the first day of freshman year, I have grown (from 5’1 to 5’5) into a better, stronger, more confident person. I truly believe Holy Family has prepared me to continue on to college with success. I know my worth, my values, who I am, and who I want to be. With all of Holy Family’s teachings in my back pocket, I can’t wait to see what is in store for my future, I know it will be nothing less than extraordinary.

The first house that I lived in that I have memories from. The King Soopers on Miramonte that gives away free cookies to kids and that was the only reason I ever agreed to go shopping with my mom when I was younger. Mr. Hedges, the Birch Elementary custodian who taught me kindness and resilience. Walking through the grocery store and being stopped by five people who ask you about your family, so you ask them about theirs even if you aren’t really sure who they are but they know your mom and they are friendly. Wearing a winter coat to school in the morning because it’s snowing but having a pair of shorts in your car because it’s supposed to be 80 degrees by the end of the day. The view by the water towers in October, when you can’t tell where the orange brilliance from the pumpkin patch ends and the orange reflected off clouds during sunset begins. Full of neighborhoods with too many dead-ends for someone with a terrible sense of direction like me. Waking up to snow-covered trees and a shoveled driveway thanks to generous neighbors. Small. Close to the city and the mountains for when the small feels too small. Easy to return to, for when the enormity of the world is too overwhelming. Smokey barbecues in the summer at Northmoor Park, surrounded by friends, friends of friends, and people who you have never seen before who might just be looking for free food or friendly conversation. The same man walking the same dog around the neighborhood who I have seen almost every day for the 14 years I have lived here.

“Do you want some eggs from my backyard chickens?” Teachers spending hours helping you understand a subject, such as calculus, after school (thanks Mr. Felknor). Collecting thousands of used plastic bags to crochet sleeping mats for a cold weather center. Always hearing the ice cream truck in the summer but never being able to find it. Returning from a trip to Morocco or Costa Rica or London or Amsterdam and having 50 texts from friends wanting to know how your trip was. School fundraisers at iPie. Chanting and screaming until your voice is gone at Legacy vs. Broomfield football games. 65,000 people who care about their town and the people in it. Not where I will be for the next four years or possibly longer, but somewhere I will always call home.

Fresh Ideas –FOR–
Spring Entertaining By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham
E
ntertaining opportunities abound in the spring! Mother’s Day, graduations, baby and bridal showers, Memorial Day, a spring fever party … the opportunities for celebrating with friends and family are endless. If you host a gathering this spring, remember the professional chef’s tips to successful hosting:
• Plan your menu so that you can make as many items in advance as possible. Do not start a complicated recipe thirty minutes before your guests arrive. • Serve some items hot, some cold, and some at room temperature. Unless you have a caterer’s kitchen, you will run out of oven space. • Have simple no-cook snacks, such as bowls of mixed nuts and marinated olives, strategically scattered around the house. A cheese and charcuterie plate can also keep guests happy if they have to wait for the main course. • Have plenty to drink, including both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. Don’t forget lots of ice! • Opt for simple and tasty rather than fussy, and don’t make anything you haven’t made before. A party is not the time to test out a new recipe. • Instead of wasteful disposables, bring out the good china and silver. Or buy mismatched dishes at the thrift store! Make the occasion special. • Remember that a calm host is the most important element for any party. Relax, grab a drink, enjoy mingling with your guests, and don’t over-think it!

Make-Your-Own Yogurt Parfait Bar A yogurt parfait bar is a fun, elegant, and healthy choice for a spring buffet. Start the display with small Mason jars or vintage teacups. Set a large bowl of plain whole-milk yogurt into a larger container of ice. Arrange a variety of toppings, including granola, nuts, cut fresh fruit, honey, jam, and anything else you can think of. Let guests design their own healthy masterpieces!
Asparagus, Fennel, and Pecorino Salad (Adapted from Food & Wine) • • • • • • • •
1/2 cup olive oil 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 1 lb. asparagus, peeled and very thinly sliced on the diagonal 1 fennel bulb, halved, cored, and very thinly sliced lengthwise 1 head radicchio, halved, cored, and torn into large pieces 3 oz. pecorino cheese, thinly shaved 2 tbsp. capers
In a large bowl, whisk together olive oil and lemon juice; season with salt and pepper. Add asparagus, fennel, endives, cheese, and capers, season with salt and pepper, and toss to coat. Transfer to a platter and serve.
Classic Deviled Eggs (Adapted from Sheila Lukins) Deviled eggs may be retro, but they’re typically the first thing to disappear on any buffet. This classic version is basic but spectacular. • • • • • • • •
6 large eggs 1 tsp. Dijon mustard 1 to 2 dashes Tabasco, to taste Kosher salt ¼ tsp. freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp. snipped fresh chives 3 tbsp. mayonnaise Paprika and chives, for garnish
1. Rinse eggs with warm water and place in a small saucepan. Cover with cold water, place pan over medium-high heat and bring to a full boil for two minutes. Turn off heat, cover and let sit for 10-12 minutes. Drain, rinse under cold water and peel. Cool in the refrigerator, loosely covered, for 15 minutes. 2. Halve eggs lengthwise and carefully scoop out yolks. Place yolks in a bowl and mash with a fork. Add mustard, Tabasco, salt, pepper, and snipped chives. Stir in mayonnaise. 3. Fill each egg white with about 1 1/2 tsp. of egg-yolk mixture and dust top with paprika. Arrange on a platter; garnish with chives.
Smoked Salmon on Cucumber Coins Unlike crackers, cucumbers hold up in the fridge, which means you can prep a few trays of these light, healthy cocktail nibbles in advance and bring them out as needed. You can certainly substitute smoked trout or mackerel, but the green and pink combination is particularly pretty and spring-like. • • • •
1 English cucumber, sliced into ¼-inch coins Sour cream or herbed cheese (such as Alouette or Boursin) 8 oz. smoked salmon, cut into small pieces Snipped chives, scallions or lemon zest for garnish
Place cucumber coins on a plate. Place sour cream or herbed cheese in a small zip-top bag and seal bag shut; snip off one tiny corner to create a piping bag. Gently pipe a scant ¼ tsp. in center of each cucumber. Top with smoked salmon and garnish with chives, scallions, or lemon zest. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve. With new food and beverage establishments entering our community all the time, it is really exciting to schedule a line-up of vendors that are both longtime community favorites and brand new to the event,” said Sam Taylor, Broomfield Chamber of Commerce President. “Tickets are already available online and we expect the event to sell out again this year, so don’t wait!” Taste It is designed around a festive street vendor ambiance created within the 1STBANK Center featuring live music provided

Words from the President:
Growing Up in the 1950s
M
any of us baby boomers were born and raised in the 1950s. That decade might have been the best time ever to be a kid growing up. Home was a safe haven. There was no need for a security system, and if you locked your house at all, the key was under the doormat. You could walk or ride your bike to school alone, and your mom would be at home when you returned after school. You could play until just before 6:00 p.m., when the family would sit down together for a planned supper— or did we call it dinner? One of my fondest memories is going to town and stopping at the diner for a cherry Coke or chocolate malt. The diner had that indescribable smell that pulled you in like a magnet. To this day, I know I have come to the right place if I walk into a diner that has red leatherette chairs and booths, Formica tabletops, and that unique diner smell that promises a great meal. Fortunately, for us Broomfielders, Great Scotts Eatery on 7510 US Highway 287, Suite A, fits that bill.

Corporate Support Extends SRB Impact By Joe Marr, MD
D
id you know that Broomfield’s older adult population doubled in size between 2005 and 2015? In 2015, 16% of Broomfielders were 60 or older. This number will grow to 28% by 2020. In addition, people in the United States aged 65 to 74 have five times the borrowing obligations than did Americans in those ages two decades ago. The net worth of Americans aged 55 to 64 is lower than it was for the same group in 1989. This mix of low savings and large loan obligations will cause many retirees to make major changes in their styles of living and to seek outside assistance – and this is a challenge to the charitable organizations that support seniors. SRB helps seniors through nutrition programs, including Meals on Wheels, and community resource programs, such as loans of medical equipment, caregiver respite, and funding for hearing aids and dental work. SRB is also expanding its support programs into transportation assistance and advocacy for seniors. In the past, SRB has approached potential donors on an annual or as needed basis to provide support for particular programs that assist seniors. To meet the significant current fiscal challenge, SRB has instituted a new program for corporate donations distributed over a fiveyear period. The program allows potential donors to contribute a smaller annual amount, but repeat that donation each year for five years. The benefits to the donor include the ability to budget over a longer time and the elimination of repeated annual requests to fund programs. An organization that contributes over a five-year period will not be approached by SRB for any other funding requests during that time. The benefits to SRB are an ability to partially predict its base income and thereby plan funding programs and expansion more accurately. Please consider joining our five-year donation program to support Broomfield seniors. Corporations and families that already contribute annually or over the five year period are listed below. Please join them in making a difference for Broomfield’s seniors.

ooking to get involved in the Broomfield community in a high impact way? Senior Resources of Broomfield is seeking new board members. Board membership has many benefits. The most significant, of course, is helping to guide and support the mission of an important local non-profit organization. In addition, you will meet new people, impact the constituents in a deep and meaningful way, and gain new skills and experiences by working with other dedicated individuals toward a common goal. SRB board members meet regularly to plan and direct fundraising events and activities, manage the SRB budget, and guide resource allocation to have the greatest impact on Broomfield seniors in need. The SRB Board actively partners with the City of Broomfield’s Senior Services Department to connect with Broomfield Seniors and provide vital financial support for unmet nutrition, medical, transportation, and other urgent needs. I have had the pleasure of working with SRB for 10 years and look forward to serving as Board President in 2019. Won’t you join me? I would love to discuss the opportunity with you. Please contact me at bvagher@gmail.com.

Spring and Summer Outdoor Events for
Fun & Fitness By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
Coloradans are fortunate to be able to stay active all year round, but the spring and summer seasons in particular are full of fun health and fitness events. Lace up your shoes for the Colorado Women’s Classic at the Westminster Promenade Terrace on Sunday, May 13. This event includes a free kids’ fun run for children aged 3 to 7, a 5K, a 10K, and a 10-mile run. Highlights of the race include cupcakes, bib chip timing, female-specific tees, and even iced towels at the finish line. The race benefits Growing Home, a local non-profit serving children and families in North Metro Denver. If you bring five or more items for donation on race day you will be entered into a raffle for awesome prizes. Information and registration can be found at www.coloradowomensclassic.com. Another fun women-focused event is the Skirt Sports13er event. This is an all-women's event that offers a half-marathon, 10K, and 5K in Louisville, on Sunday, June 3. Find out more at www.skirtsports13er.com. If you are looking for a unique running experience, and are not quite ready to enter a large race, check out the fun progressive series at Westminster City Park. The series starts on June 14 with a 1-mile race and then a mile is added to each event every other week, until a full 10K race is completed at the end of the series. This series is designed for the entry level runner/ walker who would like to try races in a professional, fun, and safe environment. Participants of all abilities are welcome. At each race, participants will receive a logo pint glass. Sign up for the entire series at www.sixpackseries.com/summer-series to receive a Six Pack Trucker’s Hat and tote bag.
Golf is pretty much a year round sport in Colorado, but the summer months are filled with tournaments, many which benefit great local organizations. On May 30, the Broomfield Rotary will be hosting the Frank Varra Police and Fire Golf Tournament at the Omni Interlocken Golf Course. This tournament raises funds to help provide for the families of police officers and fire fighters who are injured or lost in the line of duty. This tournament will be a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. and the entry fee includes cart rental, practice balls, prizes, and more. Register at www.broomfieldrotary. org/17th-annual-police-fire-golf-tournament/. On June 11, the Omni Golf Course will host another tournament, the 10th Annual A Precious Child Golf Tournament. The day includes 18 holes of golf, contests, appearances by the Broncos Cheerleaders, a cookout style lunch, and a silent auction. Registration fees cover golf fees, cart, swag bag, lunch, and beer throughout the day. All members of the community are welcome. To sign-up and for more information check out www.apreciouschild.org/event/come-golf-for-a-precious-child/.
A great family event for kids aged 6 to 12 years old is the Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby Event. The derby is sponsored by the Broomfield Open Space Foundation, the City and County of Broomfield and Colorado Parks & Wildlife. The derby is free but registration and parent/guardian supervision is required. Health and Fitness
A Broomfield Priority By Bette Erickson

Activities, exercise, prizes, and more are just a few of the perks Broomfield residents enjoy while participating in the city’s yearly Trail Adventure each June. If outdoor fun appeals to you, consider kicking off your summer with friends and fitness at the 17th Annual Broomfield Trail Adventure beginning at 7:30 a.m., Saturday, June 2, on the East side of the Legacy High School campus by the faculty parking area.
L
ast year’s Trail Adventure had some 400 participants walking, biking, and running the two routes available. Both a shorter, family-friendly path and a longer route for cyclists are offered. Broomfield is nationally known for the nearly 40% open space and public lands that enhance its 33-square miles, and in March, U.S. News and World Report ranked Broomfield County an impressive #3 as one of the top 50 healthiest counties in the country. Our city and county achieved that high rank because, “... Broomfield remains a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with dozens of parks, more than 250 walking and biking trails, and 7,000 acres of open space.” This year the trail routes will explore the Quail Creek and McKay lake areas, with a main walking loop of two to three miles. The other route is a scenic cycling loop between five- and six-miles long. These trails routes will showcase some lovely open space water features, pedestrian underpasses, and key connections to trails beyond Broomfield into Westminster. While table hosts for the June 2 event were not confirmed at press time, the Broomfield Trail Adventure not only offers a guided hike and bicycle ride, it showcases a variety of educational and interpretive tables and displays including the Broomfield Nature Program, the Broomfield Open Space Foundation, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the Broomfield Wildlife Masters, several Broomfield

City and County departments, and a live raptor display from the Birds of Prey program. A number of local volunteers and several other City departments including Health and Human Services, Recreation Services, Communications, and Public Works will also be at the event. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. offering commemorative Tee shirts and snacks followed by a morning welcome from Mayor Randy Ahrens. The guided hike begins at 8:00 a.m. The event is slated to wrap-up by 10:00 a.m. Throughout the morning, visitors can peruse the information tables and educational displays, earn prizes, and enjoy refreshments. The annual Broomfield 100 community challenge is kicking off as well that morning, carrying on throughout the summer, and concluding September 15 at Broomfield Days. The popular Broomfield 100 is a fun activity for residents to visit a variety of trails and run, hike or bike an invigorating 100 or so miles in the city throughout the summer. The goal for participants is to earn points summing to 100. As you set out on Broomfield’s trails this summer, remember that dogs are welcome on Broomfield’s trails. But remember when hiking in Broomfield, for the safety of urban wildlife and in consideration of other bicyclists and pedestrians, always keep your dog on a leash.

The Future of Broomfield:
Developments on the Horizon By Dan Powers
2018 will be a year of invigorating updates to the Broomfield landscape, from new homes and a public festival space, to the first phases of visionary business and even agricultural developments. Here’s a glimpse at several projects in the works that will shape the future of Broomfield.
At
the southwest corner of Hwy. 7 and I-25, real estate firm McWhinney has recently unveiled an inspiring update to what was formally called North Park. On 1,100 acres the new “Baseline” project will yield a remarkable, intentional creation guided by environmental stewardship, healthy living, and innovation. Kyle Harris, Vice President of Community Development for Baseline said these three themes are guiding the master plan. “We are going to build the urban heart of north Denver, one that is deeply intentional and connects people. Several foundational decisions are shaping our plan. For example, we will create a finely-grained network of streets, greenways with contemplative areas, and urban agriculture. We even have plans for an autonomous circulator system to get people to and from the transit hub at I-25, as well as interior neighborhood transit.” With a decades-long perspective, Baseline has designed partnerships with organizations such as the Butterfly Pavilion (moving here from Westminster), the Adams Five Star K-12 School District, Colorado State University, and other entities as Broomfield creates a “Science City” within the city. mindSpark Learning is a K-12 STEM education innovator that will be integrated in the design and daily activities of the new school for the neighborhood. There will be a Center Street District with a brewery, unique shops, a dog park, and areas for gathering for music and festivals. There also will be four areas
with agricultural production intended to grow food for use within the neighborhood at farmto-table restaurants. At the Metro North Chamber of Commerce State of the Region Development Showcase in March, Baseline was called “a potential global destination point” by Broomfield Mayor Randy Ahrens. He described with various data points the rationale driving so many new companies and people to Broomfield, and how Baseline is a key aspect of creating the Broomfield of tomorrow. “A lot of companies have made Broomfield their home. We’re a fast growing hub and this is very exciting,” he said. The Butterfly Pavilion’s CEO Patrick Tennyson told the crowd their new $33M center at Baseline will be double its current size and will house the Center for
ABOUT BASELINE • 1,100 acres of inspired walkable/bikable mixed-use infill development • 145 acres of natural and recreational open space • Up to 17.2 million square feet of commercial space • 6,205 homes, ranging from single-family to apartments • Up to 375,000 square feet of retail space • Up to 50,000 square feet of medical space

Invertebrate Research and Conservation. “We manage the largest butterfly monitoring project in the United States,” he said. “We are excited by our growth and taking our efforts to a whole new level of global impact. We will convene the finest invertebrate researchers from around the world and expand our efforts to tell their stories.” Patrick also described plans for a first-of-its-kind pollinatorfriendly district within the 1000+ acres of Baseline, which will ensure a healthy habitat of plants for butterflies. Learn more at http://baselinecolorado.com. Regarding the broader area around the Baseline project, the city has even more plans: “We have a vision to build the next regional employment center and urban mixed-use community of the north metro area there,” says Bo Martinez, Broomfield’s Director of Economic Development. “We already have the announcement by IKEA for their store; the expansion of the Children’s Hospital and the JP Morgan Chase operations center – which also means hundreds of jobs”.
Across town, east of Flatiron Crossing mall, the vacant area formally occupied by Best Buy and the adjacent buildings and parking structure are slated for a major redevelopment: up to 1,200 residential units have been suggested to replace the vacant buildings along with at least 10,000 sq. ft. of commercial space. The parking garage will remain and be incorporated into the design for both residents and business customers. “It’s expected to be predominantly housing, with some retail along the first floor,” said Broomfield Deputy City and County Manager Kevin Standbridge. “The proximity to Interlocken for jobs and probably more importantly the walkability to the Flatirons mall and the transit access on U.S. 36 will make this a very desirable location.” Martinez said the property owner is expected to come forward with a proposal this summer following discussions with city staff. The Civic Center is moving ahead with Broomfield City Council hearing the latest update on April 3. With the name Broomfield Town Square, the project area is approximately 16 acres between 120th Avenue and Main Street and is expected to create a connection to the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library and Community Park. Dana Crawford with Urban Real Estate reminded the Council how more than ten years of brainstorms and visioning for this area came about because the city has never had a downtown. “We didn’t ever have a place where people could gather. People wanted galleries, restaurants, music, and artwork. The whole essence of this boils down to sociability and pride. We want people to come here.” Joe Vostrejs with City Street Investors described mixing Council comments with the numerous focus groups, surveys, and public forums that the design team compiled last summer. “The community wanted something iconic to come out of this. We asked designers to come up with an answer to that – and we decided the Civitas team did that,” said Joe. Chris Parezo with Civitas outlined the project which will include a range of uses and characteristics such as affordable housing, senior amenities, incubator and entrepreneurial space, a boutique hotel, an expanded pond, entertainment spaces, hyper-local dining, and more. A pedestrian-focus and an alluring art, music, and food themed atmosphere will guide the design. Review the entire presentation with visuals at www.broomfield.org. In addition, watch for public meeting announcements to get your comments to inform zoning changes and other related land-use decisions that will be necessary to change the overall landscape.

With these projects in mind, Bo described the evolving economic fabric of Broomfield as diverse, innovative, and growing. “We are bringing in primary jobs with very high average salaries, meaning more people with disposable income to support other Broomfield businesses – and those throughout the region. Bo noted a few global companies that already have located their headquarters here: Vigga from Germany, simPRO from Australia, and Swisslog from Switzerland. At the groundbreaking for their building last December Charles Dallara, Partner and Chairman of the Americas at Partners Group – also from Switzerland – said: “In Broomfield, we believe we have found the ideal location for our headquarters, with great transport connectivity, a welcoming and businessfriendly environment, a strong local talent pool, and an excellent quality of life for our employees.” Broomfield is also home to Webroot, Oracle, SpotX, Stantec, Noosa Yoghurt, and hundreds of other companies. There are new hotels, hospitals, and banks, as well as new restaurants and service providers. “We are diversifying the economy, with a focus on growing our industries such as information technology, energy, health care, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, and more.” This natural growth as well as proactive work by Martinez and Senior Economic Development Specialist Mike Van Den Bosch will help fill the new developments and provided even more jobs for Broomfield residents and people across the Front Range. “We’ve become a global community when you look at the companies we’ve attracted.”

CodeRED:
How Do I Sign Up?
How to Stay Informed During a Local Emergency By Sara Farris
I
n the last year alone, citizens across the country were hit with a variety of major incidents, impacting a large number of people at once. Thanks to a technology called CodeRED, residents in many of the affected areas were able to receive vital emergency information keeping them safe in the midst of uncertainty. That same technology is available to residents of North Metro Fire Rescue District, and both fire and law enforcement agencies in the area are encouraging residents to sign up for free.
What is CodeRED? CodeRED is the primary alert and warning system that Broomfield and Northglenn utilize. Alerts are sent out as automated phone messages, text messages and emails and can be deployed only to users in a specific area instead of the entire city or county. Alerts may be activated by the city for incidents such as a missing child, a shelter in place order, severe weather conditions, a hazardous materials incident or any incident where the public’s safety may be at risk.
A responsive, all-hazard organization that works to provide a caring, high-quality, professional delivery of service.
Proudly serving Broomfield and Northglenn as well as portions of Adams, Boulder, Jefferson and Weld Counties.

For residents who have a CenturyLink landline or Comcast VoIP line, you will automatically receive alerts on your landline. However, you may want to enroll your cell phone or additional address to ensure you receive notifications wherever you are. If you are a resident of the fire district, there are two different avenues to sign up for CodeRED. Broomfield residents can sign up by visiting www.your911.net. Northglenn residents can register online through a link at www.northglenn.org/ codered. For any questions regarding your account information and updates, call 866-939-0911.
I’m Signed Up. Now What? Now that you’re enrolled, consider downloading the CodeRED app to your smartphone. With the app, you will receive emergency alerts wherever CodeRED is used throughout the country, not just the area you work or live in. For instance, if you signed up as a Broomfield resident but are traveling to Sarasota County, Fla., where CodeRED is also used, you will receive any emergency alerts for that county while you’re visiting. Important to note, if you have a solicitor block on your phone, you will need to unblock the CodeRED number 866-419-5000 in order to receive alerts on your phone. CodeRED will leave you a message if your phone goes unanswered. Furthermore, at any time, you can call 866-419-5000 to hear alerts that were sent in the past 30 days to your phone. In addition to registering your phone and downloading the CodeRED app, we encourage you to follow your local fire and law enforcement social media channels, such as Facebook, Twitter, and NextDoor to stay informed of emergency matters. For more information on CodeRED, visit www.nmfr.org/codered.

Meet Your
FARMER! By Elizabeth Buckingham
Over the past decade, the idea of “local food” has become more commonplace. Restaurant menus advertise local cuisine, grocery stores display Colorado Proud signs and farmers’ markets are the place to be seen on bright summer weekends. Spring is the perfect time to meet one of your local farmers and to learn more about what you can do to support local farms.
N
orth Field Farm in Lafayette is owned and farmed by Lara Miller. She launched her farm in 2010 and now farms two acres. From these two acres she produces more than 200 varieties of fresh vegetables and fruits, using only organic growing methods and taking “great care to make sure produce is pure, fresh, nutrient-dense, and flavorful.” North Field Farm sells to local restaurants and hosts plant sales, but it’s predominately supported by its CSA program. Not familiar with the term CSA? It stands for community supported agriculture, and it’s easily the best money you can spend to support small farms like North Field. Different farms structure their CSAs differently, but typically you pay upfront for a weekly share of produce during the growing season. North Field’s CSA is 22 weeks long, from late spring through fall, and includes the very best of whatever is being harvested on the farm at that time. The advantages of a CSA, according to Lara, are many – both for the farmer and the member. First, CSA fees help a farmer plan for their season and remain financially viable even before they have crops to sell; the early-season financial commitment allows for the purchase of seeds, equipment and more. A CSA also creates “a strong relationship between the farmer and the eater, which is so key in this era of disconnect,” she said. “When you join a local CSA, you know who grows your food, and you can talk to them and ask questions and become a better cook and a more responsible consumer.” Joining a CSA naturally causes people to cook and eat better, since they’re guaranteed fresh vegetables every week; North Field’s newsletter always provides plenty of helpful information on what you’re receiving, as well as how best to cook (or preserve) it. CSAs teach you about your growing area, too; we’re so accustomed to buying shipped-in produce from all over the world any time we want it that we’ve forgotten what it means to eat seasonally. When you join a CSA, you learn how to cook and eat in the context of your particular area, rather than eating what big food companies want you to eat. Many CSAs also offer add-ons, such as locally-raised meat or eggs; North Field features an organic fruit share from the Western Slope’s legendary Ela Family Farms. Lara points out that CSAs aren’t the right choice for every household, and it may take some research on your part to figure out if one will suit you. If you decide that a weekly box of produce might be a bit much for your family, consider doing your shopping directly from

local farmers’ markets. Tread carefully, though, and ask a lot of questions: on the Front Range, only certain markets - Boulder, Longmont, Lafayette, and Union Station in Denver - are “grower-only” markets, meaning vendors there have to grow and produce what they sell. Some farmers’ markets have no such regulations, so people can buy in produce from California or Mexico and sell it as “local” with no restrictions. If you’re at an early-April farmers’ market and you see fresh fruit or tomatoes, ask why; these don’t normally grow in Colorado this time of year. Ultimately, small farmers like Lara want people to have more of a relationship with their food and with the person who grew it; Lara offers gardening classes each spring in an attempt to “teach herself out of a job,” as she says. If you want to learn more about what you eat, and where it comes from, and how to grow your own, go find a local farmer. They’d love to talk to you.

Estate planning is more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide so much more to protect your family. Most of these protections are ignored in basic estate plans. By example… Mary and Bill left their son John a substantial inheritance. John had a nice family and successful career. Then came the accident. John lost control of his car and crashed into a school bus full of children. Many were hurt. John was sued and found negligent. The resulting claim far exceeded his auto insurance limits. After the insurance paid $1,000,000 to those injured, he faced a court judgment of more than $3,000,000. John was now bankrupt. Then he learned the good news. Bill and Mary had sought legal advice before their deaths. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning, because their estate was not death taxable. He told them to put beneficiary designations on everything to John, because “it is simple and avoids probate.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought advice from a counseling-oriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals. Their primary objective was to protect John after their deaths. So, Bill and Mary left their assets in a trust for John, not directly to him. As a result, John was able to keep his inheritance after the accident. While they never thought this would happen to their son, their foresight paid off. Bill and Mary had sometimes wondered if the planning they did was worth the extra time and effort. Clearly it was worth it.
