FROM THE
Celebration Season
T
is Upon Us
he month of May can hardly contain itself! With the excitement of end of school year activities, Mother’s Day, graduations, Memorial Day, and other seasonal celebrations, you might find yourself moving from party to gathering to event from week-to-week or even day-to-day. You might even find yourself hosting one of these special events! On page 20 we give some tips to help with your party planning and then on page 22 we get a little more specific with a beginner’s guide to hiring a food truck for your celebration. Food trucks have grown in popularity over the past few years and if you want to create a memorable event, this is a fun and trendy food option to consider. There are even several great Broomfieldbased trucks that are worth a look! In the midst of your celebrations, don’t forget to pause and help a neighbor in need on Saturday, May 11, and Stamp out Hunger by participating in the U.S. Postal Service food drive with donations benefiting Broomfield FISH and other local food banks. Look for the Stamp out Hunger bags in your mailboxes in early May, fill them with non-perishable food and personal items, and leave them for you postal carrier at your mailbox early on May 11. Wrap up the month by joining the City and County of Broomfield Memorial Day Ceremony and Picnic on Monday, May 28, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Broomfield County Commons. The annual event is open to the public and hosted by the Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum and Broomfield Rotary. See displays from the Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum, hear local music, and enjoy picnic food for sale from the Broomfield Lions Club.

COMMUNITY GOLFING FOR GOOD
JUNE 07
Golf Fore Kids is Bal Swan Children’s Center’s Best-Ball golf tournament benefiting Broomfield’s Bal Swan preschool, where each year more than 100 preschool children with physical and developmental challenges or speech/ language delays find themselves playing and learning alongside “typically developing” children. Golf Fore Kids will be held on Friday, June 7, with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. at The Broadlands in Broomfield. Registration is $130 per person or $500 per foursome and includes meals. At Bal Swan Children’s Center, the staff strives to impart lifelong skills to equip individuals in making a significant and sustained impact on humanity. Bal Swan serves more than 520 students annually and has served more than 9,100 children and their families since its inception as a non-profit organization 50 years ago. $3,672.78 would cover the shortfall for a child with disabilities to receive warm water pool, physical, speech, and occupational therapies along with preschool programming for a full school year and 37% of the school’s annual budget needs to be raised to cover the deficit between what the school is paid for services and the actual costs of services. Bal Swan Golf Fore Kids is one important event to help meet fundraising goals for the school. Visit www.balswan.org to learn more or to register for Golf Fore Kids.
JUNE 07
Also in June, mark your calendar for the Golf 4 A Precious Child Tournament, played at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on June 10. This is a scramble tournament and features contests throughout the course. The day includes 18 holes of golf, contests, a light breakfast sponsored by Delectable Catering, special guest appearances, beverages provided by Avery Brewing and Helluva Beverage, a cookout style lunch hosted by Ted’s Montana Grill, and live and silent auctions. Golf fees, cart, and swag bag are included with registration. A Precious Child provides children in need with opportunities and resources to empower them to achieve their full potential. A Precious Child envisions a future where every child grows up to be a secure, self-reliant, contributing member of their community. Local Salon to Host Day of Pampering for
Cancer Survivors Appearances Owner Holds Event in Honor of Her Mother
In recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day June 2, Appearances Hair Color & Design Studio will be hosting a day of pampering for cancer survivors at its 11961 Bradburn Blvd. #600, Westminster location.
My mom was diagnosed with an inoperable, terminal brain tumor two years ago and was given a prognosis of 2 to 18 months to live. Twenty-four months later, and after chemo and radiation, she is still recovering, but very much alive. The tumor shrunk and has not grown within the past year,” said Appearances Owner Sondra Thrasher, who has planned the event and is hosting it in honor of her mother and other cancer survivors. “When my mom was diagnosed, it scared me considerably. She was always my rock and I knew I had to be hers.” National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual Celebration of Life that is held in hundreds of communities nationwide, and around the world on the first Sunday in June. It is a celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families, and an outreach effort to the community. “Being the daughter of a cancer survivor, I can attest to the intense struggles that families, friends, and caregivers go through along with the person who is literally fighting for his or her life. Trying to be strong for someone you love dearly, who may or may not survive, is one of the hardest things I have ever done – and I know very well that I am not alone in this, even though it can feel so terribly isolating and lonely,” explained Thrasher. “When I found out about National Cancer Survivors Day, I was inspired to give back to all those who have been affected by the devastation surrounding cancer; to all those who are surviving every day. My hope is that they can enjoy a day for themselves to be pampered and showered with love.” The nonprofit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation provides free guidance, education, and networking to hundreds of hospitals, support groups, and other cancerrelated organizations that host events in their communities.

First responders get into their line of work because they want to help people. However, sometimes they need the help themselves, and no one knows that better than North Metro Engineer/Paramedic Mike Dawson. THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2019
In 2008, Dawson was working as a firefighter for North Metro Fire Rescue District when he was diagnosed with cancer; a disease firefighters have a much higher chance of contracting than the average population. Dawson immediately felt the strength and support from his fellow firefighters and police officers as he began his journey of intense cancer treatment. Since then, Dawson has witnessed many of his fellow first responders facing difficult challenges related to their profession. “Seeing all of the tragic events that have impacted first responders in recent years, I thought it would be great if we could do something to help out,” said Dawson. “I reached out to friends at Northglenn Police Department, and together we came up with the Red and Blue BBQ Cook-Off.” In June 2018, North Metro Fire and Northglenn Police Department hosted the inaugural Red and Blue BBQ Cook-Off. Eleven teams competed in the first event, helping raise $8,500 for the Colorado Professional Firefighters Foundation and Colorado C.O.P.S. charities. The two non-profits provide financial assistance to first responders seriously injured in the line of duty and to the families of fallen first responders. With the first event under their belt, the two departments are looking forward to growing this year’s event, which will be hosted on Saturday, June 1, at E.B. Rains Jr. Memorial Park in Northglenn from noon to 4:00 p.m. The event consists of a whole hog competition between the host departments, a BBQ cook-off competition among all teams, live music, kids’ activities, vendor booths, a beer/wine tent, and an opportunity for the community to sample BBQ from the teams while supporting the cause. Anyone wishing to enter a team in the cook-off or support the event as a sponsor or vendor can register online at www.nmfr.org/bbq. Tickets for sampling the BBQ will be sold to the public at the event, and all net profits will be donated directly to charity.

IDEAS AND TIPS
For Fun
P A R T I E S By Elizabeth Buckingham
The bright, cheerful days of spring are thankfully here once again – and there are so many reasons to celebrate the season with a party! From Mother’s Day to graduations to bridal showers to no reason whatsoever, spring is the ideal time to host a gathering.
20
THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2019
t seems obvious, but start by choosing a date and time. Is this adults-only, or is everyone included? Be specific on the invitation. If small children are invited, try to avoid common naptimes to keep the mood cheerful for all, and make sure you have plenty of food if you’ve chosen to host a gathering at a standard mealtime. Don’t try to accommodate everyone – there will always be guests who can’t make it. If it’s the season of graduation parties, however, know that you’re almost forced into having an open house-style event, because there are likely to be so many other parties happening at the same time. If it’s important that your event is the only one in town, choose your date accordingly.
Will the party have a theme? If it’s a graduation party, it’s easy to choose the décor based on school colors. Since weddings typically have color selections now too, bridal showers are a cinch to decorate for. If no obvious color scheme comes to mind, find a fun theme and base the décor, menu, and drinks around that. How about a luau? Or a Cinco de Mayo celebration? Derby Day? Maybe a garden party? Especially in Colorado, the fickle spring weather might not be quite warm enough to host your gathering outside; plan your guest list carefully, just in case everyone ends up indoors. Is there enough space to keep things comfortable, and will there be lots of kids? If so, think about staging a playroom or child’s bedroom as a space for all the kids to hang out, with particularly precious toys or mementos removed for safekeeping. The key to any successful party is to do as much as possible beforehand. Give the house and yard a good, thorough spring cleaning, and relegate everyday items that might be in the way of traffic flow. Shoes, mail, excess furniture, and kids’ toys can all be tucked away before the gathering and brought out again afterwards. Especially if the guest count is substantial, you and your guests will all appreciate the ability to move around the house easily. When planning a menu, choose simple, easy-to-make foods
that can sit out at room temperature safely, and make sure to have at least one option for guests with dietary restrictions. Big platters of fresh cut fruit and vegetables are always popular! If the buffet will be outside, there needs to be plenty of shade and ice to keep things cool. Have the bar set up in a separate area, and make it easy for guests to prepare their own drinks; a pretty dish of useful bar tools will come in handy. Save money and hassle by not stocking a full bar with every kind of drink imaginable. Instead, pre-mix a low-alcohol batched cocktail, like a Prosecco punch, and serve in pitchers with lots of ice on the side. Offer non-alcoholic options, too, like a refreshing mint lemonade, and have plenty of sparkling water on hand. Fun, festive garnishes, like cucumber slices, citrus wedges, and berries brighten up any drink. Stationery stores and dollar stores are great places to find inexpensive décor options, and kids can easily be recruited to craft unique decorations. Create custom bunting in your event’s colors, and get the family to dress in those colors, too, to keep the theme cohesive. Fresh flowers and plants liven up any table, but if those aren’t in the budget, paper flowers are easily made with helpful Internet tutorials. Thrift store vases, baskets, and trays can be repurposed for decorative groupings of balloons, snacks, and favors. Don’t forget the lighting: inexpensive white candles and tiny Christmas lights go a long way towards creating an incredible atmosphere. String and test lights well in advance, and make sure to place candles in sturdy hurricanes if there is any danger of them blowing over.
Always remember that the most important element of any party is a relaxed host. Do as much as you can in advance, then relax, grab a drink, and enjoy your guests. The more successful parties you have, the more you’ll want to have! Visit us online at: www.TheBroomfielder.com

Food Truck FOR YOUR
S g Ev t By Kristen Beckman
he popularity of food trucks has accelerated during the past decade as options have evolved beyond the taco trucks and hot dog stands of yesteryear, to gourmet mobile restaurants on wheels today.
“Back when I first started cooking professionally, food trucks were usually little lunch trucks that parked at construction sites,” said Chris Rubeck, owner of Broomfield-based Ruby Ru’s Street Eatery, which serves dishes like Bourbon Chicken, CurryWurst, and Cajun Potatoes. “Since about 2010, there has been an uprising of new food trucks doing really cool and cutting-edge food. I think it’s a trend that’s here to stay.”
22
THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2019
The public’s appetite for food trucks is healthy. The industry is in a rapid growth phase across the country and food trucks can often be found at festivals and dedicated food truck ‘rallies.’ Food trucks are also now becoming a popular catering option at events, including weddings, graduation parties, neighborhood social gatherings, corporate events, and even birthday parties. According to Matt Casarez, co-owner of Broomfield-based Mc2 Ice Cream Co. — which serves custom ice cream flavors like caramel popcorn, buttered blueberry pancake and ghost pepper raspberry — food trucks can often be cheaper than traditional catering, depending on the menu, and offer variety and choice for guests while eliminating the long lines you might find at a banquetstyle event.
Since about 2010, there has been an uprising of new food trucks doing really cool and cutting-edge food. I think it’s a trend that’s here to stay.”
Want to hire a food truck for your event this spring?
Consider the following advice from local food truck operators. Start by sampling food served by trucks operating near you to help you determine what kind of food you want to serve and find potential trucks to hire, said Rubeck. This will give you an idea of the quality of food and service you can expect and allow you to meet the truck’s owner to learn more about their event options. Many trucks will customize their menu to fit your event. For instance, Casarez said he is planning a custom red velvet ice cream flavor for a wedding booked this summer. Be aware that custom food options can affect pricing. Speaking of costs, there are two basic ways to pay for a food truck at an event. For an event like a wedding or graduation party, the host typically pays the entire cost based
either on total food consumed or a set price agreed upon in advance based on the number of guests to be served. Some events, such as neighborhood social functions or school events, lend themselves to a customer-pay model where guests buy their own food. For these types of events, trucks may require a minimum to ensure they don’t lose money on their trip if the event doesn’t draw the expected attendance or guests don’t buy as much food as anticipated. Minimums can range from a few hundred dollars to $1,000. The number of guests you plan to serve at your event can have a big impact on which food truck you eventually hire. Some trucks are large and have several people working in them, which means they can handle a large crowd. Other trucks are smaller and have a limit on how many guests they can serve. Rubeck said his truck can usually serve about 100 people per hour, so for events with more than 250 people, he advises potential clients to consider a larger-capacity truck or to hire a second truck. Typically, food truck owners take care of permitting and licensing in the areas they serve. However, if you plan to have a food truck on private property, ensure that you have permission from the venue or property owner in advance. Broomfield statutes allow food trucks to park on public streets that have on-street parking and on private property with permission as long as they do not interfere with the operation of business. In some cases, a temporary permit may be required. Ensure there is a space large enough for the food truck to park and for guests to queue. Food trucks also need power to cool and cook food. In many cases, it is ideal if the truck can plug in to a power supply. If that’s not possible, many trucks have a generator they can use, but they can be noisy and increase costs.
Food trucks are becoming extremely popular for events, so make sure to book early and be prepared to pay a deposit to hold your date. Visit us online at: www.TheBroomfielder.com

on’t miss the tasting extravaganza designed around a festive street vendor ambiance created within the 1STBANK Center, featuring live music, food and beverage offerings from local establishments, and an opportunity to learn about Broomfield’s many great non-profits and community organizations on display at the event. A regular attendee, Broomfield’s Mayor Randy Ahrens said, “One of the Best Chamber events every year. You get to enjoy the culinary delights available in Broomfield while networking with the community. I highly recommend attending.” While the vendors will represent numerous food genres as well as some of our own local breweries, wineries, and distilleries, here is just one sneak peak from Christy Reed at Book Tree Bakery who is already contemplating her sampling, “I plan on doing some type of cookie as well as a cake sample. I am debating between browned butter chocolate chunk cookies or s’mores cookies. As far as cakes go, I have so many options I haven’t even begun to narrow it down!” “The Broomfielder™ magazine and Loudmouth Media are proud to partner with the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce on this outstanding community event each year,” said Mike Garrison, owner and publisher. “Taste It is a fabulous presentation of Broomfield’s restaurant and beverage proprietors, and always reveals some new hidden gems to try.” “I look forward to this event every year! Bringing our food and beverage members together in this community showcase is great fun,” said Sam Taylor, president of The Broomfield Chamber of Commerce. “If you attended last year, you went home FULL. I am sure that this year’s event will not disappoint.”

REAL ESTATE:
Enhancing ON A BUDGET
By Elizabeth Buckingham
What you’ve heard for so long really is true: first impressions matter. And they matter even more when it comes to selling a house in a competitive market like the Denver metro area. If you’re selling your home this spring, a few simple upgrades can boost your curb appeal – and you don’t have to spend thousands to do it! 28
THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2019
Curb appeal isn’t just fancy industry jargon; as local Realtor Jen Allen, owner of Aim Realty, said, “It’s a potential buyer’s absolute first impression of your home, and you want that first impression to be a good one.” Because so much home searching is now done online first, it’s essential that your house look great both in photos and in person – and sprucing up your exterior can go a long way towards impressing buyers. Allen said that many sellers will spend a fortune improving the interior of their home but ignore the exterior, and this is a false economy as it may cause potential buyers to pass on the home without even scheduling a showing.
If your exterior light fixtures are particularly dated, they might imply that the interior is dated as well. Invest a few hundred dollars in modern fixtures; this simple expense offers a huge return on investment, according to Allen. Replace out-of-fashion brass house numbers with simple, elegant and easy-to-read black numbers. If your mailbox has seen better days, get a new one (check city postal regulations first). Purchase or make colorful, attractive seasonal wreaths – think fresh herbs, willow branches or pine cones – to make your front entrance cheerful and welcoming. If you’re lucky enough to have a front porch or other outdoor living space, put simple outdoor furniture there with bright, eye-catching pillows and other weather-resistant soft furnishings. Add pots of spring tulips, daffodils or other seasonal flowers and plants to keep things looking fresh and bright.
If you have the cash, and if your exterior paint looks markedly worse than your neighbors’, definitely consider having the exterior professionally painted. (An FHA loan may even require it.) If painting the exterior isn’t in the budget, Ms. Allen suggests that power washing can work wonders. “Power washing gets that winter dust off, and helps remove cobwebs and dead leaves to freshen the appearance,” she says. Power washers can often be rented inexpensively from home improvement stores, or a neighbor might be willing to loan you one. (Read the directions first, and never let children handle power washers.) Don’t use a power washer on windows, screens or sealants, but do wash your interior and exterior windows to add sparkle to your home. Repair and repaint any shutters or other exterior finishes that might need a touch-up. “Taking good care of your lawn is hugely important when trying to sell a home,” said Allen. Clean up dead leaves and spent branches from last year, and tidy perennial beds. Plant bright, colorful spring flowers – and then don’t forget to water them! Be sure to deadhead flowering plants and bushes regularly, especially during spring’s quick growing season, to keep everything looking fresh. Make sure the lawn is mowed and watered as needed, and that dead spots are attended to, and pull all weeds. Trim overgrown trees and bushes, especially those near the front walkway or other access points. If you have a xeriscaped yard, put down new mulch; this has immediate impact without costing a fortune. And of course, animal waste should be cleaned up regularly.
Don’t forget to tidy up! Trash and recycling containers should be neatly stored out of sight, and both kid and pet toys should be picked up regularly. Make sure the sidewalk, gutters, and public areas near your home are free of plastic bags, cigarette butts, and other trash, too.
Spending money on a home’s exterior shows pride of ownership, and it demonstrates to buyers that the owners have taken care of all aspects of the home. As the metro area reverts back to a buyers’ market, it’s important to show your home at its best. Learn more about how to increase your home’s curb appeal by visiting www.aimrealtyco.com, or contact Jen Allen directly at 303-596-8886. Visit us online at: www.TheBroomfielder.com

By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
Spring is a wonderful time of the year with numerous festivities. Mother’s Day, graduation, and the popular wedding season all call for celebration. If you are looking to pamper that special someone or yourself for one of these special days, Broomfield is home to many different spas with tons to offer. 32
THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2019
Despite the name, Massage Envy, located off Hwy 287 offers much more than massages. Along with a variety of massages, Massage Envy also offers facials with different focuses, as well as chemical peels and microderm infusions. Massage Envy also offers stretch sessions and a fairly new treatment, Rapid Tension Relief, to help relieve tension in a short amount of time. The benefits of massage are numerous. Regular massage can help ease tension, muscle pain, and relieve stress. Massage Envy prides themselves on providing affordable and high-quality treatments. Though single sessions are available, the memberships which include either a monthly facial or massage, are the most popular. Massage Envy is also open seven days a week with late weeknight and weekend hours to help accommodate even the busiest of schedules. Massage Envy also offers gift cards for that special graduate, bride or mother in your life. SpaVia Day Spa is a full-service spa with two locations serving the Broomfield area. One location is in the Orchard Mall with a newer location in the Bradburn neighborhood. SpaVia not only offers treatments but an experience. SpaVia pays attention to details to create an incredible atmosphere at reasonable prices. According to the SpaVia website, they also believe in giving back, “we value and contribute to the social causes in our communities. A portion of SpaVia’s earnings go directly to our communities for charity efforts.” Along with numerous types of massages and facials, SpaVia offers waxing, eyelash extensions, body wraps, scrubs, scalp treatments, and even make-up application. If you are looking to celebrate with a group, SpaVia offers spalebrations. These group events are ideal for bridal parties, baby showers for the mother-to-be or to celebrate with that special graduate. The website describes these events as “a special occasion with pampering spa treatments in a tranquil setting. Our resort-like amenities along with our relaxing retreat rooms will offer the space and privacy for your spalebration. We can’t wait to celebrate with you and create an exceptional experience and wonderful memories!” If you are looking for a gift for one of these occasions, SpaVia offers gift cards and monthly memberships as well. Lifetime Fitness with now two locations in the Broomfield area has a full-service spa and salon open to the public. Non-members can book any of the wide variety of treatments including hair, skin, nails, massage, lash, and hair extensions and receive a pass to utilize all of LifeTime’s facilities that day. Access to the facility includes a huge variety of group exercise classes, a weight room, pools, hot tub, sauna, and more. Shelley Crawford, the LifeSpa Manager at the location on 148th Avenue and I-25, said another great feature of visiting LifeSpa, “clients also get up to three hours of childcare in our child center if they have an appointment with us.” For brides and others in the wedding party, LifeSpa stylists offer hair extensions and up-dos. Manicures and pedicures are also available with their full-time nail technician. For Mother’s Day, LifeSpa has numerous specials to help celebrate Mom. If you purchase a $100 gift card online, you get a free $20 gift card. If you purchase a $100 gift card in the spa, the client will receive a bag filled with sample products ($80 value). Lastly, if your child is in the childcare center, they can “draw mom’s hair” and submit it to the spa between April 28 and May 13 to be entered to win a gift card for mom. For members of LifeTime Fitness, the spa offers a VIP Monthly Membership that includes a massage, facial or nail service, one or two times a month, along with 15% off retail in the salon. Shelley said, “Our technicians are skilled and trained in the latest fashions and techniques and are some of the best around.”

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MAY 2019
Documentation is important in many aspects of our lives today. We rely on Wills, Trusts, and Powers of Attorney to provide direction upon our disability or death. But we should not rely on standard documentation alone. The type of documents we have will not ensure an effective transition upon our disability or death. Even the best document from a legal technical perspective will fail if we don’t do these key things: The documents must be designed through personalized counseling. Your family is different than every other family. You have goals, dreams, aspirations, and relationships that cannot be properly addressed through standardized forms. You must properly title your assets so they can be captured by your estate plan. If your assets bypass the instructions you prepared, your documents are worthless and you end up in probate or worse. You must update your documentation on a regular basis. Changes in the tax and legal environment, and in your personal situation, can have a drastic effect on your plan. Your family should control the process on your disability or death. Not only should you be organized so that they are not scrambling to put your affairs in order, but they should know what to do, how to do it, and how they should pay for any assistance they will need. Preparing your family for the inevitable ensures things will go more smoothly. If you would like to learn more, attend one of our complimentary workshops.
