FROM THE
Supporting Broomfield Business –
Announcing the 2016 Talk of the Town
E
ach year in August and September we survey you, our readers, for your votes for The Broomfielder’s Talk of the Town, our annual look at Broomfield’s favorite businesses and restaurants. This year’s survey included dozens of categories and you can read about all of the winners, which we are proud to present, on pages 28-41. See which of your favorite Broomfield businesses made the top of this year’s list. Many of our winners are small local businesses. We all know that shopping local is good for our community but here are a few reminders of why it is so important, paraphrased from www.sustainableconnections.org.
1. When you buy local there is a multiplying effect. Money spent locally is more likely to be recycled through the local economy and help even more local businesses. 2. Local businesses are more likely to be supportive of community organizations. 3. Local businesses help make a community more unique. 4. Local businesses have a smaller environmental impact due to reduced transportation needs. 5. Local businesses employ local residents. 6. Local businesses are more likely to have a consistent staff and therefore provide better service. 7. Local business owners are more invested in the local community. 8. Patronizing local businesses helps support the local tax base. 9. Local businesses provide unique products and services as opposed to mass produced and marketed goods. 10. Local businesses encourage local prosperity.

Broomfield is filled with great businesses and services providers – our list simply provides a glimpse at this year’s readers’ favorites. The important thing is that we all shop local and conscientiously support the health of our community overall.
Rolling Toward the New Year I don’t know about you, but once November arrives it always feels like I am on a speeding train through the holidays and toward the end of the year and at The Broomfielder™ we are already looking ahead to our 2017 issues. We are planning for several new content features in 2017 and one of them will be a regular photo feature from our readers. For the January issue we would like to receive your best photos of Winter Beauty in Broomfield. As you go about your family winter celebrations and outdoor fun, stop and capture your best photos of Broomfield in all its winter glory. We might even use the best photo on the cover of the January issue. Submissions should be a full-color, vertical, high-resolution photo of a Broomfield venue or location, or illustrate something unequivocally “Broomfield.” Please send your submissions to graphics@loudmouthmedia.com by December 5, 2016. Thank you for reading, Tina Eichner, Editor

Broomfield FISH to Hold Annual
“Harvest of Hope” Luncheon November 15 By Elizabeth Buckingham
D
id you know that it costs more than $80,000 annually for a family with two adults and two children to be financially self-sufficient in Broomfield? Plus, a recent survey shared some disconcerting news: 61% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings, and 21% have no savings whatsoever. This lack of an emergency fund means that a seemingly minor situation – such as a failed furnace or a car repair – might propel a household into severe financial straits or even homelessness. And that’s where Broomfield FISH steps in to help. Founded in 1963, Broomfield FISH is a 501c3 non-profit and now assists more than 4,000 people in the community each year. This assistance comes in many forms, but many people think of Broomfield FISH primarily as a food bank. While the food pantry is a cornerstone of the operation, Broomfield FISH offers numerous other services as well, including transportation, housing, and utility assistance, as well as connecting clients to other resources within the community. Dayna Scott, executive director of Broomfield FISH, shared that the organization is primarily volunteer-run and “is really neighbors helping neighbors.” She explained that Broomfield FISH offers a variety of resources designed to keep people financially stable or help them get back on their feet after a crisis. She is particularly proud of the Navigator Program, where clients are paired one-on-one with a volunteer “navigator” to evaluate their individual situation and provide resources including financial counseling and other support. She also highlighted the Break from
12
THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2016
Hunger program, which offers assistance to food-insecure students who are apprehensive about leaving school for breaks and holidays because they’re not sure where their next meal might come from. Scott emphasized that “anyone can go through a hard time, no matter their circumstances,” and that Broomfield FISH is designed as a safety net to prevent community members from falling so far down that they can’t get back up. She mentioned that many people don’t think of Broomfield as a place where poverty exists, and that “it is sort of a hidden crisis, even though the economy is doing well.” All of these incredible programs wouldn’t be possible without community support, and on Tuesday, November 15, Broomfield FISH will host its signature annual fundraiser, “Harvest of Hope,” from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Omni Interlocken Hotel. Unlike many other fundraisers, there is no cost to attend this unique event; guests are asked to contribute any amount they’re comfortable with. The program will include speakers who have received support from Broomfield FISH sharing their stories. Scott said many community members who have received assistance and are now back on their feet return to the fundraising luncheon each year to make a donation. She said, “Harvest of Hope is a terrific way for people to really understand the impact Broomfield FISH has in the local community.” Interested in attending this inspiring event? Learn more about Broomfield FISH and register for the Harvest of Hope luncheon at www.broomfieldfish.org.

Wanted: Your Drain’s Worst Enemy Last Seen:
Wanted for:
Loitering in Sinks and Drains
Causing Sewer Overflows and Back-ups
BEWARE OF THE GREASE GOBLIN • Never pour grease down sinks, drains or into toilets. • Grease can clog pipes and cause sewer overflows and back-ups into basements, yards, and storm drains. • Grease overflows and back-ups pose potential health risks and environmental problems that can be costly to clean up.
SOLUTIONS TO THE GREASE GOBLIN • Once cooled, pour cooking oils and grease into a nonrecyclable container. Add kitty litter or coffee grounds, seal the container and place in the trash. • Scrape food scraps from dishes into trash. Minimize the use of your garbage disposal because even cooked food contains oil and grease that can clog sewer lines. • Remove oil and grease from dishes, pots, and pans with a paper towel or napkin. • Pre-wash dishes, pans, and pots with cold water before putting them in the dishwasher. Hot water does not remove oil or grease but rather liquefy them. Once cool, they return to a solid and can clog sewer lines. • Cover kitchen sink with a strainer and empty into trash as needed.

Reuse cooking oil as often as possible. Store used cooking oil in the freezer to minimize odors. Broomfield residents can participate in the used cooking oil recycling program operated by the Public Works Fleet Services Division. For more information, call Fleet Services at 303.438.6336. Start a compost pile at your home with food scraps that are not meat.

TIPS FOR A
FROM ST. ANTHONY NORTH HEALTH CAMPUS
Stay Flu Free This Year,
GET YOUR SHOT By Matthew Ludemann, MD
It’s that time of year again. The leaves have changed color, the Rocky Mountain peaks are white with snow and your doctor’s office has just received its first batch of flu shots. Of all the things we do in healthcare, flu shots stand at the summit as one of the most beneficial and cost-effective preventive actions. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), flu vaccines prevented 1.9 million cases of the flu and 67,000 hospitalizations in the 2014-2015 flu season. When most of us think of the flu, we think of pesky cold symptoms, body aches, and fevers that cause us to miss work or school for a few days. However, in some unfortunate patients, flu can be much more dangerous. Every year as a physician, I see patients with severe influenza admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at St. Anthony North Health Campus. Influenza causes an average of 23,000 deaths annually and this number rises to 46,000 deaths in particularly bad flu seasons. To provide some perspective, breast cancer causes about 40,000 deaths a year. Physicians recommend that everyone over the age of six months be vaccinated against the flu. There are high-risk groups where vaccination is especially important, including individuals over age 65, young children, pregnant women, healthcare personnel, and caregivers of small children and elders. One major change this year is that the intranasal flu vaccines, known as FluMist™, are no longer recommended. In the past, the intranasal vaccine was an option for patients with normal, healthy immune systems. However, recent studies have found that FluMist vaccine does not protect against certain strains of the flu as well as traditional flu shots. For patients over the age of 65, it is recommended to receive a high-dose version of the flu shot. Children between the ages of six months and eight years who are receiving the flu shot for the first time should get two injections, one month apart. Research is underway testing flu shots that last longer than one year, but they are not yet ready for primetime. So, at least for the time being, flu shots should be an every year must-do. They are fully covered by most health insurance plans. Many clinics, such as ours at St. Anthony North Family Medicine, can schedule flu shots as a nursing visit, meaning that you don’t even have to wait to see the doctor to get one. So get yourself and your family vaccinated now—especially Grandma and Grandpa— and enjoy a flu-free winter season.
Matthew Ludemann, MD, is a board-certified Family Medicine physician practicing at CHPG St. Anthony North Family Medicine. There are two convenient locations in Westminster—at 2551 W 84th Avenue, and at 14300 Orchard Parkway. To schedule an appointment, call 303-430-5560. Broomfield Civic Center Takes a Big Step Forward By Dan Powers
The vision for the Broomfield Civic Center is moving one big step closer to reality following the selection of the teams who will develop the 61-acre site. As described in The Broomfielder in September, for several years proposals have been brainstormed envisioning this community hub as a mixed-use space that would serve as a park-like gathering place with restaurants, retail, and minimal residential development.
O
n September 27, Broomfield City Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the developers who will be responsible for implementing the vision. Broomfield Deputy City and County Manager Kevin Standbridge summarized the selection process that was narrowed to two “solid, proven groups” following numerous meetings and presentations. Council ultimately directed staff to confirm the MOU with Urban Neighborhoods Inc. and City Street Ventures. Both companies were involved in the redevelopment of Denver’s Union Station and have a national reputation for sophisticated, integrated designs that emphasize a sense of community. Last year, Urban Neighborhood’s Dana Crawford presented to Council her company’s ideas to make the area around First Avenue and Main Street “the city’s living room,” with locally-owned shops and restaurants, a beer garden, and open spaces that could accommodate casual outdoor activities. Council was impressed with her experience blending new development with the historic
20
THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2016
architecture of existing neighborhoods and public buildings; she referenced taking cues from the design the Brunner Farmhouse and the Depot Museum. The MOU sets out the next steps, including focus sessions with the community regarding the attributes people would like to see within the space. “We expect to work hard to get a broad representation from the community,” said Kevin. “We will get the kind of community gathering place the Council has spoken about for many years.” A financial model will be created, cost estimates prepared, and negotiations will continue between the city, county, Broomfield Urban Redevelopment Authority, and the developers regarding the financing the project. Kevin emphasized that Council will have authority every step of the way over development plans and financial decisions. A formal development agreement will result from these negotiations. In addition, a planning consultant will be hired to review the list of desirable land uses, run through various iterations of how to situate those uses on the site, and make sure plans square up with the Comprehensive Plan, then those ideas will
be run through a cost analysis and brought forward to council for consideration. While there have been literally years of visioning and meetings around this topic, there is no apparent fatigue from Broomfield City Councilors; comments and questions at the Sept. 27 meeting showed Councilors are enthusiastic, engaged, and watchful. When Mayor Randy Ahrens asked for questions, Councilor Martha Derda remarked that prior focus sessions already provided ideas and asked how they would remain incorporated in the process. Kevin described how there has been a strong, constant thread of comments from residents and Council to have small, local businesses in the development and a limitation on residential development. He expects those two issues will remain. Councilor Kevin Kreeger said this is one of the most exciting and important projects the city is taking on, creating identity and a central gathering place. “It will increase tax revenue, it will bring what we most often hear people want: local, chef-owned restaurants and small retail, and will be a tremendous opportunity.” Having seen other projects by the developers, he said “What we want is what they do.” Councilor Elizabeth Law-Evans concurred this has been a really long process, with a cautious note that “if we try to do too much we’ll hinder its success. I want to be very careful of that and how we use citizen’s resources, be that land, money or whatever. We will be asked.” She called attention to financial strategy regarding the contribution of land by the city at possible reduced cost. “We need to make sure we negotiate very carefully to be sure we get the outcomes we want, from my perspective this has to make financial sense. I am dead set against an ongoing financial contribution by the city. AIl want to see a return on the citizens’ equity.” Councilor David Beacom mentioned concerns about the area around the project being landlocked, and how to create convenient access from US Hwy 36 and other points in the city. “We need to make sure we’re building
an economically viable project and not just building to get something built,” he said Kevin said focus groups and surveys will be pursued during December and the beginning of 2017. A rough timeline would suggest development not occurring until 2018. “Late 2017 would be very ambitious,” he told Council, to the sound of a couple sighs. “We’ll try, but there are a number of decisions that have to be made along the way involving Council, probably the reality is the beginning of 2018.” For updates visit www.broomfield.org and search for Civic Center. You can sign up for email updates as well.
Civic Center is public land running from 1st to 3rd Avenues and from Main to Lamar Streets. It is the hub of Broomfield’ s renowned trail and park system and includes the George Di Ciero City and County Building, the police station, Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library, the Broomfield Auditorium, North Metro Fire Rescue District headquarters, the 9/11 Memorial, the Broomfield Community Center, ball fields, and The Bay Aquatic Park.

Museum Caps Off Busy Year with
Veterans Day Celebration By Kristen Beckman
In October, the museum highlighted the role women played on the home front during World War II with the presentation of a skit about Rosie the Riveter featuring local author Shirley Jamiel. The premise of the skit was an imaginary interview by a television talk show host trying to discover who the real Rosie the Riveter was. Rosie the Riveter was a fictional character who symbolized more than 6 million female workers who took jobs that were left open when men began deploying as soldiers. These women worked in factories building weapons and equipment for the war effort as well as in other jobs. The Rosie the Riveter generation of female workers were told they could hasten victory and bring their men home more quickly from the front lines by filling these jobs. The museum also participated in many other events during the past several months, including assisting the North Metro Fire District with its annual Flag Day ceremony in June by helping to collect flags for its flag retirement ceremony. The museum also participated in Broomfield Days with a special exhibition of a Vietnam-era helicopter.
The Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum will honor veterans at its annual Veterans Day program, starting at 10:00 a.m., Friday, Nov. 11 at the Broomfield High School auditorium. The event honors and celebrates the service of past veterans and current military personnel with speeches, songs, and tributes. The celebration is free and open to the public.
T
he event will include a presentation of the colors by the combined color guard of the Broomfield Police Department and North Metro Fire Rescue, as well as instrumental and vocal patriotic music and a speech given by a veteran of the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Veterans Day event culminates a busy year for the museum and its volunteers, who organized and participated in many community events and activities during the past year.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2016
Education The museum recently launched a new program, supported by a Broomfield Cultural Council Arts, Culture & Science grant, which loans trunks filled with educational materials to schools and organizations.
The Weight/Wait trunk, for example, is filled with artifacts and materials that demonstrate both the physical burden soldiers in various conflicts were expected to carry as well as the psychological burdens and the long-lasting effects war has on soldiers. The trunk includes items such as a weighted backpack, a helmet, copies of diaries and letters written by soldiers, as well as information about post-traumatic stress related to battle. The educational materials include comics, articles, videos, books, and activities. The museum also continues to offer its Coffee and Conversations meetings twice a month, featuring either a veteran, a historian or a civilian who has a story to tell about the country’s military history, said Lew Moir, president of the museum’s board of directors. In October, the museum presented Joe McCarthy, who was a squad leader in the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Airborne Battle Group in Germany from 1961 to 1964. His unit supported NATO exercises, patrolled the East German border and participated in airborne exercises in both Turkey and Cypress. While in Germany, Joe met his future wife, Heide, whose family lived in Berlin during World War II. Another Coffee and Conversations speaker scheduled during October featured Colleen Sawyer, a Broomfield resident who provided a presentation on letters from World War II. The talk explored the role of the mail through
the love story of George Sawyer and Jane Remer (Colleen’s mother), and included topics such as V-mail, censorship, photos, and artifacts sent through the mail, and the soldiers’ concerns and everyday life from the front.
Website Refresh The museum also has been working during the past several months to update its website to give it a fresh look and make it more user friendly. The museum’s curator did much of the design work after taking into account feedback from Broomfield residents. The website aims to provide easily accessible information about upcoming events, regular programming, educational resources, and ways to support the museum. The new website and information on all of the museum’s upcoming events and programs can be found at www. broomfieldveterans.com. TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

Your Disability
When John was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, Sue worried about how she would take care of him. She thought about the additional care that would be necessary. Sue knew there would come a point where he would not recognize her anymore, despite their 51 years of marriage. When John could no longer pay their bills or make his own medical decisions, Sue didn’t have to worry about how to care for John. John and Sue had visited a counselling-oriented estate planning attorney before his diagnosis and made plans in case one of them became disabled. John left written instructions that he would maintain control over his finances and medical decisions unless his doctor, wife, and children all agreed he was no longer able to handle matters. John named their eldest son to work together with Sue to manage their money and make his health care decisions should John become disabled. John also left Sue with the appropriate legal documents so she could take care of him. Sue did not have to go to court to get the authority to make financial and medical decisions on John’s behalf. She did not have to deal with an impersonal court representative visiting their home and reporting to the court on John’s mental state. Sue knew John’s wishes and had the right people and documents in place to help her care for John physically, financially, and emotionally. Sue and John had planned ahead. They had not waited until his Alzheimer’s Disease was too advanced to make these arrangements. Sue had what she needed in place to help her through this trying time. By planning ahead, John gave Sue and his loved ones true peace of mind.

4-5 medium zucchini squash ¾ cup onions ¾ cup shredded carrots ½ cup sour cream 1 can cream of chicken soup (or you can use cream of celery) ½ stick margarine 1 box seasoned croutons (onion and garlic are best)
The year was 1982. It was the first of what would become 29 Thanksgivings with my husband’s family. His father served this Four-ingredient Cranberry Orange Relish and I’ve been making it each holiday since.
Ingredients • •
1 orange, washed but not peeled 1 12-ounce bag cranberries, washed

Directions Bake potatoes in the oven until they are soft to the touch (yielding). Let cool and slice in half. Scoop out insides being careful not to break the skin. Set skins aside. Place potatoes in large bowl and add all dairy ingredients except for the cheddar cheese. Mash potatoes thoroughly with hand masher or hand mixer until smooth. Season blended mixture generously with salt, pepper, and garlic salt. Refill skins. Sprinkle each half potato generously with grated cheddar cheese. Place potatoes in baking pan and return to oven for 20-30 minutes at 300 degrees. Be careful to not burn the cheese. Serve immediately.

Have A
Delicious & Safe
Thanksgiving By Sara Farris
As Thanksgiving nears, families start preparing for their big day of cooking. It’s a time for everyone to gather around the kitchen and table, watch football, and enjoy the cooler fall weather. But Thanksgiving is also the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment. North Metro Fire Rescue District wants to educate families on cooking safety to help prevent fires at home and avoid trips to the emergency room. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries, and the majority of them are caused by unattended cooking. Families should remember these tips in order to keep the kitchen a safe and fun place for the whole family to hang out.
48
THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2016
• Stay in the kitchen when you’re cooking. If you do have to leave the kitchen for a short period, turn the stove or oven off. • Keep flammable items such as oven mitts, hand towels, wooden utensils, etc. away from your stovetop, and don’t wear loose-fitting clothing that could accidentally dangle onto stove burners and catch on fire. • Teach your younger children to respect the “kid-free zone,” which is about a 3-foot distance from your cooking surface. Also, use the back burners when possible with the pot handles turned away from the heat source. • Make sure your smoke alarms are working properly. • If you should have a grease fire, the best way to put it out is to smother it. Never use water.
The Dangers of Deep-Frying a Turkey For those wanting a deep-fried turkey this year, North Metro Fire recommends that families have their turkey fried by a commercial food vendor, such as grocery stores and restaurants, or purchase a turkey fryer that requires no oil. Many people are unaware just how dangerous deep frying a turkey can be. The oil in a fryer gets very hot while cooking a turkey, and any exposure to the oil, whether a splash or spill, can cause serious burns to one’s skin. Even after the fryer is turned off, the oil can remain hot for hours, so remember to keep it away from children. When cooking oil is heated beyond its cooking temperature, vapors can ignite. Monitor cooking temperatures closely, and also make sure the turkey is thawed and dry before cooking. Ice or water that mixes into the hot oil can cause flare-ups. If using a gas-powered fryer, never use it indoors or on wooden surfaces due to the high risk of causing a fire. Whether cooking in the kitchen or frying anything outside, residents should always keep an extinguisher nearby in case a fire should erupt. North Metro Fire wants everyone to enjoy their Thanksgiving and time spent cooking with their family. However, everyone should remember to take safety precautions when preparing their family’s feast. If you should experience a fire, call 911 immediately.

Building Broomfield’s Economy:
Access Broomfield Economic Coalition By Dan Powers
A new economic development effort within the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce aims to build on and maximize the strengths of the city’s business environment. The Access Broomfield Economic Coalition (ABEC) will leverage expertise, insights, and resources of large and small local businesses, with a vision to ensure Broomfield companies get the resources and connections necessary to thrive.
C
hristian Booty is the Director of Business and Economic Development hired to lead ABEC. He started earlier this year, and ABEC had its formal launch on August 31. With a general philosophy that it is most effective to grow and retain existing industries and business, Christian is guiding ABEC with six focus areas: Business Climate; Business Attraction & Retention; Cluster Development; Entrepreneurship; Marketing; and Site Selection. “I’ve spent a good portion of my time visiting with Broomfield businesses and getting an understanding of what ABEC as a concept could be, how we could be relevant and fit into the broader landscape of economic development efforts by the Chamber and the city,” said Christian. Christian described how Broomfield’s well-established Chamber has more than 500 member businesses; by tapping into the business leaders of various sectors within the Chamber, ABEC can benefit from a built-in “force multiplier” which can demonstrate how rich the economic climate in Broomfield is and help to both attract new and nurture existing companies. “We should be able to achieve some of our business retention and expansion goals through sensible collaborations and interactions with our membership,” he said. On that theme, there are a few significant industry clusters, particularly around technology-oriented companies like software, bioscience, and information management. ABEC will assist as a resource to attract the millennial workforce desired by these companies via marketing programs, events to connect companies for idea sharing, and as a go-to source of assistance for start-up and nascent entrepreneurs coming out of companies looking to start their own. “These efforts all interlink and are natural activities for a Chamber,” said Christian. Some people wonder why ABEC is needed; Jennifer Kerr, CEO of the Broomfield Chamber explained the back story: “For many years the Broomfield Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) operated with substantial financial support from the city, then city leaders decided to create an internal government position to focus on economic development.” When the city made the decision to bring economic development in-house, they reduced the funding quite dramatically to the BEDC. “The BEDC was not viable without that funding, which led to the creation of a regional entity called the Northwest Denver Business Partnership. That organization ultimately didn’t succeed, as it was difficult to bring together various communities who already had their own efforts underway,” said Jennifer. “We heard from those former BEDC members they missed getting together, hearing what was going on in Broomfield’s business scene, sharing ideas, and what’s working for them. People missed the awards functions, bus tours, business gatherings, etc. But once they were gone, people began to see how important they were,” she added. “The Broomfield Chamber

of Commerce has been actively exploring how we could help serve this perceived need, and the new ABEC is actually about five years in the making.” Christian was selected from more than 100 applicants and brings years of private sector business development and marketing experience, as well as having worked for nearly a decade for the Virginia Economic Development Partnership. While there, he facilitated a $400 million, 500-job development with Rolls Royce, the auto manufacturer. “I knew [the ABEC] wouldn’t get traction without hiring someone with extensive economic development experience,” said Jennifer. Given that the City and County of Broomfield already has economic development staff, there is an intentional nuance to how Christian will guide ABEC’s projects and activities: ABEC’s intention is to emphasize retention of existing companies. The city is supportive of the ABEC launch, “The City and County of Broomfield Economic Development Department looks forward to partnering with the Broomfield Chamber of

Commerce to retain, grow, and attract new businesses, jobs, and investment to our community,” said Bo Martinez, Director of Economic Development for the City and County of Broomfield. Broomfield Mayor Randy Ahrens also sees great value in the ABEC entity: “Having an organization that can help all your major employers connect, get on the same page, share ideas, and work collaboratively on big picture issues is important – it is similar to, but a different setting than the regular Chamber of Commerce or the local government agency,” he said. “Topics like transportation, employee retention, hotel and restaurant options, redevelopment policies – these are conversations we should enable with a self-sustaining organization. Seeing companies invest in ABEC is a benefit to the economic fabric of the city and leads to more productive relationships between business and civic leaders.” See more information at http://access. broomfieldchamber.com or call Christian Booty at 303-466-1775 ext. 3.

Let Us Do the Dirty Work!
By Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO, Broomfield Chamber of Commerce
Chamber Program News The Broomfield Chamber has recently launched one new program and grown another. In working with our Members we have identified various needs that we can help meet through our organization. One is a new program for young professionals and one is an extension of our annual BLING event. The standard definition of a young professional is a person working in a specific profession that is in their 20s or 30s. Chambers are a logical organization to provide opportunities to work with these aspiring professionals. Recently the Broomfield Chamber launched HYPE: Helping Young Professionals Evolve. HYPE is a program designed for young professionals, providing business skills training, peer coaching, mentoring, networking, and community engagement. The group is for professionals in the age range of 21 to 39 who work or live in Broomfield and the surrounding area. HYPE is open to both Members and Non-Members of the Broomfield Chamber. Whether they are getting to know each other through various networking events or getting to know their community through volunteering at local non-profit organizations, we are proud to provide these connecting opportunities for our young professionals. BLING has been an annual event for almost ten years. BLING stands for Businesswomen Learning Inspiring Networking Giving, and it was created to meet the unique needs of women in business. The event started as a speaker series and then grew into a special event with booths, speakers, entertainment, shopping, fashion shows, and more. Last year we had special guest, Brook Eddy, the founder of Bhakti Chai, speak with businesswomen about her goals and challenges in starting and growing her business. This year several of our Members stepped up to extend the benefits of BLING throughout the year by offering monthly networking events, guest speakers, and a new annual event of fundraising and wine tasting. Each month they are providing experiences for personal and professional growth. If you are interested in either or both of these programs and events, please visit the Chamber’s event calendar at www.BroomfieldChamber.com. You can also contact Amanda May, our Director of Events and Engagement for more information.
