elcome to our largest issue of the year – The Talk of the Town – when we get to recognize dozens of Broomfield’s favorite businesses as selected by you – our readers. Thank you to everyone who voted and congratulations to the winners. Next time you are looking for a local product, service, or restaurant, check out the list in this issue and see who your neighbors might recommend. Broomfield Feels The October calendar was overflowing with opportunities to support numerous Broomfield non-profits through fundraising events. I was fortunate to be able to attend a few. The Broomfield Community Foundation’s Dancing with the Broomfield Stars is always an excellent event. This year I enjoyed attending with many of the new friends I have made at Booth Dancesport Ballroom since taking a turn as a Broomfield Star in 2016, catching the ballroom dancing bug through my training at Booth, and continuing to dance for the past 18 months! Congratulations to Karen Smith on the victory this year! My Mom and I attended the FRIENDS of Broomfield Variety Show and thoroughly enjoyed all of the heartfelt performances by FRIENDS’ program participants. It was a lovely and inspiring evening filled with smiles and feel-good music. If you have never been, make sure and catch it next year, The FISH Harvest of Hope Luncheon always makes me feel that the Thanksgiving season is beginning – and always fills me with gratitude for the gifts in my life and sparks those feelings of holiday giving. FISH does such a great job with this event – spreading the word about their work and mission and impressing how important they are to the community. I usually attend with several ladies from my family and did again this year – including my daughter Allison who I am proud to say serves on the FISH Youth Board. FISH offers opportunities for Broomfielders of all ages to get involved in helping the community. Nominate Your Angel in Broomfield Speaking of catching the spirit of the season, we are trying a new recognition program in The Broomfielder™ this year and would like your help. Do you know someone who selflessly gives to the community? Do you have a friend who you admire for their commitment to a cause or organization? Does your friend help others in the neighborhood and simply make their own corner of the world a better place? Is there someone who inspires you with their generosity of time, treasure or talent? We are looking for those quiet, unsung local angels who embody giving and deserve a round of thanks. We will feature as many short appreciations as space allows in the December issue. Inclusion will be determined by The Broomfielder™ magazine staff. To nominate your Angel see page 22.
Thanks for reading,

HAPPENINGS
ARTS+CULTURE NOVEMBER 17, 18, & 19 One of the most popular Disney movies of all time, Mary Poppins, is brought to life by Back Story Theatre on the Broomfield Auditorium stage in this fulllength musical adventure based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film. The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family where young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny on her way. Through the combination of magic, common sense, and a “Spoonful of Sugar,” the practically perfect Mary Poppins teaches the family how to value each other again. Appropriate for audiences of all ages, this enchanting mixture of irresistible story, iconic songs, and unforgettable dance numbers brings Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Tony-nominated Broadway musical to the Broomfield Auditorium. November 17 at 18 at 7:00 p.m. and November 19 at 2:00 p.m. Purchase tickets in advance at http:// www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3073448 BackStory Theatre is a Broomfield-based 501(c)(3) organization which, through its BackStory Theatre Academy and BackStory Youth Theatre, and BackStory Leadership Programme provides affordable theatre education and performance opportunities to local children, adults, and families. It’s an area of women’s health that’s moved into the spotlight in recent years, and it’s more than time. Because 1 of every 4 women aged 20 and older is doing her best to deal with urinary incontinence, constipation, fecal incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse, a bulging out of the vagina or uterus. As a urogynecologist—an obstetrician/gynecologist specializing in disorders of the female pelvic floor—helping women find the cause of these problems and resolving them successfully is my focus. If you’re among them, and if you’ve delayed talking with a doctor, I hope this information will help you take that step. Especially considering how significantly these very personal physical problems can limit one’s life.
A FEW FACTS: • The pelvic floor is a layer of muscles that spans the bottom of the pelvis and supports the pelvic organs (uterus, bladder, and bowel).
WALLY’S QUALITY
• Your risk of PFD is greater if you’ve been pregnant and doubles if you have had a C-section delivery. • Being overweight or obese increases pressure on the bladder and also your odds of PFD.
ME ATS & DELI
We Offer a Wide Selection of the Highest Quality Meats Available!
• Ethnicity plays a role, too, with Anglo women being statistically more likely to experience prolapse and African American women more likely to have urinary leakage or urgency. • Aging is a major factor, as the strength of the pelvic floor muscles can deteriorate as women grow older.

• Lifestyle clearly has an impact. Smoking increases the odds of prolapse. Not drinking enough water or eating processed foods raises the risk of PFD. And both caffeine and alcohol are recognized triggers.

Fortunately, our treatment options—with pharmacology, targeted rehabilitation, and surgery—are expanding. Depending upon your individual situation, your doctor may recommend PFD- strengthening exercises or medication. More complex problems may require surgery to repair and reconstruct the pelvic floor. Some of these can be achieved with minimally invasive procedures. What’s most important is that the option you choose after talking with your physician balances the risks and rewards. Regaining your personal freedom and sexual function merits a good conversation, soon. Dr. John Joyce is a fellowship-trained urogynecologist—one of only a few in the north Metro area. He practices at CHPG Women’s Specialty Health Church Ranch, 7233 Church Ranch Blvd., Westminster. To schedule an appointment, call 303-925-4038.

BCAH Follows Founders’ Goals
of Promoting & Supporting Local Art By Kristen Beckman
Each October, Americans celebrate National Arts and Humanities month with the goal of raising awareness about and encouraging participation in arts and humanities at the local, state, and national levels.
That same interest in encouraging and promoting art prompted the Broomfield City Council and then-mayor John P. Elliot Jr. to found the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities in November 1973. BCAH was chartered to be the “duly authorized and designated arts group of the City of Broomfield.” The council was founded and nurtured by ordinary citizens who were “deeply committed to promoting the cultural life in Broomfield,” said Sherill Bunetta, co-president and treasurer of BCAH. “They created this organization from a mere shared thought that support for the arts was lacking,” said Bunetta. “They rolled up their sleeves, got to work, and persevered in their endeavor; the current members are proud to follow their example.” Today, BCAH operates under the direction of two paid staff members and seven

volunteer board and honorary members. Many volunteers help the organization run its programs throughout the year. However, the council always needs more volunteers of all ages who would like to volunteer their time for an event, to join a short-term committee, or to submit their name to be a board member. Anyone interested in volunteering should email BCAH@ArtsinBroomfield.org or call 303-460-6800 to be added to the volunteer list. The mission of BCAH is to support the arts in Broomfield by providing inclusive access to the arts for people of all ages through programs, events, and varying levels of support to local arts and performance groups who share their artistic talents with the community. “Art, in its many diverse forms, fuels the mind and spirit,” said Keri Dillingham, BCAH’s office manager. “It is crucial to promoting creativity and happiness for
everyone from newborn to 100 years of age. It is also a way for communities to come together for the purpose of performance, creation, idea sharing, and enriching experiences.” Among the more than 300 events and programs the council sponsors or supports each year are Summer Sundays at the Brunner Farmhouse, the Broomfield Days Poster Contest, Broomfield Community Players, Broomfield Sister Cities program, ASTER Women’s Chamber Choir, Little Noon Music at the Brunner Farmhouse, and student art show receptions. The council also keeps the community informed about cultural and artistic events through its website, newsletter, social media, and direct mail. In addition, BCAH also participates in other local events, including the Interactive Health & Wellness Fair at Anthem Ranch, Bal Swan Fall Festival, Broomfield Days, Meals on Wheels Fundraiser, and the City and County of Broomfield’s Easter Eggstravaganza event. “To enjoy live music in an outdoor setting or plein air paint side-by-side with a fellow
resident or watch children’s eyes light up as they enjoy an engaging show, are but a few of the reasons to support a nonprofit organization like the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities,” said Dillingham. “Without community support of Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities, many programs, events, and arts groups’ performances could not take place.” BCAH relies on money raised through fundraising efforts to offer programming and provide support to the arts and cultural events around Broomfield. In February, BCAH will host its annual benefit featuring a performance by the Hazel Miller Band and emceed by comedian Dave Shirley, who has appeared on “America’s Got Talent” and host a fun game of “Grins & Frowns.” Attendees can enjoy beer and wine tasting along with snack sampling in the lobby. Funds are raised for the general operating support of the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities. BCAH, as a non-profit 501c3, relies on the support of the community to continue its mission to ensure that the arts are present and accessible in the Broomfield community. “While it is hoped that the event will pay for itself, we are striving to meet our goal of raising $8,000.00 to meet the deficit in operating expense for 2018 as BCAH is in need of community support to continue its year-round mission and services,” said Bunetta. “BCAH relies on grants, donations, and volunteers to promote and enrich the cultural landscape of Broomfield.”
To support BCAH financially, residents can attend one of several fundraising events with local businesses throughout the year or make a $25 donation, which entitles a person or family to a one-year membership to BCAH, a quarterly newsletter, discounts on selected performances and events, voting privileges, and advanced event notification. Welcoming a New Face to the
By Elizabeth Buckingham
The Broomfield Community Foundation has long been an integral part of the Broomfield community, guided by the steady hand and balanced leadership of Karen Smith. This fall, however, the Foundation will usher in a new era with the selection of Marianna Williamson as Executive Director.
24
THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2017
K
aren, who retired in October, is thrilled about the Board of Directors’ choice of Marianna to lead BCF. “She’ll be a wonderful director,” said Karen. “She is a Broomfield resident with extensive prior experience working with donors, and she is passionate about developing the foundation. Marianna is a terrific choice.” The Broomfield Community Foundation, which started in 1993, focuses on providing support through grants to non-profit groups that directly help improve overall quality of life in Broomfield. The Foundation’s mission is to connect people with causes that emphasize caring, compassion, and charitable giving. The organization provides a wide variety of grants and scholarships, as well as hosting two major events each year: the Heart of Broomfield Awards and Dancing with the Broomfield Stars. Marianna, her husband, and her daughter moved to the Anthem community in Broomfield three years ago. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of North Carolina and her Master of Science in Sport & Leisure Commerce from the University of Memphis. She brings with her extensive experience in the philanthropic world, including time at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the Boys and Girls Clubs. Marianna recently organized a volunteer group called Little Helpers of North Denver, which is a grassroots community group designed to expose children ages 4 through 12 and their parents to giving back. Activities might include volunteering at an animal shelter, having tea with homebound seniors, or cleaning and organizing the “store” at A Precious Child. Marianna said she is “anxious to get started and to meet everyone, including board members and the community.” She looks forward to using her “personal and professional experience to enhance her new role at BCF, and to start networking and linking existing connections to the Broomfield community.” Marianna also expressed how grateful she was that Karen agreed to stay on to ensure a smooth transition. Foundation Board Chairman Bruce Erley said, “While no one can ever really replace Karen Smith, Marianna brings with her an enthusiastic vigor, extensive experience, and a genuine heart for Broomfield. We are excited about the philanthropic knowledge, energy, and passion that Marianna conveyed to us.” Karen said she will remain active in the Broomfield community and wants to express her “sincere thanks to everyone who has supported BCF over the years.” For more information on the Broomfield Community Foundation, plus how to get involved in its various community events, please visit www.broomfieldfoundation.org.

Many people believe that if you use a living trust to plan your estate, that it avoids probate and costs less to administer after your death. Unfortunately, the truth is that living trusts often end up failing to avoid probate and result in your family bearing the cost of going through the formal court probate process, in addition to paying for the trust administration process. The only way to have a living trust that avoids probate and results in a more cost-effective administration is to properly implement that living trust. If you currently have a living trust, I would encourage you to look through what was provided to you by the attorney that prepared your living trust. In almost all cases, there is a letter from the attorney spelling out all of the things you need to do for the living trust to perform the way it was intended. While this letter effectively protects the attorney from you suing them, it does very little to help you have a plan that works effectively for you and your family. If you walked out of the attorney’s office with a pile of documents and there was not significant activity and follow-up after signing your trust, your plan is in danger of failure. Living trusts require proper implementation or they result in extra expense for your family, not cost savings. If you are using a living trust to plan your estate, you should understand all of the critical aspects of properly implementing that trust to get its full benefit. Just having documents stuck on the shelf or in your safe deposit box is a recipe for disaster. If you would like to learn more about an effective estate planning process that is producing results for families, attend one of our complimentary workshops.

Colorado House Rabbit Society In Broomfield Offers Bunnies Sanctuary on Their Way to a Forever Home By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
Did you know that Broomfield is home to the Colorado House Rabbit Society which rescues and rehabilitates homeless, abandoned house rabbits? This nonprofit organization, licensed by the National House Rabbit Society, is made up entirely of volunteers and therefore every cent donated goes towards helping the rabbits. The Colorado House Rabbit Society is a no-kill rescue and limits the number of rabbits they take in to ensure they can provide quality care. Rabbits that are affectionate, litter trained, and spayed or neutered are then available for adoption.
S
allie Bolich, a volunteer with the organization, explained how the society started. “The society was started in a private home basement in 1991 by Nancy LaRoche. Nancy, who had rabbits as pets, wanted to create a sanctuary for the many bunnies which are often abandoned, neglected or abused. By creating a sanctuary she believed that the rabbits could be cared for until homes were found for them. This is our mission and we do regular adoptions, but sadly the number of relinquished bunnies continues.” After cats and dogs, rabbits are the third most popular house pet. Having rabbits as pets has many benefits such as no noise and therefore no complaints from neighbors. Rabbits also have personalities and are enjoyable to interact with. Sallie said, “Bunnies are happier living in pairs than being solo so we encourage adoption to pair any bunny whose owner wants only the best for their pet.” Just as with any pet, education is needed to properly care for a rabbit. The Colorado House Rabbit Society provides education on how to take care of your animal as well as a wealth of information on rabbit care on their website at www.coloradohrs. org. The society also offers Bunny Tune-up classes at no cost which are open to anyone who has a pet rabbit regardless if they got their pet from the society. Topics covered include; handling rabbits, grooming, checking eyes, ears, chin and teeth, keeping the hocks healthy, and clipping nails. The society currently has well over 100 rabbits looking for good homes. If you are not able or looking to adopt a rabbit at this time, the Colorado House Rabbit Society has

a great Sponsor-A-Bunny program. For a small amount per day, you can help provide a rabbit with nutritious pellets, daily fresh vegetables, unlimited quality hay, bunny safe litter, frequently cleaned living spaces, and special treats while the rabbit is waiting to be adopted. Being a sponsor includes choosing the rabbit you want to sponsor, and your name, or company logo, will be displayed on your rabbit’s crate and the website. Your bunny will send you a thank you letter with a photo, monthly updates by text or email, and you can even schedule times to visit your bunny to pet and snuggle with them. You will also be notified if your bunny finds a forever home. The Colorado House Rabbit Society is a great local organization with many opportunities to get involved to help care for these adorable animals.

‘Tis the Season to Appreciate
Soldiers Veterans and By Kristen Beckman
During the holiday season, many organizations offer an opportunity to show appreciation to members of our military and veterans with cards, care packages, and other programs.
Send a Care Package The mission of Operation Gratitude is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of the military and first responder communities, and to provide volunteer opportunities for civilians anywhere in the U.S. to express their appreciation to all who serve. Every year, the organization sends more than 200,000 care packages filled with food, entertainment, hygiene supplies, and handmade items, plus personal letters of appreciation, to veterans, first responders, new recruits, wounded soldiers and their caregivers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home. Each package contains donated products valued from $45 - $100 and costs the organization $15 to assemble and ship. Since 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than 1.8 million care packages. To get involved, consider donating needed products, including handmade items, food and excess Halloween candy, or make a financial donation to offset production and shipping expenses. The organization also accepts letters that will be delivered to a deployed service member, veteran or first responder. www.operationgratitude.com

Sponsor a Wreath Twenty-five years ago, Morrill Worcestor, owner of Worcester Wreath Company in Maine, launched an effort to honor our country’s veterans with a surplus of wreaths the company had. Inspired by a boyhood trip he took to Arlington National Cemetery, Worcestor decided to have the wreaths placed in an older section of the cemetery that received few visitors. For 13 years, the project quietly continued until it gained national attention in 2005 and an effort to expand the wreath project to cemeteries across the country ensued. By 2014, Wreaths Across America and a national network of volunteers laid more than 700,000 wreaths at 1,000 locations in the U.S. and beyond. Those who would like to get involved in the wreath-laying effort can sponsor a wreath for $15 or volunteer at a local wreath-laying event. Broomfield County Commons Cemetery and Lakeview Cemetery will host a wreath-laying ceremony on Dec. 16 and are accepting donations and volunteers for the effort. The Broomfield Composite Squadron CAP is hoping to collect sponosorships for 1,000 wreaths to be placed at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Other wreath-laying ceremonies and fundraising efforts are scheduled to take place at local cemeteries. www.wreathsacrossamerica.org
Send a letter Blue Star Mothers of America was founded as an organization of mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, and female legal guardians who have children serving in the military or are veterans. Each year, the organization collects Christmas cards for troops overseas. The North Metro Denver Blue Star Moms chapter collects blank holiday cards and sets up local signing events so people can stop by to fill out a card for a service member. The group is working to set up signing times and locations and will provide updated information on its Facebook page.
Show your Support Greenlight A Vet is a campaign supported by Wal-Mart to establish visible national support for our veterans by changing one light in a visible location in your home or office to green. The effort also extends to social media, with a filter that allows Facebook users to add a green glow to their profile picture in support of veterans. The effort chose green because it is the color of hope, renewal, and well-being. The term “greenlight” also commonly means forward movement. “The simple gesture of changing one light to green creates a beacon of support and appreciation, and a visible symbol of our commitment to ‘greenlight’ veterans forward as valued members of our communities,” the organization said on its website. Those who light a green bulb in support of veterans can map their location on the program’s website. www.greenlightavet.com

Winter Salads By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham
We often think of winter as a time of calorically-dense, carb-laden comfort foods, but innovative salads can provide a fresh, crisp balance to all that heaviness. Start with interesting, bitter coldweather lettuces, like radicchio, escarole or endive. Balance those strong flavors with fresh or dried fruit, crunchy toasted nuts or seeds, earthy roasted vegetables, bright, flavorful citrus, salty, piquant cheese, nutty grains and a little sweetness from maple syrup or honey. Be gone, boring iceberg and Caesar: compelling winter salads might become your new favorites!
Winter Kale Salad with Citrus, Pomegranate Seeds and Pepitas • • • • • • • • • •
1 bunch kale, de-stemmed 1/2 cup olive oil 2 tbsp. fresh orange juice 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1 tbsp. maple syrup Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup pepitas, toasted 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds 1 cup fresh orange and/or grapefruit segments 1/2 cup crumbled goat cheese (optional)
1. Slice kale into bite-size pieces and place in a large bowl. 2. In a Mason jar, combine olive oil, citrus juices, and maple syrup and season generously with salt and pepper. Drizzle a little of the dressing over kale and vigorously rub dressing into leaves to soften kale. Allow to sit for about ten minutes, then taste and adjust seasoning as necessary. 3. Divide kale onto plates and top with toasted pepitas, pomegranate seeds, citrus segments, and cheese, if using. 4. Serve additional dressing alongside.

Escarole Salad with Pear, Red Quinoa, and Hazelnuts (Adapted from Food & Wine)
• • • • • • • • •
Roasted Beet and Endive Salad with Walnut-Tarragon Vinaigrette You can either roast or boil the beets for this salad, but roasting concentrates the vegetable’s sugars and imparts an earthier sweetness. Tarragon and vinegar are lovely counterparts to bitter endive and roasted beets. If you can find a variety of colored beets, by all means use them here. • • • • • • • • •
1/4 cup red quinoa, rinsed and drained 1/4 cup plus 2 tbsp. olive oil 3 tbsp. apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp. plus 1 tsp. honey 1 head of escarole, chopped into bite-size pieces 1 ripe pear, halved, cored and thinly sliced 1/2 cup hazelnuts, toasted and roughly chopped Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper Fresh parsley, for garnish
1. Cook quinoa in boiling salted water according to package directions until tender, about ten minutes. Drain well and spread on a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool. 2. In a large bowl, whisk olive oil with vinegar and honey. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Add escarole, pear, hazelnuts, and quinoa and toss to coat. Taste again for seasoning and serve on a large shallow platter, garnished with parsley.
2 tbsp. chopped walnuts 2 tbsp. tarragon vinegar 2 tbsp. walnut oil 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 4 Belgian endives, cut into bite-size pieces 2 cooked beets, peeled and sliced Goat cheese, optional Chives, optional Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1. Lightly toast walnuts in a dry pan over medium heat. Watch carefully; walnuts should turn golden but can burn quickly. Set aside to cool, then chop roughly. 2. In a Mason jar, shake together vinegar, oil, and garlic. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Split dressing between two large bowls. 3. Toss endive with dressing in one bowl and beets with remaining dressing in second bowl. 4. Arrange endive on individual plates, spoon beets over top, garnish with walnuts, goat cheese, and chives (if using). Serve immediately. To view The Broomfielder™ online visit: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

WASTEWATER DIVISION
Wanted: Your Drain’s Worst Enemy Last Seen:
Wanted for:
Loitering in Sinks and Drains
Causing Sewer Overflows and Back-ups
BEWARE OF THE GREASE GOBLIN • Never pour grease down sinks, drains or into toilets. • Grease can clog pipes and cause sewer overflows and back-ups into basements, yards, and storm drains. • Grease overflows and back-ups pose potential health risks and environmental problems that can be costly to clean up.
SOLUTIONS TO THE GREASE GOBLIN • Once cooled, pour cooking oils and grease into a nonrecyclable container. Add kitty litter or coffee grounds, seal the container and place in the trash. • Scrape food scraps from dishes into trash. Minimize the use of your garbage disposal because even cooked food contains oil and grease that can clog sewer lines. • Remove oil and grease from dishes, pots, and pans with a paper towel or napkin. • Pre-wash dishes, pans, and pots with cold water before putting them in the dishwasher. Hot water does not remove oil or grease but rather liquefy them. Once cool, they return to a solid and can clog sewer lines. • Cover kitchen sink with a strainer and empty into trash as needed.
MORE SOLUTIONS TO THE GREASE GOBLIN • •
•
Reuse cooking oil as often as possible. Store used cooking oil in the freezer to minimize odors. Broomfield residents can participate in the used cooking oil recycling program operated by the Public Works Fleet Services Division. For more information, call Fleet Services at 303.438.6336. Start a compost pile at your home with food scraps that are not meat.
Help keep the Grease Goblin out of your drains and in the hands of the proper authorities!

CREATE A
Festive Experience FOR HOLIDAY GUESTS By Kristen Beckman
The holidays are a time for sharing a festive spirit and seasonal cheer with friends and family, and often that means hosting loved ones visiting from out of town. If you plan to host guests during the upcoming holiday season, there are several ways you can provide a five-star, holidaythemed experience in the comfort of your home that your visitors will love.
Deck the Halls Show your guests you have been anticipating their arrival and are happy to have them sharing the holiday season with you by decorating for the season. A holiday wreath hung on your front door is a welcoming first impression. Traditional holiday wreaths typically include evergreen sprigs, pine cones, and accents like red berries, or small ornaments, or a pretty red bow. In addition to your traditional lineup of holiday decorations inside your home, consider adding special holiday touches to your guest’s room. Bedding and blankets in holiday themes or colors, along with matching throw pillows, will help your guests have sweet holiday dreams. Remember to provide extra blankets and pillows to suit your guests’ individual preferences. A tabletop Christmas tree decorated with colorful ornaments placed on the nightstand adds a festive touch to inspire holiday spirit for your guests. Decorate the headboard with a garland adorned with pretty ornaments to tie the room together.

Holiday Treats Nothing says holiday cheer quite like a warm hot chocolate or coffee and a sweet treat after a fun-filled day. Set up a coffee, tea, and hot chocolate bar in your kitchen or the guest room complete with winter or holiday-themed mugs, seasonal blends, flavored creamers, sugar, marshmallows, and whipped cream. Decorate the arrangement with candy canes, which can double as hot chocolate stirs. Holiday treats go well with a warm coffee or hot chocolate. Offer your guests sugar cookies decorated with pretty red and green sprinkles, gingerbread cutouts or fudge.
Warm Welcome Even your closest friends and family will feel more comfortable in their home away from home if you provide them with a care package of sundry items and useful information they might want or need during their stay. For holiday guests, wrap a pretty box with festive holiday paper or decorate a basket with a seasonal bow, and include items such as small bottled waters, a few small snacks, extra cell phone charging cords, facial tissue, and lip balm. A note card with your home’s Wi-Fi password, and a couple of empty outlets or a power strip to charge electronic devices, will be useful and welcomed by most guests. Other small touches can go a long way toward making your guest’s stay pleasant. Help arrange transportation to and from the airport and make sure there is ample closet and drawer space so your guests can unpack for their stay.
Comfort and Pamper Plan ahead to provide items that will make your guests feel comfortable and pampered. Small touches, like sachets in seasonal evergreen or cinnamon varieties can fill your guest’s room and bathroom with holiday scents. Make sure your guests are well equipped for pampering with a festive tray of seasonal soaps, lotions, sugar scrubs, and other toiletries. You can even try your hand at making homemade soap in peppermint or cranberry varieties in Christmas tree or gingerbread shapes. Towels in holiday colors or themes will add to the seasonal atmosphere in your guest’s quarters. Don’t forget to provide extra towels and make sure essentials like toilet paper are easy to find so your guests don’t have to ask for them.
Practical Tools For guests who may be completing last-minute shopping while staying at your home, a simple wrapping station can make their last-minute gift preparation a piece of cake. Include wrapping paper, scissors, tape, bows, and tags so they can wrap their last-minute gifts. And if your guests plan to do some sightseeing or gift shopping on their own while staying with you, maps and brochures for nearby attractions, restaurants or shopping centers will help them plan their outings.
Share the Spirit Finally, share some of your favorite holiday traditions with your out-of-town guests, whether it’s building a gingerbread house together, going for a wintery sleigh ride or drinking hot chocolate while driving around looking at holiday lights. After all, the best way to make your guest’s visit memorable is by sharing time together. To view The Broomfielder™ online visit: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

CREATING HOLIDAY
Light Magic By Dan Powers
Looking forward to untangling a huge nest of holiday lights again this year? If not, it is easy to find more convenient, energy efficient, and new remote-controlled holiday lights than ever before, and even lighting solutions that run lights through apps and illuminate based on the weather! Check out these ideas for getting your home and business brightened up for the holidays.
The biggest benefit of projection style lights is the ability to reach areas which general decorative lights cannot – no climbing on your roof to snap lights along a gutter or eaves. Plus you can extend the magical sparkling effect to your trees and bushes. For example, you can enhance your holiday decor with the impressive Points of Light machine. It adds multicolor beams and effects to almost any wall or flat surface. This projector comes with a remote control and 114 programs, enabling you to select a combination that’s just right for your Yuletide display. It uses bright LED bulbs for energy efficiency and will provide many years of holiday entertaining with family and friends.
Points of Light Deluxe Gemmy Lightshow projector with 4-button remote and 114 functions.
Similarly, the StarTastic Outdoor Laser Projector is an easy way to light up your

home and yard with projection coverage of more 4,000 square feet. The moving lights create a whimsical, star shower every time you turn it on.
This laser projector is very easy to install – all you need to do is just plug it in to a regular outlet through an extension cord. There is an on at dusk/off at dawn timer option too. With a handy standing power strip made for outdoor use, you can avoid working off of a specific outlet on one side of the house. Plus this kind of equipment has a built-in timer and can brave any weather conditions, ensuring your lights turn on and off as you choose, without having to go outside to turn them off. Creating a sparkling winter wonderland is a snap with stand-alone, solar-powered luminous nets of woven LEDs. The lights are evenly dispersed, which makes installing them as simple as draping them over your landscaping or topiaries. The easy set-up and tiny solar panel from companies such as Mr.
Light Solar and Qedertek Solar include 200 multi-colored LED lights. Lumenplay app-enabled lights enable smart control of lighting combining interactive, wireless control and social sharing of your outdoor lighting designs, Using a simple, app interface, you can customize colors, effects, and visualize music. See your home, commercial or retail outlet in a whole new light by transforming the ambience – all from a smart device. You can easily daisychain up to 500 lights to be connected to one Lumenplay Controller. The Lumenplay app itself is free to download, control, and play. Choose from more than 16 million colors, save them and share with friends on social media. You can change lighting effects with the app, speed it up, slow it down or change the direction.
For indoor use, and to a certain extent outdoors, you can get Philips Hue lights – called the “world’s smartest” LED light bulb
by its creators. Philips Hue products include lamps, dimming kits, light strips, and more. Each is controlled via a smartphone app, allowing you to change the lights to any of 16 million colors. Via the SyncMyLights App, you can create lighting “recipes” that change the colors as you choose to follow holiday music, movies, and other prompts you design. If you’re on Nextdoor, you can find information on great decorations to see in a hyper-local format. Get inspired by the decorations your neighbors have installed – the Holiday Cheer Map allows Nextdoor members everywhere to easily discover the best holiday spots to celebrate the season – from wonderful light displays, to cherished local charities, to affordable tree lots. Via the Nextdoor app, the Holiday Cheer Map is a way to find local holiday favorites recommended by the people who know the area best: your neighbors.
