W

elcome to the first issue of The Broomfielder™ dedicated to the Arts in Broomfield. In this issue you will find several articles focusing on the organizations dedicated to cultivating and maintaining the rich arts and cultural programs in our community. I don’t consider myself an “artistic” person. I can read music – a little. I can play keyboard instruments – a little. I thoroughly enjoy singing -- Christmas Carols in church when the choir and musicians are quite loud and the music is more bass then treble and my voice is not likely to be singled out from the roar. I have always been in awe of and a bit envious of people who can sing and dance and act. I have two very talented siblings who can draw and paint. I have painted a few pieces at those trendy “paint and sip wine” places, but I do not consider myself an artist in this way either. Some people might say that this stringing together of words is art, but I am not sure about that. At this point in my life I am more a consumer of arts. As a child, I danced! I danced enough to land myself on the Broomfield High School cheerleading squad but my pursuit of dance pretty much ended after that. Until my girls were born. I encouraged my two daughters to dance and each of them began taking classes at Broomfield’s Dance Arts Studio at a very young age. Dance Arts was part of our family’s life for more than a decade while my girls were young and I loved, loved, loved watching my daughters dance! One of my greatest memories is dancing in a mother daughter dance with my girls at one of the Dance Arts recitals when they were about 5 and 7. It was a country western line dance and we had so much fun! It was great to learn something together and exhilarating to perform on the stage. I must thank Heidi Thomas and Jane Spain for all of our wonderful years at Dance Arts! After the performance, as I tucked my girls into bed that night, they each told me it was the best day ever! To this day, I agree. Definitely one of the best days ever. As Pablo Picasso said, we washed a bit of the dust off that day, and just the memory has the very same powerful effect. Thanks for reading, Tina Eichner, Editor

his year’s selection for the One Book, One Broomfield program is Neverhome, by Laird Hunt. Rooted firmly in historical fact, Laird puts a fresh twist on a timeless subject, spinning the tale of a woman who leaves her husband at home to care for their children while she disguises herself as a man to fight for the Union in the Civil War. The subject of Neverhome happens to correspond with the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. Although not a requirement, past selections have sometimes coincided with historical events. Last year’s One Book, One Broomfield selection written by Margaret Coel tied her novel, Blood Memory, and her historical nonfiction book, Chief Left Hand, to the 150th anniversary of the Sand Creek Massacre. The One Book, One Broomfield program, originally launched by former Mayor Karen Stuart, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and continues to flourish. Events related to Neverhome are scheduled from October 1 through November 7 at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library. The culminating live author talk and book signing this year will be held at the Broomfield Auditorium. According to Broomfield’s Director of Library Services and Cultural Affairs Roberta Depp, more than 850 items correlating to the program last year were read and circulated, with a grand total of 1,069 people who read or listened to audio books or attended events. These numbers illustrate beautifully the mission of One Book, One Broomfield, which, according to Depp, is to “help bring the community together through literature.” Depp’s favorite part of the program is the culminating Author Talk. “Meeting and hearing the author speak about what hooked their interest, why they chose to write about their particular subject, is inspiring.”

Breast Awareness and the Importance of a Self Exam By Bhavani Chillara, MD

O

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month; a time to educate and raise awareness about the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many neglect to take the steps to properly detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. Every female over the age of 20 should be familiar with the technique, benefits, and limitations of a Breast Self Exam (BSE). Regularly examining your breasts on your own can be an important way to detect breast cancer early, when it’s more likely to be treated successfully. Not every cancer can be found this way, but it is a critical step all women should take. The best time to perform the exam is during the menstrual cycle or just after it is over. The BSE involves two aspects – Inspection and Palpation of the breast tissue.

• Inspection: For this form of breast exam, there are three positions you should use while standing in front of a mirror undressed from the waist up. The first is standing with your hands relaxed by the side of the hip, the second is with your hand on the hips tightening the chest muscles and finally clasping hands behind the head. In all above positions, notice the size, shape, position of the breasts and nipples and inspect for any skin changes by turning from side to side and leaning forward as needed to inspect all parts of the breasts including arm pits and underneath the breasts. • Palpation: This is best done in lying down position. Using your right hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel your right breast. Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together. Using up and down overlapping pattern move across the entire breast tissue using three levels of pressure – light, medium, and firm. Make sure to check your breast from the underarm to the collarbone to the middle of the sternum. Finally squeeze the nipples to check for any discharge. Any visible bumps, skin dimpling, puckering, discoloration, nipple discharge or simply any changes from previous exams must be reported. Should you have abnormalities or questions after your self-breast exam, set up an appointment with you women’s health provider.

BCAH

Nurtures Broomfield’s

Artists

Budding By Kristen Beckman

In an age of diminishing budgets for the arts throughout the country, Broomfield has taken the road less traveled. The city and its citizens have demonstrated they value the arts by supporting a variety of groups and programs that promote art in Broomfield.

O

ne local group that focuses specifically on helping artists and art-related groups is the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities (BCAH). The council provides resources and assistance to help artists gain exposure within the community as well as community events that give citizens an opportunity to enjoy a variety of art. “Our main purpose is to nurture the arts and art groups in Broomfield and the surrounding areas,” said Chippy Cianci, co-president of the BCAH board of directors. s Our main goal is to increase our general membership and recruit new artists or organizations,” said Cianci. “We are open to new ideas.

BCAH is involved with several well-known community events and organizations in Broomfield, including Broomstock, which features live music, art, and food to mark the last day of school and the beginning of summer. BCAH also organizes an annual Student Art Show, which debuted in 1995, at the Broomfield Recreation Center. This year the show featured 456 submissions from students attending 11 schools and an all-school mural submitted by Kohl Elementary School. The opening night of the show included musical entertainment provided by winners of this year’s Piano Festival, another program supported by BCAH. More than 780 people attended the show. The Broomfield Youth Symphony is another local organization supported by BCAH. The group provides an after-school music program for students at schools with limited music courses, or homeschooled students who otherwise wouldn’t have access to school-based music programs. The group now encompasses nearly 100 students and has achieved its own nonprofit status.

In all, BCAH has more than two dozen member organizations and community programs, including the ASTER Women’s Chamber Choir, Broomfield Art Guild, Broomfield Civic Chorus, Broomfield Music Teachers’ Association, Broomfield Spellbinders, Broomfield Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Repertory Singers, Dance Arts Studio, Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, Rocky Mountain Brassworks, and Summer Sundays at the Brunner Farmhouse. “Many well-known organizations in Broomfield started with BCAH and are still supporting members,” said Cianci. “We are reaching out into the community to reach artists who aren’t aware of us and what we do. “Our main goal is to increase our general membership and recruit new artists or organizations,” said Cianci. “We are open to new ideas.” More information is available at www.artsinbroomfield.org TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

WHAT IS

Creative Broomfield

By Dan Powers

• Did you celebrate Shep’s Depot Dog Day? • Have you visited the Veteran’s Memorial Museum or shows at the Audi? Those are just a few of the dozens of cultural resources in Broomfield that are nurtured via the vision of Creative Broomfield, the city’s Arts and Cultural Master Plan. This year the plan was updated to reflect the latest cultural opportunities and desires of the community following a robust public engagement process.

he concept behind Creative Broomfield is that a cultural arts planning strategy can support economic development, tourism, and the city’s quality of life goals. “Broomfield as a community really embraces culture, it’s a priority for citizens,” said Karen Gerrity, Broomfield’s Cultural Affairs Manager. While today it may be easy to identify numerous cultural amenities in Broomfield, a rich history led to the need for an update to the plan. Karen explains that when Broomfield was becoming a County in 2001, a Cultural Council was formed to manage the annual allocation of funds from the voter-approved Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD). “One of the first responsibilities of the Council was to create an Arts and Culture Master Plan,” she said. “This group was the original ‘Creative Broomfield.’ Since that time, Broomfield’s population, median income, demographics,

and various characteristics of the community have changed – the updated plan takes these factors into account. There have been dramatic changes in the last 14 years, and there are many more public cultural resources to be managed now,” said Karen. “There wasn’t a Veterans Museum then, there wasn’t a Public Arts Committee, the Cultural Affairs Division was just getting established, there was no Auditorium or 1STBank Center – all these changes meant it was time to formally update the plan.”

Gene Sobczak, President of Protea Consulting, was hired as a project consultant in September 2014 and he facilitated months of public conversations and outreach, ultimately involving more than 500 Broomfield residents, employees, and visitors. One clever process to discern people’s interests on possible events and services, such as dance, art, music, and history programs involved a public meeting in which attendees were given “Culture Cash” to discern what was important. “They could fund a variety of options, and one of the top requests was more theatrical performances at the Audi; so I put out a request to SCFD and other organizations and we have already hosted and scheduled more events,” said Karen. Another desire was more films: Karen connected with the Boulder Independent Film Festival for resources and now award winning shorts are being scheduled. Other selections included mobile museum exhibits for use in schools and throughout Broomfield, cultural programs for youth, a professional art gallery, participatory community public art projects, and renovation of Broomfield’s outdoor amphitheater.

In May, Broomfield City Council formally approved the updated plan. Key goals include: • To promote Broomfield as a well-recognized center for vibrant arts and culture activities that engage the community and contribute to economic development. • To strengthen the role of arts, culture, and heritage in Broomfield by increasing public attendance and participation in these cultural activities, encouraging advocacy for arts and culture, and expanding support for arts and cultural organizations through memberships and donations. • To enhance the cultural environment in Broomfield by conducting a thorough needs assessment of cultural assets in Broomfield to determine what additional opportunities to pursue. • To generate public/private partnerships to ensure that arts and culture programming and opportunities are incorporated successfully in community development. • To cultivate the potential and strengthen the sustainability of local arts, culture and heritage organizations through collective planning, improved communication, and more effective use of community resources. Karen points out a strength of the plan is its focus on public/private partnerships. “A lot of the arts’ success in Broomfield is based on this model. For example, the Veteran’s Memorial Museum began with citizen volunteers creating a non-profit, then the City donated the space and IT support,” said Karen. “You can look at the 1StBank Center the same way – the city owns the property and hires an entertainment manager for the space. That’s the kind of collaboration that makes the cultural landscape so rich and work so well in Broomfield. ” Broomfield’s success in ‘bringing life to great ideas’ is a testament to its understanding, if not mastery, of the ‘art’ of public/ private partnerships. Its investment in cultural groups and programs that collaborate with private and public partners offers a compelling alternative to older municipal expectations of economic development occurring from stand-alone investments in the arts. ~ From the Creative Broomfield 2015 Update

Another strength of Creative Broomfield is that it is not a plan from city staff guessing what they thought people would like. “Instead, this is from people saying ‘this is what we want and how we will help make it happen’, that inclusive process is very important.” In that vein, Karen encourages people to attend events, comment, donate to the various arts-oriented non-profits, and volunteer time on Boards. Also, “Tell City Council about an event you attend or write a letter to the editor. All this makes sure culture stays front and center in Broomfield.” For more information visit www. creativebroomfield.com or reach Karen Gerrity at kgerrity@broomfield.org or 303464-5835. Also this fall, a new piece of public art is being added to the permanent collection in the Open Space just south of the champion field in Commons Park. The Public Art Committee selected internationally renowned Colorado artist Frank Swanson and his installation Flight. The sculpture is cut from a single piece of Colorado Red Rose granite in a fashion that all four pieces are perfectly related to one another. When spread apart, the ensuing dynamic is one of birds in flight, similar to what you would see in a grassy plain or wetland area. Each piece will stand approximately 5’6” tall. Kaleidoscope of Hope Event Benefits Child Abuse Victims By Kristen Beckman

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Adams and Broomfield Counties will host its annual Kaleidoscope of Hope event on Thursday, Oct. 22, at Stonebrook Manor in Thornton. The event is the largest fundraising event of the year for the organization, which provides volunteer advocates to represent child victims of abuse and neglect during court cases.

T

he event includes both a breakfast and a luncheon that will be attended by high-profile members of the community, including business leaders, judges, and county commissioners, said Erin Kaminski, event and campaigns coordinator at CASA. The goal of the campaign is to raise donations representing one volunteer and one child per attendee. It costs $1,200 per year to recruit, train, and support one volunteer, Kaminski said. Event organizers expect 500 attendees each for the breakfast and luncheon, for a total of 1,000 attendees. CASA hopes to raise $200,000 total during this year’s event. The event raised nearly $175,000 last year. During the event, CASA leadership will provide an update on the organization’s operations followed by a presentation highlighting a volunteer and a child who has been helped by CASA. Motivational speaker Alvin Law will then speak about overcoming adversity. Broomfield Health and Human Services and the Adams County Human Services Department receive more than 7,000 calls about suspected child abuse or neglect each year. More than 1,500 children in the counties enter the child welfare court system annually. During the 2014/2015 fiscal year, CASA served 546 children with 226 volunteers. So far this year, the organization has more than 290 volunteers working on 143 active cases. The program’s goal is to serve 600 children this year. Volunteers go through 35 hours of initial training before they are assigned to their first case, and continuing education is required throughout the volunteer’s service. Depending on the length of cases and availability, each volunteer can work on several cases per year. The national average is between one and two cases per year per volunteer. The organization also has volunteer opportunities for help with recruiting as well as serving on committees and assisting with fundraising events. CASA is a nonprofit organization that depends on events such as Kaleidoscope for Hope as well as grants and individual donations to fund its operations. The organization hosts several other fundraising events throughout the year, including a golf tournament in May.

Cooking Class:

Hearty Meals for Cooler Nights By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

Football, crackling leaves, and crisp nights can only mean one thing – fall is upon us yet again. The change in weather is the perfect time to start making the switch from summer’s fresh produce to heartier meals ideal for cooler fall evenings, such as the delicious comfort food recipes below.

Classic

Meatloaf (Adapted from Ina Garten)

Meatloaf often carries a lousy reputation – dense, heavy, and greasy. Not so with this version, which can also be made with bison for a leaner dish. When making any ground meat dish, whether burgers, meatballs or meatloaf, always mix the seasonings together first, then use a very light touch to add the meat. Overworking the meat will make the meatloaf rock-solid. • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 tbsp. good olive oil 2 medium onions, diced 1 tsp. fresh thyme leaves, chopped 2 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 3 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/3 cup canned chicken or beef stock or broth 1 tbsp. tomato paste 2 1/2 lbs. ground chuck (80-85% lean) 1/2 cup plain dry bread crumbs 2 large eggs, beaten 1/2 cup ketchup

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2015

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Heat olive oil in a medium sauté pan. Add onions, thyme, salt, and pepper and cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 10 minutes, until the onions are translucent but not brown. Off the heat, add Worcestershire sauce, stock, and tomato paste. Allow to cool slightly. In a large bowl, combine onion mixture, bread crumbs, and eggs; mix lightly with a fork. Gently add meat and mix well; don’t overwork or the meatloaf will be dense. Shape the mixture into a rectangular loaf on a sheet pan covered with parchment paper or place in a traditional loaf pan. Spread ketchup evenly on top. Bake for 60-75 minutes, until internal temperature is 160 degrees and meatloaf is cooked through. Serve hot, preferably with mashed potatoes.

Classic

Pot Roast (Adapted from House & Garden)

Pot roast is rightly considered a classic, and this recipe, adapted from a now-quaint 1963 House & Garden issue, shows why it remains so. At its heart, pot roast is simply a tough cut of meat braised until it is fall-apart tender. Where it truly shines, however, is in the cook’s personalization. Use different liquids, such as stock, beer or wine, and adjust the herbs and vegetables to suit your taste (and what you have on hand). The dish can be made in a Dutch oven on the stove, in the oven or in the slow cooker, and once the initial browning and seasoning is complete, it requires virtually no other work – except to enjoy the delicious smells wafting from your kitchen. • • • • • • • • •

1/4 cup flour 5 lb. beef rump roast 2 or 3 tbsp. lard or canola oil 2 onions, sliced, or 10-12 small white onions, peeled 2 carrots, peeled and chopped Herbs and other seasonings as desired About 1 cup liquid, or as needed (beer, wine, broth, etc.) Other root vegetables as desired, such as turnips, parsnips or rutabagas Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

Dry meat well with paper towels. Season flour generously with salt and pepper and place the seasoned flour on a plate. Using your hands, press the meat into the seasoned flour and coat well on all sides. Heat a large Dutch oven or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat and add the lard or oil. Brown meat well on all sides in the hot oil. Add onions, then cover and cook over low heat for about 10 minutes. Add carrots, herbs, seasonings, and liquid. Cover tightly and simmer for about 4 hours, until meat is fork-tender. Check occasionally to ensure pan isn’t too dry; add additional liquid if needed. Add desired vegetables during the last hour of cooking. When meat is fork-tender, remove to a serving platter and cover. Pour off fat from pan gravy and simmer gently until reduced and thick. Taste and adjust for seasoning; be wary of reducing too much as this may make the sauce overly salty. Water or stock can be used to thin the gravy if necessary. Slice meat thinly and serve with pan sauce and accompanying vegetables.

hat does poverty look like in Broomfield? According to the “Self Sufficiency Standard for Colorado 2015” from the Colorado Center on Law & Policy, to live in Broomfield, a family with one adult and one preschooler needs an annual income of at least $57,878 to make ends meet. A family of two adults, an infant and a preschooler needs an annual income of at least $86,549. These figures are more than three and a half times the federal poverty level. FISH services are available to any Broomfield resident who meets the “low income” standards, which means they are generally at or below 185% of the federal poverty guidelines. In 2014, FISH helped 4,063 Broomfield residents, more than half of whom were children and senior citizens. The 2015 Harvest of Hope Fundraising Luncheon for FISH is focused around the theme, “Healthy Foods. Changing Lives.” Join FISH on Tuesday, November 10 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Omni Interlocken Hotel for this annual fundraising luncheon. The mission of FISH is to meet our neighbors’ basic human needs and provide them with the hope and tools to rise out of poverty. According to the 2015 Colorado Self Sufficiency Standards, more than 26% of Broomfield residents are at risk of needing services – due to job loss, major medical expenses, divorce, or other circumstances. FISH helps neighbors in need with food, rent, and utility assistance, transportation assistance, and the Navigator Program designed to guide people toward financial stability. The Harvest of Hope is FISH’s biggest fundraiser of the year and the goal is to raise $100,000 to support its programs.

There is no cost to attend the event, but guests are encouraged to support FISH at whatever level they are comfortable. To learn more visit www. broomfieldfish.org, call Dayna Scott at 303-465-6817, or e-mail dayna.scott@ broomfieldfish.org. FISH is looking for corporate and individual sponsors, as well as table hosts to help at the event. Broomfield Fellowship In Serving Humanity (FISH) was founded in 1963 through a collaboration between six Broomfield churches and was originally called “Broomfield Church Women United.” Recognizing that many community members did not have access to food and other important services, they decided to help. With the support and commitment of local volunteers and faith communities, they began donating and distributing food to those in need.

Bedding Donations Sought for Returning

FORT CARSON TROOPS I

magine being a U.S. soldier and being deployed in a faraway land for months and months. Imagine traveling hours upon hours to get home to your base after a long tour of duty. Imagine arriving at that base late in the night to a quiet, cold, unfurnished bed. From mid-October through December more than 3,700 troops will be returning to Fort Carson. Of those, about 1,000 will be single soldiers returning to barracks. The military no longer supplies sheets, blankets, and pillows for soldiers, but instead gives them a small allowance to buy these items on their own. Because the soldiers return at all hours of the day and night, many will be returning to empty bunks. A local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has organized a project to make sure that no soldier returns to this situation. “Our plan is to collect donations of the items needed and pack and place them on the bunks to greet returning soldiers with a ‘welcome home and thank you for your service’ note,” said Janet Beiner of the Front Range Chapter of DAR.

DAR IS ACCEPTING CASH DONATIONS TO PURCHASE ITEMS AS WELL AS NEW DONATIONS OF THE FOLLOWING ITEMS: • • • • •

Twin-sized sheets and pillow cases Standard-sized pillows Individual laundry soap pods and packets Quality toilet paper Small personal snacks such as Gatorade, nuts, chips, trail mix, granola bars and candy bars

Through a program called Project Patriot, DAR is collecting donated items and cash contributions to benefit the 1,000 single soldiers who will be returning to Fort Carson from deployment. Donations will be accepted through the month of October, and can be made by contacting the chapter at 720-524-6915, or by emailing SandyNSDAR@gmail.com for drop-off information. Donated items may also be brought to Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum during their Saturday hours of operation. A signed card will be placed with the donated bedding for each soldier to welcome them home and thank them for their service. If possible, include a card with your donation, and DAR will see that it gets to a soldier. The National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution is a volunteer women’s service organization, founded in 1890, focused on historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The next meeting of the Front Range Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, will be held October 10, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Intercession Episcopal Church Social Hall, 3101 East 100th Avenue in Thornton. The bags for the Fort Carson soldiers will be assembled on that day. Visitors are welcome to attend, lend a hand, and learn more about the organization.

HOW TO

Take Better

PHOTOS By Elizabeth Buckingham

M

odern technology has changed our lives in ways large and small, but few areas have benefitted the average consumer more than photography. Photography was once an incredibly specialized industry, with professionals buried behind expensive, intimidating, and complicated equipment. Film took time and money to develop, and mistakes were costly. That scenario still occurs in magazine shoots, but modern digital cameras have become so good – and so relatively inexpensive – that anyone can take amazing shots with a little practice. Unfortunately, in our constantly photographed Facebook / Instagram /“selfie” age, amateur photos are rarely as good as they could be. Learning just a few simple tips and techniques, however, will help you take better photos of your pets, your kids, your vacations – and of course, yourself.

Whether you’re using your phone or a fancy camera, Nicholas Buckingham, of Nick Nick Photography in Arvada, suggests the following absolute essentials to good photography:

GOOD PHOTOGRAPHY IS ABOUT UNDERSTANDING LIGHT. As a general rule, natural light is best, but artificial light also has benefits. Use your flash – amateurs assume the flash is only for indoor conditions, but pros use it outdoors too. When shooting outdoors, a flash creates light to fill in shadows created by the sun, producing a photo with better contrast and avoiding the dreaded “squinty eyes” look.

USE A REFLECTOR. Professional photos look better than yours because professionals thoroughly understand the use of light and its counterpart, shadow. They also know how to use reflectors to “bounce” light off a surface. Reflectors can be simple or complex, but they provide amazing results. TAKE A SECOND TO COMPOSE YOUR SHOT. While it’s tempting to just whip out your phone and start snapping away, there are literally trillions of images floating around in cyberspace – most average at best. Taking a photo is about showing the world your unique perspective; focus on your desired result, then use existing light to your advantage. What do you want the viewer’s eye to focus on? Are there extraneous items (hats, water bottles, billboards) in the shot that you could avoid? Have you inadvertently chopped off the top of someone’s head, or missed the rear bumper on that gorgeous classic car?

MOVE AROUND. Amateur photographers often compose every single shot identically, and it shows. Change your shooting angle. Lie on the ground and shoot up. Stand on a ladder and shoot down. Shoot from the dog’s or toddler’s viewpoint. TAKE A LOT OF PHOTOS. Put simply, you can’t get better at anything unless you perform the task repetitively. If you have the time (and your subject is willing), take at least twenty photos of the same subject, changing the angle and/or settings each time. This will teach you a great deal about lighting, composition, and your perspective, and will also help you develop skills useful in different situations.

Ready to move on from your phone? A simple DSLR might be right for you. DSLR, or digital single-lens reflex, is “a camera combines the optics and mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor, as opposed to photographic film.” $500 will get you a decent starter DSLR set-up, but if you’re serious about pursuing your passion, know that professionalgrade gear doesn’t come cheap. Mr. Buckingham recommends that beginners “spend as much as they can afford on the camera lenses, as they will outlive the body technology,” and upgrade their lens collection when finances permit. He cautions that while a good photographer can take great photos even with a lower-quality camera body, the top lenses really do make all the difference. “The lens makes the photograph; the body just captures the image.” Learning your new camera is essential, too. Initially you might start on “full auto” mode, letting the camera make all decisions for you. Once you’ve gained experience and confidence, you’ll want to start adjusting settings, such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. You’ll know you’re ready to progress when you start wishing for more “creative control” over your images. Practice with your camera in controlled environments; don’t take the chance of missing your grandchild’s first steps because you don’t know what setting to use. Above all, take as many photos as possible and show the world your unique vision. With just a little practice, you’ll find that your photos stand out in an image-crowded world!

ART

By Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO, Broomfield Chamber of Commerce

P

erhaps you are fortunate enough to carry the creative gene. Or maybe you were born to admire the artful expression of others. My brother and his wife are both artists, and I am in awe of their talents while wishing I too could create like they do. But for art to be successful you need those who create and those who appreciate. Or maybe you are able to do both! What you might not know is how important the arts and culture are to the economic vitality of a community. In his book, “The Rise of the Creative Class,” Richard Florida states that those in the highly educated high-tech workforce prefer a location with creative amenities as it helps them recruit and retain a quality workforce. Promoting arts and culture can also attract people within and outside of a community strengthening the economy through tourism. This can occur through cultural events at specific facilities like museums, galleries, and theaters as well as arenas, community centers, and public parks. There is another way the arts have an impact on business. Consider the art of the entrepreneur; someone who decides to make a living doing something that they love and feel passionate about. We are
