YOUR HEALTH!

W

elcome to our health and fitness issue. Health and fitness is one of those topics that at times many of us might want to avoid or we might even be in an outright personal war with our own health! How many of us have had false starts – buying a membership or a piece of equipment and expecting a quick result, but losing interest after just a short amount of time? I admit to doing it – more than once! We have all seen those Facebook posts about starting the day with a half a grapefruit and a piece of wheat toast, followed by a salad for lunch, and then emptying the entire contents of the refrigerator plus a bag of chips and a package of Oreos for dinner. It’s funny because many of us have been there. Commitment to an exercise program and sticking to a healthy diet can be difficult. There are many, many excuses for neglecting our health and avoiding exercise – lack of time being the predominant reason. With age, you realize that not putting in the time now, could result in an overall reduction in time later. When you think of it that way lack of time is a pretty poor excuse. In a few of the articles in this issue we share the advice to find a form of exercise that you enjoy and stick with it. As I write this column I am preparing for my final dance classes leading up to Broomfield Dancing with the Stars (which will have passed by the time you read this). For 10 weeks this year I worked at becoming a dancer and engaged in regular aerobic activity (dance class and practice) to prepare for the dance. I did not head to class thinking that I was going to exercise – I was going to dance! It was an activity that I undertook for the purpose of the fundraiser and an activity that I learned to love because of how it made me feel – happy and relaxed. And I was exercising! I really fooled myself! I may not have come out of the activity fit to run a marathon, but I do feel leaner and stronger and I lost a few pounds. For me I learned to appreciate the activity and that simply moving beats sitting still any day – and my health and fitness are better because of it. Thank you for reading, Tina Eichner, Editor

Documentation is an important part of almost every aspect of our world today. We rely on powers of attorney, wills and trusts to provide direction upon our disability or death. But we should not rely on documentation alone. The type of documents we have will not assure an effective transition upon our disability or death. Even the best document from a legal technical perspective will fail if we don’t put things in a position to work in concert with that documentation. The documentation must be designed through personalized counselling. Your family is different than every other family and you have different goals, dreams, aspirations, and relationships that cannot be properly addressed through standardized forms. You must properly title your assets so they can be captured by your estate planning documents. If your assets bypass the instructions you prepared, your documentation is worthless. You should update your documentation on a regular basis. Changes in the legal environment and in your personal situation can have a drastic effect on the outcome of your plan. Your family should control the process on your disability or death. Not only should you be organized so that they are not scrambling to put your affairs in order, but they should know what to do, how to do it, and how they should be paying for any assistance they need. Preparing your family for the inevitable makes things go more smoothly.

Hit the Trail in October With

One Book, One Broomfield By Kristen Beckman

Emma Gatewood was 67 years old in 1955 when she declared to her children that she was going for a walk and set out on a nearly 2,200 mile hike along the Appalachian Trail. This fall, Broomfield residents have the opportunity to learn more about Grandma Gatewood during the city’s One Book, One Broomfield program, which is built around Ben Montgomery’s biography of Gatewood titled “Grandma Gatewood’s Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman who Saved the Appalachian Trail.”

E

ach year, a selection committee composed of Broomfield citizens, library staff, and the mayor review a variety of books and ask for public input when searching for a title to build the One Book program. This year’s choice was submitted by a patron, said Gigi Yang, manager of adult services at the Broomfield Library. “We chose Grandma Gatewood’s Walk because we wanted an inspiring story,” said Yang. “As a 67-year-old grandmother, Emma Gatewood was an ordinary person who embodied strength and independence and ended up making a big difference to the preservation of the Appalachian Trail. We liked the themes throughout the book of nature, resilience, and connecting with strangers. We felt that many of the themes around nature, health, and community would resonate well with how people live in Broomfield.” The One Book program is held once per year, in the fall, as a kind of community book club where citizens are encouraged to read one book and participate in activities to create a shared experience through reading together. The program always culminates with a presentation and book signing by the book’s author. This year, Montgomery will present on November 5. Several other events are planned starting in late September and lasting through the first week of November, all built around the book themes of hiking, the Appalachian Trail, and how we interact with nature and our neighbors. “We are encouraging people to read Emma Gatewood’s inspiring story and also to see how some of her outlook and experience hiking the Appalachian Trail can be brought into our own lives,” said Yang. “The library has partnered with Broomfield residents such as Don and Sandy Miller, Pete Dunlaevy, and Bette Erickson to share their hiking experiences through presentations and actual hiking trips. We are also partnering with nutritionists from Health and Human Services and with Walk2Connect to present workshops on the health benefits of hiking and walking.” The program also will feature a challenge for residents to collectively hike 2,181 miles — the length of the Appalachian Trail — during October.

14

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2016

“Participants can hike around town or farther afield and then submit their mileage via the library’s One Book website or on social media with #WalkOneBook,” said Yang. “We will track the community’s progress on a map of the Appalachian trail displayed at the library.” About 1,200 people typically participate in the program by either reading the book or attending one of the related events, said Yang. The library has 90 paperback copies for checkout, two Book Group Bags, audio CD, and downloadable versions of the book and audiobook. Copies are also for sale at Coyote Ridge Books. Find more information about the program, events, and registration at www.broomfield.org.

Doing Well with Diabetes By Cathia Méndez-Vargas, MD – Senior Health First Westminster

Does it seem like you’re hearing a lot more about diabetes these days? If so, that’s good, because recent studies show nearly 50 percent of adults living in the United States have diabetes or pre-diabetes. This second term — pre-diabetes — is used when someone’s blood sugar is elevated and he or she is at greater risk of developing diabetes. And it’s there I’d like to begin … because people with pre-diabetes who make lifestyle changes can dramatically reduce their risk and enjoy much healthier lives. If you were to visit me in my office and we were concerned diabetes might be a problem, an A1C blood test would be ordered. This lab test shows your average level of blood sugar (glucose) over the three months prior. A reading of 5.7% to 6.4% would be an indication of pre-diabetes. While such numbers would not predict, with certainty, that you would develop diabetes over time, I would encourage you to consider two key steps: • Rethink what you’re eating. A diet high in fiber and low in fat can do much to control blood sugar. Eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains and smaller amounts of meats, dairy, and other animal-source foods is a simple but good guideline. Even a modest weight loss can lower your blood sugar levels. • Work in up to 150 minutes of exercise a week. Combine some aerobic exercise such as walking or Zumba, with strength training, which might include resistance training or weight training. For flexibility and stress management, consider yoga three times a week. If you’re an older adult, check out the Silver Sneakers programs at your local recreation center. Please Join Us For

WHAT’S NEW IN

FITNESS NOW By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

The fitness industry is one of the most constantly changing industries. It seems every few years there are new trends, new crazes, and new ways to workout. Even as a fitness professional myself, I find it challenging to keep up with all the latest trends. Yet, one trend I have definitely noticed that has continued to grow over the last few years is the rise of “boutique fitness studios” as well as the proliferation of personal tools to help track health and fitness.

18

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2016

Individual Approach Fitness studios are different than larger commercial gyms as they generally offer one type of workout. These studios include yoga studios, CrossFit gyms, and cycling studios or places that incorporate cardio and strength such as Orange Theory, along with a variety of other specialized small guys. These new workout places are popular for a number of reasons. First, they often create a sense of community. Many people tend to workout at the same time based on what fits their schedule. So, it is likely that you will be attending classes at these studios with the same group of people fairly often. The classes offered often have fewer participants than a large commercial gym as the studios are smaller and tailored for smaller groups. The small class sizes allow for relationships to build with the instructor as well as the other participants. Though most large gyms offer a lot of amenities such as pools, saunas, and a variety of classes and programs, many people find that they do not utilize all of these bells and whistles. Patrons primarily enjoy one type of workout and therefore might prefer the intimacy that the boutique studios offer. These small studios can also offer a bit more specialization or unique amenities such as a cold scented towel after a hot yoga workout. Boutique studios also usually offer a variety of membership options such as a plan designed around a certain number of visits per week, unlimited classes or even just a punch pass so you can drop in when it fits your schedule. This is also appealing to some as large scale gyms generally only have one monthly membership option.

Big Gyms Fill a Need Despite trends toward specialized gyms, from a large commercial gym perspective, Sarah Korb the Studio Manager for Group Fitness, Cycle and Yoga at Lifetime Fitness in Westminster is currently seeing full yoga classes, dance classes, and mixed strength and cardio classes. Variety and options are still most important for some workout buffs.

Personal Accountability Rob Howard, a Lead Fitness Specialist for Elevation Corporate Health who works in Corporate Fitness in Broomfield, which primarily focuses on keeping employees at a specific job site healthy and happy, talks about how he sees people approaching fitness today. “People are utilizing more technology and fitness trackers than ever,” he said. These can be simple trackers such as pedometers, to more advanced trackers that track sleep, calories burned, and more. “The way I have seen the fitness industry evolve over the last few years is placing more accountability on the person. The growing trend of phone apps and devices has allowed people to be more individualized in their effort. At the same time there has been a shift in fitness metrics. Where we used to rely solely on the numbers on the scale we now use the aforementioned devices to keep track of steps, heart rate, power output, daily challenge points, etc. The more metrics people can utilize, the better,” he said. “Someone who wanted to lose 10 pounds but has only lost four can now focus on more metrics to define success.” Howard agrees that small studios are becoming more popular, especially for those who might be intimated by a large commercial gym.

Holistic Approaches “Participants want a great, challenging workout that is science based and that will get them results. I also see an increase of females lifting heavier weights to build lean muscle mass.” Sarah added, “There is a deeper understanding of nutrition and eating lots of healthy carbs, proteins, and fats vs. going on a ‘diet.’ I see all over social media people posting and talking about food prepping and planning. People are connecting that body transformation results come from a combination of the right nutrition and training.”

Many fitness trends will come and go and some will even stick around for a number of years. However, what is most important when it comes to exercise and your personal fitness routine is finding something that you love to do. If you enjoy doing it, you are much more likely to actually do it. Consistency is the most important piece of the puzzle when it comes to exercise, so no matter if you love to dance, cycle or practice yoga, find something you love and do it often.

FALL EVENTS:

LIVING IN BALANCE

R E S O U R C E FA I R By Elizabeth Buckingham

ARE YOU AGED 60 OR BETTER? Or perhaps you’re the child, niece, nephew, friend, partner or caregiver of someone over 60? Make sure to mark your calendar for the Living in Balance Senior Resource Fair on Friday, October 21, at the Broomfield Community Center.

T

his community event, now in its fourth year, is designed for older adults, family members, and caregivers, and offers a wide variety of programming aimed at seniors. According to Erica Hamilton, Senior Services Supervisor for the City and County of Broomfield, “too often people don’t look for resources until it’s an emergency. The fair is designed to showcase resources to help people plan for life’s various circumstances, and specifically to give them information when they need it.” Hamilton said there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding aging, and that events like these are important because “it’s never too late to stop learning.” Depression can be common in seniors; this is attributed to many factors, including the death of loved ones and a loss of social support through retirement or relocation. Unfortunately, depression in seniors often goes undiagnosed. It is essential for everyone, but especially seniors, to avoid isolation and know that they have a valuable place within the community, but many people simply aren’t aware of the vast assortment of resources available to seniors. The Living in Balance Fair is a fun and informative day out designed to present options as well as to enrich minds. The fair runs from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and attendees can stay for the entire day or just attend relevant sessions. Vendors at the fair will include in-home care solutions, senior living communities, financial service providers, hearing assistance centers, and many more service providers. Dr. Steven Glickman, PhD, will deliver a keynote address titled, “Our Connection to Music: A Rock and Roll Love Story.” Breakout sessions include presentations on Medicare Part B, aging in-home, Alzheimer’s and dementia, downsizing, nutrition, and legal and financial issues, including estate planning. Two particularly interesting offerings are “Coffee with the Police Chief” and a presentation from the Broomfield Public Library on “Connecting with Family via Technology.” Those who would like to learn about programs like FaceTime or Skype to keep in touch with family, should plan to attend this session.

The Living in Balance Senior Resource Fair is open to all ages. Tickets are $8 for Broomfield residents and $10 for non-residents and include a hot breakfast and lunch, plus door prizes and giveaways. Pre-registration is required; call 303-464-5526 or stop in at the Broomfield Community Center to register. Transportation and in-home care is also available to assist attendees. KIDS

SPORT

CONCUSSIONS WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

The Center of Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 1.6 million to 3.8 million concussions occur each year. The CDC defines a concussion as a “type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, jolt to the head or a hit to the body that cause the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth.” This sudden movement can actually damage the brain cells and create chemical changes in the brain. Many of these head injuries are mild and children can recover completely however, some effects can be serious.

22

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2016

T

he Sports Concussion Institute states that 5-10% of athletes will experience a concussion in any given sport season. Football is the most common sport with the risk for males, and soccer is the most common sport risk for females. Most concussions will occur during games versus practices. Regardless of what sport your child plays, it is important to understand the signs, symptoms, treatment, and prevention of concussions. According to the CDC, concussion signs can include not being able to recall events prior to or after a hit or fall, appearing dazed or stunned, forgetting an instruction, being confused or unsure of what is happening in the game, moving clumsily, answering questions slowly, losing consciousness, or showing mood, behavior or personality changes. If your child tells you that they are nauseous, light bothers them, they have a headache, they have blurry or double vision or feel dizzy or not quite right, they should be evaluated. Symptoms usually show up soon after the concussion has occurred but some symptoms might not show up for a few hours or days. Continue to check for any of the listed symptoms for several days after the injury and if the symptoms get worse, take your child to see their doctor or to the emergency room. Dr. Joel Gonzales, an orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Associates in Denver agreed that the most common signs include, “headaches, blurry vision, general feeling of ‘fogginess,’ and any amnesia.” When a parent or coach is immediately evaluating a player, he advises them to ask the athlete what they had for breakfast. If the child is old enough ask them what day/ month/year it is. Ask them their birthday or if they remember the play that just happened. The most common treatment for concussion is rest. Children should be symptom free before returning to play, which can take days or even several weeks. Immediately following the injury, children should rest both physically and cognitively. Children who return too soon can have increased risk of further injury. A child who has had a concussion is at a higher risk of having another concussion and the effects of repeat concussions multiply. Dr. Gonzales stressed that the best treatment is rest. “Cut out TV and electronics, no aerobic activity.” It is best to have a doctor clear the child for return to sport. He believes that “generally any high school player who sustains a concussion should not re-

turn to the game that day no matter what.” Usually they are clear when they are completely symptom free with exertion. One of the best preventions for concussions is having your child play with an organization that is committed to injury prevention. Coaches should be trained in first aid and CPR and know the proper use of equipment. Coaches should always enforce the rules of the sport and not allow unsafe play such as striking another athlete in the head, using their head or helmet to contact another player, attempting to check, tackle or collide with another player, or trying to injure another athlete. Properly fitted helmets can help protect your child from a head injury but cannot always necessarily prevent a concussion. For older children’s sports, the CDC recommends that organized sports have an action plan that teaches athletes ways to lower their chances of getting a concussion and encourages children to tell their coaches they might have a concussion even if they do not think it is serious. Sports have many benefits for children but certain precautions should be taken to make sure your child can continue to reap the benefits of organized sports for many years. If your child has suffered a concussion or you suspect such an injury, be as proactive and cautious as possible. Always consult with a medical professional for diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment.

SILVER SNEAKERS FOSTERS GOOD HEALTH THROUGH LATER YEARS By Elizabeth Buckingham

Staying physically active, especially as we age, is essential for reducing injury risk, stabilizing our mental health, and improving our longevity. It’s also important to our social support network. Many older Americans – especially if they haven’t been physically active in their younger years - think that joining a gym or other fitness program might be too expensive, too intimidating or too challenging, and Silver Sneakers wants to change those misconceptions.

B

roomfield has an active Silver Sneakers community with activities and classes at the Broomfield Community Center as well as the Paul Derda Recreation Center. One of the hallmarks of the nationwide Silver Sneakers program is the wide variety of different fitness activities offered. From gentle yoga to line dancing to cardio, you will absolutely find something you love – and the key to sticking with any fitness program is finding an activity that you love, rather than one you suffer through. Silver Sneakers focuses on basic movement fundamentals but is specifically designed to provide the physical skills needed for older adults to perform a range of daily tasks. Classes might emphasize cardio health, range of motion, flexibility, strength or balance; they’re accessible to all ability levels and each class includes a “chair option,” according to Veronica Mueller, recreational fitness supervisor for the city and county of Broomfield. “Every Silver Sneakers class includes a chair so that regardless of your physical ability or range of motion that day, we can accommodate you,” she said. Silver Sneakers participants aren’t limited to just classes with the Silver Sneakers label, either. Fancy a game of pickleball? A few laps in the pool? Maybe a fun, invigorating Zumba or Jazzercise class? New member meetings are held twice per month, with a newcomers’ coffee gathering offered once each month. Recreation center staff also offer weight room orientations and fitness assessments. “Our goal is to provide all the tools and support needed to keep older adults fit and healthy,” said Mueller. “We’re focused on fall and injury prevention, but we have a strong social community too.” Silver Sneakers isn’t only about physical fitness, but about emotional and mental fitness as well. Loneliness and isolation often strike older adults harder than the general population, and it’s essential to stay active, busy and social; Silver Sneakers offers the chance to improve physical health while maintaining a strong social network at the same time. Numerous studies have shown that learning new skills may stave off age-related decline, such as learning a few twosteps in a beginning line dancing class! Silver Sneakers is included in more than 70 different nationwide health care plans. It’s simple to determine your eligibility through www.silversneakers. com or through a letter from your insurance provider. The helpful staff at the Broomfield Community Center is also happy to assist in determining eligibility.

Chatauqua in Broomfield: ‘Grangers from the Grave’

T

he popular Broomfield Depot Museum Friends history speaker series concludes for the year on Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the historic Broomfield Crescent Grange at 7901 West 120th Avenue. This month’s presentation is in keeping with October and a Halloween theme when Michelle Pearson and her students present a Chautauqua-style performance entitled “Grangers from the Grave.” There is no admission charge, but donations are appreciated and will go toward the Friends’ programs and restoration efforts. Chatauqua performances began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in rural American communities like Broomfield. They brought entertainment and culture to these communities, with speakers, teachers, music, entertainment, and presentations from specialists of the day. Local preservation students from the Colorado Youth Summit will assume the chatauqua roles to enlighten audience members about early members of Broomfield’s Crescent Grange who are buried in Broomfield’s Lakeview Cemetery. Last year’s Halloween-oriented presentation by Pearson and her students was a hit, and this year’s offering promises more of the same. Michelle Pearson currently teaches geography and social studies at Century Middle School. She was named Colorado Teacher of the Year in 2011. During her career, she has spent time with social studies and language arts teachers across Colorado as part of the History Colorado Preservation Programs team. Through the Preserve America Youth Summit, Pearson works with youth, educators, and communities across the state to help them understand their cultural resources and work toward preserving them. She earned her B.A. in History, Geography, Education, and Historic Preservation from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va., and an M.S. Ed. in Technology Integration from Walden University. The speaker series is a partnership among the Broomfield Depot Museum Friends, the City and County of Broomfield Cultural Affairs Division, and the Depot Museum. For more information about the Broomfield Depot Museum Friends, please visit: www.broomfielddepotfriends.org. For information about the museum, please call 303-460-6824 or visit the museum’s website at wwwbroomfielddepotmuseum.org. The Museum is open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and is located at 2201 West 10th Avenue in Broomfield. There is no admission charge, but donations are appreciated.

Raises Funds for Senior Resources Programs enior Resources of Broomfield (SRB) is again hosting a special community event that will put the “fun” back in fundraiser. Time is running out to make reservations for Saturday, Oct. 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The ‘Masquerade Ball 2016 Autumn Gala’ will be at the Denver Marriott Westminster ballroom and again brings Hazel Miller and her band for the evening’s entertainment and dancing after dinner. SRB’s aim is to raise funds for senior programs that comport with the organization’s mission – “enhancing quality of life for seniors” who are residents of Broomfield. Harken back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance when masquerade balls were sumptuous affairs celebrating events in the royal courts of France and Italy, especially Venice, where their popularity grew as public festivals. The fun was heightened by the anonymous intrigue of elaborate ‘masques’ worn by the revelers. Masquerade dances came to America in the 18th Century and often became known as the parties not to miss. That is the goal of SRB organizers for the 2016 Broomfield version. Costumes aren’t required for this Masquerade Ball, but masks that evoke the Venetian style of the event will be given to every party-goer at check-in so the fun can include guessing who’s who. Giving opportunities will be plentiful during the evening. There will be paddle raisers, silent and live auctions, the popular “heads

or tails” game, and new to this year’s event is an opportunity to purchase collectible bracelets designed especially to be reminiscent of the evening’s theme. Opportunities are also still available to become a sponsor of the evening. There are various levels from Platinum to Bronze and outright donations are also welcome, of course. SRB planners encourage corporate citizens as well as clubs, organizations, families, and friends to come together at tables of 10 for a night of revelry and “grown up” Halloween fun. To make reservations or secure a sponsorship, phone 303-882-2736 or visit www.broomfieldseniorresources.org Cost is $99 per person. Funds raised at the Masquerade Ball will go toward programs for seniors in Broomfield. SRB partners with the City and County of Broomfield Senior Services staff by raising money to help pay for unexpected medical, dental or vision needs, durable medical equipment like wheel chairs and walkers, and even some handyman services. Funds also help with transportation, Meals on Wheels and the congregate meals at the senior center. The goal is to keep seniors independent and in their homes as long as possible. The SRB funds are used for low income seniors after all other possible sources are exhausted.

FROM

By Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO, Broomfield Chamber of Commerce

BIG DECISIONS We all have some big decisions coming up this fall. Our country is divided. Hopefully most of us will have our minds made up before the end of October; do you love or hate Candy Corn? National Candy Corn Day is October 30th. We as a people are divided. Or, if you are like the comedian Lewis Black, each year in the fall, you think you love it and then eat it before remembering you hate it. The corn that tastes like candy was created by George Renninger of the Wunderle Candy Company in the late 1800s. At the turn of the century, The Goelitz Confectionary Company began production and focused on selling it during the summer calling it, “Chicken Feed.” They marketed it as “Something worth crowing for,” using the image of a rooster. The company that makes Jelly Belly Jelly Beans, Wegmans, has been the longest maker of candy corn with their first batch sold in 1898. They are now in their fifth generation of production. Here are some fun facts: The flavor of the tri-colored candy is actually meant to taste like marshmallow. It is not vegan and usually contains one or more animal-based ingredients such as confectioner’s glaze and gelatin. Candy Corn is fat free and gluten free. 20 pieces will earn you 140 calories on My Fitness Pal. You may not want to schedule your dental visits around this time of year, as one serving has more than 30 grams of sugar. Don’t just pour it in a bowl. There’s a plethora of pins on Pinterest and a voluminous number of videos on YouTube of recipes and craft projects using candy corn. So, if you love candy corn then you might want to make Candy Corn Oreo Cheesecake for the kids and a Candy Corn Martini for yourself. Or if you hate Candy Corn you can always make a Candy Corn Garland or a Candy Corn Wreath. Thanks to National Candy Corn Day we now know that Lewis Black was not correct when he said that all candy corn that was ever made was made in 1911.
