FROM THE
Angels in Broomfield
Who Deserves Your Thanks?
F
all is here and Broomfield is bustling in October! This issue is packed full of information about special events and activities happening all month long in our community. From fall festivals and Halloween fun, to music and fundraising events from multiple local organizations, there is something for everyone. Here at the magazine we are always looking a little bit ahead and into the next month – and even the month after that. This November we are trying a new holidayinspired feature called, “Angels in Broomfield.” Basically we want to give you, our readers and fellow Broomfielders, a chance to recognize and appreciate a friend or neighbor who makes life better for others in Broomfield. There are several awards and recognition programs throughout the community designed to honor and appreciate people who make Broomfield a better place – often in very visible ways. We are envisioning something a little different here. Do you know someone who selflessly gives to the community? Do you have a friend who you admire for their commitment to a cause or organization? Does your friend help others in the neighborhood and simply make their own corner of the world a better place? Is there someone who inspires you with their generosity of time, treasure or talent? We are looking for those quiet, unsung local angels who embody giving and deserve a round of thanks. We will feature as many short appreciations as space allows. Inclusion will be determined by The Broomfielder magazine staff.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2017
Community Reading Program Kicks Off in October By Kristen Beckman
This month, Broomfield residents will unite in the annual One Book, One Broomfield program, in which the community collectively reads one book and explores its themes through a variety of events.
T
his year’s book is “Dark Matter,” by Colorado author Blake Crouch, whose “Wayward Pines” trilogy was recently adapted for television. A science fiction title, “Dark Matter” is a different kind of story than some of the books previously featured in the One Book program, said Gigi Yang, manager of adult services at the Broomfield Library. “With growing interest in STEM and technology, it is a highly relevant and timely topic for the Broomfield community,” said Yang. “’Dark Matter’ is a suspenseful thriller that introduces some intriguing ideas about parallel universes and quantum mechanics. At the same time, it’s a very accessible human story about life choices and what we value.” Planning for the program begins early in the year when a committee of library staff, citizens, volunteers from the Broomfield Library Friends Foundation, the library board, and the mayor begin reading about 30 books nominated by library staff and through patron suggestions to ultimately choose which book the community will read. Criteria for selection include the length of the book, publication date, literary merit, and relevance to the Broomfield community. Last year, 631 people read Broomfield’s One Book selection, which was “Grandma Gatewood’s Walk” by Ben Montgomery. The library hopes to engage even more residents this year with programs that accommodate up to 820 participants. “While our biggest hope is that many, many people in the community will read the book and engage in discussions with their neighbors and friends, we also offer a month of events at the library that encourage people to explore facets of the book more deeply and connect with new people and new ideas,” said Yang. The library has planned a variety of events to engage readers in various themes of the book, including a history of quantum mechanics on October 5, escape room challenges on October 7, and a screening of Groundhog Day October 10. The program will culminate with an author presentation on November 2 at the Broomfield Auditorium. “For ‘Dark Matter,’ we picked the Chicago setting, quantum mechanics, life choices, and suspense. Some programs are informative — such as the presentations on quantum mechanics and Chicago/Denver architecture,” said Yang. “Others are entertaining, like the Escape Room, which creates the tense atmosphere and feeling of suspense throughout ‘Dark Matter.’” Programming also centers on a primary theme of the book, which is the question “Are you happy with your life?” Hands-on workshops will allow participants to explore their own lives, said Yang. A workshop October 8 will allow participants to write memoirs and life reflections, and a community art project running during the entire program will allow participants to contribute their thoughts on turning points in their lives, she said. The library has about 80 copies of the book available for checkout, and residents can also choose CD audiobook or downloadable electronic versions. Registration is required for many One Book events. Visit www.broomfield.org for more information.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2017
Tax Trap in Older Estate Plans! Offered by Dolan & Associates, P.C. Based on today’s tax laws, individuals who die in 2017 and have less than $5,490,000 at the time of their death will not pay death taxes. As a result, most Americans no longer need to be concerned about death taxes. However, because so many Americans were facing death taxes in the past, many people have built death tax protection into their estate plans. It would seem to reason that if you no longer have to pay the tax, then these provisions would not apply. That is not the case. The provisions control regardless of whether or not the person actually has to pay death tax. These plans often involve the creation of a "Family Trust" or "Bypass Trust" for the surviving spouse. While these trusts can provide additional protections on top of protection from taxation, these trusts can create income tax disadvantages. There is an income tax advantage to dying. However, older estate plans often forfeit that income tax advantage in exchange for death tax protection. Now that the death tax is not a factor, maximizing the income tax advantage on your death should be a focus of the tax planning portion of your estate plan. Individuals who no longer face death taxation should take steps to update their estate plan to address the income tax disadvantage created in their prior plan. This situation is a classic example of why you should update your estate plan regularly. Your estate plan should be maintained, just like your car, if the plan is to work effectively. Maintenance is critical to effective estate planning. When choosing an estate planning attorney, you should look closely at their maintenance process. Without maintenance your plan could break down, and as we know, that always happens at the worst possible time. If you would like to learn more about an effective estate planning process that is producing results for families, visit www.EstatePlansThatWork.com.

f we’re looking for good news on the breast cancer front, we can find it in the tools and technologies we now have for earlier diagnosis. Such advances are vitally important since breast cancer is not only the most common cancer among women in the United States, but the second most likely to cause death. The challenge is to find it early when it can be treated more easily and with greater success. The most common tool for breast cancer screening is mammography. This X-ray of your breast tissue can detect cancer in its first stages, even before there are any symptoms. Technological advances in mammography have resulted in the use of two-dimensional (2D) digital imaging instead of film and have allowed for equivalent images using significantly lower doses of radiation. The introduction of three-dimensional (3D) mammography—also known as digital breast tomosynthesis or “tomo”—improves both our screening and diagnostic capabilities. Studies in both the U.S. and Europe confirm a higher rate of early detection when 2D and 3D are used together. How do 2D and 3D mammograms differ? From the patient’s perspective, it is basically the same experience. The breast is compressed between two plates as lowdose x-rays are taken from the front and side. With 3D tomo, which takes only a few seconds longer, breast images are created in “slices” from many different angles. This enables the radiologist reading the mammogram to detect abnormalities and changes in the breast more easily. Also, viewing difficulty caused by overlapping tissue is eliminated, and denser breast tissue can be visualized more clearly. Check with your insurer in advance to determine if the modest additional cost of 3D tomo is covered. As evidence is collected, breast cancer screening recommendations can change. It can be confusing to know the right time to start screening and how often to get screened, and your internet search may produce conflicting answers. It is important to understand that when recommendations are made for screening they are made for people who have an “average” risk of cancer. Thus, having a conversation with your health care provider regarding breast cancer screening can help individualize your screening. Start this conversation at age 40 or earlier, if you have any risk factors. Breast cancer screening is an important aspect of your health maintenance. You can also make your experience less stressful by obtaining your mammogram at a facility that is part of a cancer “network,” meaning that your information is easily accessible to other dedicated breast cancer professionals who follow national cancer guidelines.

DOZENS OF OUTINGS PER MONTH OFFERED THROUGH BROOMFIELD RECREATION’S
ACTIVE ADULT TRIPS By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
Broomfield is extremely fortunate to have numerous activities for active adults through the Broomfield Recreation Department. Active adult activities include athletics, dance, fitness, special events, and trips. The growing Active Adult Trip Program led by Kim Hollingsworth, the Recreation Coordinator for Active Adults Programs, now offers 60 trips a quarter!
T
he term active adult technically refers to anyone 21 and older, but Ms. Hollingsworth said that the average age of those who participate in the trips is between 51-100 years old. There are a variety of trips to participate in, including simple and short trips like trying out new breakfast spots and fine dining restaurants once a month. Longer day trips include touring the Celestial Seasonings headquarters in Boulder, attending a Rockies Games, visiting the Royal Gorge or going into the mountains to see the fall colors. The majority of the registration prices include transportation to and from the venue as well as the entry fee, if required. Food is often not included but available for purchase. If a resident is not able to drive, arrangements can be made to pick the person up at their house and take them to the community center to join the rest of the group for the trip. These trips are often the only way some residents, who are not able to drive, leave their house on a regular basis. Ms. Hollingsworth is currently trying to program for the up and coming Baby Boomers who she sees as wanting more exciting and extended travel trips. For these trips, the Recreation Department works with a travel agency, Premier World Discovery, which specializes in senior tours to coordinate logistics including flights and accommodations. Upcoming extended travel trips include a 9-day trip to see the fall colors and lighthouses of the Great Lakes in Chicago and Mackinac Island in Michigan, as well as a six-day trip to Branson, Memphis, and Nashville for a “Music Cities Christmas.” The extended trip program may be expanded in the future. None of the trips are age specific but a trip exertion scale has been established so participants are aware beforehand how much, sitting, walking, and elevation might be involved. When Ms. Hollingsworth is planning these trips, she spends a lot of time researching what is age appropriate, fun, safe, and affordable. She also looks at current trends in travel and what has been really popular in years past. If a trip was full and there was a long waitlist, she might consider planning the same trip again since everyone probably did not get to go. The trips are open to non-Broomfield residents but residents do get a discount and a two-week advance priority period for registering. Kim said the best part about her job is when patrons return from a trip and let her know that they really enjoyed it and personally thank her. If you or your Broomfield family and friends are looking for some great things to do in Colorado and beyond, check out all the great active adults trips being planned! FITNESS PROGRAMS for Aging Well in Broomfield By Bette Erickson
It’s estimated that 10,000 people per day turn 65 years old. Aging in America is more appealing than ever. Here in Broomfield, Baby Boomers have healthy options and dozens of opportunities to stay fit, active, and vital.
R
ated in Money magazine’s 2016 Best Places to Live in America, Broomfield prioritizes residents’ well being and safety. Residents have access to two recreation centers, more than 8,000 acres of open space, and 281 miles of trails, that’s more trail miles than paved streets in the city. Senior Services, an important division of the City and County of Broomfield, serves hundreds of residents and non-residents through its Healthy Hearts and SilverSneakers® programs, among others. SilverSneakers® is a fitness program offered at no-cost to eligible participants that is helping aging residents shatter stereotypes by staying healthy and active. In Broomfield, SilverSneakers® includes nearly-unlimited access to participating gyms and fitness centers. Free weights, stationary bicycles, treadmills, pools, instructor-led fitness classes, and other amenities are offered at both the Paul Derda Recreation Center and the Broomfield Community Center. Numerous health insurance providers offer SilverSneakers® as part of their wellness programs. A quick phone call to your insurance provider may yield a free gym membership and access to the SilverSneakers® program. New member meetings are routinely offered at both the BCC and the PDRC from September through December and into the following year. If your insurance provider includes access to the SilverSneakers® program, call 303-464-5526 for information about the next scheduled SilverSneakers® New Member orientation meeting. Healthy Hearts is another great opportunity for residents aging well. Healthy Hearts includes both the Healthy Hearts Walking Program and the complementary Healthy Hearts Lunches. The Healthy Hearts lunch program is sponsored by Senior Resources of Broomfield, Inc. and focuses on the importance of proper diet and exercise. Twice each month, on the first and third
Wednesdays, the Lakeshore Café at the BCC, at 280 Spader Way, offers a Healthy Hearts meal for seniors who are residents for $2, and a meal for nonresident seniors for $4.50. Participants under 60 years old are charged $5. Reservations are required. Senior-specific nutrition and wellness information is available during the luncheon with an educational topic presented, sometimes including speakers. Additional information is available by calling 303-464-5526. The Healthy Hearts Walking Program, which kicked off on September 5 and wraps up November 9, is an opportunity for adults 55 years old and older to participate in accruing miles equivalent to a Walkabout through Australia. From 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday at the PDRC, 13201 Lowell Blvd., senior participants warm up, stretch, and walk on the track at their own pace. While no registration is required for the Healthy Hearts Walking Program, attendees who are not SilverSneakers® or PDRC annual pass holders are asked to pay $1 per visit. Staff is on-site to assist during the Healthy Hearts Walking Program and at the completion of the session, attendees celebrate with a party. Kim Hollingsworth, CTRS, Broomfield’s Recreation Coordinator – Active Adult Programs, is the staff contact for the Healthy Hearts Walking Program at 303-464-5536. For information about Broomfield’s SilverSneakers® program or Healthy Hearts, call the Broomfield Community Center at 303-464-5500 or the Paul Derda Recreation Center at 303-460-6900, or visit www.BroomfieldRecreation.com.

BROOMFIELD’S 5TH ANNUAL
LIVING IN BALANCE – R E S O U R C E
F A I R –
WELCOMES ALL AGES By Bette Erickson
Here in Broomfield County we have plenty of opportunities to age well and continue our vibrant, active lifestyle. It’s no accident that our senior residents are some of the most successful and active in the Denver metro area. City planners take into account lifestyle elements contributing to successful aging when creating retail, residential, recreational, and business developments.
I
n addition, Broomfield Senior Services helps residents age better by providing information and activities, identifying gaps in services offered, all the while advocating for older adults and their caregivers. We’re fortunate to live in a community that prioritizes services for the aging and their caregivers. Lighting up Broomfield’s Community Center again this year is the city’s popular and affordable Living in Balance Resource Fair from 8:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Friday, October 13, at 280 Spader Way 303-464-5500. The event, that includes breakout sessions in the various Community Center conference rooms and dozens of vendors in the gymnasium, features educational exhibits, coffee with Broomfield’s Police Chief Gary Creager, functional medicine presentations, and more. Providing high-quality and relevant information, tools, and resources – there’s something of value offered for everyone. Some 50 vendors will be in attendance and include breakout workshops such as lifelong learning, physical fitness, will-planning and will-making, genealogy, and demystifying Medicare. Vendors representing important topics ranging from mobility and transportation to legal advice and assistance will be on-hand to speak with attendees. Senior needs such as home and yard maintenance, caregiver support, and opportunities to engage are some other topics that will be addressed at Broomfield’s Living in Balance event.
InnovAge in-home senior care will be onsite to answer questions, as will other caregiver services, assisted living, and skilled nursing representatives. There are no age-restrictions for interested participants. The event is targeted toward adults and their caregivers planning for the future or looking to enhance existing services. You may choose to stay for the duration of the resource fair or drop-in to chat with vendors and/or view presentations that interest you. Transportation is available for residents 60-years-old or older by reservation (call 303-464-5534) and qualifying in-home assistance may be provided for caregivers and their loved one (call 303-464-5529 for information). Broomfield and its partner organizations, including Health and Human Services, Recreation Services, and Senior Services, continually evaluate how well existing resources, plans, regulations, programs, and community design features serve its residents who chose to age in place. And the Broomfield Living in Balance Resource Fair is a valuable asset in reaching that goal. The Keynote Speaker, Active Minds, is slated for 1:00 p.m., following lunch. A representative from the organization will do a presentation on "Denver Women in History," concluding the event near 2:00 p.m. The day of activities/speakers/vendors cost $8/resident or $10/non-resident – and includes hot breakfast and boxed lunch, or attend for only $4 without the meals.
For information about the Living in Balance resource fair, go to page 57 in the fall Broomfield Recreation Services Program Brochure or call 303–464–5526. Pre-registration is required.

Annual FISH Luncheon Focuses on Gifts of Gratitude By Allison Eichner
B
roomfield’s food bank, FISH, is still celebrating the opening of its new building at 6 Garden Center and its expanded services, and the organization’s upcoming annual fundraising lunch on October 27 will be focused on supporting FISH’s growth and meeting the resulting community needs. Although FISH only moved a few buildings down from its original location, operations have drastically changed for volunteers and clients. The food pantry has switched from a system where clients order their food and come pick it up, to a self-shop marketplace. The marketplace features walk-in refrigerators, color-coded pantry shelves, and a custom cart return, all in an effort to provide clients with an authentic shopping experience. With more room and more storage FISH can now serve even more neighbors in need. Since the new location opening, families are now allowed to come get food twice a month resulting in a 47% increase in food being distributed. FISH’s outreach also has grown significantly in our community, specifically in emergency financial assistance. Along with being a food bank, FISH provides emergency financial assistance to those in need for rent, utilities, and transportation. In the last 10 months the number of clients seeking financial help has tripled. Because of such rapid growth, FISH is, now more than
ever, reliant on the support of the Broomfield community. To keep up with the increasing food output and keep the shelves full, volunteers in the marketplace are working to build their Adopt-A-Shelf program. Like an ongoing food drive, when a group or family adopts a shelf they are responsible for stocking and supporting that one food item continually. A shelf can be adopted anywhere from one month to a year by a family, sports team, neighborhood, or business. AdoptA-Shelf is crucial to providing consistency for the clients that come to FISH and ensuring that uncommonly donated items are always in stock. Shelves can be supported simply through a monetary donation or by donating the food itself. As of August 1, the marketplace was most in need of cooking oil, baking items, cereal, hair care products, and deodorant. On Friday, October 27, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. FISH is hosting its annual Harvest of Hope Luncheon at the Omni Interlocken Hotel. This year’s “Gifts of Gratitude” lunch will feature a program highlighting FISH’s success in the past year, how our community is still in need, and, most importantly, how to help. Harvest of Hope is by far FISH’s largest fundraiser of the year. There is no cost to attend this inspiring event; guests are invited to donate however much they choose at the end of the program.
For more information on attending the Harvest of Hope, details on Adopt-A-Shelf, and other ways to get involved with FISH, visit www.broomfieldfish.org.

Words from the President:
The Silent Generation Advocacy for Broomfield’s Seniors in Need, Today and Tomorrow In recent decades, Broomfield’s business community and residential population has experienced marked and healthy growth driven by large corporations settling and expanding in the area and more and more people discovering our desirable community. From the outside looking in, the general picture of our community is quite comfortable. But with growth, comes growing pains, and for some of our aging friends and neighbors, with the passage of time comes discomfort beyond the normal physical effects of aging. Broomfield’s older adult population has increased over the past decade from 5,446 in 2005 to 10,650 in 2015, essentially doubling in size. In 2015, 16.4% of Broomfield’s population was 60 years of age or older. Broomfield’s residents aged 60 and older will grow 28% between 2015 and 2020 and are projected to reach 13,630 by 2020. Some of these Broomfield neighbors are low income seniors who have unmet needs. You might be surprised to know, for instance, that in 2016, an estimated 11 percent of patrons at local food banks were seniors. Senior Resources of Broomfield (SRB) strives to address the needs of this growing population through fundraising, advocacy, volunteerism, and representation. But the need is growing and so is the call for help. In partnership with the City of Broomfield and the Broomfield community, SRB works to improve the quality of life for seniors and their families by helping them meet unexpected needs through programs including, but not limited to, Meals on Wheels, handyman repair and renovation, medical equipment loans, special needs such as hearing, dental, and vision expenses, and other requests funded on a case-by-case basis. SRB is particularly focused on the nutritional, medical, and social needs of our senior population and strives to support this group in a manner that not only fulfills these needs but also allows seniors to live independently as possible for as long as possible. You may have a family member who has been helped by one of these programs in the past; more likely you or someone you know might need this help in the future. You can help SRB ensure we can answer the call by including us in your annual giving.
We have heard about the greatest generation, the baby boomers, generation X, and millennials but why is it we don’t talk about the Silent Generation?
T
he Silent Generation refers to people who were born between 1925 and 1945. There are several theories as to where the term “Silent Generation” originated. The children who grew up during this time worked very hard and kept quiet. At the time it was commonly expected that children should be seen and not heard. This generation grew up in conditions complicated by war and economic downturn. From 1929 until 1939, Americans suffered through the world economic crisis known as the Great Depression. It was estimated that more than 24% of Americans were unemployed. In addition to being children of war, the Silent Generation also made up a majority of fighters in the Korean War, which was fought from 1950 until 1953 and led to the division of Korea into North and South Korea The silent generation brought the strong work ethic of their parents into the factories of industrialized society. This generation believes that promotions and advancement should be the result of tenure and proven productivity that has stood the test of time. They distrust flash-inthe-pan success. Many of the seniors in the Broomfield community are from this generation and many times I ask myself, why a lot of seniors don’t ask for help, hence the phrase, “Silent Generation.” As caregivers, we have to be vigilant to the needs of individuals who do not speak up for themselves. Does someone you know fall into this category and have special unmet needs? If so, please tell us! The fundraising efforts of Senior Resources of Broomfield help support nutritional, medical, and social needs of our rising senior population. Help us make sure their needs are heard and, where possible, addressed.
Thank you for your help, Kathy Hoff President Senior Resources of Broomfield
