FROM THE

Broomfield Days Tips Saturday, September 19, is one of my favorite days of the year! Broomfield Days! As someone who has attended more than a few Broomfield Days celebrations, this year I thought I would offer a few insider tips for navigating the day. So... in no particular order, here are 10 tips to consider.

PUBLISHER Mike Garrison

EDITOR Tina Eichner

1. Parking. I recommend parking in the residential areas either to the north or the south of Midway Park and walking in. A few extra steps will be worth an easy exit when you are ready to go home at the end of the day. 2. What to bring. Bring water, cash, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a bag to carry whatever you acquire throughout the day, and be sure and wear comfortable shoes. Be prepared for a day on your feet and in the sun. While there are several bathroom facilities available in Midway Park during Broomfield Days, it is always a good idea to “go” before leaving home to avoid the lines. 3. Parade viewing. It can be very crowded as you head down Midway and get closer to the fire station. I think a great viewing spot is in the area right around Nativity of Our Lord Church. For optimum parade viewing, you will want to be in a less congested area, especially if you have little ones who are trying to catch candy during the parade. 4. Come hungry. Broomfield Days provides a cornucopia of sights and sounds and smells. The smells are primarily from the delicious foods from many of Broomfield’s restaurants. Take this chance to sample some new grub. 5. Be “Green” literate. The city strives to host a zero waste event. Each recycling and composting station will be attended and will provide instructions for how to dispose of your disposables. Try not to “mess” it up. 6. Visit the beer garden hosted by The Broomfield Chamber of Commerce. You must know that Broomfield now has four of its own microbreweries! Well all four will be serving up beer at this year’s event. Visit throughout the day and enjoy your own local beer tour. 7. Stroll the trade fair and exhibits. I always think of Broomfield Days as the very early unofficial kick-off to holiday shopping. It is a great place to get some unique ideas. 8. Be sure to visit all of the community, city, and non-profit exhibits. If you want to learn about Broomfield’s great organizations, this is your best chance to talk directly to the people who make them tick! 9. Make sure a see a few things: Dock Dogs, the various performing stages, the car show, and the carnival rides just to start. And don’t forget to stop by the grand stand and wave hello to Mr. Paul Derda! 10. Come by and say hello to The Broomfielder magazine! We will be there all day and look forward to meeting you! For more information and insights, read our Broomfield Days section in this issue on pages 24-34 and visit www.Broomfield.org for the latest updates leading up to the event.

Thanks for reading, Tina Eichner, Editor

HAPPENINGS

SENIOR RESOURCES 2015 AUTUMN GALA OCTOBER

23

For an enjoyable and worthwhile evening, plan now to attend the Senior Resources of Broomfield (SRB) Autumn Gala – and help fund local senior programs and services in the process. Mark your calendar for Friday, Oct. 23, from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. for a memorable evening at the Omni Interlocken Resort Hotel and Conference Center. There will be games, auctions, dinner, and dancing to the Hazel Miller Band. Joining SRB as sponsor for the event, to date, is New West Physicians. Additional sponsors are welcome and encouraged. Headliner for the evening, Hazel Miller is not just a great singer, she has been called “a force of nature!” with a voice that has been lauded as “stunning, moving, and powerful.” SRB’s purpose is “enhancing the quality of life for seniors.” It is a 501(c)3, tax exempt organization. Its programs help seniors meet many basic and unexpected needs. SRB volunteers and fundraising efforts support nutritional programs like Meals on Wheels, congregate meals at the Senior Center, and the Healthy Hearts program. SRB-supported community service programs provide special assistance for medical and dental needs, blizzard bags and handyman services, among other services. For more information, sponsorships or tickets, visit www.broomfieldseniorresources.org or call 303-882-2736.

Backpack Safety Tips By Darbi Invergo, DO

I

t’s hard to believe summer is winding down and school will be back in session. When creating your back to school lists, you might want to put a little extra thought into the backpack you choose for your child. As helpful as backpacks are, they can also strain muscles and joints and may cause back pain if they’re too heavy or are used incorrectly. Although students may do a variety of things that can lead to back pain – increased participation in sports, poor posture while sitting, and long periods of inactivity – some kids may experience back pain simply because they are using the wrong backpack or lugging around too much weight. According to the American Chiropractic Association, a backpack should weigh no more than 10 percent of a child’s weight. Girls and younger kids may be especially at risk for backpack-related injuries because they’re smaller and may carry loads that are heavier in proportion to their body weight. Despite the potential problems that come with a backpack, they can be a great tool for students when used properly. But before you buy that trendy new backpack your child has been begging you for, consider looking for a backpack that follows these tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP):

• A LIGHTWEIGHT PACK, that doesn’t add a lot of weight to your child’s load (for example, even though leather packs look cool, they weigh more than traditional canvas backpacks) • TWO WIDE, PADDED SHOULDER STRAPS; straps that are too narrow can dig into shoulders • A PADDED BACK, which not only provides increased comfort, but also protects kids from being poked by sharp edges on objects (pencils, rulers, notebooks, etc.) inside the pack • A WAIST BELT, which helps to distribute the weight more evenly across the body • MULTIPLE COMPARTMENTS, which can help distribute the weight more evenly

Lowell Boulevard Project Update By Elizabeth Buckingham

Construction-related traffic can be frustrating, especially when the delays are close to home and seem to take forever. Did you know that the city’s website contains detailed information about all construction and roadwork projects currently occurring in Broomfield? The City and County of Broomfield does a phenomenal job of keeping the public updated on city construction projects at www.broomfield.org.

T

he city, along with contractor Hamilton Construction, is currently working on a major road project on Lowell Boulevard. This project will complete Lowell Boulevard as a four-lane arterial from the recently completed 120th Avenue intersection to East Midway Boulevard; turn lanes and landscaping on Lowell Boulevard from West 120th Avenue to East Midway are also included in the project. The project will also complete several other important improvements consistent with Broomfield’s Transportation Drainage and Trails Master Plan. In addition to expanding Lowell Boulevard, the project includes constructing a dedicated right turn

20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2015

at East Midway, completing curb sidewalks and landscaping along the Metzger Farm Open Space, completing a bridge over the frequently flooded Nissen Channel near 120th Avenue, providing a trail underpass to the Metzger Farm Open Space, and upgrading water and storm sewer facilities on Lowell Boulevard. Dan Feller, capital improvement project manager for the city, wants the public to know that Broomfield, in partnership with Hamilton Construction, is “working diligently to complete these road works safely and efficiently.” His team views the project “from three perspectives: quality, budget, and schedule,” and takes all those factors into consideration when scheduling workers and determining project timelines. Unfortunately, the extensive rain we experienced during April and May delayed the project somewhat, but a dry, warm July has made recovering from those weather delays easier. Adverse weather places additional pressure on contractors and often requires extensive rebuilding. Feller mentions that residents are often frustrated when they encounter a “cone zone” where no work appears to take place. He reminds drivers that a surveyor or engineer might be assessing a specific site, and it is easier, more consistent, and more efficient for both drivers and workers if cones are left in place for a period of time rather than relocated frequently. He also wants the public to know that Broomfield city ordinance prevents road construction before 9:00 a.m. and after 3:00 p.m. in order to efficiently manage heavy traffic during rush hours. Feller and his team “appreciate the public’s support and patience during major road construction projects.” Major components of the project are scheduled to be mostly completed by December, with additional curb, sidewalk, and median landscaping planned for spring 2016. Another separate project on Lowell north of Midway is also up for bid and has not yet been scheduled, but is expected to commence in late 2016. If you live in the area or travel through frequently for work or school commutes, it is essential to know how this construction might affect your drive. The traffic pattern on Lowell will remain in its current general configuration for several months. The work on the road base for the east half of Lowell, from 121st Avenue to 124th Avenue, continues; please watch for increased truck and work vehicle traffic in this area. The sidewalk on the west side of Lowell, between 124th and East Midway, is closed; please use Lowell’s east sidewalk in this area. The city wishes to remind residents that the Metzger Farm Open Space is still open during construction, and they encourage residents to continue to enjoy this space. Unfortunately, the trail entrance at 124th and Lowell must be closed for public safety, so please use trail entrances at 121st and Lowell and 124th and Irving. While roadwork can be aggravating, it’s important to remember that these projects make our beautiful city a safer place to live. Please remember that the speed limit throughout the construction area is 25 mph, and put your phone away while driving! This is for the safety of the workers, and expensive speeding tickets can be issued here. More information about city projects can be found at www.broomfield.org.

Feller and his team appreciate the public’s support and patience during major road construction projects.

AUTOMOBILE SAFETY AND YOUR CHILD: Properly Fitted Car Seats Are the Best Defense By Sara Farris

As soon as a baby is born, his or her parents take on the role of protector, doing whatever is possible to keep their child safe from harm. However, as soon as they leave the hospital, they place their infant in one of the most dangerous environments possible... the car. Sadly, automobile accidents are the leading cause of accidental death in children under the age of 14.

North Metro Fire’s Car Seat Inspection Program The good news is that having a properly fitted car seat is a child’s best defense, reducing the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers (Source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). However, with all of the car seat options and child safety laws, it can be overwhelming for parents to make the right choices. North Metro Fire Rescue District’s Car Seat Inspection Program serves families in Broomfield and Northglenn by providing car seat inspections and safety education on a monthly basis. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers can make an appointment to ensure their car seat is properly installed and fitted to the child by a certified child passenger safety technician at the fire station. Appointments are free to all North Metro Fire residents and are available on the first and third Saturdays of every month from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Residents can schedule their car seat inspection by calling North Metro Fire at 303-452-9910.

Safety Tips for Parents According to the law, every child under eight years of age shall be properly restrained in a child restraint system based on the manufacturer’s instructions. A child’s height, weight, and age are important factors that guide which type of restraint is appropriate to use. All children under the age of one should be in a rear-facing car seat in the back seat of the vehicle. While children should remain in a

22

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2015

rear-facing car seat for as long as possible for the best protection, parents can also opt for a forward-facing car seat once the child exceeds the height or weight limit in their rear-facing car seat. Once a child outgrows a car seat, he or she is ready to transition to a booster seat. Children ages 4 to 7 and less than 4’9” tall who use booster seats are 45% less likely to be injured in a crash compared with children who are restrained only by seat belts (Source: Colorado Dept. of Transportation). By properly following the instructions for the car seat or booster, as well as child safety laws, parents can better protect their children from injury while in the car.

Online Help There are several great resources online to help parents choose the right car seat or booster for their child and to learn about additional safety measures when in the car. Check out these federal and state resources:

BROOMFIELD DAYS!

Photo courtesy of The City and County of Broomfield

FROM THE EDITOR

As

someone who has lived in Broomfield almost my entire life, I realize that my view on the sheer awesomeness of the Broomfield Days event is a little biased. A few memories include watching my siblings march in the parade and collecting pockets of candy as a child, marching myself in front of the Broomfield High School band my senior year as a cheerleader, going to the street dances that used to be held in the 80s, riding the rides, watching the dance groups perform, walking through all of the exhibits and searching for the perfect treasure, volunteering at different non-profit booths, taking my girls to watch DockDogs, eating all of the wonderful foods, and meeting up with and catching up with friends from all stages of my childhood and adulthood in Broomfield (this is the best part!). Yes – as a native Broomfielder my view might be a bit skewed. My grandfather was a new businessman in town during the early years of the parade described on page 33. Broomfield was new and a true small town. As a teen in the 80s, much of that small town aura still existed. Then the boom started. Growth, expansion, City and County status, more growth, and more people. Broomfield is still growing. By most measurements Broomfield is not a small town anymore – yet whether you are new to the community or a lifer like me, you can’t deny that the hometown feeling here is a real thing. Broomfield Days is a manifestation of this. Many towns have annual festivals and celebrations, but Broomfield Days is yours and mine, and it is pure Broomfield. If you flip through this section you can get a preview of the Broomfield Days event and some of the things that you should see and do there, but words and photos don’t do it justice. If you have not attended, block your calendar and make a plan to be there. Bring your water bottle, grab a hat, wear your comfortable shoes, and make a day if it. Eat, drink, shop, visit, view, and soak it in. This is why you live here. Me too.

See you there!

Mayor’s Point of View Folks have inquired if the Mayor is busy during the annual Broomfield Days celebration. I decided to share some experiences from last year and let the readers decide for themselves.

F

or the Mayor, the celebration begins the day before with a golf outing benefiting the Senior Resources Services. Vance Rasmussen honored former mayor Walt Spader last year. I put together a team with former Mayors Bill Berens and Pat Quinn, and also coerced Jackie Spader to play. Our team won the mixed division. Immediately following the golf tournament I rushed over and joined my fellow Rotarians at an event showcasing a bluegrass concert and shared a few libations with Club President Kim Cooper and VP Steve Higgins, chowed down on some good BBQ, and left. I proceeded to the Annual Lions Club Bingo at the newly renovated Girl Scout Shelter, listening while Mark and Brian Clapper totally avoided calling out any of my numbers. Next morning, I was back to enjoy the Pancake Breakfast with the Lions Club and then jog over to start the Mayors Cup Running event at 8:00 a.m. sharp. Of course, Paul Derda is already on the podium recognizing Broomfield residents like Colonel Moir and his wife, Amy, and telling stories about others. I pry Paul loose from the microphone momentarily. Ready… Get set… Go… and the children and adults are off and running down the street. Next, I get escorted to the parade starting line by Recreation Director Nancy Harrold, joining my fellow Council Members on an old fire truck. Council Member Todd Schumacher shows up with a Radio Flyer wagon filled with 40 pounds of candy and totally delights the children lining Midway Boulevard. The Optimist Club does

26

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2015

a stellar job coordinating the parade each year. With the parade over, I swing by the City tent to do booth duty for citizens wanting to meet their council members and Mayor and to see our City Staff showcasing the city’s services. Next it’s imperative that I go by the Broomfield Chamber Beer Booth to make sure Tom Orlando, Glenn Plagens, and Dave Urbach are behaving. A mayoral taste test is very cold and refreshing, but now it’s time to check out the various acts that are slated to perform. Danse Etoile performs well, as do many others. Continuing my momentum, I walk the vendor booths and greet local business owners like Greg Blanchard with NY Life and Kurt Sava with Summit Bank. Of course, I check out the roasted pig provided by the Broomfield Cheerleaders in honor of my late friend, Kelly Cooper, remembering when my daughters Ashley and Amy once served at this booth. This year I will squeeze in some time to honor my esteemed Rotary colleague Joe Mazzola as we rename the Sensory Park in his honor. We will also find out how many folks completed the new Broomfield 100 Trail Challenge. The main joy of this day is reconnecting with many neighbors, smiling, grabbing a hug or two, and sharing a few precious moments as we celebrate why Broomfield is such a special place.

Respectfully,

Mayor Randy Ahrens

BEHIND THE SCENES

From stage construction to parade management, electricity service to lawn mowing and dozens of other key responsibilities, Broomfield Days is a shining example of community cooperation. Here’s a peek behind the curtain to understand what it takes to make this event really come together.

T

his year Broomfield’s Recreation Facility Manager Matt Gulley is the lead organizer of Broomfield Days. He oversees the coordination of everything from vendor booths to road closures, trash and recycling to entertainment contracts. Although he’s been involved for several years, he is quick to point out how this is a huge operation that requires many people with various talents and experience. “Our parks and public works crews are amazing. The amount of work that goes into the set-up and tear-down of this one day event is stunning. The details and logistics handled by the city crews and all the volunteers can’t be overstated, they make my job easier by all they do.” Nancy Harrold, Broomfield’s Director of Recreation Services says Broomfield Days only happens because of “the complete and total willingness of all the departments of the City and County to provide whatever is needed from their area to make this happen. Plus all the volunteers, civic organizations, businesses – everybody is so willing to do whatever it takes to make this successful,” she says. “Nobody complains and everybody just says ‘yes, let’s make it great!’ People donate so much time and effort to make Broomfield Days possible.”

28

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2015

The annual celebration is actually the culmination of a year-long process. Following each year’s event there are group meetings to review what happened. In January, vendor and entertainment solicitations go out, contracts start to come in, and various planning meetings take place through the spring and summer. “We bring together the police, fire, streets, and parks departments, various civic group leaders, the Broomfield Chamber, and others to provide updates and make sure we’re on the same page,” says Matthew. “The Lion’s Club hosts the Pancake Breakfast, Bingo, and more; the Broomfield Optimist Club has hosted the parade for as long as I can remember,” says Nancy. (The parade is packed with school bands, political candidates, business floats, dancers, and performers of all kinds – all organized in advance.) “The Broomfield Chamber of Commerce organizes a huge Expo too. There are literally hundreds of people who make this all come together.”

Getting Midway Park ready for an event of 20,000 people is a little tricky, according to Broomfield Parks Superintendent Gary Schnoor. He’s been part of Broomfield Days for more than 30 years and knows more than almost anyone about the nuances of preparing the park. “The park is still heavily used in the weeks leading up to the event, and we try to give it some extra water to get the grass thick, knowing it will take quite a beating,” he says. “And then we have to let it dry out a little in the days beforehand as there will be trailers, carnival rides, and food vendor trucks coming in before all the crowds.” A few days before, Gary’s crews will mow the whole park, then use hand mowers to cut out lower spots for about 250 specific vendor booths, rides, and similar needs. To make the ground safer, they look for any holes to fill in, make sure sprinkler valve boxes are marked, trim tree branches, etc. They check all the electric outlets and wires for the hundreds of vendors and other spots needing plugs. They even put in precise GPS markers for the popular Dock Dogs distance jump stage in the Bow Wow Broomfield pet-themed area. There are four performance stages to be set up, and they mark out spots for the 200 vehicles in the car show. In the meantime, the signs staff is busy making dozens of signs that direct people and vehicles around the event. Street Services and Traffic Control Supervisor Rudy Cesena says Saturday gets started at 4:30 a.m. as the signs and barriers are put up to close the roads. “Making sure everyone can drive around safely is my biggest concern,” he says. “I have guys on all the roads to make sure people know where to go.” Rudy has worked for Broomfield for 33 years; when asked what he likes most about Broomfield

Photos courtesy of The City and County of Broomfield

Days, he says: “Everyone working together. It’s a great accomplishment when you think about it. So many people are part of this.” The Streets Department manages all the roads with help from the Broomfield Police Dept. “Midway is a very busy road, and people aren’t always aware we’re going to have a festival,” says Nancy. “All the setup for detouring, parking, road closures, managing the areas for the 5k and 1-mile runs, the parade from Main Street to Midway Park – they are vital. The Police Department is a huge part of the event. Dozens of officers help with managing traffic, road diversions, park safety, lost kids, injuries, and generally keeping order.” There are emergency response crews, first aid stations, and related safety resources throughout the park as well. Cleaning up between major events is another crucial activity, especially closing and re-opening the roads around the parade or resetting the area after the pancake breakfast. There are 18 composting/recycling/trash stations throughout the park, and vendors need to have as much compostable and recyclable material as possible. “We aim to have between 150 and 200 volunteers to help with the zero waste stations alone,” says Matthew. Another big concern is always the weather. “We just hope for sunny skies and know we’ll still do this, rain or shine,” says Matthew.

And finally, city crews and volunteers help clean up after all the fun. “If you drive Midway Boulevard on Sunday morning, by about ten o’clock you would never even know a festival occurred the day before. They do a really awesome job,” says Nancy. Broomfield Days is free to attend, and the hundreds of people involved in helping make the weekend go smoothly are not directly compensated by the thousands of visitors. However, Matthew describes most vendors are required to support a non-profit organization of their choosing. “Just purchasing something is helping the community, even if you didn’t realize it,” he says.

TRADE FAIR Connects Businesses with Community By Anne Rhoades

The Broomfield Days Trade Fair, sponsored by the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce, is an annual feature of Broomfield Days and a great opportunity for the community to get familiar with many of Broomfield’s businesses in a fun and festive environment. The popular Trade Fair runs from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2015.

T

he Broomfield Days Trade Fair includes about 90 booths that provide information on various products and services available in the community. The Fair provides a great chance for businesses to network, advertise, and interact in a more personal way with potential customers and clients. Business owners who are already members of the Chamber of Commerce enjoy additional marketing and promotion in addition to receiving prime booth locations. According to Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO of the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce, “Local businesses are vital to the overall economic success of Broomfield and through the Trade Fair we are able to feature those businesses and remind attendees to support their local business community.” Kerr adds, “Each year, we hear from various booth holders who thank us for the exposure their business received at the event. They are able to reach thousands in the community over the course of just one day. And the face-to-face interactions really bring their advertising to life in a way that can prove beneficial to their business.” Although many businesses return annually, new companies sharing their products and services are always welcome and included. For example, as part of the organization’s annual fundraising efforts, the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce is the only beer provider at the Fair. In years past, Budweiser and Coors were the sole participating companies, with one local brewery edging onto the scene last year. This year, not only will popular local brewing company Big Choice Brewery be returning

30

again, but the Chamber is now working with all four local breweries: 4 Noses Brewing, Big Choice Brewing, Nighthawk Brewery, and Wonderland Brewing. “Each will offer two beer choices at both beer tent locations,” says Kerr. “This will be great for attendees to ‘drink local’ and support their local Broomfield breweries!”

Another positive aspect that has evolved over time is the conscious effort to be environmentally responsible; the City and County of Broomfield requires all businesses participating in the Trade Fair to sign a contract assuring they will comply with a “zero waste standard.” With this in place, event organizers can plan ahead to

reduce waste, reuse materials, and set up Zero-Waste stations that sort recyclable and compostable materials like paper cups, food scraps, and plastic water bottles. The response to this extra effort to protect the environment is very positive. Jennifer Kerr reports that the program truly “does cut down on waste in the park during the event and gets everyone to think more ‘green.’” As Kerr points out, “Ultimately, we want to spotlight our business community, but this is also a fundraiser for the Broomfield Chamber and we utilize these funds to run our business and to help strengthen other businesses through valuable programs, networking events, marketing and promotional opportunities, and the chance to grow personally and professionally.”

Broomfield Days Aims for Zero Waste By Kristen Beckman

An event the size of Broomfield Days inevitably generates a large amount of waste, particularly when attendees enjoy food and other vendor products throughout the day. In the past, much of this type of waste has ended up in landfills.

T

he City and County of Broomfield has been following a Zero Waste plan for several years during Broomfield Days with the goal of eliminating as much waste as possible entering landfills. The Zero Waste concept calls for event organizers to plan ahead to reduce solid waste, reuse as many elements as possible, and set up Zero Waste stations for recyclable and compostable materials. As part of the initiative, Broomfield Days vendors are required to distribute only recyclable or compostable products, including all tableware and utensils. Food vendors are encouraged to offer finger foods that don’t require containers or utensils. In addition, vendors are asked to use post-consumer recycled paper and products for flyers and brochures as well as recyclable and biodegradable bags. Styrofoam and plastic containers will not be allowed. To assist vendors in using materials that are acceptable with its Zero Waste requirements, the Broomfield Recreation Department will offer acceptable hot and cold cups, utensils, plates, and napkins for vendors to order. Zero Waste stations will be available throughout the park during Broomfield Days to allow visitors to separate their waste into bins for recycling or composting. Volunteers are still needed to assist at 19 Zero Waste stations, where they will help festival visitors correctly sort waste into the proper bins. Volunteer shifts are between two and three hours throughout the day on Saturday, and two volunteers are needed per station. A training session for volunteers will be provided prior to the event. Community organizations are encouraged to provide volunteers as a project and to help them gain exposure within the community. Groups may wear t-shirts with their company name or logo to promote their business while assisting at Zero Waste stations. For additional information on the Zero Waste initiative, contact Carolyn Johnson at 303-460-6923 or cjohnson@broomfield.org.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2015

GOES TO THE By Kristen Beckman

Broomfield Days offers fun for everyone, and that includes its four-legged furry visitors too. BowWow Broomfield is a special area of Broomfield Days located in the southern portion of Midway Park offering petrelated vendors, events, and entertainment for canine visitors and their owners.

T

he dog-centered events will take place on both Saturday and Sunday during Broomfield Days. Dillon Clements, recreation facility coordinator with the City and County of Broomfield, said BowWow Broomfield is in its eighth year and was created when a Broomfield Days planner noticed that many people would bring their dog to the festival. Planners wanted to create a fun place for dogs and their owners to visit and participate in activities during Broomfield Days. Dogs of all ages, sizes, and abilities can participate in a variety of events at BowWow Broomfield. A lure-chasing course is sure to attract dogs that like to run and chase. Lure chasing allows dogs to chase an artificial prey through a course for a set amount of time. Lure chasing is a great activity to fulfill a dog’s need for play and exercise. Run Dog Run will operate the course in partnership with the Broomfield Crossing Rotary. The cost for the course is $10 per dog for 10 minutes on the course. The premier dog event at Broomfield Days is the seventh-annual national DockDogs competition. DockDogs is a sport in which dogs compete in distance and height categories while jumping from a 40-foot dock into water. DockDogs events include three categories. The Big Air event judges dogs based on the distance jumped. The Extreme Vertical contest awards the dog that jumps the highest. And

the Speed Retrieve competition is a race to see which dog is the fastest in the water. National champion dogs will be on hand at BowWow Broomfield to show off their skills, but all dogs can participate in the competition to see how they stack up against each other as well as the pros. Registration for the DockDogs event will begin at 8:00 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday of Broomfield Days or you can pre-register at www. dockdogs.com. The competition begins at 9:00 a.m. both days. For more information on DockDogs, visit www. rockymountaindockdogs.com. Dogs that are more inclined to shop than play will enjoy visiting with nearly two dozen vendors that will have booths at BowWow Broomfield. Clements said vendors offering all types of pet-related services and products, including photographers and companies selling leashes and pet toys, will be on hand. In addition, plans are in the works to bring adoptable dogs to the event in partnership with local humane societies, said Clements. Dog owners are encouraged to bring dogs that are friendly and will enjoy being around other dogs and people. It could be warm during Broomfield Days, so dogs should be offered plenty of water while participating in events, said Clements. All dogs attending Broomfield Days and BowWow Broomfield must be leashed.

More information on BowWow Broomfield is available at www.broomfield.org.

Broomfield Days Parade is a Foundation of the Annual Celebration By Anne Rhoades

O

ne of the most beloved events of Broomfield Days is the Parade. Thousands of people gather to view this long standing tradition which began back in the 1950s as part of the city’s Fourth of July holiday and has evolved into a major part of the Broomfield Days celebration. Perennial parade favorites include marching bands from Broomfield, Horizon, and Legacy High Schools, as well as the elementary schools, church groups, and local organizations that march each year; some schools and groups showcase floats while others march or ride skateboards or scooters. The parade is sponsored each year by the Broomfield Luncheon Optimist Club, which strives to involve as much of the community as possible in the events. They also provide funding for the trophies awarded for judged events, including the car club, school bands, and the clown contest held earlier in the park. Their efforts each year result in a spectacular variety of participants. First place trophies are awarded for each eligible entry in its classification and category, as well as a sweepstakes award for the best overall entry in the float and marching band categories. For those looking for a sweet spot to view the procession, a parade route map will be posted September 5 at http://www. broomfield.org. The judging area and trophy presentation is always held directly in front of the Grand Stand (just east of the Firehouse on the south side of Midway). According to Melissa Jones, Parade Coordinator, the best parking is west of Nickel Street in the Broomfield Garden Center area. The parade will leave the staging area at Main Street and Midway Boulevard by 9:30 a.m. and reach Midway Park by 10:00 a.m. Roads will be closed along the route and at the staging area. Please view the map for specifics at www.Broomfield.org. Are you looking for an opportunity to give back to the community? Joe Butkovich, President of the Broomfield Optimist Club, would like to invite you to join the organizations at any time of the year. For more information please call 303-469-1923. ark Fraley is the winner of the 2015 Broomfield Days Poster Contest. Mark and his family have lived in Broomfield for two years. He is a preschool/special education teacher in Longmont and has also taught at Aspen Creek Elementary School. The title of his entry is “Broomfield Collage” and is a collage of clips from The Broomfield Enterprise, Colorado travel brochures, and The Broomfielder magazine. He generally uses the materials just as found, but occasionally adds color with acrylic paint. The three children shown in the photo are his own children, aged 9-, 6-, and 3-yearsold. The scene, from Plaster Reservoir during an Open Space Event on June 9, was captured during one of his family’s frequent outings in Broomfield. All of this year’s entries are currently on display at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Library and copies of the winning poster will be sold at Broomfield Days. HOW TO THROW THE NEIGHBORHOOD’S BEST

FOOTBALL

PARTY By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

If you’re a football fan who loves to cook and entertain, you might already be the most popular person on the block. If you’re new to this football party gig, however, fear not – we’ve got you covered. As with all entertaining, the key is to keep things simple. Don’t cook recipes you haven’t made before, and especially for football, don’t prepare complicated, fussy food. A great football party requires very few things: a big TV, plenty of cold drinks, and simple, easy, one-hand food. Stock your bar with lots of cold microbrews plus non-alcoholic options. A buffet of simple, fresh food, including chips, dips, salsas, wings, and other finger foods, along with something heartier, like chili, make for an easy crowd-pleasing meal. And remember: if guests offer to bring something, take them up on it – but graciously provide a specific assignment. There is no rule that says you have to prepare everything yourself!

Classic Guacamole • • • • • • • •

3 ripe avocados, halved and pitted 1 tomato, halved, seeded and diced ½ red onion, diced ½ jalapeño, diced (optional) 1 clove garlic, minced (optional) 1 lime ¼ cup cilantro, chopped Hot sauce and kosher salt

In a small bowl, gently mash the avocados. Add tomato, onion, and jalapeño and fold together. Squeeze in a little lime juice and taste; adjust with additional lime juice, salt, and hot sauce. Add cilantro and serve at room temperature with a selection of chips and raw vegetables. Avocados are rarely sold when perfectly ripe, so you may need to purchase your avocados two to three days before you plan to make guacamole. Since they do continue to ripen once picked, it’s easy to buy a few at different stages of ripeness and use them as they ripen. Avocados are ripe when the flesh yields to gentle pressure. If avocados are unripe, the flesh will be tasteless and too hard for mashing, and if they’re overripe the flesh may be brownish-gray with an unappealing bitterness. It takes a little practice to learn when an avocado is perfect, but once you figure it out you’ll always know! Store avocados at room temperature until ripe, then use as soon as possible. If you’re not quite ready to use, store in refrigerator to postpone further ripening – but use quickly.

Three-Bean Chicken Chili • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 tbsp. canola oil 1 onion, diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tbsp. ground cumin 1 tsp. oregano 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces 3 15-oz. cans beans (1 each cannellini, pinto, and black) 2 cups canned chicken broth (plus more as needed) 1 7-oz. can diced green chilies 1 can corn, drained 1 can diced tomatoes Fresh cilantro, grated cheese and/ or tortilla chips Hot sauce, freshly ground pepper, and kosher salt

Heat oil in large stockpot over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, cumin, oregano, and red pepper. Sauté until onion softens, about 5 minutes; do not let garlic brown. Drain beans; reserve 1/2 cup bean liquid. Puree one can of cannellini beans with reserved bean liquid. Season chicken with salt and pepper and add to pan; gently cook chicken for about 5 minutes. Add beans, broth, chilies, pureed beans, corn, and tomatoes to chicken. Simmer gently until chicken is tender and cooked through, about 10 minutes. Stir frequently to keep mixture from sticking to bottom of stockpot. Taste for seasoning; add salt, pepper or hot sauce as necessary; thin with additional stock if desired. Ladle chili into bowls. Top with cheese, cilantro, and tortilla chips.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT

Get Those Feet Tapping at the 2015

Dancing with the Broomfield Stars By Dan Powers

Dancing with the Broomfield Stars Thursday, September 24, 2015 1STBANK Center • Doors Open: 5:30 p.m. • Food Served: 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. • Show Begins: 7:00 p.m. • Tickets: $20 (youth), $40-$55 (adult), $500 (table of ten)

R

eturning for the 6th year, the hugely popular Dancing with the Broomfield Stars benefiting the Broomfield Community Foundation is bringing together another slate of brave and talented local “stars” to surprise and impress the audience on September 24 at the 1STBANK Center. New this year will be a judges’ panel of past years’ dancers and special guest emcee Denise Plante of KOSI 101 and Colorado and Company. As in the TV show, typically novice dancers are partnered with a local dance instructor; they practice for a few weeks and then their performance on the big stage prompts online and in-person donations. Guests will enjoy fantastic food options from local restaurants before the show and the program will highlight the numerous organizations that benefit from the proceeds. On top of that some surprise dance moves are certain to have you cheering. Karen Smith, Executive Director of the Broomfield Community Foundation, says the event is really hitting its stride, with many people coming even if they don’t know the dancers. “So many friends and family will come of course,” she says, “but now we have many past attendees and dancers making sure they come again, they know how fun it is.” (If you can’t attend, you can visit www.broomfieldfoundation.org/vote-for-a-dancer and make online donations.) Karen also wants people to realize the event couldn’t happen without the generous donation of instruction time and studio space on behalf of many local studios, food from the numerous great restaurants, and local business sponsors such as Sill-TerHar Motors and Restoration Specialists. The venue: The 1STBank Center is another major part of how the program succeeds,” says Karen.

Let Us Do the Dirty Work!

Donations to the event support the Broomfield Community Foundation’s grants for programs that benefit Broomfield citizens in the categories of Civic Projects, Human Service Programs, Arts and Humanities, Senior Citizen Programs, and Educational Programs. Last year the Foundation raised more than $100,000. For instructor Allison Johnson, being part of the event means more than dancing: “I want to be involved to teach my kids the importance of giving back,” she says. “Also, we love this town and want to see it thrive!” Allison will be dancing freestyle with Vinny Pallone of Pallone & Assoc. Metro Brokers. “Vinny is the best part of being involved. He’s willing to try anything – which makes my job easier and more fun! And, in general, the event is another excuse to dance,” says Allison. Vinny confesses he didn’t jump at the chance initially. “I was asked to be involved by a number of people. After saying no three times I realized this wasn’t about me, it was about our town which I love more than any one person living here. I went from not wanting to be involved to wanting to win and raise money for a fantastic cause.” He describes his dance as fun and face paced. “We wanted to make this about entertainment, not about strict dance,” says Vinny. “Allison is amazing and could not have made our dance more fun. We look forward to making people cheer, smile, and donate that money.” 2013 dancer Nicole Salter with A Precious Child says she was incredibly honored and excited when asked to be a judge at this year’s event. “As a former dancer, I loved hearing the judges’ responses and I feel that the judges really bring a lot to the table in terms of personality and helping accomplish the overall mission of the event. say dancing in BDWTS was one of the best experiences of my life.” Nicole loved learning and meeting other dancers plus the friendships that formed. She says the best part of volunteering for the event is that she has “elevated my wedding and gala dancing skills! In all seriousness, I am a firm believer in volunteering and I am beyond thrilled that I can help contribute towards the great things that the Broomfield Community Foundation does for our community.” Dancing Star Pete Crouse is the “Chief InsPIErational Officer” of Infinitus Pie and he will be dancing a special “hybrid” dance, honoring the legacy of his mother Annie “Flower Power” Crouse. “I want to do this simply because I LOVE Broomfield,” he says. Tom Orlando also danced in 2013 and will be a judge this year. He says this is a huge honor. “When I was a dancer for Broomfield Dancing with the Stars, it was one of the best experiences ever. My wonderful instructors Marie JosePayannet and Sophie Payannet from Danse Etoile Ballet did their best to try and get me ready for the night. That night, meeting with the other dancers and hearing that they too were so nervous, we all formed a bond. To this day, I keep in touch with some of them.” He says there’s no better way to have a fundraiser. “My recommendation for anyone looking to really see what Broomfield is all about is to come to this event.”

BROOMFIELD CHAMBER

Access

By Jennifer Kerr, President and CEO, Broomfield Chamber of Commerce

In

November of last year, we held our annual Board Planning Session. Just like any other business or industry, we continually work very hard to maintain our relevance in the community. We learned something very important that day. We needed to address our messaging. This July marked the third anniversary of the Chamber’s Business Resource Center. Yet, there is still confusion about the BRC and that it is a separate entity from the Chamber. Our BRC is something we are very proud of and want to make sure we feature it prominently as one of our most successful programs. Plus, as a Chamber in our 55th year, we don’t always do a good job of celebrating the successes of our Members and communicating the positive impact

we have on our community. We also need to do a better job of promoting the partnerships and resources that collaborate with us to ensure the success of our business community. It’s through our Members, partners, resources, and collaborators that we are able to provide the access needed to strengthen our community and help our businesses succeed. Very few organizations are able to leverage this kind of access. It was this revelation that put a spotlight on the new direction we are going. Beginning this month, we will be unveiling our new logo and new website along with our plans to continue to embrace being a Chamber for the 21st Century and addressing the needs of the five generations currently in the workforce. As a business ourselves, we face the same challenges as many of our Members. We know the importance of making connections, building relationships, providing support, and creating promotional opportunities and opportunities for personal and professional growth. We cannot do any of these things without the financial support of our Members. They make everything we do possible and share in our success. We began the year with our Annual Dinner that focused on Innovation. This will be our most innovative step to date as we plan to blaze new trails for the future of our Chamber, our Members, and our community.

I received a home loan from Caliber Home Loans. I was extremely impressed with the process. I was approved and waiting for my closing well before closing happened. They were expedient and always responded immediately to my needs. I would HIGHLY recommend Caliber to anyone needing their services. They receive 11 out of 10 stars from me! Thanks Joshua and Caliber Home Loans - Lisa G

Follow the “Ten Percent Rule” for school. Every school kid wants a cool backpack. What’s not cool is the back pain and strained muscles that come from lugging around too much weight—especially for girls and younger kids. So use this simple rule to keep those little bodies safe: a backpack should weigh no more than 10% of a child’s weight. Even the best backpack can cause problems if not used properly. Ask children if anything hurts after carrying it all day. If you have any concerns, call CHPG Family Medicine at 303-430-5560 or CHPG Neuroscience & Spine at 303-925-4060. We’re here to help kids stay 100% healthy.
