FROM THE

In the Spirit of

Friendly Competition This month’s column is all about “Winning,” – in a friendly competition sort of way, not in the Charlie Sheen sense of the word.

F

irst I would like to congratulate our Cover Photo winner Jesse Silver for providing a photograph that epitomizes Broomfield, the beginning of fall, and the spirit of Broomfield Days all at once. Thank you Jesse for the beautiful photo of Broomfield’s Brunner Farmhouse! We received several wonderful submissions, some of which you will see in future issues of the magazine. This issue is filled with details about Broomfield’s annual hometown celebration – Broomfield Days! Keep the issue handy for reference to all of the local activities planned on September 17 and make sure to come out and join the fun. Last month I wrote about Dancing With the Broomfield Stars coming up on September 29 at the 1st Bank Center. The seven other “celebrity” dancers and I have been practicing diligently for weeks and we hope to see you at this fun and exiting event which supports dozens of worthy Broomfield organizations through the Broomfield Community Foundation. The winner of this event is not necessarily the best dancer, but the dancing pair who brings in the most donations. While it would be thrilling to win, I am just so happy to participate. A vote (donation) for any of the dancers is actually a vote for the community of Broomfield and when Broomfield wins, we all win! So vote for one of the dancing pairs below, or if you wish, vote for me and Lucio! • • • • • • • •

Protect Your Heirs! (Part 6 of 6) Free Estate Planning Workshop This entertaining educational workshop is designed to expose the real truth about estate planning and the often complicated issues that surround it. You will learn how death taxes work and the misconceptions about wills and trusts. You will also learn how to protect the inheritance from your children’s creditors and their spouses in the event of a divorce. Workshop dates are listed below. Reservations are required so call to reserve your spot today!

September 8, 6:30 – Longmont September 13, 1:00 – Westminster September 22, 6:30 – Brighton Estate Planning ·Wills/Trusts ·Business Planning Efficient Probate and Trust Administration More than 40 Years of Combined Experience

193 S. 27th Ave. 541 Main Street, Brighton, CO Longmont, CO 303.654.0100 303.774.1976 www.EstatePlansThatWork.com

Estate planning is more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide so much more to protect your family. Most of these protections are ignored in form-driven estate plans. By example…. Mary and Bill were good parents, and their son John turned out to be a great person but a poor money manager. John had grown up, gotten married, completed college, and had a good job. But John spent every dime he earned, often even before he earned it. John had to have the latest things, and thought using a credit card to get them was a better approach than saving for them. If John got a dollar he spent two. Bill and Mary sought legal advice before their deaths. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning because their estate would not be death taxable. He told them to put beneficiary designations on all their assets to their son, because “it is simple and avoids probate.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought advice from a counseling-oriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals. Their primary objective was to protect John from squandering his inheritance after their deaths. So Bill and Mary left their assets in trust for John, not directly to him. As a result, John was not able to spend it as soon as he got it. They designed a system to help John learn how his inheritance could work for him and help support him for the rest of his life. Bill and Mary had sometimes wondered if the planning they did was worth the extra time and effort. Knowing John would be protected from himself was worth it.

TIPS FOR A

FROM ST. ANTHONY NORTH HEALTH CAMPUS

Building A

Better School Year

QUALITY WORK • Basement Finishing • Deck Construction • Bathroom Remodels • Repairs • Enhancing Roofs • Fully Licensed

By Matthew Morgan, DO – CHPG Primary Care Northglenn

How successful will your student be this school year? As a Family Medicine physician with grown kids of my own, I know that question passes through every parent’s mind. While some factors are outside our control, here are four steps you can take to make the year better and the future healthier for your student: 1. To move forward, look back. Consider the highs and lows of the last school year. What went right? Why do you think that is? Where did your student encounter problems? If you could have a “do-over”—which in many ways you can—what would you have done differently? It’s great to do some learning of our own to help improve your student’s outcomes. 2. Set the best pattern possible. Healthy meals and snacks, regular bedtimes, limited phone and electronic time—they may not sound exciting, but they are extremely important. Building a steady structure for your student’s days helps him or her manage the unexpected events much better. 3. Confirm their immunizations are current. Many parents who track their children’s immunizations carefully in infancy often overlook the ones needed later on. The State of Colorado requires that 11-year-olds have another TDAP—that’s for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, or whooping cough. The cancer-preventing HPV immunization is also recommended for both boys and girls. And for preteens and teens—the age when kids are most likely to be sharing water bottles during sports activities—the meningococcal vaccine is strongly advised. Meningitis can be a devastating disease for young people. 4. Check in with your child’s doctor. Even if your student is through his or her shot-taking years, the start of the school year is a great time to check in with a physician. I really look forward to these visits to see how kids are doing, check height and weight, bring up safety concerns, and more. Do they feel safe? Have they been bullied? What worries them? School can be tough, these days. Just asking the right questions can be the start of improving things.

Congratulations to Laurie A. Petrone of Broomfield, winner of the 2016 Broomfield Days Logo & Theme Contest!

Broomfield Days Happens Thanks to Many Helping Hands The Broomfield Days logo this year contains the words: work-play-community-together which embodies the spirit of what is accomplished every year at this much anticipated event and parade.

L

ast year I was attending a Mayors Conference in San Diego and was introduced to the idea of having a special event to honor volunteerism. For years Broomfield City Council has sponsored a dinner to express our appreciation to those who serve on our various Boards and Commissions, like Tom Silvers from the Planning & Zoning Board and Tim Griffin with Open Space & Trails Committee. But what I realized was missing was recognizing the significance of some of our other volunteers. So I embarked on a mission to get them included, and worked with our staff to coordinate the event. What we uncovered was astonishing! In 2015, city departments recorded more than 44,000 hours of volunteer service! Carrie Schulte and Ruth Wagner are library volunteers with over 30 years of gracious service to our community. Coaches, like Michael Young and Beau Smith, provide the largest contribution of volunteer hours for our youth sports, and based on the success of our local high school teams, they

From the Desk of the Mayor …

teach fundamentals very well. Other groups include Victim Advocates with valuable volunteers like Rebecca McAskill and Lisa Lewis for our police department, Meals on Wheels, and ushers at the Auditorium. What we found during our discovery phase is that Broomfield volunteers provide more than one million dollars in economic value within the community. Therefore, we inaugurated a new event to honor these volunteers with a picnic dinner and the music of Mark Diamond at our Broomfield Bay facility. Although the event was held underneath some ominous clouds, we still had about 350 people attend, including long-time volunteers like Karen Steele and Ellie McKinley. Most mentioned how appreciative they were of the recognition. So turning to our largest single volunteer event, Broomfield Days, I must note that this event would not be nearly as successful without all the volunteers, like Joe Butkovich and his fellow Optimists who have handled parade planning over all these years. The Lions Club has served the Pancake Breakfast and called Bingo since I can remember. Thanks to my former teammates Brian and Mark Clapper for all your efforts. The Car Show, which was started by Tom Fahrenbruch years ago, is now a staple to help provide donations to the Senior Resources Board. A shout-out to Ben Vagher for lending a hand to that group. The Chamber always provides services and coordinates the trade fair, soliciting volunteers like Tom Orlando, Les Madsen, and Dave Urbach to help pour beer. We have 150 volunteers man the zero waste stations that day and help explain the benefits. Many of the exhibits booths will be staffed with volunteers including Open Space Foundation’s Pat Quinn and Pat Tennyson along with the new Bird Club offshoot by Rob Bodine. Volunteers provide the essential spirit that makes Broomfield Days so special. Saying thank you is not nearly enough, but to our generous volunteers, you are so greatly appreciated!

BROOMFIELD DAYS 2016

Three Stages at Broomfield Days to Feature Variety of Music, Dance Acts By Kristen Beckman

Each year, Broomfield Days organizers strive to bring great entertainment to event attendees. This year three stages will feature performances ranging from musical acts on the main stage, to dance demonstrations on the performance stage, and specialty acts on the performance stage.

M

att Gulley, recreation facility manager and event organizer, said a local entertainment company provides a variety of entertainment options for organizers to choose from. In addition, local dance and arts studios can apply for time on the demo stage to give their students a chance to showcase their skills.

Main Stage Headlining the event this year on September 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. will be the Nacho Men, a local band that combines live dance music, costume changes, choreography, and humor for a fun and entertaining performance. Formed in 1980, the six-man band’s repertoire ranges from street corner a cappella to swing and disco, as well as favorites from every decade from the 50s through the 80s. “They are a fantastic band,” said Gulley. “They really engage the crowd and have good all-age performances.” Other scheduled Main Stage performances include:

8:00 a.m.: Optimist Club’s Clown Contest. See Broomfield’s cutest young clowns all decked out and ready to join the community parade. 11:30 a.m.: Global Sound Studio, which was founded as a recording studio and has evolved into a music school, will showcase young students enrolled in its Academy of Rock program. Students in the program build on standard practice sessions to become more advanced individually and as a group and then perform at events

in vertical space. The company was founded in 2011 and is made up of professionally trained ground dancers who have training in the aerial arts. Gulley said the group’s performances were popular last year. In addition to its scheduled performance, the group will also do ground performances during the event.

Demo Stage Students from local dance studios and schools will perform each half hour throughout the day. Scheduled performances at the demo stage include: • 10:30 a.m.: Elite Dance Academy • 11:00 a.m.: Grace Studios School of Dance • 11:30 a.m.: Taps ‘N Toes once they’ve perfected their performance. Gulley said the performance allows young musicians to get a taste for performing in front of a crowd.

• 12:00 p.m.: Jazzercise

2:15 p.m.: Taiko with Toni will provide a Japanese drum performance featuring traditional songs, contemporary compositions, folk tales, and lullabies.

• 1:30 p.m.: Cutting Edge Dance and Acro

Performance Stage

• And at 2:30 p.m., Broomfield’s furry friends will be decked out for the best-dressed dog show.

At 11:00 a.m. on the performance stage, Illuminar Aerial, a professional aerial dance and circus arts company based in Broomfield, will perform a technical dance program

• 12:30 p.m.: Z-Ultimate Self Defense Studios • 1:00 p.m.: Dance Arts Studio • 4:00 p.m.: Celtic Steps Irish Dance • 4:30 p.m.: Live Love Dance

“Every year there is a tremendous turnout,” said Gulley. “We’re really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a great event.” TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

BROOMFIELD DAYS 2016

Broomfield Days Parade Brings Community to Midway Park Festival By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

The Broomfield Days parade is one of the highlights of the Broomfield Days festival. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. at Main and Midway Boulevard, arriving at Midway Park at 10:00 a.m. Both non-profit and community groups as well as commercial businesses can participate. There is no entry fee for non-profit or community groups and business entries cost $50.

T

he parade usually has between 65-70 entries each year. However, in election years, such as this year, there are quite a few more entries. Both the Democrats and Republicans of Broomfield County as well as City Council candidates will participate. There are six categories for entries in the parade, including float, car and motorcycles clubs, school spirit, multicultural, marching groups and marching bands. Within these groups there are also sub-groups such as civic, religious, and commercial floats, elementary, middle, and high school school spirit, adult and kid marching groups, and middle school and high school bands. Trophies are awarded for 1st place in every category or sub-category. There is also a Sweepstakes Award for best float and best marching band. The judges are looking for creativity and originality when deciding winners. The floats are announced by the parade announcer, a role filled annually by Boomfield’s own Paul Derda. What does it take to put an event on like this? There are numerous moving parts to a parade of this size. The planning starts in early summer. The first piece of the planning is mapping out the streets that will be used. The Public Works Department specifically the Street Division, determines what streets will be open and closed, how to handle the traffic coming to watch the

24

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2016

parade and how to handle the traffic not attending the parade including people who might still need access to local streets. The Street Division creates a very elaborate map that includes the route, line-up of participating groups, street closures, traffic pattern, and the schedule of the parade. Signs for street closures have to be placed along the route at certain times in a certain place. They have to figure out how to keep everything flowing and more importantly

Photos courtesy of the City and County of Broomfield

keep everyone safe. Though the route is the same every year, the schedule can change and the parade coordinators are always trying to improve logistics every year. Sanitation is also a consideration with so many people attending the parade and overall Broomfield Days activities. The coordinators have to anticipate where the crowd will mainly gather and where will they tend to move to and make sure there are portable restrooms in those locations that are accessible and convenient. Another piece of the planning is a big team meeting with all the city staff for a

Broomfield Days overview. All aspects are reviewed. The Police Department and Fire Department, both essential to the parade running smoothly, focus on keeping everyone safe throughout the day. While the parade is going on, many vendors are completing booth set-up, some people are still finishing the Broomfield Days 5K, and there is ongoing traffic in the area. The next step is getting entries for the parade. Kay Gazaway, Community Events Coordinator reaches out to groups to invite them to participate. Applications to participate in the parade are posted to the City of Broomfield website by early June. The last big piece of the planning puzzle is to create the line-up or flow of the parade. When considering the order, Kay tries to create a mix of colors, sound and variety. She spreads similar clubs out so you will see a dance club followed by a marching band and then maybe a classic car. There are numerous city departments and tons of staff and volunteers that help the Broomfield Days Parade run smoothly. Kay’s goal of the parade is to make it, “really fun, high energy, and really showcase what is so great about Broomfield.” TO VIEW THE BROOMFIELDER™ ONLINE VISIT: WWW.LOUDMOUTHMEDIA.COM

High-Flying Fun on Tap for Dogs at BowWow Broomfield By Kristen Beckman

Have you ever seen a dog fly? If not (or even if you have) be sure to bring your dog and check out the BowWow Broomfield event during Broomfield Days.

B

owWow Broomfield features a variety of activities for dogs and their owners. The premier event is the DockDogs contest during which dogs compete in distance and height categories while jumping from a 40-foot dock into water. The competition is a two-day event starting Saturday, Sept. 17, and concluding on Sunday, Sept. 18. Competitive contests with 20 to 25 professional dock jumping dogs will alternate with recreational contests when novice dogs can try jumping from the dock. Dogs also can participate in a lure chasing course sponsored by the Broomfield Crossing Rotary Club. It takes a lot of preparation to pull off an event like BowWow Broomfield. Planning

26

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2016

begins well in advance as organizers work with Rocky Mountain DockDogs, which runs the dock jumping contests. Organizers also recruit vendors to offer products and provide information in the vendor area. Dillon Clements, recreation facility coordinator and an event organizer, said the physical set up of the event starts at least three days before the event opens on Saturday. The Parks Department is first on the scene, mowing the southern area of the park, marking 10-by-10-foot spots for vendors, and setting up temporary fencing around event areas. The day before the event, Rocky Mountain DockDogs arrives with equipment for the jumping competitions, including a large tank that serves as a pool for the dogs to jump into. The Parks Department brings in a portable water truck to fill the pool, a process that takes about three hours, said Clements. Bleachers are also set up. Vendors also arrive on Friday to set up their booths, and security is provided to ensure the equipment and products are safe overnight. Clements said about 15 to 20 pet-related vendors are expected to be on hand, including veterinarians and companies selling products like dog food, toys, and leashes. All fees paid by vendors go to offset costs for bringing in Rocky Mountain DockDogs for the jumping competitions, said Clements. Vendors who are interested in participating in BowWow Broomfield can submit applications up until the event if space permits. Clements said organizers also hope to bring in local shelters and pet rescues that would like to showcase adoptable dogs for attendees to meet. Colorado

Greyhound Rescue has signed up to bring three or four of its retired greyhound race dogs who are looking for forever homes. Rocky Mountain Dock Dogs brings in its own volunteers to manage the check-in process, run the contests, and maintain order among the dogs participating in the event. “They keep the event as orderly as possible so dogs and their owners have an opportunity to try it out,” said Clements. Owners who bring their dogs to the event are asked to only bring dogs that are comfortable around other dogs. In addition, dogs are expected to be in compliance with city ordinances, including being registered and up to date on rabies vaccinations.

Cooking Class: By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

Football and back-to-school can only mean one thing – autumn is upon us yet again. In Colorado, September is the height of our harvest season and the weather rarely feels like fall! Make the most of this beautiful month with fresh dishes that showcase our amazing local produce.

Roasted Winter Squash Salad with Hazelnuts & Prosciutto (Adapted from Food & Wine) • • • • •

3 1/2 cups diced butternut or other winter squash 3 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup blanched hazelnuts 3 cups baby arugula (about 3 oz.)

• • • • •

1 medium head frisée, torn into bite-size pieces 3 oz prosciutto, torn into bite-size pieces 1 1/2 tbsp. snipped chives 2 1/2 tbsp. balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp. hazelnut oil

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. On a baking sheet, toss squash with 2 tbsp. olive oil; season with salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes, or until tender and lightly browned. Spread hazelnuts in a pie plate and toast for 6 minutes, until golden. Let cool, then chop. In a large bowl, toss together arugula, frisée, prosciutto, chives, hazelnuts, and squash. In a small microwave-safe bowl, mix remaining 1 tbsp. olive oil with vinegar and hazelnut oil; season with salt and pepper. Microwave dressing until hot, about 1 minute. Pour dressing over salad, toss well and serve immediately.

Classic Applesauce (Adapted from Martha Stewart) •

4 lbs. apples, such as McIntosh, Gala, and Braeburn (using a variety of apples adds complexity)

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (from 2 lemons)

3 tbsp. dark-brown sugar (optional)

Cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)

Peel, core, and slice apples. In a large pot, bring apples, lemon juice, and 1 1/2 cups water to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer until apples are very soft and falling apart, 25 to 30 minutes. Mash with a potato masher, strain through food mill or pulse in a food processor until smooth with small chunks remaining. Add sugar, if using; season to taste with additional lemon juice, cinnamon and nutmeg, if desired. Let cool, then transfer applesauce to airtight containers. Continued on page 30 >

DOING SOME LANDSCAPI NG IN THE YARD THIS FALL? The City and County of Broomfield Stormwater Management Program would like to remind you that when conducting your landscaping projects, have your landscape material delivered in your driveway or find a staging area on your property. One of the leading causes of water pollution is landscaping material (rocks, compost, dirt, etc.) that is deposited in the curb and gutter. This kind of material can get washed away in stormwater runoff. The City and County of Broomfield works hard to maintain its storm sewer system and drainage ways. Storm sewers discharge directly into creeks, streams and ponds untreated. It is illegal and a violation of the Broomfield Municipal Code to dispose of or allow materials other than stormwater to discharge into the storm sewer system. Thank you for assisting the City and County of Broomfield in its efforts to keep our water clean. THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2016

I have recently been a patient at Cancer Centers of Colorado - Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette. I cannot express enough how grateful I am to have been cared for by the staff at Good Samaritan and been the recipient of financial assistance through the Good Samaritan Medical Center Foundation. Upon getting the diagnosis of breast cancer, events in my life went from bad to worse and had a devastating effect on my ability to meet my basic life needs. The staff cared enough to assess my financial situation which was not very good and a considerable source of stress, and the Foundation stepped in to help. I cannot begin to express the gratitude I feel for the financial support of Good Samaritan Medical Center Foundation. I had no idea where the money would come from to get through this, and I never imagined the generosity I would experience and the peace of mind I would have as a result. ‘Thank you’ does not scratch the surface of what I feel in my heart.” ~ Kathy W., Patient

Your generosity matters. Donate at: www.goodsamgiving.org/broom Through the Good Samaritan Foundation, donors are able to help the Good Samaritan Medical Center remain a unique environment in our community. Your gift is tax-deductible and even more important, it will help us make a difference in the community.

Broomfield Civic Center Planning Moving Forward By Dan Powers

Broomfield’s many public amenities already make the city a great place to live, but the aptly-named Civic Center promises to become a new focal point with many innovative ideas currently under discussion. Here’s some insight on some of the plans being considered for this future community hub. The Civic Center area includes more than 60 acres of public land running from 1st to 3rd Avenues and from Main to Lamar Streets. It is the hub of Broomfield’ s renowned trail and park system and includes the George Di Ciero City and County Building, the police station, Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library, the Broomfield Auditorium, North Metro Fire Rescue District headquarters, the 9/11 Memorial, the Broomfield Community Center, the Health and Human Services Building, several ball fields, and the Bay Aquatic Park. Over the last decade much of the property has been developed, however in September 2015 Broomfield City Council unanimously approved a $3.6M purchase agreement with Safeway/Alberstons to buy the vacant store at 120th Avenue and Main. The property added a significant piece to the overall Civic Center vision: proposals have been brainstormed including a mixed-use space project that would serve as a park-like gathering place with restaurants, retail, and minimal residential development. The overall Civic Center Master Plan suggests a neighborhood reflecting “the values and expectations of Broomfield.” As described in the vision planning for the Civic Center, the primary goals are “to create a gathering place, a symbolic heart for the Community, a place of

38

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2016

pride, and a regional destination.” The overall theme of the project is “to create a mixed use activity center that will attract local residents to its locally-owned or otherwise desirable eateries and retail outlets, professional offices, and residential opportunities. The park-like setting for the project provides a unique offering of attractions for visitors that … contribute to the vibrancy, economic vitality, and local character of the area.” This piece of the Civic Center sits in the northeast corner of 120th Avenue and Main St. with a vision to connect the Mamie Doud Eisnenhower Public Library and Community Park with vibrant new amenities. “What we talked about at City Council meetings a number of times is we’re really looking for a gathering spot for the community,” said Kevin Standbridge, Broomfield Deputy City and County Manager. This means designing and developing a variety of uses that would draw people in throughout the week and weekend, at different times of the day. Concepts such as coffee shops, a microbrewery, and a series of various locally-owned restaurants have been a big part of the discussion. “Retail stores, a brewpub, small food stores – with local management – these will be a priority as we move forward in the planning discussions,” says Kevin. “For example, we want to attract people out on a Saturday afternoon with friends, or be a destination for a family

bike ride, or after your kids’ soccer game you want to hang out for a while with activities at the parks and library. We have heard this should be a vibrant destination.” In May the Broomfield City Council reviewed proposals from Urban Neighborhoods Inc. of Denver and Real Capital Solutions of Louisville. Both had residential, retail, and public outdoor space. Kevin said the next efforts will be to convene with the community, building on the efforts from last year and this past spring to refine what people want to see in the Civic Center, such as what type of activities or attractions they would like. Asked about residential development potential, Kevin referred to the upcoming public conversations to be had: “You can make a compelling argument as to why some residential development there is beneficial, you have people there already using the space in the early morning and evening walking their dog, using the library, etc. What we heard in earlier community meetings and expect to continue to discuss is ‘What is the right amount of residential development?’ We want to identify what people want to see here and what they will support.” Broomfield Mayor Randy Ahrens echoes the sentiment that this area is meant to be a place where people will gather for dinner, entertainment, events, and socializing. “I’d also like to see some affordable, attainable housing here, that’s my preference. We’ve become quite a desirable place, attracted a lot of companies, and I think we need to make sure we are available to a range of people,” said Randy. “But the thing to remember is this parcel is a component of the overall Civic Center vision that goes back 25 years, where we have parks and trails, the library, City Hall, the new court building, North Metro Fire District, the Auditorium, and more; we should see this as a part of an overall city-wide plan.” Kevin said focus groups and surveys will be pursued during September, and Council may be considering more detailed proposals in this fall. A rough timeline would suggest development not occurring until later in 2017 and construction perhaps in 2018.

“Heroes of a Precious Child” Luncheon: October 4 By Elizabeth Buckingham

Interested in becoming more involved in your local community? Consider attending the sixth annual “Heroes of a Precious Child” Luncheon on October 4, held at The Omni Interlocken Resort. The luncheon is one of the year’s signature fundraising events for A Precious Child in Broomfield.

A

ccording to a 2013 survey, about 1 in 6 Colorado kids live at or near the federal poverty line. This means there might not be enough money in the household to pay for food or utilities, much less school supplies or new clothes. A Precious Child is “devoted to making a positive impact in the lives of disadvantaged and displaced children and families in Colorado by improving their quality of life.” The non-profit provides basic essentials to children in need, including clothing, winter coats, shoes, sports equipment, backpacks, school supplies, and toiletries. A recent Children’s Defense Fund study affirmed what teachers and law enforcement personnel have long known: low-income children trail behind their peers in intellectual development; they are less likely to succeed in school, less likely to graduate from high school, more likely to become teen parents, more likely to commit crimes and more likely to become low-income parents themselves in the future. Organizations like A Precious Child work hard to improve the quality of life for the most vulnerable children and families in Colorado by providing them with their basic essentials; they also focus on ensuring that children thrive academically. A Precious Child’s ultimate goal is to place children and their families on a trajectory toward self-sufficiency. A Precious Child partners with more than 200 different agencies, such as social services, non-profits, homeless shelters, fire and

40

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2016

police departments, schools, and churches, who refer children in need to the organization. Once clients receive their referral, they are able to shop at the Resource Center. Clients are assigned a personal shopper to take them through the Resource Center, which is set up like a retail store. They “shop” for clothing items and other essentials, all provided at no charge. Approved agencies are also welcome to shop at the Resource Center directly on an as-needed basis. Annually, A Precious Child serves more than 30,000 children from eight counties throughout the Denver-metro area; the organization is entirely funded by donations. The “Heroes of a Precious Child” Luncheon takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4 and is generously sponsored by a variety of local businesses, including Loudmouth Media. If you’re not able to attend the fundraising luncheon, there are numerous other ways you can assist this worthy organization. Monetary donations are gratefully accepted; they’re also in need of the following: boys’ clothing (sizes 7-18), new and gently-used clothing (all sizes and types), backpacks and school supplies, shoes, new socks and underwear, diapers, sporting equipment, new computers, storage bins, and storage space. If you’d like to schedule a donation, please contact A Precious Child at 303-466-4272. For more information about A Precious Child and its work in the community or to reserve your spot at the luncheon, please visit www.apreciouschild.org.
