Broomfield Days

Looking Forward, Looking Back

W

hen it comes to Broomfield Days, I am the first to admit, I am that person. The person who has deep roots in this town, has lived here forever, first sat and watched the parade as a very young child, and later marched in it numerous times and at various stages throughout my life. I am that person who feels an overwhelming sense of ownership about the event and this community – and there are thousands of us. For us Broomfield lifers – Broomfield Days is loaded with tradition as meaningful as any family holiday celebration. In fact, that is kind of what it is, a family holiday for our town. But for as many of us who have lived here forever, and who at some level feel that you can’t possibly “get” the meaning of Broomfield Days without years and years of participation, there are hundreds and hundreds of new Broomfielders joining our community and finding out just how special our town is every month and every year. To you – our new community members – welcome! If you have yet to dive in and discover the full essence of your new home, this is your chance. Come to Broomfield Days on September 16 and soak it in. The parade, the music, the food, the exhibits, the carnival, the car show, the people, all of it. I personally guarantee a memorable and enjoyable hometown experience. While we are looking forward and looking back, I want to acknowledge the changing of the guard at two key Broomfield organizations. This fall Karen Smith will retire from her position as Executive Director of the Broomfield Community Foundation. Karen – I have enjoyed working with you through the years and wish you the best in your next chapter! Happy trails. Welcome to Marianna Williamson, the new Executive Director. Look for an interview with Marianna in a future issue of the magazine. Recently Jennifer Kerr left her post as longtime President of the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce. We at The Broomfielder™ enjoyed a long and close partnership with Jennifer and appreciated her contributions as a columnist and her work with us as co-sponsors of the annual Taste It Broomfield event. Personally, I felt lucky to work so closely with a fellow Broomfield High School alum who shared a similar interest in and passion for maintaining the spirit of Broomfield that we both enjoyed in childhood and throughout our lives (see above). The Broomfielder™ looks forward to working with the Chamber’s new President Sam Taylor to support the goals of Broomfield’s business community.

Thanks for reading and Happy Broomfield Days,

FRIENDS of Broomfield Provides Vital Resources for Developmentally Disabled Adults

Annual Variety Show on October 12 Helps Raise Funds By Elizabeth Buckingham

I

n 1998, a group of Broomfield-area parents of developmentally disabled children formed a grassroots advocacy network with the intention of offering support to local families. In its early years, these people focused on providing advocacy, information, and referrals, as well as helping families navigate the complicated web of Medicaid and other assistance programs. As the group grew and the children entered their teenage years and then young adulthood, it became clear that there were very few resources available in the Broomfield area to assist with the transition into adult life. That initial team evolved into Friends of Broomfield and opened its day program in 2005. The non-profit now supports more than 75 women and men with developmental disabilities and continues to grow its programming, providing innovative activities and a vibrant supported employment program, among many other offerings. Today, Friends is the only state-certified non-profit supporting teens and adults with developmental disabilities in Broomfield; to get here the organization simply listened to its members and responded to the needs of the community.

Friends of Broomfield creates programs that emphasize a “person-centered perspective,” said Gina Coufal, executive director. The committed team at Friends focuses on building a place for its participants to belong, especially when many people in their lives, such as case managers, social service providers, and other agency representatives, come and go with startling speed. Friends of Broomfield “concentrates on developing skills for daily living, especially emphasizing mental, physical, and emotional health, in order to allow developmentally disabled people to live, work, and play just like everyone else,” said Gina. She feels strongly that “we’re more alike than we are different, and Friends of Broomfield is an example of a community coming together to help developmentally disabled people live rich, full, healthy lives.” Like most non-profits, Friends of Broomfield fundraises a good portion of its yearly operating budget. This year, its popular annual variety show, titled “Inspired,” will be held at the Broomfield Auditorium on Thursday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m. The evening is an incredible opportunity to learn more about Friends and showcases the participants’ range of talents, including singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments, and is designed as an uplifting thank-you to the community. Participants are involved in every aspect of the production, from auditions to planning, and organization to execution. Gina noted that “there is no way you can come away from this evening unchanged.” Tickets to the “Inspired” variety show are $20 each and children under five are free; the money raised goes to support scholarships for unique activities, including cooking and gardening classes, and annual camping and ski trips. If you’d like to be part of this inspiring organization, Friends of Broomfield also has many other opportunities for volunteers. Learn more at www.friendsofbroomfield.org or by calling 303-404-0123.

Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities presents the Broomfield Community Players’ Production of Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite, September 29 and 30 at 7:00 p.m. and October 1 at 2:00 p.m., at the Broomfield Auditorium. Plaza Suite, a comedy in three acts, follows three different encounters in Suite 719 of New York’s Plaza Hotel. The first is the anniversary celebration of a longmarried couple from Mamaroneck; the second is the reunion of a Hollywood producer with his former high-school sweetheart (now a married mother of three still in their hometown of Tenafly, N.J.); and the final act is the beleaguered parents of a bride who has locked herself in the bathroom and refuses to be married. This is a quintessential Neil Simon play featuring real life characters in awkward, poignant, and amusing situations. This production is rated PG-13 for adult themes. Advance tickets through BrownPaperTickets.com are $10 for students and senior citizens and $15 for adults (processing fees apply). Tickets purchased at the door will be $15 for students and senior citizens and $20 for adults. For more information call: 303-460-6800.

SEPTEMBER 20 Mark your calendar for a series of monthly educational talks entitled “Planning for Successful Aging: Utilizing Local Resources.” Topics will include healthcare, real estate, financial and legal topics, senior housing options, and downsizing. Anne Shaw, Broomfield native and Realtor® with Your Castle Real Estate, is partnering with Broomfield Senior Services to co-sponsor the series of 60-minute presentations on the third Wednesday of every month at 10:30 a.m. at the Broomfield Senior Center. Anne said she began the presentation series because she wanted seniors to feel empowered and connect them with local allies and experts who can help navigate decision-making. She said, “In working with seniors I have found that many have no idea what is available to them, how much it will cost, or the process for making all the pieces fit together. I want to give them helpful information, introduce them to trusted local resources, and answer their questions. Beyond helping with immediate needs, my intention is to give individuals and families direction and confidence so they feel empowered when the time comes to make a major life decision.” The series debuts with “Senior Housing Options” on Sept. 20, followed by “Estate Planning 101” on Oct. 18, “The Truth About Selling a Home in Today’s Market” on Nov. 15, and “Legacy 101: What to Consider When Creating Your Will; Benefits of Trusts in Estate Planning; How to Reduce Estate Taxes ‘” on Dec. 20. id you know influenza vaccines have been around for more than 80 years? Whether you answered yes or no, you probably have a good follow-up query of your own: “With that much experience, why aren’t flu vaccines effective every season?” It’s a good question, and one I’d like to answer here, especially with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) confirming influenza claims thousands of lives each year.

Here’s what you need to know THIS season to protect your family and yourself. 1. Will this year’s flu vaccine be different than those given before? Yes. It has to be, because the strains of the virus that affect humans most—Types A and B—replicate many times from one year to the next. With each replication, there are changes in the virus DNA. Each season’s vaccine is based on the best predictive model … and some models are closer than others. Even if the new vaccine is not a perfect match, it still provides some immunity and is superior to no vaccination. 2. Can flu vaccine give you the flu? Absolutely not. The flu vaccine is made of dead viral particles and has no infectious capacity. Some people feel slightly ill after because the vaccine stimulates the immune system.

3. What are the symptoms of flu? Runny nose, sore throat, and cough are common, as is a sudden onset of extreme fatigue, body ache, fever, and chills. More than 90% of flu patients develop a high fever within the first 24 hours. Flu can also cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea. Symptoms usually have very rapid onset, last three to five days, and then resolve. Transmission of disease is through large bodily droplets from sneezing, coughing or body fluids. Patients are usually contagious 24-hours prior to onset of symptoms and up to three to four days after. 4. Are there medications if you do get the flu? Yes, several. The best-known antiviral medication is Tamiflu (Oseltamivir). Generally, antiviral therapy reduces the symptoms by one to two days and is most effective taken within the first 48 hours. Per the CDC, only patients with certain risk factors need to be treated with Tamiflu. This includes those 65-and-older, all pregnant women, all women two weeks postpartum, patients with chronic medical problems (such as diabetes, heart or lung disease) and all immuno-compromised patients. Young, healthy individuals usually recover from infection without the need for medication. Best advice? Get that flu shot! THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2017

How to Keep Control as You Age! Offered by Dolan & Associates, P.C. As you advance through the golden years, you may start to experience loss of control in your life. You begin to realize that you cannot do everything you did when you were younger, both physically and mentally. Caring for the yard and maintaining the house becomes harder and eventually even driving and handling the checkbook can become a challenge. You know that you are struggling in your day-to-day life, but your pride and concern over loss of control prevents you from asking for the help you need to keep yourself safe and protected. The fear and frustration of this loss of control comes to a head when your kids show up and have the nerve to suggest that you sell your home and consider moving into an apartment or even an assisted living facility. These transitions are hard, but are often the right choice for you as you grow older. An effective estate plan that encourages family involvement and communication can be designed to help ease the frustration of these transitions and allow you to maintain control for a longer period of time in your advanced years. Being proactive and planning ahead will allow those that love and care for you to provide you with, or arrange for, assistance that allows you to stay in control of yourself and your finances. While you may want to delay family involvement for as long as possible, getting your family involved early can actually allow you to stay in control longer. You need to realize that your children don't want to take over any more than you want to give up control. Starting early and allowing for a gradual transition produces much better results for everyone involved and enables you to remain in control as long as possible.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2017

Being Mayor is a full-time job during our beloved Broomfield Days celebration. The day before, I play golf to help raise money for the Senior Resources Board in a tournament organized by Ben Vagher and Kathy Hoff. Immediately after, I head over to the annual Lions Club Bingo game where Mark and Brian Clapper miss calling out my numbers. While there, my wife Wendy and I enjoy mingling with neighbors like Pete and Carolyn Crouse. The next morning, at Broomfield Days, I start the day at the pancake breakfast at the Girl Scout Shelter. I run into friends including Dave and Mary Beacom or former Broomfield Eagles classmates Tom Brunner and Jim Shatto. Next up is the Mayors Cup 5K and 1-mile run at 8:00 a.m. sharp. At this point you can already hear Paul Derda welcoming citizens like Lou and Amy Moir or Larry and Tammy Brown as they gather for the parade. Jack TerHar, Greg Larsen, and Shane Gilmore make sure I ride in the latest Mustang convertible during the parade. Tradition holds that my “bodyguard,” Steve Oser, is ensconced behind the wheel to navigate my wife and I safely on the parade route. Not sure if Steve took the car, as rumored, for a test drive to Estes Park last year. The tradition of the parade brings our community together and promotes that hometown feel. Clay Shuck and the City crew, along with many volunteers make sure the day is enjoyed by all. The beer tent, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and its new interim president, Sam Taylor, is always well attended and has been manned by boards members like Lizbeth Geiser, Bill Noonan, and Tom Orlando. Many acts perform on the stages with appearances by our local dance studios and others. One of my favorite events of the day is the traditional Optimists clown contest. Arts and crafts vendors participate as well, allowing me to collect some Christmas stocking stuffers along the way. I also visit business vendors like Greg Blanchard and Dave Manley of NY Life Insurance. At the end of the day I like to kick back and listen to artists on the main stage. This year’s featured group is Chris Daniels & the Kings. I suggest that every attendee try to meet at least one new resident to grow your circle of friends and have more familiar faces you can run into around our humble town. See you there!

A Community Gathers Together

By Bette Erickson

THE BROOMFIELDERâ„¢ SEPTEMBER 2017

Cotton candy, a colorful parade, music, friends, and funnel cake. The anticipation builds until it explodes all over town the third weekend in September: Broomfield Days. City and County manager, Charles Ozaki, estimated Broomfield’s signature event has been entertaining residents and visitors at Midway Park since the mid-1970s. And it takes hundreds of hours of planning and prep, along with dozens of permits to pull-off an event of this magnitude.

Paws in the Park program. Those are just some of the more than a dozen community events offered in Broomfield throughout the year. With roughly 280-300 vendors at Broomfield Days, Mr. Gulley explained the City requires that the food and activity vendors donate a percentage of their gross proceeds from the festival to a non-profit organization of their choice. That sums to thousands of dollars to charitable groups. The benefits and goodwill of Broomfield Days are obviously far-reaching. While no event is 100% zero waste, Broomfield Days is remarkably environmentally-friendly, too. Broomfield’s Carolyn Johnson does community outreach months in advance and oversees between 150 to 200 community volunteers. Throughout Midway Park, visitors have access to nearly 20 zero waste stations. “It’s a great day – it’s a great event,” Mr. Gulley said. “When the day is over, it’s a real sense of satisfaction.” Continued on page 26...

Recreation Matt Gulley, Broomfield’s Recreation Manager, said his team puts in 17-hour days leading up to the weekend event. “I personally enjoy Broomfield Days,” he added. “I get a great deal of satisfaction seeing all of the moving pieces come together.” And come together they do. Mr. Gulley and community events coordinator, Kay Gazaway, process extensive paperwork, including applications from various groups and organizations for participation in the parade, and reserve booth spaces and secure and approve permits months before all of the activities of Broomfield Days begin, he explained. Mr. Gulley said that beginning in March, typically between 600-650 hours of preparation is what his recreation department dedicates leading up to the September event. To be sure, the City and County of Broomfield does a good job for its citizens with its many community festivities. While Mr. Gulley and Ms. Gazaway split the responsibilities for Broomfield Days, Ms. Gazaway oversees Broomfield’s Dog Days at The Bay, the Brew HaHa, the holiday Tree Lighting ceremony, the popular Talk to Santa program, the annual Student Art Show, Easter Extravaganza and the Dog Park Easter

Parks Broomfield historical documents indicate that Midway Blvd. was paved shortly after 1955 as complaints of stray cattle wandering into residents’ front yards during rain storms became an issue. As the city’s borders expanded so did the amount of paved streets. What makes Midway Blvd.’s Broomfield Days such a success, as you can imagine – is multiple departments coordinating. Public Works, Recreation, Police, Community Development, and more come together to make the day a success. Included with those partners is the North Metro Fire Rescue District from its first aide and safety information booth to its emergency hub at the Fire Station at the west end of the parade route at 1275 W. Midway Blvd. Longtime Broomfield Superintendent of Parks, Gary Schnoor, makes the planning and execution of Broomfield Days seem effortless. “It brings the community together more so than any other event,” he explained. His department, too, as he said his team dedicates some 650 hours of staff time in making the festival a reality. And they do it all without hiring any additional staff. Mr. Schnoor’s team begins kick-off meetings for Broomfield Days right after the community’s July 4th Great American Picnic. He said the Monday preceeding Saturday, September 16 is when the final preparations begin with a walk through the park, turf inspection, checking electrical outlets, permitting, planning irrigation, and the gathering of materials. Interestingly, some of the trees at Midway Park have electrical outlets at their base allowing for electricity to vendor and entertainment pedestals. This makes sense as you think about it because during the holiday season, all the dozens of colorful, lit-up trees are not connected by miles and miles of extension cords criss-crossing the park. While it’s true that Broomfield offers its citizens a park within a ½ mile of every Photo courtesy of The City and County of Broomfield

residence, it’s Midway Park that steals the show – at least on September 16. There’s an attraction for everyone at Broomfield Days, Mr. Schnoor said. A variety of food and beverage (adult and other) vendors, entertainment, crafts, and unique household items – even activities for dogs – are all in the lineup at the annual event. Community fundraisers are a big part of Broomfield Days. Senior Resources of Broomfield kicks off the festivities Friday, September 15 with a 1:00 p.m. Golf Tournament. And the Lion’s Club is sponsoring BINGO at 7:00 p.m. at the Girl Scout Shelter Friday and Saturday nights as well as its muchanticipated Pancake Breakfast Saturday morning. (Go to www.broomfield.org/601/Entertainment-andSchedule for a complete list of activities and events.) “Once Friday evening and Saturday morning set-up are complete, the event runs itself,” Mr. Schnoor said. While the parade size has stayed pretty consistent through the years, Mr. Schnoor said one of the things he particularly enjoys about Broomfield Days is seeing people he hasn’t seen in a long time and kids that grew up here, coming back to enjoy the parade and park activities. Successful and coordinated behind the scenes planning; friends, family, and fun continue to make Broomfield Days one of our best community assets.

Winning Poster, Logo Designs Focus on Beauty of Broomfield By Kristen Beckman

The winning entries for the 2017 Broomfield Days poster and logo contests both visually display what Broomfield means to the women who created the designs.

J

an Gibson’s “Bird and Blooms” design won the poster contest sponsored by the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities. The poster will be on display at the Broomfield Community Center during the month of September, along with the other entries, and a limited number of copies will be available to purchase at Broomfield Days. Gibson is a longtime member of the Broomfield Art Guild and served as its president for several years. She does not have a formal background in art but began dabbling in various art mediums after her aunt encouraged her to pursue an interest in art. She started working in oil and has expanded to water color, pastels and acrylic. For her poster entry, Gibson chose water colors to depict her vision of Broomfield, which she said is focused on open spaces. “It’s near the mountains and there’s still wildflowers,” said Gibson. “That was my inspiration. That’s why I didn’t pick just a building of Broomfield. I wanted to give it an open spaces feel.” Gibson has often encouraged others to enter the poster contest, but this year is the first time she entered herself. “It’s been something that has always been on my wish list that I would love to be a poster winner,” said Gibson. “It’s always been a dream of mine. I hope it can be something people buy and hang in their front room and remind them of Broomfield.” Gibson has a special place in her heart for Broomfield. She survived a heart attack 12 years ago and credits Broomfield’s first responders and the local medical community with saving her life and giving her more years to paint. “That’s why Broomfield is special to me,” she said.

J

ackie Houle submitted the winning design for the logo contest. She is a graphic designer who has lived in Broomfield for seven years with her husband and three children. This is the first year Houle entered the contest, which had six entries for this year’s “We are Broomfield” theme. “I came across it on Facebook and thought I would give it a shot as it would be something I could have a little fun and get creative with,” Houle said. “My inspiration for the design was to visually capture what Broomfield is all about. We are such a great community of people, parks, pets, and businesses that embrace our beautiful location in Colorado at the base of the mountains.” Houle hand sketched ideas for her design and then used Adobe Illustrator to design it on a computer. “I am thrilled to have won this and grateful I had the opportunity to utilize my talents to give back to our community,” Houle said.

Broomfield’s Health and Human Services Department Offers Programs for All Ages By Kristen Beckman

Broomfield’s Health and Human Services (HHS) Department offers a wide variety of services to Broomfield residents with a broad focus on human, health, workforce, and senior services.

Photo courtesy of The City and County of Broomfield

O

n the human services front, the department provides eligibility-based services such as food, medical, and childcare assistance for residents in need, as well as child welfare and adult protection services. Broomfield also has its own foster care program and encourages residents interested in becoming a foster parent to call HHS at 720-887-2200. As part of its health programs, the department has been working collaboratively with community members, local non-profits, the faith based community, medical providers, and other regional partners on the Let’s Talk Colorado campaign. This campaign aims to reduce the stigma of mental health issues, said Debbie Oldenettel, director of the department. Residents can access ideas on how to discuss mental health on the website www.LetsTalkCO.org. The department is also participating in a regional Hidden Sugar campaign, www.hidden-sugar.org, to educate citizens about the amount of hidden sugar in various beverages. On a related front, the department collaborated with Good Samaritan Medical Center and the Paul Derda Recreation Center to launch the FitKids360 program, an evidence-based curriculum, aimed at helping overweight children and their families make healthier nutrition and exercise choices. The department’s Workforce Center has many resources for all Broomfield residents and employers. A resource center is available along with classes such as resume writing and interviewing skills. The department regularly hosts hiring events and facilitates networking. The department is also preparing youth for business success through its Youth Leadership Program, which connects kids with local business and community leaders. With a rapidly growing population of residents over the age of 60, senior services is a major focus area for the department, said Oldenettel. Broomfield has one of the fastest-growing populations of aging people in the Denver metro area, growing at a rate of 6.1% annually. “This is significantly impacting services offered throughout the community,” said Oldenettel. The Broomfield

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2017

Meals on Wheels program has grown 84.5% in the past 10 years, serving 24,078 meals in 2016. Similarly, the Easy Ride transportation program has more than doubled the number of trips provided to the Broomfield community with more than 20,000 rides in 2016. The department has occupied its new facility on Spader Way since April of 2016. Oldenettel said the new facility on the City and County campus is conveniently located near other public services and is more visible to the community and welcoming to residents. DOING SOME LANDSCAPI NG IN THE YARD THIS FALL? The City and County of Broomfield Stormwater Management Program would like to remind you that when conducting your landscaping projects, have your landscape material delivered in your driveway or find a staging area on your property. One of the leading causes of water pollution is landscaping material (rocks, compost, dirt, etc.) that is deposited in the curb and gutter. This kind of material can get washed away in stormwater runoff. The City and County of Broomfield works hard to maintain its storm sewer system and drainage ways. Storm sewers discharge directly into creeks, streams and ponds untreated. It is illegal and a violation of the Broomfield Municipal Code to dispose of or allow materials other than stormwater to discharge into the storm sewer system. Thank you for assisting the City and County of Broomfield in its efforts to keep our water clean. For more information, contact the Stormwater Management Program at 303.464.5648 or go to www.broomfield.org/wastewater

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2017

Mental Health Partners offers a variety of important services – again, regardless of ability to pay – including: • Medication only: Work with a Psychiatric Specialist One all-encompassing organization is Mental Health Partners. While there are offices throughout the Denvermetro region, Broomfield residents in crisis are encouraged to visit 100 Spader Way in the city and county’s Health and Human Service building (720-887-2200 or 303-443-8500). People with mental health struggles, especially mild symptoms of anxiety or depression, often go unrecognized by physicians and mental health professionals — and in some cases at great cost to individuals, families, and the public. Mental Health Partners provide services (regardless of ability to pay) to clients with depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorders, PTSD, psychosis, relationship and family issues, and to children, teens, and adults. “While we provide a tremendous amount and variety of services and help to the greater Boulder-Broomfield areas, we seem to remain a well-kept secret,” Cindy Cohagen from the Community Engagement Office of Mental Health Partners wrote in an email. The services the organization offers go far beyond just counseling. In addition to treatment and care, Mental Health Partners has a robust program to provide mental health first aid training in the community. The program breaks down stigma, educating community members on how they can help with potential mental health-related situations. Last year, 169 Broomfield community members received this training, including staff at Broomfield High School, some of the other Boulder Valley schools, and others at Discovery Church. Mental health is more than just the absence of mental illness. Being aware of your mental stability and resiliency is important because it affects every single aspect of your daily life and ability to function. Without awareness, it’s difficult to pinpoint why you are so stressed or having problems coping. Mental illness and resultant struggles affect families as well as individuals. Family members of people with mental and emotional challenges are at greater risk of a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues, including abuse and neglect. Moreover, just as physical health problems can lead to mental distress, mental health disorders can impair physical health. For example, impaired immune function or by causing problems sleeping. People with untreated mental illness may be at increased risk of committing violent crimes or, even more likely, becoming victims themselves.

Get Ready for

October 5th

By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

Celebrating its 8th year, Dancing with the Broomfield Stars will be returning to the 1STBank Center on Thursday, October 5. This exciting community event will be emceed by Belen De Leon of 9 News and this year the band FACE will perform while the ballots are being counted. All proceeds from the event benefit the Broomfield Community Foundation.

T

he Broomfield Community Foundation’s purpose is to enhance the Broomfield community by collecting contributions and providing support through grants to non-profit groups that help the citizens of Broomfield and the surrounding area. Their mission is to inspire the community to connect people with causes that meet the needs of neighbors through caring, compassion, and charitable giving. Eight Broomfield “Stars,” who are typically novice dancers from the Broomfield community, are paired up with dance instructors from local dance studios. Similar to the popular television show, the Broomfield Stars and dance instructors practice for several weeks and then showcase their rehearsed dance on the night of the event. This is a fun-filled evening with great food, entertainment, and a fantastic platform to give back to the community. Attendees vote on their favorite dancers by donating money. The couple who brings in the most money is declared the winners. If you are not able to attend

36

the event, you can still vote for your favorite dancer in advance via online donations. Karen Smith, the current and soon-to-be-retiring president of the Broomfield Community Foundation, will be dancing this year as her last act as president. Karen said, “After 14 years as the Executive Director of the Broomfield Community Foundation, I am retiring in October. It has been my pleasure to work with the various board members, donors, volunteers and non-profit organizations to which the Foundation gives grants. I have seen the Foundation grow during my tenure and believe that it will continue to grow in the future. Our tagline: One Community. Many Hearts. Unlimited Impact. reflects my passion for the Foundation’s status in Broomfield. Thanks to all who support the Broomfield Community Foundation. I invite all to come to Dancing with the Broomfield Stars to share the outstanding community spirit we share in Broomfield.”

After-School

for Busy Families By Family Features

A

fter a long day at school, kids need a chance to unwind. Often that down time involves physical activity, and a nutritious snack is the perfect way to make sure kids are ready to take on their free time with gusto then recharge to keep going until bedtime. A busy schedule may make the temptation for unhealthy convenience snacks strong, but it’s actually easier than you think to refuel with goodfor-you foods on the go. One simple trick: use kids’ favorite ingredients in unexpected ways. For example, these Chocolate Banana Muffins show that a glass isn’t the only way to enjoy chocolate milk.

Find more delicious after-school and after-sports snack ideas at www.TruMoo.com.

Far Beyond 911, North Metro Fire Serves Broomfield in Many Ways By Sara Farris

However, as part of its mission to build a safer community, North Metro Fire Rescue District provides a variety of free or low-cost services to citizens beyond emergency medical, fire, and rescue services. Every month, the Fire District offers free car seat installations and safety checks by appointment. Get Your Mammogram Close to Home When the world turns pink in October, it’s a great reminder for women to get their annual mammograms done. Thanks to a great community service provided by Saint Joseph Hospital, North Metro Fire is able to offer its citizens a convenient way to get their mammogram done. Saint Joseph’s Mobile Mammography Van is coming to Station 62 at 10550 Huron Street in Northglenn on October 6. Then on November 1, the mobile unit will come to Broomfield to provide its mammography services. Women can schedule an appointment between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on either day and be in and out within a half hour. Most insurance plans will cover the cost of the appointment, or Saint Joseph will work with residents to provide an affordable self-pay option. To schedule an appointment, call 303-308-3419. Walk-ins on either day are also accepted if scheduling allows. This fall, North Metro Fire encourages you to take advantage of any of its free services. Proposal Phase Continues for

City's Future “Heart of Broomfield” By Dan Powers

The energy and activity around Broomfield’s evolving Civic Center continue to ramp up, as city officials have selected four development companies to submit concept proposals for further review and public comment. From senior housing to brewpubs, and bakeries to festival space, a range of themes and designs are shaping the next round of decisions for this new “Heart of Broomfield.”

3D renderings of the proposed Civic Center site in the "Heart of Broomfield"

A

t the end of June the Broomfield City Council heard from City Manager Charles Ozaki that contracts have been provided to four planning and architectural firms: Johnson Nathan Strohe; DTJ Design; Civitas; and BOSS Architecture. Each will submit conceptual-level site plans and those plans then will be reviewed and discussed with the City Council and the community. Their plans will reflect the hundreds of ideas and suggestions from residents gathered earlier this year in focus groups and via email. Ideas such as coffee shops, locally-owned chef restaurants, a deli, ice cream shop, greeting card and gift shops, florists, women’s fashion boutiques, a beer garden, bakery, wine bar, and more – all with a common desire to create a vibrant gathering place, with options for music, small festivals, and a variety of entertainment

options. The idea-generation effort was managed by Urban Neighborhoods and City Street Investors via a process they called “Custom Crafting.” This is a deep dive into community needs and desires prior to any design efforts, meant to ensure the project includes what the community actually wants – and is also intended to help ensure financial success. One naming change suggestion may gain traction, which embodies the consistent theme of a community hub: the new “Broomfield Town Square.” The talents of the four firms selected cover

Following further detailed plans, a pro forma will be presented to Council regarding the financial investment necessary. There are not specific deadlines or meetings scheduled yet. The overall theme of the project is to create a mixed use activity center that will attract local residents to its locally-owned or otherwise desirable eateries and retail outlets, professional offices, and residential opportunities. The Council has expressed a desire that the project area, which is approximately 16 acres between 120th Avenue and Main Street, create a connection to the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library and Community Park. In a related decision, the Council recently approved borrowing money to build a brand new 87,500 square-foot Community/Senior Center, rather than repair the existing building, which is nearby the new Civic Center. The estimate of overall timing is for the first phase to be completed in 2019. Follow more detail online at www.broomfield.org.

the range of residential, commercial, transit, retail, landscape, and other attributes already emphasized by the City. The firm of Johnson Nathan Strohe emphasizes their trademark of Pragmatic Beauty; they believe “function and beauty are synergistic, and we don’t sacrifice one for the other.” They were recently spotlighted in 5280 Magazine as “The Architects Behind Some of Denver’s Hippest Hotels.” Another firm, DTJ Design takes pride in bringing sophisticated, intricate solutions to the nuances of each project; with an integrated design approach that embraces a shared vision, resulting in artful, renowned, and enduring destinations across the globe. Civitas brings together urban designers, architects, and landscape architects, with strategic plan proposals ranging from Boston’s City Wharf Parks to the Lisbon International Airport, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden. BOSS Architecture partners have worked for globally-renowned firms across the United States, and bring the extra realistic perspective of working at times directly as the builders of their designs. The range of designs and deep experience of these firms are expected to result in compelling and exciting concepts for the Civic Center. “We expect to get their development plans in September, and then arrange a series of community meetings in the fall as well as work with the City Council to determine what people do and don’t like about them,” said Assistant City Manager Kevin Standbridge. “The idea is to coalesce all these conversations into one final plan.” One, or perhaps more, of the developer proposals could be selected for further refinement following Council consideration.
