ike the pairing of a fine Chianti with homemade pasta, the union of Jimmy and Lasinda Crane, owners of Cranelli’s Italian Restaurant, was a match made in culinary heaven. Their passion for good food and great customer service began in their teens, with Jimmy falling in love with Italian food in his birthplace of Chicago, and Lasinda embracing all things food and service related. They have spent the past 20 years building a family and their careers around the restaurant industry. The Crane’s years of dedication paid off in 2013, when they opened their own restaurant the day after Christmas, using the family nickname of Cranelli’s. “It was truly meant to be,” said Lasinda about their lifelong endeavor. “Ever door, every window, just opened to us.” Realizing that good food is only part of the equation for success, the culinary duo put a strong emphasis on service and atmosphere. “It’s a family thing. When you walk in the door you either get a handshake or a hug,” said Lasinda. Cranelli’s serves traditional Italian fare, including pastas, strombolis, calzones and sandwiches, and they offer catering services for special events. They also invite diners to take advantage of their “Wine Dinners,” which include off-menu meals created
specifically for the evening, and paired with a fine wine. Seats fill up quickly, so reservations are required. The couple are also big supporters of students , and regularly hold “Give Back Nights,” where a percentage of their proceeds are donated to schools in their community. “It’s just incredible,” said Lasinda, of their success thus far. “When you love what you do it makes all the difference.”

Birds HOW TO ATTRACT WILD BIRDS TO YOUR YARD

Coloradoans have a strong passion for our beautiful state and for the eclectic wildlife that call it home. Perhaps that is why birding is a popular hobby for many in the area. While venturing on hiking trails or heading into the mountains can lead to the sighting of exotic birds, you can also attract wild birds to your very own backyard.

cott Menough, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited Nature Shop of Denver, says there are many benefits to this. For starters, building homes for humans can displace native birds, but creating a welcoming space in your backyard can create a new wild bird habitat for them. This can also lead to healthier birds in our environment. Menough points to a recent study that observed wild birds for three years, and reports showed a consistent pattern of overall health for birds where supplemental feeders were available. The birds had increased antioxidant levels, reduced stress levels, improved body condition index scores, strong immune systems, and more rapid feather growth. The study also reconfirmed that these feeders don’t create a dependency among free-living birds but simply provide supplemental food. Besides helping birds, Menough says it’s beneficial to humans to reduce stress by returning to nature. Birding is an inexpensive hobby that can easily be enjoyed on an evening after work. In addition to the enjoyment and entertainment it can offer, it’s great source for nature education, for both kids and life-long learners. “Learning about wild birds, ecosystems, species interactions, and animal behavior is unlimited when we attract birds to our yard,” Menough says. Colorado has more birds identified than any other non-border and non-coastal state with more than 500 birds species found within our borders. Some common local species you can attract include, House Finch, Black-capped Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Dark-eyed Junco, Bushtit, American Robin, Downy Woodpecker, Mourning Dove, House Sparrow, White-breasted Nuthatch, Broadtailed Hummingbird, Rufous Hummingbird, Eurasian Collared-dove, and Northern Flicker.
How to Get Started Creating your own backyard wildlife habitat isn’t hard at all. It’s a hobby for all knowledge levels, since you don’t need to know the names of the birds to enjoy them visiting your yard. There are four essential elements: food, water, cover and shelter, and a safe place to raise young. Food is provided by feeders and plantings, water is provided with bird baths and water landscape features, and cover along with a safe place for young comes from trees, shrubs, and bird houses.
How to Choose the Best Food When choosing food, Menough notes that quality is important. Opt for seed blends designed for Colorado birds that have no filler seeds and no shells. These “nowaste” blends attract birds that eat at different levels, both at ground or above. Plus, the no-waste food is less likely to cause weeds to grow under the feeder or leave shell litter that needs to be cleaned up. Filler seeds, such as milo, wheat, oats, and canary grass seeds, end up being more expensive since so much is not eaten and wasted. Menough also suggests bird food that is high in fat and protein. You might be tempted to reach for a slice of bread to feed birds, but Menough adds that since bread is mostly carbohydrates, it requires more energy for birds to acquire, more necessary water intake, and they’ll have to eat twice as much carbohydrates as fats and proteins to get the same energy benefit to keep those little metabolic engines going.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat grill to medium-high heat and place peppers over flame until charred. Repeat with limes, charring flesh side then set aside. In food processor, puree charred, roasted peppers 30 seconds. 2. In large mixing bowl, combine pureed red peppers, pepper sauce, olive oil, tequila, cilantro, chives, garlic, ginger, lime juice, agave and salt over ice and allow to stand 20 minutes. Remove from ice, submerge shrimp in marinade and allow to stand 30-40 minutes so marinade can fully penetrate shrimp. 3. S’mores Ice Cream
BIRTHDAY PIE

Finding time to celebrate family moments is always sweeter with a delicious ice cream dessert.
INGREDIENTS:

Nonstick cooking spray
•
8 Ounces milk chocolate, coarsely chopped, divided
•
2 1/4 Teaspoons canola oil
•
30 Chocolate wafer cookies
•
Pinch of salt
•
5 Graham cracker sheets, broken into bite-size pieces
•
6 Cups Breyers Natural Vanilla Ice Cream, softened
•
4 Large egg whites
•
1/2 Cup sugar
•
Birthday candles (optional)
1. Lightly spray 9-inch springform pan with 3-inch high sides with cooking spray. 2. In small bowl over simmering water, stir 3 ounces chocolate and oil until melted and blended. 3. In food processor, grind chocolate wafer cookies into fine crumbs (about 1 1/3 cups). Add chocolate mixture and pinch of salt and pulse until moistened. Press crumb mixture evenly onto bottom and 1 1/2 inches up sides of pan. Freeze for about 10 minutes, or until crust hardens. 4. In large chilled bowl, fold graham cracker pieces and remaining chocolate into ice cream. Pour mixture into frozen crust and smooth top. Freeze for about 8 hours, or until ice cream hardens.
Remove pie from pan and transfer to platter. Return pie to freezer. 5. In large bowl, using electric hand mixer on medium-high speed, beat egg whites until foamy. Gradually add sugar and beat for about 5 minutes, or until firm glossy peaks form. 6. Using large spoon, dollop meringue onto pie and spread decoratively, making sure no ice cream is exposed. Using kitchen blowtorch, torch meringue until browned all over. 7. Freeze pie for about 30 minutes, or until meringue has stiffened. Decorate with lit birthday candles, if desired. Slice and serve immediately.
