Protection for Your Family and Home from the Damaging Elements By Karen Carter

SCOTT MCBRIDE, FOUNDER AND OWNER OF POLYGUARD COVERS INC., LAUNCHED HIS FAMILY business in 2001 to provide “attractive and affordable protection for dangerous window wells.” Polyguard window well covers are custom made based on the size and shape of your window wells. Constructed of strong yet lightweight and virtually unbreakable UV-protected polycarbonate plastic, they are supported by sturdy aluminum braces. These braces are usually set to raise the covers in the back by 1-1/2 inches so air can circulate and snow and rain drain away from your home’s foundation. Polyguard covers look attractive and are strong enough to hold up to 350 pounds. McBride notes that Polyguard covers are made of a clear material that does not yellow and come with a lifetime warranty against breakage.

Polyguard covers also provide for an easy escape in case of emergency. Optional security features allow the cover to be latched to deter intruders from the outside but are simple to remove from the inside. For those that live in areas of high winds security kids are suggested to prevent the covers from being lifted by strong winds. McBride notes that while Polyguard covers are the best option for safety and

security, they also help keep “everything from trash to rodents to rain and snow” out of window wells. He adds that basement flooding is yet another important reason to purchase Polyguard covers over metal grates or other less effective window well covers. “When we get rain in Colorado,” he explains, “it all comes at one time and causes a lot of basement flooding.” McBride reports that at such times his company receives frantic calls from people looking for solid covers for their window wells to prevent their window wells from filling up from the rain. “We really encourage people to order before the rain, snow, and leaves start falling,” he says. “Window well covers are a cheap investment to protect against flooding compared to what it costs to repair damage due to flooding.” Polyguard also offers Metalguard steel mesh window well covers. To get an estimate for either style simply call with the width and projection at the greatest distance.

J & K Roofing Delivers Expertise and Customer Satisfaction By Kathy Vendegna

A roof replacement is a task that most people dread having to do, especially if the reason is because of a weather event. Whether it is because of recent hail storm, or just normal wear and tear, a roof replacement can truly be disruptive and cause stressful days and sleepless nights. However, it doesn’t have to be. J & K Roofing has been in business in the Denver area for 31 years. Since 1984, J & K has worked to consistently deliver on extensive knowledge and expertise in the roofing business and has built a company on the values of honesty, integrity and character. I have been honored to work at J & K roofing for three years now and have held the Executive Assistant position for two years. Having worked in customer service my entire career, for large and small companies alike, it is clear to me that J & K Roofing has made service a priority. The roofing business is extremely competitive. As such, J & K Roofing continuously challenges itself to grow and position the company as the premier roofer in the Denver metro area. An important part of this effort is to have some of the best estimators/salespeople in the industry as part of our team. Their extensive knowledge of the insurance industry and the relationships they have established within it are critical to customer satisfaction. The estimators of J & K Roofing walk the homeowner through the process of checking the roof, gutters and exterior for damage and meet with the insurance adjusters to

come up with a plan for repair or replacement. Their invaluable experience allows them to make certain that as a homeowner you are getting the most benefit from your insurance coverage. From guidance in choosing the correct roofing material to meeting all code requirements on installation, protecting the biggest investment most families have is all in a day’s work for J & K Roofing. A family-owned and family-run business, J & K Roofing is accredited with the Better Business Bureau and carries an A+ rating.

Ballooning Hot Air ON THE

Front Range By Kimberly Martin

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to float through the air like a balloon? It turns out that people have been doing just this since 1783, with one of the most ideal places being on Denver’s own Front Range. These flights, launching from Chatfield State Park (in Littleton) need to allow at least 3-4 hours for the whole experience.

If

you need inspiration for an airborne journey of your own, you may want to contact Fantasy Balloon’s Gery deKoevend. He is Denver’s resident expert and Pilot in Command (PIC), and definitely “the man” to find. DeKoevend has been flying hot air balloons for more than 40 years. We had the pleasure of meeting up with deKoevend and his crew one chilly winter morning just after sunrise in Chatfield State Park. As his crew prepared to take flight, we witnessed the strategy involved in launching (or inflating) this massive balloon off the ground. As the eager

patrons gathered around, sipping their coffee or champagne, it was evident how thrilled they were today to partake in this exciting experience. DeKoevend’s group today included two sisters from Boston and their father who were on a yearly getaway. The 20-something Boston nurses described how they had surprised their dad in Aspen at 2 a.m. this morning with a personalized, heart-felt poem followed by a champagne toast. With tears in his eyes, he recounted his great surprise. After driving for hours down to Denver, this family would become a team, helping deKoevend and his crew launch this massive balloon off the ground.

Rocky Mountain Hot Air, LLC is another ballooning company that has occupied Denver’s Front Range for many years, utilizing Denver’s Chatfield State Park as their launching pad. In addition to hot air balloon rides, this outfit offers flight instruction, hot air balloon parts or equipment, and is FAA certified in service and repair. On this same morning, Denver resident, Vicky, was here to celebrate her 50th birthday. As the sunshine yellow and orange beast began to fill with hot air, you could just hear the anticipation escalate amongst these four thrill-seeking friends. When the balloon was well on its way, it was time for the ground crew to begin their trek by vehicle as they followed the balloon up the road as backup. Back on the ground an hour or so later the fun continues with the champagne toast/tailgate party. According to tradition, this champagne toast originated in order to appease farmers. As hot air balloons became popular, French aristocracy discovered that local farmers didn’t like rich people setting balloons down on their land crushing their crops. Hence, champagne smoothed things over, and a tradition was born. As the patrons sipped their champagne and recounted what it felt like to float through the air, you get the feeling that they will be talking about this forever. When the day is over and the balloons are gently tucked away, the best part of the ride may not be the ride at all. After visiting with the balloon crews for several hours, it is evident that it’s the stories they have relished over these years of rides in the sky. One that clearly stood out was of a particular young girl who was dying of Leukemia. Continued on page 22 >>

A true hot air balloon lover, her bedroom was adorned with everything “hot air balloon.” When she passed away without ever going up for a ride, her parents came home to face the void of their daughter only to hear a loud noise coming from outside. The noise turned out to be a hot air balloon flying awfully close to their house, just outside her room. She may not have flown in a hot air balloon, but she was flying in one now.

BBQ Chicken Corn Bread Pie By Heather Cheney

FOR THE CORN BREAD • • • • • • • •

1½ C Bisquick Baking Mix 1/4 C + 2 tbsp sugar 1/4 C + 2 tbsp cornmeal 1/2 tsp baking powder 3/4 C water 1 lg egg 1/3 C melted butter 1/2 C frozen corn kernels, thawed

FOR THE TOPPING • • • • • • • • • • • • •

2 Tb Extra-virgin olive oil 1 lb. ground chicken (or about 2 cups cooked, shredded chicken) 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 medium yellow onion, chopped 1 small red bell pepper, seeded, chopped fine Salt & Pepper 1 Tb chili powder 1½ tsp cumin 2 tsp hot sauce 1 Tb worcestershire sauce 1 cup tomato sauce 3 Tb dark brown sugar 10 oz. shredded cheddar or provolone cheese

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. 2. In a mixing bowl, sift together dry ingredients and add in eggs, water, and butter. Mix until just combined. There’s no need to get the lumps out, over mixing will make your cornbread dry and tough. Pour batter into a greased 8 “ cast iron skillet or pie plate and bake until the cornbread becomes light golden in color, 12 to 15 minutes.

3. Place a medium skillet over med-high heat and add 2 Tb oil. Add the chicken and break it up with a wooden spoon. Once the chicken has crumbled and begins to brown, add the onion and bell pepper, sauté 5-7 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Season with salt and pepper, chili powder, cumin, and hot sauce. Cook for 5 minutes then add the worcestershire, tomato sauce, and brown sugar. Stir to combine and reduce the heat to low. Simmer until the cornbread sets up and begins to brown. Adjust seasonings to taste. 4. Remove cornbread from the oven and cover it with the BBQ chicken mixture, then sprinkle with cheese. Put the pan back in the oven and cook 5 minutes more to set the toppings and melt the cheese. Top with scallions and chopped parsley or cilantro and serve from skillet, cutting into wedges.

HELPFUL TIP: Realistic Security Deposit Withholding

If you withhold -anything- from SD, you must provide the tenant a “Disposition”, which itemizes all repairs that were done on a property. A couple of fine points: First… what if you do the work yourself, how do you account for expenses and time? Our advice: have a professional do the work and bill you. It removes subjectivity. Second, what can you actually withhold for? This brings up the subject of “normal wear and tear”, which strongly favors the tenant. Paint smudges, carpet wear and small nail holes are normally considered the owners responsibility. A judge would likely rule that paint and carpets more than 3 years old have deteriorated to the point that you can’t realistically withhold from the tenant. There are exceptions of course. What do you do if somebody smoked inside?

cleaning companies claim to be leather experts. Selecting one can be quite difficult. Leather restoration and care has always been a high quality niche vocation and art requiring extensive expertise, knowledge and time. There are few top-notch leather care craftspeople that possess the passion and old world craftsmanship skills along with the desire and ability to integrate new techniques. Inquire about the experience of the provider and technicians. One factor that makes a leather care company extraordinary is extensive hands on experience with outstanding on the job skills. Equally important are industry approved certifications and affiliations, a continuing education agenda, and knowledge of the entire leather industry from animal husbandry, tanning, finishing, and manufacturing to cleaning chemistry, color mixing and restoration technology. Low pricing (especially over the phone) usually results in compromised levels of service or up charges. Photos don’t tell the whole story, either. Similar to auto body or home restoration in this regard, there are just too many unique variables (in quality, types of leather, assembly, causal damage and condition) to be able to do a precise assessment without seeing, in person and entirety, the pieces requiring service. Get honest and accurate pricing up front. As in any business you get the quality and expertise you pay for.

TA K E A WA L K

Wild Side! o n

t h e

By Dan Powers

Less than an hour from the Denver metro, a surprising and wonderful oasis exists, perfect for a day trip that will have you thinking you’ve traveled around the world. The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg is a 720-acre refuge for lions, tigers, bears, wolves and other large carnivores, specializes in rescuing carnivores that were born in captivity and were victims of abuse, abandonment and various forms of inhumane care. Their stories, their recovery, their new home and their new lives make a visit here one of the most inspiring trips you’ll ever take in Colorado.

The operative word here is “sanctuary” – this is not a zoo. 28

Spotlight® Magazine | Summer 2015

T

hey have over 400 carnivores - from wolves to panthers to grizzly bears – and the animals’ stories are often heart-breaking. Pat Craig is the founder and Executive Director of The Sanctuary; his vision and tireless efforts cover over three decades of rescuing and caring for exotic animals. “Instead of simply locking an animal inside of a cage and calling it good, we chose to take the time to rehabilitate every animal so they would not only enjoy the company of others, but would also thrive as they roamed freely in large-acreage habitats,” explains Pat. We threw out all of the long-standing industry attitudes connected to animals merely being cared for just to survive and created a totally new way of caring for large carnivores.” Their unique observation system of elevated walkways – the “Mile into the Wild” - and large observation decks allows everyone to see the animals without disturbing them. The Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization with a mission is to provide every rescued animal with the very best life possible. In order to accomplish this, the Sanctuary has been designed so that rescued animals can go through an initial rehabilitation process and then be released into large acreage natural habitats. There they live freely with others of their own kind, free from the pain and degradation they endured prior to coming to The Sanctuary. “We’re one of the few places in the world permitted to have carnivores roaming in groups,” says Pat. In one of their largest rehabilitation efforts, they are preparing to add 33 lions rescued from circuses in Peru. They are also taking in lions and bears from a failed drive-thru park in Spain. Pat describes how this all got started back in 1979: as a 19 year old, he visited a friend working as a groundskeeper at a zoo. He saw how “surplus” animals were kept in cages behind the exhibits. “They were in cages too small for a dog, let alone a tiger,” says Pat. “I asked when the rotate them to give the animals a turn our front and he said ‘no, they don’t do that. Since other zoos have surplus animals too, so there’s nowhere for them to go. They probably will be euthanized’. I thought that was crazy. It was so disturbing, I thought about it every day.” The full story is even more fascinating; the short version is he pursued all the permits and licenses to turn his family’s property into what became The Wild Animal Sanctuary. “The idea that zoos and police departments would send some 19-yr-old in Colorado animals they couldn’t care for proved there was a crucial need,” he says. Over the years, passionate volunteers came on board, small fundraising efforts became more involved, more animals came and Pat says his commitment only continued to grow. “For me, my life changed dramatically when I chose to care for others. Beyond surviving, my sole

focus became the animals and their happiness. Not only saving their lives, but creating a life filled with joy and purpose,” explains Pat. “Similar to humans, the animals would only be surviving if all I did was provide them with food, shelter and basic safety. Giving them a purpose in life beyond coping with their human-imposed captivity became an integral part of what I, and everyone at the Sanctuary, chose to focus on. Then and only then, when we saw their lives being dramatically changed, did I and so many others find joy in our own lives.” The Sanctuary is essentially a volunteer-run organization, with nearly 150 volunteers and a staff of 40. They manage all the logistics, which are daunting if you think about it: 25,000 lbs. of food are doled out each week. Veterinary care, altercations and accidents with animals, thousands of visitors, an education program, Colorado weather, media and school field trip inquiries – this is no small animal welfare effort. The Sanctuary receives no government funding and relies entirely on donations and support from the general public. “Captive wildlife falls a little between the cracks as foundations often fund large habitat conservation efforts or domestic animal programs, and 95% of our budget comes from average people adopting animals, making a donation during the holidays, sending a gift after reading the newsletter, sources like that,” says Pat. Most donations are small – under $100 – and come from within Colorado, although they do have donors from across the country. In addition to direct donations, the Sanctuary hosts numerous fundraisers: For those who like to run, the June 6th and 7th Into The Wild Running Festival is a full weekend of running festivities: a 5K Family Fun Run/Walk, 5K & 10K races as well as a half, full and ultra-marathon. Yes, a 100-mile race! These are USATF certified courses, weaving between lion, tiger, bear and other wild animal habitats - it’s like running through the Serengeti or Black Forest, but in Colorado. There will be an array of vendors, food & live entertainment too. Check online for other special events to help support them. As 35 years, Pat is not slowing down: “People need to know about these animals and the captive wildlife crisis, and we hope people will come and see us.” He emphasizes the spirit driving all of their years of effort: the Sanctuary believes whole-heartedly in the saying “Saving one animal may not change the world. But surely - for that one animal, the world will change forever!”

The Wild Animal Sanctuary is located at 1946 County Road 53 in Keensesburg CO. Read visitor FAQs, see maps, ways to help, videos and much more at www.wildanimalsanctuary.org or call 303-536-0118.

The Sanctuary even has a brand new smartphone app that provides directions from your home, maps of the sanctuary to plan your visit, videos of the animals, announcements, event details, picture sharing and more. See details at https://vimeo.com/121927299.

Sylvan Learning Center Takes New Approach to Getting Students Ready to Learn By Jo Anne Grammond

Sylvan Learning Centers have a long tradition of helping struggling students with topics like reading, math and writing. But what if there’s a bigger obstacle standing in the way of a student’s success in school? Two local Sylvan Learning centers, owned by Ann Smith, are piloting a new approach to teaching which first addresses a student’s processing or attention issues. “Some students come to us with a lessened ability to learn, and a limited ability to process information,” Smith said. “We are taking a phase-one approach by introducing multisensory training to these students first. This process creates new neuropathways in the brain to increase a student’s ability to process and learn information.” The multisensory training is a 10-week program provided by Denver-based Integrated Listening Systems that combines highand low-frequency classical music with motion – such as standing on a balance ball or doing a hand-eye coordination activity – that, as Smith explained, “literally changes a student’s ability to learn.”

“We see huge improvements with this program in a student’s ability to process and retain information,” Smith said. “Once they improve through phase one, we can then put them into the traditional Sylvan program. If you put a student in the traditional program when they have processing and attention issues, it will take twice as long and cost twice as much. We are saving families time and money by first getting the brain ready for learning.” Sylvan serves students in pre-K through 12th grade. “We understand the struggle kids and families face when learning is difficult,” Smith said. “We have the tools to address those struggles. My commitment to every family is that we will do the best thing for your child in the fastest, most affordable way.”

Sylvan Learning Centers are located in Highlands Ranch at 9473 S. University Blvd. and in Parker at 10841 S. Parker Rd. For more information, visit www.sylvanlearning.com or call 303-220-8607.

CONNECT!

Running Wild is an annual race (5K and 1-Mile Fun Run) dedicated to raising awareness about wildlife endangerment in Africa and to raising donations on behalf of African wildlife conservation and anti-poaching efforts. Race day is June 20th, beginning on the campus of Regis University. For more information and to register, visit www.RunningWildAgainstExtinction.org.

THINK! “Don’t judge each day by the harvest that you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” -Robert Louis Stevenson (Free computer wallpaper featuring this quote can be found at our website: www.spotlightmagazine.net)

THRIVE!

Not just for picking up after Fido anymore! Those plastic bags you take home every week from the grocery store can have a second life in the home improvement realm as well. Next time you’re painting a room, slip a clean one over the paint tray before pouring the paint. It will eliminate the need for clean up, since it can be easily removed and discarded when the job is done.
