SNOWSHOEING COLORADO in

It
is often said that if you can walk, you can snowshoe. The sport doesn’t require expensive equipment or specialized knowledge, and trails appropriate for snowshoeing are highly accessible, making it a great activity for beginners and advanced trekkers alike. Snowshoes are flat frames that strap to boots and distribute the wearer’s weight so they don’t sink into deep snow. In addition to providing a great cardio and strength workout, snowshoeing also allows participants to get out and enjoy some of Colorado’s beautiful winter scenery. “It’s popular especially for people who don’t want to go skiing and want to beat the crowds when I-70 is packed,” said Kevin Capps, owner of Denver Mountain Guiding, which specializes in snowshoeing and ice climbing tours during the winter. “Colorado is full of great trails and cool places right next to Denver.”

BASIC GEAR Snowshoes can be rented or purchased from sporting goods stores or equipment rental shops that specialize in winter sports, and many snowshoeing guides also rent equipment as part of a package price with a tour. Three basic types of snowshoes are available for different terrain, including shoes for flat terrain, rolling or steep terrain, and mountain terrain. In addition to the actual snowshoe, waterproof snow boots with a high ankle are best for snowshoeing, and ski or trekking poles are useful, said Capps. Clothing should be lightweight and breathable, particularly if a vigorous climb is on the agenda. Dress or pack in layers, including a base layer of synthetic material or wool that will wick moisture away from the body, a layer of fleece or other insulating material and a waterproof, breathable outer layer. Lightweight, waterproof gloves and a hat, headband or balaclava are also essential. Capps recommends keeping warmer layers, extra socks and a heavy jacket in a backpack. “When you start, you want to be a little cold,” said Capps. “You don’t want to be warm when you start because once you get going, you’re going to get even warmer.”

CHOOSE A TRAIL You don’t have to travel far to find a great snowshoeing trail to accommodate your fitness level and experience. The Colorado Tourism Bureau lists several snowshoeing trails on its website, www.colorado.com/activities/snowshoeing. For freestyle snowshoeing, the bureau recommends trails near Estes Park in Rocky Mountain National Park; the 28-segment Colorado Trail between Denver and Durango; Grand Mesa near Grand Junction; Nederland, just west of Boulder; Glenwood Springs; and Steamboat Springs. For a more structured snowshoeing experience, the bureau suggests visiting a Nordic center at one of the major ski areas or a dude ranch that offers snowshoeing tours. Capps recommends beginners check out one of several parks not far from Denver. Staunton State Park, located six miles west of Conifer, offers accessible trails and beautiful scenery. Meyer Ranch Park in Jefferson County is another great option for beginners, because the trails are relatively flat and incorporate loops that can be used to lengthen a hike without having to travel a long distance on a straight trail. Guiding companies can also help beginners get started and sometimes will create experiences that incorporate snowshoeing with other activities. Capps said his company often receives requests to accompany snowshoers to mountain huts, such as those maintained by the 10th Mountain Division near Vail Pass. Another popular package his company offers combines snowshoeing with a winery tour at the Aspen Peaks Cellar in Bailey.
SAFETY Snowshoers should take basic precautions to ensure they stay healthy and safe during their trek. Sunglasses and sunscreen are often forgotten during winter activities, but the bright sun and glare off the snow can damage skin and eyes. In addition, be sure to bring water and snacks that won’t freeze to provide hydration and energy while on the trail. Snacks can be kept in pockets close to the body to keep them from freezing. When snowshoeing on trails, remember that the trail and landmarks may be covered in snow. Be prepared with a compass and trail map, and be sure to know which trail you are on and what direction you are going. If you aren’t experienced, Capps recommends keeping your hike short. Don’t count on using your cellphone to help if you get in a jam. Coverage is often spotty on trails away from populated areas. Check the weather before you set out, and always be aware of potential hazards along the way, including avalanche danger near steep slopes. As with any activity in the wilderness, it’s always better to go with someone rather than traveling alone, and have a first-aid kit, matches and other basic safety items on hand. “Don’t be nervous,” said Capps. “Get out there and try it. That’s what the mountains are there for — to get out and play in them.” 26

28-ounce can of diced tomatoes (with juices)

4 cups diced bell peppers

½ pound finely chopped chile peppers (I used mild Anaheims, but use what you like)
1. Add the chicken to a large stockpot and add the chicken, onion, tomatoes, peppers, chiles, garlic, chili powder, cumin, coriander, and salt. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat to simmer, and cook for 1 hour. Add the beans and gently stir together and simmer for another hour.

DENVER FIREFIGHTER’S MUSEUM If you always wanted to be a firefighter you can still do that at the Denver Firefighter’s Museum, which offers hands-on and interactive exhibits. Explore the history of firefighting in Denver. Kids can dress up in gear and they have their own fire pole to slide down. Stroll through the history of transportation and check out one of a kind cars, trains, and motorcycles and much more at the Forney Museum of Transportation. WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS? CONGRATULATIONS! You have decided to make 2016 your goal to get back into shape. Please know that you are in good company as more than 66% of Americans making their annual resolution focus on fitness. The downside is that by the 7-day mark almost 25% have already given up on their resolution and by the 12-week mark more than 50% have given up on their goal. Whether you are one that does or does not do a new yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resolution, chances are that weight loss is something you are considering and most likely may need some professional help. With so many choices in weight loss programs, it is hard to know which one is your right path towards sustainable weight loss and, ultimately, weight control. This article will compare the top four approaches to weight loss and offer a guide to help you determine which one is right for you. Always consult with your physician prior to starting a weight loss or fitness program.
2 THE WEIGHT LOSS CENTER
1 THE FITNESS CENTER
The fitness center is easily identifiable as it is loaded with fitness equipment. You will know you are in a fitness center because it will be packed for the months of January and February, only to slowly return to normal flow by April or May. The fitness center provides access to excellent equipment and, in some cases, group exercise classes. Whether you use your membership or not, it is up to you and know that the odds are not in your favor. According to an industry report, over 67% of fitness center or health club members do not actually use their membership.

The weight loss center typically consists of group discussion rooms or one-on-one private meeting rooms. In these rooms, you discuss your food intake and determine what is needed in order for you to lose the necessary pounds within the necessary timeframe. Most of the time, supplements are recommended and exercise is discouraged as the supplements will increase your respiration rate and, subsequently, your metabolic rate. However, with most weight loss centers, they are concerned with providing you quick results and so by the time you have reached your target weight you are no longer interested in learning the sustainability side of weight loss. The supplements go away and unfortunately 95% of the time, your weight will return within a short period of time from reaching your target. These types of center are focused on your nutritional intake and will use supplements successfully to allow you to achieve your weight targets within the shortest period of time.
3 THE LIFESTYLE IMPROVEMENT CENTER
This is a relatively new concept in the health and wellness industry. A lifestyle improvement center combines precise aspects of a weight loss center with certain aspects of a fitness center and surrounds it with emotional support via a personal health coach. A lifestyle improvement center typically offers group fitness and group educational courses, 1-on-1 health coaching sessions, nutritional guidance, and personalized physical fitness routines. I have recently been a patient at Cancer Centers of Colorado - Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette. I cannot express enough how grateful I am to have been cared for by the staff at Good Samaritan and been the recipient of financial assistance through the Good Samaritan Medical Center Foundation. Upon getting the diagnosis of breast cancer, events in my life went from bad to worse and had a devastating effect on my ability to meet my basic life needs. The staff cared enough to assess my financial situation which was not very good and a considerable source of stress, and the Foundation stepped in to help. I cannot begin to express the gratitude I feel for the financial support of Good Samaritan Medical Center Foundation.
