7:00p-9:30p at Daniels Gate Clubhouse, 6450 Daniels Gate Road, Castle Pines. PSO Goes to the Movies: Have you ever tried watching a movie with the volume on mute? It just isn’t the same without the music. The score of a film can change the entire tone and meaning of the story. What would Jaws be like without that menacing twonote theme as the shark stalks our heroes beneath the waves? What would Star Wars be like without its epic and dramatic theme? One thing is certain; these iconic films would be drastically different without their masterful scores set behind the scenes. Just in time for the 2016 Oscar© Awards Show, the Parker Symphony Orchestra invites you to experience cinematic musical magic as they perform highlights from OscarWinning films as PSO Goes to the Movies. 7:30p at PACE Center, 20000 Pikes Peak Ave., Parker. Visit. www.ParkerArts.org for more info and to purchase tickets.
3 MARCH Human Viruses and Vaccines – Who Wins the Race?: Presented by guest speaker Dr. Sonia Flores, Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado-Denver, this lecture will focus on the biology of known human viruses and how they have evolved to escape our own defenses. It will conclude with a discussion of how vaccines trigger an immune response that will recognize the virus as a threat and neutralize it before it can cause disease. 6:30p at PACE Center, 20000 Pikes Peak Ave., Parker. The Parker Cultural and Scientific Commission is pleased to sponsor talks on topics that impact Colorado citizens and residents of Douglas County. The intent of these talks is to increase the understanding of how science and technology address current and future issues facing our community. The sport doesn’t require expensive equipment or specialized knowledge, and trails appropriate for snowshoeing are highly accessible, making it a great activity for beginners and advanced trekkers alike. Snowshoes are flat frames that strap to boots and distribute the wearer’s weight so they don’t sink into deep snow. In addition to providing a great cardio and strength workout, snowshoeing also allows participants to get out and enjoy some of Colorado’s beautiful winter scenery. “It’s popular especially for people who don’t want to go skiing and want to beat the crowds when I-70 is packed,” said Kevin Capps, owner of Denver Mountain Guiding, which specializes in snowshoeing and ice climbing tours during the winter. “Colorado is full of great trails and cool places right next to Denver.”

Spotlight® Magazine | Winter 2016
BASIC GEAR Snowshoes can be rented or purchased from sporting goods stores or equipment rental shops that specialize in winter sports, and many snowshoeing guides also rent equipment as part of a package price with a tour. Three basic types of snowshoes are available for different terrain, including shoes for flat terrain, rolling or steep terrain, and mountain terrain. In addition to the actual snowshoe, waterproof snow boots with a high ankle are best for snowshoeing, and ski or trekking poles are useful, said Capps. Clothing should be lightweight and breathable, particularly if a vigorous climb is on the agenda. Dress or pack in layers, including a base layer of synthetic material or wool that will wick moisture away from the body, a layer of fleece or other insulating material and a waterproof, breathable outer layer. Lightweight, waterproof gloves and a hat, headband or balaclava are also essential. Capps recommends keeping warmer layers, extra socks and a heavy jacket in a backpack. “When you start, you want to be a little cold,” said Capps. “You don’t want to be warm when you start because once you get going, you’re going to get even warmer.”

CHOOSE A TRAIL You don’t have to travel far to find a great snowshoeing trail to accommodate your fitness level and experience. The Colorado Tourism Bureau lists several snowshoeing trails on its website, www.colorado.com/activities/snowshoeing. For freestyle snowshoeing, the bureau recommends trails near Estes Park in Rocky Mountain National Park; the 28-segment Colorado Trail between Denver and Durango; Grand Mesa near Grand Junction; Nederland, just west of Boulder; Glenwood Springs; and Steamboat Springs. For a more structured snowshoeing experience, the bureau suggests visiting a Nordic center at one of the major ski areas or a dude ranch that offers snowshoeing tours. Capps recommends beginners check out one of several parks not far from Denver. Staunton State Park, located six miles west of Conifer, offers accessible trails and beautiful scenery. Meyer Ranch Park in Jefferson County is another great option for beginners, because the trails are relatively flat and incorporate loops that can be used to lengthen a hike without having to travel a long distance on a straight trail. Guiding companies can also help beginners get started and sometimes will create experiences that incorporate snowshoeing with other activities. Capps said his company often receives requests to accompany snowshoers to mountain huts, such as those maintained by the 10th Mountain Division near Vail Pass. Another popular package his company offers combines snowshoeing with a winery tour at the Aspen Peaks Cellar in Bailey.
SAFETY Snowshoers should take basic precautions to ensure they stay healthy and safe during their trek. Sunglasses and sunscreen are often forgotten during winter activities, but the bright sun and glare off the snow can damage skin and eyes. In addition, be sure to bring water and snacks that won’t freeze to provide hydration and energy while on the trail. Snacks can be kept in pockets close to the body to keep them from freezing. When snowshoeing on trails, remember that the trail and landmarks may be covered in snow. Be prepared with a compass and trail map, and be sure to know which trail you are on and what direction you are going. If you aren’t experienced, Capps recommends keeping your hike short. Don’t count on using your cellphone to help if you get in a jam. Coverage is often spotty on trails away from populated areas. Check the weather before you set out, and always be aware of potential hazards along the way, including avalanche danger near steep slopes. As with any activity in the wilderness, it’s always better to go with someone rather than traveling alone, and have a first-aid kit, matches and other basic safety items on hand. “Don’t be nervous,” said Capps. “Get out there and try it. That’s what the mountains are there for — to get out and play in them.” 22

EXERCISES to Prepare & Maintain Your Body for
WINTER SPORTS By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS
Colorado is an active state all throughout the year, yet many residents literally count down the days until the ski slopes open. Ideally, you should be preparing for ski and snowboard season during the fall but many people find themselves hitting the slopes without proper preparation. The day following the first trip up the mountain can often be painful, as muscles are exhausted and sore. Even if you did not train for the winter sports season, there are still many exercises you can do throughout the season to stay healthy and hopefully prevent injury. Add the following five exercises into your current workout routine to be able to hit the slopes or trails all season long!
CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE: Cross country skiing and shoe showing are aerobic based and definitely require aerobic endurance. Though skiing and snowboarding might be considered more of an interval workout since you are skiing down the mountain for a short period of time and then sitting in a chair to get back up the mountain, many people ski or snowboard for hours and hours. Regardless of your winter sport, if you have not exercised since last season or do not currently do any cardiovascular exercise, a day on the slopes or on the trails will be absolutely exhausting. You will definitely want to build an aerobic base and continue to work aerobically throughout the season. If you did not workout in the fall prior to ski season, it is not too late to gain some additional aerobic base. Try working out at a medium to challenging pace for 30-45 minutes, 3 times a week to help you build this base. This can include jogging, cycling, swimming or some type of cardio based group fitness class.
SQUATS AND LUNGES: Squats and lunges are two of the best lower body exercises to build strength in the quadriceps, glutes, and hamstrings. Squats are important for almost any sport but winter sports are specifically lower-body focused. Squats engage almost every leg muscle and the squat position is basically the same position that is held while skiing. By building strength and muscular endurance using squats, you will be engaging and therefore strengthening the same muscles used while skiing. Lunges are also an essential exercise for leg strength and important for performance in many sports. The biggest difference between the benefits of lunges vs. squats is lunges have a balance component since you begin the exercise by lifting one leg. This move is important especially for skiers since balancing on one leg is an important aspect of skiing. Both of these exercises should be an essential component of your strength training all year long. 32
Spotlight速 Magazine | Winter 2016
CROSS TRAINING: Cross training, referring to training in any other sport or activity than you normally compete in or participate in on a regular basis, is really essential for staying healthy regardless of the season. Lori Duncan, DPT, MTC, CPT and owner of LoriDuncanPT, LLC, currently located at Flatiron Physical Therapy in Erie, states “Cross training is the key for sports conditioning and injury prevention. Although this may seem like a catch-all phrase, it is the best advice I give my patients. Most sports are dominant in one position. For skiers and snowboarders it’s a squat position and for tele-mark (similar to cross country) skiers it’s a lunge. It is important to strengthen the muscles in Cross training is the key for the sport position, but also imperative sports conditioning and injury to move the body in multiple planes.” prevention. Although this may Lori is a big advocate of yoga, Pilates, seem like a catch-all phrase, it is sports conditioning classes or even the best advice I give my patients. the popular dance classes. Lori believes that “Cross training creates body awareness and stimulates our muscle tissue in various ways. This combination is the magic formula for injury prevention.”
CORE WORK: The ‘core’ can be described as extending from your neck to your knees and includes your entire torso, low back, glutes, and hamstrings. The core muscles contribute to spine stability and give you the ability to flex, side bend, and rotate. Without a strong core, your balance can be off and you can compensate by putting additional strain on your supporting musculature which can lead to an injury. One of the best core exercises includes a plank. Try incorporating 3 sets of 30 second planks into your workout.
Without a strong core, your balance can be off and you can compensate by putting additional strain on your supporting musculature which can lead to an injury.
FLEXIBILITY WORK: Flexibility work is often an overlooked part of many exercise routines as many people tend to skip this important part of the workout. However, flexibility can lead to better performance and lack of flexibility can make even daily activities more difficult to perform. Even if you feel you are not flexible, this can be improved with training. Flexibility training can increase mobility which is important in most sports, but specifically if you have tight muscles that you have not used in a long time (for example, since last ski season) you are more likely to tear these muscles. Spend 10-15 minutes at least 2-3 times a week stretching all your major muscle groups or ideally attend or complete a yoga workout once a week. Immediately following a workout when your muscles are warm is the best time to stretch. If you are stretching separate from a workout, make sure you are properly warmed-up.
Regardless of your winter sport, if you have not exercised since last season or do not currently do any cardiovascular exercise, a day on the slopes or on the trails will be absolutely exhausting. You will definitely want to build an aerobic base and continue to work aerobically throughout the season.
The winter sport season is finally here! Make sure to incorporate the exercises mentioned to stay healthy and enjoy Colorado’s beautiful mountains all season long. Always consult your physician prior to starting a new exercise program. Visit us online at: www.spotlightmagazine.net
