Dark chocolates help ease emotional stress Lenie Rollin Staff Writer

The “chocolate cure” for emotional stress is getting new support from a clinical trial published online in ACS’ Journal of Proteome Research. It found that eating about an ounce and a half of dark chocolate a day for two weeks reduced levels of stress hormones in the bodies of people feeling highly stressed. Everyone’s favorite treat also partially corrected other stressrelated biochemical imbalances. Sunil Kochhar and colleagues

note growing scientific evidence that antioxidants and other beneficial substances in dark chocolate may reduce risk factors for heart disease and other physical conditions. Studies also suggest that chocolate may ease emotional stress. Until now, however, there was little evidence from research in humans on exactly how chocolate might have those stress-busting effects. In the study, scientists identified reductions in stress hormones and other stress-related biochemical changes in volunteers who rated themselves as highly stressed and ate

dark chocolate for two weeks. “The study provides strong evidence that a daily consumption of 40 grams [1.4 ounces] during a period of 2 weeks is sufficient to modify the metabolism of healthy human volunteers,” the scientists say.

New specie found in RP Maricel B. Suganob Staff Writer

A dragon-sized, fruit-eating Lizard in the trees on the Northern Philippine Island of Luzon has been confirmed as a new species, scientist reported on Tuesday. The brightly colored forest monitor Lizard can grow to more than six feet in length but weighs only about 22 pounds (10 kg), said Rafe Brown of the University of Kansas, according to him this Lizard is a fruit-eater and its only the third fruit –eating Lizard in the world. “Discovering such a large vertebrae species is extremely rare” added Brown. The Lizard, a new species of the genus Varanus, is skittish and able to hide from humans, its primary predators, which could explain why it has gone undetected by scientists for so long. Biologists first saw photographs of a skinny Lizard last 2001, but the species at that point had never been given a scientific identification. DNA analysis showed that there was a deep genetic divergence between the new Lizard, which is also a fruit-eater but lives on the

southern end of Luzon, rather than the northern end where the forest monitor Lizard lives. These findings were published in the Royal Society Journal Biology Letters, with additional work by scientists in the Philippines and Netherlands. The 6.5-foot (2-meter) -long lizard was first spotted in 2004 in the Sierra Madre mountains on the main island of Luzon when local researchers saw local Agta tribesmen carrying one of the dead reptiles. But it took until last year to determine it was a new species. After capturing an adult, researchers from the University of Kansas and the National Museum of the Philippines obtained DNA samples that helped confirm the lizard was new to science. “We hope that by focusing on protection of this new monitor, conservation biologists and policy makers can work together to protect the remaining highly imperiled forests of northern Luzon,” Rafe Brown, leader of the team that discovered the new species and curator of herpetology at the University of Kansas, said in a statement..

For the second consecutive year, the Philippines broke the Earth Hour world record in terms of participation, with 1,076 towns and cities joining the 60-minute light off to save Mother Earth Saturday night. Is this USEP? INVERBATI Jona Mae Engalan You might wonder what the abbreviation USeP means, fortunately 9 out of 10 students know this. Perhaps it was existed and yet happened last semester in our university. Yes, I know that at this moment you have an idea on this abbreviation; it only means “University of Slow Enrollment Process.” Undoubtedly every student will agree on this abbreviation since they also experience this very unfortunate reality. I remember those sweats that flow beside each faces. Undeniably most of the students’ population came from different localities and least era came from this city. What we bothered most is the enrollment process that runs for at least three days, knowing the fact that it was a burden on the part of the students most especially to the boarders who only budget their consumption within the range date schedule of enrollment, expecting the fact that they will be able to enroll at that said schedule. Another factor is for those who are constantly going home, it is difficult

Generally speaking, it is never been so easy to enter USEP especially that whenever you are a student in this particular institution, you are bound to be a brainy one. But, what are their bases upon saying this?Traditionally, before we enter colleges we must have to take our entrance examination. We are tending to recall what we learned from yesterdays. Differently, our institution requires enrolling “English Bridge Program” to those students who did not pass the English plus test still willing to run the ladder of success. Its main objective is to build high quality education from the first step of learning in which it molds student’s needs. Consider that during school days, Usepians were an absorbent paper-ordinary yet simple. In a way that most of them went school looking so plainly and even appear like they just respecting the use of clothes and cleaning of selves. Try to figure out, after school hours most of their time spent into libraries, internet laboratory, café and other leading resources where they can find references and do their given assignments. Unfortunately, almost have no time for rest, meals, sleep and even glance in the mirror just for a moment. After all those sacrifices bad shipping happens. Many got disappointed from these deadly interventions such as corrupting of files, accidental viruses, turning off of electricity during working plus the shortage of money where you need three pesos for printing but you only have two pesos in the pocket. Only you can do is to pray for miracle; cry out loud; or live in despair. As everyone where asking, do teachers aware as regards to these agony we are trying to vanish? Does the curriculum have any connection why students suffer much? Or should students make any move and manage their activities to reassure healthy lifestyle? In this scenario, let us gather everything we can do to make things worthy. Do not waste time. Plan your commitments. We need to prove that even we inclined to be an ordinary tissue, never grab the opportunity to trash you out. Besides, this simplicity warned us not to take it easy rather to watch on how usepians work for their achievements and goals in life. Thus, if you have the determination, grab it because though it’s hard from the start; always remember that everything that is hardwhile is worthwhile.

to coming back to school because not all the students belong to the middle class and that their parents got worry about this, especially that we are facing financial crisis. Moreover, there are students who travel down from rural areas for enrollment purposes and staying here beyond their budget is quiet alarming. I suggest that they may hire or add staff that will assist the enrollment since we are aiming a fast process. In addition, the system used in the enrollment during my first year first semester is quit effective because for only one day I was officially enrolled and yet they cater the students within the target schedule. I think it was quit difficult on the part of the staff since the Mabini unit also conducted their enrollment here in Tagum campus. In as much, we cannot just rely and depend on one person only to do this heavy task because somehow they also get tired. Therefore, two is better than one.

Flag Ceremony: Is it still important?

RETROSPECT Maricel Suganob Every Monday before the classes start, USeP conducts a flag ceremony participated by the students of different department and school staff. It is actually expected that many students will join the ceremony for we were trained already and we practiced this activity since we were in elementary. But how is it happened, that only few were present when there were more than a thousand of students enrolled in this school? The ceremony starts at 7:45a.m-8:00 a.m. and everybody is required to join for there will be an attendance just after the activity. But as I have observed, still, many students come late and even

find another way just to ignore the ceremony. Many students were talking with their classmates and doing something, roaming around while the ceremony is going on. Students act like nothing happened when actually they noticed it has started. There is being a penalty to those education students who can not join the flag ceremony as imposed by the OFE .But, it doesn’t work, for them five pesos is just a little thing. We are not talking about how much is the penalty but we are just concerned of the attitudes shown by the students. Is the respect of the youth to our Philippine flag vanishing?

A Student’s Image

PRIVATE LIVES Irish Mae Fajardo Students are those who come to school everyday. One’s image is beautified by wearing a clean and complete school uniform. Students are obliged to follow the rules of the school and should prioritize his/her studies. They should listen to their teacher and do their assignments and projects ahead of time. Looking forward, an intelligent student are those positive thinker, they learn by their own and even make corrections to their teacher. They able to find ways as a solution to every problem in fact, it is like a mathematical equation that needs formula to cope up to its answer. It is good to see that students are striving hard. In which they build to have a brighter future to the next generation. However, Education is the best gift we

can ever give to ourselves. Thus, students are unique individual in which they posses different skills and abilities. In concern to their mental capacity, they have their multiple intelligences that will help to reach what they dreamed of. Being a student is like you are in a trip in which you must have to pass way to reach your destination. And if you are at the top, there is more opportunity waiting for you. It is a personality that every student should posses, especially to children. It is an image of a real model that has a goal in life. A students’ life is not so easy, it is complicated and more sacrificing, and the reality of life is seen to their image though student must have to be patient, strong and responsible in order to have a brighter future.

In search of a

committed mentor Jona Mae Engalan

Committed teachers do not belong to endangered species. They are still around. When teachers are serious, responsible, dedicated, generous, focused, consistent within principles, and do not measure any little move, by how they are paid, or by the honor they can reap, I think you know that they live by commitment. Committed teachers know what the student needs. They nurture knowledge, abilities and skills of every student. They’re not just the one who comes in class and give tasks, assignments, requirements, etc. to the students. They have that intimate relationship with their every student, they know what kind of students they have and heart fully accepts their differences. Committed teachers are those responsible, responsible enough in molding the young minds of the young children. The one who teaches lesson that are not just found in the book, but teaches values and real life experiences. They are the role model inside the classroom and even outside the school premises which the students respect.

A committed teacher respects the different intelligences of the students and knows how to deal with them in a meaningful way. They are not the one who insults students due to their weak performance inside the classroom. They have an understanding heart. We all know that they are just around us; committed teachers are around the corner of our schools. A true committed teacher is the one who considers teaching as a commitment rather than a work.

S P I T

then, the most hated subject of almost all students. Students hated or frightened to this subject due to its complexity. They have a hard time in understanding the concept of the lesson and the process of solving mathematical problems. Thus, they tend to fail the subject aside of getting a low grade. Here are some ways on how the students study for their math test: 1. Make a list of specific objectives that will be on test. 2. Find examples and problems for each objective you have listed and work them. 3. Learn definitions of new words. Try writing these definitions from memory to see if you really know the word. 4. Begin to review the objectives several days before the test. Review a few of them each

day. 5. Look for and try to recall general patterns. Study previous quizzes. Look in particular problems that you did incorrectly. 6. Select problems from past homework assignment (not just easy ones). Rework these problems. Compare the results with your original homework results. 7. Don’t just scan your homework and previous tests. Instead, pick up a pencil and do the problems again. 8. Concentrate on objectives that gave you trouble on previous tests. Work problems that you did incorrectly the first time. Thus, Mathematics is a lovable subject, we just have to love it and play well with it. We have to practice applying the Mathematical Rules in as many situations as we can.
