As a recent M.Arch graduate, I spent most of my time in the studio. I try my best to get knowledge and put my thoughts on each design. Learning architecture has become a great fun for me. Architecture is a magical subject which offers me the chance of cultural experience and re-cognition. In the pursuit of learning, I found myself easily moved by details in a successful architecture. A sidewalk with good views, a atrium that holds a varities of interactions, even a handrail of a stair may contains a considerable design that shows the thinking, the humanity of a architect. During my studies, I try to reconsider the basic principles of architecture design, each time when I was doing my project, I pay lots of attention to the culture context, the useser’s needs and attempt to create a space or even a field that will integrate all the factors within the site and make various activities interact with each other. Although consturctions nowadays are still the symbol of wealth, symbolic value is more important than usage value. I still get moved by the humble design that treasure the original meaning of design. After all, humans are the subject of architecture, their activities influence the form of the space which in return affect the physical and psychological conditions. Architecture should not be the monster today that uses unique even absurd space to excite the nerves of people, they should begin with fully consider the human needs, and creat a space that will make their life better. And this is my first priority of consideration. In a broader way, a city consisted of people, constructions, greenlands, etc. is a more complex space that have many factors such as economy, social progress, political elements, etc. Although these factors are important for a city, it still needs us architects to consider the humanity side. How to make the city enjoyble and functional for the citizens is the questions that I still concern.

SITE ANALYSIS
BACKGROUND ANALYSIS
The Xing City has a very long history dates back to two thousand years ago MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION and go through several dynasties. Therefore the city has a rich heritage of traditional chinese architecture. And the old city wall is still remained in WALKING the city. The main means of transportation in the city is walking and cycling. Xing city is also well known for its natural views and spring water. CYCLING
The site is surrounded by large area of A. mass green land. The east side also face the long coast line. On the west lies a B. small lake. The road system is obvious. There are three main attraction sites that may have influences on the site.
Viewpionts And Lines Of Sight The site face a very long coast line. Along the seaside, there are seceral historic sites and tourist attractions. In order to fully take advantage of the beautiful view, I drew several main lines of sight.

Based on the various attraction sites and factors that will affect the formation of plan, I selected several main points as the reference. 04 Portfolio of Liuyi Yan

FEEL THE SCALE OF THE STREET The entrance of the hotel is located in the upper mountain area. Before entering the hotel, customers go upstairs along the cliff. This indoor space is designed in the dimension of the local street scale. When walking up and down and turning around, people would feel like walking in the city streets, but can also view the landscape around outside the windows. It’s not only a passage but a place to stay and enjoy the beauty of the beautiful views outside. By introducing the street scale into the inner space can thus make the customers feel enjoyable in walking in the inner space.

To avoid the cross of flow lines and make each space function well, the plan is carefully arranged.

Plan Partition
Based on the viewpoints, I selected the main lines of sight, connected them to form the axises that may contribute to the formation of the outside mass that adapt to the axises.
With the restrain of the axises, the site plan is divided into different pieces. And each one may bear a specific function. In this way, various functions can interact with each other.
We started our first field trip to this site and found several characters of this site area. Although the Xueyuan Square is an important traffic junction, however, it lacks the aggregation of people. People nowadays only take this place as a path that they pass by everyday, but seldom do they actually use this place for entertaining. Located in one side of the square, the designed culture center is a place that should provide a public place for the citizens to take different activities. And make this place a more lively one.

Based on the different functions listed, each one requires a specific space. In order to combine these different space into a unified mass, I introduce mutiple centers into this building mass, and the formation is based on the axises and viewsights around the site using different energy-saving strageties.

The master plan of the Culture Center is then formed from the axises got from the survey. In order to make the square a more pleasant place, the building mass moves back and gives way to the public open space. Straignt liner road and radial road are combined so that the front space is either convenient for the passers by and interesting for the citizens who wants to stay in this space for activities. To solve the problem of height difference, the mass and the road also adapt to the landscape, and make use of the height difference to creat characteristic outside and inside space. Ground Floor Plan
I intend to change the old form of space connection in to a more flexible and more interactive one. To fulfill this goal, I obscure the boundries of different functional spaces, and make related spaces as close to each other as possible. Sometimes, the spaces may even overlap with each other a little bit. This kind of vague space can intrigue unexpected activities among people. To avoid the lost of awareness in this building, each functional space is also self-centered and has it’s own traffic system. Thus make each space also relatively independent.

DALIAN CLIMATE RESEARCH
Located in northern mid-latitudes, Dalian area is warm temperate semi-humid monsoon climate with both maritime climate characteristics. The solar radiation throughout the year is relatively large, and the atmospheric circulation is mostly subtropical westerlies. So climatic characteristics of the region are: four seasons, mild climate, humid air, precipitation concentrated, monsoon obviously and large wind.
DALIAN CLIMATE RESEARCH WORKING PRINCIPLE IN SUMMER During summer, the blind is let down to protect the interior from exvessive sunshine and to cut off the natural heating coursed by solar radiation. Occassionally, the air extractor should be switched on automatically and negative pressure appears in the air chamber to draw the air from interior through the gap. The air in the chamber would rise after heated then get exhausted by the air extractor. Such air circulation would reduce the temperature difference of the air between the chamber and the interior greatly. As a result, the energy consumption of cooling system could be lowered.
WORKING PRINCIPLE IN WINTER During winter, the blind is rolled up and the air in the chamber could be heated by solar radiation. The air extractor is shut off and the air could stay in the chamber as a buffering layer. The temperature difference of the air between the chamber and interior would be smaller. As a result, the energy consumption of heating could be lowered.

SOLAR ENERGY Solar panels are set on the roof, according to the photoelectric effect, solar energy is transformed into electricity to provide the building power system, which is popular in sunny area.
ROOF GREENERY The climate of Dalian is warm and wet, that’s why people always feel uncomfortable during the summer. We select the roof greenery to change such situation. Plant transpiration helps to lower the temperature and provide a better inner environment.

HEAT EXCHANGE This system can make air exchange heat with the soil underground which keep constant temperature, about 25 degree, throughout the year. So this machine is just like a central air-condition that can provide fresh air and keep the indoor temperature at a comfortable degree.

HERITAGE OF THE HISTORY By abstracting two different kinds of urban textures we can get two kinds of patterns, and from superposition of two patterns we can get a new order of logic, which can be used in formation of the master plan. The mixture of two girds represent the culture transition during the time when the heritage of the colonization is abandoned.

[SITE ANALYSIS] Zhongshan Square features of a radial pattern. A late classical architecture mix, consisting of multi-story buildings, distributes in the innermost circle. From the second outer circle, the buildings tend to be higher as futher from the square center. This leads a reversed shell-shape space for the square-centered area. To make a unique landmark for riching the viewing experience from the square, the building needs to have a character.

GENERATION PROCESS First extended the business street into this site and revise the site according to the gird-mash. Abstract the two kinds of the urban texture as a gridding square and unify each of the elements around as the podium. Then let the tower building and the exhibition bulk give way to the public space to make sure that the mass of the structure is comfortable for the pedestrain. As a result, this commercial complex and office tower building is regarded as the mixture of the elements around , also as a landmark that attact people.
