River Walk

A beautiful spring day is ideal for a stroll down the River Walk, with its many enticing restaurants. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on the best these dining spots have to offer, so we’ve created a rundown of the area’s signature dishes and drinks. Serving a dish that’s described as “almost as well-known as the Alamo,” Paesanos is an iconic San Antonio spot open since 1969 that’s beloved for its Shrimp Paesano ($12.95). The dish of sautéed shrimp served over angel hair pasta with a garlic-cream-butter sauce sounds simple enough, but one taste and you’ll understand why it’s gained generations of devotees. Just about every restaurant on the River Walk has outdoor seating along the River Walk, but Casa Rio was the first to set up tables and chairs outside. The can’tmiss menu item here is classic Tex-Mex enchiladas ($8.45 - $9.85), filled with cheese, beef or chicken and served with red sauce made in the traditional style with ancho chile paste or with a verde sauce of tomatillos. The recipes are about as authentic as Tex-Mex gets. At Bella, things take a Mediterranean turn with some New American style thrown in. The eatery’s signature appetizer, Eggplant Josephine ($12), is a nod to a restaurant that once did business in Biloxi, Miss., called the White Pillars. Chef Sean Fletcher has borrowed the name and reinterpreted the recipe with a spicier kick. “He’s the backbone and true reason for our success, there’s no doubt,” owner David Snyder said of the inventive chef. The dish is two slices of peeled, dried eggplant dipped in buttermilk, breaded and fried, then stacked with two layers of sautéed Texas Gulf shrimp, mozzarella and sauce diablo and topped with house made hollandaise sauce and chives. A Texas bistro serving steaks and seafood with southwest flavors, Boudro’s has been a mainstay for 27 years. The Guacamole For Two ($9) is freshly prepared tableside — combining
avocado with fresh squeezes of orange and lime juices, Bermuda red onions and cilantro, plus Roma tomatoes and serranos that have been smoked over pecan and mesquite wood. It’s served with fresh homemade tortilla chips and makes a fine companion to a Prickly Pear Margarita ($8), concocted entirely in-house. It’s made by marinating the juice of the prickly pear cactus with fresh tequila overnight and swirling the lot into a frozen margarita. Avocados aren’t just for guacamole at Iron Cactus, which serves a thinkingoutside-the-molcajete Avocado Margarita ($10.75). Lime juice, agave nectar and an avocado puree give a bit of creaminess and a sweet and sour punch to 100 percent organic, Austin-made Dulce Vita tequila. Seafood spot Landry’s is keeping things fresh with a newly updated appetizer: Crab and Crawfish Boulettes ($5). Formerly counting shrimp, onion and celery as the main ingredients, the fried snack now has good-sized bites of jumbo lump crab, claw meat, crawfish tails and sautéed bell pepper, all seasoned with white pepper, black pepper and cayenne and breaded with panko. Dip them in Tabasco mash remoulade for the perfect amount of spice. Landry’s boulettes pair well with just about any drink, so you can pick your favorite type of red or white wine to go with this happy-hour-only menu item.
Aaron Bouroughs describes as “not your parents’ piano bar.” It’s known for its 86-ounce buckets of booze meant for sharing between four or more people, but its most popular cocktail, is the X-Boyfriend ($9.25), made with X-Rated Fusion Liqueur. Its French vodka, Provence blood orange, mango, and passion fruit flavors are matched with orange, cranberry and pineapple juices and Smirnoff vanilla vodka. Burroughs says the cocktail is so popular that it’s lasted through at least five reworkings of the menu, so request this drink to sip while you request your favorite song for the performers’ live jukebox. With handmade cocktails and a menu in the style of Mexican street food, Barriba Cantina is a great River Walk choice. Its most popular dish by far is Perla’s Pescado Salad ($8.99), named for the kitchen manager who created it. Presented in a tortilla bowl, the salad of lettuce, diced tomato, mango salsa and grilled tilapia is topped with salty cotija cheese and, unforgettably, a Mexican deviled egg, which is spiced with cayenne and cumin and finished with crisp jalapeño bacon. The best part about this salad? “It’s awesome when you’re drinking beer on the River Walk,” said Barriba’s marketing director Scott Ziskovsky.

Embassy Suites San Antonio Riverwalk- Downtown By. M. Nicole Set on the banks of the San Antonio River Walk, the Embassy Suites hotel is located in the burgeoning Houston Street district, near the Historic Majestic Theater. “We are the newest and only all-suites, full service, upscale hotel on the river walk,” boasts Penny L. Smith, Director of Sales and Marketing at Embassy Suites. Encompassing an entire city block along the River, between Houston and Travis Streets, this majestic hotel features a 17 foot cascading waterfall that travels from the inside, three-story atrium lobby down to the River Walk below. On river level, built into the side of the hotel, is a beautiful grotto accessible through arched entrances cut from the ‘’Hugman wall,’’ designed by river walk architect Robert H. H. Hugman. The small stone paved plaza offers the cooling mists of the falls and views of large boulders and tropical landscaping, a perfect retreat during hot San Antonio summers. The multi-story lobby inside offers a myriad of comfortable lobby seating, perfect for lounging before a show at the Majestic, or as a meeting place for friends and family before a night out on the river walk. Be sure to step out onto the outdoor patio for a spectacular panoramic view of the River Walk and downtown. “Our Embassy Suites is the only one in the hotel family to be furnished and designed in this way,” explains Smith.
While registered guests enjoy a daily, full, complimentary breakfast and evening reception, visitors to the hotel are welcome to dine at the hotel’s partner restaurant Luke. A Chef John Besh Restaurant, Luke’s menu features a variety of authentic Old World cuisine, combining classic German and French cooking techniques with a New Orleans touch. Be sure to visit during Happy Hour from 3pm-6pm daily to enjoy half off of beer and wine by the glass, markdowns on certain specialty cocktails and small plates, and .50 cent oysters on the half shell. Visit on Tuesday’s, when happy hour is extended to 8 p.m. as part of the City of San Antonio’s “Downtown Tuesday” initiative. In addition to enticing restaurant offers, Downtown Tuesday participants enjoy free parking at city-operated lots and garages, after 5pm. The Embassy Suites San Antonio Riverwalk was a winner of the 2012 & 2013 “Best in Customer Service Award” from TripAdvisor, Expedia and Travelocity. Spring Break and summer will be here before you know it. Be sure to book the hotel’s Park, Play and Stay package and receive complimentary valet parking and complimentary Internet in the guest suites. Centro San Antonio Amigos–
At Your Service. Whether you’re driving, walking or biking around downtown San Antonio, it’s rare to turn a corner and not see at least one of the Centro San Antonio Amigos. Dressed in bright yellow shirts, dark blue jackets, khaki pants and khaki hats, the Amigos are a constant presence in the center city. For the past 14 years, the Public Improvement District (PID), managed by Centro San Antonio, has provided unique supplemental services and improvements in addition to those provided by the City of San Antonio. Property owners within the District voted to pay an assessment to fund the program which includes streetscaping, maintenance and ambassador services. The District employs 52 full-time Amigos, including 18 ambassadors, who work 363 days a year, spending Thanksgiving and Christmas Day at home with their families. While all of the Amigos are at your service, it’s the Ambassador Amigos, who wear straw hats instead of khaki caps, who have the primary role of assisting downtown conventioneers, visitors, workers and residents. Equipped with two-way radios and a complete knowledge of downtown, these uniformed Ambassadors are strategically situated throughout the District and in high-pedestrian traffic areas at key times of the day. Whether you’re looking for recommendations on the best restaurants in downtown, advice on the best sites to see, or just basic directions, an Amigo is there to help. They are in-the-know with regard to
what’s going on around downtown and can give directions to promotional events and downtown attractions.
The River Walk and La Villita. Tours start daily at 10:00am in front of The Alamo. No RSVPs necessary and the tour is free.
In 2013, the Amigos assisted over 1 million downtown guests, office workers and residents with directions and service needs. Along with our Amigos strolling the sidewalks, you can also find them at the Mobile Information Kiosk is out daily from 9:30am8:30pm at following locations:
In addition, the Amigos have a great partnership with local law enforcement, serving as an extra set of eyes and ears to ensure the safety of all downtown visitors, workers and residents. Our Ambassador Amigos are also available to serve as safety escorts and they assist stranded motorists and pedestrians.

Anytime you find yourself in downtown San Antonio and need some extra assistance, ask an Amigo! We are here to serve you! For more information, please visit www. downtownsa.org or call the Centro Operations Center at 210-224-7747.
The Mobile Information Kiosk provides support for the City of San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau as a temporary location where guests can receive important information about local attractions and activities. The Kiosk is also a Wi-fi hotpot, as well as mobile charging station for almost all mobile devices. If you’re looking for quick tour of downtown, join our Amigos on a 1-hour walking tour of downtown. Our Amigos, in addition to being Certified Tourism Ambassadors, are wonderful storytellers, so you are guaranteed to hear the most accurate history on some of the best spots in our center city, including The Alamo,
