Getting More Clients Lash Business Success
Client Growth...and Getting More Clients...It’s a question I get asked the most...How Do I Grow My Business...How Do I Consistently Get New Clients? And rightly so because think about it...the best Lash Artist or Brow Boss in the world is nothing...if no one knows they exist. Or worse only a handful.
The Lash & Brow business is Booming! There are new stylists being trained every day...and more and more are being thrown into the business of well...Business. Without sufficient training on growing their business because they’re training only included a ‘Marketing’ blurb or two about having a Facebook page and handing out flyers! Listen! If you’re learning a new skill it’s not enough to simply learn, because skill without business fundamentals is one that will fall flat and be the vein of frustration. Unless of course you’re working in a booming salon or spa...in that case. You’re probably already ready to rock it! But what if you don’t...or even better...what if you don’t want to fuel the dreams of someone else, and you’d rather fuel your own? Well my beautiful friend there IS a way and while it won’t happen overnight, You Can grow your business and have clients actually seeking You
less than $20 a year), you can use Wordpress. com or Blogger. Blogging gives the search engines another nugget of information to find you and push you higher up in search listings.
out...instead of you hunting new clients down. Now I’m not saying sharing what you do with your community is off limits...far from it. You should absolutely be pounding the pavement and telling anyone willing to hear that you offer the best in Lash &/Or Brow services... and they should come check you out! Wear your Authentic Lash Life apparel, and hit the streets! Stop in banks, dentists offices, salons and bear gifts of sweets if you have to, and introduce yourself! Go Get Out There! Getting new beauty clients is a ‘get the ball rolling’ kind of deal. There are several platforms that can work in your favor if you nurture them as needed to grow!
to post to your Google + profile and start showing up better in Google searches. Google loves to show it’s own products...Use That! ** The key here is this: Set that email up with your Business name in the profile. **Update all your business information correctly and completely ** Upload pictures of your eyelash extension work **Download the Google+ app on to your phone, for easy daily posting and updating **Aim for posting something to your profile at least once a day
3. Website. If you’ve read anything I’ve posted about being found on Google, you know that above anything else you NEED a website...and not just any website. But one that actually works for you while you serve clients. Your website should have SEO(Search Engine Optimization) built into it, and should make it very easy to update on the fly. Even if you take small steps to accomplish these 3 tasks, if you have to choose one to start...THIS IS IT! Your website is what many potential eyelash extension clients will see first as the representation of you and your business. Make it a Fabulous one! Those are my 3 Top favorite tools to gain new clients for my eyelash and eyebrow business. They’ve become my machine that cranks in new clients week after week. I don’t need to post “Appointments Available” or “Why
But let’s be clear! What I’m talking about isn’t paying for a super expensive SEO company to do it for you...If you have $400+ a month to dedicate to that I can surely recommend a great company. But I’m guessing you don’t have $400+ a month to spend. I know I didn’t when I started out...I barely had enough money to purchase supplies, so I sure as heck couldn’t afford a reoccurring expense from the beginning, just the thought of that was terrifying! Nope, what I’m talking about is using the free technology available to you right now to start bringing clients to you! Getting this technology to do the client seeking for you, and having clients calling You and requesting appointments. So you can focus on serving your clients and grow your business. The goal being to stop begging for appointments on Social Media and start enjoying clients reaching out to You! If this sounds like You and you want to have clients seeking you out, let’s look at my 3 Favorite Client Attracting Online Platforms! 1. Google+, If you have a gmail account you’re already one step closer to using it 8
2. Blogging. If you do not have a blog yet, getting one is super easy. And if you have one and simply don’t utilize it, adding a post to it every couple of weeks will help increase your lash extension search rankings. I use Wordpress.org because I have my own domain name(example: www.lashbusinesssuccess.com) and I’ve purchased domain hosting. Basically hosting is where all of my blog, website, files and images ‘live’ on the web. If you’re not ready to step into domain hosting(it’s very cheap at

Winner Ágnes Máté
About me: I have owned my own eyelash extension salon in Budapest, Hungary for 3 years. I continuously train myself and also keep training other colleagues on eyelash and eyebrow extensions in order to keep up with the current trends. Hungarian women are especially exacting in this field - and as I am a perfectionist I want to give them the best. Lash extensions for me were love at first sight, I adore every moment of it, so it is rather like I was living for my hobby, not a job. It means giving so much self-confidence and joy to my clients. I see on their faces when they look in the mirror that they see themselves as beautiful! We can make such a big change with lash extension by emphasizing the clients’ eyes... And it is great to know that I make women feel good with their new lashes - everyday.

Winner Anna Gobey My name is Anna. It is said that following your hearts desire and being paid for doing what you love beats working for a living, fortunately for myself I can assure all of you that it’s more than just a saying. I feel truly blessed to have found myself working in the Lash Industry, it’s most rewarding. I have always been a creative and artistic person. Applying the perfect set of lashes fills me with satisfaction, the type of satisfaction I aim to provide all my dear clients who have supported me from day one. Thank you each and every one of you. A few years ago I embarked on this new venture, I gave up the comfort and security of my mundane, boring, dull and not fulfilling career, took a chance and followed my heart. Studying nails and beauty seemed to be the right choice for me as it would allow me to be creative, artistic and also be appreciated by many. My qualification led me to the career I have chosen to follow. The Lash Industry had openings for Lash Professionals who were prepared to apply themselves fully, get professionally trained and work hard at perfecting what is a much needed and in demand skill. I started out with the basic
stuff as we all do until I discovered the volume look, I was now hooked. Soon after Lash legend Olga Volkova announced her training workshop in the UK I was booked in, it was more than difficult to learn her new technique but her level of training and my hard work have been rewarding. I have never looked back, the results have been amazing and have brought nothing but satisfaction to my many clients as well as myself. I feel truly blessed in what I am doing. Working at making people feel happy and feeling good about the way they look has got to be the greatest type of job satisfaction there is and cannot be substituted. Many of my industry colleagues inspires me to perform at my best, comparing my work to their inspirational work drives me to better myself and work harder at perfecting my skills. To be judged by industry professionals and to have reached the final is a feeling beyond description, I feel a winner already and feel that all my efforts and the support of my trainers and colleagues is now paying off, I could not be happier. Winner Lesley Ann Altree A brief history of a long journey that started back in 2005 when extensions were brand new in the USA and unheard of back home. I had just sold my hairdressing salon when I came across lash extensions and I decided there and then that this was what every girl would want so I embarked on a mission to get myself equipped to offer this service to clients here in SA. After spending a lot of energy convincing Cliff that it was a great idea and that the idea was so great that we should enrol in not one, but two courses while in the USA, we left to do training with both Novalash and Sassylash. On my return and after a bit of practice, the feedback from my clients was fantastic. And that is what I love about the extensions, they give instant gratification to the customer and that in turn makes me happy. After lashing away for a few months I was approached by a number of beauty therapists to train them and after putting together a training manual and a kit, Luscious Lashes International was born, and I have not looked back.
We were the first company to provide eyelash extension training in South Africa and we have continued to invest heavily in product research and training to ensure that we are up to speed with the latest techniques and products. 10 Years later and with a huge amount of effort from the team, we now have trainers and outlets throughout South Africa, Seychelles, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and are now expanding into the European market where, through a trade agreement, there is no import duty on the products from South Africa which will result in a saving to the European distributor and consumer. I feel really blessed that my work was considered good enough to feature on the international stage. I have always taken a very low-key approach to marketing my lash extensions and courses and rather relied on my work to do the talking.

WINNER
Inspirational Lash Artists 2015 Frankie Widdows Voted by Lash Inc Group Members / with 196 votes
ABOUT ME It took me 30 years to find what I feel is my sole passion in life – Eyelash Extensions. At the age of 33 I find myself part of an Industry that I adore, and probably have a slightly unhealthy obsession for – so much so that it consumes my life, even when I sleep and dream lashes. But it’s a far cry from where I started off and saw myself ending up. As a child I wanted to be a vet, a graphic designer, a sports coach and then a Police officer - absolutely nothing to do with beauty, but I had always been creative. At the age of 20 I joined the Police Force, serving for 10 years (4 years as response officer and 6 years as a dog handler). Then in 2012 I made a very tough decision to leave the force, sell my house, my car, take a huge pay cut and follow my creativity by starting a career in the beauty industry. Looking back now I think I must have been crazy at the time, leaving a well paid job to earn peanuts, starting on a new career path and living back with parents at the age of 30. But it was the best decision I ever made and has got me to where I am now. To start off it was hard, I had no job and no clients and, as such, quickly dwindling savings. It was winter and nobody wanted beauty treatments, and those that did never came back as I was terrible. My poor income was suplimented by 12-14 hour days doing cleaning jobs, sports coaching and house and pet sitting services. My beauty business was failing, I was spending more money than I could earn and my decision to leave a well-paid job was starting to look like a big mistake. I was actively looking for other jobs but nobody wanted a 30-year-old ex-police officer who had no other qualifications. Then one day I had a house sitting assignment for a business man called Simon Coulson, and for 3 days I was to look after his £2,000,000 house and 3 dogs, whilst he was away on business. Being curious I asked him what he did for a living and he explained that he was an Internet Marketing Guru – i.e. he teaches people how to build their business online. He explained how he had become a millionaire in just a few years, and now he teaches people how to grow successful businesses too. Within 30 minutes we had made a deal, and in return for house sitting services I could attend 14
one of his 3-day courses. This course opened up my world to how I too could build a successful beauty business, nowhere near his scale but enough for me to be able to earn as much as I did in the police, and live a comfortable life. After his course I started to implement what I had learnt and I started to see my business grow. The money I earned was reinvested back into more business courses, as well as becoming a platinum member of Simon Coulson’s business group, and having him as my mentor. As the months went on I learnt more and more and was able to reinvest my
earnings back into my business that was continuing to grow. The more clients I had, the better I became at beauty, and finally I was able to specialise solely in lashes. The more knowledge I gained of lashes, the more I started to share with others. Someone had helped me improve my business so why shouldn’t I help others and share my passion with like-minded people. Back then I was very active on a group called Salon Geek and would offer help and advice to the other members. Several years ago Facebook lash forums didn’t really exist, so this was the place to go if you wanted to ‘talk lashes’. Over time I became quite popular on Salon Geek, and people would ask for my advice and I would offer all the help, if I could. This lead onto requests for YouTube tutorials, so with my cheap little camera and lack of technology skills, I started to upload some really poor tutorials. But they proved such a big hit with the other techs, and I also started to get followers from all over the world. People would message me asking for advice or a tutorial idea and I would deliver. It seemed that back then, lash technicians did not want to help others or share their knowledge, so when I offered my advice for free it was very unusual, and I continued to do so. This led me to progress into training, something that was requested by many followers. I also realised that a lot of lash training within the UK was really poor –my initial lash trainer required me to put 6 lashes on a model and I was qualified. I was terrible and, as such, I unknowingly caused damage to so many ladies that never returned. I knew I could provide training to a much higher standard, as well as giving something back to the industry that I love. I now run training courses in Beginners, Skill building, Master Lash Artist and Russian Volume eyelash extensions at my training academy The Institute of Eyelash Excellence, and my courses are booked up months in advance. Last year I set up a very successful online Facebook training group called Lash Tech Tutorials – www.lashtechtutorials.com, where members from all over the world could join and learn. It was an idea
presented to me by one of my followers, she was already a member of a brow group and asked if I would do the same. Over the years I had reinvested all of my earnings into training and business courses and, as a result, I had built a very successful lash business that continued to grow. As such I felt I could share and teach this to others techs and help them too grow successful businesses. I could also save them a lot of money by teaching them not to make the same mistakes that I had made. I could gather everything that I had learnt, use the parts that refer to a building a Lash business and then teach it to people from all over the world. For a small monthly fee, qualified lash techs can be part of an online community where they continue to learn. This group is different from all others - it’s a mentoring group where people join to learn. As such, this group forms an extension of my training academy and is my job. Here I upload 2-3 tutorials a week and teach students a vast variety of techniques from simple to advanced. I teach them how to build a successful lash business, attract clients, use Facebook, market themselves etc. I purchase the latest products and then try and test them and give my reviews, so that my members do not waste their money on products that may not work. All my members have unlimited access to me for any advice needed, as well as a wealth of knowledge from the other members of the group. Each member has their own membership number and becomes a member of WALAD (World Association of Lash Artistry and Development). They are issued with their own certificate and logo, which they can display to others, to show they are serious about remaining up to date with the lash industry. We also run competitions where members can win hundreds of pounds worth of Lash goodies, and so much more. This group is now in its second year and has been such a major success, hence it continues. It’s so rewarding to watch all the members not only improve their lashing skills but build successful businesses. It’s a group 15
that I wish existed when I first started out, instead I struggled alone and made so many mistakes because I had no one to ask when it came to all things lashes. A group like this would have assisted me in becoming a better tech, but instead I wasted so much time and money on getting things wrong and having no one to guide me. My passion is not only lashes, but helping others around me – one of the reasons I joined the Police was because I wanted to help people. I have also always enjoyed teaching, and was a sports coach for many years, teaching both children and adults. To share my lash passion with others and to teach feels so natural to me. I get so much pleasure out of helping others – whether it’s speaking with people I have never met, assisting those on my LTT group, helping others on forums or training students, it’s all so rewarding. I love to watch people grow, to gain confidence and build successful businesses. Far too often I see so many Lash Techs lacking confidence, and I always try my best to get them to see how good they are. Applying lash extensions is not easy and I think we all lose sight of just how good we actually are. I try to get people to see this and feel proud that they continue to learn and push themselves, as it’s easy to lose sight of this - especially when we have a bad day. All of this benefits our industry
by producing excellent lash techs and improving the standard of the industry. I think we all have a responsibility to give something back. My unhealthy obsession with lashes means that I rarely have a day off. I also have a responsibility to all of my WALAD members to be there when they need me: this is what they signed up for and as such this is a full time commitment to them. But I don’t just offer this to my members, but everyone. I get messages from so many people every day and I always make sure that I reply to every person. Most people I have never spoken with or met, but they just are just looking for someone that can help them with a question. As a novice tech I remember how lonely it was when no one wanted to help, and I don’t want anyone to feel like that. As such, I will always help anyone and offer the best advice I can give – why shouldn’t we share what we love?
Here are what some of Frankies voters had to say ... I flew over 1,600 kilometres just to have a one-on-one ‘chat’ with her! That’s how inspiring she is - Martina Kallos “Frankie has a heart of gold and gives her time to help others, unselfishly. It was no question who my vote was for when I saw her name. I am who I am today in this industry because of her! Great people deserves great rewards and Frankie surely deserves this one!!!“ - Martika Cross “I don’t know Frankie personally, having only come to know her through her YouTube videos then finding her website and her FaceBook group. I believe there are a lot of people who are similar to her and have done this industry a lot of good. But I am drawn in further by her maturity, professionalism, her drive and focus, her discipline as well as genuine desire to help people in a pretty competitive field in which ‘sharing’ and ‘free information’ is more often than not, taken advantage of. I am very grateful for Frankie’s effort to share her successful and not so successful endevours, saving me from doing things the hard way as she has done. We all want to be successful and profit from our success when possible, and in my opinion, Frankie has done so and continues to do this with committed, unselfish, focused, professional determination that I find most admirable and inspiring. Thank you for the opportunity to express my gratitude by voting for Frankie in your very professional and credible forum, Louise.”- Arlene Potvin “Frankie cares passionately about this industry, which is infectious. She takes the time to answer all questions. Whether it be on her Lash Tech Tutorial page or private message, you know she will reply in detail, no question is too big or too small. She picks you up when you are down and inspires us all to do better and be the best we can be.” x - Cindy Nicholls “Without Frankie and the Lash Tech Tutorial group I wouldn’t be the lash tech I am today.” - Kylee Peebles

First of all I would like to thank everyone, who voted for Flawless Lashes By Loreta. Although we are not doing this for the awards, it is a great honour to be voted best supplier of the year, especially for a new company like us. I, as director of Flawless lashes feel pleasantly surprised that for a second year we are voted best supplier, last year we were voted Best Supplier EU. This is huge honour for us. I’m not going to lie, but this award brings tears to my eyes, and at the same time it feels good as our 24/7 work is appreciated. The question why we have been voted best supplier is probably better to be answered by our customers. Because they are the ones who made it all possible, who put their trust in us.
We see this as a recognition for the hard work the Flawless team have done over the last two years.

LASH BATTLE London is often regarded as one of the most influential cities in the world. When it comes to fashion and beauty, in particular it is fair to say that London is always on top of, and leading current trends. If you want to hone your chosen craft, be it hair dressing, fashion photography or make up artistry, London will always be the place to come and express and develop your talents alongside industry experts. Large- scale competitions and events such as BeautyCon, IMATS and Pro Hair Live are becoming increasingly popular due to such a surge in the beauty industry in recent years. This is no different when it comes to eyelash extensions. With an ever-growing enthusiasm for the once niche industry; there has never been a better time to bring the most talented lash artists from around the world to London to compete. There have been hugely successful competitions in the US and Europe over the past few years such as Lash Wars, The Open Lash Art Championship and Colibri Fest , which have seen professionals bring so much passion and creativity to the table. It was only a matter of time before London hosted the first event of its kind in the United Kingdom. Lash Battle 2015 was created by London Lash founder Hanna Putjato, who has been a recognized and celebrated figure in the eyelash extension community for many years. She is arguably known best for her love of the Russian Volume eyelash extension technique, which she trains globally. Hanna has also been chosen to judge at competitions around the world, so she was able to bring her knowledge and experience to her own event. The competition took place at Ladbrooke Hall in North Kensington, with its grand features and beautiful interior mirroring the tone of the competition itself. Judges from around the world flew into the highly anticipated event as professionals in their field, looking to find the most talented lash artists. As the competition was open internationally it did
not matter whether they hailed from the UK or internationally- all that mattered were the lashes! Each round of the competition was split into three categories; Beginner, Master and Expert. Due to travel restrictions and so many lash artists wanting to be a part of the event, there was an online photo competition, where lash artists could submit their best work in hopes of impressing the esteemed judging panel.
Lash Battle was spread over two days and lash rivals battled it out against the clock to create the most technically perfect eyelash extensions. With the competition split into three competing categories of Beginner, Master and Expert, and into three rounds; “Classic Look”- single eyelash extensions, “Double Volume” 2D eyelash extensions and “Dramatic Volume” 3-6 D eyelash extensions. After each round was completed, the judges got to work and scrupulously checked each set of eyelashes thoroughly, looking out for coverage of lashes, accuracy of application and creativity within the set criteria. As with any competition, not everyone could win an award, however what everyone gained was generous prizes from sponsors, boosting their kits and gained valuable contacts and experience within what may have been one of the most competitive battles that eyelash extensions has ever seen. With many vowing to attend next year, there is no doubt that London will be hosting this event for many years to come.
Hanna Putjato, LONDON LASH - Founder and director of LONDON LASH, one of the biggest eyelash extensions suppliers in UK - judge of international eyelash extensions competitions - Owner of LADY LASH eyelash studios in London and Manchester - Accredited international eyelash extensions trainer, - Organiser of the first eyelash extensions competition in Britain - LASH BATTLE

Hot Lashes Introducing a new adhesive on the market that is a superior product with years of science based background! In 2013, Jamie Hardy B.Kin/B.Ed master eyelash tech was inspired by two Canadian based companies in her province that excelled in creating top of the line adhesives. Jamie quickly discovered that her interest in this ‘perfect recipe’ along with the encouragement of her partner who is a chemical engineer, was what she wanted to put her motivation and drive into. She soon began researching, testing, retesting, and producing ‘the best’ adhesive for eyelash technicians. After a year and a half Jamie finally found the perfect adhesive to brand and market. Hotlashes Ultra Adhesive is tried and tested and ranked in the top 5 best adhesives out there today. Hotlashes Ultra Adhesive has a 1-2 second dry time with medium to low fumes. Hotlashes Ultra has up to 8 week retention with proper care, and works best in humidity 35%-55%. With Hotlashes Ultra thin consistency, this adhesive is great for classic or volume lashing.

NEW AND IMPROVED
UNDER EYE TREATMENT PADS EXCLUSIVELY FROM NOUVEAU LASHES With more than 10 years’ experience in the eyelash industry and winners of The Guild ‘Best Lash Supplier’ 2014 & 2015, the new and improved UNDER EYE TREATMENT PADS, exclusively from Nouveau Lashes, is a must try product for all eyelash technicians. Designed specifically for eyelash treatments including LVL Enhance to help secure and protect lower lashes during treatments, the new hypoallergenic, gel free formulation is kinder to the skin (non-irritant), and the smaller ergonomic shape makes the pads easier to apply and eradicates slipping. Bridgette Softley, Co-Director of Nouveau Lashes, said: “With over 10 years’ eyelash experience, Nouveau Lashes understand the importance of developing products that fit the needs of the technician and improve the customer experience. Under eye treatment pads are a staple item for both the technician and customer and yet the products available were falling short of the mark”. After a lengthy focus group involving eyelash educators, trained eyelash technicians and eyelash customers, the product development team at Nouveau Lashes, listened to what each key stakeholder liked and disliked about existing eye treatment pads and it did not take them long to identify what was needed to improve this essential treatment item. The resulting new UNDER EYE TREATMENT PADS exclusively from Nouveau Lashes are specially shaped, offering enhanced comfort for the customer, and offer more convenience for the technician. As well as the ergonomic shape making the pads easier to fit and suitable for all eye shapes, the non gel formulation means the pads are less likely to slip and the medical grade adhesive means the technician no longer needs to use micropore tape over the top to secure the pads. Furthermore the microfoam material allows the technician to mark or draw on the
pad so they know where to put the different length of lashes during an Extend or Express treatment. Louise Prunty, Lash Inc Editor said: “I sampled the new under eye patches from Nouveau at their PR event at Nouveau HQ. They are perfect for technicians who have struggled with under eye patches fitting properly, slipping or the gel irritating certain clients. We are excited to have samples of these new patches in Issue 8 of Lash Inc and in our Lash Box – samples boxes in November”. Look out for the new Nouveau under eye pads in the UK Lash Inc & Lash Box. Career Profle
Inese Stepanova from I.NOVA I would like to introduce myself to you as a very passionate eyelash artist.
My name is Inese Stepanova. I am originally from Latvia. I am 28 years old. I have been brought up in a very hard working family. Since I was 4 I was attending art school after the pre-school times. When I was 8 years old I went to a Gymnastic school and become very strong in music. So when I was 9 I went two schools. Gymnastic and music college. I have graduated as an opera singer with a grade two, played violin for 12 years taking part in a lot of competitions . And piano was always there for my heart too. I moved to Devon UK in April 2008 after I invited to be a waitress in the pub in a local village. I worked there for over a year and moved into a town Exmouth to gain my language experience. I wasn’t great at English :) I worked as a carer at a nursing home and 30
then residential homes, always singing along bonding with elderly who loved hearing me sing. Then I went to study Literacy and Numeracy and got Level 1 and 2. That helped me to get into different kind of jobs to meet new people and learn more English. I have always liked Beauty. Had my nails done since I was 19 and lashes too. Now 11 years later :) I was intregued myself, so in 2010 I searched for training courses, but simply living in a studio flat and working I could not afford it back then unfortunately, It was always in back of my mind though.
So I’ve decided to get a new job in a cafe and a second job as a bar attendant. And worked hard to manage to save. In 2012 I went to London to Margarita Belska’s School and started an NVQ 2 in nails. I enjoyed it but met Kintija and saw her training ladies in lashes. And I just fell in love all over in lashes and beauty. I’ve booked a course and graduated in December 2012
when I was 9 months pregnant. Back then I was sharing my living accommodation down here in Devon so travelled a lot there and back on the train by myself and my baby bump to achieve my dreams. I knew I loved lashes.
in Beauty too. So us both decided to open a beauty shop together doing nails and lashes. We found a small premises in town and Daria (my friend) knew I didn’t have much money helped me with rest costs monthly. I was ever so lucky to have such a supportive best friend. 2013 5th July we had a grand opening of the Boutique. We were building up our clientele, and wow, we got so busy some weeks. I was happy charging £30 for full sets. And £12-15 for infills. I was a very happy mummy because I’ve became self employed and entitled to Working Tax credits and housing benefit. So from my savings I’ve managed to find a 2 bed house for us and Aiyana started nursery when she was 5 months old. In November 2013 I learned Volume technique and gained my Masters degree. Volume technique - lashes applied one by one to build a fan with 0.07 lashes. Took ages, But the effect was beautiful. So I quickly looked for models at work to get practicing. So left the nails and decided to train hard at home. I used to do lashes from home - my lounge - for £10 to my friends. And maybe do 3 people a week. However with a baby bump growing I felt like it was enough. Till I had more and more enquiries coming in as the word of mouth spread. I WAS SO HAPPY :) I started to do mobile beauty going to my clients houses. I made a Facebook page and start posting up my pictures and advertising in local Exmouth Facebook group however I put my price up to £25 for full sets of classic lashes. I was doing around 6-8 ladies a week till I had my contractions on my lashes stool doing a full set of classics. So the next day January 24th 2013 I gave birth to my daughter Aiyana. She was such a strong baby and I had strong views on how I would like to bring up my child. Sadly when I returned home with the new born my landlord asked me to leave so I’ve become homeless single parent sofa sleeping at my friends house without any government support because I was from Latvia and rules back then were changing so till I start to work I would get no support. So day 15 I was back on my stool doing my ladies infills with my baby in the same room, breastfeeding in between when Aiyana woke up. I had a very close friend who had been doing my nails for many years. She had a clothes shop however always been
I worked with x-crossed tweezers. And this way I found my own way how to pick up 2 lashes at the time and start doing more research. I got in touch with my school in London and asked them what do I have to do to become an instructor. I followed all instructors training courses and become an instructor of eyelash extensions. My dreams were coming true and bring up such a happy independent child gave me more and more passion for what I was specialising in - eyelashes. Tired but happy I didn’t stop dreaming further. So I knew I wanted to open a salon that we didn’t have anywhere around DEVON but I’ve seen some in London. An eyelash bar. I had people contacting me for help as they saw my work on line and realised their lashes were damaged, so there was a need for very high standards in lash artistry. I read books attended extra trainings, went to beauty shows twice a year. In October 2014 I took a business loan, invited my parents for the first time to stay with me in UK to help me re-decorate these new premises and spend time with my daughter. I got my friends together and we re-furbished the premises in 8 days. Grand Opening of I.NOVA STUDIO was on 15th November 2014. Where I started off working at these beautiful premises that I’ve put my heart
and sole in to painting and decorating till 4am and working from 9am at home. All day with clients and evenings at the premises. Mad!!! I LOVED every minute of it :) My dreams were growing bigger so I wanted to grow my team with passionate people like me. Leigh- Anne completed a course with Sleek Lashes and start working with me in December CHRISTMAS time. We have grown in techniques learning together, in communication skills as a team and genuinely become great friends and eyelash specialists. I try my best to be active on social media and talk to many other lash artists, follow their work and always try to do new things at work. Design lashes, work my imagination and out it into my skills. I signed up for LashInc as soon as it came out. What a fantastic idea. We have mags about beauty, nails, hair etc. And lashes have been left behind however what a difference it makes to woman’s lives in becoming more confident and happy. Also their partners / husbands love their lashes too. In May 2015 I was an awards winner or NEW BUSINESS OF THE YEAR and YOUNG ENTERPRENUER OF THE YEAR. After having my new I.NOVA STUDIO it is fantastic to be recognised and taken seriously by many to award me with 2 awards in one night. That was a first in Exmouth Chamber history. OMG what an adrenaline rush I went through and my happiness reached Gods ‘UP THERE’ :) I knew I am doing right thing for a community of ladies helping them understand and educate them what great healthy lashes are and how pleasant it is to wear them!! I support local charities and help raise money, giving gift vouchers for raffles. Just to be a helpful and a kind business owner. :) I met you in person at the first UK Eyelash Convention on 12th July 2015 and I would love to have a chance to be in this amazing magazine to show my passion for lashes. And help me to get closer to one of my dreams :) To be published along side other great lash artists. Thank You for your time and I hope You will find this inspirational and it helps other woman. No matter what life brings Everyone should follow the dreams, make them big and work towards them hard with passion. Please let me know if you would be interested to publish any of my work and maybe a short story of fast achievements in life and dreams :) Kind regards Inese xxx 31

When is it ok to fire a client? As a lash artist we have all experienced a client that is a royal pain in the…..toe. I recently had a client that continually showed up late for every appointment with oh, ya know, 3-day old gel liner caked on and only very few lashes left on from {her words} having too much fun, talked the entire appointment about how the lashes weren’t as full as she wanted them but was only willing to book a partial fill, and showed up once with a partial payment! I will admit, I let that crap continue way too long, I kept telling myself she was a loyal client, she was young, or on the occasion that she had cleaned her lashes and had taken care of them and was actually a peach to work with, I would literally hear myself say “she is learning and is getting so much better” then BAM right back to wanting to stab her…er um, my eyes out. So when is it appropriate to fire a client? Let me be the first to tell you it is one of the most uncomfortable things we in the beauty industry have to do. This particular client of mine behaved erratically because I allowed her to. Yes, I gave her very clear instructions on how to care for the lashes, my late policy, my fee etc. etc. she made the choice to disregard my instructions, and in the end I was the one accepting the appointment and allowing the behaviour. Here is a good way to gage when it’s time to cut those lashes loose. Ask yourself if you are getting frazzled and unable to lash to the best of your ability? Are you finding yourself complaining about the problem child to your co-workers or significant other? Do you feel drained physically and emotionally after they leave? Are the clients’ demands unachievable? Do you feel abused? If you can honestly answer yes to one or more of these questions, then it’s time to let them go. Again, this won’t be easy, the key is keeping it professional and to the point. Personalities clash, if we were all alike what a boring world we would live in. I suggest the email approach, it is diplomatic and you don’t have to do the very awkward face to face breakup. Start you email with something similar to… Dear {clients name}, I (we) have recently reviewed our client satisfaction, and unfortunately we feel we cannot accommodate your requirements at this time. We greatly appreciate your business throughout the {weeks, months, years}. We would be happy to provide a list of quality lash artist in the area who may be a better fit. Again we would like to thank you for your business and support. Sincerely, {company name} While the money is great, our sanity is far more valuable. Treat yourself kindly, so you that you may continue to make others feel beautiful every day.

STEP BY STEP
LOWER LASH
Lower Lash Extensions are becoming incredibly popular thanks to the products that are now available to us. We can create beautiful natural lower lashes to give a soft yet full appearance to compliment the top lashes, by using very fine and lightweight extensions such as 0.10’s and 0.07, with lengths ranging from 0.5mm – 0.8mm.
Lower Lash Application – The safe Closed Eye Technique 1. POSITIONING
Roll up a long Towel or use a neck pillow and place in the nape of the neck so your clients head is tilted back towards you. Positioning your client correctly will allow you to see and apply their lower lashes with ease.
gently lift the tape with the lashes away from the lower lid and tape back. Take the gel pad from the top of the lower lashes and place this under the lower lashes ready for application.
Prepare and prime the lashes as you would for the top. Isolate and apply the lash extension from underneath the lower lashes, this will give a cleaner finish and if client wears top lashes will avoid them catching together.
3. LASH PICK UP
Hold the lash extensions in the opposite direction to that of top lash placement. The curve to face away from you.
5. END RESULT
2. PREPARING THE LASHES
Take a wide micropore tape (2.5cm) or transparent tape and cut to 7cm, cut another piece to 4cm and apply the shorter length directly on top in the centre of the longer length, both sticky sides stuck together in the middle to make a plaster effect . This will ensure that you do not stick the top lashes to the tape. Ask your clients to look back towards you, place a gel pad loosely on top of the lower lashes, to keep them hidden whilst taping up the top lashes. Place your pre made tape, (sticky side facing you) gently resting on the gel pads, ask client to close her eye, you will now have her top lashes resting on your tape,
Remove all tapes and pads gently sit up client, open eyes.
4. APPLICATION
The most common lengths to use for lower lashes are 0.5mm, 0.6mm & 0.7mm. If you want them looking natural use thicknesses of 0.07’s and for a slightly more mascared look use 0.10 thickness. The ideal curve to use is C as this looks most natural, a J curve can also be used.
Miranda’s Tips
Apply the top lashes first before placing Lower. You can also use 2D volume fans on the Lower lashes. If natural lashes are facing in a slanted direction just place the extensions straight on top rather than swipe the natural lash. Accredited Lower Lash Course £129 Info@uklashinstitute.com

UK LASH CONVENTION The first ever UK Lash Convention 2015 proved a huge success. We were very lucky to have some fantastic assistance from businesses and guest speakers, willing to attend and provide essential informative inputs, and with stalls for people to browse and purchase products from, the day was a great event for all to enjoy. The day started off with an input from Louise Prunty, with a detailed insight into how to build you Lash Business, which is a must have for every lash tech. This was followed by Karen Betts from Nouveau beauty group, who gave an excellent speech on trichotillomania and showcased the amazing work her team do with clients that not only suffer from trichotillomania, alopecia and those dealing with, or recovering from, cancer.
inquiring into any interest and was met with an overwhelming response, and I set about looking into the logistical nightmare that came with hosting such an event.
There was then an opportunity for all attendees to purchase Lash products from a number of trade stalls that were in attendance. Gina Mclaren was next up, with another detailed speech on the science behind our products, before we broke for lunch and more shopping.
Over the months I started to look for venues, as well as making contact with potential guest speakers and Lash Suppliers to see if they would be interested in attending. All of those I contacted were interested and we quickly had a fantastic variety of guest speakers and stallholders.
After lunch, Sylvia Liu shared her story of how she entered the Lash Industry, has developed her own brand and Lash shop and juggles it all whilst being a mother. This was followed by myself, with an insight into my own journey within this industry, followed finally with Hanna Putjato and her amazing input discussing Russian Volume lashing.
Myself, my partner Damian, and our good friend Becca worked tirelessly on this, with the logistics of hosting such an event being more complicated and time consuming than we could have ever imagined. There was far more to it than we first appreciated, and while it was a steep learning curve for us, it was immensely satisfying to bring everything together on the day.
The concept of the first ever Lash Convention was first thought of while sitting in my hotel room in Norway, during a training visit in November 2014! It was here that I sat thinking about how far behind we, in UK, seem to be when arranging and hosting such events - compared to some other countries. I was always seeing on Facebook the amazing conventions and competitions held in Europe, and thought how great it would be if the UK had something similar, or even a place for Lash Technicians to convene. So I posted on Facebook
In order to make this convention affordable for everyone, we ran it as a non-profit event. We calculated the cost of the venue, hire of equipment and all the other costs incurred by us, as the initial outlay, and then offered the tickets at a price that covered our costs only. For us, the convention was always about giving the UK what it lacked and, as such, we achieved this with the event being a success.
40
Feedback from the event, to both ourselves and those participating, has been extremely positive - with new contacts made, sales and
networking between businesses. We have also been contacted by several independent businesses that were not involved this time around, expressing interest in future events. We hope that events like this will help put the UK on the map when it comes to hosting eyelash extension conferences and conventions. By Frankie Widdows
After Care for Lashes Once your application procedure is completed it is important to spend a few minutes with your client at the end of their service showing them their lashes and explaining again how to care for them at home. Be sure to explain well or demonstrate how to cleanse lashes at home and encourage clients to cleanse every day. Show them the home care recommended and provide them with a cleansing brush, lash comb and after care card. If during your consultation you determine the client wears more makeup than normal or has selected a set that may be too full or long for their natural lashes, special care instructions may be
After care tips: • No water proof liners, shadows or mascaras. No cream liners. • No oil based makeup remover products or coconut oil moisturizers, oily eye creams • No crimping lash curlers (heated curlers may be used) • Do not pick or pull on lashes. Never attempt to remove lashes at home. • Cleanse lashes directly at the root every day with approved cleanser • Use approved growth serum or lash conditioner on the root only to maintain natural lash health • You may use a blow-dryer on a cool setting to fluff and separate lashes after a shower • Brush lashes daily or when out of place. Brush gently and be easy at the root so as not to lift the bonds. Do not brush volume lashes when wet so as not to close the fans. • If you have a lash out of place you can wet with warm water then brush to try and smooth the kink in the natural hair. • Try not to sleep directly on the lashes, if you are a side or stomach sleeper consider a lash pillow or sleep mask for protection. • Your natural lashes shed daily so do not be alarmed if you notice a single natural lash attached to a fallen extension. • Some clients may need to fill as often as every 2 weeks or as far as five weeks based on their natural cycle or home care regimen.
necessary, as well as growth supplement products for after care. Retail is a great way to boost your bottom line so its advisable to have a selection of after care accessories available for clients as well. This could include sleep masks, special lash pillows, biotin for hair skin & nails, growth serums for lashes, makeup removers, compatible mascaras, sealants, liners, shadows etc. Remember to re-book your client for their next fill in 3-4 weeks.

Japan’s Influence on Eyelash Technology False eyelashes play a very important part in Japanese cosmetics. In fact, false eyelashes have been popular on a mainstream level for over 70 years – ever since renowned make up company KOJI released their tsuke-matsuge in the 1940s. To understand the history one must first understand KOJI’s motivation for creating this pioneering product. KOJI was inspired to develop their extensive range of tsuke-matsuge by the geisha. After climbing into the mainstream, changes were made to ensure each and every new design matched the needs of consumers of that particular market.
1973: The first set of DUO type lashes were released. This was around the same time that the mini skirt was popularised in fashion – a look which helped spike popularity of extensions.
Timeline of the False Eyelash Industry in Japan
1984: Eyelash Minette was launched, introducing Japan and the rest of the world to higher quality products.
1947: Japan’s first ever false eyelashes became available – tsuke-matsuge. Up until this time the geisha women would craft their own false eyelashes by hand by knitting them together, one by one, from hairs plucked from their head. While these false eyelashes were truly beautiful, it was a long and tedious process.
1991: All KOJI packaging was updated on their lashes to create what they are today (2014). 1995: Throughout the following decades very little occurred. Popularity didn’t increase, but didn’t decrease either. In 1995, however, a brand new false eyelash was invented aimed specifically at teenage girls – Matsuge Mate. This “accent” eyelash was used to accentuate the corners of the eyes.
False eyelash brands started to develop, staring with EYELASH – adopted as the brand name for KOJI. The lashes that were released were nicknamed BAKO “red box”.
1955: The revolutionary original design was reinvented with new packaging. This featured a PVC base instead of thin paper. 1965: No. 19 eyelashes also started using brand new coloured fibres rather than just the standard black. 1967: The increasing popularity of false eyelashes throughout the 1960s paved the way for new designs, and in 1967 the first ever mink eyelashes were created. These lashes provided a more realistic look than any other materials of the time, and closely resembled the original hand made geisha creations of the previous decades. 1970: New and more daring designs started to emerge, starting with the No. 22 eyelash, which featured different colours and materials.
42
1975: The first Eyelash Mellow type series was born, introducing the world of synthetic fibres to the beauty industry. This made false eyelashes even stronger than natural lashes. The term “Brilliant Eyelash” was used to emphasize their significance and was party responsible for them being such a big hit in Japan.
1999: Bead eyelashes and other, even more daring designs started to emerge. Many of these more colourful lashes were created specifically for young girls. 2006: During the early 2000s false eyelash popularity in the western world soared; however, for the first time in history Japan was trailing behind. Eventually TAKAKO was released, which were designed specifically for modern women and brought eyelashes back to the height of popularity. 2007: Speedy eyelashes were born – lashes that could be attached without adhesive. These could be applied with just one single step, which was a major innovation in eyelash technology and boosted sales of lashes for the personal user. Japanese eyelash manufacturers created many of the designs that the major brands use today. They were over half a century ahead of the west and continue bring to market new innovative designs.

Tips and Tricks
by Aoife
To find the ideal curled look for each client, I usually ask them when they wear their mascara, what are they trying to achieve with it? Where on the lashline are they trying to make it look longer (middle or outer?) or to make it look thicker (denser = more eyelash extensions are needed in this area) or where are they trying to raise up the lashes using an eyelash-curler? The answer to this will usually give me a good hint/clue for what lengths and curls to use!
NATURAL LASHES WHICH GROW DOWNWARDS To lift the lashes, place curlier extensions on (D curls, L curls) HOWEVER, some clients are used to their lashes drooping downwards and like the look! For these clients, longer B curls or C curls can create a sultry swept out look.
FOR HOODED LIDS ON MORE MATURE CLIENTS The curlier C, D and L curls are great for creating an instant eye lift but use B curls angled outwards on the outer edges to avoid the eye-width looking too narrow on narrow-set eyes.
NATURAL LASHES WHICH GROW UPWARDS Using the curlier extensions on these will make the client have a very surprised look! This is fine if this is what the client likes. In some cases you can try to soften the curl a bit by placing more relaxed curls (Bs) UNDER each curly natural lash.
NATURAL LASHES WHICH GROW STRAIGHT ANY curl looks great on these lashes! Try experimenting and mixing the curls to create the desired look!

NEWS Lash+Doctor turns all eyes to breast cancer awareness At NovaLash, women and their well-being are at the heart and soul of everything we do. The truth is, that 12% of American women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. The good news in the gloom? Early detection and screening as well as increased awareness and ongoing research has caused those numbers to plummet every year! That’s why NovaLash believes in increasing breast cancer awareness among American women and why we are proud to announce our NovaLash “Winks for Pink” Program. Ahead of the much anticipated seventh instalment in the Star Wars franchise in cinemas this Christmas, global beauty brand Max Factor has teamed up with the film to create a limited edition collection. GO GREIGE This autumn, Bobbi Brow Cosmetics introduces the Greige collection - a range of Bobbi’s favourite natural shades. It’s actually inspired by the shade range Bobbi discovered while mixing paint for a home project and it brings together the perfect blend of grey and beige hues. Bobbi says: “I love the colour you can create by mixing grey and beige - it’s the perfect neutral for subtle to statement making looks.” Our favourite product in the collection is the Greige Eye Palette which is simply stunning. It features Bobbi’s favourite grey and beige-toned shadows, along with striking new shades like Greystone and Earth Metal, all in a variety of matte-to-metallic finishes. We particularly love the packaging - a sleek, navy compact which looks very slate like. You can get your hands on the New Greige Collection now, as it launched in September. Be quick, as it’s gorgeous!!! 52

Kelly-Ann Interviews
MAC ARTIST CHER WEBB
She’s one of MAC’s top artists who spends her life travelling the world, painting the faces of the rich and famous at all the red carpet events. Senior Artist for MAC, Cher Webb takes time out to speak to Lash Inc about her love of make-up, life and lashes.
1. What drove you to become a makeup artist? How did you train? “I always loved make-up when growing up. I used to sit and watch my mum and her friends applying their make-up before going out and would be completely fascinated! I trained as a dancer for many years and would play and apply make-up to myself and my dancer friends at competitions which gave me a taste for it at a young age. “I trained at Southampton Technical College for 3 years doing beauty therapy and makeup. I really learned everything when working at MAC and being on counter. Real faces and real people - it’s the best way of learning and gaining confidence.” 2. Describe a typical week in the life of a senior artist for MAC. “Each week is very different from the next which is ideal for me and attracted me to the role initially. I would get itchy feet working the same days/hours each week; the only downside is I have no pets! The toy Poodle will have to wait a few more years. “The Senior Artist role varies day to day, I could be at London Fashion Week or one of 54
the other major cities, presenting master classes, writing press quotes, working behind the scenes at BAFTA or other award ceremonies. We were recently at Port Eliot festival which I loved! The following day after this, I was working at the a Fringe Festival in Edinburgh.” 3. What is your career highlight? “During my 11 years at MAC I have experienced many memorable highlights, I never take for granted some of the opportunities I am presented with. Doing make-up for people I am a huge fan of and admire for example, being in their home or world for that moment is priceless.
“I worked with Grace Jones in New York last year and blew our MAC Pro Red Glitter all over her body which glistened and reflected like a disco ball as she performed with her giant hula hoop!”
4. Tell us about something which you know now, which you wish you’d known about when you first started out as a make-up artist.
curled, thickened with mascara or false - they are a beautiful element of the face. Being a mascara junkie, I wouldn’t be leaving the house any time soon without it!
only downside is you can’t apply your mascara over them so when applying eye shadows you have to be extra careful not to leave a roof of glimmer on top of the lashes.”
“You have to be a mind reader! Some clients prefer to sit in silence and relax while having their make-up applied - they could be thinking of a million things like their speech or character role for example. The main thing is that you bring with you a calming presence and the skill of picking up speed as you work if necessary. Quick make-up is often needed: be confident and bang it out! Also know your kit inside out and have your staple products to hand.”
“I recommend always curling your lashes and taking time to preen each lash, even the tiny inside and outside corners which don’t always get a look in. I’m a huge fan of individual lashes, just a few feathery ones on the outer corners will lift the eye shape in a natural and effortless looking way. MAC #34 individuals come in 3 different lengths, I always use these for celebrities and red carpet events rather than strip lashes.”
7. What’s your favourite eye make-up look?
5. False eyelashes and, increasingly, eyelash extensions are used a lot now... how important are lashes to the final overall look when it comes to beautiful eye make-up? “Groomed eyelashes, whether they are tinted,
6. Have you ever tried eyelash extensions?
“My favourite eye make-up look tends to have a worn in rock n roll 70s edge to it. MAC Paintpot in Quite Natural is a gorgeous chocolate brown cream-matte eye base. Layer this with creamy pencils all over the eye in black and bronze hues for a sexy eye. Curl lashes and apply lashings, of your favourite mascara, try MAC In Extreme Dimension for an amazing false lash look.”
“I personally haven’t tried permanent eyelash extensions as I tint, curl and layer mascara onto mine for a similar effect. I think they look great for holidays and weddings when they are done well. Less is sometimes more! The

LASH LAUNCHES MASCARA
From long, mascara-coated eyelashes to full-on Russian Volume extensions, our obsession with luscious lashes is clearly here to stay. Kelly-Ann Woodland casts an eye over all the latest big brand mascaras which have landed on beauty counters this year. As any lash technician will tell you, it’s all about the eyes .... and how you frame them. No makeup look would be complete without beautiful lashes, so it’s little wonder we’re a bit obsessed with extensions and mascaras. Consider this for a mind-blowing statistic: according to figures from the NPD Group, quirky make-up brand Benefit Cosmetics sell a tube of their famous “They’re Real!” mascara every 15 seconds. We literally can’t get enough of the stuff ... and the beauty industry knows it. 2015 has definitely been THE year of big mascara launches. From mascaras enriched with lash primers to brushes with mini hooks, we have the rundown on the mascaras which really pack a punch ..... Estee Lauder enlisted the help of model-ofthe-moment Kendall Jenner early in 2015 to front it’s campaign for “Little Black Primer” which aims to be the mascara version of your favourite LBD (Little Black Dress); a fail-safe outfit which looks great all of the time. The real selling point of this big launch was the fact it had a multiple uses as a mascara: it tints, amplifies and sets. What sets this mascara apart from others though is its priming properties. Unlike other lash primers which are white, this one is black. It really coats the lashes well and helps give “ooomph”. Alternatively, if you don’t want full-on mascara, you can use the “Little Black Primer” as a tint, so it’s perfect for weekends for minimum fuss and effort. Last, but by no means least, it’s excellent as a waterproof top coat. My mum suffers from watery eyes and has been hunting for a trustworthy mascara for years which doesn’t leave her with panda eyes .... and now she’s found it. Around the same time of Estee’s campaign with Kendall, the beauty world was also buzzing about Benefit Cosmetics big mascara launch; “Roller Lash”. Yes, we’re talking here about the brand which already had a best-selling mascara in “They’re Real!” and here they were, once again, trying to get another slice of the pie. “Roller Lash” is basically designed for those who have straighter lashes. The brush has tiny little hooks within it which “grab” the lashes, so more are coated and as the actual formula dries,
56
it pulls up the lashes and holds them in place. Voila ... curly lashes! Kiss goodbye to those lash curlers. In addition to “Roller Lash”, during the summer, Benefit released two new coloured mascaras (blue and brown) which form part of the famous “They’re Real!” line-up. They know how to capitalise on our love of lashes! Clinique’s famous Chubby Sticks have been a huge hit, so it was hardly surprising when the brand decided to extend the Chubby family by creating the “Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara”. Cue a big, fat brush and, along with the obligatory black, four delicious colours (limited edition), guaranteed to make your eyes pop. Along with Jumbo Jet, you have Bodacious Black Honey, Portly Plum, Two Ton Teal and Massive Midnight. For long and defined lashes which look pretty and not over-the-top, try Lancome’s newest mascara, Hypnose Volume-a-Porter, which launched in August. Its formula is 20% latex, so it leaves your lashes nice and soft. Surely I’m not the only one who feels some mascara leaves lashes crispy?! It also uses rose cells for better resistance, so a great mascara to try if your lashes are a little weak. Finally, we have to mention something about the clumpy, “messy mascara” trend as exemplified perfectly by Maybelline’s “ Colossal Chaotic Mascara” which launched in the US this summer and hit UK stores in September. Many a beauty editor did a double take (indeed so did the Lash Inc editor!) when campaign pictures of this particular mascara were released. Clumped together, messy eye lashes may not be your idea of lovely lashes, but this particular mascara boasted a specially designed brush, apparently designed to tease lashes into a mess. The wonderful world of beauty, huh? However, in a similar vein, the smudged, messy look did appear on the Fall 2015 runways, so who are we to criticise?! For this particular look, make-up artists purposefully made eyes look messy by letting excess mascara smudge onto the eyelids and touch the skin whilst coating the bottom lashes. Whatever floats your boat ....!!
BEAUTY EDIT by Melanie Doyle On my continued search for more natural products you will find some detailed reviews on products that are natural and not tested on animals with some unique selling points. I have been working on many projects and photo-shoots but one that I truly loved working on was a body art shoot inspired by an image myself and the team seen and used as inspiration for our dark beauty look that we wanted to do using Kryolan Eye Blood, which is a fake blood that goes into the eye and looks quite gruesome but awesome at the same time, it is a very striking image that has recieved lots of attention especially the eye blood!
Photography: Ian McManus www.ianmcmanus.com Model: Emma Ward www.emmaward.co.uk Barbara Carranza – Pro Designer Tweezers - £18 plus P & P they come in black, grey or white and soon you will be able to buy a pink pair from her new collection. How to use these remarkable shaped tweezers to pluck the eyebrows: Step by Step 1: Place the tweezers aligned to the top of the eyebrow. Start plucking from the arch to the start point of the brow. Because of its alignment it will be easier to follow the natural line of the actual brow shape. Its position will allow you to give definition to the eyebrow. 2: Equally, align the tweezers to the bottom line of the eyebrow, this way it is easier to follow its natural shape. Its precision will allow you to take from one hair to a few. The tweezers shape will allow visibility of the exact hair you want to pluck. 3: When shaping the opposite eyebrow, start under the brow and position the tweezers with the point facing inwards towards the nose. This technique and the unique shape of the tweezers allows the visibility to be precise.
The tweezers have various benefits including the length and the angled grip of the tweezers which makes plucking the hair much easier than with traditional tweezers. The tweezers align to the brow making it much easier to tweeze out the hairs and to follow the natural line of the brow shape. Also due to the very fine point you can even tweeze out very fine hairs quite easily without nicking the skin which I am sure most of us have done at one time or another. 57
I also found that these tweezers are a dream for applying individual flare lashes and strip lashes which is an added bonus! I used them with one of my students who was really struggling when learning flare individual lashes and yet with these she found it so much easier and was applying them in no time at all with the Barbara Carranza tweezers!
Back to nature... A brand that you will just fall in love with www.purityherbs.co.uk Purity Herbs is a product blended with Icelandic herbs that have been used for centuries for healing purposes. Every herb has its own specific quality or strength to heal, cure and improve the condition of the skin. The special blend of many different and unlike herbs in every Purity Herbs product makes them all unique. The herbs are searched and harvested by hand on the exact point of their growth and in the right condition, far away from pollution and built up areas to get the most power out of the herbs. Only the parts of the herbal plants which are going to be used for production purposes are cut off and the rest of the herbal plants get the opportunity to continue to grow in peace which I totally love as it is a product that is also looking after nature too!. After the extract has been used, the refuse is returned to nature too! I used a few of the products and there was not one product that I didn’t like at all, but my favourites were the cleansing milk and the eye cream. My son also used the Viking Balm which managed to clear up his eczema and dry skin that he suffers with at the top of his alms and since he has stopped using it the lumps and bumps on the top of his arm have come back so this for him really was a wonder product as he has always disliked the eczema but nothing the Doctors gave him seemed to clear it up anything like this cream did, it is a little pricey £23.50 for 60ml however a little does go a long way. I love that the ‘Cleansing Milk’ is a soap-free make-up remover that can be used on both face and eye area. The cleanser did not irritate my eyes and it took off even my heavy eye makeup with no bother at all, I just added a small amount to a damp cotton pad and gently worked the product in circles whilst supporting the delicate skin of my eye, I then massaged the product into my face and neck and removed with a warm face flannel which left my skin feeling refreshed, I also noticed after a few weeks of using the product my skin did not look as red in areas such as my nose and around my eye area which was pleasing to notice as normally I suffer with a lot of erythema in these areas especially in the Summer with hay fever. Price £21.00
My other favourite product was the eye cream and for the main reason that the fine lines around my eyes and the dark circles where diminished by half and I did get a compliment that my lashes looked long and thick and I can only put it down to the eye cream as I have not used anything else whilst doing the trial of the product. Both products smelt delightful too as both had aromatherapy oils within them which you could really smell, especially the cleansing milk which had a fragrance of Lavender and lemon. Price £24.45 On my search for developing my new brush soap that could be used to 58
clean makeup brushes, I found a company called Exquisite Luxury www. exquisiteluxury.co.uk whilst I was developing my new brush soap with the company I managed to try some of their products too which was good as they were all organic and chemical free which is what I am always looking for in a product and of course not tested on animals too, is always a unique selling point that I am looking for in a product. I have always suffered with a dry scalp being naturally curly haired and so I tried the ‘Goats Milk Shampoo and Conditioner’ and was pleasantly surprised to find that it really did cure my itchy dry scalp. The only thing with this product was that it didn’t foam up like a normal shampoo so it took a bit of getting used to, however it did leave my hair feeling really clean and fresh but without the usual dry scalp. Shampoo and Conditioner £5.99 400ml. George Booth the Director of Exquisite Luxury helped me design a brush soap which I have named ‘MelVicMakeup Goats Milk Brush Soap’, the soap has not been launched yet as I will be launching the soap at the Wales Hair and Beauty Show in Cardiff in June and so I will share with you some pictures in the next issue. The soap is designed to bleach out makeup stains from your light coloured brushes but without the use of harsh chemicals that can damage the bristles of a brush, we have also added some aromatherapy oils Lime and Tea Tree in the right percentage that will help to kill any bacteria that may be living in your makeup brushes and natural Coconut oil that helps to hydrate your natural haired brushes but without leaving a greasy after feel that oil would normally leave. The brush soap is £14.99 however it will be on special offer for the launch so you could buy one at £12.00 which is a great price as it will last you for such a long time. More details can be found on my blog on www.melvicmakeup.com Inspired by my Karla’s frustration with the lack of correctly-shaped lip brushes on the market, her Lip Brush Set is a collection of three synthetic lip brushes designed especially for professional creative work with glosses, pigments, creams and stains. The lip brushes are Vegan & Cruelty Free, made from Taklon, a synthetic fibre. Taklon is a synthetic fibre which doesn’t have a hair cuticle and has antibacterial properties, making it much better for the skin and applying lip products. These brushes are also really useful for creating perfect brows, precision gel eyeliner and more defined lines when creating make-up looks on the face. They are soft yet firm synthetic bristles, making cream and gloss lip products easy to apply. I really enjoy using these brushes as they are quite stiff which helps you create a very straight and even edge, I also have used the brushes for creating super straight eyebrows to, so they have more uses than just being a lip brush. They were really easy due to the synthetic fibres and they also look professional in your brush roll, a great set of brushes that I would highly recommend. www.karla-cosmetics.co.uk £15.00

How To Market Your Salon Without Spending A Fortune There aren’t many business owners that don’t want to either have more clients or be making more money from their business. More money means you can grow and develop and take advantage of new opportunities, the things that most of us love about running a business. A key part of your future success is being able to market your salon effectively. If business is booming then now is the perfect time to focus on marketing, reinvest some of those profits and build upon that momentum. If business isn’t going so well, even more reason to market so that you can get back on track - don’t wait until you’re desperate, start today, marketing takes time before you see the results. What you do today may not pay off for a month, a year, or longer. Make sure marketing your business is part of your daily routine. Marketing your salon doesn’t have to cost a fortune. You should however be ready to reinvest some proportion of your profits and do it consistently to achieve results. Here are my tips;
Set a budget It seems strange that I’m starting off an article about not spending a fortune by suggesting you set a budget, but having a budget, however small is really important. I favour re-investing a percentage of profits, as this pot grows as your business does and gives you more and more opportunities to market your salon utilising some paid forms of marketing that return really well. A small budget of even a hundred pounds per month will get you started though.
Create a marketing strategy A goal without a plan is just a wish. Before you start spending that budget, make sure you 62
have a congruent plan in place that will help you achieve your goals. There’s a free eCourse on creating your marketing strategy in 7 steps on my websitewww.ericadouglas.com. Take the time to follow the steps and create your plan.
Be methodical If you have created your plan properly, and broken that plan down into steps, implementing should be really easy as it’s just a case of following the steps. Here are a few things your strategy should include;
A Website With A Blog Your business needs an online presence, your website should allow your clients to do everything they need to in one place. This may include finding out about your services, contacting you, booking appointments, or purchasing products. A blog updated on a regular basis with articles using words that people may use to search for you will help you rank better in search engines and be found more easily. It’s also a great way to educate and entertain your clients, plus it gives you something to share on social media.
A Social Media Presence Focus and master one type of social media before moving on, you don’t want to spread yourself too thin. From experience I would recommend mastering Facebook first as it works really well for small local businesses like salons. Aim to create a relationship with your clients, don’t just sell. Selling directly on social media can be really off putting, instead
you should offer your followers an incentive to join your email list, here you can promote your business in a more direct manner.
An Email List If you only do ONE thing from this article, then make it building an email list. Every business should be able to contact all of their clients at the click of a button. Can you do this? Having lots of followers on various social media sites is great, but what happens if your page is deleted? This leaves you exposed. You should be constantly collecting details from current and potential clients so that you can stay in touch and encourage them to visit your salon. “We’ve all read in the previous issue about your journey in becoming an eyelash technician. What led you to becoming a Brow Artist and could you list the brow services you do please”
Through my various beauty treatments that I performed I found that the ones I had most satisfaction from doing were the eyelashes and eyebrows. Also through talking to women, there are so many good nail technicians but not good brow technicians. I have had many a botch job done on my own that it spurred me on to become good at it. The feedback I received from my clients was great. I have many clients that will allow no one else now to touch their eyebrows. I felt my initial training did not provide me with enough tools to be able to accomplish more for my clients so....I discovered Eyebrow Extensions through ILah. This opened up a world to me of clients whom had chemotherapy and their hair had not grown back etc. The glue used is a medical glue suitable to be put directly onto the skin and with my Eyelash Extension training I was able to pick up the treatment procedure easily. BUT this procedure only lasts about two weeks with this glue so I looked further afield to other treatments. I love the natural look both in eyebrows and eyelash extensions so I discovered Microblading which is a Semi Permanent makeup procedure which creates a lovely natural looking Eyebrow for the client. At this stage I had to make decisions in my career as I felt by introducing semi permanent make up treatment into my Beauty Room that I could not be doing Spray Tanning also etc as I wanted the room as clean as possible so I decided to specialise in Eyelash and Eyebrows. Also I am recognising that not all clients want an invasive treatment especially after undergoing chemotherapy so I have a treatment now which paints the skin with natural hair like strokes under the Eyebrow Extensions. This lasts up to 3 weeks with proper aftercare. And I am currently awaiting Eyebrow Wigs also that can be placed on the skin and re-used if cared for properly.
I wish to have more variety of treatments to suit whatever the client wants or requires for her eyelashes, eyebrows or lack of in either case. - Joanne Dawson

Building your Lash Tribe vs buying Likers What is a Lash tribe? And why would you want to build your own? First let’s look at what a ‘Tribe’ is. A Tribe is a social group of people who are connected to one another. They are connected to a leader, and follow the same idea. A Lash Tribe - as I like to call the tribe that is niched to our Lash businessare the people who are your genuine fans, your Likers. Attracted to your business, because they like your content, business ethics, morals, mission. They may be your existing clients, potential clients, and perhaps fellow Lash Stylists. Even family and friends may want to be in your tribe, because they support you and your business, and because don’t forget….they have friends!!!! Those friends then will stumble upon your business, and may want to be initiated into your tribe too!
But let’s slow down a bit and let’s identify who should not be in your tribe. Your Lash Tribers are not Likers who were paid, bribed or held at gunpoint to Like your Page, Instagram account or any other Social Media Platform. Genuine Lash Tribers that have frolicked to your business via your Facebook, Instagram, or other Social Media platforms, absolutely love what you show them, what you offer them, share with them, That’s why they have come to you and liked you or followed you. Your Tribers will communicate with you, engage with you, build longlasting relationships with you and your business, and will happily follow you, over several social platforms, because they can’t get enough of you. As they engage with your content they draw in others who are likeminded and who want to be part of your tribe. You know how on Facebook when you like something, it pops up in your friends’ newsfeed and all of a sudden your friends like or share it too? That kind of pull effect happens every time your Tribers like, comment or share your content. It brings in more Likers to you, and expands your Lash Tribe. You want to encourage this, by providing valuable content that is important to your fans (remember? Focus on your target audience). There’s something satisfying about ‘building your own tribe’! You bring likeminded people together, build a community, and create a following! Sounds great doesn’t it? I mean after hearing all this, why would you want to take the shortcut of just buying your Likers? Some businesses will ‘buy’ Likers/Fans to look established, and ‘popular’,
64
and I’m sure that this has its place somewhere within the social media business world…but not for you! Because you want to build a genuine community right?! Right?! Seriously though, I will not tell you to NOT ‘buy’ your Likers or Fans, but I would like to tell you why it‘s not worth it! And why building a genuine community, a Lash Tribe, is so much more rewarding and effective for your business.
So again, why is buying Likers, a bad idea? 1. Bought Likers are fake Likers. Fake accounts, often created by one person with multiple accounts to add to your likes. Even worse! Often these are genuine accounts that have been hacked, and sold on! 2. Bought Likers are random and so most likely they will not be interested in your business, they may be from overseas and thus may be useless to your business(if your focus are local clients). They may NEVER become your clients and bring you money. 3. Fake Likers will not interact with you and appreciate your content; therefore Facebook will rank your page as not interesting and rank it low in the feed. 4. They don’t care about your business and what you have to offer or the content you show them! 5. It is far better to have fewer Likers that are genuine fans aka your Lash Tribe and absolutely LOVE everything you put in front of them. This will
increase your interaction and you won’t feel like you are talking to the wall…HELLOOO!!! Anybody out there??? If you build your own Lash Tribe, you will have people following you because they are genuinely interested in what you have to say and show, and what you can do for them. In return they will reward you with their trust and their loyalty, and…they will be happy to give you their hard earned money!
So how do you build a Lash Tribe? Here are my top 5 tips (plus a Super-Fly bonus tip at the end): 1. Work out who your target audience is? Who is your client? What do they like? What do they like to talk about? Do they like to be inspired? Do they want to know more about eyelash extensions? What else do they like? Shopping? Fashion? Yoga?... And finally Who is YOUR ideal client? 2. Create content that appeals to those clients Go over your past posts and see which posts were popular. Perhaps some of your Lash Tribers have liked similar posts? For example Lady A likes all your lash info posts while Lady B likes your inspirational and your lash info posts. Create more of those. 3. People care only 20% about you and your business. They care about themselves and what YOU can do for them about 80% So what can you do for them? Why should they like your page? Why should they keep coming back? Why should they choose your business? Bonus tip: On Facebook, content about your business should be kept to 20%, in the remaining 80% you should show your Tribers what you can do for them. How can they benefit? Be entertained, be inspired. 4. Having said that…Put more of YOU into your business! But not YOU as in ‘I have a SALE on at the moment!!!’ But more like; YOU lashing, or YOU in your salon, or YOU with YOUR happy client … I don’t know about you but I always love love! Love! The behind the scenes posts and photos! You know when you follow a business or a famous person, and they show you every now and then a photo of their studio, salon, home, or what they are doing right now?! I love it! Your Lash Tribe loves it too! Show them that behind the business, there is a real person and hash tag it #WIDN (What I’m Doing NOW) 5. Don’t just sell, tell stories People come to Facebook to be entertained, not to be sold something! People flock to Instagram to look at beautiful photos and get a snippet
of people’s lives, not to be sold something! People go on Pinterest to be inspired not to be sold something! So keep that in mind when creating your attractive content. And….Content shared to your Lash Tribe should revolve around what your target audience wants to see or know more about. Although the above tips may seem like they are Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest specific, they apply to many of the other social media platforms too (Twitter, Blogs etc)…I just like those three in particular, so I focused on them here. Now my Super - Fly bonus tip for you: You don’t have to be EVERYWHERE! You don’t have to run out and signup to all of the social media platforms out there! If you’re time poor, or you’re a novice to this entire Social Media Luna park, Pick 1-2 platforms that you love, and rock them! Pick 2-3 because you really enjoy them all. And if you have the time to do more, by all means be on more platforms! But don’t feel like you have to be everywhere, because others are. Having said that, if you absolutely dislike social media platforms or just ‘don’t get them’ may I suggest you still do at least 1-2? Read up on them and educate yourself, because guess what? That’s where you’re clients are! So if you are serious about gaining more clients, excelling your business or building your Lash Tribe, YOU HAVE TO BE OUT THERE! If you need help figuring this Social Media Maze out, then joining Social Media help Groups on Facebook, like ‘Build your Lash Tribe’, can be the thing for you. If you would like to join Build your Lash Tribe, please email me at yourlashesbykasia@gmail.com If you want more of an intense course in marketing, you can join Louise Prunty’s 6 months Virtual Mentoring Course. You will get email based business advice over a 6 month period. Louise’s 6 months Virtual Mentoring Course is $59.99

Building a genuine following, may take you longer than just going and buying Likers for your Lash Tribe. However the experience of bringing fans to your social media platforms, and building a genuine community of likeminded people, will be much more rewarding and valuable to your business in the long run. You will learn so much about your target audience and you will learn even more about your business. It is an invaluable part of the journey of building a community, your Lash Tribe.
