HOW TO HAVE FUN WITH LASHES BY MIRANDA TARPEY
Lash extensions have come a long way since my initial training days, we were once quite happy to be able to apply a great set of classic lashes but nowadays we want to be more artistic and show our creative flare. If your looking at adding a little extra bling to your lashes but don’t know how to start, here is a beginners guide of fun in our lash field.
STEP 1 Decide on your theme, happy, sophisticated, colourful anything goes!
STEP 5 Apply your glitter lashes on top of the volume lashes to create height and sparkle. Decorate the lashes as you choose.
sad,
STEP 2 Choose a model that would suit your theme, you don’t really want to use a female if your theme is King Kong, for best results , a suitable model will execute your decorative work effortlessly. Our Theme – Party Masquerade Model chosen, mask chosen; let’s see how it looks with our model
We added glitter to one eye
STEP 4 DECORATING THE LASHES You can add any lightweight decoration such as feathers, gems or glitter. For our theme we will use Gold Glitter. How to make Glitter lashes: You will need lash extensions – we used 0.10mm, long 13mm, Black, C curl Loose glitter Adhesive – clear bond for coloured lashes or black for black lashes. Dip your lashes in adhesive then dip into glitter.
STEP 3 LASHES Apply a full set of volume lashes in any colour that would suit your theme, we have used black for a little sophistication, L curl was chosen to open up our models eyes, 6
STEP 6 Apply makeup to your model following the colours of your theme, include eyes and lips, lower lashes can also have lash extensions or decoration. Dress your model with costume. STEP 7 You have now created your fun lashes ready for photos! What a difference!

GLOBAL LASH SUMMIT UK by Loreta J. director www.flawlesslashesbyloreta.com
The brainchild of Loreta Jesilionyte, Eva Zacharias and Jill Heijligers-Peloquin was to bring together lash artists in three locations, Long Beach, California, Sasktoon Canada and finally Gatwick, East Sussex, UK to give them an advanced level of continuing education for professional eyelash extension practitioners.
geeks in one place with the same goal, to learn. Loreta took to the stage (the room looked amazing!) she introduced all of the speakers and told us what to expect from the day.
The global lash summit set out to empower the lash professional to be the expert your clients needs you to be and position yourself as a leader in the fast growing niche of the beauty industry. The UK leg of the summit was over 2 very full days of instruction and hands on workshops including:
Next up was the wonderfully creative Eva Zacharias from Canada, who presented “Design, Balance and Artistry” or how to make classic and volume lashes look perfectly designed for your client and how to achieve texture and depth. She also demonstrated her app “My Lash Book” this is well worth a look if you struggle with what style suits your client, it has new and exciting features coming soon. Eva also talked in depth about lash artistry and how to make flowers out of strip lashes.
- Original volume lashing techniques. - Fantasy lash art secrets. - Insiders secrets to lash competitions. - Goodie bags and much more...
After Eva’s talk was over we got hands on making flowers with varying degrees of success, the other international lash masters went to every table to offer help, it was lots of fun. Eva is a very talented artist and her award winning background in hair really showed in her styling advice.
The first day started early with an 8am registration, a “meet and greet” and continental breakfast. It was great to meet lash artists not just from the UK but from all over the world and to meet some of the people you had only talked to on FaceBook.
Next up, Loreta spoke about her volume “locking technique” and also how to clean and prep clients lashes correctly, she spoke of how to pick up the correct amount of glue/adhesive and also where to place the fan for best bonding. Again we got hands on, making our fans, talking with our fellow lashers, all with our slightly different techniques. The international masters came around gently guiding us and gave little tips to help us make perfect fans and pick up the correct amount of glue.
Everyone was excited to get into the conference room with around 80 lash 8
Then we had a well deserved break before Jill Heijligers-Peloquin presented “Low to High” and “Volume” techniques. Jill started off by talking about what lash extensions are made from and how they are made. Then one of her volume techniques, the bounce method, which was very handy! Then Jill talked about styling and the point of emphasis. There is so much to styling and so many different things to learn. We also got to play with Jill’s very smart app called Virtual Lash & Brow, it has face recognition technology that can superimpose lashes onto the image of your clients face! We also had more hands on time doing her volume technique. After lunch Agnieska Kwiatkowsk presented her talk about “tips and tricks in eyelash extensions”, she covered the importance of the analysis of the clients eye shape and how to correct a droopy eye. She also shared her new and exciting “Cloudy Effect” volume technique. Hilaree Brand from Empire Lashes spoke next, with a witty and informative talk about the common pitfalls of volume. She had us all finding our sweet spots, on our tweezers of course(!) and getting us to work our “pimps and ho’s”. She talked about what advice to give clients in lash rehab and demonstrated her Empire multi length lashes on one strip.
Day two started with Petr Lhotský talking about the rules for competition and what they mark on and how these tiny details can be applied to improve our own work. Then 12 very brave girls took part in a “mock competition” involving some classic and volume. We were able to watch close up, their set ups and volume techniques styling. The international masters offered advice as they worked. You could feel the stress in the competition area. It’s safe to say our hearts went out to the girls as the hours ticked down to the judging. While the girls worked on their competition lashes the rest of the delegates went shopping for new lash products, made new business contacts and made new friends. The international masters were still giving us one on one or small group mentoring up until the end of the mock competition. When the competition finished, we watched the judging and saw exactly what they were looking for when marking and the competitors could see where they could improve their work. After lunch was guest speaker Ian Archibald from The Olympia Beauty Show who announced the launch of The Lash Games which is set to be the biggest lash competition the UK has ever seen, coming in October 2016. The competition categories will be:
Beginners
Up to 1.5 years’ experience and has never entered a competition before UK or Internationally
Masters
Between 1.5-2.5 years’ experience, may have competed but never won either UK or Internationally
Professionals
Minimum of 2.5 years’ experience and has competed and won either UK or Internationally
Experts
2.5 years and above experience and applies only to teachers and trainers both UK & Internationally
Next came something different, Sal Jefferies, the yoga guy, showed us stretching, relaxation and yoga benefits. He had us up out of our seats, stretching our tight shoulders and necks, with deep breathing exercises to relax us. Then came some mindfulness work and he got us to think about how our clients see us, what is their first impression?, “What if you met you, what would you be like?”. Very different very interesting.
If you have trained in Classic Lashes for 3+ years but in Volume lashes less than 1.5 years and you would like to compete in the Volume category, then you can only compete in the Beginners category. Experts with more than 3 years of eyelash extensions experience or if you hold a trainers qualification but have less than 3years experience, or if you have won Lash competitions before in Master or expert category (Certificates will need to be produced before you can enter). Only the organisers can make a decision about the category you will compete in. This was a wonderful weekend filled with fun, laughter, knowledge, friendship, prizes and half-dressed men with champagne. Don’t miss the 2016 Global Summits!
The final speaker of the day was Tatiana Terentjeva she talked in depth on how to achieve the smooth transition between lash lengths and how to mix curls. This was very interesting and she gave us a lot of information to take on board. 9

TOP TIPS by Aoife Durity I always ask new clients to send me selfies of themselves with everyday makeup on or without, if they don’t wear any, so that I can judge better which style and possible lengths to shape them with. For example, with this client, I notice straight away that the space between her eyes is a bit bigger than either side of her eyes, so she has slightly wide set eyes therefore I won’t be flicking out the shape too much, thus not drawing out her eyes wider. Also in the middle of her right eye (left as you look at the picture) her lid is starting to droop. I’ll be reaching for D curls in this section. She likes thick eyeliner so I will do Russian Volume to mimick this. Her brow shape and space between her eye sockets and brows will determine the lengths (taking note of the length of her own lashes)

beauty in nature transitioned into the same as it relates to people—all of us. If everyone looked the same we would get really tired of looking at each other, right? Where is the beauty in that? What we concluded is there would be none. And therein lies the true definition of beauty—diversity. Just like the diverse landscapes that nature provides, the intrinsic beauty in each of us comes from being uniquely different. Who Defines Beauty? After we had discovered the definition of beauty, at least from our perspective (don’t expect it to be in Webster’s) it was now time to figure out where we fit into that definition. We asked ourselves, “Who defines beauty?” Who makes each individual more unique and beautiful? Who adds diversity to the world? It didn’t take long before I emphatically said, “We do!” It’s the artists—the lash, hair and makeup artists enhance our natural beauty and give each of us a tailored look that is unique to us. As a lash artist myself, it all started to make sense and come together. That’s what we were doing and how we fit in to the definition of beauty. Honor Great Artists and Artistry
DEFINING BEAUT Y
WITH BORBOLETA by Kim Jaynes, Founder & CEO Beauty isn’t something that can be captured—it’s living, breathing and wild. It’s something a little different for each of us, yet so easy to recognize—like a butterfly. Each one unique, but equally beautiful. KJ What is the definition of beauty? This is the question my husband Craig and I were trying to answer on a road trip in the early spring of 2013. As we were on the precipice of creating and launching a new beauty brand, I became fixated on this word “beauty”. What did it really mean anyway, and how did it relate to what we were doing? Moments of inspiration came as we drove along the I-15 corridor and became aware of the natural beauty that surrounded us. Craig, being the true renaissance man that he is, continued to point out the diversity in the landscape passing outside our windows. From the red rocks and deserts to the forested mountains and lush plains, the intrinsic beauty in everything around us came from it just being different and unique, not from it looking one certain way.
28
Then Craig asked the question, “What if it was all the same? What if everything looked the same?” It was a simple question, but one that begged our attention and had it for the next few hours. The discussion around diversity and
Borboleta is defining beauty by celebrating diversity and the perfect imperfections that make each one of us one-of-a-kind. We honor great artists and artistry that inspire humanity with creativity and push the industry forward—defining beauty every step of the way by making the world a more diverse, unique and beautiful place to be. When you define beauty with Borboleta, you get world-class education, certification and support (premium products and customer service) that enable you to add uniquely defining characteristics to any woman—and make them one of a kind. Just like every Picasso started with a fresh palette, so too does every masterpiece you create as a lash artist. Our goal is to provide lash artists the best education, tools and support for your artistry. The Art of Lashing At the time I met Erin Taylor I was developing our education program and looking for someone to lead the charge. Erin was a very coveted educator in the industry and had other offers out, but when we met sparks flew and we knew we had to work together. With Erin at the helm, we worked tirelessly to develop the most accredited and thorough education program in the industry that focused on correct technique, hands-on training and artistry, aka “the Art of Lashing”. Together with our expert team of master lash artists and educators, Borboleta has raised the bar and created a new standard in the industry. That’s why Borboleta certified artists are standing out, because they are true artists trained in the Art of Lashing, not just technicians applying lash extensions. Before Borboleta, no one was teaching or emphasizing this in their training courses.
What we’ve found is there is a distinct difference between technicians and artists. Technique is critical, but it’s one thing to place an extension onto a lash correctly. It’s completely different to be able to look at someone’s unique features and eye shape and design a set of lashes that enhances their natural beauty. That’s truly an art and artist that fits the definition of beauty. No one is better at this than Christian Zamora of Christian Zamora Studio in New York City. Christian is a master lash and makeup artist in Manhattan with an A-list celebrity clientele and was my secret lash crush (not a secret anymore). When we met this past year in July, despite my awkward display of nerves and stardom, it just clicked. Of course he had already tried our product line and fell in love, but here I was with Christian Zamora sharing the same vision and dream. We were on the same level and had the same passion for the Art of Lashing, education and elevating the industry. “It’s not about the number of lashes you apply, but the technique and level of artistry by which you apply them,” I remember him saying. It was amazing to hear him say that Borboleta was blazing it’s own trail and already so far ahead of anyone else in the industry—and he would love to be apart of what we were building. Our scheduled hour turned into four plus as we discussed his then future role with Borboleta as Master of Artistry.
available in the first half of this year. The Master Course will be 100% focused on artistry and the Art of Lashing—looking at someone’s unique features and tailoring a custom set of lashes that shapes the eye to enhance their natural beauty. Without giving away too much, we can say there will be much more covered in this course— including a lot of things that have previously been kept outside the realm of lashing. As we get closer to launching, we will provide more details and reveal the curriculum in its entirety and exactly what certified artists can expect to get out of it. Once available, only certified Borboleta artists that have taken and completed our intro course (Classic) and advanced course (Volume) will be eligible for enrollment. Whether you’re a salon, spa or lounge owner that offers lash extensions, or a lash artist with your own studio, we invite you to come and define beauty with Borboleta. Make sure you are ready to enroll in our new Master Artistry Course when it launches later this year. Check out our website for upcoming Classic and Volume courses in your region or give us a call at 801-735-2439 to talk to someone about how you can start defining beauty with Borboleta.
Continued Education As an artist mastering your skill you have to be constantly learning, evolving and re-inventing yourself. No one knows this better than Christian. The pressure for NYC artists in the beauty industry to continually learn, evolve and re-invent themselves is intense. “The moment you think you know it all and cannot learn from anyone,” Christian said, “is the moment you’re in trouble.” Continuing your education is key to your progression as an artist and the artistry you create. This is why Borboleta offers our certified artists the ability to attend any of our training courses again for free to refresh on the latest techniques and trends and refine their artistry. It really is a network, a community of artists that share the same passion and lift each other up to a higher standard. You’re either moving forward or backward, and continued education and networking are the determining factors on which way you move. Borboleta’s Master Artistry Course & Certification With a commitment to continued education and Christian now on board, we started talking about the need for a Master Artistry Course for lashing. Since then—Erin, Christian and I, along with our other master artists and instructors, have begun to develop the curriculum and requisites for the new course and certification. Christian will be heading up the program and will have his stamp of approval on every certification awarded. We anticipate this course being
As Master of Artistry for Borboleta, Zamora will play a critical role in the development and oversight of the company’s Artistry Program including the introduction of a Master Artistry Course and Certification for lash extensions.

MY LASH STORY BY MAYA ANDREEA REHMAN
HI Lash lovers, My name is Maya Andreea Rehman, and I have been lashing since March 2015. I have been in love with beauty treatments since I was 13 and decided to qualify in massage therapy when I first came to Scotland and then later on in beauty therapy. I am currently finishing my HND in beauty therapy this year. My passion for eyelash extensions started when one of my clients came in for a facial treatment, and I noticed her thick and long eyelashes. Initially, I was oblivious to what eye lash extensions where and how they should look, but I fell in love with the idea of having extensions put in. I have then set myself a personal goal to learn more about other avenues in Beauty therapy that my clients were passionate about. Once I completed my course, I booked in my beauty clients straight away to have free eyelash extension sets. From what at the beginning took me 4 hours, I gradually decreased my time to less than 2 hours per session and now charging £30. Currently, I only offer classic eyelash extensions. However, I am hoping to give my clients volume sets in the future (once I become great at classic). I thoroughly enjoy learning more in this field, researching, looking
I have Facebook groups and magazines to further thank in this field as the support offered by others more experienced in this field gave me additional support and confidence to being as successful as I should be in this field. I have learnt and developed a lot. Without the help of this magazine, Louise Prunty and Francine Widdows (lash tech tutorials group) I know I wouldn’t have been learning as fast. These people are keeping me going (and not throw away my tweezers like a baby!). At the moment I am doing beauty treatments and eyelash extensions in my home salon, combining both I believe it gives a great pampering experience to my clients who want to look and feel good. I believe that I am still a “baby” in the lash world and have so much to learn, but I totally believe that with lots of hard work I can become a very well-known eyelash stylist and mentor. The people and things that have and will continue to inspire me to become an eyelash stylist are everyone within this business, people that have just started and people that started all this a long time ago such as Charles Nessler in 1902.
at forums, blogs and reading up on this through social media as well
as YouTube, attending seminars and travelling to conventions. These
digital channels are very helpful and interactive and give me an insight into the dynamics of becoming a successful eyelash technician. 30
I know whatever is worth having is not easy to get but once you do, you don’t have to work one day for the rest of your life. I very much believe in continuous professional development and even though it can get expensive believe me you get your money’s worth back. Any magazine, book or course you can read or take, do it as there is a real return on investment from it. You are setting yourself up for your future. Eyelash extensions business is a fast track business, and there is something new at every corner, and that’s why I completely love it as it never gets boring.

EWELINA SIATKIEWICZ LASH ARTIST STORY
MAGNITICA LASHES
My name is Ewelina Siatkiewicz. I am the founder of Magnitica Lashes, an eyebrow and eyelash beauty accessories brand. We’ve been present on the Polish market for five years so far. During our beginnings, there were three other brands active in this field, including only one domestic Polish company. Five years ago, Polish beauty services included only 1:1 lash extensions, usually with 0.20 or even 0.25 thickness. 0.15 lash extensions were slow moving stock, and thinner ones were practically unavailable. Our customers were often reluctant to give up loose lashes in favour of lash kits, but they were trustful towards glues. The market was difficult – open to novelty but at the same time prone to choosing the cheapest, lower quality accessories. The selection was small and products were either overpriced or too cheap, of dubious quality. My dream was to provide products that would be beautiful, aesthetic, good quality, but also affordable so that more women could discover lash extensions. The dream has come true – now we’re one of the leading domestic companies. Our Magnitica family hires 23 very talented Lash Instructors. We run training countrywide and abroad, teaching eyelash extension basics, 2-3d methods, Russian Volume 4-8d, permanent mascara, coloured lash styling, permanent eyebrow makeup (hair stroke method). We continuously participate in international courses in order to expand our qualifications. We offer everything even the most demanding stylist could dream of – a selection of eyelash tapes, twenty kinds of tweezers, nine types of lash thickness and six types of curl. Our favourites are glues and bespoke volume method tweezers, covered with 24-karat gold – a set of six wonderful pairs of tweezers, Volume Masters mirrors and special tweezers for separating eyelashes. We’re aware that every stylist is an individual who appreciates beauty, so we pay special attention to a variety of choices and beautiful design. Magnitica’s trademark colour has always been pink. It’s a typically female colour, but it takes courage to wear it from top to toe. It’s also the colour of optimism and positive outlook, a symbol of thankfulness, worthiness, admiration and respect. Lighter shades of pink emphasise
subtlety and charm in a woman while a darker tone of pink can express sincere thankfulness. Our shade of pink offers an escape from everyday routine into fairytale-like magic. It is a power colour of a beautiful, selfconfident woman and, last but not least, an optimistic note in everyday lash styling routine. Magnitica is pink and positive. I’m that kind of person myself – I always have others in mind, I try to walk through life with a smile on my face and treat people the way I’d like to be treated. I apply the same rules to my business, and I try to make my company be like one big family. Our Instructors are not only talented but also beautiful, funny and 33

JESSICA MOGAURO
EAST COAST LASH AND BROW TRAINING PEABODY MA Every girl daydreams as they flip through the pages of fashion and beauty magazines. My dream was to one day be a part of the photo that made girls wish they could have that look. In 2004 I became a licensed esthetician and I have loved every moment of it. After getting married and starting a family I felt like I needed something more! I came across a class for eyelash extensions in 2011 and knew I had to see what it was all about. Unfortunately it was awful, and I could not believe that they would certify you with a 6 hour class. No print outs or even a power point presentation. How could they just hand me adhesives, tweezers, lashes and a certificate and send me on my way? I became determined to find better training and trainers. I needed confidence in myself if I was going to peruse this new adventure. I convinced every friend and family member I could to let me practice all that I had learned. Three friends turned into five, then not long after word of mouth had me so busy I was traveling all around Massachusetts North and South Shore. I spent two years compiling all the research and data that I could on lashing. My main goal was to create a non-product driven class and provide real answers and training based on true products. I wanted my curriculum to be present and create confident students with real skills. I began training at the Face Forward Inc facility in Peabody Massachusetts two years ago. Being in front of my future lashers has changed my world. I have a private Facebook page for my graduates only, so we can chat, share pics and positive feedback. This past year I have added Eyebrow Extension to the course selections. It has had an overwhelming response just as I had suspected. Eyebrow reconstruction is our chance to be creative and experiment with new looks and trends. Our clients are always looking for instant gratification and we can are lucky to have to skills at our disposal. We can’t stop now! Keep the education coming!!!

HOW TO FIND THE BEST TRAINING COURSE FOR YOU! If you are looking to start your career in the beauty industry, if you are looking to set up your own business or if you are looking to add new treatments to your portfolio then you will be searching for the best training available. So, what should you be looking for? Thorough and fully accredited training is as important as high-quality products. One without the other will not get you happy and loyal clients and good and reliable results. We refer to our training as the learning journey‌.. The first day of the training is just the start and with so many things to consider and look out for we aim to equip you with the basic theory and skill in a personal training day with your trainer. But we don’t just sign you off and send you into a competitive workplace! Instead we work closely with you during the important case study period where we can help you, mentor and support you with advice so that you can progress and improve through a series of studies to build your skill level and
set new goals in order to further improve so that you can learn, gain competence and confidence as you work along. Once you achieve your own goals and the qualifications set by your trainer you are signed off and certified. However, then the important third part of your journey continues with learning through experiences, daily requirements and different clients who may require a varied degree of skill and knowledge. With your trainer at hand to answer any questions, encourage and motivate you, a close bond forms, creating reassurance and confidence and throughout time many friendships form. Learning does not end on the day but it takes many days, weeks and months to perfect what you want to achieve and we would like to help you and guide you through this for the very rewarding moment when you are proud of yourself for what you have achieved and how far you have come in fulfilling your dream.

5 GOLDEN BROW TIPS - TO THE BROW ARTIST By Freja Holtz / SOPH Studio & Academy Eyebrows may well be the This plays a big part in telling you how wide you are going to leave the brows and just how most important feature of the much her eyes can carry. Even though I love face. We use them far more full brows, it might not be the right choice for than most people think. They a tiny lid-space... play an important role in Always remember to be realistic in addition to nonverbal communication. the natural brow - you do not want to make the brows 5 times bigger with make-up. Brows frame the eyes and the whole face. At the same Why is this shape of the face even important in time, it is an interesting fact relation to the shape of the brows? Because the shape of the brows will change the expression that this part is also the most of the face in an instant. neglected area of the body. As 2. Avoid breakouts and a brow artist – I made it my damaged skin mission to change that. How do you start? What shape do you choose? Most people are lost in this area. The clients have no idea how to shape their own brows, so this is where you come in. In this article, I am going to give you 5 of my golden brow tips that will guide you towards the perfect brow treatments.
1. Make those brows personal Never use the same standard brow shape on every client. Keep in mind; every single person is unique - his or her brows should be too. Before you start your brow treatment, have your client sit in front of you, look straight at her face and figure out which face shape she HAS. Is she a heart, square, diamond, long, round or a regular oval? This is the first, very important, step to take. If your client has a very round face, you might want to go for more arched brows. Is her face long – then flatten those brows. The next important question: How wide is the space from the brow to the base of the lashes? 46
Have you ever had those clients that keep coming back with troubled skin after a wax treatment? This can give every brow artist bad nerves...
You often see the skin breaks out after a wax treatment when your client is sunburnt, uses certain types of medicine or if she is simply just stressed out... Why does this happen? Fact: regular face wax (strip wax) peels the upper layer of the skin. Therefore, if your client tends to have even just a little sensitive skin, her skin might react with a breakout, maybe blisters or even tiny “scratches”. With regular face wax, you will never be able to avoid this. It will happen for you now and then. If you could avoid this, no matter what, never having to worry about your client’s skin type or condition, it would be perfect, right? This might be one of my most golden tips for you: Throw out your regular face wax and start using hot wax! Hot wax is a new type of wax that hardens in a few seconds, so there is no use of strips. It does not attach to the skin,
This is not to say that arched brows are a “no go”, but not everybody can carry these defined arched brows. Sometimes all you need to do is just tone it down. Round them off… Make them softer…. Straighten them out a bit. In general, “less is more”. The individual face shape and the characteristic of the clients face needs to be able to carry these defined arched brows. Once again – remember to make your brow stylings personal.
5. The link between what the client wishes for - and you as an artist When a client steps into my studio I always have a very clear thought of how I want the brows shaped, which colors suit her best and how to apply the make-up. I always have an extensive consultation before every (first time) treatment, and in this way, we match the expectations. Sometimes it glides very easily. I get an idea of who she is, and the client lets me do my thing. However, sometimes the client has a very clear idea of exactly what she wants. Sometimes they even bring me photos... Of course, you are going to give your client what she wants and make her happy - just do not forget yourself in this. Always match expectations. Explain your views on her wishes; what will suit her the best and why. It is not 100% possible to copy those brows from the photo she brought. Be kind but professional and make her feel safe. I believe that the link between what the client wants and what you think is best is the balance you should strive for.
so there is no peeling of the skin; you can even wax 5-6 times the same place. My personal favorite hot wax is Lycon and, best of all, their products are 100% natural and very effective. Remember: No matter how mild your wax is, how clean your own hands are (you maybe even use gloves) or how sterile your products are - as soon as you wax, you remove large amounts of hair and you automatically expose the roots of the hairs around the brows. Do not touch waxed areas with unclean fingers – if you do, it might result in getting a few pimples and unclean skin. Therefore, always advise your clients only to touch the area with clean fingers – or even better not touching them at all (the next day or so).
I love seeing the amazing transformation of a great brow treatment. I do my best every day - always striving towards being better. I learn every day from every treatment and job I have. Do yourself a favour and take a lot of photos of your work! Not for others, but for you. A photo reveals every single flaw. The ones you did not see along the way...
3. Don’t follow the shape of the natural brow Fill the make-up in where needed. Fill in the holes and missing hairs to enhance the shape of the brows and not where the natural hair is dense already. This is typically one of the things the client always does incorrectly when she fills in her brows at home and just fills in with make-up wherever her natural hairs are placed. Pass on this advice to your client. Always, always focus on symmetry. It will not always be possible to create complete symmetry after only one treatment - great brows are a process - but use the make-up to get the brows as symmetrical as possible.
4. Tone down your arched brows
We work in an industry in constant movement. Keep it up and keep improving!
Arched brows are very in now – and loved worldwide. Just be careful; do not let the arched brows dominate in general... Too arched brows will make you look older. No matter how young you are - nobody wants to look old. Have this in mind when you style. 47
BEAUTY NEWS By Kelly-Ann Woodland
PRODUCT LAUNCHES The start of 2016 brings some fabulous new product launches in the world of beauty and fragrance ...... and the end of 2015 was pretty memorable too. Here’s what caught our eye:
COMING UP ROSES ... February 1st 2016 sees the launch of the Rose Couture fragrance from Elie Saab ..... a new scent just in time for Valentine’s Day. Rose Couture has been developed from the heart of Elie Saab Le Parfum, brightening the orange blossom with rose petal honey. The scent features peony in its top notes, leading to a rose nectar enhanced with fruity facets and softened with vanilla and jasmine. The woody base is created with sandalwood and patchouli. It costs £34 for 30ml, £52 for 50ml and £70 for 90ml.
HAIR HELPER Dry Shampoo can be a life saver when you’re tight on time and we love this new one by Aveda. Shampure Dry Shampoo features the classic Aveda aroma with 25 pure flower and plant essences, including certified organic Lavender, Petit Grain and Ylang Ylang to naturally refresh hair in between washes. The packaging is also respectful to the planet as it can be recycled and the bottle features a non-aerosol “mist” delivery system that mimics an aerosol. Gold stars all round for not being damaging to the environment Aveda! Shampure Dry Shampoo costs £22 and launched in the UK in November 2015.
ANOTHER ADDITION TO BENEFIT’S “THEY’R REAL!” FAMILY The cute and quirky brand knows a winning formula when it sees one, so it’s hardly surprising the hugely popular “They’re Real!” mascara range branched out further at the end of 2015. December 26th saw the UK release of the “They’re Real!” Tinted Primer (£18.50) which can be worn without mascara to tint and define the lashes for a feathery, natural look. Last summer saw the launch of the brand’s coloured “They’re Real!” Push-up Liners, but I think the Primer is what will really get fans going. Anything to voooommmph up those lashes!

NEW YEAR SCENTS The Library of Fragrance is introducing two new fragrances for the new year, Cardam
LUSCIOUS LIPS Flaky lips can spell the kiss of death for even the most elegantly crafted, professional make-up application and who wouldn’t avoid that sort of kiss? With her nourishing lip balm at the ready, Kelly-Ann Woodland finds out how to fix those lips. It must be very frustrating for dehydrated lips; watching water and other liquids pass by them all day long and yet they stand by with a pouty expression waiting for their turn. Chapped lips are crying out for some much-needed moisture and nourishment. Sure, you can slip on a sliver of Vaseline at night, but does that really compensate for all the air conditioning in work and the bitter, winter wind outside drying out that pout? Probably not. As a beauty writer and general makeup addict, I’ve tried just about every trick in the book to combat this beauty blip: nourishing lip balm .... check. Tubes of exfoliating lip salves with little grainy bits to get rid of those flakes of skin .... tried it. Soft, soaked toothbrush .... yes, been there too. So, imagine my delight when I discovered the skincare specialists at Clarins were bringing back their glorious Lip Comfort Oils.
Aside from lighting up your make-up bag with their gleaming, rectangular jewel-look, these wonderful oils are fit for any pouting princess by instantly nourishing lips. Clarins have now brought the Instant Light Lip Comfort Oils (£18) back permanently, with two to choose from: honey or raspberry. The nourishing formula contains oils of mirabelle plum, jojoba and hazelnut for lips that feel more comfortable and appear fuller. The gel is non-sticky and literally glides on. It’s my new bedtime partner! After being so impressed by the results, I thought I’d contact Clarins to
seek expert advice on lips to share with “Lash Inc” readers. As Head of Treatment Development for the brand in the UK, Marie Schmidt certainly knows a thing or two about good skincare. Here are her top tips for lips: • The best way to care for the lips in the winter months is to keep them moisturised and hydrated at all times throughout the day, especially if you are outside. Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil or Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm are great for keeping lips soft, smooth and hydrated.
• A few times a week, gently exfoliate the lips to remove any dry skin this will allow lip balms to work efficiently and keep lip soft and smooth. Gentle Peeling Smooth Away Cream is an easy way to smooth, remove dry, flaky skin and keep lips soft. Using a soft toothbrush is also a great daily skin softer for the lips to use with circular movements gently over the lips.
Oils, there are a number of other lip treatments out there which deserve gold stars:
• When using hydrating masks for the face, especially during the winter, make sure the lips are treated too. Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil can be used as an intensive overnight treatment to lock in moisture and keep lips supple.

Of course, this is just a selection and there are so many other products out there to treat and paint your pout. However, all that matters is that you give your lips some TLC this winter and let the only thing that cracks it be a smile.

PIXIWOO INTERVIEW
She’s one of MAC’s top artists who spends her life travelling the world, painting the faces of the rich and famous at all the red carpet events. Senior Artist for MAC, Cher Webb takes time out to speak to Lash Inc about her love of make-up, life and lashes.
They are Britain’s biggest beauty bloggers, with their make-up tutorials notching up millions of views. If you like all things beauty and you’ve never heard of “Pixiwoo” before, then you must have been living in a cave with no WIFI connection. Sisters Nic and Sam Chapman have created quite an empire from their brilliant, step-by-step videos and now also have their own best-selling line of make-up brushes, Real Techniques. The glamorous, yet downto-earth, pair juggle filming and editing their videos, with touring the world for shoots and promoting their brand and brushes. And it all started just seven years ago when Sam took to YouTube to show a friend how to do a smokey eye... They took time out from their ultra-busy schedule promoting their brushes to talk to Kelly-Ann Woodland about life as online beauty gurus, juggling make-up with motherhood and, of course, lashes!
.... and you still look fresh-
KAW: How’s the Real Techniques Roadshow going?
KAW: faced.
Nic: It’s going really well. It has been really busy. We’ve been to London, Birmingham and yesterday we flew in here (Glasgow) and then we go to Dublin. So, it’s been really good. In fact, in Birmingham we had soooo many people turn up to meet up, didn’t we? It’s been fantastic.
Nic: It’s a lot of make-up! [Both laughing] And face masks!
Sam: Just on the roadshow this year we’ve been to New York, LA, Chicago, Nashville, Florida ...oh, have I missed anywhere? We’ve been busy!
KAW: What I want to know is how you manage to juggle motherhood while running this empire? Sam: It’s about being organised and also we have an incredible mum who actually works for us. She does our accounts, but she also picks my daughter up from school. You know, because I don’t have the luxury of doing that. Very few mothers do. It’s really hard being a working mum. You might be able to take your
51
kids to school, but to pick them up, you’re only working a half day. So, we’re really lucky that mum is there and just brilliant. Nic: I don’t think we’re any different to any other mums. Every mum goes through that struggle. Every dad goes through that struggle, do you know what I mean? It is really tough and it is more the guilt you feel if you know what I mean, which is the hardest thing, but actually we’re there the same amount as most - it’s just we’re away a lot as well. But when we’re at home, we’re at home and that’s it. It’s not like every weekend we’re there. When we’re there early, we’ll pick the kids up and spend more quality time with them, whereas most people finish work at 5. It is more about just getting over the guilt that every parent feels and thinking you know what? I’m teaching my kids a great work ethic. That’s more important to me that they know, if we want that, we have to go out and work for that. KAW: How many videos have you done now? Sam: On our channel we have 750 and we have about 100 on Real Techniques. Then I think we have another 300-400 on another channel. Then we have all the videos we have made for Glamour and OK! I wouldn’t like to think how many we have done in total. KAW: Do you still have the same zest for it? Sam: You go through stages. I think sometimes, you know, you might get asked A LOT for something that you know is going on trend that you don’t love, say, for example, contouring. You know that video will get a lot of hits, but you can’t quite get on-board with it because it’s just something you don’t love personally. So, there are some videos you’re more passionate about than others. KAW: Do you ever think you’ll run out of ideas? Both: No! Sam: There’s always new stuff and there are so many references. Every season the trends change. The last century there are so many incredible trends that you can always look back at that. There are also so many amazing films.
52
Nic: .... And new products. And that’s the main thing. We may have done a video seven years ago. It might not be as good lighting; we have used products that are now discontinued, so you know, it’s always evolving and always moving on. Sam: The other thing is, as we get older, we appeal to a different audience because all women go through changes in their face, as they get older. I mean, definitely my face has changed an awful lot in the seven years from 30 to 37/38. There have been tonnes of changes in the way I look and I think that’s great, as it means we can age with people. KAW: Do you wear make-up every day? Sam: Honestly, no. But it’s probably because that’s such a big part of our job that it almost feels like you’re working when you put makeup on now. I do like to let my skin breathe, although I very rarely go anywhere without mascara on. That’s the honest truth - I can’t be anywhere without my mascara on. Normally, a bit of concealer too, but everything else? Barely anything. Nic: I take the kids to nursery every morning - I have not a scrape of make-up on and have my hair tied back. Then by the end, when I go pick the kids up again, I’m COVERED in makeup because I’ve done a tutorial [laughing] And, do you know, I feel quite happy doing that. I don’t feel less confident. I used to feel very unconfident without make-up on, but now it doesn’t bother me at all. But I think that’s through the help of people who say “you look lovely without make-up”. It’s hard to get that confidence. What YouTube has taught me is that you don’t need that - that mask to protect you. I’m quite a strong women without that. I don’t need that. KAW: What brushes can you not live without? Sam: I cannot live without this one - base shadow brush - I’m not a big, big eyeshadow wearer; often I just apply it and blend it with that. It’s the perfect size. The other one I couldn’t be without is the setting brush which looks like this but is rounded. It’s great for highlighter or setting under the yes. Nic: Yeah, I have my setting brush in my bag. I have a favourite which is the sculpting brush,
which is quite new. I use it for bronzer and foundation, though. It’s basically the same as the Expert Face Brush except It’s slightly on a tilt, on an angle. I also love the Deluxe Crease Brush, and I have this already. Sam: I think the great thing about these brushes is that they are multi-purpose. You can use them for anything you like. KAW: How important are lashes to your overall make-up look? Sam: Well, I’m obsessed with Lash Growth Serum. The one I use is LiLash and it’s brilliant; it’s made such a huge difference. Before I used LiLash I was quite obsessed with false lashes. But now I don’t really need them so much. KAW: And is that your bedtime routine....? Sam: Yep, and before I put mascara on in the morning. Once at night and once in the morning. It’s created a huge difference. So I love that. As for false eyelashes, we’re both big fans of Arndell .... Nic: ... and Tanya Burr lashes! (Fellow beauty blogger and their sister-in-law) I do love her lashes though. Her individual ones are nice lengths. I wear hers quite a lot. But I do like the Ardell Demi Wispies. KAW: Have you ever had any lash extensions? Sam: No, because it would limit us. Our whole thing is about trying different mascaras and what not, and with lash extensions you’re not supposed to put anything on them. So, for us it wouldn’t be ideal. Nic: I like the idea (of lash extensions), but I’m a real fiddler as well; I’d end up pulling them off! I LOVE the way they look, but they’re just not for us because of our job.

CULT51 NIGHT CREAM £125.00 50MLS A revolutionary 3D, luxury night cream that goes beyond anti-ageing: CULT51. Its potent power works with your skin’s own natural processes of renewal to restore and reveal its most youthful and luminous beauty. The fresh, velvety texture envelope you and the many subtle fragrances soothe your senses, with notes of Gardenia, blended with Muguet to Jasmine, Rose and Patchouli; immediately nourishing the skin. Upon waking, your complexion appears naturally radiant, perfectly plumped and even toned, significantly reducing all the signs of ageing. With every day, wrinkles are filled from within and your skin reveals its newfound youthfulness. I have dry and sensitive skin and often react to products which are labelled ‘suitable for sensitive skin’ and so I was hoping this rich cream would be okay, I was quite surprised that even though it is a night cream it did not feel heavy and it did sink into the skin really quickly and did not leave a residue on the surface of the skin. I also suffer with dark circles under my eyes and have, for years tried every product claiming to reduce them. Lastly I am beginning to develop fine lines around my eyes and mouth, these I detest and therefore spend a fortune and countless products trying to get rid of them. I have used the skincare for two weeks and I can honestly say that I

THE EYELASH DESIGN COMPANY
– INTERNATIONAL COMPANY The Eyelash Design Company is one of the market leading brands of eyelash extensions in the UK. However, it is not just the UK that benefits from their expert, professional services. Lash Perfect is distributed throughout the world through our carefully selected international partners. They currently operate in 32 different countries around the world, and the list is ever expanding.
CHINA
Emma Apps, one of our senior trainers, has recently been working in Shenzhen, China, demonstrating Lash Perfect Express lash extensions and teaching our latest treatment LoLa Brows. May, one of our trainers based in China, also led a hugely attended training session in Hi Brow with many enthusiastic technicians. Our market in China is growing rapidly with LoLa Brows and Hi Brow attracting new interest every day.
The Eyelash Design Company detail in the following article where they have been working this year and what they have been doing worldwide.
FRANCE
Recently, our French distributors, Verthis International, reached out to let us know of an amazing article in Les Nouvelles Esthétiques Spa magazine. The extensive, three-page article covers all the questions and answers you could have when it comes to our eyebrow treatments. Discussing Brow Perfect, LoLa Brows and the combination of the two as “LoLa Brows the Designer Treatment”. “You can suggest eyebrow extensions as part of an anti-aging routine; it rejuvenates…” Interestingly, the article frequently mentions using brow treatments for chemotherapy patients, male clients and as an anti-aging treatment. It is always great to see how well our treatments fit into foreign markets. Brow treatments are universal. 58
Owned by our amazing distributors for the UAE, Sisters Beauty Lounge, the new venue offers award-winning beauty and spa services, and tantalising VIP facilities promising luxurious, efficient and wonderfully inspiring treatments from Dubai’s premier beauty pioneer. With excellent service and sophisticated, cutting-edge technology that brings the latest global trends to Dubai, Sisters Beauty Lounge is proud to provide its iconic brand of tranquil feminine indulgence at their new Dubai Mall flagship location.
SPAIN Brow and lash treatments are extremely popular in China with this being the third trip Emma has made this year; we expect our place in their market to continue to thrive. Emma also visited the exclusive Cosmoprof trade show in Hong Kong; The Eyelash Design Company had a significant presence with an impressively constructed stand.
DUBAI
Another seasoned professional, our international trainer Natalie Piper, will be introducing LoLa Brows to Dubai. During her stay, Natalie will also be attending the opening of Lash Perfect’s brand new training school in the prestigious Dubai Marina.
And finally, a warm welcome to our new distributors ‘The Lab Room’. Based in Spain with a training centre in the vibrant city of Madrid, The Lab Room have been providing Lash Perfect treatments for nearly 10 years. Now it is time for them to use that expertise and background knowledge to educate and support new eyelash and eyebrow technicians in Spain. Good Luck! Look at your business...what message do you think your business is sending to your Ideal Clients? To make it easy focus on one thing at a time; Either your Instagram account or your Facebook Page...Open the feed where all your photos are (on your Facebook Page go into your Photos and open the album not photo-by-photo so you have them all before you)... Write the first 3 things that come to mind when you see all your photos! Don’t overthink this. Only take a couple of minutes to jot down your thoughts. Now think of what you actually WANT your Ideal Client to feel when they find your business. You can take this exercise further and look at the other points outlined on the previous page, and write for each what you have at the moment, and how you want your Clients to feel...
