Our beloved industry saw immediate cancellations, pros suffered an overnight blow to their income, yet, magic still happened. As the entire world was literally burning around us, people still celebrated love. Wedding pros pivoted and found ways to still bring their creativity to light. In spite of the darkness, love and passion shined bright. It would be a full year before we could finally bring our shoot to life but I promise, the wait is worth it (see for yourself on page 7). And sure, I had to scrap the majority of the articles (predicted 2020 trends didn’t exactly go as planned), but the articles that replaced them are going to resonate with the couples planning in this moment. Thanks to the wedding boom and the uncertainty of COVID spikes, planning in 2021 is unlike any planning that’s ever been done, with its own unique challenges … but we are here for you. Our hiring timeline (page 24) will help you navigate when you should be booking your vendors during the boom, our safety packing list will ensure a safe honeymoon (page 74) and our special COVID collection section spotlighting couples who married during the pandemic will give you hope (page 27). Remember, we’re all in this together. Happy planning my friends.

FASHION TIP #1 Use varieties that remain hearty without water and hold up, even through hugs. “Since floral accessories are worn close to the body, your body heat can easily speed up the wilting process,” says Jamie Chang, owner of Mango Muse Events in San Francisco. Florist favorites are ranunculus, carnations, spray roses and greenery, such as succulents and eucalyptus.

14

TIP #2 Keep in mind that many inspiration pictures are from styled shoots. "Shoots capture the flower at its best, and it’s used for inspiration for pros and clients. But many times, these blooms won’t last for the entirety of the wedding,” explains Kimberly Sisti of Sisti & Co. in San Diego.

TIP #3 Take your floral detail shots earlier in the day. Even the strongest flowers are still fragile, so be sure to document them early, while they’re still fresh and beautiful. “Because once the hugs start coming— usually post-ceremony—your floral accessories will start to feel the additional friction, pressure and heat. And of course, there is gravity at work, and your accessories can fall apart toward the end of the day,” says Chang.

Fresh blooms make a sartorial statement as accessory options. Downside? Flowers can be finicky. So we asked floral designers to share tips and tricks for keeping your add-ons extra fresh. TIP #4 Keep the wearer in mind! Whether it’s you, your partner or VIPs, ensure that the floral accessory doesn’t impede the movement, or comfort, of the person rocking it. “Materials needed to secure the florals and greens in place can sometimes be itchy or bumpy, or scratchy on your skin,” notes Chang. “So it’s a good idea to request that your floral accessories also be easily removable if you want to take them off for a little while or only wear them for part of the day.”

TIP #5 Purchase two pieces, just in case. Because wilting is bound to happen, swap out for a fresh substitute after the ceremony for a renewed look. TIP #6 Don’t be afraid to fake it! “If there are some blooms that you would like to incorporate into your design, we can add hints of artificial mixed with fresh. No one usually knows, except for the pros!” says Sisti.

Breaking Bridal Designer Curtis Cassell of Queera Wang is rewriting wedding fashion rules. WRITTEN BY JAMIE VALENTINO

“Are you going to wear a dress or a suit?” was one of the first questions I asked my friend—who is a lesbian—when she recently announced her engagement. She paused to consider this and remains unsure. Unfortunately, we never encountered a designer like Curtis Cassell to explain the wedding industry’s outdated nuances where suggestions are treated as law. Since creating his label Queera Wang, the queer activist fostered a space liberated from the artificial roles of "bride" and "groom."

In a fashion landscape where gender-neutral often means bland enough for both genders, the designer doesn’t strive for subtlety but to simultaneously channel the power of all genders.

“There are definitely traditions I want to stay away from and break,” Cassell says, more like a promise. “The way bridal stands right now is very binary and black-and-white. My parents asked me why I don’t just make the brand Curtis Cassell. But this project is bigger than me. Curtis Cassell wears Goodwill and works at a restaurant. Queera is the matriarch of the queer community and a fashion icon.”

“When people ask what my formalwear looks like, I really feel like I’m creating a new genre. It’s not menswear; it’s not womenswear. I am creating this fantasy to give to people. You can wear this to your wedding. Queer people should be making everyone gag. We should be wearing the best things. That’s why I want to do queer weddings first because we deserve to be serving it. Why is your train not 40-feet long?”

Yet Cassell doesn’t rescind his femininity or masculinity but wields both like a sword and shield.

The designer has achieved national recognition by the media, but he’s learned not to plant the seeds of

16

“I consider myself a transcendentalist in fashion. One of my biggest frustrations is being called a genderneutral designer. That is the opposite of what I’m trying to achieve. I am a gender-empowering designer. I am a gender-revolutionary designer. I am of all genders. I am extremely masculine and extremely feminine. I am blessed with both powers.” So while Cassell enjoys the success of dressing gay icons like Billy Porter, it is the everyday queer person who inspires him to create.

change in a field where crops have only grown pink or blue. “This is the perfect time to reinvent everything. Burn down the patriarchy and let’s question every archaic decision. During Pride Month, the wedding industry is

“ I am a genderempowering designer. I am a genderrevolutionary designer. I am of all genders. I am extremely masculine and extremely feminine. I am blessed with both powers.” Googling ‘queer wedding designers.’ But it feels gimmicky and trendy, and it just fires me up more to use any platform I’m given to talk about real issues. Let’s not talk about actual designs, but let’s talk about how we need to build up our queer community and take down the current status quo. Let’s talk

18

about the wasteful side of fashion. Let’s talk about thrift shopping as the more sustainable form of shopping. Let’s talk about some real shit.” But it would be a fashion injustice to skip his designs. Cassell grew up in a small town in Ohio and left to attend college in Chicago where he studied graphic design and architecture with a concentration in furniture. His garments reveal the “huge history, architecture and old film nerd” he describes himself as. Queera Wang’s current collection was inspired by Romeo and Juliet, including pieces with exaggerated puffed sleeves; blazers sliced at the shoulder and elbow; and a sheer, handbeaded shirt dress with a fishtail train. Cassell whimsically sews together art, activism and wearable fashion. “I’ve been asked, ‘Who is Queera Wang’s bride?’” he laughs. “I am literally a queer fashion designer, and you’re going to ask me that. I didn’t come into fashion because I like fashion. I wouldn’t even consider myself a designer but a queer activist, and fashion is my medium. I

19

am such a romantic that even the darkest and saddest things can still be romantic. But I also just love bringing fantasies to life. Everything to me is very concept-driven but garners a very romantic atmosphere.” Ultimately, the gender-revolutionary creative plans to expand his brand to offer formalwear for the memorable moments of a younger queer generation, such as prom. Queera Wang serves as a reminder that the tides of inclusivity and visibility are only getting stronger. PHOTOGRAPHY: ART DAVISON; MODEL: PATRICK YEBOAH

WEDDING BOOM EDITION By Brittny Drye

After a year’s worth of cancelled and postponed events, weddings have finally been given the green light thanks to vaccines and lifted restrictions, but the go-ahead brings on a whole new challenge of high demand for wedding pros. “We're swamped with past or COVID couples, and then those who are newly engaged,” says Chicago wedding planner Desiree Dent of Dejanae Events. “We are very much overwhelmed in our industry.” Slow response times, limited availability and shortages of goods are affecting the typical planning timeline, so if you’re getting married in the next two years, let our adjusted timeline for when to hire pros be your guide.

12

MONTHS

FLORAL DESIGN: “If you’re

looking for a garden experience or over-the-top glam, you definitely want to consider booking the floral designer early on,” says Dent. “If you're going for more classic, clean, potentially even DIY, then you probably don't have to book this vendor that far out.”

11 MONTHS CATERING: Dent points out that if you’re using an off-site

caterer, you may want to book it even earlier, as soon as you secure your venue, “because many venues have preferred vendors lists, and on those lists, there might only be anywhere from 5–10 caterers that you can select from.”

DRESS: If you’re planning on wearing a dress and going to a

salon to try some on, Dent recommends to at least start thinking about what you want 11 months out. “You can't just walk into a salon anymore and try on wedding gowns. You have to schedule appointments, and they can only take so many per day.”

TAKE NOTE

>>>

Start Here ... AS SOON AS POSSIBLE VENUE, PLANNER, PHOTOGRAPHER, VIDEOGRAPHER: What Dent has dubbed the “big-ticket” vendors, these are the services highest in demand, some booked out as far as 2023. “Book as soon as you can!” she exclaims. “Hire the planner and go right into the venue. Or if you have the venue first, come to us next. From there, I would definitely stamp in— almost immediately—the photographer and videographer.”

• E xpect response times to be extra slow, and have grace—wedding pros are essentially packing multiple wedding seasons into one. • S taff shortages are making an impact, particularly within professions that require many hands on deck, such as floral design and catering. Keep in constant communication with these vendors so that the day-of timeline can be adjusted accordingly. • I f you’re getting married on a holiday weekend, such as Labor Day or Memorial Day, you’ll want to push this timeline up by at least three months.

9 MONTHS STATIONERY: Stationers are being affected by slow shipping and paper supply shortages, so you want to have your stationery secured by the ninemonth mark.

CAKE DESIGN: Dent notes that she hasn’t seen

cake designers be hugely impacted. "I've been able to secure a cake literally a month out,” she says. And unlike many other professions, even the solo artists can take on two or even three weddings a day. “I will say cake tastings do look different now. So if you’re wanting to have that experience of going into the bakery and having the cake flavors presented in individual slices, it’s probably not going to look like that,” Dent continues. “Many of them here [in Chicago] are offering cake-tasting boxes, in which you pick it up at the bakery and then you have that experience at home. And then you can Zoom with the cake designer, or set up a follow-up appointment after that.”

SUIT: If you’re

renting your attire, you can wait to book about three months from your wedding date, but if you’re purchasing a custom suit, look into doing so seven months out.

HAIR/MAKEUP: With

concern for COVID, many hair/ makeup artists closed up shop or are being very strictly limited to how many clients they take on per weekend.

RENTALS: According

to Dent, rentals have not been affected, but she does recommend consolidating as much as possible when sourcing. For example, Dent recalls a situation that happened with a recent client: “We’re using a company for the dance floor and lounge furniture, but when the

working with a company that has many talents within their agency, you can push this by a month or two, but if you’re wanting to book a specific DJ or band, their calendar is going to be getting quickly filled.

6 MONTHS

MONTHS

7

DJ and/or WEDDING BAND : If you’re

caterer called them to get linen, they told her ‘no.’ But when I called, they said yes because they were already contracted to come out.”

5

OFFICIANT: If you’re having a loved one marry you, be sure to review your local state’s required process and work that into the planning timeline. If you are wanting one who has an actual established company, make sure to secure around the five-month mark.

3

MONTHS TRANSPORTATION:

Dent has put out fires due to driver shortages, “and a lot of the times, you don't find out until 24 hours before the wedding.” Have a Plan B in place, just in case.

25

SHARE THE LOVE Discover ways you can use your wedding as an opportunity to give back. COCObundle: This give-back registry allows you to register for actual items: dishes, bedding, cookware … all of the registry classics! But instead of gifting them to the couple, these items are given to youth centers, refugees or people transitioning out of homelessness. So grandma can get you that cookware set you don’t need, and it’s going to someone who does! The Giving Party podcast hosts Kate and John Neal interview wedding pros on their give-back efforts.

Charity Partner: It’s popular to include non-profits as part of your registry, but take it one step further and educate guests on your charity-of-choice. Create a page on your wedding website to share why you picked that particular non-profit, mention it during your ceremony or have a station set up at your reception to share info (in a beautifully branded way, of course!). Hire Vendors Who Give Back: Many wedding pros make donating or partnering with non-profits a part of their company ethos, so don’t be afraid to ask during the interview process what charities their business supports. Impact Party: Incorporate volunteering into your bach party itinerary. Having a destination bach? Bring an extra duffel bag of items to donate to the local community.

Looking for a non-profit to support? CharityNavigator.org evaluates non-profits, rating them on how they spend their funding, actual impact, transparency and more. 26

Donate After “I Do”: Many cities have local services that will take your leftover flowers and repurpose them into arrangements for hospitals and nursing homes. Coordinate with your caterer to send leftovers to a local shelter or food bank (note: there are strict laws when it comes to food donation, so be sure to communicate with your caterer prior!). Wearing a dress? Give it a second life by donating it to a nonprofit that distributes to those of lesser means.

Scan this QR code to view an online directory of repurposing companies!

A COVID Collection Proving that, no matter what life might have thrown this year, love is not cancelled. We went months without seeing loved ones. New normals were born. Lives were lost. But in the midst of it all, love was still present. As friends and family looked on from six feet away or over computer screens, lifelong commitments were made. Weddings may have looked a little different this past year, but they weren’t missing out on love. In fact, because of the climate we were facing, we might have felt it even more.

BRI & LINDSEY APRIL 2020, AUSTIN After having an enthusiastic drive-by arrival, 150 guests sat in their parked cars at a drive-in movie theater, popcorn and Champagne in hand, and watched as Bri and Lindsey exchanged vows on a decorated stage and projected onto the big screen.

SOPHISTICATED CANNABIS EXPERIENCES

WE(ED) DO

The Ultimate Guide to Cannabis Weddings With the legalization expanding around the United States, the trend of cannabis weddings is budding.

WRITTEN BY EMILY ROCHOTTE

WHILE INCORPORATING CANNABIS INTO YOUR WEDDING DAY IS NOT A NEW IDEA, it’s one that grows significantly in popularity each time a state approves recreational cannabis use. Currently, cannabis is recreationally legal and decriminalized in 18 states, plus the District of Columbia. Incorporating cannabis into your wedding looks different to every couple. For some, it’s the infusion

of CBD into cocktails, food, beauty products and so much more. For others, it’s the use of THC in floral arrangements, bud bars and even the wedding ceremony. Dani Geen, CEO of Agris Farms, a cannabis farm in California, celebrated her marriage to Zak Walton in August of 2017 on a beach, sealing their vows with a dab during their ceremony. Their bridesmaids held bud bouquets, and the groomsmen wore bud boutonnieres. Guests enjoyed a hash bar with a

dab set up during the ceremony and were gifted a vape pen, concentrate and a pre-roll. “I wanted to change the stigma about cannabis,” shares Geen. “People always have to run off into their car or go off into the side bushes at weddings, and that’s not okay. You want to be able to enjoy yourself and be able to smoke and not have to worry about hiding from people.” Even hemp is making its way into the wedding world. Hemp is a fiber of the cannabis plant that has 0.3 percent or less of THC and a high CBD

choose to send out invitations that are printed on hemp paper. The rise in cannabis weddings is best seen in the growth of the Cannabis Wedding Expo, created in 2015 by Philip Wolf, founder of Cultivating Spirits. Wolf created the expo after a friend with a cannabis bouquet company was being denied the opportunity to exhibit at traditional wedding shows, with one show even attempting to charge her double for having cannabis. From there, the Cannabis Wedding Expo was born with the first event in January 2016 in Denver and expanding since to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Las Vegas and Toronto, bringing in cannabis professionals of all kinds to help couples plan their wedding. “Look for reputable companies that have business licenses they can show you,” recommends Andrew Mieure, founder of Top Shelf Budtending. “At a minimum, that company should be able to show you some type of business structure paperwork or a proof of good standing in the state that they operate in.” If you want to go the extra mile, look for proof of insurance, though Mieure says this may be tough for companies to send since it’s not often provided. “I would always recommend if you’re looking to throw a cannabis wedding, make sure, at a minimum, you have at least one million dollars in general liability for your budtending staff, just for any mishaps.”

Celebrating a cannabis wedding is a privilege for couples in legalized states since doing so can still leave you locked up in prohibition states. Weddings are an excellent time to educate guests about cannabis, especially when you may have guests traveling from states that have yet to legalize. There is so much more to cannabis than just the high that people associate with it, and consumption has been known to replace pain killers to prevent opiod addiction, ease nausea in cancer patients, reduce feelings of anxiety and much more.

The possibilities for incorporating cannabis into your wedding day are endless, but it will take planning, and there are some challenges you may need to be prepared to face. Cannabis wedding professionals recommend choosing your venue as the first part of planning so you are familiar with each venue’s specific rules. Some venues are cannabisfriendly but not smoke-friendly, which may work for your wedding if you are only planning to serve in edible form, but not if you want to offer vaping. Venues also have guidelines when it comes to liquor licenses and whether cannabis can be served at the same time as alcohol, which can put the venue in jeopardy of losing their license. “Make sure that every single vendor you book knows you’re having cannabis,” encourages Bec Koop, co-owner of Irie Weddings and Events. For example, catering companies will need this information so they know not to send staff that are under the age of 21. Koop also shares the story of every couple’s worst nightmare when a Colorado photographer walked out on a couple’s wedding minutes before their ceremony because he was not comfortable with cannabis and walked in on the groomsmen smoking. You will also want to let all of your guests know that cannabis will be present at your wedding, even if you’re sure they will be on board. Print it on your save-the-dates and publish it on your wedding website. This not only allows guests to make an informed decision about whether or not they feel comfortable attending, but also gives advanced notice for guests with invited children to decide if they want to find a babysitter, as well as for active military guests who are prohibited from using cannabis both recreationally and medically.

CBD vs. THC THC

(Tetrahydrocannabinol): Just one of the hundreds of chemical compounds in a cannabis plant, it’s certainly the most popular due to its psychoactive side effects.

CBD

(Cannabidiol): Now legal on a federal level, the chemical compounds will not leave you feeling high. In fact, CBD has properties that can bring down the effects of a high in someone who has overconsumed THC.

If you are unsure of who will be partaking and therefore how much cannabis to budget for, Koop recommends putting it on your RSVP card, right next to where guests may choose what type of plated meal they want. Add on a few more once you get your count, as you never know who may be canna-curious and decide they are willing to try for the first time at your wedding, knowing they have the comfort of a safe, controlled environment.

MUST- DOS WHEN THROWING A CANNABIS WEDDING

Cannabis couples are not finding as much pushback from their guests as one might often think. When Jordon and Etai Rahmil tied the knot in 2016, the majority of their guests took part in consuming. “We had a cannabis bar with three different strains rolled into joints,” recalls Jordon. “Our guests had access to a private tent with 80 joints handrolled by Etai, along with lighters and a space away from the hustle and bustle of the wedding.”

DO prominently display signage for any edibles or cocktails that contain CBD or THC ingredients.

Cannabis lounges are a growing trend at wedding receptions, allowing budtenders to set up in an area that is not in the middle of the party, especially if you are having guests under the age of 21, but also not in a completely different room. This helps to eliminate the stereotype that smoking is something that needs to be done while hidden.

DO keep edibles low-dosage (we recommend below 10 mg).

DO confirm with all participating pros that you are having a cannabis event.

DO set up a designated area for smoking/vaping. DO hire experienced professionals.

Providing guests with transportation offerings after the wedding is highly recommended, whether you offer shuttle bussing to your hotels or give out rideshare discount codes, to help keep guests safe who may have been consuming THC or alcohol.

With countless ways to incorporate cannabis at your wedding, it can seem impossible to even know where to begin, or how big of a part you want it to play in your day. Whether you just want a small nugget of cannabis tucked away in your boutonniere as an homage to your interest in consumption, or you want to work it into every aspect of your wedding décor, there are countless ways to integrate it into your big day. It’s the perfect time to share cannabis with all your loved ones in a safe, responsible setting.

UNITY CEREMONY Seal your marriage with a

dab. More and more couples are lighting up during their ceremony. Right after Geen and Walton said, “I do,” the newlyweds had their best man and maid of honor light the torch and heat up the rig. They even got their guests in on the unity, with everyone simultaneously lighting up a pre-rolled joint they received when they arrived.

FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS Cannabis can be

included anywhere that flowers are, from centerpieces to bouquets and boutonnières. The best part is you can consume them a few days later! Jamie McCormick, owner of The Flower Daddy, gives clients instructions on how to dry your arrangements so you can smoke the cannabis about five days later, perfect for lighting up on your honeymoon.

BUD TENDING Bud bars allow guests to enjoy

cannabis in a variety of ways based on the couple's

choosing. Budtenders can serve a variety of products ranging from custom-rolled joints and edibles to vaporizers and more. Unlike just passing a bong around among guests, having a professional bud bar staff on hand not only helps walk guests through new flavors and experiences, but also keeps all shared items clean and sanitary.

FAVORS Share the love by giving cannabis-oriented

favors to your guests. Sending everyone home with joints or edibles may not always be the best options, especially if guests are coming in from prohibition states. You can still give great favors with a nod to cannabis, such as customized lighters, CBD products or hemp-based lip balms. If edible favors are more your thing, send guests home with individually packaged cotton candy from Pure Fluff Co., made with foodgrade medicinal hemp oil, or bring them in to spin onsite and treat guests to a sweet late-night snack.

CBD MOCKTAILS CBD can be used to re-create

some of your favorite alcoholic drinks, with CBD oil or CBD tinctures in place of hard liquor. If you are offering a bud bar, mocktails are recommended, as mixing alcohol and cannabis can have detrimental effects. THC remains in the system longer as the liver metabolizes alcohol first, and there can be increased risk for alcohol poisoning and poor judgement. For guests not partaking in cannabis, you may want to offer a signature cocktail or beer and wine to save on the cost of an open bar.

You’ll find when planning your cannabis wedding that professionals are typically not using the term “marijuana.” The word marijuana is known to have negative perceptions attached to it as well as racist roots. In the 1930s, Harry Anslinger, first commissioner of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Narcotics, was the man behind the prohibition of cannabis, citing racial arguments that only minority groups were using marijuana, that jazz musicians were creating “Satanic” music while under the influence, that the word “marihuana” had Spanish roots and that the drug would promote interracial relationships. Prior to that time, cannabis had been the more commonly used term, and is still the medically accepted term today.

HOLD THE ALCOHOL BY BRITTNY DRYE

The latest cocktail trend? Sans booze!

Newlywed Kerry Benson began her alcohol-free journey in June 2020, and what started as a monthlong challenge turned into a lifestyle. “I think I was hesitant to put a label on what I was doing and to make the full commitment to being sober or alcoholfree. I was worried about what people would think, I was worried if I would miss alcohol—namely IPAs and red wine. But what I learned over time is that this is my journey and there is no right answer, except the one that makes me feel my best emotionally and physically. As of right now, that is an alcohol-free lifestyle.”

“We have seen an increased demand for mocktails, low-ABV recipes and more sustainable ingredients over the last few years,” says Parker Boase, owner of Liquid Lab in New York City. “The great thing about mocktails is they encourage inclusivity at events. They are not only great for those who don’t or can’t drink, but are also an exciting option for weddings.” And Benson’s experience backs that up. “Probably the most exciting and unexpected benefit of offering non-alcoholic products at the

THE GREAT THING ABOUT MOCKTAILS IS THEY ENCOURAGE INCLUSIVITY AT EVENTS. THEY ARE NOT ONLY GREAT FOR THOSE WHO DON’T OR CAN’T DRINK, BUT ARE ALSO AN EXCITING OPTION FOR WEDDINGS.”

Whether it’s drinking less or not drinking at all, the last year has caused habits to evolve, ushering in trends of hard seltzers, non-alcoholic beers and zero-proof spirits. Ultimately, as Benson’s wedding approached, the decision to not drink seemed like a no-brainer. “Why would I? I feel better when I don’t drink, I don’t feel like I am missing out, I love my mocktails and nonalcoholic products, and I am certainly not shy about telling people that I don’t drink—anymore.” And with the variety of bar options and as much creativity going into craft mocktails as their cocktail counterparts, it’s easier than ever to offer alcoholfree options, allowing guests to skip the booze but not the party.

wedding was that people who are not alcohol-free tried and liked them. I had so many guests tell me that their minds were completely blown by how good the alcohol-free products are.” So how can you ensure you’re serving a mocktail that’s worth imbibing? Give it the same mixology attention as you would a cocktail, blending fresh ingredients to create a complex flavor—not skimping on the garnish and rimming—and present in glassware that complements the drink. “Ask your venue if you can bring your own alcoholfree products to the wedding. With all the alcoholfree products available these days, you can bring in non-alcoholic versions of your favorite drinks, like alcohol-free beer, champagne and event spirits,” says Diana Licalzi of The Sober Dietitians.

elevating the ENTERTAINMENT

Think beyond the band with specialty acts that bring the “wow” factor. BY BR IT T N Y DRY E

Entertainment is one of the pillars to a memorable party, and while you can never go wrong with a great DJ or band to pack the dance floor, more couples than ever are seeking alternative options, in addition to the reception music. With dance floors being cancelled due to COVID, couples had to think outside the box, and specialty entertainment quickly became a prominent option for socially distanced weddings. Now that we’ve (thankfully) moved to post-pandemic celebrations, couples are having their cake and eating it, too, when it comes to entertaining guests. “In the last few years, the ‘Immersive Entertainment’ division of our company has seen a 400% increase in revenue,” says Darren Olarsch, president of On the Move Entertainment, which has been fueling the New York event industry with top performers for nearly three decades. Wedding planner Michelle Oley of Michelle Elaine Weddings agrees. “I think the pandemic has changed the way couples are going to plan their weddings forever,” notes Oley. “Many couples have been more interested in adding multiple elements of surprises for their guests. They truly care about the guest experience now more than ever, and specialty entertainment changes the game.”

But, Olarsch points out, the DJ and band aren’t going anywhere, “Specialty performances should

never take the place of musical entertainment. They should complement it.” He recommends meticulously weaving in the talent throughout the night, starting with the arrival. “Setting the tone upon arrival to a celebration is one of the most common ways to incorporate specialty performers. Greeters at the entrance are a no-brainer. But we’re more inclined to advise our clients to layer in talent, in sporadic, unexpected ways, throughout the night, to keep guests pleasantly surprised. It’s a great way to keep infusing energy into a celebration.” Popular talents include themed greeters, fire dancers for beach celebrations, photo booth experiences, living statues, live event painters (“which are making a comeback!” exclaims Oley), musical enhancements and even acts such as magicians. To keep it from feeling forced, timing is key. “You don’t want any part of your wedding day to feel off; it should flow seamlessly from one thing to the next,” says Oley, who recently had a maid of honor hire a gospel choir as a surprise at the end of her speech. “We made sure she was speaking last so it would get everyone not only surprised, but it truly kicked off dancing for the rest of the evening. Had the choir came in too early into the dinner, it would have been potentially awkward.” Oley recommends viewing the day as a whole—and all of the potential scenarios—before deciding when to schedule a performance, and day-of make sure someone (not you!) is keeping tabs on their arrival and setup. “The last thing you want to worry about is them showing up late or too early and throwing off the flow,” Oley adds. Whether you’re adding a short side act to entertain guests at cocktail hour or creating an entire production mid-reception, specialty acts are guaranteed to bring energy to the party. “I think we’re really going to see so much more entertainment used than we’ve ever seen before,” says Oley. “Couples want to make their wedding more than just ‘dinner and dancing.’ They want their guests to have a full experience from beginning to end with memorable moments throughout, and I’m here for it!"

SLEEP TIPS

Nail expert and salon owner Tee Hundley gives us the 101 on manicure options. BASIC WHAT IT CONSISTS OF: Your basic manicure includes shaping, buffing and polishing. PROS: With hundreds of colors to choose from, either in-store for DIY or at a salon, basic is great if you have a very specific hue in mind. You can also remove it yourself at home with polish remover from any drugstore. CONS: It takes time to dry and can easily chip. GREAT FOR: If you’d like to change your color quickly from wedding to honeymoon. PRO TIP: Have a bottle of quickdrying top coat at home and re-top coat your nails every two days to extend and protect your manicure.

ACRYLIC WHAT IT CONSISTS OF: Acrylic nails are a liquid-and-powder combo that self-cure to create a strong barrier on the nail. PROS: They allow you to extend the nail length, particularly useful if you have shorter natural nails. CONS: Acrylics have a heavy scent when being applied, so be prepared to sit through up to two hours of chemical fumes during application. Additionally, you must have acrylic nails professionally removed. GREAT FOR: If you want a luxurious-looking set for your wedding or want nail art that will last, acrylic is a great option. PRO TIP: Be sure to consider your lifestyle when deciding on the length of your nails. Long and blingy nails look fun and beautiful, but may be a hindrance after the wedding day!

GEL WHAT IT CONSISTS OF: A gel polish manicure is finished with a polish that cures in a UV light, so no extended dry time is needed. PROS: Gel manis have quick dry time and are strengthening and long-lasting (up to 14 days!). CONS: Gel polish has to be soaked off, which takes time and is very drying on nails. GREAT FOR: You can get your manicure a few days before the wedding and still have it last through your honeymoon. “If you're like me and love the pool and ocean, you'll definitely want to have a gel polish for your honeymoon,” says Hundley. “This way, you won't worry about chipping or discoloration.” PRO TIP: While wearing gel polish, be sure to apply cuticle oil on your nails a few times per day to avoid drying.

48

LONGWEAR WHAT IT CONSISTS OF: Think of longwear polishes as a hybrid between gel and basic— they do not require UV light, yet still dry quickly, last 7–14 days and do not need to be soaked off. PROS: These polishes come in a variety of colors and can also easily be purchased and applied at home. CONS: The downside of a longwear polish is that since it is not cured, depending on how adventurous your honeymoon is, you may see slight discoloration or chipping early on. GREAT FOR: They are great options for a wedding or honeymoon for their ability to be changed or touched up at home or on-the-go. PRO TIP: Since the colors dry fast, have a longwear polish with you for quick reapplication or touch-ups!

DIP POWDER WHAT IT CONSISTS OF: An alternative to the acrylic mani, the very popular “dip" is a fine acrylic powder applied with a resin glue instead of a liquid monomer. PROS: All of the benefits of the classic acrylic set without the harsh scent. CONS: A little less strength than what you get with acrylic. GREAT FOR: Dip powder manis are great for an option to wear from wedding through your honeymoon. PRO TIP: Dip manicures are an alternative to acrylic, NOT gel polish.

APRES NAILS WHAT IT CONSISTS OF: Apres nails are becoming very popular because they cut down on the sculpting time of acrylic and hard gels. Apres nails are a full nail created from soft gel that is applied to the nail bed and cured to adhere. PROS: You can have a full set of beautiful nails of any length and shape fairly quickly. If applied professionally, you can have a one-color set done in an hour or use the extra time to get some fun nail art! CONS: These nails also have to be professionally removed and everyone isn't a perfect candidate. GREAT FOR: If you merely want to add length for the special occasion, as it is simply a full gel extension that is less damaging upon removal. PRO TIP: “If your honeymoon includes anything that has you and the Earth ‘as one,’ I would skip them in fear of losing a nail,” notes Hundley.

PRESS ONS WHAT IT CONSISTS OF: Since the pandemic hit, the press-on nail industry has boomed and the options today are a far cry from the press-ons of the past. PROS: They come in a variety of colors, shapes and lengths. They also come with basic to extraordinary nail art. CONS: If you lose one or two, you have to replace the entire set. Have a back-up set, just in case. GREAT FOR: “Press-ons are perfect if you're just looking to have something pretty for your wedding and will remove after, or if you are going to pull a Beyoncé and do outfit and nail changes throughout your big day!” says Hundley. PRO TIP: Do not glue press-ons onto your natural nails, as you will ruin your nails if you try to pull them off.

ADDING NAIL ART TO YOUR MANI? According to Hundley, your nail art style will determine what manicure suits you best. “A simple flower or stripe is fine for basic,” she says. “If you want something more time-consuming, like a colored French, you’ll want to go with gel polish. “Or if your look is going to include accents, such as foil, lace or bling, you should go straight to an acrylic or gel set.”

REST EASY By Brittny Drye

COUNT DOWN TO CALM DOWN Creating a bedtime routine is crucial for training your body to calm down, so start a regular routine a few months before the big day, whether it’s a warm bath, yoga or calming music— whatever works for you. Refrain from caffeine after 2 p.m., and eat dinner 2-3 hours before bed to allow for proper digestion. If you exercise in the evenings, be sure to give yourself plenty of cool-down time. A hard workout

52

before bed can actually do the exact opposite of tiring you out. “The heavier the workout—and especially, the higher the heart rate becomes—the more likely you will suffer from sleep disruption,” says Carolyn Burke, sleep coach and editor of SleepAdvisor.org. “We want to calm the nerves and lower the heart rate, so gentle stretches, a light jog, or gentle yoga can all be beneficial.” Keep the bed free of activity, even reading. “Reading in bed is not always such a good idea, as that trains your body to see your bed as a place for activity. We really recommend using the bed

for nothing but sleep and sex.” If you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, refrain from looking at your phone. “The blue light from the device can disrupt your cycle,” says Burke, as well as spike any todo list concerns. Instead, if you find yourself unable to fall back to sleep, getting up and doing something such as light cleaning or reading can help relax you enough to get back to bed. “Remaining in bed for too long may be detrimental. We don’t want to train our bodies to see being awake in bed as routine.”

Estate Expectations Jon and Patrick’s elegant fall wedding in Connecticut boasted timeless details and infused traditions. Written by Brittny Drye Photography by Anaise Prince Photography

56

Unraveling like a great novel, Jon and Patrick’s love story led them to exchanging vows on the stone steps of Gallaher Mansion, a Tudor Revival-style manor nestled in Connecticut’s Cranbury Park. CEREMONY Donning matching green custom suits, the polished grooms incorporated nods to their cultural heritages: their older brothers performing a Yugal ceremony and their best friends presenting arras, two traditional elements from Filipino weddings. An applicable excerpt from a now-archived letter written by Harvard professor F.O. Mattiessen to his partner Russell Cheney in 1924 was read aloud: Marriage is a mere term; only as a dynamic vivid thing does it dominate life. That is: You can visualize marriage or you can live it. Now I am living it. TOP LEFT

“The letter demonstrates how far we have come in the last 95 years, and how our society has chosen to embrace the love shared by two men,” says Patrick. RECEPTION Classic crisp white dahlias and roses blended beautifully with lush eucalyptus in milk-glass vessels that lined the tables underneath the twinkly lightcapped tent. “We wanted to add floral elements that felt natural for our space, and the décor to reflect our goal for the night—create a fun, love-filled memory with all of our favorite people,” says Patrick. The grooms designed and built the fabric signage themselves, which directed guests to their seats where they indulged in seasonal fare. As dinner winded down, Jon and Patrick cut into their croquembouche, a traditional French wedding cake. “Jon and I love a French pastry shop in Connecticut, Hen and Heifer.

Vintage coins from Patrick’s family were used for the arras presentation, a tradition that symbolizes prosperity. The gift table was Patrick’s grandmother’s, and the Simon Pearce glass vase was inscribed with the grooms’ wedding invitation, a gift from Patrick’s parents.

Whang Suh—the owner and chef—makes the most amazing cream puffs and suggested we go with a croquembouche.” As dancing started to rev up, the newlyweds swapped their suits for customized jean jackets with “Groom” embroidered on the back, accompanied by patches found at a local shop. “The most emotional moment happened when our secondto-last song started to play! We couldn’t believe the night was almost over when [the DJ] played Noah Reid’s version of ‘Simply the Best,’” says Patrick. “We love the television show Schitt’s Creek and Noah’s version of the song is perfect for a final slow dance. The night officially ended with Ke$ha’s ‘Die Young’—full of energy, jumping and tears: Let's make the most of the night like we're gonna die young.”

The grooms were inspired by the setting for their design. “Our theme focused on greenery, nature and the simplicity of our elegant venue.” BOTTOM The wooden arbor was made by a friend and doubled as a photobooth backdrop for the reception.

A CITRUS-HUED SPRING SOIRÉE North Carolina couple Katie and Fernando’s formula for focusing on food, flowers and fun proved to be a recipe for success. Written by Emily Rochotte Photography by John Branch IV Photography

60

Katie and Fernando danced into each other’s world at an underground club in Raleigh, North Carolina, when their eyes met across the floor, romcom-style. Fernando made his way through the crowd toward Katie, impressing her with his moves. Not only did Katie go home and find Fernando on Facebook using just his first name, she was pleased to discover they had 34 mutual friends. A friend request turned into forever when Fernando proposed with Katie’s dream ring during an at-home dinner of enchiladas. Food, flowers and fun were the three areas Fernando and Katie wanted to focus on as they planned their celebration. The couple jokingly told their friends and vendors that the unofficial theme was “Bo-Deco,” a mix of boho and Art Deco. The couple’s choice of venue brought their relationship full circle when they selected the Cannon Room, located on the top floor of the building where they met dancing in the basement club. CEREMONY “Our ceremony was a mix of traditional and non-traditional,” shares Katie. “We tried to incorporate elements we both wanted and left out anything that didn’t feel like us. Our ceremony was not faith-based, just grounded in love.” Dressed in a handsome blue suit from Express, the groom’s energetic entrance set the tone for a fun celebration. MIDDLE One of the couple’s most memorable moments was the officiant’s intro. “His words were so meaningful and made us feel so special, supported and loved.” BOTTOM LEFT A white tabletop design allowed for the flowers to pop. BOTTOM RIGHT The ceremony/sweetheart table arch was handmade by the bride’s sister-in-law.

coral, pink, orange, green, purple and yellow flowers, which popped against the neutral look of the space as natural light streamed through the windows. Wedding party dresses in shades of coral coordinated with the vibrant bouquets and boutonnières. Standing under an arch handmade by Katie’s sister, the bride and groom participated in the Celtic ritual of handfasting, using various aspects of ceremonies they liked and fastening their hands with ribbons made from the wedding dresses worn by Katie’s mother and sister. They also wrote their own vows, Fernando sharing his in poem form. RECEPTION Reception tables were adorned with floral centerpieces filled with tulips and poppies, two of Fernando’s favorites, as well as butterfly ranunculus, a favorite of Katie’s. The arrangements were surrounded by salmon-colored taper candles and set on shimmering white tablecloths. The newlyweds’ sweetheart table was accented with crystal candelabras that belonged to

Katie’s mother. THE FOOD With food being a major focus of the wedding for Katie and Fernando, they dedicated the majority of their budget to catering, serving familystyle contemporary farm-to-table Southern cuisine. Guests enjoyed signature cocktails, a tequilaand-hibiscus drink named for the bride, and a whiskey, ginger and mint concoction for the groom. A grapefruit and honey IPA called Pop’s Breakfast made by the groom and his friends (lovingly named after Fernando’s dad’s favorite breakfast) was served on draft. The cake, which Fernando described as “dope-tactically delicious,” was no exception to the floral décor of the day. The twotiered classic dark chocolate cake, made by Katie’s sister, was covered with vanilla buttercream icing mixed with a hint of a raspberry and covered with fresh flowers in shades of orange and purple. THE PARTY For a couple who met on the dance floor, having guests up and partying was a must. After

Fernando and his mother shared a salsa dance, a nod to Fernando’s Panamanian roots, the DJ went right into “Suavemente” by Elvis Crespo to get the party started. Every single guest hit the floor, and by the second song, a conga line was already in formation. “I’d never seen a dance floor that immediately packed!” remarks Katie. Inspired by Adventure & Intention Meg and Abby cleverly infused details that represented their identities and values throughout their San Diego wedding. Written by Emily Rochotte Photography by Sweet Paper Media

64

In order to bring their travel-themed wedding vision to life, Meg and Abby landed on San Diego’s Japanese Friendship Garden, located in historic Balboa Park. “We selected [the Japanese Friendship Garden] not only because it’s one of the most beautiful spaces in the city, but also because it was important to us to support a non-profit organization rather than a venue that exists solely to boost the wedding industry.” This selection was the first of many that put the couple’s core values into action for a day filled with intentional choices. CEREMONY The couple kicked off what would become a night of dancing with a dance down the aisle as their procession. “Being queer and not subscribing to many traditions in TOP LEFT

our everyday lives, it was important that our wedding day followed suit,” expressed Abby and Meg. The couple designed their own wedding ceremony, which was officiated by a close friend, taking a moment at the beginning to recite Mouthful of Forevers written by queer poet Clementine von Radics, taking a moment to acknowledge their community. “Being queer, our chosen family is extremely important to us, and it was a pretty emotional moment to look out and see our community rallying around and smiling back at us.” RECEPTION Minimalist greenery runners lined farmhouse tables that were set with vintage stoneware and colorful mismatched goblets. With their wedding falling during Pride month, Abby and Meg used the time at the beginning of their reception to skip the traditional toasts and instead deliver a queer history lesson, highlighting the significance of getting married during an anniversary month of the Stonewall riots.

Camp mugs featuring custom logos that stated “Stray Together” fit nicely into the travel theme. Rainbow socks and bright paisley ties added pops of color to their neutral suits.

TOP RIGHT

65

Their love of travel was welldocumented in the details: vintage suitcases and globes sprinkled throughout, table numbers representing countries, and old postcards for guests to write wished adventures and drop into an antique mailbox. Guests sipped from camp mugs designed with a custom logo that doubled as favors, a sustainably chic choice. “Both of us feel pretty strongly about environmental issues, and the bar was supposed to have disposable cups, so having the camp mugs was our way of reducing the environmental impact.” The newlyweds were all for nixing traditions, including the cake cutting ceremony. In fact, Meg and Abby skipped having a cake altogether and offered a dessert bar spread with donuts,

churros, chocolate covered strawberries and many other delicacies. “Because having a vibrant celebration was our main priority for the day, this was a better option so we didn’t have to halt the flow with a cake cutting, and guests could set their own pace and stay out on the dance floor as long as they wanted,” Abby and Meg explained. And dance they did. Meg and Abby hired rockabilly band Tommy Price & The Stilettos to perform at the reception. The couple had seen the group perform at a local speakeasy shortly after getting engaged and wanted to share the band’s energetic presence with their guests

throughout the night. of our favorite people,” says Patrick.

The southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos is one-half party zone (Cabo San Lucas) and one-half artisanal elegance (San José del Cabo), so you’re sure to find activities that fit your vibe.

los cabos

2PM Time for lunch! At SUR Beach Club, dine table service or order right from your beach chair as DJs spin daily at this chic yet casual beachfront retreat. surcabo.com 4PM Visit Flora Farms, a 25-acre working farm with a multitude of activities to choose from: watercolor workshops (Wednesdays and Fridays), nature-based spa treatments or browse their on-property Shoppes and Grocery. Menus are tailored to your tastes, so choose whatever your heart desires. Enjoy a nightcap on the beach by a roaring fire to round out the evening.

DAY THREE

7AM Light breakfast bites on property before a relaxing beachfront yoga session at Blue Desert Cabo. (Option: sleep in!) 10AM Cooking class at Los Tamarindos, a culinary venue (also great for weddings!) with an expansive farm property only five minutes from downtown San José del Cabo. This is the perfect opportunity to buy a local artisanal gift to take home to a loved one (or yourself). oscabosguide.com/art-district-san-jose

6PM Happy hour at Baja Brewing Company. Take a brewery tour (pint in hand) and learn how they make their highly acclaimed cervezas. bajabrewingcompany.com

8PM Dinner at Casa Don Rodrigo. Unassuming until you step inside, this was the original house of Don Rodrigo Aragon, the first mayor of the town. Head to the garden out back for a truly enchanting experience (10/10 recommend the house special: fettuccine served tableside). casadonrodrigo.com

^^^ Latitudes offers one of the most romantic settings in all of the Keys.

While Key West may win the popularity contest, we recommend Key-hopping to get the most out of your honeymoon experience.

DAY ONE 3PM Arrive at check-in to Amara Cay Resort, a luxury resort at the top of the Keys in Islamorada, with incredible views. amaracayresort.com 5PM Painting the Keys session at Florida Brewing Co. Try your hand at painting a Floridian landscape while sipping on brews infused with local flavors, such as Key limes, citrus and local honey. floridakeysbrewingco.com 8PM Dinner at Azur, where innovative Mediterranean specialties make it difficult to choose which entrée to order. Luckily, you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. azurkeywest.com

DAY TWO 9AM Islamorada is known as the sport-fishing capital of the world, so flex your angler muscles with a morning fishing charter. Bonus: They have a restaurant onproperty that will cook your catch! robbies.com

2PM Late lunch at Robbie’s Marina. Didn’t catch a fish? No worries, their menu is filled with low-key favorites. Be sure to browse their kitschy open-air market afterward. 5PM Relax with craft beer and cocktail tastings at Islamorada Brewery & Distillery (tip: their Sandbar Sunday ale is the perfect boat beer!). islamoradabreweryanddistillery.com

10AM Explore the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum (cash-only admission), a historic property lorded over by 55 cats, all descendants from Hemingway’s cat, Snow White (and yes, about half of them have the famous sixth toe). hemingwayhome.com 12PM Lunch at Blue Heaven—go for the brunch menu if you’re there on a Sunday. This quirky backyard-style restaurant offers live music and meringue-topped Key lime pies (a sign of a “true” Key lime pie, though very hard to pull off in Florida heat, so it’s rarely on the menu). Don’t miss the rooster graveyard in the back! blueheavenkw.com

2PM Stroll through the glass-enclosed habitat at the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, filled with lush greenery and hundreds of colorful butterflies and birds fluttering around you. keywestbutterfly.com 4PM A little afternoon delight: ice cream! Head to Flamingo Crossing for a scoop (or two) before going back to the hotel to freshen up for dinner. facebook.com/flamingocrossing.keywest 7PM For perhaps the most romantic dinner you’ll find in the Keys, you must take a ferry to the exclusive 27-acre island, Sunset Key, just 500 yards off Key West. Latitudes is a fine-dining, open-air restaurant with reservationonly seating, so be sure to plan in advance. For peak romance, time it just right for sunset, so you can take in the views in transit or while you’re dining waterfront. sunsetkeycottages.com/key-west-restaurants/latitudes

DAY FOUR 9AM Leisurely wake up and enjoy Alexander’s Guesthouse’s breakfast spread (poolside!) of fresh juices, homemade muffins and, depending on the day, a main course of egg casserole, French toast or quiche. 11AM Explore the city’s history through food (is there a better way?) on the Southernmost Food Tasting & Cultural Tour with Key West Food Tours. This three-hour walking tour will introduce you to hidden gems and authentic island flavors. keywestfoodtours.com 3PM See the city from the water while receiving an adrenaline rush on one of Fury Cat’s guided Jet Ski tours. You may even spot dolphins and sea turtles along the way! furycat.com 7PM Dinner and a show at LaTeDa, a venue that screams Old-World Key West. After your meal, head into the cabaret room for a riveting drag performance by one of their resident artists, Randy Roberts or Christopher Peterson, both masters of impersonations and impeccable comic timing. lateda.com 9PM Head for a night out to the “Pink Triangle” portion of famous Duval Street, a cluster of LGBTQ+ bars and entertainment clubs around the 700 block of Duval.
