HIP-HIP HOORAY!

it’s time to party

A Rainbow Love themed party being enjoyed by happy kiddos at CheekyChinos

PARTY FEATURE SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW

M

um of two and businesswoman, Pam Moorhouse knows that planning and hosting your little one’s birthday should be a fun-filled & lovely affair, but for many parents it’s just one big stress! From finding the party stationery and decor, to making the cake, to doing the big clean up (before and after), to trying to keep lots of kids entertained for a few hours... it can all get a bit much. Pam opened her great kid-friendly café, CheekyChinos, where parents can relax while their kids have fun in a supervised play area in 2012. She says she received repeated requests to open for parties. “From my own experiences with two small children, I know how hard it is to plan a beautiful children’s birthday party while still catering for your adult friends and family. I looked at what was happening both in Australia and overseas and created what I think is the perfect recipe for a fun and stress-free party” Pam says that her recipe is “to take a fabulous kid-friendly space, add to that delicious food, great coffee, and organise everything from the party stationery to the birthday cake, so all the parents need to do is turn up on the day, have fun and celebrate their little one’s birthday.”

Pam Moorh ouse

" From my own experiences with two small children, I know how hard it is to plan a beautiful children's birthday party while still catering for your adult friends and family." From Rainbows to Pirates, Forest Friends to Construction, there are 7 different Love JK themes to choose from. The party themes are completed by matching sweet treats and birthday cake, made by the talented ladies at Burnt Butter. Pam says “From cake pops to cupcakes, to the all important birthday cake, it is all so pretty to look at and of course, utterly yummy!” Each party offers at least two hours of supervised play for children five and under, while the ‘grown ups’ can enjoy a delicious selection of food and drink. CheekyChinos is located near South Melbourne Market at 145 Cecil Street South Melbourne and is open 9am-3pm Monday to Friday and 8.30-2pm Saturday and Sunday. cheekychinos.com.au

Chocolate Freckles

Nicole Avery of Planning With Kids shares with us her easy recipe for Chocolate Freckles Makes 18 large freckles

What you need 500 grams of chocolate 100 grams of 100s and 1000s 18 large patty pans

How to On a tray set out the patty pans. Pour a decent amount of sprinkles into a small container and have a teaspoon ready. Break chocolate into small pieces in a microwave safe bowl. Heat on high for 1 1/2 minutes. Stir chocolate. Heat on high again for another 30 seconds. At this point the chocolate may be ready depending on the power of your microwave. If it isn’t, heat again for 15 second intervals until the chocolate is completely melted. Spoon out melted chocolate into patty pans. Use enough mixture so the bottom is covered and the freckle will be about 4mm thick (you could go thicker if you like). Once you have used up all the mixture, sprinkle 100s and 100s on top of the chocolate in each pan. I made the choice to go a little heavy with the sprinkles to make sure that they were well covered. Any excess falls off when you take them out of the pans. Place the tray in refrigerator for the freckles to set. Once they have set (30 – 60 minutes) take them out of the fridge. Peel back the patty pans and remove the freckle. I recommend doing this over the kitchen sink because if you have excess 100s and 1000s, they go everywhere! Arrange on plate, then enjoy!

Hmmm.... no m, nom, nom !!

" I like to melt chocolate in the microwave, so the instructions relate to how to do that. You could melt the chocolate any way you like. Once the chocolate is melted you need to work relatively quickly before it begins to reset, so it is best to have everything else organised first."

Red Velvet Cake Pops Makes approx 30

Our friends at Sunbeam have shared with us an easy recipe to make scrumptious Red Velvet Cake Pops. All you need are some everyday baking ingredients, lolly pop sticks and the Sunbeam Cake Pop Maker. Get your kiddos in the kitchen and get your bake on!!

What you need Cake Pops

To Decorate

3/4 cup self raising flour

Plastic lollypop sticks

1/4 cup plain flour

300g white chocolate melts

1/2 cup caster sugar

Glace cherries

75g butter, room temperature

1 egg white

1/3 cup milk

1 1/2 cups icing sugar

1 egg

Red food colouring in gel or paste form

1 tsp vanilla essence

See note below

5-6 drops red food colouring

How to

Sunbeam Cake Pop Maker $34.95, sunbeam.com.au

Place all cake pop ingredients into a large bowl and beat using an electric mixer for 1-2 minutes until well combined. Pre-heat the Cake Pop Maker. Lightly grease and spoon 1 tablespoon of batter into each hole. Close lid and cook for 4 minutes. Place on a wire rack to cool and repeat with remaining mixture. Melt the white chocolate in a bowl, following the packet instructions. Dip one end of each lollypop stick into a little melted chocolate then insert into cake pops. Refrigerate for 5 minutes to set. Dip the cake pops, one at a time into the melted chocolate; hold over the bowl allowing excess chocolate to drip away. Decorate some with a glace cherry then stand all cake pops into a glass (or piece of foam) and allow to set at room temperature. To decorate the remaining cake pops, sift the icing sugar into a bowl. Lightly whisk the egg white in a separate bowl, to loosen. Add the sifted icing sugar a little at a time, stirring until smooth. Add food colouring and mix until combined. Spoon a small amount of the red royal icing on the top of the set chocolate cake pops, allowing it to drip down the sides or drizzle over. Yummmmy!!!!

A little note...

It is important not to use the liquid red food colouring, as this will make you icing too runny. Paste or gel food colours are available from cake decorating stores

Picking up colours in the Love JKprint, this design is a beautiful soft colour scheme with a tiny pop of orange. Keeping the wallpaper the feature, you only need a few stylish accessories to create a modern, playful and classic style that will age well as your little one grows. Whilst I designed this room with a baby boy in mind, I adore using blue in girls rooms and think this would easily translate into a little girls nursery as well.

Ahoy there! Mum of two, Mandy celebrated her youngest son's first birthday in Arrrr-mazing style in Sorrento. Mandy shares with us how she turned her gorgeous home into a pirate's paradise, complete with a treasure hunt and hand made loot bags!

CUSTOMER PARTY FEATURE AHOY THERE!

O

n a mild December day, in the gorgeous beachside town of Sorrento proud parents, Mandy and Derren threw an Arrr-mazing Pirate birthday bash for their second child, Archie.

Mandy explains, “Archie is our last baby so we wanted to do something special and fun for all the kiddies we know... after all, it’s a pretty big milestone to get to the first birthday (for the parents anyway!).”

“ My favourite touch was the photo booth. The little pirates posed with props in front of a red and white stripe backdrop for a pic!“ See Page 28 for your own photobooth props!

The guests were greeted by a big red ‘X’ marks the spot on the letterbox and gold jewels hanging from the trees. The kids received a handmade calico draw string bounty bag with a red felt ‘x’ on it. Inside they found a telescope, eye patch, jewel necklace, pirate stamps and a treasure map. The instruction being to hold on to their bounty bag for the games to follow. which included a treasure chest piñata and, of course, a treasure hunt. Mandy says “By the end of the day, their bags were overflowing with goodies!” Mandy had plenty of expert help on hand to make this brilliant day happen. She says “I was the luckiest girl in the world when it came to help. My mum and her best friend, Linda, were like my kitchen angels. Mum made so much food - mini schnitzels, salads, cheese cake and the all important birthday cake (thanks to the Women’s Weekly Cake Book from my childhood!) I made plenty of cupcakes topped with fondant pirate faces and Love JK party circles. My favourite were the Pirate Mallow-men! They were so easy to make - yet looked super cute!” See page 29 for Mandy’s super simple recipe.

CUSTOMER FEATURE AHOY THERE!

The treasure chest piñata takes a hit from a strong Pirate!

Arrrrr! Treasure! The pirates are gathered around their loot.

T

he yard was decorated with gold jewel beads, netting and home-made gold coin garlands. A massive white sail towered over the lolly buffet with gorgeous birthday bunting attached. The kids had plenty of pirate props to keep them entertained – like hats, bandannas, swords and tattoos. Mandy says “My favourite touch was the photo booth. The little pirates posed with props in front of a red and white stripe back drop for a pic! The best part was the ‘pirate speak’ speech bubbles they held. Very cute me matey!” See page 28 for your free photo booth props!

MANDY’S PARTY TIP! “ Get organised early! Having had 2 little boys at my feet, I had to plan everything a good month in advance. I kept lists of everything required and stayed on top of it with my work in progress spreadsheet. The project manager in me certainly reared it’s ugly head!”

Mandy says that the biggest challenge was the mast for the sail. “I had barely ever held a hammer before, let alone a drill. I bought some cheap wood and broom sticks from the hardware and draped one of mum’s old table cloths over it. Looked great... Until it fell about 100 times! My husband isn’t really the ‘handy man’ type so securing into the ground didn’t really work.” Being a busy Mum of two rambunctious and adorable little boys, she spent her time scouring the web for her party wares. She sourced her party stationery from Love JK and found Ebay to be a great source for her party ware, like the piñata. Mandy says “It was such a busy, fun day. We had a blast! After the delicious barbecue lunch, there were parents practically chasing their sugar drunk kids down the street in an attempt to lure them into the car.” www.lovejk.com.au
