LITTLE CHEFS The perfect party for kids who are crazy about cooking! TEXT JODIE TURNER STYLING THE PARTY PARLOUR
On the Menu Popcorn Pizza & Garlic Bread Choc Dipped Bananas
If your child is crazy about cooking, fanatic about food and wants to become the next Junior Masterchef then this is the perfect party theme for their next birthday. It suits both boys and girls, the cooking becomes the “party entertainment” and it is the perfect indoor party as it can go ahead rain or shine!
Mum of three, expert organiser & co-owner Once this was done we moved onto making of The Party Parlour, Jodie Turner shares Pizzas. I had a selection of ingredients that I organised individually for each child using a paper with us a great Little Chefs Party. I timed this party to start at 11am and to finish at 2.30pm and the first activity was to get dressed in aprons and hats and wash hands in preparation for cooking. I had laid a prep table which had everything they would need set out for each child.
plate and baking cups (prior to the party). The kids chopped up what they wanted (allowing them to select what they use usually means they will actually eat the end result) and we encouraged them to create a “picture” on their pizza base.
This included preparation plates, pizza boxes,

Their first activity was to make Popcorn. This gave them a snack to munch on while they were cooking. We then moved onto making Garlic Bread. They each had a pre-cut bread roll, foil wrap and a baking cup with soft butter in it. I gave them parsley to chop up and garlic to add.
organised a plate for each child with bananas, stick, melted chocolate and decorations. Then it was onto Cupcakes. I had pre-baked the cupcakes and the kids were just decorating and packaging them so they could take them home to show Mum and Dad what they had made. All up, the cooking took about 1 1/2 hours so by now the kids were ready to eat.

The Cooking I decorated party tables using the same colours and designs as on the cooking table but made it look more like a restaurant. I had individual place settings for the children (an egg whisk with a name label on it). In the same area I set up a lolly table where the kids could make up their own take home lolly bags. This added a lots of decoration to the area and made it really special. While all this was going on we had a chance to clean up the cooking table leaving the kids names at each setting. We then placed the kids decorated cupcakes at their place setting so everything was ready to take home.
Happy Birthday And Home Once the eating was done, we sang Happy Birthday and the kids had cake, ice cream and their choc bananas for desert. They then filled their lolly bags from the lolly table and placed them with their cupcakes. As everything was labeled with their name it made it really easy when it was time for them to leave. www.lovejk.com.au

EXPERT
PARTYtips
The Party Parlour’s Jodie Turner shares with us her expert tips on how to plan and host a cooking party...without it turning into a food fight!
Planning The Party Consider the number of little chefs you have for this type of party. Between 6 – 12 is manageable. If you have more simplify the preparation and cooking as much as possible. Plan for a cooking table and an party table if possible. That way guests can move from a “messy” table to clean party table to eat. To avoid the need to buy costly chopping boards, buy extra paper plates for guests to cut and prepare ingredients on. Ask a friend or two if they can help you on the day so it gives you time to help supervise the cooking.
Before The Party If time allows shop for non-perishables as early as you can and just leave the last minute shopping for the fresh ingredients. Buy pizza bases in a size that allows you to get all of them in the oven at once so everyone’s pizza is ready at the same time. If this is impossible, consider making “pizza muffins” instead which can be cooked quickly under a grill. The Lolly Table can be set up ahead of time (even if Extra plates and baking cups
you can’t put the lollies in the jars because someone

might eat them!). This can provide a good focal point for

decorations. Hanging them can take a little time so doing it early avoids last minute panic. Bake your cupcakes the day before and have the kids just decorate them on the day. Make sure your camera is charged and accessible.
The Day of the Party Prepare as many ingredients for the pizzas in individual serving cups for each guest (one onion, vegetable, meat, cheese). The baking cups are a great way to do this. They not only help with organisation, but they mean that lots of hands are not going into big plates of ingredients (germs!). No washing up after, just throw them away. Use different colours and patterns to fit in with your party table design. Prepare small tubs of coloured icing (baking cups are great for this too). Prepare popcorn making station Prepare decorations for bananas
At the Party Sunbeam Popcorn Maker, $34.95, sunbeam.com.au
Stay on top of the cleaning up as you go or things can get quite messy. If someone offers to help at the party this is a good job for them . While the guests are eating use the time to clean up the cooking table area. Make sure you allow enough time to melt the chocolate for the bananas as this can only be done at the last minute. Label everything your guests will take home with their name (cupcakes, lolly bags, pizza boxes). This avoids mix ups at home time.
Don’t want to have it at home? There are some fantastic places that offer cooking parties for kids. Luscious Affairs, Melbourne lusciousaffairs.com.au Signorelli Gastronomia, Sydney signorelli.com.au Prepare the ingredients for each little chef

Nana's apple pie
This apple pie doesn’t have a pastry lid, and the pastry is simply squashed into the tin rather than being rolled out with a rolling pin, so it’s a fun and easy pie to make! Make sure you use a variety of apple that doesn’t cook to a puree, and don’t forget the whipped cream or ice-cream!
With the chill in the air, it’s time to get cosy and celebrate the Southern Hemisphere tradition of Chirstmas In July! We’ve got a couple of recipes from award winning chef Elizabeth Long that you METHOD
Serves: 6 with your kids, and a fantastic giveaway from some of our favourite retailers. can try Cooking and preparation time: 70 minutes
Enjoy!
1. Put the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and beat with electric beaters until pale and creamy. Beat in the egg. 2. Stir in the flours. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface and knead briefly.
INGREDIENTS PASTRY 125 g unsalted butter at room temperature, diced 165 g ( 3/ 4 cup) caster sugar 1 egg 150 g (1 cup) plain flour 75 g ( 1/ 2 cup) self-raising flour
3. Preheat the oven to 180°C and lightly butter a 25 cm pie dish. 4. Take a ball of dough and form it into a sausage. Stick it around a section of the rim of the dish, flattening it to about 2 cm thick. Take another ball of dough and repeat. Keep doing this until you have a thick rim of pastry all the way around the dish. 5. Keep flattening balls of dough over the base of the dish, more thinly now. Squash each piece of dough together so there are no gaps in the pastry. 6. Combine the apples, spices and sugar in a bowl. Spoon into the pastry base. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden.

M
olly had been to a few pamper parties
this year. She had such a great time and loved everything about this theme, so we set about creating our own pamper studio at home. A few last minute changes were needed on the day as the weather couldn’t have been any worse. But at the end of the day everything turned out perfectly and Molly had “the best party ever!”. We decided on a pink and gold theme with giant balloons and lots of tassel garlands to decorate our space. We created two eye-catching tables and concentrated most of our decorations here. One was set up as a drink and lolly table and the other featured a stunning birthday cake and other sweet treats. As these tables were in the same room as the party table we didn’t need to be too elaborate with the party tables but we chose really pretty table runners and lovely lace patterned plates and cups. Molly loved that we had set up the tables in a T shape so that her and 2 special friends were at the head of the table and she could see all her guests. We decorated her chair with helium balloons and pretty tulle so that it was very obvious where the birthday girl sat.
...at the end of the day everything turned out perfectly and Molly“had the best party ever!”

the moment the girls walked in the door they were totally entertained by Jen, Chloe and Rachel from Petite Party People. From foot spas to manicures and pedicures, gorgeous hair and make up, followed by dressing up and a photo booth the girls had a ball. Not to mention cutting some moves on the dance floor and a fashion parade where they walked the catwalk with their signature pose at the end to show off their new look! Then it was time for lunch for the pampered beauties! The girls sat down at the very long party table and feasted on high tea goodies. This was followed by decadent chocolate cake pops, which I have to say were a hit, the lolly bar where the girls loved helping themselves to the treats, some bags were filled so much they could barely carry them, then we sang Happy Birthday and cut the cake. Top: The girls had their hair, makeup and nails done by Petite Party People Below: At the end of the party, the girls

ove JK’s pamper stationery really helped
set the scene for this party. From the gorgeous invitations, bunting, thank you tags, tent cards and party circles we could create that pretty, girly look. It was fun creating the tassel garlands and tissue board backdrop for the buffet tables. Sometimes you can really surprise yourself with how creative you can be. But allow plenty of time before the party to get these organised. We have created a DIY tutorial to show how easy it is! The party really was so much fun. All the girls had such a great time being pampered, feeling special, dancing with their friends and just being girls! EXPERT
Party Tips
Kim shares with us her expert tips on planning and hosting a beautiful and stress-free pamper party
Planning The Party Room To Move When planning a pamper party assess how much space you have in the venue where you will hold the party. A separate area to set up for the pamper area it is ideal. You can then decorate the room like a “pamper salon” and have a separate area/room for the party table. Pamper Them Pretty! You can either hire a company to do the “pampering” for Kim enlisted the help of lovely ladies from Petite Party People to pamper the girls and keep them entertained.
you, or you can do it yourself with the help of a few friends. Pamper the girls with foot spas, manicures, pedicures, hair, makeup and dress-ups. When the girls are fully pampered and dressed up you can then hold a fashion parade and take snaps of them in a photo booth. We had some cardboard props on sticks to assist with the photo booth such as tiaras, glasses and hats to name a few. It is also a good idea to have a jewellery making table to keep the girls occupied who aren’t being pampered. Simple and Delicious... and also quick and easy! You can make the food very simple for this party. We served scones with jam and cream, mini party pies, sausage rolls, and slices of watermelon. We then served the cake and the cake pops followed by the children helping themselves to the lolly bar.
Watermelon never looked so pretty!
Book in advance Book in your hire items such as tables, chairs, tablecloths, drink dispensers, candy jars and cake stands.
Before The Party Make Your Decorations If you are making the DIY tassels and tissue board have these prepared well in advance. While they are not hard to make they can be time consuming. If you make the tassels in advance make sure you have them hanging so they don’t get crushed. Set Up The Party Table The lolly and cake table can be set up ahead of time (even if you can’t put the lollies in the jars because some little hands might get to them!). You can iron the table cloths, set out the cake stands and platters. Decorate Decorations such as bunting, tissue balls or pom poms Kim hired the pretty gold chairs from Little Wish Parties to ensure every pampered princess had somewhere special to sit
can be hung in advance of the party. If you want to hang things from the wall without ruining your paint work, get the removable sticky hooks. Helium balloons need to be bought on the day of the party so make sure you leave plenty of time to get these organised. Party Favours Lay these out near the front door so you don’t forget to hand them out!
The day of the party If you have done most of the things above beforehand, the day of the party should be relatively stress-free. All you will need to do is: ♥ Prepare any food that needs to be made fresh on the day ♥B uy helium balloons and attach them to the DIY tassels. ♥ Fill the lolly jars
Have a glass of champagne to relax and enjoy the day with your little princess!
♥ Treat boxes were laid on the hall table next to the front door to ensure they weren’t forgotten!

Once you have cut all the strips, unfold the tissue and cut in half which will then make two tassels. Unfold the tissue paper and straighten the fringe out so it is neat, this way the tassels won’t get tangled in the next step. Then start rolling the tissue paper down the middle crease.

Make Your Own! Simone and her team made the Check In Counter out of a cardboard box, corrugated card, paint and wooden dowel. Simple and so easy to do!
From the time check in opened, to the time the last train left the station, Simone from DIY Lolly Buffets ensured it was a party packed with fun, games and train treats!
Arriving at the party the little guests made their way to a ‘check in counter’ and received their conductors hats and bandannas. The lolly buffet featured a classic sweet shop canopy in red and white stripes and was completed with red, white and blue lollies for the guests to fill their boxes and take home. The centrepiece on the buffet table was an mdf train toy tidy we found at Spotlight. Painted in high gloss white paint and filled with train lollipops we added a red and white striped cake bunting to complete the look.

Choo-Choo! Food Train Table Setting
The kids dining table was again set in white linen and simple blue chairs to allow the bold red and blue of the ‘food train’ be the focal point. Train drink bottles were at each place setting along with blue plates and red and white napkins to match the theme. The kids enjoyed blue and red jelly pots, mini hot dogs, vegie sticks and red and blue fairy bread. We set different ‘stations’ up around the room. The ‘Drinks Station’ featured a beverage dispenser with red cordial, glass bottles and water bottles. The ‘Colouring Station’ featured black masking train tracks down the centre of the table with another hand painted train tidy to hold the pencils. Each child had a classic train sheet to colour in and take home with them. The ‘Luggage Claim’ had stacked mini suitcases in red, white and blue and filled some with delicious train cookies made by Cakes on Clarendon. The cookie trains matched the Love JK classic train range and featured a matching Thank You bag topper. Other suitcases were filled with Cakes on Clarendon created the train cake

cake featured a blue train to match the Love JK classic train range. All cake stands and risers on the table were kept white to make the lollies and cake be the focus on the table. Choo Choo Chocolate Bars, popcorn cups and train lollipops featured amongst an assortment of red, white and blue lollies.

A big hit was our train photo booth. Made from mdf board, I was lucky to have a friend paint the train for me. Once painted, we cut the hole out for the kids to pop their heads through. Team up with simple hand painted cardboard train crossing signs secured to dowel and placed in pots. These are simple to make and add instant theming to your party.

SIMONE’S STYLING TIPS We always like to sketch out our tables first and then set them up prior to the event to make sure everything works well, without being cluttered. When using a bold backdrop we like to use stands and risers on the table that are single coloured and minimalistic so the table isn’t over stimulating. Keeping items symmetrical on the table provides an elegant and professional look regardless of the theme of your event. We like to choose 2-3 colours to flow through the party as this is pleasing to the eye, elegant and not distracting.
