MELODY SINCLAIR

Toby and Pete’s work, which we discovered through the agency, is instantly recognisable. Between emblazoning juicy typography on candy wrappers, and being the gurus in music festival branding, the common theme

throughout their work is hyperactive, playful humour. This duo operates a little differently to a full-service studio. The focus is on illustration, and everything else evolves from there.

THE STUDIO

Toby and Pete are based in a studio in Chippendale, which they share with 15 other creatives. The work space is set up on one long desk which is rented out to freelancers who provide invaluable feedback and ideas.

ROLE PLAY

Toby and Pete have been in business together for over three years .We kind of generally start on the creative, and Amanda handles production plus the client stuff. Oh, and at the moment, we’ve got Nick and Vanessa. Nick has just finished at Billy Blue and he’s doing a lot of the After Effects stuff at the moment. We try and involve those guys in the whole process.

We kind of try to stay hands on throughout the whole process, so job roles are fairly flexible. We get a lot of people on board, including Gemma O’Brien (although she probably earns more than us combined), as well as cinematographers, interactive artist developers. The core team changes depending on the work.

There is always music playing and a good energetic vibe to help with days when you feel like you have cabin fever from working on projects for too long.

CREATIVITY

We’ve got a bad habit of just and overloading ourselves. With the more commercial jobs, we usually get a brief and a layout and do work off that. With music, which we’ve been doing a lot, it’s very open — which is both a good and a bad thing. We usually find as much reference as we can and get in touch with the

artist as well. Sometimes that can be difficult, especially with busy clients like Flume.

THE CLIENT

We’re in the situation where we had quite a lot of client relationships before joining the agency, so our arrangement is directly with them. We’re really unique on the Jacky Winter roster, as it isn’t an exclusive relationship. Other studios have most of their work come from Jacky Winter but we like to manage a few things

ourselves. We shoot a lot of stuff, and build a lot of stuff ourselves. I think we kind of like to have a little more of the admin side going through us, as opposed to Jacky Winter. The fact that they are in Melbourne means that we can access a lot more Melbourne clients that we normally wouldn’t be able to.

PROJECTS

Our influences are really varied compared to the actual work we actually end up creating. Music is often a huge inspiration‌ Radiohead is a really good example. They are constantly changing themselves. Yes they are technically musicians, but as a creative, they are constantly changing themselves and re updating what it is they do and who they are.

THE STUDIO

TOKO Design studio was established in 2002 by Dutch graphic designers Eva Dijkstra and Michael Lugmayr. Originally based in the Netherlands the studio has been operating in Surry Hills Australia since 2007 and continues to work with both national and international and clients.

ROLE PLAY

CREATIVITY TOKO’s style is conceptual, clear, colourful, typographic and bold. TOKO’s design process is to create boundaries on conceptual discoveries and the design follows. TOKO design seek simplicity but don’t mind an elaborate approach if it serves a purpose, playful, unexpected and minimilist. When asked about receiving portfolios TOKO said “ The inclusion of self initiated projects. To us, this shows commitment and devotion” Michael says “where you come from and grow up informs your design and process”.

TOKO is a small creative practice so both Eva and Michael work full time and take on different roles like studio manager, accountant, coffee maker, courier, cleaner, thinker, writer and designers. Occasionally they will collaborate with freelancers and interns
