ARTS AND THE ECONOMY The importance of attracting Cultural Tourists and the Potential Impacts of Cultural Tourism on our local economy
WHAT IS A CULTURAL TOURISM Cultural tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing global tourism markets. Cultural and creative industries are increasingly being used to promote destinations and enhance their competiveness and attractiveness. Santa Fe example. Creative tourism is defined as “travel directed toward an engaged and authentic experience, with participative learning in the arts, heritage, or special character of a place.
ECONOMIC IMPACT CULTURAL TOURISM Per ,Travel Industry of America, Cultural Travelers: ●Spend more than average ($623 v $457) ●Use hotels, motels, & B&B’s more ●Are more likely to spend more than $1,000 on a trip ●Travel longer: 5.2 nights v 3.4 nights
ECONOMIC IMPACT CULTURAL TOURISM
Per Americans for the Arts ● 65% of US Travelers include a cultural event as part of their trip ● Non-local art audiences spend more than twice as much as local audiences ($17.42 v $39.96) ● A TripAdvisor.com survey of 2,500 travelers found that 32% plan educational activities on vacation in 2008.
CAPITALIZING ON TRUCKEE’S EXISTING CREATIVE COMMUNITY Truckee’s creative community is a vibrant and growing segment of our population. There are over 200 visual artists and an untold numbers of musicians, chefs, authors, actors, and other performers. There are numerous art organizations.
CAPITALIZING ON TRUCKEE’S EXISTING CREATIVE COMMUNITY ●There are many nationally-known artists living in Truckee – engaging them in local economic development would be mutually beneficial Examples:
Jenny Ross, Danae Anderson, John Pugh, Randall Kramer, and Marcio Decker
CAPITALIZING ON TRUCKEE’S EXISTING CREATIVE COMMUNITY
● There are many experienced teaching
artists, writers, and chefs living in Truckee - Combining art workshops with gallery talks, art lectures, and special presentations, Truckee has the potential of becoming an appealing destination for inspired learning. Santa Fe, NM is a great model Examples: Grant Kaye, Carol Sesko, Anke Haas, Eva S. Nichols, Tom Beebe Karen Terrey
THE WEAK LINK For obvious reasons, Truckee-Tahoe is enticing as a place for creative people to live and work. Unfortunately displacement often occurs due to a lack of leadership and vision in the art community. Gentrification/cost of living also contributes to displacement.

KEY MESSAGE #1 â—?The integration of existing arts & cultural assets into the Truckee Brand and Place-based Marketing efforts currently underway should be considered very important. â—?The development of new infrastructure and other cultural assets should be addressed as part of the branding process
KEY MESSAGE #2 Given the large volume of cultural travelers, studies show that cultural/creative tourism generates millions of dollars for destination communities in spending in the categories of shopping, food, lodging, and other expenses. With sustained investment, Truckee can capture this segment while mitigating the impacts of climate variations on winter sports
Key Message #3 The Future Enhance the Support System: Develop an economic initiative designed to provide artists and art businesses with the means to develop and promote workshops and other hands-on educational experiences Linking the new CreativeTruckee.org website to Town, Chamber, and other organizational websites is an idea that came from a similar initiative in Santa Fe, NM Seek partnerships and collaborations with the ski and hospitality industries to create packages integrating cultural offerings with recreational or environmental aspects.
