REPORTING TO OUR BUSINESSES 2017-18
The heart of SW19
2017 - 2018
FROM THE CHAIR Although now into the second year of our second five year term, I continue to be impressed by the ability of the Love Wimbledon team to consistently deliver on a number of fronts. Their passion and enthusiasm to make Wimbledon a better place for businesses, visitors and residents is outstanding and I am full of admiration for their dedication and commitment to Paul Harvey, Chair support business, promote the town, keep it in check and lobby for a better future. I am also grateful to all of the members of our Board who provide a significant sounding board and a practical support to the team, to ensure that projects are delivered on behalf of all of our businesses, ones that make a difference and add value for business whether office or shop based, cultural or leisure. It is very encouraging that the town has bucked the national trend in a number of areas; reduced levels of crime, exceptionally high shop occupancy rates, the place of choice for new business and a vibrant day and night time economy. As a Wimbledonian who has a business here, who lives here, who shops here and enjoys our town, I care, as do all the Board, about Wimbledon's future. With a new masterplan to be imminently shared by Merton Council, and Crossrail 2 development still likely, we will continue to lobby for the best for Wimbledon. Although we at Love Wimbledon are supportive, this is not at any cost. The team will be keeping the dialogue open with relevant parties including Crossrail 2 who recently stated 'we have reviewed a number of alternative options for providing a Crossrail 2 station in Wimbledon while seeking to minimise our impact on the town centre'.
The Board 2017-2018 Made up of representatives of the town centre business community. The Board meet quarterly to oversee Love Wimbledon activity, approve the annual budget and delivery plan. Since November 2016 the Board has been chaired by Paul Harvey Managing Partner at Morrisons Solicitors.

2017 - 2018
SECURING THE BEST FOR BUSINESS New bars, new shops, new places to eat, the last year has brought in some fresh businesses. Wimbledon has always been a place of firsts; Office Shoes, Sticks n Sushi, Uniqlo, Polka Theatre ( UK’s first children’s theatre) helping businesses test the water before they roll out nationally. It’s also a place of established HQs with a national presence like Coty, Domestic & General, Lidl, CIPD, Capsticks, Rymans, Close Brothers, Elliott Wood and Club Med. What makes Wimbledon work is the combination of engaged businesses, the loyal resident base and the unique transport connectivity. We regularly do a health check on the town centre and Wimbledon continues to be a strong force; high occupancy rates, good footfall and an attractive place for people to visit and work. With increased pressure on high streets we work to help save many Wimbledon businesses money by providing a range of services from waste collection to marketing support. We energise the town centre through popular events and activities and work to make it look that bit nicer (think 25 foot Christmas tree and flowers!) But we mustn’t rest on our laurels… We continue to improve; in the last year we launched a new website, provided new business updates, an engaging social media programme and our privilege card is now used by thousands of people. We supported new businesses within the BID, lobbied for a cleaner town centre and continued our work to make sure Wimbledon has a bright future. This update gives you a taste of what the team is delivering, with the aim to make Wimbledon even better; a better place for your business.
Helen Clark Bell, CEO, Love Wimbledon

MARKETS TO ENTICE AND DELIGHT Our markets support local artisans and entrepreneurs, animating The Piazza with buzzy stalls and places to chill. With a mix of food, gifts, hand-crafted accessories and one-offs, Love Wimbledon continues to improve the ambience of the town. MONTHLY MARKETS Eighty-eight stall holders From March to October we hold a monthly market, energised with music or entertainment. Local businesses use it to showcase their products or provide tasters. This popular gem strengthens the heart of Wimbledon.
CHRISTMAS MARKETS Over fifty local artisans and traders Eleven days of this crisp and cool market gets Wimbledon Town Centre feeling that bit more Christmassy.

LUSOBRAZIL They run a popular stall at our market every month and see the Love Wimbledon monthly market as an absolute must to trade at, bringing in customers from South West London and Surrey. Their warm service and freshly cooked delicacies have made them a real destination. They were highly commended in the Time & Leisure Food and Drink Awards 2017.

PLACES & SPACES POP UP MUSIC VENUE A first for Wimbledon…. The Sound Lounge needed a home. Working with the owners, the landlord and Merton Council we helped host a temporary pop-up café and bar whilst the contract for a new shop was in negotiation. The outcome was a cool bar and great music in the heart of Wimbledon – a win/win for all parties.
LIGHTING UP DARK NIGHTS 5,000 twinkling red and white lights illuminating our 25 foot tree for the Christmas season
STILL BLOOMIN’ MARVELLOUS Bee loving plants and colour around town in our flowerbeds. And our social media followers can’t get enough of them – doing our bit to make Wimbledon that bit nicer.

STREET MANAGEMENT SERVICES CLEANING UP OUR STREETS Being a busy, popular town centre, the BID invests in extra street cleansing which the council do not deliver. Our deep cleanse happens predominantly in June, to get the town ready for tennis and September / October time.

ERRADICATING GROT SPOTS Hard to reach areas like recesses and fire escapes but also hidden areas like back alleys and pathways often build up with dirt and grime. We work with businesses and residents to prioritise the cleaning of these.
LOVE WIMBLEDON: Deep cleanse Remove gum Erase ingrained stains and grease
TOWN RANGER MANAGEMENT The BID has an active Town Ranger who provides daily walk arounds to investigate issues including graffiti, water leaks and waste issues.
"The key is resolving issues - from people dumping domestic waste (our work helped reduce this by 80%) to chasing the landlord or council about graffiti removal. It's great when things are sorted - as it's so important to have a cared for town centre." Tom Ruffell, Town Ranger

THE COUNCIL: Sweep Use a glutton Clear litter
WE REPORTED OVER : 150 instances of graffiti 250 household waste issues 50 cases of fly tipping 50 commercial waste issues 40 highway issues from pot holes to broken paving

KEEPING WIMBLEDON SAFE LOW CRIME RATE Merton is the 4th safest borough in London and Wimbledon Town Centre has bucked the trend by reducing crime. We provide monthly update briefings for our pubs and bars, we have grown the successful use of Town Link Radio and we connect CCTV, Council, businesses and the police to combat crime.
‘Town Link Radio has played a crucial part in the role of reducing shoplifting. It enables stores to highlight anti-social behaviour immediately and work together, in partnership with the Police and CCTV, to deal with crime.’
4TH SAFEST LONDON BOROUGH TO HELP FREE TOOLS COMBAT CRIME
BID businesses can access Littoralis for free to help identify offenders. There is a small charge for Town Link Radio – please contact us if you would like to join the programme.

Working with wayfinding specialists, we developed a new parking signage strategy to: Give advanced parking directions Make it easier to find the car parks Outline how many spaces there are Remove street clutter In partnership with Centre Court Shopping Centre, additional (discreet but clear) signage was put in, old signage replaced and some signage refurbished to remove clutter, smarten the look and create consistency.
