Milton Bradley Company

Who We Are

Milton Bradley Company is best known for the board game company and is one of the great 19th-century American inventor-industrialists. Its iconic games, such as Candy Land, Chutes and ladders, Mouse Trap and Game of Life, had a lasting influence on American culture in the 20th century. Although Milton Bradley’s game invention seems to be a great accomplishment, gaining a lot of profit or fame from it was not Bradley’s actual motivation nor his end goal. In fact, Milton Bradley didn’t set out to be a game maker. He trained as a drafts-man, drawing plans for railroad cars, they went on to open a lithography business. He also had many non-game inventions in Zoetrope and the color wheel. His first design of the board game, The Checkered Game of Life, was profoundly different from gambling or competition game. Instead, it demonstrates its value as an educational tool, in promoting linear thinking, and concepts of sequence. It inspired players to achieve “Happy Old Age,” as well as help them cooperate with others, creating a vision of happy life and fulfillment.

Moreover, Bradley was more than just a successful entrepreneur. He was an early advocate of the emerging kindergarten movement started by Friedrich Fröbel in Germany. Based on Fröbel ’s theory, Bradley embraced the idea of inspiring children, and supplied blossoming kindergartens with educational toys. He produced many games aimed primarily at children, often depicting animals and sometimes based on popular folk stories. He sold a wide line of school supplies and optical toys in addition to educational games for youngsters and their families. To sum up, Bradley’s game was not only designed for fun, but for enlightening. He sparked the imagination of young children. He reinforced the connection between individuals and the community, bring people up to the higher level of happiness and amusement.

Milton Bradley’s game was not only designed for fun, but for enlightening.
