2017-18 Annual Fund Campaign to Focus on Lowell Library Reinventing the Lowell Library to Elevate Learning and Collaboration By Mark Budak ’73 Over the Summer of 2014 the Lowell Alumni Association funded the renovation of the student Drop-in Computer Lab in the Lowell library. It was received with tremendous enthusiasm by the entire Lowell community. At that time, it was the largest single capital improvement ever funded by the LAA. The Lowell Alumni Association is now taking on a larger, more exciting, more significant project to meet the needs of our Lowell students and faculty — transforming the Lowell Library into a modern facility for learning and collaboration. The project will include a significant investment in modern furniture, electrical upgrades, technology and reconfiguration of interior space. Head Librarian Steve Sasso explains, “To prepare students for 21st century post secondary education and work, the Lowell library looks to evolve into an integrated Learning Commons, a flexible, state of the art space that supports the wide range of ways students need to operate in order to succeed in today’s world. This space should

accommodate private and focused study, as well as collaborative activities.” Through a series of Lowell communitywide meetings organized by the Lowell Librarian and school Administration, the design concept will be further developed to address the needs of the school and carry out their vision of reinventing the space into a new center for education and collaboration. Our Library is the academic heart of the campus. In order to further promote the students’ private study, collaborative needs, social connections and team projects, the redesign will address these needs as well as support campus and community events. Librarian Sasso explains, “Clubs currently do not have a presence in the library. There are projects in development which call for collaboration between student clubs and the library.” A modern, flexible design will create collaborative learning and works environments for student clubs and association. In addition to the main library, the scope of work will include transforming the adjacent Meyer library into flexible study/ meeting rooms in Phase 2. We are pleased to announce that the San Francisco Unified School District has already made a significant financial commitment to partner with us on the project. Work is scheduled be completed over the summer of 2019. In order to make this vision a reality, we need the generous support of our donors. We are counting on you fund this transformation and give a great institution like Lowell a library it truly deserves. If you would like to donate today, please go to: www.lowellalumni.org/donate

President’s Message By John Trasviña ’76 An alumni association has a dual role to help graduates look back and current students, faculty and staff to advance forward. I am pleased to report that our association is fulfilling these roles and, with your help, we can do much more. We look back at our Lowell years, organize reunion celebrations and follow our classmates’ milestones through the items they share with us to keep in touch. We also come together and big goodbye to our classmates. Over the summer, we expressed our deep gratitude to the family of James Rosenthal ’50 for his lifetime of service to Lowell as LAA Vice President and to the nation as our ambassador. In October, hundreds of alums celebrated the 55th anniversary of “the new Lowell” on Eucalyptus Drive. For many, it was their first time back since graduation and their first glimpse of the new Science and Foreign Language buildings. Our focus as an alumni association is also on today’s school. We are steadfastly dedicated to ensuring that today’s San Francisco youth have the opportunity to experience a Lowell education. One important aspect of that mission is to make sure capable students with potential from all neighborhoods and communities

find Lowell approachable and welcoming so they can thrive in their high school years. Our support of diversity efforts and investments in the Wellness Center and for an on-site, full-time counselor devoted to guiding our students on the college path are critical priorities for LAA. Also funding our annual scholarships and grants to student programs, your alumni donations help Lowell prepare our students for college, careers and lifetimes that likely will reach the 22nd century! Elsewhere in this newsletter, you will read about an emerging and exciting campaign we are about to undertake to update our library to equip it to ready our students for their futures. We consider Lowell students to be “the best”, a description we too infrequently apply to our leaders. While we are justifiably proud of Lowell alumni who hold important government posts – Justice Stephen ’55 and Judge Charles ’59 Breyer, Judge Haywood Gilliam ’87, California State Controller Betty Yee ’75, Supervisors Malia Cohen ’96 and Katy Tang ’02, and School Board member Emily Murase ’82 are a few who come to mind – there continue to be barriers to excellence in leadership in and out of government, especially for women and

minorities. Our alumna Denise Peck ’75 recently co-authored an important Ascend study about leadership barriers in Silicon Valley especially for Asian Americans and women. Fostering networks among our alums in their professional areas can promote the mentoring that will help career success and be a guide to our current students. We are seeking ways to better engage our Lowell alumni community to meet each other, learn from each other, help each other and advance together. In 2018, we will be augmenting our social media presence to be closer and promote new programs and events. We value your ideas and suggestions, your support of our Annual Fund and your presence at January’s annual meeting. Let’s do even more together for Lowell and our futures!

Class of 1955 – 62-Year Reunion By Robbie Hermann ’55 This is our 62nd year out of Lowell High School. Well, we celebrated not only our 80th birthdays but the birthday of our Golden Gate Bridge. That was finished in 1937. Gee, that sounds like a long time ago. You would think, who cares about that? Well, we cared about that and 71 of us enjoyed the moment that lasted 3 plus hours. We have a dedicated class and a bonded one that keeps us coming back and remembering our great High School. It was a wonderful time in our lives and we received a tremendous education. Two years ago at our 60th, we were honored to have our poll voted “most likely to succeed” student there…Supreme Court

Justice Steve Breyer. He gave a heart felt talk for 10 minutes or so and brought us right back to our roots. We felt like we were at a rally in the Lowell court yard. “ALL HAIL LOWELL HIGH SCHOOL!” Our committee over the years has done a wonderful job and our meetings the best. Fall ’66 and Spring ’67 Graduates By Claudia Wolf Eshoo ’67 During the very warm Labor Day Weekend of 2017, members from the Classes of Fall 1966 and Spring 1967 gathered to celebrate their 50th Reunion and commemorate the “Summer of Love”. Our memories were reflected in our attire, attitude and enjoyment of seeing one another again after 50 years. The Reunion Committee, consisting of Chairperson Claudia Wolf Eshoo, and members Michael Becker, Chris Carroll Wolf, Andrea Keller, Susan Kroll Diamond, Jessica Kuzmanich Gaynor, Vicki Leeds, Carl Nielsen, Sylvia Parkhurst Warnes, Lynn Perazzi Dunlop, Sharon Sommer and Gene Vlahos orchestrated two events with

200 (140 classmates) in attendance. A campus tour was held on September 1 with help from retired teacher, Teresa Bookwalter, the Shield and Scroll and the Lowell Concert Choir under the direction of Jason Chan. We were serenaded by the choir, and then whisked off to visit old and new buildings and facilities around the campus. Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City was the perfect setting on September 2. We gathered in and around the Cypress Room for a no host bar with appetizers. We mixed, mingled and munched our way to a sit-down dinner in the Merced Ballroom. Throughout the evening we enjoyed background music of the ’60s and slideshows, a video from our 30th reunion, taking pictures and reconnecting with one another. Many of our school and class officers were present including our SA president Geordie Lawry. Classmate Wendy Harris joined Geordie as the two shared master of ceremony duties. Everyone took home a commissioned ’60s style “Summer of Love” poster by Kurt “Crowbar” Kangas that also was replicated in the invitations. As is customary, we concluded the evening with singing “The Lowell Hymn”, dancing and a wonderful time back in San Francisco, the city by the bay and Lake Merced. The committee would like to thank Terry Abad and the Lowell Alumni Association for their support.

Happy 60th Birthday Reunion Party for Class of ’75 Alums!! On October 15, 2017, about 140 alums and friends gathered to toast and celebrate their collective 60th birthday at the Fort McKinley Restaurant in SSF. We just could not wait to get together since our 40-year reunion two years ago, and it was a natural progression to host another reunion to celebrate this momentous occasion. Throughout the evening the dance floor was filled with people rocking to the wonderful nostalgic ’70s music performed by the KickBack band (featuring our own Cyrian Tabuena). We went back in time to enjoy another special Lowell dance!

At the spur of the moment, classmate Lisa Vande Voorde put out a red bucket to raise funds for the NorCal Wildfire Relief fund. The class collected $885 in checks and gift cards that evening. We truly missed our friends who were not able to join us for the birthday party and raised a glass in your honor too. To our dear classmates, please keep in touch via the LAA or join our FB page. Cheers and good health to all, and we look forward to seeing you at the next reunion! 60 is indeed the new 40! Band and cake.

Counselor Supports College Bound Lowell Students By Joyce Tom ’81 Nearly every one of the approximately 2800 students at Lowell plans to attend college, and this year, for the very first time, they have the help and support of a full time college counselor. Thanks to generous donations from Lowell alums that helped to fund half of the position, Maria Aguirre was hired to be the school’s first-ever full time college counselor. Ms. Aguirre is no stranger to Lowell students. She has been an academic counselor at Lowell for the past eight years and has advised over 2000 students about topics ranging from what classes to take to how to get to school on time. Ms. Aguirre observes, “Our students would greatly benefit from college planning earlier in high school. And by this I mean learning about the variety [of] college institutions that are available to them… You would be surprised by how many of our students have never been to a college campus.” In addition, with regard to college essays, she states, “[s]tudents really struggle organizing their ideas and putting them on paper so they need to be encouraged to start a lot earlier.” Ms. Aguirre’s familiarity with Lowell students and the challenges they face allows her to design a comprehensive college counseling program that is tailored to address the needs of all Lowell students. In just the first few months since she started, Ms. Aguirre has transformed the Volunteers in College and Career Information (VICCI) Center into the Lowell College Center, has visited every

senior registry to announce her role and support, and has offered several workshops focused on various aspects of the college application process. These workshops are held during and after school so that the maximum number of students can attend at their convenience. She also offers appointments for oneon-one work with students and families, and is in the process of implementing new methods for communicating with students and families. Importantly, she collaborates with the VICCI volunteers (parents, alums, friends, and parents of alums) to plan projects and events that dovetail with, and build upon, the other college workshops and programs (see below for a list of new workshops and programs offered and implemented). In this whirlwind of activity, Ms. Aguirre notes, “[m]y biggest challenge has been trying to stay focused on implementing a few of our ideas at a time. There is so much excitement and so many great ideas for the College Center, but I have to step back and focus on rolling out a few of them really well.” In the coming months, in addition to continuing to support seniors in their college admissions journey, Ms. Aguirre plans to reach out to sophomores and juniors, and to design additional services, such as field trips to local colleges and universities. By all measures, Ms. Aguirre’s college counseling program is off to a busy and ambitious start. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!,” shouts Ms. Aguirre. “Without [the LAA], everything we have accomplished thus far would not be possible.”

Lowell Takes First Place at 2017 Empire Mock Trial By Christopher Ying ’19 Attending Empire Mock Trial was one of the most invigorating experiences of my high school career. Over the course of three exciting and intense days, our team participated in five trials, ultimately winning the championship round to come in first of 28 teams. Looking back on that weekend, however, the camaraderie and personal knowledge gained overshadows any trophy. Going into Empire, to be absolutely frank, I didn’t really have a love for mock trial, it was just something I did. My usual role on the team — the attorney arguing the pre-trial motion — does not always get the most speaking time, nor do you get to take part in witness examinations or make objections. But Empire pushed me to do these things. At practices leading up to the Empire competition, I would often feel lost and incompetent; I couldn’t object, and I had trouble formulating good questions to ask in examinations. It was frustrating at times. It wasn’t until Empire, where I was constantly on my toes round after round, battling against the best competition from

around the country, that things started to gel for me. With each round I gained traction and a greater understanding of my role as an attorney. The Empire competition changed my mind and attitude about mock trial, and it also gave me a better sense of how things I learn in the courtroom can be applied to my everyday life.

2016-17 Annual Fund Campaign Finishes Strong; Enhanced Student Support Already Launched Thanks to a surge of donations just before our 2016-17 Annual Fund Campaign wrapped up on June 30, the Lowell Alumni Association’s plans to increase support for today’s students are already seeing results. With more than 1,800 donations totaling over $367,000, we have been able to hire a full-time college counseling program director (thanks to matching funds from the school site budget) to focus exclusively on educating and assisting Lowell students and their families as they navigate the labyrinthine college selection, application and financial aid processes. (For detailed information regarding this program, please see LAA Development Committee Co-Chair Joyce Tom’s excellent article on page 5.) Another portion of these funds has been earmarked for exciting programs designed by our Wellness Center to expand student support services, including hiring a Americorps

member for two years and implementing a universal screening program addressing mental health and high risk behavior. Of course, our Annual Fund Campaign also supports our recurring programs, from our grants program that provides $75,000 annually to a wide range of academic and extracurricular programs to the very newsletter you hold in your hand and our support for class reunions. Many thanks to everyone who helped to make our 2016-17 campaign such a success. And we invite every alumnus and friend of Lowell to participate in our 2017-18 Annual Fund Campaign in order to help transform the Lowell library to better serve today’s talented and hard-working Lowell students.

Reflections on Lowell’s 2016-17 Year By Assistant Principal Holly L. Giles Editor’s Note: The remarks below were transcribed from Ms. Giles’ address to the faculty and staff this past August as the new school year began. Thank you to Assistant Principal Giles for allowing us to share her speech. Last year was a reflective year on how we are perceived by our students, where we considered how they perceive themselves, how we view them, and how we view ourselves. These revelations opened our eyes to an equity lens and many truths that some of us were blinded from, some didn’t recognize, and some innocently didn’t recognize that existed within themselves, but had an impact on student learning. In that recognition, however, we learned, applied and implemented strategies to help our students engage with one another or become courageous to speak up when their classroom experiences become uncomfortable, and made us aware of it. It was through time for some, acceptance by others, and overcoming personal emotional barriers and rediscovering their passion for teaching, that we renewed our efforts to help our students feel valued and confident in their achievements. And as a result, we now see positive growth in the weak areas that Lowell has been plagued with during the 13 years I have served Lowell. I don’t know about you, but through the year-long equity training we had, I am less afraid to speak my truth, and have learned to adjust to the conditions that I deal with working here at Lowell. I stand tall, full of hope, ambition, and determination to be and do my best to support you as you support the students you teach. Thank you for this excellent progress shown in last year’s test results. Your effort is ongoing and it is in the right direction for continued improvement and benefit for our students. As you have trusted in my leadership, I continue to trust and believe in you and your “CARE” for student success. Thank you.

Lowell Celebrates! 55th Anniversary of the Eucalyptus Drive Campus

By Kate Lazarus ’01 On October 14, hundreds of alumni returned to Lowell to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the Eucalyptus Drive campus. Unlike the weather many of us remember from our time at Lowell, the sun was shining and it was a beautiful day to connect with friends, meet other alums, see how the campus has changed, and watch Lowell student performances and demonstrations. The schedule of events included performances by Orchestra, Choir, Dance Company. The JROTC Drum Corps, Drill Team, and Flag Team also showed their skills. Other student groups hosted open-houses and demonstrations, including Yearbook, Journalism,

Robotics and Science Research Program. Members of Lowell’s Shield and Scroll Honor Society took alumni on campus tours, including a visit to the new track, which the Alumni Association supported. Students provided barbeque and baked goods for lunch. In addition, members of the Class of 1965 gathered to celebrate 70th birthdays. Many alumni took home souvenir shots from a photo booth The day concluded with a tribute to Lowell Faculty. Supervisor Katy Tang ’02 presented a certificate of appreciation to Lowell Physics Teacher Richard Shapiro, recognizing his years of excellent service to Lowell. Many thanks to all the students and alumni who made the day such a memorable celebration of Lowell.

Spring & Fall

MARGARET “PEGGY” HUTCHINS BRENNAN: Still above ground in Reno, NV.

HELEN DIETRICH ONDRY: Had to move out of the snow in Truckee. Now live in Eskaton Village, Rossville.

1941

BILL MORGAN: I saw Jack Lynd in your newspaper. I too am still kicking in Fresno, CA. I too played football with him. I’m 88 and still kicking. Say hello to all that are still here.

Spring & Fall

CHRISTINE KUTULAS ROED: I celebrated my 94th birthday in July. I enjoy working in my garden, volunteering at the El Cerrito Historical Society’s room, and reading. I miss my husband Max Roed ’31.

1946

Spring & Fall

JOANNE SUSSKIND TICK: Still around. Lots of travel, theatre and socializing. THOMAS HELMUT OSTWALD: Hello to all. After 30 years I have moved from Rancho Mirage to Carmichael, California. I live at wonderful Eskaton Village Community. If you are near here give me a call at (916) 5502356.

1947

Spring & Fall

JOHN BELL: Cashmere sweaters, Levis, and white bucks, while dancing “The Stroll” in the court!! So many memories! Peggy and I, married for 53 years, are in reasonably good health, and living in Brookdale, Sonoma (one of God’s waiting rooms!) and enjoying life. Cheers to all my classmates. JEANNE TANAKA GARCIA: Where has the years gone! It seems graduation was only yesterday. After graduation, I traveled, met my husband, had 5 children, worked, retired (24 years), now volunteer once a week. The most traveling done these days is twice daily walks with my Beagle. I’m still in fairly good shape but time has taken some of my energy. I keep hanging in there and look forward to reading about Lowell’s graduates. J. ARTHUR FREED: Lucky communities have an essential someone who works behind the scenes. Known for his sound judgment, competence, selflessness, and humor, J. Arthur Freed is a Los Alamos Essential Someone. Art and his wife, Nancy, the love of his life, arrived in Los Alamos in 1958 to accept positions at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. His work centered on the library and Nancy was a staff member. They retired in 1991. Art has served on the boards of numerous organizations including Friends of Los Alamos County Libraries and Los Alamos Historical Society. He received the Los Alamos History Medal in 2016. He is the second longest serving member of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee (45 years) and was President of the Services and Aid Relief to the Poor, which helped establish a cancer clinic in southern India. For over 30 years, Art served on the board of the Los Alamos Concert Association, and recently donated funds for a tribute concert to Nancy, who died in 1994, requesting only that a violinist be booked if possible. That concert, with world-renowned violinist Joshua Bell, was held to a capacity crowd. Most people in the audience were completely unaware of Art’s extremely generous gift, made in memory of the woman to whom he was so devoted. JANET CHILJIAN FOX: I read with great pleasure and pride your article in the Summer 2017 Newsletter about the 100th Anniversary of the Lowell Concert Orchestra. While attending Lowell, I played the string bass in the Concert Orchestra and the Jazz Band. At that time, I was the only bass player as well as the only woman bass player. When I attend classic orchestra concerts at Disney Hall in Los Angeles, I look for the string bass section which reminds me of my time at Old Lowell. Thanks for the fond memories.

MARGOT HELMUTH SCHEVILL: Still doing appraisals of guatemalan textile. In July, cruising to Alaska for first time with my niece and her husband. ELSIE SOLOMON MICKOLA: At 85 years of age, I know a good education is the “stair-step” to a good life. Lowell gave us that in the 1940’s and now in the 2000’s. Never “stop” learning what has meaning for you.

JOHN RISING: Our oldest grandson Franklin Spencer Bird is graduated from Stanford where his mom and dad and I also went. Love and best wishes to all my classmates. I was sorry to lose George Richard Mann and Lawrence “Larry” Rabinowitz. To each of you, my most fond and best wishes. SONYA PADGETT STEVENSON: Still moving, traveling and continuing our education. Our 3 sons have given us 4 grandsons who are all grown adults now. We finally sold the big house and moved to a retirement community; easier living.

IRENE ENSTROM KAUS: All’s well with us. Our granddaughter is enjoying her very own horse and showing in the Hunter/ Equitation class. Her mom is green with envy. GAIL HURLEY RUXTON: Looking forward to Spring ’52 Reunion in October 2017. Will be returning from Australia. JOAN GOLDAMMER KJEMTRUP: I’m still living in Los Gatos – 54 years now! Three daughters – London, Chapel Hill, NC, and Davis, CA; also three grandchildren.

DONN BERNSTEIN: To Lowellites of any class, should you be visiting New York City, rest assured the Cardinal welcome mat is out to greet you. I retired at 81 last June 30 after a fulfilling, rewarding and productive 54-year career in sports communications. I always beam, proudly, when I see Lowell legends Stephen Breyer ’55 and Laurence “Larry” Baer ’75 making national news. And belated congrats to the inestimable coach John Donohue whose baseball team was my guest for lunch on an eastern swing many years ago. My best to Terence “Terry” Abad ’76. JUDY KELLEHER RIGAS: Next year is our 65th reunion, tentative date: mid October 2018. Last September, I went to Italy, Austria, and Greece. A great time with family and friends in Italy. Spending this summer at Tahoe with my dog, Lady, and visits by family and friends. JEFFRY A. WISNIA: I just returned from my 60th MIT class reunion. Still living in Red Sox nation and enjoying it. JACK SAROYAN: After retiring from a private dental practice downtown eleven years ago, I have continued to volunteer teaching at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry one day each week. We have a new location on 5th Street at #155 between

Mission and Howard Streets and welcome new patients. Any students interested in Dentistry can attend our annual orientation day. Call the University for details.

WILLIAM CHISUM: Continuing to enjoy my retirement. I had 32 years with San Diego Unified School District. While on active duty with my Navy and many years with the Naval Reserve, reached the rank of Captain. I’ve had 27 years on the Holiday Bowl Committee and 50 years as a member of Elks and 25 years as a member of Lions. This is all shared with my wife of 57 years. Life is great!!!

SAM FRANZELLA: Well, I am making my big 80 this year, August 26th. Happy birthday to all my 80-year old classmates. Who would have thought we made it. God bless us all. ROGER HERST: Living in Washington DC. He is an ordained rabbi with a doctorate in Middle Eastern studies and has written 12 published novels.

Lowellite called “America is Still the Place” or “Black Gold”, please email me at wfo@safti. com. We are currently looking for distribution, so any contacts or suggestions of individuals that could help are greatly welcome. On emailing with the request on “America is Still the Place”, blu-ray copy will be mailed to you at the address you provided. LEONARD FROOMIN: Sue and I are blessed with five granddaughters; Kayla joined the Army National Guard and starts the San Mateo Police department academy next month. Her younger sister, Sara is in training to be a pediatric oncology nurse. She is at San Diego State and has earned A’s consistently throughout her schooling. Her cousin Taylor also is a straight A student with the highest GPA in her class. As well, Taylor’s younger sister just graduated eighth grade – with all A’s throughout her nine years. Their parents and grandparents could not be more proud. DR. VICKI GREEN: Delightful 60th reunion! Looking forward to our next one with all possible alums.

1957

Spring & Fall

KAREN TYREE CROMMIE: For the last 30 years, I’ve lived with my husband, David, in the Haight Ashbury – walking distance from the beloved old brick pile, which is now primarily an ESL center helping immigrants with basic work skills. (High school is a difficult time in life and it’s a bittersweet experience to see those stairs, that gym, that corner store.) On a lighter note, had lunch with Carol Hicks and Peggy Berry at Scoma’s last year when the latter was in town from her home in Texas. I see Lester O’Shea, who looks remarkably young, at the weekly meeting of the Economic Round Table, and enjoy his unique perspective on current issues. I’m involved with San Francisco Village, the DA’s Neighborhood Court program, edit a 12-page quarterly newsletter for the Haight/ Cole Valley and am always behind on my email. Looking forward to our 62nd reunion on September 26. Thanks to Carol and Robbie for stepping up once again.

PATI MURRAY BOYD: Looking forward to our 60th reunion on November 18! Enjoying 12 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandsons. Splitting time between the Bay Area and Redmond, OR.

PAULA SKENE: I am forever grateful for the years spent at Lowell, for the friendships, the education, and for the spirit of participation that the environment fostered, both at school and beyond. After 40 years in business, I am still working and enjoying both the design and production aspects of Paula Skene Designs, as well as the communication with customers form many cultures and countries. We will have an “open studio” in Emeryville the first Saturdays in October and November. The first Saturday in December celebrating the holidays with live music and food. You are all invited. www.paulaskenedesigns.com

PUAL B. HOFMANN: Reports he enjoyed the past three annual meetings of the Joint Commission International Standards Advisory Panel in Amsterdam, Dubai, and Madrid and is looking forward to this year’s meeting in Rome. In addition, he and Lois had a wonderful time in New Zealand in January as well as Scotland and Ireland in late June and July last year and will be going to Morocco and Spain this year before spending a week at Lake Tahoe with their children and grandchildren in August. Paul notes he now declines about half of the requests to serve as an expert witness in medical malpractice cases, but he still enjoys this activity, his work with the American Hospital Association, other consulting activities and serving on the boards of three nonprofits.

WILLIAM WERNER: Though I finally let my last employee move on, I continue to practice architecture, mostly as a design consultant. I am still a member of The Sausalito Planning Commission and am about to join our General Plan Update Advisory Committee. As a member of the 2015-2016 Marin County Civil Grand Jury, I learned far more about our governmental agencies than I ever expected to know. Anyone who has the opportunity to serve on their Civil Grand Jury should do it – it is an extremely rewarding experience.

SUSIE SCURICH: On April 7, 2017, I was honored to be able to participate at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Coronado, CA to remember, 50 years ago, the passing of our dear friend and classmate Daniel McCarthy Mann ’60. He was killed in Vietnam on April 7, 1967 (Navy Seal – Team One). His sacrifice will touch our hearts forever. RICHARD TERRY: Retired 6 years, living in Moraga. Both sons live nearby, 7 grandchildren. Stay active with church, scouts, cycling, and travel. Available to help with reunion anytime. GARY JOE: Deeply missing our dear friend and classmate, Paul Rosenberg. We met, having adjacent lockers in Mr. Neff’s P.E. class. We became charter members of the San Francisco Saints Fan Club of the newly formed American Basketball League. The league folded shortly after one year. Our friendship lasted a lifetime. Also, remembering with much love, our classmate, Paul Fong III, who passed in December. His wide smile and jovial laugh were his signature greeting before Lowell, during Lowell, and after Lowell. Missing you big time, good buddy. SYBIL SCHWARTZ HARD: Still enjoying retirement with hobbies and as much traveling as possible. Looking forward to our 55th in September 2018. MARY MAURER OTTO: Julie Winship, Cindy Lyon, Mary Maurer visit their 94-year old six grade teacher in San Francisco. ALLAN P. GOLD: I’m still working full time at my School Psychology position in Tiburon, almost 42 years. It keeps me “young” and connected. Our 55th reunion is being planned for September 2018. Contact me if you haven’t received information (agold8946@aol.com). We want to see everyone there! AUDREY FOSTER-HENRIQUEZ: Retired 17 years from Wells Fargo Bank. Have enjoyed traveling and spending time with my family and friends. JENNIE HORN: I am glad to see Lowell keeping up its high academic standards. I worked in SFUSD’s student assignment office (1992-2001) and was responsible for Lowell Admissions.

Keeping in Touch items received after October 20 will appear in the Spring newsletter

1964

Spring & Fall

DENISE KAUFMAN: Some of your may recall that I was part of the Bay Area’s first all-women band in the 60’s – The Ace of Cups. No record labels would sign an allfemale band then. So we’ve been in the studio for the past year and will release our debut studio album this fall, 35 songs with guests Taj Mahal, Jackson Browne, Bob Weir, and many more. It’s never too late!! ALEXANDER LEE LOCK: I retired recently from my third career. I am still active in community non-profits organization, volunteering my time. Best wishes and good health to fellow alums. BRIAN HERBERT: I graduated from Lowell High School in the Spring of 1964. At the time, I didn’t realize I would become an author one day, but I did have a truly great literature teacher at Lowell. His name is Dennis Rauchman, and he taught English Literature. Mr. Rauchman inspired me with the classic novels he had us read, with his love of books, and with his interesting anecdotes. I was able to re-connect with him briefly a couple of years ago, and I told him how much his classes meant to me. On August 23rd, my wife Jan and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. In 1967, we eloped to Reno and were married in a small chapel. Little did we know what a life of adventure we would experience together. Recently we returned from a 3-month overseas trip to commemorate our anniversary. It was one of perhaps 20 “trips of a lifetime” we’ve had, so we have been blessed. Jan told me years ago that “this life is not a dress rehearsal,” and she convinced me to travel, so that we could experience other cultures and enjoy our lives to the fullest. She is a remarkable woman, and I was lucky to meet her at such a young age. When I was going to Lowell, my father, Frank Herbert, wrote the classic novel DUNE, which is considered to be the greatest science fiction novel ever written. It has sold millions of copies all over the world. He wrote much of it in San Francisco, when we lived on Potrero Hill. In those days, it was not the nice neighborhood it is now, and we were quite poor, as I wrote in my biography of him, DREAMER OF DUNE. I have never attended a class reunion, but I thought that some of my classmates from 1962-1964 might be interested in learning what I’ve been doing. I remember many of them, and it was a great experience for me at Lowell. Over the years, I have published more than 40 books, most of them science fiction novels. Many have reached the New York Times bestseller list, and I have been published in several languages around the world. In my life, I’ve had 3 great teachers . . . Dennis Rauchman, Frank Herbert [who helped me with my writing], and Jan Herbert [who taught me what is truly important in life.] ANDREW BERNHARD: Down to one eye. Life without depth perception is challenging at best. Backyard workshop is almost like sanctuary. I refinish and restore old furniture I find at yard sales, then sell it off my front yard or on Craigslist. Read lots, history mostly, and have napping in my big chair down to a science. No-one can tell me 70 isn’t old, I live with chronic pain and usually feel every minute of it. But I do not complain. I live at one speed and retirement suits me just fine. Stay warm, people. CHRISTINE BERNSTEIN RODRIGUEZ: In May, I celebrated my 70th birthday at Disneyland. Then on September 2, my husband Joe (Balboa F’61) and I celebrated our 50th anniversary at Jack’s San Mateo with 12 family members, including our granddaughter Aulani who was our hostess. It was 102 degrees that day, the hottest September 2 on record in San Francisco!

CHRISTINE WEINSTEIN: Spurred by my brother residing in northern Sulawesi, this spring, my husband (Dave) and I visited five of Indonesia’s more than 17,000 islands. In Kalimantan (the Indonesian part of Borneo), we saw orangutans in the wild and were blessed by a Dayak village elder. In Sulawesi, we were guided for a few days through the jungle at Tangkoko Nature Reserve where we saw the world’s smallest monkey, the nocturnal Tarsius tarsier; and wandered by troops of Black Crested Macaques. A flock of Hornbills

soared overhead. Amongst the hundreds (if not thousands) of tropical fish and a few sea turtles in the Bunaken National Marine Park, we snorkeled for days. In Urdu, Bali, we joined the hordes of tourists to admire the Hindu culture. We luxuriated at Nikoi Island for a few days before heading home by way of Singapore. Ah, if only the direct flight from San Francisco to Singapore wasn’t almost 17 hours.

Keeping in-touch with fellow alumni is special as we are so connected from the Lowell experience. I promise to get in touch with a few alumni that I lost touch with namely Alane Martens Gilbrech and Connie Benesch Bennett. OLSON LEE: After working for the City for 27 years, I recently retired as Director of the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development. It has been an enjoyable but challenging run to create affordable housing in the nation’s most expensive housing market. My last major projects included a transformation of 3,500 units of existing public housing to a new operating model as private affordable housing and the demolition and rebuild of even more distressed family public housing sites in the southeast part of the City. It is obvious that there is much more to do to preserve and build new affordable housing but after 20,000+ units, I leave it for another graduate of Lowell to take that challenge on. Best wishes to all. KARIN FREID BAIRD: Hi from Novato. Retired from teaching French at Novato High and am tutoring locally. A Final Tribute to Paul Lucey By Helen Louie Wax ’66 Paul Lucey’s funeral (Interment) took place on August 21, 2017 at 2:30 P.M., Arlington National Cemetery. Friends and family from all over the U.S. gathered to bid farewell to Paul. Paul received a full military honors funeral due to his rank as Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. Arlington is the only cemetery in the world that offers a full military honors funeral for officers and warrant officers. A full honors service consists of a procession to the gravesite with

a horse drawn caisson, a marching band, a marching escort of troops and a four man color guard. The caparisoned (riderless) horse is used only for Army and Marine Colonels and above. This horse was used at Paul Lucey’s funeral. The entire contingent remained throughout the entire ceremony. The chaplain joined the procession as well, in front of the caisson, and behind the escort, band, and color guard. Once at the gravesite, the body bearers carried the flag draped casket to the grave and held the flag over the casket while the chaplain spoke. The band played while the casket was taken to the grave and also while the flag was

being folded. Following the committal service, the firing party was called to attention and fired a three rifle volley. The bugler played taps, and the body bearers folded the flag which was presented to Gloria Lucey Vollmers ’69 (Paul’s daughter). It was a very beautiful farewell ceremony to a man who honorably served our country, was a great educator and administrator at Lowell, and upon retirement was the first executive director/ historian/ archivist/ newsletter editor of the Lowell Alumni Association for many years. If you visit Arlington National Cemetery, Colonel Paul Lucey is buried in Section 71, Grave 236.
