President’s Message By Lisa Coughlin Clay ’74

T

he Lowell Alumni Association is happy to welcome our new Executive Director, Terence Abad. He succeeds Paul Lucey, who served as the Association’s Executive Director from 1984 to July 2008. Paul is living with his family in Maine, and participated in the September Board of Directors meeting via conference call. Terry has been actively involved with the Alumni Association for many years, serving as a member of the Board of Directors, chair of the Board’s Grant committee, and, most recently, as our Director of Alumni Relations and Development. One of the most important resources that the Alumni Association provides to Lowell and its students is the annual scholarship program. In May 2008, we awarded scholarships in the total amount of more than $50,000 to twenty-nine graduating seniors. The recipients are pursuing their studies at such diverse universities as Harvard, Georgetown, Stanford and several different University of California campuses. Scholarships are awarded to students who excel in a particular discipline, such as the performing arts, journalism, or chemistry, or an athletic endeavor. These scholarships were often established in memory of an alumnus, or by grateful students seeking to honor a beloved former teacher. We are proud to provide financial assistance to these outstanding graduates as they enter college, and encourage them to remember

the contribution their Lowell education has made to their future success. The Lowell Alumni Association continually seeks to enhance our efforts to best serve Lowell and its current students. To that end, we are actively encouraging gifts to support existing students and on-going Lowell programs, such as gifts to specific academic departments. Generous alums have given designated contributions to the science and architecture programs in recent years. We are grateful for the continuing support of alumni in our efforts to maintain the academic excellence at Lowell that we were all privileged to experience. On behalf of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, I send my best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.

FALL 2008

s the pessimist once observed, every silver lining has a dark cloud — an apt metaphor for the current status of Lowell’s budget for the current school year. Given projections of a budget gap of as much as $1 million for the 2008-2009 academic year, the Lowell Alumni Association and Lowell PTSA joined forces earlier this year to pledge a combined total of $500,000 for critical staffing needs. During the summer, a number of factors combined to shrink the size of Lowell’s budget shortfall, most notably the transfer of more than $15 million of rainy day funds from the City of San Francisco to the San Francisco Unified School District. As a result, the cost to the LAA and PTSA of supplementing the site budget in order to maintain the traditional number of classroom teachers, counselors, librarians and support staff came in at just under $250,000 and even allows us to restore a counselor position that was cut from the site budget two years ago, bringing the total counseling staff to nine. But this silver lining has managed to find its dark cloud. The slowing California economy has recently prompted Governor Schwarzenegger to recommend mid-year budget cuts, including billions of dollars in reductions to funding for public schools. With a special legislative session about to convene at the time of this writing, there is no way to predict the possible impact of such cuts on Lowell or the San Francisco school district, but we need your support and that of thousands of other Lowell alumni, parents and friends to be prepared for any additional budget reduction. With our Annual Fund Campaign now

underway, you will soon receive a special request for your most generous support for all of the important programs administered by the Lowell Alumni Association. Our grants program, which provides more than $60,000 each year to meet special needs in support of Lowell students and faculty — from marine science field trips to computers and speech and debate team tournament entry fees — was temporarily suspended earlier this year as we braced for a possible $1 million budget gap. Due to the positive developments over the summer, the LAA’s board of directors recently voted to resume our grants program, but our ability to follow through on that commitment is now threatened by the specter of mid-year state budget cuts, thus making it more important than ever that alumni and other friends do what they can to support our Annual Fund Campaign. Your support allow us to continue our grants program while also preparing to address the additional budget cuts we know are on their way. Finally, alumni support will be critical as we prepare for what promises to be a much larger budget deficit for the 2009-2010 school year. With rainy day funding from the city unavailable, we will need to make up for the lack of those funds as well as for whatever impact additional state budget cuts have on Lowell. Please consider making the most generous donation possible when you receive your Annual Fund Campaign letter. More than 2,700 current students and nearly 200 faculty and staff will benefit from your generosity! Donations to the Lowell Alumni Association can also be made online with your major credit card by visiting www. lowellalumni.org/donate

Alumni Shine at Commencement Whether they had originally graduated from the Opera House, Civic Auditorium or another venue, nearly two dozen Lowell alumni from several different classes gathered this past June to join members of the Lowell class of 2008 for commencement exercises at the Cow Palace (or does it sound better to use the original name — California Livestock Pavilion?). Arriving in the early morning from throughout the Bay Area, alumni participants shared stories and renewed old friendships while donning cap and gown and commemorative Lowell medallions. When the time came to begin the commencement procession, the alumni contingent followed the senior class and received a resounding ovation as they held high placards announcing their year of graduation. Not surprisingly, the loudest cheers were for alumna Valeska Rantz ’33 and for the five members of the class of ’38 (Betty White Wallace, Glennette Noreen, Chatham Forbes, Charles Calhan and Christine Del Prete). Jeanne Tobin Bush represented the class of ’58 while the 1968 group included Wendy Drefke Shinbori, Richard Chong, Sandra Hsu, Jannie Fan Wong, Richard Mitra, May Choi and Mimi Pichey. Quite fittingly, Ms. Pichey, a recipient of the Karpenstein Award for Academic Excellence 40 years ago, presented the Karpenstein Award to the 2008 graduates who earned

the highest grade point average. From the class of 1978, we had Emily Murase, Lawrence Lahl, Roy Abendroth and Dale Domino. Afterwards, several of the alumni shared lunch at Westlake Joe’s, joined by LAA Executive Director Paul Lucey and Development Director Terry Abad. Attention graduates from 1934, 1939, 1949, 1959, 1969, 1979, 1984, 1989 and 1999 — you are cordially invited to participate in Lowell’s 2009 commencement exercises next June. Contact the LAA for more information.

Although the most famous member of the class of ’38, Carol Channing, wasn’t able to attend, one of her classmates cleverly inserted her image into this group photo.

R eunion R eports Classes of January & June 1940 On Saturday, August 16, the Lowell classes of ’40 met for a mini-reunion at Sinbad’s restaurant, next to the Ferry Building. We tried something new: we had an announcement in the alumni newsletter asking interested classmates to call the restaurant directly, make their own reservation, order from the menu and pay their own check. We had about 30 attendees and it was certainly easier than the big mailings Bob and I used to send with forms to return with menu choices and a check; we put in many, many hours doing that for previous reunions. We have a reservation for Saturday, August 15, 2009, for the next luncheon. We will have another story and invitation in the next issue.

—Frances Hubbard Curley ’40

Classes of January & June 1943 It was 65 years ago last June that we marched across the stage at the Opera House to receive our Lowell diplomas. It was a momentous event in our young lives, and on that day we never dreamed that anyone could possibly live long enough to be around 65 years later. But this past summer, 81 hardy souls (56 class members and 25 guests) met in the dining room of the Olympic Club Lakeside, with a good number of them pausing long enough at the entrance to buy beverage tickets. This, of course, added to the general enthusiasm. My class looked aged, with lots of white hair and a few with halting steps. Before long, the years fell away and we were back in school and kids again. We shared Lowell memories, from Miss Peckham’s history class and Miss Morrin’s poetry class to standing in line to register for biology with Mr. Kast, a brilliant and entertaining teacher. It was great fun to be with people who shared our superb learning experiences at Lowell. After lunch, Bob Busse roamed the room with a microphone so that each Lowellite could recount to his classmates an outstanding memory. Most spoke of favorite teachers. Dick Saltzman added to the pleasure of the day by playing Lowell songs on the grand piano. We were honored to have Lowell Principal Andy Ishibashi on hand to say a few words. And Alan Orr did a great job leading the reunion committee. Reunions are a time for remembering, reminiscing and rejoicing, both at the event itself and long after. Our 65th was such a joy that I am already looking forward to the 70th — and I plan to be there.

Classes of January & June 1963 About 110 members and guests from the classes of January and June 1963 celebrated their 45-year reunion on Saturday, October 4th on a balmy fall evening at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club in North Beach. We had classmates from all over the Bay Area, Northern and Southern California, Washington, Arizona, and even Hawaii. Some attendees are reunion regulars, meeting cheerfully every five years. Some classmates had a great time attending their first reunion since 1963! We were honored to have five former teachers join us: Mr. Dahl, Mr. Ehrman, Mr. Halbasch, Mr. Linder and Ms. Prato. The Reunion Committee had been planning this event since August, 2007. The Committee was chaired by Allan Gold with enthusiastic and hard working members Marilyn Noda Swartz, Julie Winship Fowlkes, Paul Rosenberg, Barbara Kontis Karvelis, Denise Appel Freinkel, Helen Morgan Bohl, David Ravinsky, Geoff Shashkan, Melton Delaney, Seth Samuels, Gary Joe, George Benetatos, Gimmy Park Li, Gwen Jew Chan (former Superintendent of SF Schools!) and Jennie Horn. We are contemplating having a joint 65th birthday celebration in 2010-11, but for sure will have a fabulous 50th reunion in 2013! Don’t miss it!

Class of June 1948 The class of June 1948 celebrated in grand style last June at the Basque Cultural Center in South San Francisco. Some 70 classmates and guests assembled for lunch and reminiscing. The committee thought this was to be our last ever reunion, but the attendees enjoyed themselves to the extent that they had to be “pushed out the door” when the event was to be over — all of them saying that “we have to do this again. Why wait 5 years?” What say you, Marv Hoffman — are we up to it again?

—Lowell ’48 Reunion Committee

And this was just the Hoover crowd at the ’72/’73 reunion!

Classes of January & June 1973 The 35-year reunion for the classes of Fall ’72 and Spring ’73 was held September 13th at the Lafayette Reservoir. The reunion committee decided to hold a picnic this time around. The weather couldn’t have been any nicer and the catered BBQ feast was more than enough to feed the sizeable crowd that showed up. Those who attended the gala event were treated to what seemed to be an endless amount of good times and memories. Yearbooks and reunion memory books were made available by classmates to reminisce about the old days. There wasn’t enough time to remember all that we wanted to share, so we are all looking forward to the 40th in 2013 to continue the merriment!

Classes of January & June 1958

The class of ’83 had a fun-filled evening on August 9, 2008 in honor of their 25-year reunion. The Presidio Golf Club was a perfectly cozy setting for this elegant affair. The dedicated organizing committee (Yvonne Eipper-Kalber, Lisa Fung, Lucy Fong-Lee, Shari Jensen-Pietz, SharonChar-Tabar, Lori Tisell-Graham and Sylvia Quinteros) saw to it that this special event was a first-class party. With superb food, exciting music, and drinks flowing at the open bar it was easy to enjoy this night full of nostalgia, conversation, laughs, and dancing. Memories were enhanced with professional keepsake photos and some lucky classmates even went home with special prizes graciously donated by the Lowell Alumni Association and other generous donors. Thank you to all of the 1983 classmates who attended and to the 1982 classmates who also responded to the invitation and came out to enjoy this wonderful night.

—Lowell ’83 Reunion Committee

The San Francisco weather was magnificent for our 50-year reunion weekend on September 27-28. Many of us gathered Friday night at Caesar’s Restaurant at the Wharf for an informal get together of cocktails and dinner. It was great seeing old friends and having a few laughs. A balmy Saturday night found us at the Sir Francis Drake’s Empire Room for cocktails and dinner. 188 of the finest showed up and enjoyed swapping stories, catching up on each others’ lives and shaking a leg to some great tunes! All in all, a very successful weekend! Thanks to a marvelous reunion committee: chairperson Lee Peaches Hansen Nelson, Diane Peterson Sibley, Lenore Person Weissenberger, Carol Ellison Mertens, Bobby John Guillory, Sue Honig Weinstein, Bill Reid, George Hansen and Ralph Gilman.

Fall 2008

New Theater Dedicated in Memory of Steve Silver ’62 Alumni joined current students, faculty and other Lowell friends on September 16th for the formal and festive dedication of the new Steve Silver Theater. The event, titled “A Celebration of the Past and Present,” included a reception, ceremonial ribboncutting, student performances and a rousing performance of the song “San Francisco” by a cast member from “Steve Silver’s Beach Blanket Babylon,” the longest-running musical revue in history. Following the ribbon-cutting by Principal Andy Ishibashi, assisted by LAA President Lisa Clay and others, event hosts Teresa Collins Bookwalter, Lowell’s Visual and Peforming Arts (VPA) department head, and Thomas Drain, retired VPA faculty member, welcomed a standing room only crowd to the newly-renovated space. The former room 110 has seen service as a resource center for the English department and, more recently, as a classroom. But as part of the most recent construction project at

Lowell, meant to improve access for the disabled, the room was completely transformed into an intimate black box theater with seating for 70. While local and state school bonds funded most of the project, private funding from the Steve Silver Foundation and the Lowell Alumni Association has been critical to completing the project by purchasing curtains as well as sound and lighting equipment. Creation of this new performance space helps to take pressure off of the perpetually overbooked Carol Channing Theater by hosting rehearsals and smaller events in addition to drama classes during the school day. Many thanks to the thousands of generous LAA supporters who helped make this exciting project possible and special thanks to former Assistant Principal Peter VanCourt for his vision and leadership! We hope you will consider attending a future performance in the Steve Silver Theater.

Arts & Humanities Wall of Fame Welcomes New Honorees In conjunction with the Steve Silver Theater dedication event, a newly-revitalized and expanded Arts and Humanities Wall of Fame was unveiled in the Carol Channing Theater. LAA board member Claudia Wolf Eshoo ’67 directed the complete overhaul of the original Wall of Fame, with assistance from Pat Pivnick Levin ’67 and generous funding provided by the Lowell class of 1967 as part of a class gift made in connection with their recent 40-year reunion. 2008 Grads Awarded Over $50,000 in LAA Scholarships Continuing one of the Lowell Alumni Association’s finest traditions, more than two dozen graduating seniors were selected this past May to share more than $50,000 in alumni scholarships. These students are now studying in Massachusetts, New York, Washington, D.C. and California in a variety of fields. Selected on the basis of various factors, including service to Lowell, academic achievement, financial need and, in some cases, special requirements identified by scholarship fund donors, all of this year’s applicants received personal interviews with the scholarship committee, chaired again this year by Wendy Drefke Shinbori ’68. The Lowell Alumni Association manages scholarship endowment funds with a market value of approximately $1.5 million. Scholarships awarded this year range in amount from $300 to just over $7,000, depending upon the size of the individual scholarship fund, with most awards amounting to $1,000 to $2,000. Three new scholarships were awarded this year, thanks to generous donations from Lowell alumni and friends: • Elena Catelli Scholarship — Ms. Catelli, beloved former Lowell counselor and teacher, established a perpetual scholarship endowment designated to assist outstanding students in Lowell’s Italian language program. • Louis Leithold Memorial Scholarship – Thanks to a bequest from the estate of Louis Leithold ’42, a high school math teacher and author of a best-selling calculus textbook, this perpetual scholarship is to be awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding mathematical ability or who plan to major in mathematics. • Classes of ’49 Scholarship – Audrey Sterling Shapiro ’49 made this scholarship possible by

generously hosting a very special class reunion last year at her winery, thus making it possible for 100% of the event proceeds to be used to establish this fund. At the annual scholarship reception, held May 29th in the Lowell library, the Lowell Alumni Association hosted the scholarship recipients and their families, along with some of the donors who have made these scholarships possible. Wendy Shinbori added her special touch to the event by asking some of the scholarship recipients to demonstrate special talents, from a capella singing to debate. Best wishes to all our 2008 scholarship recipients!

Caught in the Headlines By Terence Abad ’76 Other Election News: Despite what the cable news channels may be telling us, there were other offices involved in the November election — and at least three Lowell alumnae were candidates here in the Bay Area. Joan Tomaich Buchanan ’70, long-time San Ramon school board member, was elected to the California Assembly from the 15th district. Emily Murase ’83, LAA director and Executive Director of the Commission on the Status of Women for the city and county of San Francisco, ran a strong campaign for the SF Board of Education (receiving more than 50,000 votes) but fell short of winning a seat. She promises to run again in 2010, so keep your eye out for her. And Lynette Sweet ’77 easily won re-election to the BART board, where she represents parts of San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa counties. One of Ms. Sweet’s fellow BART board members is James Fang ’79. Legal Eagles: Next time you’re at SFO, look around to see the progress on the boarding area in Terminal 2 that is undergoing renovation to become the Coblentz Concourse, in honor of lawyer William Coblentz ’40, one of the founders of the San Francisco International Airport’s Airport Commission… California Appellate Court Justice Stuart Pollack ’55 was honored earlier this month by the Hebrew Free Loan Association of San Francisco, a group providing interest-free loans to Jewish residents of Northern California in financial need. Justice Pollak and his wife, Lee Labe Pollak ’56, have been involved with the HFLA for nearly three decades. L’Chaim! A Couple of Real Giants: Great to see that Larry Baer ’75 has been chosen to take over as president of the San Francisco Giants, after 16 very successful years as second in command to Peter Magowan. Larry was spotted at Lowell last month with his 8th-grader son as they visited campus with hundreds of other prospective students…and not-so-good news out of Modesto, where the legendary Carol Channing ’38 took a bad fall at her home, sustaining a broken hip and left femur and forcing her to cancel a planned appearance at SF’s Herbst Theater. Reliable sources claim that this is the first time in her storied career that Dr. Channing has ever had to miss a performance, but she promises to soon be back to her good work promoting arts in the schools throughout California and the nation. Lowell friends who want to send best wishes to Carol can send a message to the LAA that we will promptly forward. Get well soon, Dolly! Sad, but Important, Memories: Be sure to check out a recent article that Duffy Jennings ’65 contributed to the SF Chronicle (search www.sfgate. com), recounting the tragic events of November 27, 1978 as he covered the George Moscone and Harvey Milk assassinations for the Chronicle. Big Stars on the Small Screen: Seems like you can’t flip channels without running into Lowell alumni these days…Benjamin Bratt ’82 has been enjoying deserved success with his new series, “The Cleaner”, on A&E. Word is that the series has been picked up for a second season…and relative newcomer Jamie Chung ’01 starred in the recent ABC Family network miniseries “Samurai Girl”, set in San Francisco. Jamie first hit TV as a cast member on MTV’s “Real World: San Diego” and is currently working on a couple of movies expected to be released next year…and for a show that you definitely won’t see on ABC Family, check out VH1’s “The Cho Show”, starring Margaret Cho ’87. As will come as no surprise to her many fans, the show gives her free rein to showcase what LA Weekly describes as her “brilliantly dirty and observationally astute comedy mind.”

Lowell Alumna Completes Fifth Running Around the World, Consecutive Ironman Triathlon First Person:

26.2 Miles at a Time By Michael Brandt ’60 Having just completed my 80th marathon in San Francisco on August 3, 2008, I am toying with the idea of running marathons in all 50 states as I work toward my overall goal of 100 marathons. I have run marathons on all seven continents and 11 different countries — yes, Antarctica has a marathon and I am a member of the Seven Continents Club. As of this writing, only 224 runners worldwide have completed a marathon on every continent, an accomplishment in itself. I started running around 1980 to maintain my physical fitness level for mountain climbing. Between 1980 and 1997 I climbed on all seven continents including such notables as Mounts Everest, McKinley and Kilimanjaro. My extremeophile running adventures, much to the chagråin of my wife, have taken me to the four corners of the world, including the Great Wall of China, the mud and glaciers of Antarctica, Baffin Island (900 miles north of the Arctic Circle), around Australia, running past the Moai’s guardians of Easter Island, through the streets of London, Tiananmen and Red Squares, the Sea of Galilee, the Tibetan Plateau, the African savannah, above the clouds in the rarefied air of the Andes Mountains to elevations of 13, 800’ and ending at the famed Incan city of Machu Picchu and, finally, running 35 miles from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean at the tip of South Africa. I owe special thanks to my Lowell teacher, Jack Anderson (World History class in 1957), for planting the seed for global exploration and knowledge and making a significant impact on my life for over 50 years. Some 50 countries later, I am still eager to learn about other cultures, hidden places and view the world through the eyes of others. On the horizon are the Lake Tahoe Triple marathon (three marathons in three

Michael Brandt takes a short break just past the 26-mile mark of the 36-mile “Run to the Sun” in Maui this past March. The race starts at sea level (at 4:30 a.m.!) and ends at the 10,000-foot summit of the dormant Haleakala volcano. days; September 2008) and the Bermuda Triangle Challenge (a one mile run, 10K and a marathon over three days) in Hamilton, Bermuda in January 2009. My long-term goal is to complete a 5K run when I am 100 years old in November 2041! I live with my wife Audrey in El Dorado Hills, California. Our youngest daughter Kim, a Vassar College graduate, is in her final year of law school at the University of Oregon. While not running, I work in the Law Department for Blue Shield of California and freelance write adventure articles.

On October 11, 2008, Katherine Donovan (maiden name: Kathy Macdonald, class of Fall, 1971) finished her fifth Hawaii Ironman World Triathlon Championship, this time competing in the 50-54 age-group division. Born and raised in San Francisco, Katherine earned her fifth-in-a-row medal for finishing the grueling 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile marathon combo known as the “Ironman.” Beginning her triathlon career at the age of 50, Donovan qualified for the world championship in her very first attempt in 2004, and she hasn’t looked back. This year’s qualifying event, the Honu Half Ironman Triathlon on the Big Island of Hawaii was particularly rewarding for her as she won the last Ironman slot, despite being the oldest woman in a highly-competitive age group of fine athletes. Interested individuals can watch an online video of Katherine Donovan crossing the finish line by logging on to www. Ironmanlive.com. Go to “events” – “ironman series” and then to “Ford Ironman World Championship”, then to “race results”, then to “2008 Athlete Tracker.” Enter her full name or her race #1738 and click on the gold-and-blue bar labeled “Watch Me Finish.”

Student Filmmaker Wins National Award While cutting class at Lowell two years ago, Nick Parker’07 struck up a conversation with substitute teacher Tay McArthur and asked him, “Do you have a story that will inspire me?” Little did he expect that McArthur’s response would lead to the creation of a short film that would be honored with the National Education Association’s Human and Civil Rights Award. The documentary tells the story of a group of Oakland Tech High School students who spent four years in the late 1970s gathering support for legislation recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday as a California state holiday.

Please accept the attached donation to the Lowell Alumni Association in the name of Lowell’s Class of 1977. In addition to our regular alumni donations, our classmates had an additional collection taken at our 30-year reunion last November. Although we do not have a specific request for the use of these funds, we ask that they be earmarked for the direct benefit of student organizations, programs or activities. Thank you for overseeing this. Go Cardinals! Sincerely, Jeffrey S. Jang Class of ’77 Reunion Committee [Editor’s Note — Thanks to the class of ’77 reunion committee for their generous donation of $1,000!] Dear Lowell Alumni Association,

Parker, who is now planning a career as a documentary filmmaker, worked with Jazmin Jones, a high school student from Fremont, to create the six-minute film called “The Apollos” that was screened earlier this year in Washington, D.C., before an audience of 3,000. As Nick told the San Francisco Chronicle, “I got to see firsthand how our work can impact other people, which was cool because their work [referring to the Oakland Tech students in the ’70s] had an impact on us.” To view “The Apollos” online, visit links.sfgate.com/ZEEK

On Wednesday, November 12th, the Celtic music duo of Kim McKee and Ken Willson performed at Lowell High School. I would like to personally thank the Lowell Alumni Association for funding this visit. This experience has not only opened windows to new branches of music, but also introduced several instruments many Lowell music students never knew existed such as the dulcimer. The duo performed a phenomenal form of Celtic music with a very distinct bluegrass influence. At the end of the assembly, the students actually had the chance to play a few of the instruments themselves. Very rarely will students

have the opportunity to listen to new forms and styles of music on unfamiliar instruments. This presentation was entertaining, educational and inspirational in getting students to expand their horizons and try new instruments. Thank you again for funding this great performance and I hope that you will continue bringing them back every year. Yours, Thomas Tu, Class of 2010 (from Lowell High School’s Advanced Orchestra) [Editor’s Note — This special musical performance was funded by the Bob Anino Music Endowment Fund, part of the continuing legacy established by the great Mr. Anino.] Dear Lowell Alumni Association, I would like to express my surprise, joy, and gratitude upon receiving the Ivan Barker Math Award. Not only was I unaware of its existence, but I did not know there were any Lowell math awards, nor would I have expected to receive any, for there are many excellent Lowell math students; however, many do not choose to spend their free time in math competitions. (I usually enter as many as I can, especially if they get me out of English or History class.) Mostly, I would like to thank the Lowell Alumni Association and the late Mr. Ivan Barker, whom I unfortunately never met, for their generosity. Thank you, Jessica Noss

A nnual R eport To Donors Lowell alumni and friends again showed their strong support for current students in 2007 with nearly $450,000 in donations that have been put to good use in ways that touch nearly every student. From the baseball team to the Hebrew language program and from science lab equipment to theater lighting, recent donations to the Lowell Alumni Association have had a direct impact by improving the Lowell experience both in and outside of the classroom, as described in greater detail below.

Critical Staffing Needs — $100,000 In what has become the alumni association’s most important initiative, due to the continuing state budget crisis, $100,000 was earmarked to pay for additional teachers and counselors, above and beyond what is possible with the funds allocated by the school district. In partnership with the Lowell PTSA, more than $300,000 was used to hire five additional staff members for the 2007-2008 school year, helping to reduce class sizes and counselor caseloads, all of which helps to improve student experiences at Lowell.

Grants Program — $60,000 Our grants program supplements the school site budget by giving faculty members and coaches the opportunity to apply for alumni funds for specific programs and projects that enhance the Lowell expe-

rience. 2007 grants included continuing funding for the speech and debate program; uniforms for the girls basketball team; a wrestling mat; partial funding for a trip by the baseball team; Advanced Placement exam fee subsidies for low-income students; computers and related equipment for the journalism program; support for the Academic Decathlon team; library furniture; transportation for a marine science field trip; transportation in support of the drama program; skirts for the dance program; and a commedia dell’arte consultant who worked with drama students.

Scholarships — $51,000 With a total scholarship endowment of $1.5 million, the Lowell Alumni Association awards more than two dozen college scholarships annually to graduating seniors. In 2007, we received more than $125,000 in new scholarship donations, enabling us to benefit more students in future years.

Restricted Gifts — $56,000 Some of our generous donors have decided to designate specific uses for their donations and the Lowell Alumni Association takes very seriously its responsibility to spend these funds in accordance with the donors’ wishes. In 2007, the Hebrew language program was entirely funded with a $25,000 restricted grant from the Richard & Rhoda Goldman Fund, enabling Lowell to offer two sections of Hebrew, thereby maintaining our overall offering of nine world languages. Other restricted gifts purchased computers for the journalism

and yearbook programs; the annual visit by actors from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival; science lab equipment; benches donated by the class of 1975; travel costs for the track and field team; and entry fees for the speech and debate team.

Highest Total Giving

Annual Fund Campaign Projects — $71,000 Thanks to prior year donations, several designated projects were completed in 2007, benefiting the science, math and English programs. In science, alumni funds purchased $18,000 of computers and lab equipment for physics classes; an $18,000 mobile computer lab to be shared throughout the department; $4,000 in chemistry lab equipment and supplies; $5,500 for lab furniture; and $8,000 in additional computer equipment and supplies. Alumni donations also provided $10,000 to allow for the continuation of the California Poets in the Schools program at Lowell. Our resident poet, Susan Terence, has been working with Lowell freshmen for the past several years, helping them to unleash their creativity and win numerous honors. The math department used $5,000 for additional classroom technology, textbooks and math competition entry fees. Based upon donations received late in 2007, a total of $40,000 has been earmarked to fund priority projects in the library and Visual and Performing Arts department. We expect to provide a full report on how those funds have been utilized in an upcoming newsletter.

FRANCES HODES HAGAN informs “Still live at same address as when I went to Lowell. In fact, I’ve lived here since 1912. My father Samuel Hodes ’04 graduated from Lowell. He became a civil engineer and received a gold medal from the city for his work on Twin Peaks Tunnel.”

1933

Jun & Dec

MEL COHN responds to our last newsletter with a “hello back to [December ’33 classmate] George Blackmore whom I haven’t seen in 75 years. Also, if my memory isn’t too clouded with age, I think that Don Dassonville and I went to Alamo grammar school together.”

1937

Jan & Jun & Dec

IRVIN M. ROTH shares “My wife, Maureen (a British War Bride) and I will celebrate the 60th anniversary of our wedding this June 2008. I retired in 1993 after 34 years teaching at Foothill College as a Professor of History and Chairman of the Social Science Division.” JANET BALL HAYWARD informs “After our 65 years of happily married life, my husband Bill passed away in May of 2008. We were blessed with 3 children, 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren – so life goes on. I enjoy the alumni news and articles. Keep it up!” ROBERT ROBACK posts “Greetings to all my classmates and friends from class of June 1937. I am a retired Orthopedic Surgeon living in Tempe, Arizona. I would like to know if there is any information regarding Philip N. Schmidt, who was Editor of The Lowell in 1937. He practiced maritime law in San Francisco after WWII, and lived in San Mateo. His son is named Matt Schmidt. Thanks.”

1943

Jan & Jun

PAUL BUCHNER reports “Everything is just fine here in the foothills.” In early June, two Lowell ’43classmates met for the first time in 65 years…at lunch on a Volga river cruise in Russia! DR. ORLANDO “JOE” JOYCE and OLIVE “ELSI” BLACKLEY LEVI have certainly done their share of traveling since leaving Lowell. Joe served in World War II before attending medical school and now lives with his wife Marleen in Cameron Park, California. Elsi spent 30 years in Europe working for the U.S. government before returning stateside. In 1999, she met Walter Levi in Istanbul and two years later, in Warsaw, he proposed. They married in New York City and now split their time between New York and Las Vegas.

Feb & Jun

RAFAEL PISCITELLI KASTL updates “Recently moved to a condo across from AT&T Giants’ Ballpark and we’ve become avid baseball fans. That plus train travel keeps us occupied. Always look forward to LAA Newsletter — a great publication.”

1945

Feb & Jun

ELLEN MAGNIN NEWMAN co-chaired the “Hearts In San Francisco” project to benefit San Francisco General Hospital. She is now working on San Francisco General Hospital’s bond issue campaign. ROBERT GOMPERTS announces “Just celebrated 60th wedding anniversary with four generations! Spent summer in Mt. View, Ca. Helping care for grandchildren.”

NAOMI WELFIELD KABAKOV is “now living in a senior residence center. It is quite lovely and meets my needs for activities and companionship. My daughters, nieces, nephews and grandchildren visit often. I continue to be grateful for my education — a Lowell grad and then UC Berkeley!”

1939

1946

TRUDE KARP INGRAM writes “I was so happy to learn that a 70th Reunion is being planned for June 13th 2009 – with details forthcoming. I hope all you graduates will come. It’s hard to believe that next year will be 70 years since we graduated!”

1941

Jan & Jun

EUGENIA NIKONENKO BAILEY details “Since the Class of 1941 has not had a reunion since June of 1991, I Decided to attend a reunion close to 1941 and that was the Class of 1940 at Sinbad’s on August 16, 2008. A great time was had by all!” She continues “An invitation to all to see the Carol Channing ’38 Exhibition. ‘Hello Carol! A Celebration of Carol Channing’ is at the Museum of Performance and Design (formerly PALM) at 401 Van Ness Ave.”

1942

Jan & Jun

FLORENCE HOUSTON VERGARI reminisces “What wonderful memories of Hayes & Masonic ‘flood’ my mind. Still seeing more of this planet – traveling to the places we planned to see after our children left the nest. All three are UC and more grads. I enjoy reading the newsletter.” PARK LOUGHLIN relates “Hello Paul. Hope all is well – the Presidio misses you!” JOSEPH CROWLEY shares “I see and go out very often with William ‘Bill’ Calhoun ’44. Bill was on Lowelll’s championship 1944 basketball team and played in the NBA for eight years and was a starter on one NBA championship team.”

Jan & Jun

PATRICIA REECE sends greetings from San Diego: “I continue to enjoy living here in the city where I was born. This year at Spring Break, my daughter, two granddaughters and I went to SF for shopping and sight-seeing. What fun to be back in the City again! We were blessed with lovely weather so we walked almost everywhere — to Chinatown, the Ferry Building, down the most crooked Lombard Street and into what must have been every store catering to young shoppers so the girls could try on and buy clothes — each store seemed to feel that there music must be at top volume to make the shopping experience complete! Upon leaving we drove across the Golden Gate Bridge and on to Sausalito — what a lovely town for shopping and just sitting by the water and enjoying the scenery.”

1948

LAWRENCE & CAROLYN BRETT GRAUBART send Mr. Paul Lucey “Hopefully your exquisite column will still be a feature from the East Coast. Caroline and I can’t begin to express our gratitude for knowing you and your fabulous history. You will be sorely missed, it goes without saying. What a guy! Semper Fi and Gung Ho!

1949

EDWARD GARZERO expresses “I was sad to hear of Anthony Cuevas’s passing. We entered freshman class at the same time, and I remember him as an excellent student. Although we live in on the other coast, we ran into Tony on one of our visits to the city and were delighted to touch base with such a fine friend. I’m grateful to have known him and send my heartfelt condolences to his wife, Maria and their family.”

Jun

I was eighteen in December of 1947, detesting much I joined the Marine Corps in January of 1948 and lost my leg in Korea during August of 1950. Marine Corps retired me in July of 1951, got married August, 1953 and taught from 1959 to 1996. My wife died June, 2007. We had two daughters and two sons, and now have four grandsons. I’ve had a wonderful life and no regrets. My lackluster early association with Lowell surely benefited me. Here, in Northern California, Lowell grads are placed on a pedestal. I’ve been led to believe there is reverence for those granted the privilege of attending Lowell. Earlier Dr. Martin introduced me to an intern from San Francisco. The intern, after hearing the two of us were from Lowell said, ‘Gee, you both must be smart!’ Of course, I told her Dr. Martin was the smart one, not me. Kind of quaint the two of us meeting this way?”

Jan & Jun

DIANA ANSON MORASCH suggests “We were fortunate to have been born into ‘The Greatest Generation’ in the greatest country in the world! Yes, we were lucky, but with that luck comes a great responsibility. Take your vitamins and help to ‘stay the course’ for our country!” JIM LYON tells “I am a retired, slightly inconvenienced, Marine. Occasionally I see a Veteran Administration podiatrist, Dr. Sandra Jackson Martin ’62. She is a vivacious and witty lady. There’s always a sparkle in her eye and laughter in her demeanor. A scheduled meeting with her expertise is something to look forward to. We had earlier discovered that both Doctor Martin and myself had attended Lowell. She graduated in 1962 and I thought I had in 1948.

Jan & Jun

BARBARA FREEMAN mails “I’m keeping busy cruising (at least twice a year) and volunteering at the De Young and Legion of Honor. I am also a docent at the California Academy of Sciences and eagerly awaiting the opening of the New Academy in September. Hope to see old friends at our 60th Reunion.” DONNA PARRISH HONEY reports “We are fine, still traveling when we can. Last of our grandchildren just graduated from high school. Good to hear from Lowell friends and remember old memories.”

Correction — In the last newsletter, we misidentified the alumnus physician whose good work led to a $60 million donation to the USC/Norris Cancer Center. He is Don Feinstein ’50, a professor of medicine at the University of Southern California. We apologize for our error. JOHN ‘JACK’ RISING updates “Just returned from Machu Picchu and Galapagos …AMAZING! Oldest daughter, Tina, is hosting us to a week at Fallen Leaf Lake in July. Daughter, Cynthia, is meeting us in Paris in October (she lives in Italy) and son John III is working on a house in Petaluma with Ellen and me.” DONALD GOLD states “Spent a wonderful weekend celebrating my grandson Ben’s Bar Mitzvah. Proud to share the occasion with classmates Jack Hanson, Gerald ‘Jerry’ Ambinder and their wives. I look forward to our 60th reunion.” ARLENE HOLTZ LEIBER lists “Still living in SF, playing golf and enjoying all that SF offers — theatre, ballet, symphony, and the arts.” DAVID ISRAEL sends “Have lived in Southern California for over 54 years; moved to LA after Korean War. But always proud to hear or read anything Lowell! Family was affiliated with Levi Strauss in the early years – 1920 to 1960’s.”

1951

Jan & Jun

FREDERICK ‘RICK’ BR ADLEY says “Enjoying first year of retirement at 75 after 50 years. My law firm in Marin is doing fine without me and I am doing fine without a busy trial practice. See you at Tahoe this summer on the lake.”

1953

Jan & Jun

LOIS BERNSTEIN HULSEY shares “Last November my husband and I celebrated our 50th anniversary with a cruise to Egypt. In

March, my daughter and I went to Israel and Jordon. In December our son and his family joined close friends for anther celebration at Lake Tahoe where we had married. Love traveling and have been to England, France, Italy, and the Greek Islands several times. Also enjoy antiquing and painting watercolors.” NEIL BLUMENTHAL greets “Wishing our entire class good health and hope to see you at our dinner on November 15th.”

Check the reunion calendar on page 2 for class reunion information! WILLIAM CHISUM checks in with “14 years retired and enjoying every minute of it. Taught 35 years here in San Diego, mainly 6th grade; also retired from U.S. Naval Reserve as a Captain. Active member for 18 years for Holiday Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl. Enjoy cruising – 18 voyages so far. Also enjoy spoiling our four grandchildren. Retirement is rough but somebody has to do it.”

1955

Jan & Jun

PEGGY BERRY SUTHERLIN sends “My husband, John Sutherlin, San Mateo ’54 and I were made honorary members of the year for the American Bridge League. Sorry to learn that Larry Dawson, classmate, forensics member, and bridge player, died in Oakland in 2007.” MARCIE LINDEN LOMAN emails “I would love to connect with those from the class of ’55 who also went to Winfield Scott Elementary and Marina Jr. High. I lived in the Marina District but left Lowell in 10th grade to move south and miss having connections with that earlier phase of my life. Love to hear from you. I now live in Northridge, California (earthquake town) and am a retired Clinical Social Worker, keeping busy with volunteer work, visiting kids and grandkids, traveling and pursuing my love of antiques, to name a few interests. My e-mail address is mlindlo@verizon.net”

1957 yearbooks available now for just $50! Send your check, payable to Lowell Alumni Association to us at PO Box 320009, San Francisco CA 94132 TONY ST AMANT updates “So here I am, living in Chico, Butte County, when I read in the local newspaper that a nearby town’s high school will play Lowell Friday night. Wow! It gets me thinking about the pre-game rallies in the old courtyard and maybe a walk to Kezar Stadium. What it didn’t make me think about was how abysmal the Lowell football teams of my era were. But not to worry, I guess some things never change. My dear alma mater is drubbed by Paradise High 51 to zip! And on top of that, I had made the serious tactical error of bragging on my high school to a granddaughter with a wicked and biting sense of humor which rivals my own, who attends Paradise High. Now she helps bring back the rest of my high school football memories, the humiliation of having friends from Poly, Balboa, Washington, and Lincoln during football season! It is too true that the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

1958

Jan & Jun

CHERIE JO’ELL SINGER WILLIAMS yells “See you at our 50th !” ALBERT EPES sends “Enclosed is my check for money I would have spent on reunion dinner. Hope this helps with budget problem. Teachers and students need the support, and I can be at the event in spirit.” [Editor’s Note – Thanks so much for this thoughtful donation to support today’s Lowell students!]

Check the reunion calendar on page 2 for class reunion information! NICHOLAS & BENITA RUERO ST AMANT mail “It’s hard to believe we’ve been away from the city living in Maryland for 35 years now. Benita retired from Loyola College this year but Nick continues to work for the federal government. Looking forward to a 50-year reunion next year. (Eating Club rules!)” PAM EFFENBECK CLEMENSEN updates “Dave Harrison, I challenge you in being bionic. I have had both knees and both hips replaced. My husband, Vahl and I travel all over the world, and the airport scenario to ‘undress’ and ‘get a massage’ is now the usual fare. I remarried in ‘03 (to Vahl, a wonderful guy) and retired from high school counseling that same year. Was a song girl at Lowell -- now, that is just ‘in my dreams’ but I cheer on my 17-month old grandson in Bend, Oregon. Have a special pen pal, also a Lowell ’32 grad and fellow Cal grad ‘36, Lou Cherin, my former class mate, Feralee’s dad. We have a common bond in our twisted humor and his understanding and appreciation of life. Looking forward to our class reunion.”

Check the reunion calendar on page 2 for class reunion information! MICHAEL BRANDT informs “I just completed my 80th marathon in San Francisco on August 3, 2008 with a goal of completing 100. After running marathons on all seven continents and 11 countries, I am toying with all 50 States. Still traveling and have been fortunate to visit over 50 countries with Bermuda on the horizon. Our daughter Kim graduated from Vassar College and is in her last year of Law School at University of Oregon. Is there a 50th reunion in the planning? makbrandt@cs.com” [Editor’s Note – Don’t miss the article about Michael’s running exploits elsewhere in this issue.] CAROL DIMIT OTIS updates “After a lifetime of living mostly in the Bay Area, I am currently living in rural Colorado, the southwest corner, developing 35 acres of ranch land, learning about wells, water, along with deer, elk, bobcats, bear, snakes etc. and I love it. I volunteer for an organization that helps the Hopi on Second Mesa, and I am training to be a guide at Chimney Rock Archeological Site. My three children have produced two beautiful granddaughters. I keep telling my younger friends that each decade gets better, and at 66, I can confirm the truth in that.” RONALD STRATTEN comments “What a smile it brings to my face to see your names, remember our years together, and know that so many of my former classmates are doing well. We were at Lowell during a very special period, I think. Life in the Midwest is good, too. I am winding down my career in athletic administration and miss the Bay Area and my time there a lot. Drop me a line at strats1@sbcglobal.net.” THEODORE BRESLER sends via email “We now have 2 grandsons: Julian, born Sept. 2005, and Miles, born June 2007; both live in San Diego. I have just been cast in ‘The Cherry Orchard ’ by Chekhov; performances will be at Las Positas College in Livermore in July and August. I was saddened to learn of the death of Ethel Perino. She was my homeroom teacher at A.P. Giannini Jr. High and was admired and respected by her students. She continually recommended that we go to high school at Lowell. Of course, at the time her husband was the principal at Lowell!! But her advice was sound, so I followed it and was never sorry.”

DENNIS JAFFE updates “Paula and I have married 40 years and are incredibly thrilled grandparents of twins, one of each sex. Now semi-retired, our garden (passionate hobby) was featured in Better Homes and Garden’s ‘Perennial’ issue in June.”

Can you believe after 64 years, JUDITH “JUDY” GORDON PACKER, CHERIE VOGEL GREGOR and JACQUELINE “JACKIE” SHUPACK BERG are still great friends, are well in Southern California, and still see each other often? Judy has 13 grandchildren, Cherie has 6, and Jackie has 3. Judy has a successful cosmetic company; Jackie is enjoying her second career, as an Assistant Professor, teaching Nutrition courses at Los Angeles mission College. Cherie is having fun in the Palm Springs area.

DEWEY SEETO announces “One of my published articles (on price cap regulation) was being used in an energy economics course at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China — the leading science and engineering university in China.” GIMMY PARK LI informs “Retired from 38year career in public affairs from KNBR/KFOG/ KSAN Radio Stations. Focused now on volunteering with Presidio Park Stewards, Friends of the Public Library, and local politics.” JOAN LEWIS BESSMAN updates “Just returned home from visiting my second granddaughter born May 2nd to my son, Daniel and his wife Lorene. Daniel is a Naval Academy grad serving in Japan; will return in the fall to attend grad school. Daughter, Libbie, is an energy analyst for the State of California. And youngest son, Matthew-Stephen, has just been accepted to Oxford for graduate studies.”

Check the reunion calendar on page 2 for class reunion information! LIZZIE BROWN JEREMI writes “I am looking forward to seeing all my classmates on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at our 45-year reunion. Please come and shake a leg with us.” PHILIP TUTT tells “Enjoying retirement — finally get to study and write what I want, not what I have to for someone else. Also celebrating 28 years with my life partner, Stephen Roberts. Hope the Lowell budget situation is resolved soon.” WILLIAM MENZIES updates “Back in NorCal again. Hope to see everyone at our 45year reunion next year.” GWENLYN GIFFING GIBSON offers a cheery “Hello everyone! I’m doing fine, enjoying retirement and two young grandbabies, ages 2 and 4. Currently a docent at the SF Asian Art Museum — let me know if you want a tour. Am excited about our reunion committee’s plans for our 45th — put October 17, 2009 on your calendar now!” DINAH “DIANE” EISON ROBERTS shares “Having a ball with my six grandchildren — 4 boys and 2 girls. Still working at same wonderful law firm in S.F., been here since 1974; have been married for 41 years to a lovely Mission High grad. Because of the field that I am in, have contact with lots of Lowell attorneys and judges. Have two grown, married sons. Looking forward to seeing Class of June ‘64 in October 2009 when we celebrate our 45-year reunion; also looking forward to having another special ‘Lowellites On The Town’ with my buds. See ya soon.” DIANA HOFFMAN KAZUBOWSKI reports “We moved to Sparks, NV and built a beautiful home in the high desert in January. Husband John and horse are retired. I joined PortalSoft, Inc. in Mountain View this past February as Chief Marketing Officer and Senior VP, so I commute weekly. Love it! I’m on the reunion committee for our 45th next year (October 17th). Please come and see your 60-something ‘old’ friends.” Congratulations to MARC CHRISTENSEN upon his retirement after teaching and coaching in the SF public schools for the past 39 years. [Editor’s Note – Word is that Marc’s retirement party was a memorable bash with a huge turnout

of friends.] Co-founder and president of the SF Prep Hall of Fame, Marc joined the ranks of the group’s illustrious inductees in May, 2007. He also serves as a board member of the SF Coaches Association and Jewish Sports Hall of Fame of Northern California and as a consultant to the Lowell Sports Foundation. One of his current projects is helping to plan a 45-year reunion for the Lowell classes of January and June 1964, set for October 17, 2009. COLLIN CHU is “enjoying retirement after 35 years of optometric practice. Miss my patients, don’t miss work. Devote most of my free time to spoiling my two grandchildren, tennis, golf, sailing and traveling. I led my tennis team to the USTA National Championships in Las Vegas as the NorCal sectional champions last October but we didn’t take the national title. Took my wife, daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren to China this past May for the dedication of a senior center I donated to my ancestral village in Xinhui, Guangdong. See you all at the 45-year reunion next year on October 17th.” [Editor’s Note — In case you missed it, I think the classes of January & June 1964 are planning a 45-year reunion for October 17, 2009. You can tell they’re doing a great job of spreading the word already.]

DANIEL SKINNER e-mails “Just retired from LAPD and would love to reconnect with Gary Thompson and other friends from the June class of 1965. My wife Denise and I live in Santa Clarita and our daughter, son-in-law and granddaughters live in Palo Alto and our son resides in Santa Rosa.” RUTH SALLEIN ASTLE SAMAS informs “On May 16, 2008, I received my SJD and I am now an academic doctor. I was selected to speak at graduation on behalf of the advanced degree (LLM & SJD) graduates. My dissertation was titled ‘Integrity and Ethics in Western Adjudicatory Systems Toward a Standard.’” MICHAEL SCHAMES posts “Relocated my home to Ashland, Oregon from Belmont, California in early 2008. Just celebrated my 23rd year in the financial services industry and am currently a Vice President — Investments with Wachovia Securities in Medford, Oregon. Daughter Chana will be graduating from University of Oregon this year. Life is good!”

RONALD BOWERMAN updates “We are still in rural Alaska with our youngest of four daughters graduating from high school this year. See you at the 40th.” NANCY LIGON DE ITA will be installed on February 13, 2009 as the San Mateo County Bar Association President, at the ceremonial courtroom at the historic courthouse in Redwood City. She credits her ability to get into law school and on the Law Review to her Lowell English teacher Ms. Wallach, and her Aptos Junior high English teacher Miss Collins (who later taught at Lowell). Nancy states “Great teachers make a big difference in the future of their students, especially the diamonds in the rough.”

MICHAEL LEWIN announces “Third child Max Lewin will enter Lowell as part of the Class of 2012. Emily Lewin — Lowell Class of 2010, Benjamin Lewin — Lowell Class of 2007. We continue to enjoy the Lowell tradition.” LISA KUHN QUINN reveals “Hi guys! I am so sorry I won’t be able to make it to the reunion but would love to hear how it went or see any photos. I was happy this last May to have two Lowellites come stay at my bed & breakfast near Paris (Google Dormouse House); and, especially to receive a Lowell sweatshirt courtesy of the alumni association — wow! I must say that living in France, my neighbors — and my Scottish husband — simply cannot grasp what it means to be a Lowellite; high school for them is something to be endured, got out of, and forgotten as quickly as possible — with no question of keeping in touch, and certainly not the panoply of high achievers and (for the rest of us!) just good people. When I got my 150th history book, I was AMAZED to see that my greatgreat-grandfather Ellis H. Holmes was the first principal of Lowell; I’d known that HIS father had started the San Francisco Normal School (1st school for teachers in the West), but had no clue about the Lowell connection — unbelievable! Gee, if I had known I wouldn’t have had to work so hard in Junior high — I could have just pulled strings, lol! I would love also to hear from any old friends or teachers.”

Campus News Briefs New Administrators Include Lowell Alumna Two of Lowell’s three Assistant Principals are new this school year, although one has been affiliated with Lowell in other ways for years. Lowell alumna Janet (Lee) Tse, from the class of January 1968, is Lowell’s new Assistant Principal for Curriculum. Ms. Tse served as Dean at Lowell from 2000 to 2006 before moving to a position with the school district’s multilingual program. She returns to her alma mater hoping to “provide additional support to students who find Lowell daunting and challenging and help make their Lowell experience a rewarding one.” Our new Assistant Principal for Administration is Michael Yi, a veteran educator who has worked in China, Kansas and, most recently, at A.P. Giannini Middle School in San Francisco. One of Mr. Yi’s priorities is upgrading educational technology at Lowell, as evidenced by his recent establishment of a new online calendar of school events. The Lowell community also expresses its appreciation and best wishes to our departing Assistant Principals, Janee Montelongo and Mary Streshly. Ms. Streshly is now the Principal at Half Moon Bay High School while Ms. Montelongo serves as a Vice Principal at Sacramento’s Florin High School.

1991 LE-LAN LE JORGENSEN writes “Left the fog for seasonal Walnut Creek and a real yard for Will, Sam and Charlotte — ages 3-1/2 years, 2 years, and 4 months old. Still working as a nurse anesthetist in OR and labor-delivery for Kaiser. Married my college love, Ryan. Always curious...and nosy...keep in touch: lelan.jorgensen@ alumni.duke.edu.” LENORA LEE informs “Just launched a modern dance company with collaborator Elaine Wang. Please see my profile on Facebook under ‘Christina Tillman’.” JONATHAN FONG announces “Hi everyone. I married my fiancée Wendy in August 2008. Very excited and honored to teach AP Chemistry at Lowell this school year; visit Mr. Fong’s Lowell Chemistry website at www. scienceiscool.org.” [Editor’s Note – Enrollment in AP Chem at Lowell has grown dramatically due to Jonathan’s popularity and reputation as an outstanding educator.]

1996 KATRINA DODSON is halfway through a Ph.D. program in comparative Literature at UC Berkeley. She has been teaching undergraduate literature courses and hopes to encounter some Lowell alums in her classes soon.

1999 BARBARA HOU greets “Hi Everyone! I’m still out here in far-flung Hong Kong. There are four other Lowellites out here in HK — Andrew ‘Andy’ Green ’95, Janet Fung ’02, Jackie Chan ’93 (not “the” Jackie Chan) and Clarence Cheuk ’95. We hang out, have mutual friends and it’s nice. Also, almost met up with John Solomon ’99 when I was in Shanghai. I still talk to Mr. Edelman regularly who’s now at Lincoln and have managed to get in touch with more Lowellites via Facebook. I’ve also recently switched law firms, from the British law firm of Allen & Overy to the US law firm of Cleary Gottlieb. Other than that, not much terribly exciting. Hope you’re all great! ”

Staff currently too busy for the new lounge!

New Staff Lounge Dedicated to Paul Lucey Principal Andy Ishibashi hosted a special dedication ceremony this past June for Lowell’s new staff lounge, named in honor of long-time Lowell faculty member and administrator and Executive Director Emeritus of the Lowell Alumni Association, Paul Lucey. The lounge sports a bright new paint job, comfortable chairs and sofas and even an electric fireplace. Principal Ishibashi’s goal was to create a space with the look and feel of a residential living room rather than a company break room and, by all accounts, he has more than met that objective. Mr. Lucey was on hand for the dedication and expressed his heartfelt appreciation for being remembered in such a special way.

Lowell Freshmen Face Longer Classes Members of the entering class of 2012 find themselves spending more time in class this semester due to schedule changes implemented to comply with California law mandating the minimum number of instructional minutes for high school students. In previous years, freshmen were required to log time in one of several resource centers to supplement time spent in classes, but now most freshman classes have been expanded from 200 minutes per week to about 260 minutes per week.

Lowell API Score Soars Lowell students have consistently performed at such high levels that the school’s Academic Performance Index has been among the best of all California’s public high schools, with little room for improvement — or so it was thought. The recently-released scores showed a 12 point improvement at Lowell, yielding a score of 950 points out of a possible 1,000. All statistically significant subgroups at Lowell posted improved scores, including a 29 point gain by Latino students and a 19 point gain by students from socioeconomically disadvantaged families, who now average 944 points, almost identical to the school’s overall average. Lowell boasts the fifth-highest API score among California public high schools and the highest among public high schools with more than 1,000 students.

Applications for Admission Still Strong More than 1,900 students applied for admission to Lowell’s class of 2012, with more than 85% of those applicants listing Lowell as their first choice among the city’s public high schools. (Under the current student assignment system, students are allowed to list ranked preferences for as many as seven different schools.) Of the more than 4,300 students seeking admission to the city’s public high schools this year, Lowell was by far the most popular first-choice pick, selected by 38% of all applicants city-wide. Lowell enrolled a total of just over 650 ninth graders this year.

Sports Headlines Lowell athletes again dominated the Academic Athletic Association this past spring, taking nearly every team title in the league. The Cardinals earned team championships in badminton, varsity baseball, girls’ fencing, girls’ soccer, girls’ softball and boys’ volleyball. At the All-City swim meet, Lowell took the boys’ varsity, girls’ varsity and girls’ junior varsity titles. And at the All-City track and field meet, the boys’ varsity, girls’ varsity, boys’ frosh/soph and overall team titles went to Lowell. You can find the latest schedules and standings for all of Lowell’s sports teams at www.cifsf.org or www.lowellathletics.com.
