HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE The 1992/93 school year passed by like a speeding bullet. It resembled a sprint, beginning at the opening gun with the historic admission of young women to the PreUniversity Program. It ran past the arrival of over two hundred visitors to LCC's Leadership for Democracy Conference, on through the Grade 5 exchange with I'ecole NotreDame-de Liesse in the Gaspesie, championships in Midget basketball. Midget X-Country Skiing, table tennis, and debating, a sensartonal production of The Wizard of Oz, an extraviganza in the form of the Casino & Lottery Night on the rink, and finally to the finish line, the 19th version of History Night in the Junior School. That I have omitted an additional one hundred and forty-two equally significant activities and events is not an oversight. I will leave the coverage of those highlights to the talented and dedicated 'Image' editor, David Alpert, who compiled £ill this informaHon under the uidance of his meticulous staff adviser, Mr. rian Moore. Congratulations to these individuals on another excellent publication. To the graduating class of 1993, best wishes in the years ahead. Come back and visit us often.

EDITOR'S COMMENTS Life is like a yearbook. No one can make it on his own. And this year's Image is no exception. I recently realized that when I first asked for this job last September, I really didn't have any idea what 1 was getting into. All the same, after a computer crash and numerous deadline crunches, I am proud to have been a part of this year's Image team. The amount of work that goes into making an annual is incredible, and a team it was, so please bear with me as there are many people who deserve recognition. Throughout the year, Mr. Moore's reminders about what I needed to watch were of immense help to an editor who began the year with almost no experience. Had it not been for the careful eye he kept tossing over my shoulder, a few important details might not have received the attention which they deserved. Mr. Patterson, as hard as you try, you cannot escape the yearbook. As resident yearbook guru, his knowledge of past years and his willingness to answer any question were invaluable. In addition, I must thank him for some of the incredible photography exhibited in the following pages. Paul Morton and Jon Hastings spent many long hours in the darkroom, and I thank them for putting up with the insane requests of us lowly editors who always seemed to wait until the last minute. Paul, Jon, and Laurent Madore were the backbone of our photography department and, as any former editor knows, the picture-people have all the power. Homayoun, Owen, Peter, have fun next year and remember: whatever happens, stay crazy. It's the orJy way to stay sane. Nazmy, Omar, John, Jason, Sean, and the rest of the staff, thanks for hanging in there. Mr. Benoit and his Computer Applications class can take almost full credit for the grad bios. It's amazing how quickly they came in after we were threatened with bible quotes! Our Josten's representative, Mr. Steve Weeks, was always on hand to ai\swer questions. I would also like to thank Mr. Guimont and the math department for their help in the computer room, Mr. Badian for the various pictures, Milo for his password, Mathew Aronson for the namestamping, Remy Bhilotra and Richard Durrett for their selfless, on-the-spot help, and Dave Mills for being a wonderful guy and a great role model. Finally, I owe much to my teachers, family, and friends for putting up with me this past year. AU the stress and hair-pulling was well worth it. Thank you all.

fer::;

Putting together a yearbook is a gargantuan task that requires teamwork. The 1993 Image 'team' has been captained by our fearless editor, David Alpert, who has remained calm even in the face of ominous deadlines. Thank you, David, for all your hard work. I would also like to thank my section editors: Paul Morton (photography); Homayoun Saleh and Peter McDougall (sports); John Brownstein (activities); Nazmy Abaskharoun (jvmior school); Owen Rees (faculty and Alpert's assistant); David Bouskill, Jason Schuele, and Jade Youngblood (business); Omar Ahmad (undergrads); Sean McAllister (grads); and Kevin Yu (grade 12). You have made a significant contribution to this year's annual. My thanks also go out to the 'little' people ~ the trench persons, assistants, and photographers - who played integral roles in the shaping of our yearbook. Richard Hovey, thank you for your assistance with the junior school section. I also owe a debt of gratitude to Jack Benoit and his computer applications class, who put in many long hours typing (and dealing with the hassles of) the grad write-ups. Thank you. And last, but not least, I thank Ron Patterson, my mentor, who spent many hours overseeing the photographers and their darkroom. Brian Moore Staff Advisor May 1993

LEAVING STAFF David Flam. Junior Master: David, an Old Boy from the Class of 1987, joined the staff in September for one year as a Junior Master after graduating from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. During his year at the school, David taught Study Skills in Grade 8, Ethics in Grades 8 & 9, taught some Economics in the Pre-University Year, spoke to the PreUniversity class on Journalism, assisted Mr. Callaghan with students interested in applying to American colleges, and was the staff advisor for the student newspaper - the Rag. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he assisted with the coaching of the PeeWee Football Team in the fall and was one of the coaches of the 5 & 6 Hockey team during the winter season. Mr. Flam's pleasant smile, easy going style, and sincere interest in his students will be missed but we wish David every success in his future endeavours as he enters the Law Faculty at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in the fall.

Robin Burgess. Junior School: Robin came to L.C.C. from Chicago, Illinois. Upon her arrival Robin immediately went to work preparing her room for the arrival of the first bi-lingual grade 1. The class of 2002 arrived a little apprehensive but enthusiastic. Robin reported that during the first week of school she comforted 5 boys who missed their mothers. She also reports comforting 15 mothers who missed their sons. Over the last two years the English grade 1 and 2 has been a hub of activity. Under the gentle guidance of Robin these young boys have produced a beautiful quilt which was presented to the Junior School. During the summer of 1992 Robin traveled to Chicoutimi where she Uved for a few weeks with a French Canadian family. Robin and her family now return to Chicago where she will continue to teach elementary school. AU revoir et bonne chance Robin!

Stan Neverdauskis. Science: Stan joined the Geoffrey Hall. Modem Languages: Geoff comscience department six years ago after thirty- pletes forty years of teaching this month, his eight years at Monsanto Inc. He brought with seventeenth at LCC. In the meantime he will be back at Monsanto in relief for those on vacation. Thank you Stan for the contribution you have made over the last six years. Our best Karla Ellis. Karla will be missed. She leaves with warm wishes for a bright future . . .

Winnie Garbish. Chef's Aide: Winnie's presence has been enjoyed at the LCC lunches for seventeen years. This, without any absences despite broken toes, burnt legs, or sickness. She was always working without fail. Winnie was very interested in the LCC Sports. Hockey was one of her favorites. She also liked to go and watch the Lion's Football Finals at the St. Leonard stadium. For Winnie, the work in the kitchen was not just a job, it was more. She was devoted to service, excellence, and a lot more. We are all very sorry to see Winnie leave. We will miss her extra effort, as well as her smile. Everyone who had the opportunity to work closely with this wonderful lady, counts themselves extremely lucky. She was devoted for many years as a family member and a friend.

Tony Harris. English: In only two years, Tony has left his mark on LCC. He fit right into the classroom, whether it was English or History. He certainly wasn't out of place on the football field nor on the golf course. Tony began to take over the coaching of the golf team this past year; he loved to play 18 holes any time he could. Sports fans knew him as the football coach. A former AllCanadian for Bishop's, he coached the Senior Football team to two successful seasons, once to the Finals and the other time to the Semi's. In the classroom, Tony was a keen, entertaining teacher. Who in grade 8 English will ever forget his "hamburger paragraphs"? He also taught Canadian History with verve. He occasionally had the chance to teach his first love, painting, in Art Class workshops. Very few students know this side of Tony Harris, the artist. He fit right in with the LCC staff and students. His sense of humour is legendary. He was one of the boys! On behalf of the staff and students, we repeat what he often said to the members of the Senior School Football team: "Give yourself a hand, Tony Harris; you deserve it!"

HISTORY NIGHT Malcom Lewis, a recent LCC graduate who has brilliantly portrayed History Night's Recording Angel at the Pearly Gates for the past six years and has become an annual institution in himself, prophetically spoke the final words of this year's gathering when he said, "Well, that is it. History Night is now history." As all good historians know, nothing is more certain than change. Nothing, no matter how good it is, last forever. Every great civilization, regime, palace, and temple has its day of splendour, but life goes on and change is inevitable. The secret is to savour the moment, enjoy it while it lasts, and then to move on to the future. History Night was the creation and result of a unique educational experiment. It has lasted nineteen glorious years and seen nearly fifteen hundred fifty students portray their characters in all their splendour at the annual grade seven event. There is, however, a need to make changes in the Social Studies Curriculum, and History Night has thus run its course. Do not despair, for the concept of History Night has proven itself against the tests of time. Who knows? Like the proverbial Phoenix of old, it may yet arise anew from the ashes and take on new life in different form of the future. One chapter of History is now closed, but there are always new chapters to be written. It remains for me to say a special thank you to all those many

28

Old Boys, staff members, and students from the Senior School who have helped me so untiringly over the years. History Night would not have been made possible without their enormous contribution and efforts. There is not space here to mention everyone concerned, but I would like to mention a few. To Chuck McGinn, Ian Griffiths, and Sylvia Tracy of the LCC Art Department, 1 owe a great debt. 1 would also like to thank two long-time colleagues. Geoffrey Hall and Richard Barrett, who have been so involved in the writing, acting, and directing of the many History Night plays over the years. I am very thankful for the tremendous support behind the scenes and in other capacities of Paul Keyton, Victor Badian, Gordon Allan, Janet Campbell, Joy Batsis, Bea McNally, Eric Lasota, Mark Griffiths, Alain Hebert, Pierre-Jean Tremblay, David Howard, Richard Hovey, Stephen Lee, Gordon White, David Pomkoski, Chef Dick de Grendpre, and Winrue Garbish. 1 would also like to mention two old boys who have worked on History Night every year since they played their own roles in Grade Seven. To Terry Jacyno, who has been my valued assistant these past years, and to Ted Kalil, who has helped me for the past decade, 1 am truly indebted. From the wonderful support that I have received over the years from those who have experienced History Night, 1 know that the spirit of this unique event will long live on!

ACTIVITIES

STRATFORD '92

Eighty-one tired grade eleven students began the annual pilgrimage to Stratford, Ontario on a warm Wednesday morning in September. After the eight hour bus ride, with the adrenalin rising as each minute passed, all the students were glad to stretch their legs and unpack in their rooms at the Victorian Inn. The members of the football, soccer, and volleyball teams went to nearby fields to practice. Many others went to explore the town and stock up on food. After dinner, all the students walked to the Festiveu Theatre for the first play. Measure for Measure. This performance was the best we were to see. Upon our return to the Inn, students began the nightly ordering of pizza and the socializing on the telephone with nameless females. By three a.m., however, most students were asleep. After a sleepy Thursday, we returned to the theatre to see a presentation of The Tempest. At the conclusion, many students seemed to have some new found energy and they went off in taxis to explore other hotels. The bus ride back was a lively affair. The students who had the most energy kept everyone awake. Luckily, after our last stop at Kingston, most people fell asleep. By the time parents picked up their young men at 1 a.m. on Saturday morning, few would last the ride home before falling asleep. But we all agreed on one thing. The three days passed by too quickly.

BRY FOX RUN

The ardent participation in raising funds for the Cancer Research Society has always been an LCC tradition. This year was no exception. Held on Friday, September 25th, 1992, the annual LCC edition of the Terry Fox Run was organized by Mr. Maclean's Grade 12's, including F. Laflamme, Christina Brown, and C. Frankel. In addition, Mackay Centre's runners were welcomed for their ebullient participation. The three schools were able to contribute an approximate total of 20 000$ to the Cancer Research Society.

54

Besides the participation of the Mackay Centre, the 1992 edition of the Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research also incorporated many other changes. The participants of the 1992 Terry Fox Run only were to run for an hour instead of running the distant 10 km. Furthermore, while running the one hour run, the exhausted participants were alleviated by the gleeful music played by the LCC band. Finally, we extend sincere thanks to all of the students and the organizers for their contribution to the success of the 1992 Terry Fox Run.

LCC'S SECOND ANNUAL SPIRIT WEEK

56

AND SENIOR SKI TRIP This year's annual Spirit Week got off to an interesting start with Tacky Tie Day. Before long came an infamous Free Dress Day as students arrived at school dressed as their heros. We were honored by visits from such greats as Jimi Hendrix and Homer Simpson. As the week sped by, people threw themselves heartily into crazy activities like Chubby Bunny, Penny in the Pie, and an ice cream eating contest. That Friday, students from grade seven up through grade twelve joined friends from several other schools for a wild day of skiing at Mont Sutton. Not only was the snow wonderful, the weather was amazing. It was definitely a day to remember.

LEADERSHIP FOR DEMOCRACY CONFERENCE

58

Lower Canada College played host this year to its fu-st international Leadership Conference. It brought in students from all across the globe to our city. Delegates from Germany, France, Russia, Italy, Surinam, and various North American cities w-ere present for this five day affair lasting from the 7th to the 11th of October. .. The main objective of this conference was to capture the spirit of democracy and show how fortunate we are to live in one Our generation is going to be the future of our country and planet; thus, we learned about democracy and other vital topics. Highlights of the conference were plenary speakers, Chauman of CBC, Patrick Watson, and the well-known American author Midge Dector. There were many seminars throughout the event ranging from topics such as Human Rights to the New World Order which is developing before us. The delegates were broken into four political parties of a fictitious country. Each party elected a leader, created a party platform, and then ran in the elecrions. The mock-government proved to be very successful. . When the delegates were not in senunars or working with their party, they traveUed around Montreal. They had an in-depth tour of the city, ate at Le Sucrerie de la Montagne (a vintage Quebec sugarshack), and danced at a MuchMusic video dance. The conference was run by Mr. Brooks who did a tremendous job as everyone had a momentous time.

JAZZ BAND

This year marked an exciting new development in the music department as Ms. Jana Hancinsky directed the first Extracurricular Jazz Band based on skUl, not age. Freed from the restrictive bonds of a specific grade level, the band was opened to anyone in the senior school who was ready, willing, and able to play in a band setting. The result was a cross-section of proficient students from grade 7 up through the Pre-University Year who really wanted to play. This desire on the part of the band members made all the difference and shone through as they performed in the Montreal Music Festival. A large portion of the band went on to show their stuff in the New Orleans Jazz Festival in April. With luck, the Jazz Band's performance will mark the start of a new LCC tradition.

LCC PLAYERS

Audiences at the three performances of the LCC Players' 1992 season set unprecedented attendance records, demonstrating a renewed enthusiasm and interest in the performing arts in the LCC community. The Players' production of the whodunit Rehearsal for Murder was given an exceptionally warm reception from the public. The size of the audience increased geometrically each of the three nights of the play, from Wednesday, December 2 to Friday, December 4, proving yet again the commonly held view that word of mouth remains the Players' most effective form of publicity. The play's immense success was due to countless elements of the production, not the least of which was the actual nature of the drama, a gripping murder mystery which kept the audience members at the edge of their seats until the end of the second act. For the first time in the Players' thirteen-year history, female characters were portrayed by three actresses from Pre-U. This break with the Shakespearean tradition of 62

casting Junior School boys in women's roles seemed to have been well received by the general public. The ingenious set design was conceived and built by Mr. Ian Griffiths, and was nimbly manipulated by the stage crew under the direction of Marcel Nguyen. The prompter was Pia Wilkinson-Chapman, and Jonathan Hastings was properties-master. The LCC Theatre's lighting design and sound system were professionally created by Laurent Madore, Homayoun Saleh, and technical director Owen Rees. Congratulations are in order for the cast of ten thespians with theu inspiring director, Mr. Geoffrey Hall, for having rehearsed and prepared a first-rate full-length production in the short time span of only two and a half months. In the name of the whole LCC Players team, I would like to thank Mr. Hall, and wish him good fortune in his further endeavours with the Players with the traditional theatrical expression, "Break a leg."

THE CITRUS FRUIT SALE

' The armual Citrus Fruit Sale had a modest beginning in 1984. That "year, a total of 836 small and 256 large boxes of oranges, grapefruits and tangelos were sold. Our sales total was $16,277 and we were delighted to realize a profit of $4,581. In 1992, our 9th sale was our second best to date. Approximately $21,000 was raised for the Sports Trip and Tournament Fund. 2143 small boxes and 1402 large boxes of fruit were sold. The sales total exceeded $66,000. A total of $2,650 in prizes was awarded. As the sales volume grows, so does the work associated with it. A large number of staff, students and parents have had a hand in ensuring the success of this year's sale. The sale began with an army of salesmen from all grade levels spreading out to cover every comer of the city and beyond. Many parents were actively involved at this stage, promoting the sale at their places of business. Qass representatives and home room teachers checked all of the class sales orders. The orders were entered on the computers by Mr. Jack Benoit & his Macintosh Computer Applications class. They set a high standard which will be difficult to match in future years. The Physical Education Staff, with assistance from students, unloaded the two and a half trailer trucks and later distributed it all with the help of other staff members. A Junior School parent, Ms. Kayla Schneiderman, loaned the school two pallet carts which made the unloading much easier. Through the efforts of this group, the Sale progressed in a very orderly manner. The fruit arrived on a Monday morning and was gone by the Saturday of the same week.

BLOOD DRIVE

On April 15, 1993 Lower Canada College held its annual Red Cross Blood Drive, courtesy of efficient organization by the Pre-University class. To help promote the occasion, the Pre-U students phoned many Old Boys, parents, and past donors. There were also fliers passed around houses and businesses in N.D.G. During the course of the afternoon two

hundred and twenty pints of blood were collected. Once a donor had finished giving blood they were handed a DurJdn' Donut and one of the many door prizes which had been collected. The Blood Drive was a huge success and the orgariizers would like to thank all those who volunteered their time as well as those who donated their blood.

LCC - DEBATING POWERHOUSE

The 1992-93 Quebec Student Debating Association season was nothing short of a triumph for LCC. In January, Matthew Aronson, Andrew Grove, Angshu Bhattacharyya and George Vouloumanos won top school honours for LCC at the Bialik High School Junior Tournament. Matthew Aronson also took top speaker honours at Bialik. In March, LCC's Senior debater stole the show at the provincial championships held at Trafalgar. Jesse Shustik and Jamie Schouela were crowned senior provincial debating champions while Justin Lalonde, Peter Schwartz, Milovan Prelevic and Corey Velan brought home the other available trophy by winning top school team honours. Not to be outdone by the Seniors, Andrew

66

Grove and Vadim di Pietro earrned the right to be called junior provincial debating champions at the yearend championship tournament held at Villa Maria. George Vouloumanos was also awarded a book prize for being among the top ten speakers at that tournament. In addition, the performances of Jesse Shustik and Andrew Grove, at the senior and junior championships respectively, earned each a spot on the teams representing Quebec at the national championship tournaments in St. John and Halifax. Congratulations to all junior and senior debaters and their coaches, Mr. Brooks and Mr. Vlahogiannis, for an outstanding season.

COMPUTER COMPETITIONS

This year, over the course of four contests and several months, the American Computer Science League ran its annual computer progranrming competition. Throughout the contests, our young programmers continually scored well, sometimes gaining a perfect, and earned enough points to be invited to the ACSL All-Stars competition after ranking first in their division and second in Canada. Friday, May 28th was a cold, wet day when Mr. Pichovich and four of his six team members piled into his car and headed off to Coventry, Road Island. After attending a grad and a recital, David Alpert and Derek Wong headed down to join Patrick Hung and complete the Senior team. Sigmumd Lam, Jonathan Michaelson, and Homayoun Saleh formed up the Intermediate team as we all arrived at Coventry High School on the morning of Saturday, May 29th. The competition was fierce, consisting of teams from all over North America, with the first-place team earning 108 out of 120 possible points. Our Senior team worked hard for a fourth place while our Intermediate team tied for second in their division but lost out on the tie-breaker to wind up third, the highest finish for an L C C team in several years. Good work, guys. Many thanks to Mr. Pichovich, for his organization and leadership, and to the Alpert family, for assisting with transportation. Good luck next year.

TALENT SHOW

The Students' Council held the fifth annual Talent Show Extravaganza on April 23 of this year. Hoards of screaming fans crowded the dining hall to take in an evening of spectacular, and sometimes shocking, entertainment. Kippy Clark and Brad Smith got the renowned Mr. L.C.C. Pageant on the road in good fashion. During this battle of muscles and brains, we saw the likes of Eric Seltzer and many others, but Zackary Greirson's wit, cnarm, and Adonis-like physique outdid the other contestants as ne was crowned Mr. L.C.C. Meanwhile, Co-hosts Richie Cohen and Peter Schwartz made way for the quality entertainment (most of the time). The crowd was blessed with outstanding performances by Noah Tarnow and Rocky Goldsmith and company, but the best was yet to come. Spanky's Den featuring Francois Laflamme, gave a powerful performance and placed third. Then, naturally, Rob Hartnett, Mike Wong, and the gang, a.K.a. 22 South, tore up the stage for us one last time. But the act that truly rose to the occasion was the Lower Alley Blues Band, who ripped through some screeching Blues FuriK and drove all the crowd into a frenzy. They accepted the prize and proceeded to share it with the worn-out crowd, who had truly been blown away. The night was a success and everyone is already getting ready for next year.

STUDENTS SHOW THEIR STUFF

The sb<th annual Festival of the Arts was a busy week of activities that highhghted the efforts so many make in the areas of Art, Drama, and Music. It was a perfect opportunity for the students to show off their talents, exchange views, or gain the benefit of experienced speakers. The week began with a presentation by Atie Waxman on the numerous ways of working professionally with desk-top publishing. Mrs. Sylvia Tracy led a papermaking workshop in the Junior School Art room and the Grade 10 Theatre class, trained by Mr. Geoff Hall, performed Act I of Twelve Angry Men in the Lecture Theatre. The day ended with a big exhibition of students' works in the Art rooms and hallways. On Tuesday, the grade 4 and 5 art classes went to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. At lunchtime, Andy Vial performed a piano concert in the Music room. There was also a Music Clinic for Senior School Music students led by Mr. George Doxas of Lindsay Place High School. Graham Bourgeois, a Dawson Fine Arts student, and John Kwo in Pure and Applied at Marianopolis dropped in on Wednesday to show and explain their portfolios to the Grade 9 and 11 Art classes. Both Old Boys offered important insight into the work required to pursue Art at the CEGEP level. A film on the making of brass instruments and another based

72

on the life of Louis Armstrong were shown to Music students. The day activities were capped by an entertaining concert on the Diningroom Stage. The air was filled with Jazz and Rock music for well over two hours. Everyone involved in the Music program performed their numbers with flair. On Thursday morning there was a shorter repeat performance by the Music Department for Senior School students. A field trip by Grade 6B to Mrs. Linda Granastein's printmaking studio offered the boys a chance to make some special prints and learn more about this medium. In the afternoon, the Grade 10 and 11 Art classes bussed off to the new Musee d'Art Contemporain downtown to check out the temporary and permanent exhibits there. The Festival came to a close on the Friday with a number of interesting features. The Junior School had the pleasure of listening to the Jazz and Rock bands during the first two periods. Mark Zimmerl, at Concordia, came by with some recent works and explained them to the Grade 10 and 11 Art classes. This week-long spotlight on the Arts is the culmination of long months of work and preparation on the part of many and is in keeping with the desire to enrich the cultural side of every LCC student.

THE L.C.C. STUDENT'S COUNCIL

The 1992-1993 school year was a new successful one for the Students' Council since it saw the creation of a few new events as well as the return of some old favorites. History was made when the new, coed Pre-University students elected Jen Zeynel to the Council as the first ever female representative. Things started off with a bang when, in the third week of school, the second annual Moga Madness competition was held. It was set-up in exactly the same way as last year, with each grade competing in a series of inane physical events. Two of the old favorites were back, and the two new activities were just as popular. A few weeks after Moga, the Council held the third annual Pumpkin Fest Dance and, shortly after that, the 7&8 dance. Both were great successes and Talk of the Nineties, a company run by old-boy Phillip Lassner, proved to be the right choice to DJ.

74

Just before the Christmas break, the council treated the staff to the second annual Staff Appreciation breakfast. Pancakes, bacon, toast, juice, and coffee were served to a group of 80 hungry customers who wolfed it all down. Congratulations should be given to Mr. Harris who was clearly the pancake eating champion. Upon returning from the break, the first ever Student Council assembly was held with all the students in the Senior school. The goal of what would become a monthly event from then on was to inform the students on what the Council was doing and notify them of upcoming events. It appeared to be received quite well by the students, and will no doubt become a tradition. Jamie Schouela President, Lion's Students' Council

NEW ORLEANS

It all began on Saturday, April 24th, touring Graceland in Memphis (way too 1993. Accompanied by Ms Hancinsky, much Elvis) and doing Bourbon Street Ms Karolin Klause, and Mr. Kelsley in New Orleans, we spent three incredGrant, 17 excited LCC musicians and a ible days at the New Orleans Jazz and ton of equipment took off from Dorval Heritage Festival. GRAD TRIP -1?:

%PC,

On May 7th, 1993, the Graduating class headed out for one last adventure together. As in the past few years, we decided to go white water rafting on the Rouge River, and were not disappointed. Our day began with a one and a half hour bus ride out near Ontario, to Calumet, Quebec. We arrived at the New World River base and were quickly issued wet suits, helmets, and paddles. After a quick briefing, we were back on the busses and off to the launching point on the river. Each raft would have ten people and one guide on them, so we grouped up, boarded, and cast off. It was not until we got on the water that we realized how beautiful a day it was. The sun was shining and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Unfortunately, we really didn't get much time to appreciate it since the first and most deadly rapid

quickly approached. The Canyon, as it was named, had a rating of 5, which is the highest and most dangerous level on the rating scale. As each raft went through the Canyon and followed the river through the rest of the rapids, some made it and some didn't. Along the way, there were many water fights among the rafts, including an opportunity to throw Mr. Townsend into the water. After going down the river once, we had a quick snack, and then were bused back to the top where we promptly did it all again. The day ended with a dinner back at the base and a video presentation of our day. It was a very exciting day, the one that the classes of '93 will take with them to CEGEP and beyond.

Despite early season success, the 1992 Senior Football Lions ended the season in disappointing fashion. After having reached the city finals for six consecutive years, the Lions could not shake off the injury bug in the semi-final game against Jean-Eudes. However, the team was able to defend the Shirley Russell Cup and reclaim the Nick Matossian trophy. Led by captains Nick Sulsky, Geoff Kalil, Nick Martire, and Jackson Wightman, the team was strengthened by offensive stars Richie Cohen, Sean McAllister, and Willie Goldman, and defensive stalwarts Michael Bright and Patrick McEntyre. The Lions started the season with impressive victories over College de Montreal and arch-rival Selwyn House. After suffering a tough loss to Laurentian, the team regrouped to finish first in their division. However, several injuries, combined with a tough running team from Jean-Eudes, got in the way of a seventh straight appearance in the city finals. The players would like to thank Messrs. Morton and Harris and all the assistants who helped throughout the season. In addition, the '92 Lions wish the best of luck to the '93 Lions.

During the first week of practice, the Bantam Football team was in desperate need of players. However, once the school year got underway, football got its bodies. The team was led by veterans Andrew Stotland, Robin Blanchard, and Tony Wexler. Also in the leadership roles were rookies John Cristou, Sami Hakim, and Aliesch Isler. The team started off on the wrong foot, losing the first two games of the season, but came back by devastating Selwyn House in a not-so-close game, with the final score being 32-6 for LCC; thus securing the Matossian trophy. The Bantams won one more league game, once again against Selwyn House, this time by only five points, therefore securing a spot in the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Bantam's found themselves on the short end of a 32-28 score which ended their season. The offensive line was anchored by center Graham Thompson and guard Mathias Lorchester. The defense was led by defensive back Tony Wexler and linebackers Robin Blanchard and Andrew Stotland. Honorable mention also goes to defensive tackle Matt Rittenhouse who made some big hits. Finally, the team would like to thank the coaches Mr. Howard and Mr. Seaman, and Mr. Proudfoot for all their help and support during a trying season. Better luck next year!

With a large group of 39 players, the team was split into 2 squads, the Red and Blue squads. The Red Squad was led by the powerful running of Rob Finklestein, the swift Rob Lewin, and the accurate arm of Sean Starke. Defensively, the squad was anchored by linemen Jacob Finch, and Goddy Tisch, and middle linebacker Sean Starkeman. On the Blue side, the offensive specialists were Charles Vineberg, and Doug Hindle, led by QB John Siwiec. The team also got a lateseason boost from the discovery of world-class running back Mitsuyoshi Mutoh, who dazzled fans with the Yoshi shuffle. The squad began the season with a rough start, losing to Bishops. However, the tide quickly turned, as in the next two Jamborees, the Lions roared to a 9-5 winning record including a 42-0 victory over Selwyn House to finish the season. The team would like to thank Mr. Sigouin, Mr. Ham, and Francois Laflamme for coaching. Good luck next year!

This year's edition of the Senior Soccer Lions were not overly blessed with raw talent, but the team soon became tenacious contenders. Early in the season, the Lions took second place at the Loyola Tournament, dropping the final game to the tournament hosts. The Lions, however, would not be denied their revenge. Their season progressed relatively well, losing only to W.I.C, but the highlight was uncioubtedly the team's trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia, for the Canadian Independent Schools invitational tournament. The team came away from Kings EdgehUl School with fourth place honours, one broken collar bone, a cut and bloodied eye, 15 stiches, and great memories. Back in Montreal, the Nova-Scotian momentum kept the Lions rolling, displaying a much-improved style of soccer. The stellar defence kept goaltender Philip Bolton happily unoccupied, while scoring wizzards Adrian Burhop, Peter "Rocket" Reynolds, and Mark "Slugger" Fine kept us ahead on the scoreboard. The Lions won a playoff birth, defeating their arch-rivals Loyola by virtue of a clutch goal in the dying seconds of the last game of the season. LCC lost its semi-final match with dignity to ESMR, by a score of 1-0. The team would like to thank Mr. Tipney, our two dedicated fans, and Mr. Badian.

This year's Midget Soccer team consisted of many talented players. The captains Warren Stein and Matijn Priester led the team to a 6-2 record in a very competitive league. LCC finished the regular season as the first place team in their division. The first obstacle in the playoffs came in the form of Van Home. This match became the most exciting game of a remarkable season, as Van Home gained an early lead of 1-0 at the beginning of the second half. Not to be outdone, the Lions fought back all of the second half, and just as the sun set in the horizon, Adam Perritt scored the tying goal with seconds remaining. The end result was LCC winning in a shootout. And so the Midgets earned a ticket to the GMAA city finals, where they were to meet Laurier Macdonald who had a perfect record. In sub-zero temperatures, the LCC team fell to the potent Laurier Macdonald offence and ended up on the short end of a 4-0 score. The players would like to thank Mr. Armstrong for a fun season and his active support at every game.

The Bantam 1 Soccer team got off to a very good start by capturing the Bishops College Tournament, with three impressive wins. However, numerous injuries forced the team to play shorthanded or with one or two substitutes all year. Nevertheless, the Team finished a respectable third in their division. The Team would like to thank Mr. Hebert for his continuous support and dedication. Better luck next year!!!

This year's edition of the Senior Volleyball team got off to a horrible start, losing all but three of its regular season games. Led by captain Jordan Frishling, the only returning veteran, and spiking sensation Sean Price, the team appeared to be headed for another dismal season. Entering the playoffs and seeded eighth out of nine teams, with their backs against the wall, the players decided to go "Big Blue." Led by a sudden surge of vicious hitting by Richard Durrett and David Alpert, the team caught fire for their last three playoff tournaments. Highlighted by a six-game winning streak in Pierrefonds, the Lions capped off their most successful season in years with a 7-4 playoff record. Overall, this year's relatively inexperienced group made tremendous progress over the course of the season. Many thanks to Mr. Hovey for always enlightening the team with his vast knowledge of the game and for providing the Senior Volleyball Lions with a most enjoyable season.

Nice try

BANTAM VOLLEYBALL The 1992 volleyball season proved to be an improvement for the Bantam team. Captain Michael Alpert and assistant captain Jimmy Tsiringotis led the team to a final standing of 4th in their division, winning four times, losing an astounding six times, and tying two times. Comparing this to last year's standing of an overall last with one dying victory, the 1992 volleyball season has been one which will not be forgotten for the twelve players from both the seventh and eighth grade. The players have made great improvement, especially setters Michael Alpert, Patrick Nihon, Chris Jager, Comile Patel, and spiker Paul Rikkets. It would be in the school's best interest to get those players back for the Midget team. The inspiring coach was Serge Melan<;on, with Elizabeth Emond from the pre-university class acting as an assistant coach. Great going guys, and hope to see you all trying out next year!

Beginning . . .

BANTAM 3 SOCCER This year's Bantam 3 Soccer team had a strong learning experience. It was a tough season though, with many missed shots and goals against. The offense was quite strong with Gabriel Cernica and Patrick Watson. The defensive line did their best and improved greatly over the season, but were often up against superior opposition. They had many, many shots on the goalkeeper, Micheal Hastings. Luckily, the defense never gave up and kept on tiying. From the sidelines, Mr. Shefler donated his helpful advice which helped greatly, and we would all like to thank him. As I said, it was a rough season, with many inexperienced players, but a season which witnessed all players improve their skills. It was an enjoyable season full of team spirit. Better luck next year!

GOLF The game of golf is rapidly gaining popularity at LCC. This year, more students than ever before signed up for the annual school tournament which takes place at the Royal Montreal Golf Qub. Rob Kerr won the tournament with a respectable 75, and none other than the infamous Jonathan Roy was a close second with a score of 83. Due to holidays, the school could only put together a team of relatively inexperienced golfers. The team of four consisted of Jonathan Roy, Andrew Stotland, Andrew Roszko, and Alex Smith. Considering the tough condition in which the golfers had to golf, which included sub-zero temperatures and snow flurries, the team did surprisingly well. The entire golfing population of LCC would like to thank Mr. Smith, Mr. Howard, and Mr. Harris for their efforts in allowing the school to partake in these tournaments.

CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country Team again enjoyed a successful season, competing in five meets. The highlight being the run on Mount Royal. The team rookies of Duncan Johnson, Chris Granel, William Whitty, and Jesse Prupas add the extra dimension to the overall strength of the team. SENIOR HOCKEY

Led by captain Geoff Kalil, and assistant captains Jackson Wightman, Chris Frankel, and WUlie Goldman, the Senior Hockey Team had an enjoyable year. However, due to the relative inexperience of the team and early goalie problems, the team didn't achieve its full potential. However, the team did manage to rally for tournament play and put up a respectable fight against the Czechoslovakian national junior team; losing only 7-2; the closest score in the tournament. All in all, it was a learning experience for the team. And many thanks to the coaches Mr. Wightman and Mr. Bower for their time and effort. The team would also like to wish the best of luck to the 1994 Senior Hockey Lions!

The Bantam Hockey team's season this year was filled with its ups and downs. Despite a wealth of talent led by team captain Sudeep Chaklanabis, the slightly undersized team had troubles contending for the title. The team did, however, find success in tournament and exhibition play, taking second place at the Selwyn House Tournament. In the team's annual trip, they managed to sweep with two convincing victories over the Americans as the team travelled south of the border to Connecticut. With flashes of brilliance here and there, the season went well and the players wish to express thanks to Mr. Spencer and Mr. Norris for all their time and effort spent coaching.

The Peewee hockey team had a fairly good year, coming in second in the GMAA and second in the Appleby College Invitational Tournament. Led by the stonewall goaltending of Peter Huang, the team was undefeated until the second week of January. Attending one tournament and hosting their own, they had an enjoyable year. The team beat Selwyn House to get into the GMAA final against College Jean-Eudes where they lost in a close game 8-6. Mr. Moore and Mr. Patterson did great jobs coaching the team, constantly giving them pointers as to what they could improve on. Definitely a wonderful year!

5 S6 HOCKEY The 5 & 6 Hockey team had a great year, not losing a game in their regular season. The team attended a tournament in Toronto in which they placed first. In the tournament at LCC, they placed second beside St. John's-Ravencourt. Mr. Barrett and Mr. Flam taught their players how to play fast paced hockey. Nick Velan and Philip Rupert were the assistant captains, led by captain David Mayne. The addition to the coaching staff of Mr. Flam, an excellent skater, made the team all the faster. This year's Senior Basketball Team was lucky enough to be blessed with a great deal of raw talent. At the season's outset, however, the team lacked discipline and unity, resulting in several early losses. The Lions grew as the season went on and tournaments brought them together as a team. LCC won the Verdun Tournament on the consolation side, and was very impressive in the Loyola Tournament. One of the year's highlights was the trip to Boston, where the Lions split two games against the powerful Rivers School. Due to LCC's early-season losses, they were denied a spot in the playoffs. The Lions finished the year on a positive note, however, as they won the Selwyn tournament, and punished Lachine High with a 28 point win in their last season game. The year was a success, and the team would like to thank Mr. Howard for making it so with his patience and effort.

The first Giris Basketball Team was a great success. What we lacked in skill, we made up for in determination and enthusiasm. Our record of 3-7 does not express the amount of character the team had. Consisting of 10 players, only 5 of which had played before, it is a miracle that we won any games at all. Many thanks to Miss Manseau for all her support.

Midget " 1 " Basketball had an outstanding team this year. The core of returning veterans, Peter McDougall, Lewis Tolensky, and Sean Bower, were bolstered by Martijin Priester and Warren Stein as well as by the members of our resourceful and diverse Grade niners. With the depth that this team had, it swept the league. They were 12-0 in their division and finished the year with a record of 36-3. The team's highlights over their s k month season were winning the Selwyn House, Loyola, LCC, and Maccabi Tournaments. The team also travelled to the states to play two

teams there. They returned with two wins and no losses. Upon winning the GMAA championships, the team decided to partake in the provincials, but after being knocked out by the eventual champions in the third game, they realized that the incredible year had finally come to an end. The team would like to give many thanks to their coach, Mr. Tipney, for all of his time and effort, and for seeing them through in the end.

A team effort . .

MIDGET "3 " BASKETBALL Although hard fought, this year's Midget " 3 " Basketball team's stats did not seem to reflect the numerous hours that went into the making of the team. Talent was plentiful among the members of this year's team, although did not prove to be enough, and our record did seem to reflect this. If a season can be regarded a great one on the basis of the amount of fun the members of the team had, then our season was definitely a great one. We learned more than basketball; we learned about each other and about being a team. And we would like to thank Mr. Smith for teaching it all to us.

BANTAM "I " BASKETBALL The 1992-93 Bantam 1 Basketball Team had an up and down season. The team was very successful in out of town tournaments, but held a good attitude throughout their regular season losing record, partly due to inexperience. Aside from one returning player from the previous year, the whole team consisted of rookies. Captain Jordan Parker led the team with an average of over 17 points per game. Improved play by various players also helped the team and will be an asset next year. Many thanks to Mr. MacLean, whose encouragement and experienced coaching made the year very enjoyable.

Good will . . .

BANTAM "3 " BASKETBALL This year the Bantam 3 Basketball Team offered several players the opportunity to play basketball for the first time. Although we played enthusiastically, our level of play was mostly overmatched in a very competitive league. Many of the players displayed improvement in skill and knowledge of the game which will certainly help their play in the future. An extremely enjoyable year to coach, as the team's spirit was always positive.

This year's 5 & 6 Basketball Team fell short of the .500 mark for the first time. After a solid tournament and some great games, the team fell back in two upset losses late in the season. Unfortunately the season ended early, with a semi-final loss in the playoffs. But the best was yet to come. In previous years, the team had travelled to Winchester, Massachussetts for their exchanges. This year, after attending the L.C.C. 5-6 Tourney, U.C.C. hosted L.C.C. for its very enjoyable sixteam tournament. L.C.C. lost only in the finals, running out of steam after the previous night's late fun. The season finished on an extremely upbeat note. "Wait 'til next year!"

Led by skips Paul Morton and Patrick Hung, the curling team had a fabulous season. One by one, the team took out the opposition, thus finishing first in the league. Unfortunately, it lost in the playoffs to Lachine in double overtime. Other highlights of the season included the Winter Christmas Tournament and the Selwyn House Bonspiel which was won by the team of Paul Morton, Sean Price, Homayoun Saleh, and Elizabeth Emond. The team would like to thank Mr. Townsend for making this an enjoyable season.

CROSSCOUNTRY SKIING It was another uphill climb for this year's cross-country ski team. At the bantam level, Philip Blake finished third. In the midget level, Robin Blanchard placed third while Johnathan Dunsmore placed sixth overall. In the senior category, Nick Martire had a clean sweep of the races and finished first overall. A good comeback . . .

WRESTLING This year's Wrestling Team had a dismal start. Losing to Selwyn House in the first match, LCC started a season-long losing streak. However, they rallied at the end of the season to win a match and two tournaments. In the Riverdale Tournament, Paul Conner won a bror\ze against tough odds. In the finals, LCC came through with their best showing all year. The silver medalists were Paul Conner, David Rafla, and Sean McAllister, and the bronze medalists were Eugene Park and Mike Bright. This gave LCC fourth place; one of their best showings in years.

SENIOR RUGBY

This year's Senior Rugby team was anything short of able and willing players. On the first day of try-outs, there were almost enough players to field three teams. The determined team was led by a very experienced English player by the name of Ali Massoudi, who always kept the team driving for the try line. Truly this year's most enjoyable victory was the one over Loyola, at their home pitch. After playing the entire game in a torrential downpour, it was most appreciated to hear the official blow the final whistle. The Seven's Tournament was held at home this year with an enjoyable day in the sun and an unfortunate loss for the " A " team, to John Rennie. The highlight of their season was definitely the voyage down the 401 to Kingston. Two days of sheer enjoyment playing rugby, touring Queens University, and other associated 'extracurricular' activities. The season came to an abrupt end with a loss to Selwyn House in the semi-Final game, a more than respectable effort with an unfortunate result. Many thanks to Mssrs. Townsend and Armstrong for that extra 300m run almost every practice and, of course, for putting up with the team all season.

Anyhow, the team would like to thank Mr. Howard for the time and effort that went into making the season Always a pleasure!

BANTAM RUGBY The 1993 Bantam Rugby team had diversity as its main component. Led by captains Jonathan Mee and Wouter Priester, the team had a blend of speed and height. They enjoyed a good season of fvm rugby. Winning some and losing some throughout the year, the season was a learrung experience in the ways of rugby. The highlights of the season were the two 7's Tournaments that the team participated in. The GMAA 7's, held at home, were not fruitful. The BCS 7's, however, were a triumph. JUJITSU The fourth year of jujitsu has come to an end. The year has been another productive season with the club being opened up to Grade seveners. With the help of Mr. Heward, many newcomers have since joined. There was one oelt test in early March for the Senior belts. This test lasted around five hours! Everybody who took the test was awarded the belt. For the first time in the club's history, a brown belt was awarded! The staff sessions still continued, and the four teachers that participated all received their orange belts. At the end of May, a white belt test was held. A lot of the white belts passed the difficult test. Next year promises to be as productive and enjoyable as the one that has just concluded. (BackRow): S. Chatterjee, A. Schlesinger, N. Pyenson, F. THEY HAVE BEEN HERE FOR A LIFETIME

142

The highlight of this last school year was the weekend of May 14. It was the event that we had all been waiting for: Our Grad. This event started off during the morning of May 14, as everyone rushed around obtaining tuxedos and making sure that they fit. After we were all ready, we entered our tuxes and set out to the Velan household for our cocktail party. Our next stop was the Four Seasons hotel for the reception where we mingled among our parents, teachers, and friends. For the first hour, we strolled around congratulating, and being congratulated, on surviving. The fashion statements made during this event could have been forshadowing as they hinted at the wild level of conduct which was soon to prevail. After the reception, it was time for the meal. The chicken was reminiscent of the GMAA Banquet, but its excitement paled upon the arrival of Chris. Snelgrove and Eric Seltzer. You guys will always be remembered. The music started soon after and the charge onto the dance floor was led by Zac Grierson and Kippie Clark. This marked the start of the partying. It wasn't long before we left the Four Seasons, stopped by the changing houses, and bussecf off to the Grierson's for the first afterparty. One of the wildest parties of the weekend, this one lasted only two hours before the poUce arrived and shut it down due to excess noise.

Afterwards, we went on a three hour bus tour of the parks in Westmount until it was time for the Feldman's breakfast party. The food was wonderful, but most people spent the morning sleeping off the effects of the long rugnt. From there, it was off to Mike Cope's country house on Lake Memphre Magog where we spent our time relaxing in the sun, playing volleyball, and having fun. This party ended all too soon, and we were forced to return to the busses for the trip back to Montreal. That night, everyone went home(?) to rest up for the next day. Ovir weekend culminated with the barbecue at the Sutcliffe household. During this, our last time together as a class, we calmed down and enjoyed the moment.

THE PRE-UNIVERSITY I FAMILY

OF 1993 Erika Adderly: This year has gone by so fast! To all of my teachers: the work and stress was overwhelming at times, but worth it in the end. Mom, Ray and Eric - I love you -<- Thanks for being there. RW - thanks for ironing my shirt. AB - WRONGO in my table. KB - KEK. JZ - 1st Dum. PR - mon ami quebecois. RK - "I'm scared I wouldn't make any finends KEV!" KJ - My other half. Firsts? 7812 and on! To all my friends new and old, I wish you the best in life! CHEERS to the class of '93!

Neil Aikman: "Today is the FIRST day of the rest of your life" (Incognito). Today is the first day after my 6 years at LCC. This has been a year I will always remember. Not ONLY for the times 1 had, but for the people. Some worried about girls in the school, 1 wouldn't have had it any other way. "What's the end, and what's behind what's stopping that." (TAP). Now I have to start acting responsibly, which should be a stretch. I'm ready to take on the world. I have so many people to thank, so I'd like to thank everyone, you're the greatest group. LIZ, you'll remain in my heart forever. You've helped me so much! THANX Mom + Dad. RH, let's raise our glasses!

Laurent Dagenais: What ayear! I find it difficult to express my feelings towards my concluding year at LCC. As somebody once told me: "Grade twelve is a year to mature." From experiences in my final year, it is very easily said that 1 have matured. Now 1 may look back on my first seventeen ears and be thankful for all that 1 h.ave seen and enjoyed. Next year will be the beginning of a new phase of life where 1 must make something meaningful of myself. Although rll be venturing somewhere in the Wild West searching for higher education, it will be impossible for me to forget the support encountered from my mother, my father, and fellow students throughout my LCC years. Again, thanks for everything and I wish good luck and success to all in the future.

Christopher Frankel: "Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later the man who wins is the man who thinks he can." Willie Goldman: The one philosophy that has stuck with me, tnroughout my scholastic career, was passed on to me by a wise old man. "When Hell freezes over, I'll ski there too." Timothy Leary, the perennial adolescent, once said, "Tune in, turn on, drop out." Our year has gone by very quickly, and a lot has changed. Good luck to all. Rave on!

To his friends and family Derek left his love. Though his accomplishments could hardly be justly rewarded, JF and NT were more than he ever deserved: And to all his other friends, too insignificant to name, he loved you all. Beverley Webster: "The road now stretched against open country, and it occurred to me - not by way of protest, not as a symbol, or anything like that, but merely as a novel experience - that since 1 had disregarded all laws of humanity, 1 might as well disregard the rules of traffic. So 1 crossed to the left side of the highway and checked the feeling, and the feeling was good. It was a pleasant diapnragmal melting, with elements of diffused tactility, all this enhanced by the thought that nothing could be nearer to the elimination of basic physical laws than deliberately driving on the wrong side of the road."" Kevin Yu: Four years at LCC come to an end with the best time in the grade 12 year. Thanks to my parents, teachers and aU my friends for helping me through the year. I wiU always remember hockey talks in Linear Algebra, "ring the beU" joke in Calculus, and the not passable Biology tests. To some of my troubling friends: MW, keep awake and take a course caUed decision making; DS, stop kilUng frees and EP, chiU up. To Mr. Patterson, that it seems the paragraph is not bewhiched. To all whom drive, that is my parking spot. McDonald's anyone? "Live Long & Prosper . . . Remember Me . . ." - Spock Badminton 11-12; ACSL 11-12; VoUeybaU 12; Yearbook 12

Jenn Zeynel: "To wear out is better than to rust out" should be the motto of this year. Never have I worked and played so hard. None of it could have been done without the help of my teachers. Mom & Dad & Chris & my friends. Organizarional skiUs with colored pens (KJ), the LCC male ego (CP), neighbors lawns & coffee talk (CB) B.D. & veggie game and of course Blue Dog & the stupid whistle. We were "Ditchin' 9 3 " and "GGGRRR." Thanks for everything and E.A,, thanks for, you know! "Life ain't all beer and skittles, and more's the pity; but what's the odds, so long as you re happy?" (George Du Maurier).

MEMORIES ONE AND ALL

For most of the Pre-U students, the grad ceremony started at 4:30 pm on May 20, 1993. However for Willie it began a little later. Everyone was looking rather spiffy, especially Sandy who came in his James Bond attire. After the champagne reception in the Senior gym, the grads headed out to the Christou home where a delicious dinner was served during which many chose to cheer on the Habs. Then to Kristine Jones' for the after party. Pia, the Energizer bunny, kept going and going and going; an inspiration to those who were lacking in energy. At the Zeynel household those who had survived through the night were treated to a huge breakfast. To finish off the festivities a mellow Bar-B-Q was held at Rob Kerr's. Many thanks to the Pre-U council for organising the event, and to those who volunteered their homes for our enjoyment.
