Dr. Martin & Sarah Kornblum
Recipients of the Community Chesed Award
Recipients of the Alumni of the Year Award
From Farber Hebrew Day School to the Friends of IDF, Dr. Marty and Sarah Kornblum are known for the way they give - with a full heart and without fanfare, identifying needs and then rolling up their sleeves to do what needs to be done. They have strengthened not only institutions, but the people within them, ensuring that each has the resources to enable them to grow and actualize their potential and dreams. Dr. Marty Kornblum, a New York native, graduated from the Yeshivah of Flatbush and earned his MD from the State University of New York Stony Brook School of Medicine. He served as an Orthopedic resident at William Beaumont Hospital and then as a spinal surgery fellow at the University of Virginia.
Currently, Marty practices as an orthopedic surgeon and spine specialist and is a partner at Mendelson Kornblum Orthopedics. Sarah, a native Michigander, attended both Stern and Queens College in New York and then earned a Master’s degree in Speech Therapy at Adelphi University in Long Island. Given Sarah and Marty’s shared love for Israel, it is fitting that they met at an American Zionist Youth Foundation Israel Advocacy Shabbaton, which was also attended by then Ambassador to the United Nations, Bibi Netanyahu.
It was eighteen years ago that the Kornblums moved back to Michigan, motivated in part by the presence of a vital and strongly Zionist Akiva at which to educate their children. They immediately enrolled their children thereby rekindling a relationship which had begun with Sarah who attended the school through 9th grade. From the outset, Sarah became the consummate PTO volunteer with Marty and their growing family always there to assist in her efforts. During her tenure at Akiva, Sarah chaired the community-wide Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebration for several years and spearheaded both a much needed kitchen renovation in our old building as well as the construction of a new Early Childhood playground. Sarah is currently leading Farber’s Bookstock committee and helping to create a StandWithUs Israel Advocacy program for adults. In addition to his involvement with FHDS, Marty is engaged with numerous Zionist causes fostering a love for Israel and providing critical support to its citizens. He is an advisor to Bnei Akiva of Metro-Detroit and an active contributor to Friends of the IDF, AIPAC, Yashar LaChayal, Machane and Makom Meshutaf, as well as the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews. His association with these organizations has influenced many others in our community to join with their support.
Marty and Sarah are grateful to the school and the nurturing educational environment and solid foundation of values it has instilled in their children, Jacob ’15, Josh ‘17, Joe ’21 and Jonny ‘22. Akiva’s most special aspect, they agree, is its product- students who emerge most importantly as good people and are prepared to serve as future leaders strongly committed to Torah and imbued with a love for Israel.
The FHDS family proudly salutes Dr. Marty and Sarah Kornblum who exemplify generosity and warmth, hard work and a passionate dedication to the State of Israel and its people. Marty and Sarah serve as an example to all they encounter of what it means to live a life with an open hand and an open heart, ready at all times to make a difference.
Mikey and Ariella Skoczylas have been community leaders and active in Yeshivat Akiva’s growth since returning to Michigan in 2009. Their passion for the Jewish community and strong idealistic values have been guiding forces in their involvement in community boards, youth groups, shuls, our school and the Detroit Jewish community at large. Their passion has inspired many to be involved in the growth and development of our wonderful community.
Mikey graduated from Yeshivat Akiva in 2002. He attended Yeshivat Sha’arei Mevaseret Tzion for his gap year in Israel, followed by Yeshiva University’s Sy Syms School of Business where he received a degree in Finance and Accounting. After several years in the work force, Mikey and Ariella moved back to Michigan with Mikey attending Wayne State University Law School. He currently works as an attorney at Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer & Weiss. Mikey has served on the board of Farber Hebrew Day School for the past five years, and currently serves as a Vice President on its executive board. Mikey has also served as a board member for Hillel of Metro Detroit- the Foundation for Campus Life, and serves on the Central East NCSY Youth Commission. Mikey is also active in Federation and Young Israel of Southfield.
Upon completion of Yeshivat Akiva, Ariella spent her gap year at Midreshet Harova. She continued her educational career attending Yeshiva University’s Sy Syms School of Business followed by receiving a Masters in Education from Madonna University. Ariella is a staple at Farber Hebrew Day School, not only as a parent, but as one of our esteemed Judaic Studies staff members. She shares her passion for Torah by imparting her knowledge to our students on a daily basis. She also leads a weekly online shiur for women in the community.
Ariella and Mikey are individuals who live by a strong code of ethics. That character, coupled with their passion for Jewish education and emphasis on community values, has aided them in becoming role models to many, including their four children: Aron (2 nd Grade), J (1 st Grade), Abie (Nursery 2) and Goldie (18 months). They are proud to support Farber Hebrew Day School and the vital role it serves as a model of Jewish educational excellence, chesed, and Zionism throughout the Detroit Jewish community. Ariella and Mikey plan to make Aliyah with their four children this summer, taking the lessons imparted to them from their alma mater.
The most horrific and awesome volcano eruption that has ever occurred in the history of the world is known as the Toba Supereruption (you would think scientists would have been a little more creative in their naming mechanism). This powerful eruption gave birth to what is known as the Toba Catastrophe Theory which posits that all of humanity was on the verge of extinction due to a resulting 10-year-long winter which nearly destroyed all vegetation and caused a severe drought. Estimates range that the global population dropped between 3,000 and 10,000 individuals.
Supporters of this well regarded theory are confronted with a particularly difficult question: with the global population at such dangerously low levels, how did humanity rally and survive? As Professor Jonathan Haidt’s notes in his exquisite book, The Righteous Mind
“Let’s imagine that 95% of the food on Earth magically disappears tonight, guaranteeing that almost all of us will starve to death within two months. Law and order collapse. Chaos and mayhem ensue. Who among us will still be alive a year from now? Will it be the biggest, strongest, and most violent individuals in each town? Or will it be the people who manage to work together in groups to monopolize, hide, and share the remaining food supplies among themselves?” (Haidt, Jonathan. The Righteous Mind. New York Vintage: 2013 pg. 252)
Haidt asserts that humanity likely flourished as a result of communal cohesiveness, where individuals and families did not prioritize their personal needs but rather cooperated with their surrounding communities to ensure that communal needs were primarily being met. Several examples are given of the dominant male who tried to take charge of a community only to have his rule overturned by the masses as a result of them feeling that he was too controlling and did not represent the needs and concerns of the community.
Both of our honorees this evening are couples that are well in touch with our community and have humbly and unpretentiously been actively involved in our school. Mikey and Ariella, both alum, have lived a very Farber Hebrew Day School centric life. Mikey has been a long-standing board member (and executive committee member), while Ariella has been a mainstay as a teacher in our Judaic Studies curriculum. Their upcoming Aliyah is a true testament to our success as a school in seeing our mission statement lived out.
The school owes a tremendous amount of Hakarat Hatov to Marty and Sarah Kornblum. From their four boys firming up the Farber athletic teams, to their unyielding commitment to anything Farber related and their willingness to roll up their sleeves for any school cause, we, Farber Hebrew Day School, are exceptionally fortunate to have the Kornblums in our community.
May we continue to be blessed with families that prioritize the communal good over the needs of individuals. However, we should rest assured that if we ever faced a Supereruption again, we would be in good hands with our honorees at the helm.
Shalom:
The Ba-al Shem Tov asks an intriguing question regarding the special prayer insertion we add in our Shavuot prayers – chag hashavuot z’man matan toratainu “the Shavuot celebration – the time of the giving of the Torah.” He questions why we say “the time of the giving of the Torah” and not - chag hashavuot, zman kabalat toratainu “the time of the receiving of the Torah.” Why not stress the receiving of the Torah by the Jewish nation over the giving of the Torah by the Almighty?
Ba-al Shem Tov answers that: at the time of Revelation the only certainty was that HaShem gave the Torah to us. The act of receiving of the Torah – the act of embracing and assimilating the values and the fealty to Torah and halacha on the other hand - is a decision left up to each and every one of us as individuals. According to Ba-al Shem Tov, this is the challenge we stare in the eyes every Shavuot when we annually reenact that moment in history when God presented us with His holy Torah.
Both distinguished honoree couples have heard the clarion call of the Torah and the communal obligations that come with an observant lifestyle. Dr. Martin and Sarah Kornblum receiving the Community Chesed Award have been stalwarts of our school for decades. The value of Religious Zionism has especially animated the Kornblums, and Akiva/Farber Hebrew Day School was that single school in our community promoting such a proud education for their children. They have been involved over decades in every facet of school life. The Kornblum home is also legendary in our community for its warmth and openness to all.
Mikey and Ariella Skoczylas, recipients of the Alumni of the Year Award have been engaged at every level with the school. Mikey has been an active board member and on the Executive Committee for years. He is always volunteering and contributing of his time, ideas, and energy whenever and wherever it has been needed. Ariella is a valued teacher of Jewish Studies and serves as a religious role model for our students. She demonstrates that one can be a well-educated religious women who lives by the Torah values we hold dear. We will sorely miss Mikey, Ariella, and their children and wish them the very best in their forthcoming Aliyah.
We at Farber Hebrew Day School are truly the ones honored by these two special couples and we thank them for all that they do for us and the community and for all they will continue to do for Klal Yisrael.

The Yeshivat Akiva endowment fund was established to enhance Farber’s educational program and provide scholarship assistance to families in need.
The Yeshivat Akiva endowment fund is a permanent fund, and earnings generated from endowment fund investments provide perpetual support for Farber Hebrew Day School-Yeshivat Akiva. Resources flow into the endowment from direct contributions and from tributes which may be directed either to the general endowment or to specific, named funds. The tribute program is administered by the school’s office. Tributes may be used to commemorate any occasion, and all tributes are acknowledged to both the sender and the recipient.
Over the years many of our friends have established named funds within the overall Yeshivat Akiva endowment fund. You are welcome to direct your tributes to any of the following:

We love you, and hope that you have an incredibly safe journey home, and pray that you keep the light on for us. Saying goodbye doesn’t mean anything. It’s the time we spent together that matters, not how we left it.
We are truly grateful to have you as friends. You are an inspiration to so many current and future leaders of our community.
You give generously in every way and you are a reflection of the best of Jewish values.
Your dedication benefiting Farber Hebrew Day School is much appreciated by all.
Congratulations on this well-deserved honor. Throughout our many years as students at Yeshivat Akiva, we have witnessed firsthand your hard work and dedication.
You have always been amongst the first to volunteer for most school activities, including mom’s tenure as PTO president.
It is the partnership of the many parent volunteers with the school staff and administration that has made our school a warm and loving place for all.
We can only hope that one day we will be able to give back to our school in a similar manner. We are so proud of you and are so appreciative of your commitment to charitable endeavors.
Love, Jacob, Josh, Joe and Jonny
Thank you to the entire Farber administration and staff, from the ECC through the high school.

What you have done for this community has been extraordinary. We, the Farber and YIS communities, as well as the greater Metro Detroit Jewish community will miss you terribly.
On a personal level Mikey, I have always viewed you more as a brother than as a friend. My sadness in seeing you and your family depart is assuaged only by my knowledge that in moving to Israel you are fulfilling the lifelong dreams and aspirations that were planted here at Farber.
IY”H, may your family stay connected with us here in Michigan and more importantly may your family continue to grow and prosper in Eretz Yisroel.
P.S. If you live in Birmingham, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, or West Bloomfield, I’d greatly appreciate your vote for State Representative on August 7th in the Republican primary.
We are going to miss you so much, but we know we will see you soon. Thanks for always being the best and an inspiration to us all.
We can’t wait to visit you in Israel!!!!
