LEADERSHIP

Dear La Porte ISD Stakeholders,

Today is a great day to be a Bulldog! As we have wrapped up another remarkable school year, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to you for your steadfast commitment to our district’s mission of delivering a world class education to our students. There is much to celebrate!

In late May, over 500 seniors graduated from La Porte High School and The Academy of Viola DeWalt High School, equipped with the education needed for success in college, the workforce, or the military. This achievement is our ultimate responsibility and goal as a public school. It is the collective effort of our LP Family, fostering collaboration and a deep-rooted care for our students and community, that continues to drive these positive outcomes. Thank you for being part of this journey!

Many activities are taking place within our district this summer, including a range of enrichment camps covering STEM, athletics and more. These engaging activities serve to foster academic, athletic, and artistic prowess among our students. Additionally, our staff members are benefiting from numerous professional learning opportunities aimed at enhancing their skills. For more information on our summer camps, visit our Summer Camps & Activities page at https://www.lpisd.org/summer-learning/summer-camps-activities.

As your travels take you around La Porte over the summer, you will continue to see progress on the construction of the new Bulldog Stadium and Development Center, and new playgrounds going up at some elementary campuses. But there is also much going on inside campuses related to LP Bond 23. In addition to some infrastructural enhancements, crews will also be painting and upgrading campus stages and sound systems.

La Porte ISD is rising to the challenge of doing more with less as we navigate the lack of state funding. Despite financial constraints, the district is committed to maintaining high-quality education by optimizing resources and implementing innovative strategies. This spring, the Board of Trustees and I made the decision that we would not attempt to close our budget deficit by laying off teachers and staff. In fact, the Board is seeking to give a 3 percent pay raise to teachers and staff who work tirelessly to ensure that students continue to receive excellent instruction and support. This is yet another example of the Board’s commitment to our success.

Through all our efforts, La Porte ISD will continue to shine in the classrooms, music halls, fields and courts as every student’s success is our number one priority.

Wishing you a safe and relaxing summer, with La Porte pride,

NEW FACES

The LPISD Board of Trustees welcomes

Karen Wheeler-Hall to Trustee Position Five

Mrs. Wheeler-Hall taught at La Porte High School for 21 years and then worked as an Educational Diagnostician for La Porte ISD for nine years. In 2021 she retired from education and bought the Rothe Companies, a Women-Owned Small Business that contracts with NASA and the Department of Defense. Karen has been a resident of La Porte since 1963 and is a 1979 graduate of LPHS. All three of her children are LPHS graduates as well. Her son Rowen (Class of 2023) has Down syndrome and has been a part of the Life Skills/Focus program and currently attends the Bulldog Bridge.

Julie Abram promoted to Deputy Superintendent over Academics

Mrs. Abram has served as an instructional leader, district and campus administrator and classroom teacher for more than 32 years, including the last three in La Porte ISD as the district’s Executive Director of Teaching and Professional Learning. Since her arrival in 2021, Mrs. Abram has provided guidance and oversight to all aspects of the curriculum and instructional programs, including the design and implementation of STEM academies at seven elementary campuses. She is being promoted to replace Dr. Rebecca Brown, who will serve as the Superintendent of Schools in Dickinson ISD.

Brad Rogers named Managing Director of Technology

Mr. Rogers has dedicated the past 26 years to the field of K-12 technology. Throughout his career, he has worked in all areas of technology services from technician to system administrator. He joined the La Porte ISD Technology Department in 2010 as a system administrator and replaces former Managing Director Eddie Hill, who retired in June after serving in that role for the past 15 years.

Jason McConnell named Principal of La Porte Junior High School

Mr. McConnell, also known as “Mac,” began his education career in 1997 right here in La Porte ISD as a government teacher and basketball coach. From 2007 to 2017, he held numerous leadership positions in the district, including the Associate Principal for La Porte Junior High from 2009-2011, and Associate Principal of La Porte High School from 2011-2017. He returns to LPISD after serving as a Principal in Dickinson ISD since 2021. McConnell was Dickinson’s Secondary Principal of the Year in 2022-23.

Paula Jackson named Executive Director of Human Resources

Mrs. Jackson has served in education for 30 years, holding various leadership roles, including Academic Dean, Assistant Principal, and Principal, before coming to La Porte ISD in 2020 as Director of Human Resources. Most recently, she has served as Executive Director of Secondary School Leadership since 2022. Ms. Jackson is looking forward to serving the district in her new role.

Angela Garza-Viator named Executive Director of Teaching & Learning

Ms. Garza-Viator began her education career as a student teacher in La Porte ISD, and she has been here ever since. After several years as a classroom teacher, she became a campus administrator in 2002 and has served in Assistant Principal and Principal roles at several elementary campuses, including Jennie Reid Elementary School, which was named a National Blue Ribbon School under Garza-Viator’s leadership. She will transition to her new position from Human Resources, where she has been its Executive Director since 2017.

Dr. Alicia Upchurch Named Executive Director of School Leadership

Dr. Upchurch has been an educator and administrator in LPISD for almost 25 years, starting at Bayshore Elementary in 2000. She has worked at several campuses over the years and served as Principal at James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus for almost five years. She will transition from Executive Director of Elementary School Leadership, a position she has held since 2022, to Executive Director of School Leadership, where she will supervise all campuses in the district.

LP BOND 2023

It has been about a year since demolition of the old Bulldog Stadium took place, and the landscape has changed significantly at the site. Construction crews have worked nights and weekends to help ensure that this project remains within the 18–24-month time frame for completion. In the photos, you can see the completion of the unique “horse-shoe” end of the stadium with seating being constructed on all sides. The press box is coming along with exterior siding and blocking underway. Much of the parking is already paved and completed on the site.

As of press time, the Multi-Purpose facility had most of the steel frame completed and the second level flooring was underway. The structure that will hold the LED board for the stadium can be seen on top of the building.

Additionally this summer, several more projects will be happening all around the district, thanks to the 2023 LP Bond.

• Playground replacements and upgrades at various campuses

• Interior painting at several campuses

• Sound system upgrades on elementary stages

• Various infrastructural upgrades and improvements throughout LP

Much of this work is now underway to prepare our campuses for teachers and students when they return in August.

GRADUATION

La Porte ISD proudly bestowed more than 500 diplomas to deserving graduates in late May. While commencement for The Academy of Viola DeWalt High School was held at the Bulldog Centre, as is traditional, La Porte High School’s graduation took place at Deer Park’s Abshier Stadium due to ongoing construction at the new Bulldog Stadium site. We are grateful not only to La Porte High School seniors who helped us choose this alternate site, but also to our neighbors in Deer Park ISD for going out of their way to provide a memorable ceremony for our seniors and community.

DOUBLE DISTINCTION

In a remarkable display of academic prowess, identical twins Lynn and Ann Nguyen were named as La Porte High School’s 2024 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

What’s even more outstanding about this scholarly feat is that they follow in the footsteps of their older sister Lily, who was La Porte High School’s valedictorian in 2021.

Throughout their high school years, Lynn and Ann were not only academic trailblazers but also active participants in various extracurricular activities, including the high school orchestra, where they both played violin.

Despite their individual achievements, Lynn and Ann never viewed their accomplishments in isolation. Instead, they formed a dynamic duo, supporting each other every step of the way. Whether it was late-night study sessions or pep talks before exams, their unwavering solidarity served as a source of strength.

“We were fine with me being valedictorian and her being salutatorian,” Lynn said. “But we had competitions through the years such as orchestra chairs.”

“I have watched Lynn and Ann excel since the day they started school here four years ago, and I am not surprised in the least that they posted the top two GPAs – or that there is such a minuscule difference in their GPAs,” said La Porte High School Principal Carlin Grammer.

Lynn said she was impacted by many teachers, but no one more than Rachel Samm, her elementary music teacher. “She got me into music,” Lynn said, adding that violin not only served as the instrument of her arts education, but that she also plays as a hobby. (She also started crocheting recently to pass what little free time she has.)

Ann, meanwhile, gave much credit to Elaine Finnen, who taught her to love science at College Park Elementary School. “She ran the science club, and we did full-scale labs,” Ann said. “I became interested in science very quickly.”

Her favorite memory, meanwhile, happened in academic decathlon practice.

“We were practicing impromptu speaking and the first time, I cried,” said Ann, who admitted to being the shy, quiet type. “It made me a better speaker, and I also made a lot of friends in the class.”

The twins also acknowledged the sacrifices made by their parents, particularly since they attended all 12 years in La Porte ISD as open enrollment transfers from another school district. Moreover, they recognized that their success is not merely a reflection of their own efforts but also a testament to the nurturing environment of La Porte High School – one of the main reasons their parents chose to enroll them in La Porte schools.

“Their academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to learning have not only brought honor to themselves but have also enriched our school community,” said Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson. “We are proud to have played a part in their educational journey and wish them continued success in all their future endeavors.”

Looking ahead, Lynn and Ann plan to join their older sister at the University of Texas at Austin, where they are poised to study healthcare administration as Lily continues studying to become a medical doctor.

SPRING ATHLETICS

LPHS

Has Strong Representation at State Meets

La Porte High School junior Aryssa Rodriguez finished sixth this spring at the UIL State Track & Field Championships in the 300-meter hurdles.

Aryssa was the first La Porte High School hurdler to qualify for state since 2010, when Connie Lindsay set the school record of 42.00s, breaking the previous record held by Aryssa’s mother and coach Carolina Rodriguez and two others.

“I will say it is Aryssa’s goal before she graduates to break the school record,” her mom said. “Her personal best is 43.50.”

La Porte High School junior Ruquayya Soudine represented La Porte High School on March 16 at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s state meet where she finished fourteenth.

On Feb. 27, Ruquayya also won the Region IV Championship Meet at Alvin High School. With her wins, Ruquayya became the first ever female Regional Champion in La Porte High School history and joins D’Lisa Promise (2018) as the only female lifters to qualify for the THSWPA State Championships.

La Porte High School senior Ben Tercero on Feb. 24 took 12th overall in the 100m breaststroke at the UIL State Swim & Dive Meet in Austin.

He qualified for State after finishing second in the Regional Championships. Along the way, he set two La Porte High School records, and was later selected for the 2024 Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association 5A All-State 2nd Team.

These accomplishments make him one of the most accomplished swimmers in school history.

Former Bulldog coach inducted into GHFCA Hall of Honor

Longtime La Porte High School Head Football Coach Jeff LaReau was inducted into the Greater Houston Coaches Association Hall of Honor on May 5. LaReau was honored at the May 8th LPISD Board Meeting for this distinguished award.

Under LaReau’s leadership, the Bulldogs captured three district championships and made 12 postseason appearances, including two trips to the state quarterfinals. He also owns more playoff wins than any coach in La Porte history with 15.

“Coach LaReau’s influence transcended wins and losses,” said current Head Coach Kevin Berneathy. “He was a mentor, a guiding light, and a source of inspiration for countless individuals.”

La Reau retired in 2019 and was the head coach of the Bulldogs for 14 seasons.

Bulldogs Finish Strong on the Diamonds

The La Porte High School baseball and softball teams finished strong to end the 2023-2024 athletic season.

Baseball finished third in District 18-5A and competed in the Bi-District Playoff Qualifiers this spring. This marks the 22nd year in a row that baseball has reached the playoffs.

Softball finished fourth in District 18-5A and also competed in the Bi-District Playoff Qualifiers this spring.

Bowling Team Competes at State

The La Porte High School Varsity Bowling Team wrapped up its 2023-24 season by finishing 16th in the Texas High School State Bowling Tournament in Fort Worth.

Austin Goetz finished eighth in the state in the singles competition and second at regionals. The team qualified for the state tourney by finishing second in the regionals.

FINE ARTS

District Recognized Nationally for Music Education

La Porte ISD has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The National Association of Music Merchants Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.

The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to school districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. This is the third consecutive year for La Porte ISD to receive the honor.

“We put an emphasis on the arts from the time students enter school, and the vast majority of our students have received at least some level of music education in La Porte ISD,” said Matthew Burke, La Porte ISD’s Director of Performing and Visual Arts. “We are pleased to be recognized with this designation.”

UIL Success for La Porte ISD Students

La Porte students saw much success this spring at the UIL Fine Arts Competitions. Students from the district competed against their peers from across the state in Art, Band, Choir, Dance, Orchestra and Theatre. LPISD students received:

GROWING OUR OWN Cultivating Future Teachers with Homegrown Talent

La Porte ISD proudly inaugurated the Grow Your Own Program during the 2023-24 academic year, with the objective of nurturing prospective educators from within our community. This initiative, a component of our Teaching and Training program of study, represents a significant addition to the district and our Career and Technical Education offerings.

In partnership with La Porte Elementary School, eight advanced-level program students were paired with a mentor teacher to facilitate hands-on, work-based learning in the classroom. These students visited La Porte Elementary weekly, providing classroom support across various grade levels. The program employed a gradual release model, wherein the students commenced the year by observing their mentor teachers and progressed to planning and delivering their own lessons.

“It was really exciting to see the high school students come in and work with our students,” said La Porte Elementary School Principal Karen Lawley. “The teachers were also thrilled because they had an opportunity to mentor the high school students. So, it benefited both teachers and students who aspire to be teachers.”

This innovative program not only enriches the educational experiences of participating students but also fortifies the future of education within our district by cultivating homegrown talent.

Looking Ahead

In the 2024-25 school year, the district will offer a fourth-year class through which students can become certified as an educational aide.

STEM/ROBOTICS

STEM Highlights From This Year

This year has been a remarkable one for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in La Porte ISD. From innovative projects to impressive competitions, our students and teachers have excelled, showcasing creativity, dedication, and a passion for learning. Here are some of the key highlights and surprises from this year, along with a glimpse into what to look forward to next year.

• Our district’s robotics teams have had an outstanding year with 13 teams competing in the FIRST Lego League Intra-district Competition. Sponsored by LyondellBasell, students competed in robotics games, innovative projects, and Core Values challenges. In an exciting turn of events, La Porte Junior High emerged as the 2024 Legacy Battle Bots Champions of the district for the first time in the seven-year history of the competition. La Porte High School’s robotics team, The Spicy Chihuahuas, participated for the second year in FIRST Lego League, doubling their program participation.

• The 2023-24 school year saw an expansion in our STEM academies to include second-grade students at all elementary campuses.

• The introduction of advanced biotechnology courses in high schools has enriched our students’ learning experiences. Teachers have reported increased engagement and enthusiasm for STEM subjects.

• Supported by generous grant funding from the La Porte Education Foundation, every PreK, kindergarten and first grade teacher welcomed reusable STEM Maker Carts in their classrooms. These carts include STEM curriculum cards that allow students to collaborate on mini challenges.

• In collaboration with the La Porte High School STEM Program, fifth-grade students visited the Pemberton Planetarium, Animal Resource Program, and High School STEM Lab as a specially designed field trip. Most exciting of all was the unique opportunity to take 50 La Porte fourth and fifth graders to the 2024 Astronaut Graduation at NASA in March. Students cheered on the ten new graduates with specially designed posters created in the STEM labs.

Building on this year’s success, La Porte ISD plans to expand our STEM programs further by introducing new courses, as well as expanding our coding and robotics clubs throughout the district. James H. Baker Sixth Grade campus will also be starting a new STEM Explorations elective in the 2024-25 school year designed to prepare students for the new Project Lead the Way STEM program beginning at both Lomax and La Porte Junior High Schools.

We are set to launch a STEM Innovation Hub, a dedicated space for interdisciplinary projects and research. This hub will serve as a collaborative environment for students, teachers, and community partners to work on cutting-edge STEM initiatives.

PROJECT LEAD THE WAY

Junior Highs Adding New Courses Geared in Robotics and Computer Science

La Porte ISD is thrilled to announce the expansion of our STEM and Career & Technical Education opportunities at La Porte Junior High and Lomax Junior High with the introduction of two Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Gateway courses for the 2024-2025 school year: Automation and Robotics, and Computer Science for Innovators and Makers. These courses are directly aligned to the High School’s PLTW courses and CTE Pathway.

In Automation and Robotics, students will learn about the history and impact of automation and robotics as they explore mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Using the VEX Robotics platform, students will apply what they know to design and program traffic lights, robotic arms, and more.

In Computer Science for Innovators and Makers, students will learn about programming for the physical world by blending hardware design and software development, allowing students to discover computer science concepts and skills by creating personally relevant, tangible, and shareable projects.

These semester-long courses will form a full-year elective option for seventh and eighth grade students, offering engaging, project-based STEM learning experiences. This curriculum is designed to prepare students for STEM CTE programs in high school.

The initial implementation of these PLTW Gateway courses is made possible by generous PLTW grants. We look forward to inspiring and empowering our students with these exciting new opportunities.

Project Launch @ UHCL Completes Inaugural Year

Project Launch was a partnership with University of Houston-Clear Lake through which gifted and talented students in grades five and six took mini-courses at the university. Students not only experienced college-level learning but were able to study concepts not regularly taught in their LPISD curriculum.

These courses were taught by college professors or graduate students and were on topics like graphic novels, science exploration, fine arts, coding, video game design, and animation. Students worked with their district peers and created projects to exhibit their learning with their families and peers at culminating semester showcases.

We are excited to continue our partnership with UHCL next year and continue to serve our students in grades five and six. Our sixth graders will be our first group of students to have participated for two years, so we are planning new minicourses for them for 2024-25.

While new courses for next school year have not been finalized, students were surveyed about their interests. The following are some of the more popular responses.

COMING NEXT SCHOOL YEAR

Starting next school year, La Porte ISD will be moving to ParentSquare for all of its district and campus communications.

The goal of this software is to enhance the quality of communications at all levels between our LPISD staff and our parents and community. The ParentSquare app is a great tool that will simplify and improve the many various communications our community receives from the district, their individual campuses, and their student’s teachers.

“ParentSquare is passionate about better connecting schools with families to improve student outcomes and school success. To that end, we are constantly innovating and thinking about how we can apply innovation in other areas to school-home interaction, and bring about new ways to communicate and build relationships.” -ParentSquare Website

This platform was used in the spring with various teachers in La Porte ISD to test its effectiveness and ease of use.

“We are looking forward to implementing this wonderful tool in the 2024-2025 school year for La Porte ISD. With ParentSquare, we will be able to streamline and simplify our communications to all stakeholders through one platform.” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Dustin Bromley.

For those who wish to use the ParentSquare app, you can download it from your phone’s app store. Without the app, users will still receive all district communications through calls, texts and emails with their provided eSchool contact information.

More information about this new tool will be shared at the beginning of the school year.

FINANCIAL EXCELLENCE

Under the leadership of Chief Financial Officer Stacey McDowell, La Porte ISD’s Business Office has received its tenth consecutive Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Association of School Business Officials International.

The award recognizes districts that have met the program’s high standards for financial reporting and transparency. La Porte ISD’s Certificate of Excellence is for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ended 2023.

Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada also awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to La Porte ISD for its comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2023.

This is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and it is the tenth consecutive year for La Porte ISD to receive the honor.
