ur 2019 Annual Review is a time to pause and look back at what the Lord has done. Like our God, the things He has done are deep and wide. It is also a time to give account of His faithfulness and our stewardship of His generosity.

Last year, we focused on two words – “We Believe!” In fact, we commenced our school year with the enduring song We Believe by the Newsboys. The words explain, in part, what makes us stand out as a school and what we offer our families in a world that has virtually abandoned the truths of Christianity. The growth of our campus, the gains of our student body, the generosity of our givers, the greatness of our stories all stem from one thing - the magnificent grace of our good God. If you are a part of our history, rejoice in this review. If you have yet to experience the extraordinary family of Little Rock Christian Academy, we invite you to come and see. Study this retrospective and visit us in person. I’m confident you’ll see the difference. Gary B. Arnold, Ed. D. President / Head of School

We Believe In this time of desperation When all we know is doubt and fear There is only One Foundation We believe, we believe In this broken generation When all is dark, You help us see There is only One Salvation We believe, we believe We believe in God the Father We believe in Jesus Christ We believe in the Holy Spirit And He’s given us new life We believe in the crucifixion We believe that He conquered death We believe in the resurrection And He’s comin’ back again, we believe So, let our faith be more than anthems Greater than the songs we sing And in our weakness and temptations We believe, we believe! Let the lost be found and the dead be raised! In the here and now, let love invade! Let the church live love our God will see We believe, we believe! And the gates of hell will not prevail! For the power of God, has torn the vail! Now we know Your love will never fail! We believe, we believe! Written by Travis Ryan, Richie Fike and Matt Hooper

HOUSES OF WARRIORVILLE What started as an affectionate nickname for the Elementary building has grown into official identities for each division of Little Rock Christian. Elementary, Middle School, Junior High, and High School have become the houses of LOVE, JOY, ENTHUSIASM, and WARRIORS.

LOVE

Many thoughts come to mind when you think of the word love. The definition of the word that I prefer to use is based on the best interest. In the House of Love, teachers are always striving to love students in their best interest. Whether it is individualized teaching so a student grasps a concept, or praying for a child to grow in specific areas, we daily desire to love students in their best interest. This is the love that can be shown only by the power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of teachers and staff pouring out on our students. - Ann Chami, Head of Lower School

JOY

Psalm 28:7, “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.” The Middle School t-shirt displays this scripture giving proper perspective for all we do in the House of Joy. Development of children in 5th and 6th grades produces many physical, mental, social, and spiritual changes. Our Middle School faculty is dedicated to nurturing the whole child in age-appropriate ways. Research reveals that belonging is a foundational component of their educational success. Strong teacher-student and student-student relationships are critical. Advisory groups and the Middle School house system are two intentional tools for building community. We use a balanced approach which includes instruction, discussion, collaboration, and reflection to engage and empower students for optimal growth. - LeAnn Murry, Middle School Assistant Principal

HOUSES OF WARRIORVILLE

ENTHUSIASM

The House of Enthusiasm is best envisioned as a beautiful stage set for the powerful drama of adolescent spirit and development. Our students live in a world brimming with excitement and countless changes. As they dynamically develop in character, they are guided by teachers and God, the ultimate director. Daily, our teachers hit the lights, cue the music, and engross students in performances that advance each child’s academic story. Furthermore, students are empowered to tackle lead roles in arts, athletics, social houses, clubs, and Bible studies. For them, living a life full of ENTHUSIASM is more than simply being virtuous, it means living recklessly abandoned for God. Passionately living for HIS support and acceptance, our students exude this passion in every aspect of their daily lives. They have much to learn, but there is much to learn from them. Enthusiasm is what makes a junior high student a true showstopper.

WARRIORS

The House of Warriors is about creating depth in the student experience. Deeper learning, deeper relationships, deeper faith. At its core, the High School experience, through the lens of a biblical worldview, aims to connect thinking and learning while living out the Christian faith. In Arts, Athletics, and Academics, students are wading into the deeper end of the pool. They are expected to actively engage their individual learning, work through increasingly complex experiences, and connect learning with life outside the classroom. We view this work as missional, equipping the Christian thinkers of tomorrow in order that they may be lacking nothing. - Dr. Justin Smith, Head of Upper School

“WHAT DO YOU DO WITH A MIR ACLE?”

W

arrior parent and hand surgeon, Dr. Jeanine Andersson shared at a recent LRCA faculty meeting her dynamic account of navigating “dark days” with God’s transformational power. She and her husband, Thomas have four elementary age children. Thomas has leukemia and their youngest child has Type 1 diabetes. Although very blessed, they are no strangers to dealing with challenges. In January 2017, Jeanine was also diagnosed with cancer. She had surgery at MD Anderson in April. Jeanine recalls feeling as if she had “never been cured” though and experienced unusual symptoms and pelvic pain through fall. She persisted until she had a CT scan, which was inconclusive. Feeling frustrated and invalidated, Jeanine returned to Arkansas for medical care. Her symptoms worsened through July 2018 when she experienced debilitating pain while on a family vacation and had to return home. An MRI revealed Jeanine had an 8.5 cm abdominal tumor. “The world got quiet and we got down to business.” With a thriving practice and a young family, Jeanine was confused about God’s timing. She returned to MD Anderson for treatment as well as began writing letters to her children, making arrangements and planning her own funeral. She emailed Dr. Arnold and Ann Chami about pulling her kids from school to be in Texas during her treatment. LRCA’s elementary teachers stayed in close communication. Several consistently face-timed with the Andersson children. One teacher traveled to Houston to help. “The community around us rallied,” Jeanine said of God’s provision. “I get goosebumps talking about it.” Fall 2018 brought radiation treatments and chemotherapy at MD Anderson. The medical staff noticed her “joy was in Jesus.” She listened to Christian music during her treatments and witnessed to those around her. Jeanine realized her care team was not optimistic. In December, she was at the point where she could give up or find hope. Back in Arkansas, she met with a new doctor and another surgery was on her horizon. Ironically, everywhere she turned friends, neighbors and spiritual leaders shared similar biblical accounts of believing, acting and healing. “People felt like I was going to be healed,” she says. On January 10, Jeanine went into major surgery to remove the large abdominal mass. However, there was no tumor. No cancer was found. “There is no medical reason I should be standing in front of you…cancer-free,” she emotionally proclaims to the LRCA staff at the August meeting. “I have a testimony, a story to tell. You all rallied around my family with love and your prayers. You all matter. Prayer matters. I am humbled and grateful for you all. Thank you! What do you do with a miracle? I hope to be able to tell that one day.”

WARRIOR CLUB

ittle Rock Christian’s athletic booster club tirelessly pursues the goal of supporting 38 junior high and high school athletic teams and four competitive spirit squads. Money raised through the Warrior Store, the annual spring golf tournament, concessions, ticket sales, sponsorships, and the sale of advertising spaces at athletic facilities all goes back into the needs of athletes of all ages.

In his third year as Warrior Club President, Fred Lord says, “Warrior Club is here to support and enhance the student athlete experience, from 7th grade all the way through graduation. Warrior Club listens to needs from the coaches, administrators, and the students themselves to make sure they have the necessary resources to be successful…both on the playing field and in the classroom.” Little Rock Christian has experienced God’s provision this year through very generous capital gifts to enhance the educational experience and expand training and competition facilities. Warrior Club has come alongside to support and furnish those expansions. Athletic Director Johnny Watson is first to recognize that the opportunity to train athletes to grow in their love for Jesus is the most important instruction that we offer students of all ages. Warrior Club works to encourage and equip the coaches who are devoted to mentoring Warriors. Fred reflects, “I feel extremely blessed to be part of the LRCA community. God has poured out his blessings upon us, and continues to do so. May we walk worthy and always remember that everything we accomplish is for His glory, not ours. Karen and I love this school. Both of our boys have attended LRCA since kindergarten, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.”

PARENT TEACHER FELLOWSHIP

B

eing a part of a fellowship means individuals have a camaraderie derived from shared interests. A community develops from foundational commonalities. Every year, the Parent Teacher Fellowship joins with Little Rock Christian to galvanize that shared interest…that special community. PTF works to better the school and expand the learning and growth of the children of Warriorville. PTF encourages fellowship and supports families by hosting various activities throughout the year. School-wide events bring all age groups together, while building-specific endeavors are tailored toward ageappropriate interests. Classrooms are stocked and faculty encouraged throughout the year. Teachers and staff enjoy “Appreciation” meals and treats beginning with professional development meetings in August, and continuing through the holidays and the end of the year. PTF funded enhancements are also felt and enjoyed campuswide. In 2018-19, PTF designated funding for over $108,000 in campus security initiatives, middle school, junior high, and high school furniture, a new Pre-K playground, Learner Services technology, Fine Arts supplies and opportunities, professional development, and more! Fundraisers such as Warrior Blitz, Wild About Warriors, Kroger cards, Box Tops for Education, and Amazon Smile, as well as corporate sponsorships, make the funds for PTF’s budget available. The fellowship between LRCA parents and teachers is truly an extraordinary blessing!

o. Where. Else.

Two exceptional facilities in two years. Paid in full, using zero dollars from tuition. How do you spell G-I-F-T from G-O-D? Over $20,000,000 donated specifically for these capital projects which enhance the LRCA educational experience and prepare us for the future. On top of that, 18 acres valued at $1,200,000 were added to the campus for future development. The Indoor Athletic Training Facility opened in August 2018 and has provided state of the art sheltered practice space for football, soccer, wrestling, cheer, baseball and other teams. Elementary and middle school students have also enjoyed countless hours of fun and games on the turf field. No. Where. Else. Warrior Blitz continues to fund equipment and curriculum which propels a Little Rock Christian education forward. Fall 2018 was the fourth year of Blitz, a fundraiser which is designed and executed each year by the Parent Teacher Fellowship and the Advancement office so that 100% of the money raised goes directly to our kids’ education. No magazine or candy sales. No running laps. The generosity of ALL Warrior families is celebrated with Warrior Blitz! No. Where. Else. LRCA is simply the best! With a solid biblical foundation of board governance, and under Dr. Arnold’s leadership for the past 12 years, God is sought, taught and trusted. Our team of Principals loves our children and leads faculty in developing the skills necessary for effective teaching in the 21st century. Parents and grandparents pray, volunteer, and give to lift our school to new heights. You partner with LRCA to build the best school around so that your children, grandchildren, and the community can experience the joy and challenge of a college preparatory education that is founded on Jesus – The Way, The Truth, and The Life. Thank you for your generosity in 2018-19! God is using YOU in the lives of young people who are created in His image to build His kingdom. The best is yet to come! SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE - SUSAN MARTIN

W

arrior parent, board member, and now a Warrior grandparent - Susan Martin is no stranger to service or to Little Rock Christian. She details the importance of a Christian education and why she continues to serve:

Why do you continue to serve, volunteer your time, and give financially to LRCA? To me, nothing in the Christian life is more important than making disciples, and no disciples are more important than our children. Little Rock Christian Academy equips our students academically and spiritually to take the next steps into adulthood. At LRCA they are prepared to live out their purposes with excellence and grace. What better mission could I support? As a grandparent, what excites you the most about your granddaughter, Vera, attending LRCA? Everything you hear about having a grandchild is exponentially true! They are such a JOY! The most exciting thing about Vera attending LRCA is that she is being taught by the most excellent faculty and staff on the planet. The expertise and commitment of the educational team at LRCA is second to none. They are constantly raising the bar in all areas of student development for the benefit of the children in their charge, and they love the kids well in the process. As a board member, what excites you most about where LRCA is headed for the next decade? LRCA is strategically positioned to prepare students for the challenge of the constantly changing world that our students will face upon graduation. There is no resting on our laurels at the Board level of our school. We are excited about the future! Why is LRCA worth the financial investment and sacrifice when there are good public school options in Little Rock? The benefit of the availability of good public schools is undeniable, and I hope that Little Rock will always have strong public schools. But public schools cannot combine a Biblical Worldview within their academic setting. As individuals, we do not lead compartmentalized lives. We do not have a physical part separate from an intellectual part, separate from a spiritual part. We are formed by the Lord Himself, and each component affects the others. The great advantage that LRCA has over the public schools in the area is that we have the opportunity to integrate Christ into every aspect of education. We can partner with families and churches to develop the whole child - mind, body, soul. Susan with her husband Ken and granddaughter Vera at Grandparents Day 16

LRCA BOARD OF TRUST Dear Warrior Family, Every year the Annual Review provides a time for reflection, measurement, and thanksgiving reflecting on progress made, measuring our current state of the school and being always mindful and thankful for God’s blessing, past and present. This year’s Annual Review provides more reasons to rejoice. Investments in facilities and teachers equals investment in our students. Your Board, one-third of whom are alumni parents and two-thirds of whom are parents of current students, is encouraged as we reflect back on progress made from year to year. However, we can only glance back briefly as we know the importance of preparing and planning for the future. What’s next? That is the question your Board addresses on an ongoing basis. We approach this question humbly and always in prayer for God’s wisdom. Little Rock Christian Academy has been blessed in so many ways - faculty, leadership, and facilities. All of these are reasons to be encouraged. The past certainly motivates and encourages us for the future. We hope you are encouraged as well. Partnering in His service, Tommy Vaughan Chairman, Board of Trust

Tommy is an attorney with Lax, Vaughan, Fortson, Rowe and Threet. He and his wife Martha are parents of four Warrior alumni. Tommy has served as a Warrior Club Board member and is a past Chairman of the Arkansas Baptist Foundation. He and his wife are members of Immanuel Baptist Church where Tommy teaches Sunday School.
