FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

HOS who

Walks Worthy

Gary B. Arnold

T

he past year will be remembered as the year of walking worthy. As we took our first steps into the year, little did we know how big and encompassing those two words would be. Walk worthy. Walk worthy as individuals. Walk worthy as an institution. Now, twelve months later, we look back and marvel at the distance the Lord has brought us, walking with us, side by side. Our walk was worthy, and remains so, for one reason – because He is worthy! Everything we have been able to do is because He allowed us to do it. • The honor of the U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon recognition we received last fall

Dr. Arnold pictured with his Walk Worthy shoes.

• The grouping of grades five and six to create a new middle school structure aligned with the alliance of grades seven and eight to create a new junior high structure • The mouth-dropping expansion of our athletic training facilities • The construction of Warrior Hall elevating our platform and enriching our ability to worship, gather, learn, create, and perform to the glory of God • The advancement of the Class of 2013 to over sixty universities, blessed with over $12,000,000 in scholarship awards • The daily encounter with the truth of Jesus Christ in every grade and every subject area. The call to walk worthy never ceases. As we pledge to PRESS ON into 2013-14, we will hold our three fingers high forming the sign of the “W” and tap our heart twice, reminding each other to … walk worthy!

Dear Warriors: Your Board of Trust remains steadfast in advancing and protecting the four institutional core values of Truth, Excellence, Love, and Partnership, all resting on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ. As you examine the Annual Review, I am confident you will agree that Little Rock Christian has experienced phenomenal success through the accomplishments of its students and faculty. Our school’s overall K-12 designation by the U.S. Department of Education as an “Exemplary High Performing” Blue Ribbon School (1 of 50 private schools in the country) is the abundant favor of God on LRCA. The Blue Ribbon was the precursor to many visible signs of growth around the campus. The completion of Warrior Hall, increased classroom space and overall upgrades to the grounds make one proud to be a Warrior. In addition to the many visible signs of growth, I can testify that the quality of our teachers is better than ever. Their commitment to the students shines in multiple stories of academic and spiritual growth. It is the Board’s hope that you will partner with us as stakeholders in our children’s school. In Christ, Stuart Miller Chairman, Board of Trust

Cara Wade

Walk Worthy

On the board of trust, Cara has used her professional expertise to guide a group that is working on the school’s strategic communications plan. She also serves on the committee on trust. These important functions both promote the distinctions of LRCA today while helping to prepare it for the future.

T

his year Cara will celebrate her 20th anniversary as Director of Communications for Baptist Health. Cara has served on the Little Rock Christian board since 2011. She is married to Guy and has three sons who have attended LRCA since Kindergarten. Her oldest graduated with the class of 2013. Cara’s passion for Little Rock Christian comes from her experience as a parent throughout the year. She says, “It is truly an amazing school. It’s about Christian love and educational excellence. I can’t imagine a better place.”

Outside of school, Cara and Guy teach a young married Sunday School class at Immanuel Baptist Church. They have had the privilege to be a part of that for almost 20 years. Because she cares about preserving history for future generations, Cara serves as the President of the board for the Old State House Museum, an Arkansas treasure that is the oldest standing state capitol building west of the Mississippi River. She has also served the board of the American Red Cross to promote blood donation and disaster relief and is called upon to help the national office on special projects. Cara takes Little Rock Christian’s 2012-13 theme of “Walk Worthy” to heart, in attitude and action. She says she is inspired by her sons to walk worthy because “if we aren’t living out what our students are being taught then we’re missing it.”

Mark Leverett

M

ark Leverett’s enthusiasm for Little Rock Christian is rooted in the school’s passion for Christ and children. Its blend of academic excellence with a Christ-centered worldview is unique. The learning environment is a vital consideration for Mark and his wife, Kim, because of the amount of time their children will spend at school. He says, “We have found that LRCA gives our children the best opportunity to excel in higher education and to engage the culture spiritually.” Mark has served on the Little Rock Christian board of trust since 2009, particularly devoting his time to the culture and strategic communications work groups. He is currently chairing a committee that is focusing on kingdom diversity and building bridges between gender differences, racial differences, ability differences, cultural differences and socio-economic differences in the school. A District Judge in Little Rock during the day, Mark also gives back to his community in a number of volunteer roles. He has been a foundation board member of Keith Jackson’s PARK Ministries for over five years, and he is the chair of Children of Arkansas Loved for a Lifetime (The CALL). Being adopted

himself by a Christian family, he is keenly aware of the need to equip Christian families for the essential work of fostering and adopting orphans in Pulaski County. St. Mark Baptist Church is the Leverett family’s worship home. Mark serves there as a deacon, men’s Sunday School instructor, and an instructor in the Roddy E. Collins School of Ministry. n September 7, 2012 U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the recipients of the U.S. Department of Education’s 2012 Blue Ribbon Schools award. Little Rock Christian Academy was on that list of 314 schools from across the nation (one of three from Arkansas) to receive the esteemed blue ribbon. The blue ribbon designation that LRCA received was “EXEMPLARY HIGH-PERFORMING.” The U.S. Department of Education bestowed this highest honor upon our school as a K-12 unit school. Therefore, under one umbrella of Little Rock Christian Academy, our elementary school, middle school, and high school are so recognized.

Secretary Duncan addressed participants at the awards luncheon, praising the school representatives for the “amazing difference” they are making in students’ lives. “You are truly going to lead us where we need to go,” he said. The diligent work, perseverance, commitment, and high standards of our professionals have earned our school this high honor. Test scores, school culture, best practices in the classroom, and breadth and depth of program combined for us to receive this respected award.

Vision, mission, strategic plan, professionalism, student engagement, lifelong learning and a devotion to truth in Jesus Christ all contributed to the award. But, ultimately, classroom dynamics and student achievement sealed the deal for us – teachers and students learning together.

The Council of American Private Education tells us that blue ribbon awards for K-12 unit schools are rare. What a testimony to the vision and mission of our school and the daily focus of our teachers and students. Simply put, we claim a double mandate: we must do Jesus well; we must do education well. Special thanks to our educational leaders, our faculty, and our students for their achievements that brought this to pass.

Beginning with the End in Mind

A

cross the campus, in lower school and upper school, Little Rock Christian’s faculty teaches with the end in mind, knowing that ultimately our students must graduate equipped for life. The class of 2013 is represented by young men and women who love and follow Christ and are equipped to thrive at college, pursue God’s calling, and engage a post-modern society. They love to learn, they think wisely and are grounded in Biblical truth. We have watched them serve others with love at school, in Arkansas and around the world. In a ceremony at Immanuel Baptist Church on May 24, 116 graduates received diplomas. Thirty of those students make up the Kindergarten Club, having attended Little Rock Christian Academy from the beginning of their school days. After outstanding speeches by Salutatorian Christian

Shewmake and Valedictorian Everett Mansur, Dr. Brian Simmons gave the commencement address. Dr. Simmons is the recent past president of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and currently a Fellow with the Chuck Colson Center. Parents and teachers shared mixed emotions as they watched these seniors leave campus via the traditional Warrior Walk and then process across the stage at graduation. We will continue to pray for the Warriors of the class of 2013. Their class verse is a reminder to us all: “The Lord will guide you always: He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” Isaiah 58:11

Memory Speaker’s

Unusual Finale JAY HEDGES

E

ach year the Senior class selects a classmate to speak at the graduation ceremony, to reflect on special memories and inside jokes that the class has shared while attending Little Rock Christian Academy. The class of 2013 selected Jay Hedges as their “Memory Speaker”. Jay’s speech was memorable in a novel sort of way --he wasn’t at graduation! Unfortunately, a game of Frisbee on the Gulf Shores beach during the Senior trip resulted in an injury which required Jay to stay in Alabama and forego the graduation ceremony. Through the use of technology, Jay was able to participate in the evening and record his speech for the class. Jay enjoyed many experiences while at LRCA. His participation in football, basketball, track, Student Council, and the spring musical Beauty and the Beast resulted in lasting relationships and a variety of memories.

training, education, childcare and summer youth programs, in order to equip them with the skills to be successful in the workforce, the community and their own families. For his service there, Jay was chosen as the United Way’s Volunteer of the Week in August 2012. Jay participated in a J-Term internship at Our House and then continued to serve as a volunteer, working around his school and football schedules. Jay assisted in a variety of ways with the schoolage children, and his vivid memories include their continual laughter, but also the fact that some children were experiencing hunger and real pain at home. Georgia Mjartan, Executive Director of Our House, commented, “Jay volunteered so frequently and with such professionalism that I forgot he was not one of our summer staff. I also cannot believe that he is still in high school! This young man serves with a maturity and depth of character that is unusual for someone of any age.”

The class of 2013 has been a class full of enthusiasm, creativity, and lots of joy, and I couldn’t have wished to be part of a better class.

His off-campus activities also represented the Warrior Way in our community. Jay was a committed volunteer at Our House in Little Rock. Our House provides the working homeless – individuals and families – with shelter, housing, job

K-Club

T

he Kindergarten Club, or K-Club, is comprised of seniors who have attended Little Rock Christian Academy since Kindergarten. These “apple dumplings” and “shining stars” came to the Bible Church campus in the Fall of 2000 ready to learn under the tutelage of Mrs. Linda Neaves, Mrs. Debbie Norman and Mrs. Gail Williams. While these 29 students have grown up before our eyes, excerpts from their kindergarten yearbook prove that some things really don’t change much. For example, “Playing outside” was Markie Schaedig’s favorite part of school; Arden Ricks said, “I like the teachers…. they’re nice”; Madalyn Wallace declared that “Kindergarten is a good place to learn and lots of fun”; and Brad Stone liked reading best!

During their Senior Year these students recounted and celebrated many memories when they joined Mrs. Teresa Walker, K-Club sponsor, in her high school classroom for lunch. The K-Club students have impacted Little Rock Christian over thirteen years with strong leadership. Three of their teachers, Mrs. Neaves, Mrs. Norman and Mrs. Walker, retired this year after a long tenure of educating hundreds of Little Rock students.

As God continued to provide additional families and faculty, Mrs. Neaves watched the school grow to over 1400 students. She witnessed the move to Highway 10 from Breckenridge Drive, the name change from Walnut Valley to Little Rock Christian Academy, and the school’s recognition as a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School. Mrs. Neaves has enjoyed seeing alumni return to Little Rock Christian to teach or to bring their own children 12

for an excellent Christ-centered education. Her favorite experience at LRCA is seeing children accept Christ. Mrs. Neaves said, “We have children every year trust Jesus to be their Savior. That alone is absolutely amazing. These children witness to their families, and God’s kingdom continues to grow. Hallelujah! I believe God will continue to bless LRCA as long as it lovingly serves Him first.” Little Rock Christian has truly been blessed by Mrs. Neaves’ 35 years of service and love. Congratulations to her on her retirement. She will be greatly missed!

lisha Neblett recently completed Boston University’s TESOL graduate program, earning her Master of Education degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. The program prepares individuals to work in college and adult language programs in the United States or to work for college, adult, primary, or secondary school programs abroad. Alisha currently teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults at the Boston Center for Adult Education and the Boston Language Institute. It’s the idea of connection that inspires Alisha to walk worthy. Her job allows her to build relationships with people from around the world as she helps them develop language skills. Alisha said that she is often an international’s first

he Dean of the Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Arkansas selected Claire Chesshir to give the commencement address last May. She was nominated for this distinguished honor by department chairs and faculty. Shortly after graduation, Claire married Matt Foster, LRCA Biblical Worldview teacher, and is enjoying living in Little Rock again. She is currently studying in a dual MD/MPH (Doctor of Medicine/Masters in Public Health) degree program through the UAMS College of Medicine and College of Public Health.

ANNUAL REVIEW

Claire received college credits in high school through LRCA’s outstanding Advanced Placement courses which gave her the flexibility to enroll in courses at the university which were nontraditional for a Biology and Psychology major. For example, she took a class entirely devoted to identifying trees, five semesters of Russian language, and she was able to devote significant time to research projects with faculty mentors. Little Rock Christian gave Claire the comprehensive foundational skills crucial for her advanced studies.

“Many of my teachers invested so much into my life over the four years of high school ... Those enduring relationships hold me accountable and encourage me to always strive to glorify God.”

Claire credits her parents and grandparents with developing the foundation of her faith and inspiring her to walk in accordance with God’s Word, but Colossians 2:6-7 reminds her that many “instructors” have blessed her both at church and at Little Rock Christian Academy. Claire said, “Many of my teachers invested so much into my life over the four years of high school and also continued to follow-up with 14

me throughout my undergraduate studies. Those enduring relationships hold me accountable and encourage me to always strive to glorify God.”

As Claire pursues her medical career, she finds Pediatrics particularly appealing. Her experience in the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Summer Science Program helped solidify that sentiment. While she knows that the path may take some turns, she hopes to practice in a Pediatric specialty.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow at Georgia Tech, Ben Rainwater is currently working towards a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering. He studies ceramic materials used in alternative energy conversion and storage devices, including rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells for efficient power conversion from fossil fuels. What does the phrase Walk Worthy mean to Ben?

Graduate research has given me the opportunity to work with many international students and visiting faculty. While collaborating on our work in the lab, our conversations often move from science to similarities and differences in our families, cultures, and religious beliefs -- topics that really resonate who we are and what we think about. The opportunity to have these conversations with colleagues has been a large component of establishing my faith while in grad school. I know that to share the love of Christ, I need to know and feel the love of Christ. I believe that these conversations are at least half of the reason I am where I am.

Ben credits several Little Rock Christian courses and teachers with his ability to press on with advanced degrees in engineering, particularly Mrs. Daniel’s Pre-Calculus, Mrs. Lubansky’s Calculus I and Mr. Boles’ Physics I classes. “Several math and physics fundamentals that I recall frequently in graduate school were first planted in those courses.” Also, “Worldview was an incredible introduction to other religions, the history of Christianity and the history of the Western world. I know about the Council of Nicea because of Worldview and I know that it was in 325AD because of Mr. Erlandson!” Ben recently interned at the Arkansas Science and Technology Authority. This agency stimulates economic development in Arkansas through grants to high-tech startup companies, by working with Arkansas manufacturers, and by administering funding for research and STEM education. Scientific research spurs economic development, but finding how all the pieces of the puzzle including K-12 STEM education, university research, innovation centers, start-up incubators, and industry fit together is not easy. He hopes to provide a scientist’s perspective to help put these pieces together, especially in Arkansas. ANNUAL REVIEW

Successful Capital Campaign

Enhances Arts, Academics and Athletics

O

n August 19, Little Rock Christian celebrated the magnanimous grace of God with the grand opening of Warrior Hall, a renovated middle school and expanded athletic training facilities. The generosity of our school’s families, faculty and friends affirmed our distinctive focus on excellence and balance between academics, arts and athletics. Concurrent with the completion of phase two of our master plan, the school was able to buy back bonds from those who had invested in our high school. The main driver for this campaign was the need for space dedicated to Little Rock Christian’s thriving fine arts program, as well as a gathering space for worship and celebration. Warrior Hall features six classrooms for graphic arts, choir, band, orchestra, drama and visual arts. The centerpiece of the facility is the Great Room which seats 700+ people for performing arts, school gatherings and chapel. 16

ANNUAL REVIEW

Beyond Warrior Hall, improvements were made to the elementary school, middle school, and junior high. The former elementary activities center was extensively remodeled to showcase one of the finest training/weight rooms in central Arkansas, additional locker rooms for female athletes, and a conference room for all Warrior athletic teams. Since 2007, over 7,000 individual gifts to the Lord’s work at LRCA have been received. Our campaign to complete phase two of the master plan concluded with over $7,200,000 in gifts. The result of your generosity is a flourishing campus, the enduring glow of our National Blue Ribbon from the U.S. Department of Education, and no debt on our high school, no debt on the west 20 acres, no debt on our athletic facilities and no debt on Warrior Hall. These monumental initiatives have been PAID FOR IN FULL BY OUR GOD -- Jehovah-jireh. Again, we are grateful for all of the families who contributed to this historic initiative which calls Little Rock Christian Academy to PRESS ON for the glory of God!

We saw the Warrior Softball team participate in its first state tournament in school history. Six Warrior athletes earned individual State Champion recognition: Hunter Jones, Mark Guffin, Ashley Cheatham, Erin Woodward, Hannah Fiser and Carley Brown. Three Warrior coaches were selected conference Coach of the Year (Karen Schaedig, Christie Nipper and Stefan Jones), and Athletic Director Johnny Watson was named 5A Central Athletic Director of the Year. The 2012-13 athletic year was capped when the Arkansas Democrat Gazette named Little Rock Christian the 5A All-Sports Champion. However, that’s not the whole story. Warrior Athletics is about people. Warrior athletes and coaches demonstrated their commitment to becoming great people, not just athletes. They exemplified the values of a C4 competitor (Christ-like, Character-based, Committed, Competitive) and walked worthy on and off the field.

ark Guffin’s athletic accomplishments during his time at Little Rock Christian are impressive. He is a repeat all-state and all-conference honoree, earning the 5A state title as well as the overall state title in discus and shot put. He was named All American, a Gatorade Player of the Year, and Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Mark also broke a 23-year-old state record in discus with a throw of 195 feet, 2 inches. While testifying, “God has really blessed me with the ability to throw and the ability to get out there and work hard every day in the sport that I love,” Mark also attributes his success to hard work and good coaching.

Communication class for helping him research and formulate questions during the recruiting process. He says that Little Rock Christian, combined with his family and home church, equipped him to know what he believes and have confidence in who he is. At college, he doesn’t want to change to fit others' expectations or to experience college in the same way as so many around him. He is inspired to Walk Worthy because he understands that if he doesn’t, the athletes and students around him will not believe what he says.

And yet, losing his father to Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) when Mark was 11 eleven years old may have shaped his life more than anything. “I was determined that he was going to look down on me and be proud of his son.”

Faith – He posts his favorite verses where he is reminded:

After earning ranking as one of the top high school discus throwers in the country, Mark is now at the University of Alabama on athletic scholarship. We asked him how Little Rock Christian prepared him for this step. There are many college students who talk one way, but walk a different way. What makes Mark Guffin distinctive? He reminds himself of several things every day:

“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.” 1 Corinthians 15:10 “The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but victory belongs to the Lord.” Proverbs 21:31 Personal Goals – He also posts his specific athletic goals in daily view because “a goal without a plan is a wish!”

Coach Nipper believes the family atmosphere of the cross country teams to be their greatest accomplishment, not the impressive titles. These runners are constantly pushing, encouraging, and looking out for one another. Who is Mrs. Nipper’s greatest inspiration to Walk Worthy? She says her twoyear-old son, Miles, has taught her a few things -- like being joyful and content in all circumstances, and working hard without complaining. When she sees Miles watching her, trying to imitate her actions, she feels the great responsibility of representing Christ to Miles.

Fine Arts Review The Little Rock Christian Academy Fine Arts Department is composed of choir, instrumental music, visual arts and drama. These four artistic groups had an amazing year filled with events and competitions. A highlight of the year was the Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol Radio Broadcast” production. The entire department of Little Rock Christian artists combined talents for a Christmas celebration at Robinson Center Music Hall. Our Fine Arts programs finished the year well with the musical production of “Beauty and the Beast” and Fine Arts Week. The musical featured LRCA’s seasoned performers and orchestra, as well as students who auditioned to try something new in a production that was a childhood favorite. Fine Arts Week featured middle school and high school band, orchestra, and choir concerts, along with an art gallery and auction.

Teacher who

Walks Worthy

Brittan Sanders

INSTRUCTOR OF DIGITAL ARTS AND FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT HEAD WHO INSPIRES YOU TO WALK WORTHY? I am currently reading a book by Elisabeth Elliot entitled Secure in the Everlasting Arms. Learning about modern day heroes of the faith inspires me to walk worthy. When I look at those who have gone before me, who have endured painful and joyous seasons of life, I find encouragement knowing that we walk in this adventure with the Lord together. I am reminded of Hebrews 12:1, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR STUDENTS WALKING WORTHY? I had the opportunity to spend time with a group of girls who graduated last spring. I was their chaperone on the senior trip, and we decided to keep our little family together over the summer. These young ladies truly love the Lord. It is incredible to see their passion for Jesus and their enthusiasm to take Him with them in their next phase of life. They are literally spreading out all over the country. Watching them grow into godly women after their high school career is such an encouragement and testimony to the goodness of God and the impact of LRCA. I have confidence that they will walk worthy in their next season of life, bearing witness to His character and bringing glory to His name.

HOW ARE THE CLASSES WE OFFER IN FINE ARTS CHANGING AND EXPANDING? With the blessing of Warrior Hall, we have the opportunity to really expand our programs. This year we are serving over 600 students in fine arts and we have hired several new fine arts teachers. New course selections are being offered in visual arts, choir and drama for high school and junior high students. The blessing of the new, incredible performance space allows our instrumental, choral, and dramatic programs to pursue an even higher degree of excellence. This year we have expanded our digital arts program with a new state-of-the-art Mac lab. There is a tangible excitement when you visit Warrior Hall, in both the students and the teachers, as we embark on our most creative year yet!

HOW DO YOU SEE LRCA IMPACTING THE LITTLE ROCK COMMUNITY AND THE KINGDOM? Every day I see evidence of LRCA’s impact on the community through the lives of our students and their families. The dearest time for me is our times of prayer in the classroom. Students openly share praises and concerns. They share their hearts for local organizations, people in need, their families, and fellow students. I see Christ’s Kingdom being spread through the genuine faith of our students. My husband is a therapist at Our House, a Little Rock homeless shelter. He is amazed at the number of Little Rock Christian families and students who are investing in Our House and making a difference in people’s lives. One high school student threw a birthday party for a fellow student who lived at the shelter. She was so moved to care for and love on this student for whom life has been difficult. Another student volunteered to counsel, encourage, and tutor children throughout the summer. We have many students who do things daily to be Christ’s hands and feet. I love hearing that Little Rock is impacted by the love of Christ through our LRCA families. 26

BOOSTER CLUBS

Little Rock Christian Academy’s

Tireless Volunteers

L

ittle Rock Christian Academy depends on the passion, commitment, and generosity of hundreds of people each year. Our most active volunteers assist in classrooms, student performances, athletic events, fundraisers and numerous other places throughout the year. From outfitting the classrooms in Warrior Hall, to providing computers for our students, to improving athletic facilities for all sports, our booster clubs contribute to the excellent education found at LRCA.

Whenever you support a fundraiser from one of these organizations, you not only receive a product or service, but you also give back to your school through that organization. We are thankful for the moms and dads who give tirelessly to provide great experiences in Warriorville for students and parents!
