Thinking about Higher Education
Everything HE W
e are excited to announce that the Progression department has now embarked upon a series of short interviews with representatives from a range of universities. Our Careers Assistant, Emma Greenhill, has been busy asking about all things HE! Questions are varied, including content about how universities are managing during the Pandemic, the support they offer to students and how lessons are delivered, right through to how to choose the best course, and how to write a good personal statement. There is even a discussion about their delivery of Degree Apprenticeships. If you think you might like to watch these, you can access content via the Teams ClickView App, or alternatively by going directly to ClickView online and looking at the content in the Long Road Library. The films will all be available in the folder found at Libraries / Long Road Sixth Form College / Careers / University Talks 2020.

The value of
VOLUNTEERING If you’re keen to find out more or join the Volunteer Club talk to Sam Plant: splant@longroad.ac.uk
Including volunteering on your CV or personal statement can be a valuable way to demonstrate to your employers or potential university that not only are you hardworking, but that you also have an abundance of useful experience and transferable skills. We spoke to our Long Road Volunteer Co-ordinator Sam Plant, about the other benefits that volunteering can bring, "Volunteering at Long Road makes you feel part of the community spirit by making new friends and giving you that sense of belonging in a friendly and supportive environment. You'll feel a great deal of pride that comes from making a difference to people’s lives within your community. It’s not only the people you’re volunteering with that benefit, it’s you as well through gaining personal satisfaction and achievement, new skills and experiences, demonstrating commitment, new ways of thinking and encountering new cultures and customs.
Volunteering brings hope and happiness to people and leads to spiritual and emotional growth which is extremely important to our own mental health as it helps us grow as a person developing value and compassion." In particular, lockdown and the need for social measures has made it very easy for certain individuals to become isolated and lonely. Sam has ensured that through the volunteer work of his students, these individuals have managed to stay connected during this difficult time ( with social distancing, of course!), "I had over 25 students volunteering during lockdown and these involved delivering meals, shopping, doing odd jobs or gardening within their communities. A number also helped make masks and equipment for the NHS. We also had a few students who were already volunteering at the St Johns
learn so much about vulnerable individuals and has led me to be where I am now. In just a few days I’ll be heading off to start my Midwifery degree- it only feels like yesterday when I turned up to that my first volunteering club meeting!" So what are some of the other benefits of volunteering? Below are some points of why it is important to volunteer and what may motivate you to get involved-
Ambulance volunteer at Addenbrookes in different capacities." Thanks to Sam, students have had the opportunity to volunteer for a number of well known charities and projects. Our current student, Harper, has been fortunate enough to work with AGE UK alongside an elderly gentleman, "Doug and I were introduced firstly on our shared interest on the Second World War. He proceeded to tell me stories of what he did during the war and had plenty to share. Most of our time is spent discussing the military either now or when he was a part of it. He even produced his photos from the time and medals which are framed proudly to show me. We have then discussed my future ambitions in life in the military. I have learnt many valuable life lessons and made a very good friend in doing this, which I would have missed out on if it wasn’t for this volunteering opportunity." We also spoke to an ex student, LoriAnn, about how volunteering has been hugely beneficial for her career path, "The support given me enabled me to
Helping the local community Meeting new people who may be different from you Try something new Making a difference Doing something you enjoy in your spare time See a different way of life and new places Support people with something you’re good at Value: act on something that is important to you. Enhancement: Enhance self-esteem and psychological development Social: Interact with others Understanding: Increase your knowledge and develop skills. Career: Gain experiences that will benefit your future career. Protective: Cope with anxiety and conflicts
