LRSFC ISSUE 37 MARCH 2022
Welcome to the April edition of the Long Road Careers and Progression Magazine. Firstly we would like to introduce you to the Careers Team. Tariq Sadiq joined the college this month as our new Careers and Employability Lead. He will be taking responsibility for developing the careers programme. Working with external partners and industry professionals we hope to offer a wide range of opportunities to students in the upcoming year both in college and out. One of our key aims is to build a programme embedding Green skills and sustainability in careers. The other member of the Careers Team is Emma Greenhill, who has worked at the college for over 6 years now and manages the day to day career-related activities, advertising vacancies and work experience opportunities.
In this edition, we have shared feedback from a very successful Mock Interview event the college, in collaboration with Form the Future, ran this week. You can also find information on student finance and how to seek out additional scholarships or bursaries. There are some ideas for on-campus and virtual university events you may want to look into and details of upcoming apprenticeship and industry insight events. The careers team is here to support your learning with careers-related activities, so please get in touch if you need any help. Please do give us your feedback about this magazine so we can continue to make it useful and relevant for as many students as possible.

Mock Interviews Workshop The college held a Mock Interview event with our partner, Form the Future. The aim was to give students the chance to have a formal interview with an industry professional, develop interviewing and networking skills, and to engage with employers.
We received students:

The event welcomed representatives from Mace Limited, Stantec and Kameo Recruitment who were all pleased with the student's level of professionalism, drive and ambition. Some interviews went so well that the employers found they had no areas of improvement to offer the student.
‘Very professional and helpful advice, with positive and constructive feedback.’
Along with feedback from the professionals, students were asked to give their own feedback to help us continue to make these events successful. A number of students said they would be able to use the information gained to help them in the future and they had learned something new.
‘I feel that I will feel more confident/comfortable in future with interviews as I thought I would be more intimidated by the experience.’
‘It was very insightful and gave me helpful information in terms of how to present yourself.’ ‘This has been an experience that given me confidence, something I believe I've lacked. Just an activity of formal conversation like an interview has been engaging and helped my public speaking. Thank you for the experience.’
‘The more you do interviews, the easier it is. It's helpful to see what questions you might be asked.’ ‘It helps get a feeling to what an interview is like and challenges you to go out of your comfort zone.’
‘I learnt what it is like to work in the architecture industry what it takes to be in this industry and what difficulties could be faced.’ Congratulations to all students that took part, you were all a great representatives of the college.

UCAS what happens next. - student finance Once you have completed your UCAS application and your offers start to appear, the next stage is to apply for Student Loans. This will cover the cost of your tuition fees and maintenance (living costs). The tuition fee will be paid directly to your chosen university, once you are enrolled. The maintenance loan will be paid directly into your bank account to help with day to day living costs. These are loans but you do not start paying them back until you are in full-time employment earning over a certain amount per year. Students will apply for their loan through Student Finance England using the main Government website: https://www.gov.uk/apply-online-forstudent-finance.
On top of the standard student loan, that anyone can apply for, students may be able to access additional scholarships, bursaries and grants. Scholarships are discretionary that some universities offer to high achieving students or students that excel in a specific area such as Sport or Music. Bursaries are available to help with living costs but will usually be based on the student's overall household income, and if the student is disabled. This is a useful one-off payment that may make all the difference to the university you choose. Find out what each of your chosen universities is offering to help you decide your first choice.
