Welcome to the new college year! If you are a returning student, welcome back; and if you are new to Long Road, a warm welcome from Careers and Progression. We hope your first few weeks have gone well as you settle into college life. It’s never too soon to start thinking about your next steps, and the Careers & Progression e-Mag is designed to get you started. Published at least once a month we bring you stories from former students on their successes, information on local employment opportunities and company profiles, internships and work experience, and reminders about university open days and virtual events you might want to attend. This all fits into the VESPA approach the college is using to try and help students 'be the best they can be'.

During your induction period, you will hear the term VESPA a lot, both in lessons and in tutorials and reviews with your Progress Coach. Check out P3 of this edition for an introduction to the VESPA principles, and how articles in this magazine will help you reflect on your strengths and areas for development. Please take the time to scroll through this e-magazine: we hope you find something useful, and we would love to know what you think. All feedback is welcome—get in touch at CareersDept@longroad.ac.uk with ideas of what you’d like to see more of. You can keep up to date by following the college social media— and have a look at our dedicated Twitter feed @LongRoadCareers.

The Careers Team

In the following pages of the eMag, we will attempt to categorise each article according to the VESPA model. As you will know, the VESPA model is comprised of 5 skills that together, will help to focus your attention on what you want to do in the future, and what you are doing to achieve your goal. Done properly, it is designed to help you establish and sustain a positive mindset, leading to an improved chance of success.

Student Experience Cambridge research trip for Art Ext Diploma

Art Extended Diploma students had the opportunity to tour the sights of Cambridge to gain inspiration for their Year 2 project. Students took the opportunity to draw and photograph to gain inspiration during the tour starting in Cambridge Market, Kings Parade and into Coe Fen, ending up at Little St Mary’s Church. Their teachers said, "The students were really engaged and inspired".

These activities not only count towards course projects and final grades but can be used as a talking point for UCAS applications or interviews. Think of it as something unique you achieved that is different from other applications!

Work experience Programme Automation. Artificial intelligence. Machine learning. ARM Holdings Plc designs microprocessors, physical intellectual property (IP) and related technology and software, and sells development tools to deliver intelligence in applications ranging from sensors to servers, including smartphones, tablets, enterprise infrastructure. At the beginning of August, Arm rolled out a Virtual Experience Week for pupils aged 16-18 years old. A number of Long Road students were lucky to be selected to attend this experience. The Virtual Experience Week had a particular focus on five learning themes: • Gain knowledge about Arm, its products, partners, people, and culture • Elevate their technical skills • Aid the development of their employability skills • Create opportunities to connect and network • Wellness & Fun

As part of the experience week, participants received a Certificate of Successful Completion to further elevate their employability skills and they have shown great interest in joining our Work Experience Alumni Club. 89% of participants said that they were able to increase their technical and employability skills throughout the week! Arm really appreciated the time pupils have taken to give them feedback. They said it will pave the way to develop and tailor their offering and can’t wait to let everyone know what this will look like for the future!

“Thank you for the opportunity to do this work experience, and for being a great host throughout the week! I learnt a lot and I am excited to put into action the new skills I have acquired!”

“It has been incredibly informative and taught me many things that I didn't previously know. Not to mention that insight to how a business works and the sense of community is very helpful.”

“It was a great opportunity to gain a larger understanding of the technological industry whilst also engaging actively and developing your own technical skills. Lastly, it was an opportunity to network with one of the most important semiconductor companies in the world.”

“Thank you so much for running the Arm work experience and giving us all the opportunity to learn more about Arm and the technology industry. On the topic of the Alumni Club, I would love to be part of it and stay in touch with Arm – please add me to it!”

FOCUS ON EMPLOYMENT AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Work Experience Work Experience is a useful and beneficial part of any programme, even if it is not a compulsory part of your course. It can help you stand out when applying for university or jobs. Work Experience can be in person or virtual and both options will give you a better insight into a career idea. It is a great way to find out if it is what you were expecting or not. If you do not know what career you want, or you cannot get your perfect placement, remember any work experience is better than none. Whatever job you try, you’ll learn more about yourself and your working life. You'll also gain valuable transferable skills in the process. It might even lead to other, more suitable experience with the same organisation, or be good preparation for another opportunity that’s closer to what you really want to do.

Use work experience to your advantage: find out more about yourself find out what inspires you come up with career ideas and try them out discover your strengths, values, motivations and interests Transferable or soft skills, as they are sometimes called, are skills that will be useful in any career you choose and you may find your current course also helps with these. Think about what makes you trustworthy and reliable. Are you a good communicator, can you work to solve problems and adapt when things don't go to plan? All these skills and attributes will be useful throughout your life, during your time at Sixth Form, at university and beyond.
