Welcome... to this week’s Careers e-mag. As you will probably know, there is a lot of discussion in the media at present about how to get to the end of Lockdown, and the steps to take to try and return to a new normal. Reading all of the suggestions, whether it is using technology via Apps, vibrating armbands, heat detectors, or simple gaffer tape on the floor to mark out distancing zones, it seems that the one thing that is clear at present, is that nothing has been decided for sure.
Having many ideas and solutions can sometimes make decision making that bit harder, so I am pleased to see that most ideas involve some sort of plan, taking society through a series of steps with a solid goal in mind. We will have to see which one is adopted, however on reflection, I realise that this is not too different from thinking about Career Planning for the future. I would always advocate that simply grabbing at an idea runs many risks, not least in terms of the potential for wasted effort and time as well as money, all in the hope that things turn out right. As an alternative, I would suggest to you that the more you can put together a solid plan, the greater your chances of success in the future, and yes, this is perhaps even more important in these changing times. Ask yourself, if you were giving advice, would you really suggest that someone simply invests a minimum of
£9000 per year in a
venture for the next 3 years, without having thoroughly looked at the content of a university course? Would you really suggest that someone jumps at a job offer in a role that they haven’t fully investigated, don’t know what is involved or whether it will offer any form of satisfaction as they spend the most part of each day working at it, and all for some money in their pocket at the end of the month? Do you really think it is a good idea to sit back and wait to see what happens with grade allocation before starting to think about applying for something, when many of the opportunities are already being snapped up? Hard questions to face up to, but perhaps food for thought? Well, the good news is that it is not too late. The one thing that the lockdown period does offer is plenty of time to really start thinking about putting a plan together.
Consider the 4 simple steps below:
L

want, or will an Apprenticeship better serve the way you want to move forward? Could you afford a Gap Year to think this over in greater depth and gain more insights/skills to achieve your goal?
G
o for it! Have you taken the steps to achieve your goal? Have you got applications in on time? Are you actively monitoring the opportunities out there so that you can apply, and have you prepared in advance so that you can react effectively?

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! This week we spoke to Sophie, who decided to go on a gap year before heading off to university.
Sophie, who will be starting her Paramedic Science degree at Anglia Ruskin in September, had always wanted to travel- "I have always wanted to see other parts of the world and how different cultures live, so I saved up for a year with my best friend and booked a one way ticket to India, as well as a spontaneous trip to Malaysia and Singapore once we were out there. We didn't go with any travel company and booked the hostels and hotels when we got there using the on hostel world app - which I would recommend. Whilst we were out there, we also made care packages with essentials like soap and food and handed them in Mumbai."
Sophie felt that the year off gave her time to reflect on what she wanted to do for the future -
"I feel the gap year gave
me the time to enjoy myself and not have to think about work so now I feel ready to start uni, and I think it will make me work harder. It definitely reinforced the fact I wanted to do paramedic science at uni and going to these poorer countries made me think that going to uni can means that I can help others. I plan to join the army as a paramedic so then I will be able to travel and do the job I'll love. I have always been interested in the medical side of things as my Granddad was a surgeon and I loved to talk to him about his job."
We asked Sophie if she had any advice for students who are considering going on a gap year- "If you're unsure, take a gap year if you can as it's hard to have the chance to do it again! It gives you time to relax after your a-levels as well as 16 years of study too. If you do also choose a course for university, make
sure
it's
one
commitment too."
