How good it was to see the first of our students returning to college in the last week. Most seemed happy, some a little anxious, and occasionally I observed indifference, however, overall it was a great return of our Year 2 flock and we look forward to first year’s coming back in the week commencing 15th March. Big events like this throw up all kinds of emotions and I found myself reflecting upon resilience and adaptability. It is at times like this when you really see these come out in people and I thought to myself, “Well, there are at least two employability skills that students will be able to talk about in any future interview or Personal Statement!” I think many people found that the unpredictability of what lies ahead as the most challenging element of the last lockdown, so it is good to put it behind us. Also, recognising that we have got this far can be a real boost to confidence as we look forward and contemplate how to turn a challenging experience into a positive outcome.

As well as our return, there are more positive elements to come. On Thursday evening of this week, Parents had the opportunity to attend an online presentation about how students will be assessed this academic year, providing more clarity where possible, and a sense of progression. Picking up on the theme of progression, there are also Careers Events coming in the next fortnight, and a drive to build upon the learning of our students. This edition of our Careers eMag gives details of those events and as usual, we have tried to put something in print for all our readers. It is great to be back, and we hope you all enjoy this read. The Careers Team.

CAREERS FILM SERIES

coming soon to clickview In March, the college usually holds one of its largest events for the students: The Progression and Careers Event. We take over the LRC and Student Centre and invite a range of organisations to come into talk about routes into their industry. A number of students bring along CV's to hand out and have actually secured work experience or even paid employment as a direct result of a contact they made at the event Unfortunately, the college is not able to host a live event this year, for obvious reasons (COVID restrictions). Instead, the Progression Team have been working hard to record a number of interviews with industry experts, talking about how COVID has affected their Business and what recruitment opportunities are looking like over the coming year. We have chosen the title 'You Choose' as a parallel with 'You Tube' on the internet.

We want you to think of the films as an easily accessible resource where you can click on the films that you decide you want to watch, just as you would with YouTube! The organisations taking part include charities, large, medium and small companies, gap year, and we even have some Long Road Alumni speaking in some of them. Here are just some of them to tempt you: Cambridge University Hospital Costello Medical ARM Turners Soham LTD CEASE UK APM PPD Dusty Music Productions Plus much more. Films should be available to watch by 17th March. (ClickView/LongRoad/libraries/Careers/ You Choose Film Series 2021)

EXTRA CHOICES Extra is another chance for you to gain a place at university or college, between 25 February and 4 July. If you used all five of your choices on your original application and you’re not holding an offer or accepted any, you’ll be able to add another choice using Extra. Remember, if you originally only applied to one choice and want to add more, you’ll be asked to pay the extra £6 application fee in Track. If you don’t hold any offers after 5 July, you will be able to add an additional choice using Clearing.

Adding another choice using Extra is easy – here's how to do it in three simple steps: 1. Search for courses with vacancies using our search tool. 2. Get in touch with the university or college to check they are able to consider you. 3. Add the details in Track.

At the University of Lincoln, we know it’s been a difficult year for students of all ages. From trying to learn from home and missing friends to the uncertainty around exams and assessments and how this might affect your future plans. While it’s natural to feel a little nervous about things, don’t let that put a stop on your future. As a University, we are doing all we can to support students and ensure that no one is disadvantaged as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

To help provide some reassurance, the University of Lincoln has introduced a flexible admissions process across the majority of courses for students who choose us as their first choice or insurance choice for this coming autumn.

If you’re lucky enough to already be holding an offer from us – congratulations! While this is an exciting time, we appreciate that the recent changes in Government policy around exams and assessments might be unsettling. You may be wondering how this decision, along with the disruption to your teaching throughout the pandemic, will affect your results.

As long as your confirmed or predicted grades are no more than 16 UCAS tariff points below the conditions of your offer, we will guarantee your place.* Of course, the same level of flexibility will be applied to those students undertaking other qualifications, such as the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

In practice, this means that when we receive confirmation of your results, we will consider both your actual and predicted grades alongside your personal statement and reference.

If you find that you don’t meet the conditions of your offer we can still consider you for one of our Certificate of Higher Education, Arts Foundation Year, or Science Foundation Year programmes, so there are always more options to explore. More information on our flexible admissions approach is available on our website at www.lincoln.ac.uk. If, for whatever reason, you missed the UCAS equal consideration deadline on 29 January 2021, please don't worry – you can still apply for many of our courses to join us this autumn. Our Admissions Team will look at all the information in your application when we make you an offer, and consider your best work to ensure we are being fair and taking the impact the pandemic has had on your learning and outcomes into account.

You can apply through UCAS in the normal way up until 30 June 2021, after which any new applications will automatically be entered into Clearing. And don’t forget, if you applied to universities by the January deadline but are not currently holding any offers, you can still make an additional choice through UCAS Extra. Whatever your circumstances, hopes and ambitions, we are here to help you succeed and can’t wait to welcome you to our campus. Join The Times and Sunday Times Modern University of the Year this autumn, and let your future begin. *Please note that any subject specific requirements will still need to be met
