Prepping For an Exciting LEDCON WRITTEN BY ETHAN CLARK With LEDCON fast-approaching, the excitement is bubbling up, and Key Clubs from everywhere are preparing! Each Key Club is beginning to promote and raise funds for this novel Convention. The Lake Ridge High School Key Club has also begun the preparations and promotion necessary to build the elated nature of LEDCON. We have been promoting LEDCON through the use of motivation to attend the event, picture galleries from the past years of attendance, and various fundraisers to support the event. Lake Ridge High School Key encourages all members, while having to meet the requirement for hours, to go above-and-beyond these standards to further the ideals of Key Club and help the community in an even more impactful way. This dedication of going beyond what is required, is a defining aspect of Key Club, and due to its exemplification in our club, we reward our boy and girl members who have the highest hour count with the ability to attend LEDCON with the officers. This promotion benefits the community, and also gives a little extra motivation to our members, thereby promoting LEDCON within our club.

At our Key Club meetings, we always enjoy showing pictures and videos from past years at LEDCON, when permissible, and encouraging members to look forward to it. We usually have a section in many of our presentations that we use during meetings, that reminds members about LEDCON, describes, and portrays the event through pictures and videos. I’ve personally had, at least half the club, if not more, come up to me wanting to know more about this new, fun opportunity called LEDCON. The concept of a multitude of Key Clubs coming together to serve, bond, and unite as a family appears as the opportunity of a lifetime -- this would be the right assumption! LEDCON offers something for everyone: adventure, service, party, competition, and family-building! Our Key Club at Lake Ridge High School also uses a final application to simultaneously promote LEDCON and show our values. We accomplish this through the use of fundraisers, which finance the club and its adventures. We recently began to sell gummy bears to accomplish just this, and they’ve been a huge success. Each member has registered to sell them, and our school is now riddled with hyper kids due to the Gummy Bears. We’ve also participated and organized multiple bake sales, in order to raise club funds and promote LEDCON. Through these acts of fundraising, promotion, and service, Lake Ridge High School’s Key Club has promoted and advertised the greatness that is LEDCON. All of our members here at Lake Ridge High School in Mansfield are looking forward to it! We’ll see you there!
Balancing School and Extracurricular Activities WRITTEN BY TAWAKALT OKUNOLA It is not uncommon to find students tired and stressed out from school, extracurricular activities and even work. Most have similar routines: Wake, School, Activities/ Work, Study Sleep, Repeat. This is a tough schedule that can be hard to follow while making sure to take care of yourself. Especially for Key Club members (because we volunteer), it can be very demanding. In order to juggle these responsibilities effectively, I suggest that you set a personal schedule that allots time to different activities based on their level of importance and also set some time to relax. Humans thrive on consistency by organizing in particular, unique ways to themselves. For example, my daily schedule may vary from that of a freshman at my school because we take different classes and therefore our schedules will also differ as we value different subjects over others. Thus, the easiest way to balance school and life is to set a personal schedule and stick with it. Buy a planner, or use the notes/calendar app on your phone to keep organized. This helps to set priorities and develop beneficial time management skills. Categorize your schedule by daily and weekly activities and keep short-term and long term goals. You can also use post it notes, markers, highlighters and more to stay organized. Doing this may also provide you with some stress relief. Remember, school work should always come first. Make sure to keep your GPA up as that will most likely predict your college choices and career path.
While you may have a full schedule, that does not mean that you should ignore family, friends or sacrifice good sleep and meals. You have to make sure to allot time to take care of yourself. Once in a while, it may be fine to sleep for four hours if you have an important project due soon but do not let staying up late become a habit. Take time for yourself to avoid getting burned out. Be sure to reward yourself for your hardwork and you could even take up wellbeing activities such as Yoga and exercise. Another good tip I have for staying on schedule is to never waste time. If you ever have a free period or study hall, use it to catch up on assignments or do something productive like researching colleges. Stay Productive!
