EXPERIENCING WHAT KEY CLUB IS ABOUT FEATURED ARTICLE BY TAWAKALT OKUNOLA On Friday, November 19th, we co-hosted one of our first club events with Uplift Summit. Mission Arlington welcomed us to come and help out around their facility with donations. Around 4:30 p.m, I arrived to discover I was the first member of the Lake Ridge Key Club to check in. Two more girls arrived shortly thereafter. One from Uplift Summit, D'Ann Jimenez(9th Grade), and the other from our Key Club, Jailinn George(12th Grade). One of Mission Arlington’s staff members walked us over to the warehouse at around 4:46 and we were greeted by a woman who instructed us on what we would do first. We were tasked with the responsibility of clearing out a section of donations, making room for others to come. We started by going through bins of shoes, deciding whether or not they looked able to withstand potential, everyday use for a second time. After we sorted through the set of shoes, we were allowed to put them in the store for people to look at. We made sure all of the

shoes were put in their respective areas and placed them next to other shoes that made them appealing n order to clear out the section of donations we were assigned to, we had to also bag

up purses and clothes. Many of the purses were either in great condition, still had tags on them, or had been used thoroughly. While going through the bags, we found about seven perfume samples and a bunch of other random items like cough drops and jewelry. One pair of heels reminded me of party shoes from the mid-1900s and made me imagine the great joy they must’ve brought someone a time ago. There were also many old clocks of all different sizes that we set aside in the glass/clock pile. The remaining items that were too worn or couldn't be used anymore were placed in a separate trash bag away from the usable items. We moved the bags and placed them between two different entryways to be picked up by their movers. One of the volunteers told us that the donations that aren't kept go to other organizations, so the cycle of reuse is continued and nothing is going to waste. While we waited for our next assignment, approximately 10 minutes, we were able to see all of the donations that came into the warehouse. After the wait, we were given the task of clearing out a portion of the room that had mainly clothing donations. We spent the majority of our time going through bins and bags deciding whether the clothing was in good condition. At the time, children's clothing was in high demand and most of the men's and women's clothing was being moved to other facilities to make rooms for donations that could potentially fill that void. We worked into the night hauling bags and baskets into the keep or move piles. We helped one of the volunteers go through racks of jackets, sweaters, and baskets of baby/toddler clothes. I took it upon myself to take spare hangers and separate them into a bin, and Jailinn and D’ann held bags open, for the clothes, to help make the process faster. It began to quiet down around 6:50 p.m. which was about the time we were supposed to leave. Mission Arlington verified that the work was done, then released us to the main building to get checked out. We said goodbye to the Mission Arlington staff & volunteers and went home around 7:15.
Mission Arlington is one of the many donation facilities that are helping people afford the basic necessities needed to live. Mission Arlington volunteers make sure that the items they are putting out are nice and would make someone feel good while going through tough times. The donations and volunteers are greatly appreciated by the staff and the work is rewarding.
The staff works endlessly every day to go through donations and keep the flow of them moving throughout Mission Arlington. After one visit, I would definitely be willing to volunteer again, and if you're able to, I would recommend it. If not, I recommend donating any items that you are looking to give away or sell. They could really use the help/donations and is a cause worth investing in.

Volunteering Experience FEATURED ARTICLE BY MAGGIE LE

On the exterior, key club may seem like a normal club. What isn’t shown, however, is the dedication and time that key club members give to be in the club. There is a reason that key club is so large. The kind hearts of these key club members are radiant and shine through when they are volunteering. As a key club member, I am able to connect with people that I would have never received the chance to connect to. I am able to make friends, memories, and leave with the appreciable feeling of knowing that I made a difference in the world. Recently, I’ve participated in two memorable volunteer opportunities. One being at Elizabeth Smith Elementary School and the other being at Lake Ridge High School. At Elizabeth Smith, I danced with little children, from Pre-K all the way through 4th grade. These children’s sparkling smiles got rid of any fatigue I felt while dancing and kept me feeling energized. Because of COVID, they had to have their Boosterthon program indoors and I am sure that they felt sad about this. However, none of this sadness or disappointment was shown when they walked into the gym that my friend, and some newly made friends, had worked hard to set up. After, classes started to roll in. It was overwhelming but so worth it. The children happily (and sweatily) held onto my hands as we danced. We danced from roughly 9:30 all the way to 3:30 with lunch as our break. Despite this, we were not tired. I felt happy that something that I was not good at (at all), dancing, was a great source of joy to those children. I feel like this is what key club is about, the contribution of people in a community helping others. This moment was extremely valuable to me and the time I spent partaking in it was definitely worth it. Secondly, I participated in Lake Ridge High School’s Vetern’s Day Breakfast. I’ve done similar activities like this in the past, but the cold that day separated it from the others. My friends and I stood there shaking, handing out coffees and donuts to the veterans who so graciously aided our nation. Standing there, I thought to myself that what I was doing was truly important and that a minor cold breeze would not even compare to the sacrifices that the veterans have done for me. This event gifted me with emotions of gratitude and appreciation for the work that others have achieved for me. Without key club, none of these memories would have been made and for that, I am truly grateful.
