President's Letter Hey Lake Ridge Key Clubbers! Now that January is over, it’s time for the loving month of February! Even if you don’t have a Valentine this year, make sure to spread the love to your friends, family, teachers, and fellow key clubbers. Or spend all of your affection on volunteering for the many service events for this month! Thank you to all the members that quickly sent in your hours for the check by the deadline! Remember, per Key Club International, every key club member needs to have 50 hours of devoted service each year. Next, the set date for officer elections is February 13th! Anybody can run for any position so just make sure to sign up. Just a friendly reminder that the Texas-Oklahoma Key Club District Convention is in April!!! This is a convention solely for Key Clubbers in ALL of Texas and Oklahoma that has informational forums about the ins-and-outs of Key Club, awards and contest for clubs, and a whole lot of fun with fellow key clubbers you’ve never met! All elected, including newly elected, officers from our club go to DCON (another reason to run for a position!) and this year we are taking the club member that has the MOST hours by the end of February to DCON. I encourage everybody to get the most because DCON is such an amazing experience. (PSA: If you’re trying to go for this, make sure to save up some money because, although our club fund will pay for most of it, DCON is still expensive!)

I have one more final announcement to make! Our club received a $315 YOF grant from Key Club International to complete a service project that our wonderful treasurer, Tavvie Nguyen, came up with. The project, in collaboration with Project Color (a non-profit organization), is called Gift and Dash and consists of making and giving gift baskets filled with creative items, such as crayons, paint, and coloring books, to give to underprivileged kids who don’t have the means to fulfill their creative needs! We are so excited to be participating in Project Color’s mission through this project. Lots of exciting events are coming up so make sure to keep coming to the club meetings to get the most information needed. Also, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to text the remind or to stop me or any of the other officers in the hallways. We are always happy to help. And always remember to serve your home, school, and community!
Forever In Service, Diana Fernandez

THE ULTIMATE KEY TO A BETTER YEAR BY: KAYLA MOORE, SENIOR REP.
The start of a new year has always been about setting personal goals, and working to become a better version of yourself than you were before - and Key Club is no exception to that. Every year at Lake Ridge, the ephemeral officers and the collective group as a whole work to strengthen our club, and generate a greater impact on our community than the year prior. This year, in particular, I want our New Year’s Resolution in Key Club to be to focus on promoting more involvement within our school and community. As Kofi Annan once said, “if our hopes of building a better and safer world are to become more than wishful thinking, we need the engagement of volunteers more than ever.” Which basically means that there can never be too many volunteers. It is why encouraging involvement in not just our club, but the community as a whole is so important. We can do this by spreading the word of new opportunities through the social web, fliers, and just exchanging words with friends and family members that are possibly interested. I realized, in the last couple years, how important it is to not remain stagnant from helping others. A small change can become a big one when there are more people to take on the heavy load.
8
Furthermore, our New Year’s Resolution stretches into not just more involvement within volunteering, but also within social events. Another pertinent part of Key Club is its social interaction. We love seeing fellow members getting to know each other, and producing friendships that go far beyond just the elective life. This year, I want the Lake Ridge Key Club to work to organize more events where members can feel comfortable enough to meet one another and have fun while doing something for the good of society. We have a basketmaking social coming up soon, where we will be making gift baskets to shift art supplies to kids in need. Why, might you ask? Because it is a Lake Ridge Key Club goal to have fun while simultaneously making a difference. To sum it all up, the Lake Ridge Key Club will always have resolutions as a new year approaches, because there is still always something we (individually or collectively) can better that will bring this association to its success. One of our core values in this organization is character building, and it will always - no matter what - be one of our core values. Happy New Years, everyone!

a word from the
EDITOR
Hey Key Club! I hope everyone is having a great second semester so far! Although the first semester might have been rocky for some of us, it's calming to know that we get a semi-clean slate every semester. With that being said, you get the chance to elect more officers! Freshman who did not get the chance to vote for our current board of officers, excluding our Freshman Representative Jordon of course, will now get the chance to vote for each position. Not only that, but you have the chance to run, too! Our deadline to sign up for elections has passed, as we informed you in a remind message, but don't let that discourage you from running next year! You have the power to choose who you want the officers to be. All in all, the effort you put in will reward you in the long run. It is amazing to see you guys show up every week to volunteer and it absolutely warms my heart to the core. For some of us, it will be the end of an era, but for others, the journey's just beginning.
With Love, Gilliana Tawaran
