President's Letter Hey Lake Ridge Key Clubbers! Hope you all have had a great summer so far filled with friends, good food, and most importantly VOLUNTEERING! So far we have done much service with Allies in Youth Development and Feed the Kids weekly, both of which I strongly recommend going to for volunteering. The officers and I have met this month to discuss club activities, which includes ideas for service projects and socials for the school year. One of my goals for this year is to personally get to know each and every one of YOU, our club members. So if you have any ideas for volunteering or hanging out together, let me know! The month of June has proven to be productive for our club so let’s keep it that way. I’m encouraging all members to keeping continuing to volunteering for the good of our community and the good of Key Club. Yours in Service, Diana Fernandez

FEEDING THE KIDS AND MY HEART BY: DIANA FERNANDEZ, DIVISION 39S
There are many opportunities to volunteer during the summer, especially since everyone is out of school and key clubbers can devote their time to volunteering. One of my favorite summer activities to do in Mansfield is to volunteer at Feed the Kids. Feed the Kids is a program that helps to provide the less fortunate students in the Mansfield Independent School District with food for the summer while out of school. During the school year, MISD has a free and reduced lunch program for students who cannot afford their food, however, in the summer they don’t have access to it. As a result, an organization called Common Ground and the Mansfield Club of Kiwanis partners together to collect donated food, such as cereal, tuna, fruit cups, and pasta, to package it and distribute to various food banks who then give it out to MISD kids. Let me put this act of service into perspective. The kids who receive the much needed food get it weekly and as such the volunteers must prepare and package the food weekly. Every Wednesday, we drive out to the Common Ground warehouse and help out! In the mornings, we unload the donated food from the trucks and sort and unpackage it in an assembly

line fashion. We later come back in the evening where get in the line, grab two bags, and place all the food prepared earlier into the bags as we move through the assembly line! Some Kiwanians and other adults have them placed into their car and one by one drive to drop the food at the distribution sites. Personally, I absolutely love going to Feed the Kids because I love seeing so many people come together to complete our goals. It’s not just Kiwanians or Key Clubbers volunteering there but the whole Mansfield community! Volunteers there range from boy scouts to church groups and 4 year olds to 80 year olds. As we go through the assembly line of food and place it in the bags, many of us will strike up a conversation with each other. Actually that’s how I got to better know the other Key Club officers in my division! Volunteering at Feed the Kids with the Key Clubs of Mansfield, Mansfield Summit, and Mansfield Legacy has brought me new friendships. Seeing the faces of others in my community who wants to help feed the kids of our schools as much as I do brings me great joy and only fuels the fire in my heart for volunteering even more.

S'MORES SOCIAL BY: GILLIANA TAWARAN, DIVISION 39S
The ooey gooey consistency of marshmallows and chocolate mashed between two graham crackers makes up the beauty of a s'more. In fact, the very essence of this scrumptious treat can also be used to explain parts of a Key Club board; working fine as individual elements, but together, they make up something super sweet! This month, officers from each Key Club within the Mansfield Independent School District met together for a s'mores social to enjoy an evening of fellowship and fun. Officers who had served this past year and new officers alike were able to get to know each other on a more personal level through games and food. They exchanged stories about volunteering experiences around the campfire and even exchanged service and fundraising ideas. Personally, this was my first Officers' social and I was very pleased with how it turned out! Getting to know the officers from different schools and their passions for other extracurriculars or school activities gave me a renewed sense of motivation for our own club. I was able to ask a few of the other editors what programs they use and we even exchanged our favorite fonts!

As I said earlier, the very essence of a s'more can describe a Key Club board. Every now and then, however, s'mores need a little toasting (and fun!) from time to time.

MAKING EVERY MOMENT MATTER BY: PRESTON TRUONG, DIVISION 39S
Lake Ridge Key Club isn’t just a club full of solo volunteers; we are a tight knit family of outstanding individuals dedicated to serving and giving back to their community. To acknowledge and reward the members for their hard work and efforts, our president takes the time to set up Key Club Socials for the members. These socials allow our members to not only have fun but to also provide opportunities for social interaction with each other, thus strengthening the bond and trust within our community. To raise awareness for these fun events, we use a communication app called Remind101 to spread the word around. This allows us to send multiple text messages to followers of said Remind as quickly and efficiently as possible. We usually notify members 3 weeks beforehand and do weekly reminders on the social until the day of the event. This way, our members are constantly reminded about the social and they do not need to worry about having accidentally planning overlapping plans the day of the event. Although it seems unnecessary and even a bit too much, we believe that this is the best way to notify our members

about upcoming socials and events. Our socials are more than just hang-outs where members just sit around unproductively and talk about meaningless topics. We try to incorporate acts of service and volunteer opportunities in our socials to make every social somehow significant. For example, I personally attended one of our socials back in April 2018. The social was held at Katherine Rose Park and we had about 16 attendees, both current members and guests, come to participate. Although the main incentive attracting many of the attendees was the ice cream that we served, we made the event productive by allowing the members and the guests they had brought to show off their artistic creativity and paint on rain buckets that we prepared beforehand. We would later use these rain buckets and auction it off to charity. Through this single social, we were able to not only encourage our members to participate in more future socials and volunteer events, but we also were able to advertise Key Club and it’s parent organization Kiwanis to non-Key Club members. Lake Ridge Key Club values their members very highly, so we try our best to make their volunteering experience as fun as possible. Our socials are here to both congratulate our current members as well as invite other individuals newer to Key Club. We are not just a club, we are a family.
