Vice President's Letter Hey Lake Ridge Key Clubbers! I’m Christeen Nguyen, your Vice President. We have a lot of upcoming events in November that you can get involved in! First and foremost, our Adrenaline Card Fundraiser just started and we are only going to do this for 2 weeks - until our next club meeting - so get to selling! Each card is going to be sold for $20, but the discounts on the cards are worth way more than that! These cards raise a lot of money for our club, so that we can pay for any socials or fun activities that your officers plan. Each pack has 15 cards in it, but after you sell 10, you can get a customized Lake Ridge hoodie! When November 14th comes around (the due date for money) and you haven’t sold all of your cards, you just need to get them back to Mrs. San Miguel’s room in A-337. Since Veterans’ Day is this month, we have a few projects that you can also partake in! Some of your fellow members participated in making an appreciation poster for our veterans after our most recent meeting on October 31st, although we haven’t finished making it yet. We are also going to be working on it this upcoming Monday after school in Mrs. Cooper’s room. The poster is going to say, “Thank you for your appreciation” with decorations on the poster. We will make laminated stars, so that the veterans’ names and their branch of service can be displayed. It is going to be displayed at the front of the school next to reception between the two glass doors. Mr. Romaguera will be collecting names from students
3
and he will send me the list of veterans as it’s updated. The officers will write their names on the stars that we make on Monday and these stars will then be displayed on the windows next to the glass doors. Lastly, we are going to be hosting a Veterans’ Day breakfast on Monday, the 12th for the teachers at Lake Ridge who are veterans, as well as for any parents of Lake Ridge students. There will be pancakes, coffee, fruit, donuts, and more! If any of you are willing to donate any of these items, they will be greatly appreciated! It will start at 6:45AM in the library, but if you are able to come at 6:30 to help the officers set up the breakfast, that would be awesome! As you can see, we have a lot of projects and volunteer events going on in November, so please sign up for anything that you are available for!
Your Vice President, Christeen Nguyen

THE MAGIC OF SCHOOL INVOLVEMENT BY: JORDAN DRUMGOOLE, DIVISION 39S
High school has totally changed my life, in fact, it’s almost taking up my life, but I’m actually fine with that. One thing that I discovered in my initial months of high school is that being involved in your school will just enhance your high school experience. If that means getting involved in an extracurricular, or joining a service club, like Key Club or Student council, you will enjoy high school at least 10 times more that you already are. Not only will serving your school enhance your experience, it will make you feel like a part of something, as you would feel whenever you join band (Like I did), choir, or theatre. I know first hand how it feels to serve your school, and it feels great! That’s why the most fun part of Key Club is helping your school, because what’s the point of going to school and not improving it? As a freshman just starting things out, Key club is an organization I’m really proud and honored to be a part of. It’s one of the clubs I’m in that made me realize that school is much more enjoyable whenever you get involved in your school, and as I’m now the Freshman Class representative, I’m even more eager for what the year holds, as now I have a platform to spread my passion and devotion to our fellow students in the Freshman class and in our school.
6
In addition to being a member of Key Club, I’m also the Freshman class president in student council, and seeing those who take pride in their school really adds to the magic of school involvement. I feel that school pride is being underrated in our school. While there are more and more people gradually taking pride in their school and working to improve it, I still encounter many people who possess a ‘What’s the Point Mindset’ that is hindering them from reaching their potential and helping to reach the school’s potential. So why not experience the Magic of School Involvement? This year is shaping up to be a fantastic year, so be a part of your school, be a part of our rising school pride, our fantastic service organizations, and a part of our school improvement. Trust me, you won’t regret it, and when it’s time to graduate, you’ll look back on your high school days with joy.

KIWANIS MEETING RECAP BY: PRESTON TRUONG, DIVISION 39S
The 299th (300th counting leap years) day of the Gregorian Calendar has been quite the historical date. Ngô Đình Diệm declared himself Premier of South Vietnam, I managed to get more than 30 minutes of sleep within the last 3 months, and it signified the first Kiwanis meeting that I was able to attend thanks to my school campus blessing us with a “Teacher Workday” as compensation for corrupting both my physical and mental health. The Kiwanis Meeting, during the darkest times of my school career, was possibly the only major positive thing that I have been able to attend ever since we stopped having field days at school. This meeting, despite my lack of interest at the beginning, truly blew my mind when I first saw how many attended that morning. With almost 25 Key Club members from different schools coming to the Mansfield Methodist hospital at 7:00 AM, the Kiwanis members had a welcoming smile on their faces as the tiny room where they held their meetings was, for the first time in forever, cramped with enthusiastic students ready to participate in the lessons in store for them. The excitement was prominent throughout the room as the officers keenly listened to all that the older generation had to share. During this hour-long informative gathering, I was able to learn about not only about the vast amount charity programs and education crusades available for my school to implement into our daily routine, but I
12
also got to learn just how extensive and complex Kiwanis is as a worldwide organization. The Kiwanis Organization, founded on January 21st, 1915 during the midst of World War One, was an organization dedicated to giving aid to the unfortunate who were affected by the harsh times inflicted by the war. From there, many sub-groups began to form as well such as Key Club, Kiwanis Kids, and many more. The Kiwanis vast history on how it came to be such a massive superpower in the world of volunteering intrigued me to no end and kept me fascinated during the presentation. My first Kiwanis meeting was certainly a nice change of pace from my usual 23.5/7 hour grind towards a 4.0 GPA. Seeing all of these Key Club members from different schools come together to listen to guest speakers illustrated a poetic bond between the 2 organizations, becoming a touching work of art. All in all, I really enjoyed coming to that Kiwanis meeting and I will definitely come back again when I am available.

THE REASON WHY I LOVE KEY CLUB BY: KAYLA MOORE, DIVISION 39S
Happy memories can be the highlight of a person’s life. And I can happily admit that Key Club has opened doors to countless memories for me that will last for a lifetime. It has created a lot of new experiences for me that I never thought I would be able to go through and grow from. There are many reasons why I love Key Club, but there is a main one that motivates me to keep progressing and keep volunteering -- it’s the genuine connection that it creates. I have always loved connecting with others and creating authentic relationships with them. When I first joined Key Club, I realized how much you work in close proximity with people of all different types and backgrounds. It has enabled me to make friendships with others and, most importantly, send a helping hand to people in need. Key Club interlaces a person in their web of opportunity and I have been able to use that to connect with people of all different types and learn about life from a different perspective. All the laughter, smiles, and hugs I have shared through this club is the ultimate reason why I enjoy it. I realized I want to be able to continue this connection even after I graduate, and work with others in the same environment. You really don’t know you have a passion for something until you’re communicating with others in the same ideals and creating platforms to pursue it.
6
I love Key Club because it gives me a chance to never stop learning about new programs that I could be helping throughout my community, nation or even the world! So being able to become close to others is the reason I fell in love with Key Club and the reason why I still love it to this day. I hope here right now and in the future people can create similar experiences, and I know that the other Lake Ridge officers and I work hard to create a helping and inclusive working environment that all our members will be comfortable in. If you’re looking for a reason to stay active within Key Club, just know that the memories you create within it will help you grow as an individual person! You will love all the activities, opportunities, and socials created here. It will stay with you for a lifetime; I hope I can continue to make these memories even after I graduate.

a word from the
EDITOR
Hey Key Club! I hope everyone is doing well so far this school year. If you feel that schoolwork, extracurriculars, and clubs are beginning to get more difficult to bear---hang in there---Thanksgiving break is just a couple more weeks away! With that being said, a lot is changing for our club--- we've noticed more and more of you are volunteering and your service is so greatly appreciated for that. You may have noticed a familiar name earlier in the newsletter... Jordan Drumgoole! He is our freshman representative for this school year so don't be shy to spark a conversation with him. As a rep, he'll be writing more articles for the newsletter in the future, and we're happy to have him on our team. As a former freshman representative myself, it is such a pleasure to witness new generations step up into service and leadership every year. It just goes to show how organizations such as Key Club are able to give amazing opportunities to the future leaders of the world. With Love, Gilliana Tawaran
