A Pandemic Year ________________________________________ A

Until now, I have been a member of Key Club for 2 years and the experiences I have had changed me a lot from the time that I first came to America. But I believe that this year has been more special to me, not only because of the online platform changes but also, I am encouraged to develop my skills with our Key Club members. Even though I stay involved in more extracurricular activities, I always remind myself to balance them to contribute my best ability to the organization. Luckily, I was elected for the Editor position for the upcoming year and I feel so much more grateful, honored, and motivated to work harder. Since last year, everything has been extremely difficult for everyone around the world because of the Covid-19 pandemic. For this reason, as a student, I have a lot of different experiences from the changes this year compared to the previous ones. However, it can not restrain me from being productive, from learning, and especially, from serving the community with Key Club. Besides, I can see that the members of Lake Ridge Key Club have always been organizing well and trying to serve the community in different methods, regardless of the difficulties that this year has brought.

Club meetings are all attended by the members through Teams, but everyone still participates and tries to support each other. The pandemic limitation makes it harder to volunteer, but many event opportunities are given to the members to volunteer online that I think is a great alternative. One of the online options that I really like is the Free Rice program in which we play as many multiple-choice vocabulary questions as we want to. It helps to donate grains of rice to families around the world.

At the beginning of this school year, I made cards for the Nursing Home where the elders needed our support during the pandemic. Then, I created cards for Veterans Day to express our gratitude toward their service, and also cards for the teachers and staff who are experiencing a hard time because of quarantine.
I love making crafts and doing arts, so I could both help the community and enjoy it. Moreover, I donated a lot of my clothes at the local thrift stores and dry food for a drive for the people who are in need. The most recent event that I attended was to pick up trash at the Oliver Nature Park. I had a lot of fun cleaning up and meeting new people from other Key Clubs.
This year has had a lot of changes, but I still had fun helping the community and got support from the members of Key Club. To me, it is my special honor to be a part of the club. I am always grateful for the valuable opportunities with the essential skills that Key Club has brought to me.

HUMANS OF TEXAS-OKLAHOMA
“Never forget those from which you came” a statement often posted on graduation cards or a snippet of advice given to those leaving the comforts of their daily lives to explore a new phase of life. This statement shines in my mind as the last year of my time in Key Club. While I joined Key Club later in my high school career, I can truly say that I will never forget the experiences that I have been able to obtain through my fellow members and sponsor. When I entered high school, I participated in a variety of activities varying from the band to my church’s youth group and much more. With all these responsibilities entering high school, placing anything on my plate seemed like an easy way to overwhelm myself. However, one club I was truly interested in was Key Club. When I witnessed all the volunteer opportunities my friends were able to participate in and how the leadership team truly worked together with the community I was inspired to someday join the organization. Thus, when my junior year began I knew I had to sign-up to become a member. I joined in early October of 2019 and have been so grateful for the people I have been able to meet through this organization. Not only were many friends I already knew active in the organization, but many people I had never met were demonstrating how to truly juggle a variety of positions while all being very engaged in the community. I was also grateful to continue with my other extracurricular activities and even provide a bridge between those activities. For example, a volunteer project I was able to establish through a partnership non-profit organization...

... I worked with freshman year was a project we used this past year. We created pillows for underprivileged individuals in a neighboring city, and I never would have imagined being able to re-introduce this project within my school. Similarly, Key Club gave me the opportunity to gain more information about how our actions as individuals helped our region and state as well. While the global pandemic has weakened a lot of the aspects of my daily life, I was truly grateful for Key Club still being a very present aspect of my life. With our bi-weekly meetings with both officers and then members as a whole I have been able to have a sense of normalcy through Key Club. We have even been able to continue to create opportunities to volunteer whether in-person or virtual. The other members have also been supportive whether it was holidays, birthdays, or accomplishments I always felt as though I was cared for and thought about. The joy they have brought to my life has been truly significant and I have been able to have a wonderful end to both my Key Club experience and time in high school due to the members and club as a whole. From the late-night texts, the fiveminute impromptu meetings, socials, and birthday group chats I can truly say these moments are ones I will cherish. Thus, Key Club for me is a beautiful family that I can say I was loved in and have loved to be a member of. As I get ready to leave high school and continue on to a new phase in my life I know that I will never forget the moments that I was able to gain through Key Club. The friendships and opportunities that I have found in this organization are truly a part of my life and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Key Club at Lake Ridge High School.
